EXT. NORTH AFRICA - DAY

BLACK SCREEN...

The deep ROAR of a vast body of water is heard rumbling
somewhere out in the wild. The CALLS of exotic birds and
wild animals echo through the air.

FADE IN...

FLY OVER the path of a turbulent water current surging
violently downstream... then PULL OUT to reveal a massive
RIVER flowing through a lush African terrain.

CUT TO - DOWNSTREAM

In CALMER WATERS, a pod of hippos drink and play in the cool
river waters... A red-necked grebe flaps its wings as it
floats along the current... An overweight crocodile emerges
from the river and crawls onto dry land...

A long PAPYRUS BOAT floats across the river carrying two
dark skinned men wearing SHENDYTS (CLOTH SKIRTS). They are
drenched with perspiration from a long day's work under the
hot sun and bicker at each other as they pull large
reed-fiber nets filled with fish from the river.

NEARBY, a number of other papyrus and ABYDOS SAILBOATS glide
peacefully along the river transporting large clay barrels
of fish, wheat, fruits and vegetables, wine and beer.

Suddenly...

SPLASH! Two small wooden canoes cut across the water. Two
teenage boys sit in each canoe rowing with small wooden
paddles. HAMADI, 14, and TEHUTI, 15, ride in the first
canoe, JABARI, 15, and KONTAR, 13, ride in the second.

The two canoes weave through the larger abydos boats as
annoyed merchants and travelers watch them race downstream.

The two canoes reach a NARROW BEND in the river and collide.

Hamadi, in the front seat of the first canoe, jabs the
second canoe with his oar causing it to sway in the water.
Hamadi laughs! Jabari and Kontar yell at him.

Hamadi jabs their canoe even harder with his oar. The canoe
rocks violently, then capsizes and Jabari and Kontar splash
into the water.

Hamadi and Tehuti laugh and turn to look behind them.

2.

HAMADI AND TEHUTI'S POV to Jabari cursing at them as he
struggles to swim in the strong current.

Hamadi, busy laughing, turns back to look in front of him
and his smile abruptly disappears. Tahuti looks over
Hamadi's shoulder and expresses a similar look of panic.

HAMADI AND TEHUTI'S POV ahead of their canoe to a TWENTY
FOOT-HIGH WATERFALL! Both Hamadi and Tehuti scream!

Hamadi and Tehuti's canoe plunges over the edge of the
waterfall. It gets lost in the current of raging waters.

EXT. RIVER BANK - MOMENTS LATER - DAY

Hamadi pulls his canoe out of the water onto a wooded shore
and places the two small oars inside. Tehuti stands nearby
watching him, chewing on a small root.

Hamadi walks to a nearby tree. He grabs a small animal-skin
sack hanging by a thin string from a low branch and opens
it. He reaches inside and pulls out a small SHIMMERING
OBJECT.

CLOSE UP POV to a large GOLD RING engraved with the
falcon-shaped head of HORUS, the Egyptian God of the sky.
Hamadi places the ring on his right ring finger when...

SPLASH! Hamadi looks down at the river bank.

Jabari and Kontar swim to the river's edge and exhaustedly
walk up the shore. Jabari is noticeably angry. He charges
straight at Hamadi.

(IN COPTIC LANGUAGE - SUBTITLED IN ENGLISH)

                       JABARI
Cheater! You turned our boat over
on purpose! You almost killed us!

                       HAMADI
Jabari, the goal of the race is to
win. You are just angry because I
beat you again.

                       JABARI
You have no honor Hamadi. You
never play fair!

                       HAMADI
Where is your pride, Jabari? You
must learn to lose like a man.

3.

Jabari charges again at Hamadi but Tehuti grabs and holds
him back.

                       TEHUTI
Easy Jabari. You will soon get
your chance to win.

Jabari breaks away from Tehuti's grasp, just as the LOUD
CALL of a SHENEB (BRONZE HORN) is heard from off in the
distance. Jabari, Kontar, Tehuti and Hamadi all look in the
direction of the sound.

                       KONTAR
What is that?

                       TEHUTI
It is almost sunset. Today the
King is annointing the birth of
his daughter.

Tehuti, Jabari and Kontar turn to stare at Hamadi who
suddenly remembers... then panics!

                       HAMADI
Oh no! Father’s going to kill me.

Hamadi takes off! He runs up the river bank as fast as he
can. Jabari, Tehuti and Kontar laugh as they watch him hurry
away. Tehuti yells after him.

                       TEHUTI
      (yelling)
You'll never make it, Hamadi.

EXT. SMALL VILLAGE - CONTINUED

Hamadi races through a large dirt field lined with small
grass huts and mudbrick shacks. Several tattered residents
watch him as he races by.

EXT. MARKET PLACE - CONTINUED

The HORN continues to call...

Hamadi blazes through an crowded paddock surrounded by
wooden tables, carts and barrels, and he dodges around busy
merchants and tradesmen who shout and scream as they bargain
over goods.

EXT. OPEN GARDEN - CONTINUED

Hamadi runs through a lush glade of green grass, tall palm
trees and colorful wildflowers.

4.

The HORN calls louder...

Hamadi maneuvers through a horde of men, women and children
walking up a dirt path. The sound of a CROWD CHEERING is
heard from up ahead.

HAMADI'S POV to a MASSIVE STONE WALL carved and painted with
colorful Egyptian hieroglyphics.

EXT. PALACE - ARENA - DAY

A packed crowd fills a vast open air arena enclosed by the
stone wall. The arena is parted down the middle by a LONG
WALKWAY that runs from the main entrance across to a set of
stone steps on the other end. The steps lead to a high
standing stone PLATFORM that overlooks the arena.

The crowd cheers as the dwarf CHIKE stands on the platform,
dressed in a gold shendyt and dawning gold jewelry and
exotic feathers. He yells out to the crowd.

                       CHIKE
The Gods are great and mighty! Let
us celebrate and rejoice!

The crowd cheers!

                       CHIKE
      (continued)
The time hazs come to give thanks
and praise to the Gods. Our land
shelters us. Our river nourishes
us. And our King unites us all.
Let we who gather here witness the
precious gift from Amun Ra. Our
King, Nebtawi!

Chike turns to look behind him at a LARGE DOORWAY that leads
into the King's palace.

Out of the shadows, eight tall black-skinned men carry a
lavishly engraved GOLDEN THRONE on their shoulders out onto
the platform.

POV FROM BEHIND THE THRONE to a seated formally dressed man.
We only see the back of his white and gold NEMES (PHARAOH
HEAD-DRESS).

