FADE IN:

INT. THE LIDDEL RESIDENCE - NIGHT

A girls room. Two beds. LUCY sleeps on one bed and WENDY
sleeps on the bed closest to the window. WENDY gazes out
into the dark sky. LUCY wakes up.

                       LUCY
Wendy, you're still up?

                       WENDY
I couldn't sleep. I'm so excited.

                       LUCY
For the audition tomorrow?

                       WENDY
Yes. With you as lead singer, and
my fashions on display, I'll think
we'll be a hit with the producers.

                       LUCY
You really think I can do it?

                       WENDY
We all can Lucy. You'll have me,
and the other girls right behind
you. And you'll look fabulous
thanks to yours truly.

                       LUCY
I still don't see myself as a
singer. I still see myself as the
song writer. The girl in the
background ya' know?

                       WENDY
You have an awesome voice Lucy.
You're exactly what the group
needed. At first mom thought I
should be the lead singer, but you
have one thing over me.

                       LUCY
And what is that?

                       WENDY
Stage presence hun. I can't
control a stage like you can.

2.

                       LUCY
You really think this can happen
huh?

                       WENDY
I have faith. But come on, if it
doesn't happen, it won't be in
vain. We'll have your awesome
songs and my outrageous designs.
It's all about not giving up.

                       LUCY
I guess this is a start then huh?

                       WENDY
Nothing else it could be

INT. DREAMSTAR MUSIC STUDIOS - DAY

DOROTHY, ALICE, WENDY and LUCY wait in a room to be called
with LUCY and WENDY's mother ROSE. DOROTHY is an African
American female. She wears a blue jacket with sparkleys and
has a guitar with her. She's going over the song with the
songwriter and lead vocalist LUCY. LUCY wears a long white
flower skirt and a pink top with sensible shoes. WENDY and
ALICE look at a Performing Arts Magazine. WENDY is the
group's resident blonde, but she's not your typical blonde.
She's smart. You can tell since she wears glasses and a
ponytail. ALICE is Asian American. She's dressed as if she's
a background character from the musical Rent. ROSE wears a
cheap fur and a denim skirt.

                       ROSE
Whatever happens, don't be
nervous. They can smell it. Like
fear. If you mess up, fake it.
They weren't at rehearsals, they
won't know. Don't upstage Lucy.

                       LUCY
Mom.

                       ROSE
I was kidding. You girls are a
team. Good luck.

                       ALICE
Miss Liddel. In theater it's bad
luck to say good luck. You should
say break a leg.

3.

                       ROSE
Does this look like theater to you
Alice? Get in there, kick ass, and
do as I say. I am God.

ROSE exits to the audition room.

                       DOROTHY
      (to LUCY and WENDY)
Your mom's in a mood.

                       LUCY
She's just worried. This is the
fifth audition we've been to and
nothing.

                       WENDY
She'll be fine. She's just worried
about how she's going to pay next
month's rent.

                       LUCY
What?

                       WENDY
Mom spent all of her money on this
audition. It all went to costumes,
dance lessons, vocal classes,
everything.

                       DOROTHY
Doesn't your mom have a job?

                       LUCY
She did until she sold her Salon.
This singing group is her job.

                       ALICE
So I'm guessing we're all going to
have to get this audition or
you're going to be out on the
streets huh?

                       WENDY
I hate to say this, but pretty
much.

                       LUCY
Pressure, pressure.

KATHY PRESSMAN enters

4.

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
You're up ladies.

INT. THE BOARD MEETING - DAY

After the girl's audition. KATHY PRESSMAN passes around
Polaroids of the girls to BOSS MAN and WOMAN.

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
What did you think of them?

                       BOSS MAN
Pretty girls. Good voices. Not
what we're looking for though.

                       WOMAN
I've seen a billion groups just
like this one. Girl groups fail.
Look at En Vogue, SWV, TLC,
Expose, Cover Girls... should I go
on?

                       BOSS MAN
Women are a hard risk in music
nowadays Miss Pressman. If anyone
knows this, it's you. You used to
be Kathleen P, pop singer, now
you're nobody.

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
Thanks for your subtlety, but I
think these girls are different. I
have a feeling about them.

                       BOSS MAN
I need more than a feeling.

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
Let me work with them. I know
they're brilliant and I know
things can work out.

