SMALL-TIME CRIMINALS

FADE IN:

|
EXT. ACT 1 SCENE 1 - DAY |
|
|
|
SETTING: MID-DAY, DOWNTOWN, NO CLOUDS. |
|
|
Man in mid 20's drving sedan, (not fancy), radio is playing
some kind of somber music, (not to sad), man is tapping
fingers in beat with the music. |
|
|
Car pulls up in front of school, along the curb. Camera
zooms in on man through side window. Man flips down
sun-visor, to show a photo of a teenage boy, as he is
looking at it, the wind kicks up and blows the photo out
through the open window.

JEFF (O)
(Fumbling at car
door.)
SHIT!!!! |
|
|
|
Jeff stumbles out of the car and chases the photo into the
street. As he grabs it a car brakes heavily and blares it's
horn. |
|
|
| |
JEFF (O)
(Waving at driver)
I'm sorry....(takes a step)
sorry... |
|
|
|
Jeff walks back to his car, replaces the picture, and
adjusts his tie in the side mirror. He then stands up, locks
his car, and walks up the path towards the school. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
Jeff is standing at a podium, with around 15-20 students
gathered around him (sitting in rows of chairs). |
|
|

JEFF (O)
(Clears throat,
leans in towards
the microphone)
Hi, uhh, my name is Jeff Conway,
and I'm here to talk to you about
drug-use and how to avoid becoming
someone like me.... |

EXT. SCENE 2 - DAY |
|
|
|
SETTING: EARLY MORNING, A PLEASANT NEIGHBORHOOD |
|
|
Jeff is a young kid, around 13 or 14. He is skating down a
street, obviously inexperienced. He ends up falling off a
curb. This scene is designed to show that he is trying to be
cool. He could be trying to get the attention of some other
kids at school. He sees his good friend, his only friend.

JEFF
(Talking to Tweak)
Hey... Whats up
|

| |
TWEAK
Ooooo... guess what! I got a new
styalis for my Gameboy! |
|
|
|

JEFF
Aww no way! did you get the
pokemon edition? |
|
|
|

TWEAK
(Showing Jeff the
Stylis)
Yeah.. its soo cool check it out! |
|
|
|
Another kid walks by them, laughing or commenting on how
they are so nerdy and lame. |
|
|

TWEAK
Man im sick of this, no one will
ever be friends with us, no one
will ever just sit and talk to us.

Yeah but my mom told me that those
kids aren't worth our time. |

|
|

Meet me at the benches after
school and we will do some
trading, I really want your

(acting cool)
only if I can have your Charzard. |

INT. SCENE 3/ GIRL TROUBLE. - DAY |
|
|
Shows pretty girl talking with friends and acting cool. Jeff
is all alone sitting on a bench. Then she walks past him. |
|
|

JEFF
(really sketched
out.)
Umm Ginger? |
|
|
|
| |
GINGER
(Confused)
Uh yeah wait your Jeff right? |
|
|
|
|

JEFF
Mabey you want to go out with me? |
|
|

GINGER
(Laughs and then
puts a serious
face on.)
Well sure but only if you buy me a
new Pokemon game. |

GINGER
Um I don't want your game I want
you to go away. |
|
|

JEFF
Umm but are we still going to go
out? |
|
|
|
|
Starts to walk away and turns to friend. |
|
|
|

Jeff looks disappointed and sits back down on the bench. |
|
|

INT. SCENE 4/ DRUGS ARE GOOD - DAY |
|
|
Jeff and Tweak hanging out after school at a graffitied
skate park no one there. A older boy approaches and begins a
conversation. |
|
|

ALEJANDRO
(Speaking very
thug like)
Hey need something? |
|
|
|
| |
TWEAK
(During the word
"that" Jeff cuts
him off.)
No we aren't in to that. |
|
|

JEFF
(Embaressed
looking.)
Shut up man, yeah...
(MORE)

(Looks at Alah)
What you got? |

ALEJANDRO
(Speaking to Jeff)
Got some krip dank. Blow, you name
it I got it, or can get it. How
much money you got? |

Uh... I got $15... what can I get
for that? |
|
|

TWEAK
(Grabs jeffs arm.)
Dude can I talk to you.
(Looks at alah)
In Private.
(Tweak and Jeff
walk a little
away.)
Jeff are you out of your mind.
That stuff can kill you man!....
you can't be serious, we gotta go. |

JEFF
(Looks pissed)
Shut up Tweak your so damn stupid.
It doesn't do anything to you.
Besides, this guy seems nice, he
really dosen't seem like the kinda
of person, to sell bad-stuff to
kids like us, right? |