The men place the throne on the ground and depart. The
seated man stands and steps down to the stone platform. PAN
AROUND TO the front of the man to reveal KING NEBTAWI, a

long, thin yet strong man dressed in a formal white and gold
shendyt. A lion's tail hangs from his waist.

The crowd throws themselves to their knees.

Chike calls out to the crowd.

                       CHIKE
      (continued)
Rise my brothers and sisters and
greet your mighty King!

The crowd stands and cheers.

Chike raises his hands - the crowd goes silent.

                       CHIKE
      (continued)
We gather to this holy place to
celebrate a great birth. A
beautiful daughter of Egypt is
given to us by our King. With the
blessing of Min, our goddess of
fertility, I present to you,
princess Ife!

Chike points to the opposite end of the walkway towards the
entrance of the arena - the crowd turns to look.

Out of the entryway, a beautiful caramel skinned woman,
dressed in a long sheer linen robe adorned with beads and
feathers enters the arena. She is QUEEN NAEEMAH. She carries
her naked newborn daughter, IFE, in her arms.

The crowd watches quietly, then begins to chant a soft
African lullaby in unison.

Queen Naeemah carries Ife down the walkway, up the stone
steps onto the platform and stands next to King Nebtawi.

                       CHIKE
      (continued)
Let us rejoice!

The crowd cheers!

CUT TO - ENTRYWAY

HAMADI enters the arena and stops just inside the wall. He
looks across the walkway to the stone platform and watches
the dwarf address the crowd once again.

6.

                       CHIKE
      (continued)
On this special day, we pay
tribute to all who came before us,
and pray for all those who will
follow in our path. Let us greet
baby Ife, and witness the eternal
life of Egypt.

Hamadi slowly walks down the walkway towards the platform.
Several people nearby notice him. They quickly bow to their
knees - others whisper curiously and point at him.

As more people notice Hamadi, they whisper and kneel down.
Hamadi stops in his tracks and looks around at dozens of
confused faces starting him.

ON THE PLATFORM, Chike, King Nebtawi and Queen Naeemah
notice the commotion and look out across the walkway to see
Hamadi standing embarrassed in the middle of the crowd.

King Nebtawi charges to the edge of the platform.

                       KING NEBTAWI
Hamadi!

Hamadi timidly walks through the walkway, and up the stairs
to the platform. He stands next to Queen Naeemah. King
Nebtawi scowls at him.

Chike looks at Hamadi and the King, then to an embarrassed
Queen - he turns back to the crowd.

                       CHIKE
Let us rejoice!

The crowd cheers once again.

INT. PALACE - ARMORY - LATER

Hamadi stands alone in the middle of a small room lit only
by the gleam of sunlight coming from small openings in the
ceiling. The walls are lined with copper swords and axes,
wooden bows and arrows, and several long spears.

Hamadi stares nervously down at the floor.

Out of the silence, FOOTSTEPS are heard stomping towards the
room just before King Nebtawi bursts in followed by a
nervous servant who struggles to take off his master's
jewelry. The King charges at Hamadi...

7.

SMACK! King Nebtawi slaps Hamadi across the face.

                       KING NEBTAWI
Disgrace!

SMACK! King Nebtawi slaps Hamadi again.

                       KING NEBTAWI
      (continued)
Embarrassment! The great prince of
Egypt does not remember the
annointing of his own sister?

Hamadi tries to hold back tears.

                       HAMADI
I am sorry father. I lost my time.

King Nebtawi yells at the top of his lungs!

                       KING NEBTAWI
No! You are my son! You are the
future King. You do not lose time!

King Nebtawi towers over Hamadi.

                       KING NEBTAWI
      (continued)
You must learn responsibility. You
must learn to be a man if you are
to one day rule this nation.

                       HAMADI
I am a man, father.

                       KING NEBTAWI
No! A man is strong! A man is
wise! You are not a man!

Hamadi stands up tall and raises his head.

                       HAMADI
      (defiant)
I am a man.

King Nebtawi walks over to several LONG WOODEN POLES that
lean against the wall. He grabs two of the poles and throws
one on the ground at Hamadi's feet.

                       KING NEBTAWI
If you are a man, then you can
defeat me.

8.

Hamadi rolls his eyes.

                       HAMADI
I will not fight you, father.

                       KING NEBTAWI
I said, pick up your staff!

Hamadi does not move. King Nebtawi pokes him in the shoulder
with the end of his staff. Hamadi brushes the pole away.

                       KING NEBTAWI
      (continued)
Be a man!

King Nebtawi swings his staff and cracks Hamadi in his leg -
Hamadi falls to the ground in pain.

                       KING NEBTAWI
      (continued)
PICK UP YOUR STAFF!

Hamadi reluctantly picks up the staff. He struggles for a
moment, then stands in a sparring position.

King Nebtawi throws a jab with his staff but Hamadi blocks
the maneuver with his own staff. King Nebtawi makes another
move that Hamadi tries to dodge, but is hit in his stomach.
Hamadi recoils in pain but stands firm - anger swells inside
him.

Hamadi bursts forward and charges at his father violently
swinging his staff.

King Nebtawi evades Hamadi's attack, flourishes his staff
and CLACK! The King hits Hamadi in the side of the head,
Hamadi crashes to the ground. He groans in pain as blood
drips from the large gash across the temple of his head.

King Nebtawi stands over his son and holds the staff to his
face.

                       KING NEBTAWI
      (continued)
You will obey me boy.

King Nebtawi throws down his staff then storms out of the
room followed by his servant. Hamadi lays whimpering on the
ground.

9.

EXT. MEADOW - DAY

A small procession of half-nude men and women peacefully
stroll through a sprawling green meadow. Some carry brightly
colored cloth banners and flags that dance in the breeze.
They walk on either side of a WOODEN CARRIAGE pulled by four
horses and draped in thin linens protecting the occupants
inside from the glaring sun.

CUT TO - INT. CARRIAGE

Queen Naeemah lounges on several large woven pillows. She
cools herself off with a small fan made of straw and
feathers. Next to her is a nude Arab female servant who
holds a sleeping baby Ife.

The Queen daydreams as she looks out at the beautiful
landscape... suddenly something out in the distance catches
her attention. She sits up and calls out.

                       QUEEN NAEEMAH
Stop! Stop the carriage.

CUT TO - EXT. MEADOW

Two of the men pull the horses to a stop. Another man runs
to the side of the carriage, takes Queen Naeemah's hand and
escorts her to the ground.

Queen Naeemah hands the man her fan and walks toward the
subject of her gaze.