                       BOSS MAN
Okay Miss Pressman. Under your
guidance, I will let these girls
have one more audition, but just
one more.

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
Okay boss man. I'm on it.

5.

INT. THE HALLWAY OF THE MUSIC BUILDING - DAY

KATHY meets ROSE in the hallway.

                       ROSE
Did you help us out?

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
I got them another audition if I
help them a little bit.

                       ROSE
You?

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
I know what it takes to make it in
this business.

                       ROSE
You better. I'm not paying you to
just give my girls dancing
lessons. I'm paying you to get
them famous and don't think I'm
too impressed with you. I hated
your albums.

INT. THE LIDDEL HOUSE - DAY

DOROTHY, ALICE, WENDY, LUCY and ROSE are crowded around the
living room.

                       LUCY
Kathy Pressman is going to help
us?

                       ALICE
Really?

                       WENDY
Who is that?

                       LUCY
She was a very popular singer back
in the 80s. Back then she was
known as Kathleen P.

                       DOROTHY
I thought she looked familiar at
the audition.

6.

                       ROSE
She told the record executives
that she believed in you girls.

                       LUCY
This is so exciting.

                       ALICE
I need to compose myself.

The sound of a car pulling in is heard

                       WENDY
Miss Pressman is here!

KATHY has entered and has begun acquainting herself with the
girls. ROSE stands nearby.

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
Girls, I'm here to make sure you
do better on the second audition I
got for you.

                       DOROTHY
So you're pretty much going to
tell us how we fucked up the first
time right?

                       ROSE
Pay attention Dorothy, I swear to
God.

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
I wouldn't exactly call it a "fuck
up" but you girls will need a
little something to stand out.

                       LUCY
We have Wendy's designs.

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
That is neat, but no one's going
to pay attention to that. Not now
at least. (KATHY looks at DOROTHY)
You're all different looking.

                       DOROTHY
Excuse me?

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
That could work for us. You're all
unique individuals.

7.

                       WENDY
Yes we are.

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
Well, let's emphasize that.

The girls take KATHY to WENDY's room where all of her
designs are laid out in a mess. KATHY sees what WENDY has
and starts to dress the girls. The final costumes are LUCY
in a wild outfit, DOROTHY in a baby doll type dress, WENDY
in a conservative pink outfit and ALICE in a techno chic
outfit. ALICE wears big red clunk sneakers.

                       LUCY
This isn't really me.

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
It doesn't matter, you're the lead
singer.

                       WENDY
You look great Lucy.

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
When I did my first music video
they put me in a denim skirt and a
peasant blouse. It wasn't who I
was and it definitely wasn't the
trend of the day, but it soon
became the trend. Do you follow?

                       DOROTHY
Why am I dressed like an overgrown
Shirley Temple?

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
Because you're the youngest one at
18.

                       DOROTHY
Yeah. 18. Not 8.

WENDY gets DOROTHY's sparkley jacket and hands it to her.

                       WENDY
Put this on Dorothy. I think it'll
look better.

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
It actually does. It's like
Forever 21 meets Mister Rags.
Contrast is really good.

8.

                       ALICE
Can I maintain some of my
individuality too?

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
You can change the shoes.

                       ALICE
Thank God. (ALICE changes her
clunky shoes to more sensible
ones) I don't remember En Vogue
having to go through any of is.
Maybe TLC.

INT. DREAMSTAR STUDIS - DAY

The girls and ROSE are back at Dreamstar with KATHY. They're
in the hallway right outside of BOSS MAN's office.

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
Remember to always keep up the
energy girls. This is your dream,
make them see that.

The girls enter the office led by KATHY and ROSE follows
behind. BOSS MAN and WOMAN are waiting behind a desk. The
girls position themselves in front of the desk. KATHY and
ROSE stand close by.

                       BOSS MAN
I like what I see. What are they
called again?

                       ROSE
This is Dorothy, Alice, Wendy and
Lucy. Also known as DAWL.

                       BOSS MAN
Looks like we got ourselves a
group. Hook them up with Swedish
Music Producer Moritz Star and
we'll have ourselves a hit group.