TWEAK
(Worried Look)
How can you be so... so much of a
pushover. This Alah guy is a
criminal. He's probably selling
you, a weed he pulled from his
front lawn, let's go man. Now. |

TWEAK
I trust you... but not him, let's
go man, please. |
|
|
|

JEFF
Then trust me enough to make my
own decisions. Besides dude this
is going to get us in the IN
crowd. |

ALEJANDRO
(Laughing)
You whiney kids done yet I got
places to go. You want some or
not? |
|
|

JEFF
(Tweak gives Jeff
a bad look.)
Uhh, any chance we could, get a
discount? heh... |
|

ALEJANDRO
(Smiling)
Alright little man, tell you what,
I'll give you your first trip
free, after that I'll give you
half-off, sound good?
(Starts to walk
away and turns)
Here's my phone, call me when you
want more. |

End sscene with Tweak and Jeff going opposite way of Alah. |
|

INT. SCENE 5/ MORE DRUGS - DAY |
|
|
|
Setting: At the beach mid-day |
|
|
Jeff and Tweak are smoking the weed that they just bought
from Alah. They are amazed and want more. |
|
|
| |
JEFF
Wow... man this is cool, its way
better then video games! |
|
|
|
| |
TWEAK
Aww yeah man we gotta get some
more. |
|
|
|
| |
JEFF
Yeah ill call him up.... heh,
wheres the phone man... I lost
it... in th... oh here it is. |
|
|
|
|
Jeff pulls out his cell phone and dials his number |
|
|

Alah is chillin somewhere, the camera would cut back and
forth showing Jeff and Alah talking |

JEFF
Hey man whats up, you remeber me
right? Well can we get somemore of
this... stuff? |
|
|
|

ALEJANDRO
Yeah you got any cash? |
|
|
|
| |
JEFF
Naw man, I was thinking we could
pay you later.. |
|
|

ALEJANDRO
Hah.. yeah right I don't do IOUs.
But I got a better idea... why
don't we talk face to face.. |
|

JEFF
Alright where you wana meet? Back
at the skate park? |
|
|

Jeff hangs up.

JEFF
Alright man he says he can hook us
up if we meet him back at the
skate park... |
|

TWEAK
Man ill do anything for some more.
Jeff I was dumb for thinking this
was bad. Let's go. |

JEFF
Ok lets go soon... he is meeting
us there in a hour |
|
|

TWEAK
(Laughing heavly.)
I am soo damn high. I see the guy
from... that spider-dude comic....
the red guy... you konw....
(trails off) |

JEFF
(Really high
looking.)
Dude theres a sea otter in the
water. its humping a rock. |
|
|

TWEAK
(Really high and
bouncy)
Your too high man lets go now. |
|
|

JEFF
shut up man. your tripping but we
should go.
(Pauses)
Break out nervous giggling. |
|
|
|
|
They get up and start to walk away. Fade out. |
|
|

INT. SCENE 6/PROPOSITIONS. - DAY |
|
|
Alah is waiting at the same skate park. Sun setting almost
night. He is smiling. Tweak and Jeff arive still a little
high. |
|
|
| |
ALEJANDRO
(Smiling)
Sup nuccas. Now about my
proposition. I gotta ask. You
cholos cool? Or do we have a
problem? |
|
|
|
| |
TWEAK
(Looks at Jeff
very confident
and truns to alah)
Look "bro" I am sorry for being a
jerk. Me and my friend are cool
and we are up for anything. |
|
|

JEFF
(Acting thug like
and tough.)
Yeah we down with this. What chu
got for us? |
|
|
|
| |
ALEJANDRO
(Questioning look)
You talk the shit but can you do
the shit. |
|

JEFF
(confused)
umm alright I guess, i mean hell
yes, easy test... |

ALEJANDRO
Go kick that little kids ass whos
playing his gameboy. |

TWEAK
Dude thats Little Tony from the
game store.Alah me and Jeff hear aren't the
fighting little kids type. And
besides that little kids nice and
he's not hurting anyone. |

ALEJANDRO
Alright then I guess you guys aint
down with it I.. |
|
|

| |
JEFF
(Cuts off Alah)
Shut up Tweak. Speak for your own
self. Alright I kick the
innocence out of him. |
|
|
|
Jeff walks over to the kid and stops infront of him. Closes
his eyes and punches the kid. The boy falls over and Jeff
punches him over and over in the face and stomach. Wide
shot of Jeff punching the kid on the ground. |
|

ALEJANDRO
(Calls To Jeff)
Thats enough. |
|
|
|
| |
JEFF
(Panting)
Now whats the proposition. |
|
|
|
| |
ALEJANDRO
Now listen to the great Alah. I
want you to do some errands. And
then mabey you guys can help me
out with some deliveries. And you
can have all the bud you want. |