EXT. CLIFF - CONTINUED

Hamadi sits cross legged on a flat stone rock. His head is
down and DRIED BLOOD covers a wound on his forehead.

Queen Naeemah appears behind him and stands directly at his
back.

                       QUEEN NAEEMAH
My son. Your path in life will not
be found without pain. But your
wounds will heal.

Hamadi does not move. His mother places her hand on his
shoulder.

                       QUEEN NAEEMAH
      (continued)
Your father loves you, Hamadi. He
only wishes you make better
choices.

10.

Hamadi wipes his eye.

                       HAMADI
I do not care. No matter what I
choose, father always believes I
choose wrong.

PULL OUT TO SEVERE WIDESHOT

Hamadi and his mother are near the edge of a CLIFF that
falls hundreds of feet to the rushing river below.

                       QUEEN NAEEMAH
Look below you, Hamadi. Look at
the Nile waters. Like us, the Nile
was created by the Gods. It did
not choose to be a river, the Gods
simply made it so. And so you did
not choose to be our future King.
That path was set before you. But
unlike the river, you have a
choice. You will choose the kind
of King you wish to be.

A faint VOICE echos from somewhere in the valley below.

                       VOICE
Hamadi... Hamadi...

Hamadi stands up and walks to the edge of the cliff. He
looks down to the other side of the river.

HAMADI'S POV to the river bank below where Tehuti, Jabari
Kontar stand at the river's edge looking back up at him.

Hamadi turns to look at his mother. She smiles.

                       QUEEN NAEEMAH
Go, play.

Hamadi runs to his mother and kisses her on the cheek.

                       HAMADI
Thank you mother.

Hamadi runs away. Queen Naeemah watches him leave.

EXT. RIVER BANK - DAY

Jabari, Tehuti and Kontar sit near the river's shore and rub
moist tree roots across long, flat, smooth pieces of wood.

11.

Hamadi walks down to them. Kontar notices the scar on
Hamadi's forehead.

                       KONTAR
What happened to your head?

Hamadi lowers his head. His three friends exchange concerned
glances. Tehuti tries to break the silence.

                       TEHUTI
The eastern winds have come. We
want to be the first to catch the
storm.

Kontar walks to Hamadi holding a wooden board - he hands it
to Hamadi.

                       KONTAR
We brought one for you, Hamadi.
Will you join us?

VOICES are heard from further up the river bank. Hamadi,
Tehuti, Kontar and Jabari turn to look.

FURTHER UP THE RIVER BANK, three teenage boys walk by
carrying similar wooden boards. They are completely covered
from head to toe in WHITE SAND, appearing as ghosts as they
pass by.

Hamadi, Kontar, Jabari and Tehuti look at each other in
excitement.

EXT. DESERT - DAY

The sun glares in the cloudless sky. A massive WIND STORM
blows across the desert dunes moving the sand like ocean
waves.

Out of a cloud of wind, Hamadi and Tehuti emerge riding
their wooden boards, surfing along the sand dunes.

Hamadi is a skilled rider. He glides across the waves with
ease. Tehuti struggles to stand upright.

CUT TO - NEARBY RUINS

Jabari and Kontar sit on the ledge of a broken stone
structure - both covered in white sand. They cheer at Hamadi
and Tehuti.

12.

BACK TO - DESERT

A LARGE GUST OF WIND bursts across the desert - Tehuti tries
to keep his balance but fails and wipes out into the sand.

The same gust of wind hits Hamadi. It blows him off his
wooden board and he flies through the air, crashes to the
ground and gets buried in the sand.

Tehuti manages to stand and grabs his board. He struggles
through the strong wind and walks through the desert. He
scans around the desert floor when something nearby catches
his eye.

Tehuti walks over to a pile of sand and reaches down. He
grabs an ARM that sticks out of the sand and pulls - the arm
belongs to Hamadi who coughs as he emerges from the dirt.
Both friends laugh.

EXT. HILLSIDE - LATER

Hamadi, Kontar, Tehuti and Jabari walk along a lush
hillside, still covered in white sand. They carry their
wooden boards over their heads as they laugh and talk.

The foursome walk down to the lower bank, throw their boards
on the ground and remove their shendyts. They run naked down
into a shallow bed of the river and wash the sand off their
bodies.

                       TEHUTI
Those winds are sure to be just as
strong next year. Will you join us
then Hamadi?

Hamadi does not answer, his smile fades. Kontar answers.

                       KONTAR
Next year Hamadi will be married.
He will not have time to play with
us.

                       JABARI
He will have all the power and
wealth of Egypt. And he will
choose a beautiful woman to be his
Queen.

                       HAMADI
No. I cannot choose my own wife.
My father will choose for me.

13.

                       TEHUTI
When you are King you can leave
your old wife and pick a new one.

                       KONTAR
Maybe you should work as the
King's advisor, Tehuti. Then you
can have all the women Hamadi
turns away.

The four friends laugh as a WOMAN'S VOICE is heard from the
hill above them. They all turn to look up...

ON THE UPPER BANK, twenty teenage girls walk single file
along the top of the bank. Some carry food and linens in
their arms - others carry straw baskets on their heads.

A stern older woman holding a long stick walks along side of
them. She taps the young girls with her stick as if herding
cattle along a path.

Hamadi, Kontar, Jabari, and Tehuti awe at the girls as they
pass by. Tehuti decides to start trouble and begins
whistling BIRD CALLS at the procession.

Most of the girls roll their eyes at Tehuti, a few laugh.

                       TEHUTI
Will you not stop to greet the
prince of Egypt?

The girls look and notice Hamadi. They all stop, turn to him
and bow.

                       GIRLS
      (in unison)
Greetings your majesty.

                       TEHUTI
Prince Hamadi must be married by
the harvest. Which of you shall be
his wife?

The girls giggle at each other.

FAVOR one of the girls, a beautiful Arab female who wears a
woven necklace with a large polished GREEN STONE at the
center. Hamadi and the girl catch each others stare - then
the girl lowers her head, blushing... Tehuti notices.

                       TEHUTI
      (continued)
What is your name?

14.

The other girls look at her and giggle.

                       ANIPPE
I am Anippe.

                       TEHUTI
A beautiful name. Do you think so
Hamadi?

                       HAMADI
Yes. A beautiful name.

The old woman at the front of the line turns around - she
yells out to the girls, then spanks the girl closest to her
with her stick.

The girls quickly get back in line and follow the old woman
across the hill.

Hamadi and Anippe exchange a final glance before she
disappears.

