The Pane(a short film)
by Glenn Mercer (gpmrcr@aol.com)

Rated: R   Genre: Science Fiction/Fantasy   User Review: *1/2
A window brings forth both light and fresh air but on occasion a filth settles upon the glass and darkness engulfs the light and the fresh air becomes polluted.

FADE IN:

INT. STUDIO APARTMENT - DAY

MICHAEL peacefully awakens to soft light glowing through the
window, a cool breeze and the sound of a bird chirping - or
is his alarm clock to blame?

BEEP, BEEP, BEEP.

He slams the piercing alarm into snooze mode.

                       MICHAEL
Shut up bird.

TEN MINUTES LATER

Michael is sound asleep. His clock turns 8:22am and it
starts BEEPING its familiar tune once more.

With much contempt, Michael forces himself up, or at least
half up as he rests his back against the headboard.

He reaches for a cigarette from his night stand but refuses
to turn off the alarm - BEEP, BEEP, BEEP.

                       MICHAEL
Why's it so dark?

The soft light no longer exists, the cool breeze is gone,
and the chirping bird is silent.

He attempts to light his cigarette but the lighter refuses
to ignite.

He looks to the window and sees blackness.

He looks to his alarm and it reads 8:22am.

                       MICHAEL
What the fuck?

He gets out of bed and stubs his toe - it doesn't hurt.

He walks to the window, looks out, and sees nothing.

He looks back to his BEEPING alarm clock, which still reads
8:22am.

2.

                       MICHAEL
That can't be right, it must mean
PM, did I sleep through the whole
day?

Through the darkness he fumbles his way back to his bed.

He rummages through the disshevled blankets and finally
finds the TV remote. He turns it on.

THE TV

A perfect mixture of static and picture fills the screen.

                       MICHAEL (O.S.)
Piece of shit.

But even through the shittiness, Michael can see the
program. It's a morning talk show.

AT THE BED WITH MICHAEL

His head darts back to the window and confirms the
desolation.

                       MICHAEL
Oh shit - I'm dreaming.

He lays back down and with one fell swoop smacks the snooze
button one more time. The alarm quiets down.

NINE MINUTES AND FIFTY FIVE SECONDS LATER

Like a metronome, Michael fruitlessly attempts to light his
cigarette.

BEEP, BEEP, BEEP. The alarm goes off again.

In a fit of anger, Michael grabs the alarm clock and throws
it against the wall.

                       MICHAEL
What the hell is happening?!

Out of despair, Michael closes his eyes...and dozes off.

3.

TEN MINUTES LATER

Michael jolts from the bed due to the SCREAMING alarm clock
which sits back on the night stand still proclaiming to be
8:22am.

He takes a deep breath.

                       MICHAEL
This dream sucks. What do I do? I
guess I'll just go about my
business and I'll wake up
eventually.

Michael gets out of bed and stands.

CRACK, CRACK, CRUMPLE.

He looks down to see that his right foot is standing in a
pile of broken glass.

                       MICHAEL
Oww, shit. Must've broken a glass
in my dream.

He lifts his leg from the pile and hops and hobbles across
the room.

The light from the TV and the alarm clock lights his way and
illuminates an apartment in shambles.

                       MICHAEL
Oww, oww, oww, shit, shit, oww.

He reaches his kitchen table and sits in the chair.

He lifts his heel to reveal a deep cut that refuses to
bleed.

                       MICHAEL
I've gotta remember to write this
shitty dream down.

He notices the mess on the table.

                       MICHAEL
Well I guess I might as well clean
up a bit while I'm asleep, wait
that didn't make sense.

4.

He squints due to the lack of light.

He stands and finds the pain from his cut is gone.

                       MICHAEL
Dreams really are kinda cool.

A string hangs in front of his face and connected to that
string is the light he needs.

He pulls the string and the light begins to go on but only
for a split second before the bulb POPS and goes bad.

Michael jumps.

                       MICHAEL
What the...

He didn't jump because of the popping light. He jumped due
to what he saw in the glimpse of time the light was actually
on - he was surrounded by...death.

                       MICHAEL
F this F'ing dream. Whoa, where do
I come up with this shit?