JEFF
Alright whats our first
assignment? |
|
|

| |
|
INT. SCENE 7/ DELIVERIES. - DAY |
|
|
Jeff and Tweak are milling around a tree in the park.
Waiting for the sub-dealers to come and pick up their goods. |
|
|
|
3 men walk up (tough looking) and stand before them. |
|
|
| |
MEN
(1st guy)
Alright, so you Alahs newest guys
right? Well welcome to the crew
litte man. |
|
|
|
| |
JEFF
Hey, I'm no little dude, so take
your stuff and get the hell away. |
|
|
|
Hands the dude a bad with a bunch white powder either cocain
or heroin. |
|
|
| |
MEN
(1st guy)
Alright, alright dude, you got it,
no worries, give Alah my best
regards. |
|
|
|
| |
MEN
(2nd Guy)
Me next. I got to work the West
Side today, I better have some
primo shit to dole out. |
|
|
|
| |
JEFF
(Looks at list)
Well man, looks like it's your
lucky day, got 8 crack rocks for
you. Enjoy. |
|
|
|
Hand a bag with 8 mediocre sized crack rocks. Using
Crystals as crack rocks. |
|
|
| |
MEN
(2nd guy)
Alright little man, see ya. |
|
|
|
| |
JEFF
And you get the bud. Now get out
of here. |

|

|
The third man peels off. And Tweak and Jeff are left alone. |
|
|
|
|

| |
|
INT. SCENE 8/ REPORTS - DAY |
|
|
Tweak and Jeff dutifully trudge up to Allah back at the
skatepark. |
|
|
| |
ALEJANDRO
(closes cell-phone)
From what my boys have told me,
you guys done good. Here's your
paycheck. |
|
|
|
|
Alah slings to small packets of white powder to them. |
|
|
| |
ALEJANDRO
Snort that shit and you will be in
heaven for 20 minutes and then
snort some more. |
|
|
|
| |
JEFF
(inspects powder)
Alright man, what's next? |
|
|
|
| |
ALEJANDRO
(hands Jeff a
scrap of paper)
Theres a bitch on the West Side,
who screwed me over, go get some
money from him. |
|
|
|
| |
JEFF
(turns to tweak)
I'll meet up with you soon. |
|
|
|
| |
TWEAK
(Turns and walks
away)
Alright fine, just phone me up. |
|
|
|
| |
JEFF
(Turns to walk)
Anything else? |

ALEJANDRO
(hands Jeff, a
small handgun)
If he gives you any shit... put
him out, you are obviously the
ringleader between you two, so I
trust you know what to do. |

INT. SCENE 9/BREAKING AND ENTERING - NIGHT |
|
|
Night, Tweak and Jeff are standing outside a house on the
outskirts of town wearing dark clothing. They have been
assigned by Alah to break and enter, and gather some "funds
for the effort". |

| |
JEFF
Checking scrap of paper
This is the one. |
|
|
|
| |
TWEAK
Come on man... let's just get it
over with. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Jeff strides quickly up to the front-door and jiggles the
handle. It dosen't open. Jeff walks around the edge of the
house, until he finds an open window. He motions for Tweak
to go in. Once inside, Jeff immediatly begins feverishly
rooting through the house looking for money or valuables. |
|
|
| |
JEFF
Where is this shit I don't see any
jar. Go check upstairs. |
|
|
|
| |
TWEAK
Are you freaking crazy, no way in
hell am I going up there. What if
he wakes up. |
|
|
|
| |
JEFF
Well... be quiet. And hurry up. |
|
|
|
Tweak mutters to himself as he lightly steps towards the
stairs, he eases open the door, and slides in. Jeff resumes
scavenging. Suddenly a shout and crashing is heard. |
|
|

| |
GUY
HEY WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING!
GET THE HELL OUT OF MY HOUSE. |
|
|
|
Tweak comes barreling down the stairs and knocks into the
table/wall in his hurry. The guy runs out of the room after
him, reaches over and grabs a gun from inside a cabinet. |
|
|
| |
GUY
(Raising the gun
to point at Tweak
and Jeff)
Nobody move, you just sit your
asses down until the cops get
here. |
|
|
|
| |
JEFF
(Backs up slowly,
hands up in a
peace geusture)
Hold on man, we don't want any
shit, we'll just go. |
|
|
|
| |
GUY
(focusing the gun
on Jeff)
I'm afraid I can't allow that. |
|
|
|
| |
JEFF
(When the guy
flits the gun
back to tweak,
jeff quickly
draws his own.)
Man... (shakily) let us go, we
haven't taken anything, and we
won't come back. |
|
|
|
| |
TWEAK
(Nervous
whispering)
Jeff what the fuck are you doing. |
|
|
|
The man reaches for the phone, and picks it up, Jeff fires 5
times and the man falls on the floor. |
|
|
| |
JEFF
LETS GO, shit Tweak RUN! |
|
|
|
They both tear out of the house, while police sirens are
heard in the distance. Jeff keeps running, while Tweak slows
down... panting. |
|
|