                       TEHUTI
Hamadi, you should have ordered
them to bathe with us.

Hamadi splashes Tehuti with water. Jabari and Kontar laugh.

EXT. PALACE GARDEN - DAY

PAN ACROSS a vast, beautiful garden filled with colorful
flowers, green vines and ferns. Butterflies, birds and baby
sheep drink and play among themselves.

IFE giggles and plays on the ground in front of King Nebtawi
and Queen Naeemah who recline against a giant tree root.

Queen Naeemah plays with a braid of her long black hair. Her
husband is lost in thought. The Queen notices.

                       QUEEN NAEEMAH
Your mind is far away, my King.
Tell me, where are you now?

                       KING NEBTAWI
What shall I do with Hamadi? He
will not listen. I can rule over a
nation, yet my own son will not
obey me.

15.

                       QUEEN NAEEMAH
Hamadi will soon find his path,
just as you did. Do not forget you
were once young.

                       KING NEBTAWI
Much has changed since my youth.
Egypt has many enemies who wish to
destroy all I have built. Hamadi
must not forget.

Queen Naeemah holds King Nebtawi's face in her hands.

                       QUEEN NAEEMAH
Do you love your son, mighty King?

                       KING NEBTAWI
More than all the gold and all the
power the Gods can give.

                       QUEEN NAEEMAH
Then you must tell him you love
him. Only then will he open his
heart to you.

Queen Naeemah gently kisses King Nebtawi on the lips.

EXT. RIVER - DAY

The sun glistens over the calm NILE (IARO) river waters. Two
large wooden abydos ships port on either side of a long
stone pier where several Egyptian guards stand.

Fifty African and Arab men, some clothed, some nude, stand
on the decks of the ships looking curiously at the harbor.

The guards place long flat wooden planks on the sides of the
ships to connect them to the pier and herd the men to shore
placing them in two lines.

An elderly hazel-skinned man with a bald head and grey
mustache and beard walks down to the port. He is clothed in
an ornate linen robe and walks with a slight limp but
stables himself with a long wooden staff. He is MUSIM,
Egypt's highest priest.

Musim stops in front of the men, surveys their curious
faces, then speaks...

                       MUSIM
Gentlemen! You have been brought
here to the city of the King. You
owe your lives to the King, and

                       MUSIM (cont'd)
now you shall repay him. You will
work nine days and rest on the
tenth day. You will be paid in
food, shelter, clothing and beer.
Tomorrow you will be divided
according to your skill. But first
I will show you the great work
that is before you.

Musim turns and walks up the port. The guards yell out
orders to the men who quickly form a single file line and
follow Musim towards a lush wooded area.

EXT. WOODS - CONTINUED

The guards march the long line of men through a dense wood
of tall Trachycarpus trees. The SOUNDS of exotic animals
blare through the green, scaring some of the men.

FAVOR ONE OF THE MEN who looks up in a tree.

MAN'S POV to a MONKEY sitting on a tree branch. It stares
back at him as he passes by.

EXT. DESERT - CONTINUED

The men continue along a dirt field that ascends up a rocky
hill. They reach the summit and come down the other side as
sounds of BREAKING ROCK AND HAMMERING STONE echo from up
ahead. The men look out ahead of them.

A hundred yards across the valley floor, thousands of men
tirelessly chip away at the side of a tall carved out
mountain exposing brilliantly WHITE COLORED STONE.

EXT. QUARRY SITE - CONTINUED

The procession walks past a crowd of workers pounding out
large blocks of rock with copper and iron chisels... then
past groups of craftsmen sharpening and repairing copper
tools with rocks, fire and boiling water... then past dozens
of laborers transporting water and tools in clay pots.

A legion of guards supervise the worksite, shouting out
orders and directing traffic.

Musim leads the men up another hill away from the quarry
site. As Musim passes, several quarry workers stop to bow at
him.

EXT. CONSTRUCTION SITE - CONTINUED

17.

Musim reaches the top of the hill. He looks out in the
distance ahead of him. As the line of men walk up behind
him, they too look ahead of them - their eyes widen and
their mouths drop open in awe, stunned at the sight before
their eyes.

                       MUSIM
Behold!

On the other side of the hill a giant PYRAMID towers over
the desert plain. It is almost complete, only missing its
top third.

Two large ramps lead up the side of the pyramid meeting at
the massive prism's southwest corner. Hundreds of men pull
giant blocks of stone up the ramps on sleds dragged by large
reed-fiber ropes - others sand down portions of the pyramid,
making the surface smooth. The men chant a HEEV-HO-LIKE song
in unison as they work.

Musim and the men look out at the work before them.

FADE TO WHITE...

INT. PALACE - HAMADI'S BEDROOM - DAY

A large stone room is lit by torches that stand along the
perimeter walls.

PAN ACROSS the floor to a gold plate covered in half eaten
fruit... THEN ACROSS several cloth garments thrown around
the floor.

PAN STOPS at a large feather bed covered with woven pillows.
Hamadi sleeps soundly, naked. Beside him is Anippe, also
naked, wearing only her NECKLACE WITH GREEN STONE.

Anippe groggily sits up. She reaches down on the floor and
picks up a small clay saucer filled with burning embers.

Anippe picks up a thin hollow root, puts it in her mouth and
holds it over the burning embers - she inhales as the embers
burn brightly.

Anippe falls back down on the pillows, her eyes roll to the
back of her head. As she exhales, the smoke billows through
the air. Hamadi rolls over and puts his arm around her - she
cuddles into his chest.

Suddenly, RUNNING FOOTSTEPS are heard entering the room. A
voice whispers.

18.

                       VOICE
      (whispering)
Prince Hamadi. Prince Hamadi!

Hamadi slowly opens his eyes. A SERVANT stands over his bed
then quickly bows to the floor.

                       SERVANT
The King... He is coming.

Hamadi wipes his eyes and looks at the servant. The servant
nods to Anippe who sleeps soundly beside him.

Hamadi LEAPS out of bed and stands over Anippe. He shakes
her but she is completely incoherent.

                       HAMADI
      (whispering)
Anippe! Wake up.

Anippe giggles and turns back over.

Hamadi frantically looks around the room. He rushes to the
side of the room and opens a large golden chest. He quickly
pulls out an armful of robes and linens and tosses them on
the floor.

Hamadi runs back to the bed, picks up Anippe and carries her
to the chest. Hamadi drops Anippe into the chest and closes
the top.

                       SERVANT
King Nebtawi!

Hamadi turns around - King Nebtawi is already at the
doorway. He enters the room slowly and looks around.