He takes a deep breath and then picks up an empty bottle of
liquor that resides on the table.

He walks it to the kitchen sink.

In the cabinet under the sink, Michael finds a dustpan and
brush.

AT THE PILE OF BROKEN GLASS

Michael sweeps up the pile of glass and walks it across the
room to the trash can.

As he passes the kitchen table he sees the bottle of liquor
is back.

He shakes his head at his dream.

He picks the bottle back up and takes that to the trash as
well.

He dumps the broken glass and the bottle of liquor in the
trash.

                       MICHAEL
No need to recycle.

5.

He turns to see the bottle is back on the table.

He drops the dustpan and broom on the floor.

                       MICHAEL
Well that's pointless, no reason
to clean anymore.

A FAINT VOICE emanates in the air.

Michael turns his ear to it and is very silent so he can
hear what it's saying.

                       FAINT VOICE (O.S.)
I can't...

He listens harder.

                       FAINT VOICE (O.S.)
I can't take this...

Harder still.

                       MICHAEL
What...LAUREN?

                       LAUREN (O.S.)
I can't take this anymore!

                       MICHAEL
Even in my dreams I'm a pain in
her ass.

BEEP, BEEP, BEEP.

The alarm clock goes off again.

BANG, BANG, BANG.

Someone's banging at the door.

Michael turns to look at the door.

LAUREN, Michael's girlfriend bursts through and the darkness
disappears, replaced by the bright light of morning.

The soft breeze returns and the bird chirps again.

                       LAUREN
What in the hell is all the noise
in here, have you gone insane?

6.

She stops to see the apartment in complete and utter
shambles.

                       LAUREN
Where are you? Michael this
immature behavior is not the
tactic you should be trying to get
me back?

                       MICHAEL
What are you talking about, I'm
right here.

She neither hears him, nor sees him.

                       LAUREN
Michael!

                       MICHAEL
This dream fuckin' sucks.

Lauren's eyes widen as she looks across the room.

With a dazed look on her face she slowly and intently
crosses the room.

                       MICHAEL
What's with you?

AT THE WINDOW

Lauren stands before the window with both shock and horror.

It's broken.

She sticks her head out the broken window and looks down.

She jumps back, covering her mouth with her hand.

                       MICHAEL
What is it?

He stands beside her as shock fills her soul and tears fill
her eyes.

She SCREAMS.

                       MICHAEL
What is it, what's the matter?

He looks out the window, but it's still a little dark and
hazy to him.

7.

                       MICHAEL
What is it, Lauren, what do you
see?

She still can't hear him to answer him or see him to know
he's there.

He runs out the apartment.

Lauren looks down and see the broken glass on the floor.

INT. STAIRWELL - DAY

Michael runs down the step, actually moves as quick as he
can in the darkness of his existence.

He holds tight onto the handrail and slowly makes his way
down.

INT. STUDIO APARTMENT - DAY

Lauren slowly kneels down toward the glass and starts
fumbling with it.

EXT. APARTMENT BUILDING - DAY

The door bursts open and Michael runs through.

Through his POV he can barely see anything except dark
blurry images but in reality it's a bright sunny day.

He sees a commotion up ahead and runs toward it.

He hears FAINT SCREAMS.

INT. STUDIO APARTMENT - DAY

A sobbing Lauren is putting the glass back together as if it
were a jigsaw puzzle.

Over her shoulder we can see the beeping alarm clock now
reads 8:23am.

EXT. APARTMENT BUILDING - DAY

Michael reaches the crowd and forces his way to the front
like a curtain opening and revealing the horrific image of
himself lying - bleeding in the street.

8.

INT. STUDIO APARTMENT - DAY

Lauren places the last piece of the jigsaw puzzle together
to reveal a statement proclaiming:

I LOVE YOU LAUREN BUT I CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT YOU!!!

FADE OUT.

It was...okay. If you clean up the dialouge (read it out loud, 90% would never be heard by normal humans) and fix the directions (some of the directions are just not supposed to be in a script) it might be a bit better but there is no reason for the reoccuring thing, which is never explained, and the "seeing death" I don't understand. This could be interesting provided you take the time to clean it up.