The girls have their first performances. A montage is shown
of them doing mall performances. Text appears on screen:

                       TEXT
The girls made their way
throughout the country promoting
the song "Baby Baby Don't You Want
Me" written for them by swedish
producer Moritz Star. Everywhere
they appeared, girls from ages

INT. THE LIDDEL HOUSE - DAY

The girls have crowded in the living room with ROSE. They're
listening to the radio.

                       SAMUAL SAMS
      (on the radio)
That was DAWL with their debut
single "Baby Baby, Don't You Want
Me."

                       ROSE
Wow, first song on the radio.

                       LUCY
It's exciting.

                       WENDY
We should really be thanking Miss
Pressman now.

                       ROSE
      (fake)
Yes. Let's all think Miss
Pressman.

                       LUCY
And it was premiered on The Samuel
Sams radio show.

                       ALICE
Oh I know. He is so cute.

                       LUCY
We should see if we get
interviewed by him.

                       WENDY
Oh I know.

                       ROSE
Well, I could make a couple of
calls and...

                       LUCY
Oh no mom, it's all right. I think
Kathy has this one under her belt.

10.

                       WENDY
That's right, she probably knows
him personally huh?

The girls leave the room as WENDY dials KATHY on her
cellphone. ROSE is left alone.

INT. KGEM RADIO - DAY

SAMUEL SAM is interviewing the RB Group Boyz United. The
members are LAWRENCE, OLIVER and LENNY.

                       SAMUAL SAMS
So are the rumors true?

                       OLIVER
Let's not talk about that now.

                       SAMUAL SAMS
Come on, the viewers want to know.

                       OLIVER
Okay, yes. I am currently seeing
actress Lizzie Wilson.

                       SAMUAL SAMS
Wow, I knew there was something
between you two.

                       OLIVER
Come on man.

                       SAMUAL SAMS
It was that last song at the
Grammy's, when you pulled her onto
the stage.

                       OLIVER
It was a nice consolation for not
winning, let me tell you.

INT. THE KGEM GREEN ROOM - DAY

SAMUEL SAMS continues to interview Boyz United as DAWL waits
in the nearby green room. KATHY PRESSMAN has accompanied
them.

                       ALICE
This is kind of exciting.

11.

                       WENDY
I know. We're at a real radio
station.

                       LUCY
I'm a little nervous.

                       DOROTHY
Don't be scared. He's just going
to ask you some dumb ass questions
and expect some dumb ass answers.

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
You really need to watch your
language young lady, especially on
the radio, and on TV as well.

                       ALICE
Wow, we might be on TV?

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
One step at a time Alice.

INT. KGEM RADIO - DAY

                       SAMUAL SAMS
It was great having you on the
show. Boys and girls, that was
Boyz United. Up next we have
something a little bit different
from the smooth RB sounds of that
last group. Up next we have the
infectious pop music of DAWL,
who's single is starting to crawl
up those billboard charts, but
first here's a hit from a girl
group of the past. Here's SWV's
Weak.

INT. THE KGEM GREEN ROOM - DAY

                       ASSISTANT
Come right on in ladies.

DAWL and Boyz United pass by each other in the green room.
DAWL on their way out and Boyz United on their way in. LENNY
takes a look at the girls as the door is shut. KATHY stays
behind with Boyz United.

12.

                       LAWRENCE
Come on, if we hurry we can stop
by Denny's or something.

                       LENNY
Let's stay for awhile.

                       OLIVER
What?

                       LENNY
What's the rush guys?

INT. KGEM RADIO - DAY

                       SAMUAL SAMS
So, what are your names?

                       LUCY
I'm Lucy

                       WENDY
Wendy

                       ALICE
Alice

                       DOROTHY
Dorothy.

                       SAMUAL SAMS
All right. So I read somewhere
that you all auditioned to get in
this group?

                       LUCY
That was kind of the case.
Originally it was Wendy's idea to
be a singer, but then she got me
singing. We decided to start a
girl group, so my mom held
auditions. Our friends Alice and
Dorothy auditioned and now we're
here.

                       SAMUAL SAMS
So what do you have to say to
those people out there who think
you're just manufactured fluff?

13.

                       DOROTHY
I say don't believe everything you
read.

INT. THE KGEM GREEN ROOM - DAY

KATHY breaths a sigh of relief at DOROTHY's answer. She
didn't cuss.

                       LENNY
Fiesty.

INT. KGEM RADIO - DAY

                       SAMUAL SAMS
Looks like we got a caller.
(presses the caller button) What's
your name?