KING NEBTAWI'S POV to the clay saucer with still burning
embers... then to the garments thrown on the floor.

King Nebtawi turns to Hamadi.

                       KING NEBTAWI
We are at war. I have gathered a
meeting of the warrior chiefs. It
is time you learn to lead true
warriors of men. If you say you
are a man, you will do as I...

BANG! BANG!

BANGING is heard from somewhere in the room. King Nebtawi
stops mid-sentence...

19.

BANG! BANG! King Nebtawi looks over at the golden chest on
the side of the room... A MUFFLED VOICE shouts.

                       ANIPPE
Hamadi. Hamadi, let me out.

King Nebtawi glares at Hamadi, then turns around and walks
out. The servant scurries behind him.

Hamadi guiltily watches his father leave, huffs, then goes
to open his chest.

INT. PALACE - COUNSEL ROOM - DAY

In the center of a large stone room, six men sit on stools
made of carved wood. They are the King's warrior chiefs,
adorned with human bones, animal teeth and exotic feathers.
One of the stools is empty.

At the head of the stools, King Nebtawi sits in a large
wooden throne. Musim stands at his side.

The warrior chiefs sit around a large MAP OF NORTHERN AFRICA
painted in black pigment on the floor.

CHIEF OSAHAR, an intense, hard-looking older man, rises from
his stool holding a long thin stick in his hand. He walks
onto the map and addresses the counsel.

                       CHIEF OSAHAR
The king of Assyria is dead. He
leaves behind two sons. Prince
Ardashir, and Prince Faridoon. The
two brothers have proclaimed that
he who conquers Egypt and claims
the head of its Pharaoh, shall be
king.

HAMADI enters the room. He quietly walks over and sits down
on the empty stool.

Chief Osahar points his stick down on the map to the RED SEA
(YAM SUPH).

                       CHIEF OSAHAR
      (continued)
The first attack comes by Prince
Faridoon across the Red Sea.

                       KING NEBTAWI
      (interrupting)
Let him come. He will not reach
Egyptian soil. My warriors will

destroy his ships. Then I will
march to his homeland and burn it
to the ground.

The chiefs exchange disapproving looks.

                       CHIEF OSAHAR
My King, it is you who killed the
Assyrian king. His sons seek only
justice, not power.

                       KING NEBTAWI
Justice is power! I can not allow
my enemy to grow strong. All that
I have built, they wish to take
from me.

Another chief speaks.

                       CHIEF
This enemy is mightier than any
Egypt has seen. We must seek a
peaceful end. It is the only way
to survive.

                       KING NEBTAWI
Egypt is at war! It must be
protected from any man who
challenges me.

                       CHIEF
Egypt can not win this war. You
must choose another way.

                       KING NEBTAWI
No! There is no other way. There
is only my way.

                       CHIEF OSAHAR
You must listen to your counsel.
Egypt can not be the bearer of
death upon the world...

King Nebtawi BANGS his hand on his chair!

                       KING NEBTAWI
I SAID NO!!

King Nebtawi's voice reverberates through the hall - the
warrior chiefs dare not interrupt.

21.

                       KING NEBTAWI
      (continued)
If those savages want my head, I
will take theirs first. You will
gather my soldiers. You will do as
I command!

EXT. OUTDOOR TEMPLE - DAY

The sunlight shines down on an open air enclosure surrounded
by a tall wooden fence. Several large stone statues of
Egyptian Gods stand at the northern, southern, eastern and
western points of the enclosure.

The field is filled by thousands of Egyptian soldiers in
leather armor - each carrying a spear and shield. They kneel
with their heads down in silent prayer.

In the center of the field is a stone altar raised three
feet above the ground. MUSIM stands on the altar and shouts
passionately!

                       MUSIM
Egypt has called upon you, mighty
warriors, to defend your King. The
time has come to give your blood
for the lives of your people. I
bless you with the strength and
courage of Amun Ra. Go now and
fight. Egypt is with you!

The warriors stand and begin to chant in unison, banging the
fronts of their bronze-plated shields in a drum-like rhythm.

EXT. HARBOR - DAY

King Nebtawi stands on a small cliff overlooking the RED SEA
(YAM SUPH). He is deep in thought.

Chief Osahar walks up behind him.

                       CHIEF OSAHAR
My King. Your soldiers are
prepared for battle. Your enemy
comes with the swiftness of the
wind.

BELOW King Nebtawi and Chief Osahar is a large stone PORT
carved out of the rocky mountainside. It leads down to the
water revealing ONE HUNDRED LONG WOODEN BOATS floating

22.

silently at attention, each carrying fifty men - twenty
rowers and thirty warriors holding spears, bows and arrows.

OVERHEAD POV OF THE EGYPTIAN BOATS, THEN FLY EASTWARD ACROSS
THE SEA...

EXT. EASTERN SHORE

FLY OVER arrives at a fleet of THREE HUNDRED SMALL WOODEN
ASSYRIAN COMBAT BOATS floating in the water facing west.
Behind them are TWO MASSIVE ROWBOATS bearing fifty rowers on
each side.

CUT TO - MASSIVE ROWBOAT - DECK

A soldier, dressed in a HULIAM (CONICAL HELMET) and IRTU
ARMOR walks to a large wooden chair at the rear of the ship.
The man sitting in the chair is PRINCE FARIDOON, dressed in
a red KITTUNA (TUNIC) and patterned KEFFIYEH (HEAD SCARF).
He is a handsome man in his 20s, with thick long curly black
hair and well trimmed beard.

(IN ARAMAIC LANGUAGE - SUBTITLED)

                       SOLDIER
Prince Faridoon. We are ready.

                       PRINCE FARIDOON
Then let it begin.

The soldier turns and nods to his comrade at the front of
the ship. That soldier blows into a large IVORY HORN which
echoes through the air.

The paddles of the three hundred combat boats begin to row
and the entire Assyrian fleet moves westward across the sea.

EXT. EGYPT - OUTDOOR TEMPLE - DAY

A nude dark-skinned servant enters the open air enclosure
carrying a clay bowl filled with BLUE LOTUS FLOWER PEDDLES.
He approaches the stone altar where Musim stands deep in
prayer.

Musim turns to the servant and takes a single flower peddle
from the clay bowl. He mumbles to himself, then places the
flower peddle onto his tongue.

23.

EXT. HARBOR - DAY

King Nebtawi and Chief Osahar look out across the sea at the
approaching Assyrian fleet.

In the PORT below them, the Egyptian boats wait silent and
still.

King Nebtawi nods to Chief Osahar, who turns to look further
up the bank to a nearby hill.

