FADE IN:

INT. APARTMENT - NIGHT

PEOPLE on a couch and surrounding area LAUGHING hysterically
at a television show.

INT. APARTMENT 2 - NIGHT

Same layout as the previous with elaborately coordinated
interior design.

A GROUP OF GIRLS are serving dinner and drinking wine in a
intimately lit room.

INT. APARTMENT 3 - NIGHT

Same layout. STUDENTS doing homework while others talk,
enter and exit.

INT. MARK'S APARTMENT - NIGHT

A TELEVISION is slightly audible. MARK (20) is slouched
motionless except for his heavy breathing, wearing filthy
sweat pants and a t-shirt.

The blue glow of the television reveals his bloodshot eyes
and un-shaved face. He scratches himself, sets the remote
down and stands.

INT. BATHROOM - NIGHT

URINATING. Hold. FLUSH. A door opens in the bathroom. Mark
walks out and to the sink. He turns on the WATER and stares
at it.

MIRROR P.O.V.

Mark stares. He utters "What Now?".

BACK TO BATHROOM VIEW.

KEYS JINGLING. A DOOR OPENS. Mark turns off the water and
storms into the living room.

2.

INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

JACK (21) wearing an over coat enters the apartment with
some effort holding groceries and a suitcase.

Mark enters the room and remains silent. After getting
inside Jack notices him. They stare.

                       MARK
How was home?

                       JACK
Great...it was great...

                       MARK
      (shaky)
How is everybody?

                       JACK
How long have you been in the
apartment?

                       MARK
Few days.

Jack sets his keys and suit case down.

                       MARK
Was the traffic back OK?

                       JACK
You wanna have a talk or
something?

INT. KITCHEN - DAY

Jack is putting groceries away while Mark watches seated at
the counter speaking.

                       MARK
I mean, nothing ever really gets
said...

                       JACK
Nothing is really supposed to be
said in those conversations.
That's why they're "those" types
of conversations.

                       MARK
I didn't see the point in having
it...

3.

                       JACK
Did she say anything specific?

Mark holds a glance at Jack.

INT. MARK'S APARTMENT - DAY

Days Earlier. MARK'S EX (19), hair flowing over a hooded
sweatshirt, is on the couch talking as fast as she can with
her hands.

                       MARK (O.C.)
There's was something
about...indifference...the
future...

Mark's ex continues. Mark is frozen staring at the ground.

                       MARK (O.C.)
It just wasn't... She seemed...I
think there's someone else...

BACK TO KITCHEN.

                       JACK
What makes you say that?

                       MARK
She said, "I'm happier now".

Jack puts his hand on Mark's shoulder.

                       JACK
Anything...else?

                       MARK
She had some guy's hoodie...

Jack puts the last of the groceries away.

                       JACK
I have a mid term tomorrow. Put on
some clothes and let's get drunk.

Mark chuckles and his face moves from a frown for the first
time.

INT. KITCHEN - NIGHT

SHOWER ECHOES. ORANGE JUICE is poured into vodka filled ROCK
GLASSES.

4.

EXT. BALCONY - NIGHT

Mark and Jack are both standing outside with their drinks.
Mark is shaved and in fresh clothes.

                       MARK
One minute you know somebody.
They're a living part of your
life. Then gone-departed away
somewhere.

                       JACK
They're still there, just faded.
Like ghosts in the snow.

The two have a moment to drink. Jack lights a cigarette.

                       JACK
Mark, I know what your going
through is...rough to say the
least but I hate to see you like
this...your like my brother, ya
know, and I care about-

                       MARK
How long ago was it? When you
slept with her?

                       JACK
...she told you?

                       MARK
How long?

                       ROY
When you two first started having
problems.

                       MARK
Did you tell her to leave me?

                       JACK
I told her to do what made her
happy.

                       MARK
Was that leaving me?

                       JACK
Her decision.

Hold. Mark starts to breathe heavily and shake.

5.

                       ROY
      (gasping)
I don't even have you right now.

                       JACK
Mark... I'm in every sense of the
word...sorry.

Mark collapses to the ground and against the wall.

                       JACK
At the time...it just seemed
the...it seemed like the right
thing to do and I know that's
completely wrong but we...Just
once, it never happened again. I'm
not this other guy...

                       MARK
Brother? I don't hear it from
you...I have to hear it from
her...

Mark gets back up to face Jack.

                       MARK
Who are you?

                       JACK
I'm not really sure.

The two lock into each other for a moment before Mark walks
back inside. Jack looks for a moment. He eventually joins.

INT. MARK'S APARTMENT - NIGHT

Jack enters and stands at the door.

Mark is pouring more ORANGE JUICE at the counter. He stops
and stares at Jack.

Moment.

Mark adjusts and pours another glass for Jack. Jack slowly
makes his way to the counter and sits.

Mark does the same opposite him as they start to sip their
drinks in silence.

FADE OUT.

Pretty good short. I like how you set up the opening shot in the bathroom with things like "From mirror's view" That really helps people like me who write and direct. Maybe include more description of the balcony scene. Also, just wondering why some lines say "Roy"?

From Jeff Helton Date 12/6/2007 ***
I think you should give more character direction, perhaps look into giving the reader a more detailed description of what's happening in the scene of "MARKS EX", just a suggestion, perhaps remove the INT MARKS APT. and change it to a FLASHBACK or SUPER - TWO DAYS EARLIER, unless I'm not seeing it right. Other than that, good work so far.