                       MARY SUE LEE
Hi I'm Mary Sue Lee. My daughter
loves your music. We saw your show
at the mall last week and you're
all my daughter talks about.

                       LUCY
Thank you, how sweet.

                       MARY SUE LEE
Ya'll have a CD out or something?

                       LUCY
We're cutting some tracks together
right now. It should be in stores
by next month, but no promises.

                       SAMUAL SAMS
Thank you Mary Sue Lee, (presses
the caller button) next caller?

                       KELLY
Hello?

                       SAMUAL SAMS
You're on the air caller.

                       KELLY
Really? (screams) Wow. I'm Kelly
Goldenstein and I love you guys.
I'm all about DAWL. I love Lucy. I
want to dress just like her.

14.

                       LUCY
Wow, you should thank my sister
for our wardrobe though. She
designed everything.

                       KELLY
Wow really?

                       WENDY
Yeah, but our manager, Kathy
Pressman put them together. I just
made them.

                       KELLY
Omigod, I'm talking to DAWL.
(screams)

                       SAMUAL SAMS
Ummmm... next caller?

INT. THE KGEM GREEN ROOM - DAY

                       LENNY
Their fans are wack.

INT. DREAMSTAR MUSIC STUDIOS - DAY

A board meeting about DAWL with BOSS MAN, WOMAN and KATHY
PRESSMAN.

                       BOSS MAN
They seem to be garnering praise
from the younger crowd. Little
girls.

                       WOMAN
We should market DAWL towards
them.

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
What a good idea. We can have this
whole girl power type of campaign.
"Girls can do anything, look at
us."

                       WOMAN
And we have two minorities right?

                       BOSS MAN
That's right. Doesn't that just
widen the demographic.

15.

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
We have to be careful though. This
is very delicate. They haven't
made it big yet and any minor
misstep can cause them to go right
back to playing at talent shows
and weddings.

                       BOSS MAN
Your right.

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
I've already been piled with some
silly offers. (KATHY reveals a
thick folder with rejected
marketing ideas for DAWL. She
pulls out some papers) Like this:
this company wanted to market DAWL
soap.

                       WOMAN
Sounds brilliant.

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
Sounds silly.

                       WOMAN
What else do you have there?

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
An offer to star in their own
sitcom.

                       BOSS MAN
What's wrong with all of this Miss
Pressman?

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
Our girls are too sophisticated
for that kind of thing. We need a
type of balance. They look young,
fresh and wacky, but inside
they're sophisticated ladies.
That's the illusion we're trying
to sell, right?

INT. THE LIDDEL HOUSE - DAY

KATHY has handed WENDY, DOROTHY, ALICE and LUCY papers with
information on their marketing campaign.

16.

                       WENDY
This is kinda....

                       ALICE
It's very...

                       DOROTHY
It's bullshit

                       LUCY
Dorothy...

                       DOROTHY
What kind of shit is this. It
sounds like a PSA announcement.

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
It kind of is. You girls are the
role models for dozens of young
women out there.

                       DOROTHY
Really? (reading her paper) "We
are the future. Girls can do
everything!" Are these young women
brain dead?

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
These young women, whom you call
brain dead, are the ones who will
buy anything you release. CDs,
posters and (to WENDY) even your
own fashion line.

                       LUCY
Let's just give it a try Dorothy.

                       DOROTHY
Fuck that.

                       LUCY
Language

                       WENDY
It's just that, well, Miss
Pressman knows the business. Maybe
we should trust her.

                       DOROTHY
I think trust needs to be earned.

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
I did get you this far.

17.

                       LUCY
Yes. Come on Dorothy. Let's be a
little grateful.

                       DOROTHY
Okay. But I won't enjoy it.

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
I really don't care wether you
enjoy it or not. Just keep our
demographic happy, and do as I
say. You should be fine if you do
all that.

INT. THE NORA SMITH SHOW - DAY

The marketing campaign begins. Their CD release is called
"Girls Can Do Everything." Text appears on the screen.

                       TEXT
The girls debut at number one,
luring millions of little girls
and teenagers into every CD store.
Their video floats around VH1's
Top Ten list for the rest of the
year. The girls are a hit for both
young and old.

The girls appear on the NORA SMITH show.