(IN COPTIC - SUBTITLED)

                       CHIEF OSAHAR
Light the fire!

CUT TO - NEARBY HILL

A soldier stands at attention holding a torch lit with fire.
On the ground next to him is a tall pile of tree branches
bound in twine. The warrior lights the pile of wood which
burns quickly. SMOKE rises into the air.

CUT TO - HARBOR - BOAT - DECK

One of the Egyptian soldiers looks up at the hill above the
port.

SOLDIER'S POV to a thick cloud of smoke rising from the
burning branches above him.

Suddenly the long OARS of the boats begin to row and the
Egyptian fleet moves eastward toward the approaching enemy.

CUT TO - EASTERN SEA

The Assyrian ships advance westward and pick up speed. Their
oars slash through the calm waters.

CUT TO - WESTERN SEA

Egyptian warriors prepare their bows and arrows and ready
their spears. The rowers increase their pace.

The two nations advance from a hundred yards apart... to a
hundred feet apart when...

CRASH! The front line of the Assyrian boats collide into
Egyptian ships with an onslaught of spears, arrows and sling
shots.

The Egyptian ships are much larger and sturdier as they ram
and capsize the smaller Assyrian boats with ease. The

24.

onslaught of Egyptian spears and arrows overwhelm the
Assyrian soldiers. Limbs are severed, bodies are impaled and
bones are broken.

The Egyptians advance toward the back line of the Assyrian
boats at will. Even those who fall in the water can not
escape from the massacre.

EXT. EGYPT - OUTDOOR TEMPLE - DAY

Musim stands at his stone altar in a hallucinogenic trance.
His tongue colored DEEP BLUE, his eyes rolled to the back of
his head. He quietly mumbles a mystical chant to himself.

Musim removes a lid to a small straw basket that sits atop
the altar. He reaches into the basket and pulls out a large
BULLFROG. He places it down on the altar.

Musim picks up a large COPPER KNIFE with one hand and holds
the frog down with the other. He cuts the frog open, slicing
it from head to toe.

Musim picks up the frog in both hands and raises it above
his head, he begins to chant louder. The BLOOD from the frog
drips through his fingers down onto the altar.

Suddenly, FROM THE SKY a large FALCON flies down towards
Musim's outstretched hands. It glides down, grabs the
bleeding frog from Musim's hands with its talons, and flies
away.

FOLLOW the falcon as it flies EASTWARD up over the Egyptian
port... across the harbor and over the violent sea battle.
Below it, warriors fight, die and drown in combat.

The falcon continues across the sea to the calm waters of
the EASTERN SHORE. It approaches the two massive Assyrian
ships floating quietly in the water.

On the DECKS of the two ships, several soldiers look up at
the falcon as it flies over them.

A RED DROP falls down onto a soldier's face. He wipes his
cheek and looks at his red stained fingers.

The frog falls.. down.. and crashes into the water.

CUT TO - UNDERWATER POV

The bleeding bullfrog sinks down into the depths of the sea,
its blood oozes through the water... Suddenly, the SHADOW OF
A LARGE ANIMAL swims by.

CUT TO - SHIP - DECK

Several soldiers look overboard to see two LARGE MASSES move
just below the surface of the water. The confused soldiers
exchange frantic commands when...

BOOM!

A large object in the water BUMPS one of the ships causing
it to rock wildly.

IN THE WATER the two large masses reach the surface and gasp
for air. A soldier screams!

                       SOLDIER
Crocodiles!!

BOOM!

The ship is hit with another massive underwater force. It
rocks violently, tips over and capsizes. The soldiers yell
and scream as they fall into the water.

Several TWENTY-FOOT CROCODILES converge on the overturned
ship. They eat any flesh they can find, ripping limbs off
bodies and pulling their prey underwater.

ABOARD THE SECOND SHIP, Prince Faridoon and his soldiers
watch in horror. One of his soldiers screams out!

                       SOLDIER
Go! Go now!

The OARS on the ship begin to row and the ship begins to
glide away from the carnage when...

BOOM...... BOOM!

Prince Faridoon's ship rocks from an undersea attack. The
ship sways and begins to tip over. Several soldiers jump
ship into the water an attempt to out-swim their hunters.
The ship capsizes and begins to sink. Many soldiers fight
each other to survive being eaten alive.

Prince Faridoon frantically swims towards the shore among
his fleeing soldiers. He almost reaches the shallow cove
when, SNAP! A crocodile grabs his leg in its mouth. Prince

Faridoon screams and tries to break free as the crocodile

crocodile bites his head. The two crocodiles rip Prince
Faridoon in half and drag him below the surface.

EXT. EGYPT - FIELD - DAY

Thousands of Egyptian warriors stand together in a large
dirt field. Many are scared and bruised - others have
wrapped their injuries in bloody cloth bandages.

Among the crowd are several large piles of SEVERED HEADS OF
ASSYRIAN SOLDIERS. The Egyptian warriors dance around them
and chant cheerfully in unison.

(IN COPTIC - SUBTITLED)

                       WARRIORS
Victory! Victory!

Many soldiers surround King Nebtawi and his warrior chiefs
who laugh, hug and congratulate each other.

King Nebtawi makes himself the center of attention. He walks
to his warriors and salutes them personally - they eagerly
return his congratulations. One of the warriors presents the
King with the SEVERED HEAD OF PRINCE FARIDOON. King Nebtawi
grabs the head by its hair and raises it in the air.

                       KING NEBTAWI
My soldiers! My soldiers!

The soldiers cheer!

King Nebtawi throws the head into the crowd. He raises his
hands, his troops fall silent as their King addresses them.

                       KING NEBTAWI
      (continued)
My soldiers. Today, I celebrate a
great victory. My enemies are
defeated. With you by my side,
Egypt will remain strong! Let the
ears of my enemies hear Egypt's
roar for all time!

The warriors cheer! Their celebration is joined by the
rhythmic cadence of AFRICAN DRUMS. The soldiers jump in
dance to the beat.

CUT TO - SIDE OF THE FIELD

27.

Hamadi watches the celebration from the side of the field.
He gazes through the crowd when something catches his eye.

HAMADI'S POV to MUSIM who leans against a large sycamore
tree, dressed in a long draped linen tunic. He watches the
celebration for a moment, then backs away and leaves.

Hamadi slowly creeps away and follows after Musim.

EXT. TEMPLE GROUNDS - CONTINUED

Musim walks through a shaded corridor. Hamadi quickly
follows and calls after him.

                       HAMADI
Musim!