JEFF
(grabbing tweak)
what the fuck is the matter with
you, we got to go man. |
|
|
|
| |
TWEAK
(panting)
I can't.... I can't do it
anymore... not anymore... |
|
|
|
Jeff, harumphs and runs off down the street. Leaving Tweak
sobbing against the fence. |
|
|
|
|

| |
|
INT. SCENE 10/ HOW GUY DIED. - DAY |
|
|
Jeff returns alone to the skate park to meet Alah. Alah has
his giddy smile on. Jeff is stressed out and scared. |
|
|
| |
ALEJANDRO
(Smiling)
Where the little friend of yours? |
|
|
|
| |
JEFF
(looks like he's
been crying)
Little bitch ran away. |
|
|
|
| |
ALEJANDRO
Then you get 400 cash and twice as
much bud.
(Pauses and looks
carefully at Jeff)
Wheres my money? |
|
|
|
| |
JEFF
No the cash wasn't in the fridge
and the guy pulled a gun on us so
I shot him and killed him.
Shit.... |
|

| |
ALEJANDRO
(laughing)
You killed that nucca. Shit man I
thought you had balls. But not
balls of steel. Your a dangerous
mother, |

| |
JEFF
Dude he is dead. I killed a man. |
|
|

ALEJANDRO
(still giggling.)
So he is.
(gets serious)
you aint gonna rat are you cuz
then we gots a problem. |

JEFF
(gets pissed)
you punk you know I am loyal. |
|

ALEJANDRO
(gets giddy)
then your chill your getting more
money and bud then I promised, |

|

Jeff's phone rings. He picks up. |
|
|

TWEAK
(hysterical)
dude i am sorry. i just can't. i
just can't. i am sorry jeff, |
|
|

| |
ALEJANDRO
(gets serious)
whats he saying? |
|
|
|
| |
JEFF
(really worried
now,)
Where are you Tweak we need to
talk in person. |
|
|
|
| |
TWEAK
get out of town jeff i agreed to
testify against Alah.... |
|
|
|
| |
ALEJANDRO
this bitch is dead I heard that, |
|
|
|
Alah starts to run and pulls his cell phone out to make a
call. |
|
|
| |
JEFF
(about to cry)
Tweak don't do it please. I
thought we were friends. |
|
|
|
| |
TWEAK
(screaming)
you killed a man jeff you killed
him. |
|
|
|

| |
JEFF
I'm not the one who needs to leave
town Tweak. |
|
|
|
| |
TWEAK
What are you saying...
(no response for a
minute)
are you there... Jeff... Jeff? |
|
|
|
| |
|
INT. TWEAKS DEMISE - DAY |
|
|
Tweak, leaves Police station, or some official looking
building, walks down the street and through an alleyway, as
he gets about halfway down, a man jumps him, throws him
agains the wall and shoots him three times, (seen at a far
shot) |

| |
|
INT. SCENE 12/ END - DAY |
|
|
|
OVERCAST, GLOOMY. |
|
|
|
Back to reality |
|
|
| |
JEFF (O)
See drugs like weed and cocaine
you think oh they don't do
anything bad to anyone and they
sure aren't bad for me. Well
guess what they are bad for
everyone and everything. Drugs
killed a good friend of mine and
made me do some bad things.
(Pauses and waits
for applause.)
Now are there any questions? |

What did happen to this friend you
lost? |

JEFF (O)
(pauses and rubs
face looking
stressed)
he was brutally murdered by a drug
dealer me and him go involved
with. |
|
|
|
Fades out to Jeff walking out the doors of the building when
he sees two kids who look exactly like him a Tweak. |
|
|

JEFF (O)
Hey you two hold up. |
|
|
|
| |
JEFF
Hey your the speaker dude. |
|
|
|
| |
TWEAK
Yeah sorry about your friend. |
|
|
|
| |
JEFF (O)
Promise me that you will never do
drugs because that would make my
day. |
|
|
|
| |
JEFF
Dude I could never do drugs after
your story. I just couldn't
imagine losing this dude or him
losing me. |
|
|
|
| |
JEFF (O)
Drugs made me steal, cheat, break
the law and even kill others. I
hope my story does truly help you. |