                       NORA SMITH
Tell me girls. What's with this CD
title, "Girls Can Do Everything?"

                       LUCY
It's kind of a motto we came up
with. We want to emphasize that in
this male dominated world, girls
can grow up to be whatever they
want to be.

                       NORA SMITH
That is awesome. You're like Neo
Feminists for a new generation of
Susan B Anthony's everywhere.

                       DOROTHY
      (Fake)
Exactly.

18.

INT. BACKSTAGE - DAY

ROSE and KATHY watch the show backstage.

                       ROSE
You've done a wonderful with the
girls Miss Pressman

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
Thank you. It kind of reminds me
of my days.

                       ROSE
The girls really trust you don't
they?

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
Well, some of them are resisting
my teachings, but it's good that
the ones that trust me know how to
talk them into doing exactly what
I say.

                       ROSE
Interesting. And what girls are
resistant towards you?

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
Alice a little bit. She doesn't
say much, but I know what that
means. It means she doesn't agree.
She does go along with it, I'll
give her that much, but I can tell
that she hates this just as much
as Dorothy.

                       ROSE
Dorothy hates this?

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
Oh yeah, she thinks it's all fake
and showy, but hello, this is show
business. It's all about showy. I
should know. I was there too. I
know the highs and lows girl. That
girl should be bowing down to me
though. Motor Animation wanted to
do a cartoon series based off of
the girls.

                       ROSE
Really?

19.

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
Yeah. I saved them from that one.

                       ROSE
Interesting. They never told me
that.

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
Oh I didn't tell them. I didn't
want to burden them with it. I
just want them to focus solely on
performing.

                       ROSE
So umm... what else have you kept
from the girls?

INT. THE LIDDEL HOUSE - DAY

ROSE has handed the girls KATHY's folder of rejected
marketing ideas for DAWL. The girls have sorted out through
it.

                       LUCY
Movie deals? Promotions for
Victoria's Secret?

                       DOROTHY
A chance to open for No Doubt? We
missed out on that one?

                       ROSE
I'm sorry to be the one to tell
you this girls, but Miss Pressman
has been keeping these things from
you.

                       DOROTHY
I knew this was bullshit. She
needs to get fired now!

                       WENDY
Now girls, we can't over act. She
has done so much for us.

                       DOROTHY
Look at us. We're parodies of
ourselves.

                       LUCY
Calm down Dorothy.

20.

                       ALICE
No Lucy she does have a point.I
mean, look what we're doing. The
focus isn't even on our music
anymore, if you could even call it
that. How many songs on our last
CD are even actually produced by
us? How many did you write? Aren't
you supposed to be our lyricist as
well as our lead? They had some
songwriter from Sweden write most,
if not all of our songs while we
just sang what they told us too.

                       DOROTHY
And that is not the kind of artist
I want to be. It's not what none
of us wanted to be. I want her
out.

                       WENDY
Well I want her to stay.

                       LUCY
I do too. Can we please just sit
down and talk this out with her?

                       DOROTHY
Either she goes, or I go?

                       ROSE
Do you feel the same way Alice?

                       DOROTHY
Alice?

                       ALICE
I don't know?

                       DOROTHY
What do you mean you don't know?

                       ALICE
Ya'll got valid points. I agree
that it feels like we're just
tools, but it is because of Kathy
that we got this far, right?

                       DOROTHY
It also might be because of Kathy
that that's how far we'll get.
Think of that. I'm going.

21.

                       LUCY
Where are you going?

                       DOROTHY
Away. Call me when you've made a
decision and I'll come back
according to that decision.

DOROTHY drives off. LUCY goes to her room and thinks. WENDY
looks through the papers, contracts and deals they miss out
on. ALICE looks in her mirror.

INT. KATHY'S OFFICE - DAY

LUCY enters KATHY's office.

                       LUCY
Miss Pressman?

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
Lucy. Hello. What brings you here?

                       LUCY
We're letting you go.

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
What?

                       LUCY
They chose me to tell you. I wish
they didn't.

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
What the hell is going on?

                       LUCY
My mother will take over managing
duties.

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
You girls can't leave, you're
under contract.

                       LUCY
My mom was prepared for that. We
hired a lawyer.

                       KATHY PRESSMAN
Then I'll see you at court.

                       LUCY
I'm sorry.

FADE OUT.