Musim stops and turns around.

                       HAMADI
      (continued)
Why do you leave the celebration?
This victory also belongs to you.

                       MUSIM
The King is who the people
celebrate. He is their symbol of
victory.

Musim begins walking, Hamadi follows beside him.

                       HAMADI
I know you do not like my father.
There are times when I do not like
him. We are at constant war.

                       MUSIM
I am always loyal to your father.
Yet he and I follow different
laws. The King follows the laws of
man. I follow the laws of the
Gods.

As Musim and Hamadi walk through the temple grounds, several
worshipers stop to bow as they pass by. A few others grab
Musim's cloak to kiss it.

                       HAMADI
But many say my father is a cruel
man. They say he seeks endless
violence and war.

Hamadi pauses...

28.

                       HAMADI
      (continued)
...and he wants me to be like him.
But I do not think like him. At
times, I do not wish to be King.

                       MUSIM
But you will be King. That is your
purpose. Remember Hamadi, you
cannot condemn a King until you
have worn his crown.

Musim and Hamadi walk towards the entrance of a tall
columned stone structure painted with Egyptian deities at
the entryway, guarding the holy space within.

INT. TEMPLE - CONTINUED

The walls of the temple stand fifty feet high. All covered
with brilliantly colored hieroglyphs.

Musim leads Hamadi through an EMPTY section of the wall
where several artists chisel and paint fresh symbols and
drawings, Hamadi watches them.

                       HAMADI
They are telling the story of my
father's victory in battle?

                       MUSIM
They are writing our history.

Hamadi thinks...

                       HAMADI
But history is the telling of the
past. Why tell it while we still
live?

                       MUSIM
This battle belongs to Egypt. And
is part of our history. We write
our history so we will always
remember the truth.

                       HAMADI
Any man can tell a story and call
it history. How do we know if what
is written is the truth?

Musim places a hand on Hamadi's shoulder.

29.

                       MUSIM
If it is written, it becomes
truth. And that truth shall create
our future.

Musim walks away. Hamadi turns to look back at the giant
wall.

EXT. AFRICAN LANDSCAPE - DAY

VARIOUS SHOTS OF EGYPTIAN LIFE

waters... A lioness and her cubs sleep in the shade of a
large acacia tree... Two farmers harvest wheat from a lush
pasture... A young girl dips a clay pot into a well to
retrieve fresh drinking water... Several Arab merchants
transport wheat and barley across the river on wooden
rafts... A family of antelope graze in the tall grass...

A large herd of sheep spread across a green hillside - some
graze, others sleep soundly.

A young dark skinned SHEPHERD BOY stands among the heard. He
is dressed in a tattered shendyt and carries a long wooden
stick.

The sheppard boy treks up a steep hill to collect a number
of stray sheep. He strikes them with his stick and they
quickly move back down the hill to join the herd.

The boy continues over to a baby lamb that plays happily in
the grass. He reaches down and picks up the lamb just as a
RUMBLING sound echos from the other side of the hill.

The sheppard boy curiously walks to the top of the hill and
looks down - his jaw drops in astonishment.

SHEPPARD BOY'S POV to the other side of the hill where a
massive legion of TWENTY THOUSAND ASSYRIAN WARRIORS march in
ranks toward Egypt. They are followed by FIVE THOUSAND
HORSEMEN.

Among the Assyrian troops, FAVOR a young man, dressed in
irtu armor, riding a black stallion. He is PRINCE ARDASHIR,
Prince Faridoon's identical twin but carrying an older
disposition. He stares ahead deep in thought, then looks up
at the top of the hill ahead of him.

30.

CUT TO - HILL

The shepherd boy quickly ducks down behind the hilltop and
quietly backs away. When he is out of sight of the valley,
he jumps up, turns around and runs as fast as he can!

EXT. VILLAGE - CONTINUED

The boy runs through a crowded residential town lined with
stacked mudbrick houses. He weaves through the townspeople
and bumps several of them as he races by.

EXT. PALACE GROUNDS - CONTINUED

The sheppard boy enters the palace grounds and passes
several man-made ponds and gardens, all surrounded by tall
painted limestone columns. He races to a large wooden gate
where two menacing guards stop him with their spears.

The boy drops to his knees and bows, panting wildly.

                       BOY
      (out of breath)
They are here! They are here!

INT. PALACE - HALL - DAY

The shepherd boy stands in the middle of the King's palace
hall lined with several golden statues of past Kings. At the
front of the hall at the top of a small set of stone steps,
King Nebtawi sits on a wooden throne.

The boy trembles with fear. Three warrior chiefs stand
beside him, several guards stand around the perimeter.

Chief Osahar stands in front of the boy.

                       KING NEBTAWI
      (interrupting)
It cannot be done. No enemy has
crossed the Nile and had the
strength to defeat Egypt. The
Prince will fail.

One of the warrior chiefs speaks.

                       CHIEF
Your enemy outnumbers you three
men to one. We cannot win this
fight. You must choose another
path. You must go to Prince
Ardashir, and seek a peaceful end.

                       KING NEBTAWI
Never! No Prince shall stand
taller than Egypt while I still
live. Any man who does not believe
this is a coward...

                       CHIEF OSAHAR
You cannot prevail!

King Nebtawi stops, shocked at Chief Osahar's boldness. The
other chiefs look to him in solidarity.

                       CHIEF OSAHAR
      (continued)
You spend your life expanding your
kingdom to the far reaches of the
world. You have killed great Kings
of men and have taken the riches
of many tribes. But you have paid
a price. Your warriors are weak
from endless war. They no longer
have the strength to fight.

King Nebtawi jumps up from his throne!

                       KING NEBTAWI
My warriors will defeat any enemy
in battle. You are a weak and
frightened child.

The King turns to the other chiefs.

32.

                       KING NEBTAWI
      (continued)
If you are true warriors of Egypt,
then tell me, will you fight with
me?

Silence... The warrior chiefs exchange disapproving looks.

                       KING NEBTAWI
      (continued)
Then you are all traitors to your
King and have no place here. I no
longer need you. Go now!

A warrior chief addresses his King.

                       CHIEF
But my King, you cannot go on...

                       KING NEBTAWI
      (interrupting)
Silence! If you will not fight
with me then I will find true
warriors who will.

King Nebtawi gestures to a servant who stands nearby. The
servant bows his head, turns around, and hurries away.

                       CHIEF OSAHAR
Foolish King! You spread nothing
but death across the world. Now
all that you have done has come
back to you. You will bring about
Egypt's destruction.

King Nebtawi gestures to several guards who stand around the
perimeter of the hall.

                       KING NEBTAWI
Get them out!

The guards surround and push the angry chiefs away. King
Nebtawi sits back down in his chair, enraged.

INT. PALACE GROUNDS - DAY

Hamadi walks down a long hallway. He is annoyed yet
apprehensive as he turns into a large room.

INT. BATHING ROOM - CONTINUED

33.

In the middle of a wide open air room, King Nebtawi stands
naked in a large carved out hole in the ground that is lined
with smooth stones. The hole is filled with hot water. Two
nude females vigorously wash his body with small blocks of
SWABU (SOAP).

The King speaks to his son as if conducting ordinary
business affairs.

                       KING NEBTAWI
Next harvest you will be married.
I have chosen a daughter of Nubia
as your wife. She is the most
beautiful of all her people. She
arrives in three days.

                       HAMADI
I do not wish to be married now.

                       KING NEBTAWI
You will do as I command. And you
will not disobey me. It is the way
it has always been done.

                       HAMADI
But father..

                       KING NEBTAWI
That is all.

Hamadi opens his mouth to argue, just as a servant enters
the room and bows.

                       SERVANT
My King. Timeaus of Athens, he has
arrived.

King Nebtawi smiles. Hamadi rolls his eyes at his father and
stomps out of the room.

EXT. PALACE - BALCANY - CONTINUED - DAY

Hamadi runs along a corridor lined with tall stone pillars,
then out onto a balcony that overlooks the MEDITERRANEAN SEA
(WADJ-WER). Hamadi stops and looks out into the water.

CLOSE UP - SHIP

A wooden TRIREME (GREEK SHIP) sails towards the bank of
north Africa. On its deck, several Greek men in CHITONS
(TUNICS) prepare the boat to dock.

CUT TO - EGYPTIAN PORT

A large gathering of Egyptian guards, priests and maidens
wait on stone steps that lead down to the wooden pier.

CUT TO - TRIREME - DECK

TIMAEUS, 30s, stands silently staring at the African shore.
He is blonde, handsome, sharp-witted and strong. At his side
is his wife ESPASIA, 20s, a stunning dark-haired woman
dawning a long PEPLOS (GREEK DRESS).

CUT TO - EGYPTIAN PORT

The Greek boat approaches the pier and wades into the
shallow water. Several Egyptian soldiers throw ropes out
onto the boat. The Greek crewman grab the reed-fiber ropes
and tie them to wooden posts on the deck of their ship.

The Egyptians guide the boat into port and place a wide
wooden plank on the ship to connect it to the pier.

Timaeus, Espasia and their ginger-haired daughter AGATHA,
14, walk onto shore and up the stone steps. A handful of
Greek officials follow closely behind, curiously looking
around their host nation.

AT THE TOP OF THE STONE STEPS, Musim stands waiting to greet
his guests. He bows his head in salutation.

                       TIMAEUS
Greetings, High Priest of Egypt.

Musim lifts his head, surprised.

                       MUSIM
You speak our language?

                       TIMAEUS
I know many things of your people.

Musim nods and gestures with his hand for Timaeus to follow
him.

                       MUSIM
Come.

The Greeks follow Musim up the bank towards the palace
grounds. Ranks of Egyptian guards follow behind them.

INT. PALACE - HALL - DAY

Musim leads his guests through a large entryway and into the
King's palace hall.

At the front of the hall at the top of a set of stone steps,
King Nebtawi, dressed in a tiger-skin shawl, sits on his
wooden throne. Hamadi stands to his left, Queen Naeemah to
his right. Behind them a row of guards stand at attention
holding long spears.

Timaeus and his family reach the bottom of the steps, the
other Greek diplomats stand behind them. They all bow in
unison.

King Nebtawi looks at them coldly.

                       KING NEBTAWI
Timaeus of Athens. I am surprised
a gutless fool like you has agreed
to show his face in my Kingdom.

Timaeus rises from his bow. Contempt rages within him.

                       TIMAEUS
Pharaoh Nebtawi. I only come to
repay a debt owed to you by my
father. I do not enjoy visiting
your filthy and barbaric kingdom.

                       KING NEBTAWI
      (shouting)
The penalty is death for speaking
to the King in such a manner.

Timaeus and the King glare at each other. The others watch
them in panicked silence when...

A faint smile breaks on Timaeus's face... then a smirk from
King Nebtawi. Both men lose their composure and burst into
laughter.

The others, still confused, watch King Nebtawi jump off his
throne, race down the steps and give Timaeus a giant bear
hug.

                       KING NEBTAWI
Welcome friend. I see you have not
lost your humor.

36.

                       TIMAEUS
It has been many years since we
last met. I wish our meeting was
in better times.

Timaeus ushers his wife and daughter forward.

                       TIMAEUS

My wife Espasia, and my daughter
Agatha.

Espasia and Agatha curtsey. King Nebtawi turns and motions
to his family.

                       KING NEBTAWI
My Queen, Naeemah.

Queen Naeemah walks to Espasia, grabs her hands, and kisses

Espasia's nervous face lights up.

                       ESPASIA
You speak Attic?

                       QUEEN NAEEMAH
It is the business of the Queen to

INT. COURTYARD - NIGHT

King Nebtawi and Timaeus sit at a large wooden rectangular
table in an open air patio that is surrounded by tall stone
pillars. The MOON illuminates the patio with the help of
several TORCHES that surround the enclosure.

Queen Naeemah, Espasia and Agatha stand in silence against
the surrounding pillars. They exchange glances as the men
talk.

                       TIMAEUS
The Prince of Assyria comes to
claim your head, yet Egypt is
strong. You have defeated his
brother, you have mighty soldiers
to defend you, and the Nile river
to protect you. Why have you
called upon Athens for help?

                       KING NEBTAWI
The Greeks and Assyrians have been
in constant battle. Now your fight
reaches the borders of my kingdom.
They seek to destroy all I have
built.

                       TIMAEUS
Assyria attacks you for vengeance.
It was you who killed their King.
The Greeks took no part in that.
This battle is your own.

                       KING NEBTAWI
The Assyrians are a plague upon
the world. They will soon find
you. But together no enemy will
dare attack me.

                       TIMAEUS
You ask too much. My power is
failing. Democracy grows popular
among my people. If I go to war I
will lose all loyalty I have left.

Agatha stands beside a giant pillar, bored and annoyed. She
looks around the patio when something catches her eye.

38.

AGATHA'S POV to HAMADI walking down a nearby corridor.
Agatha's eyes follow him, then to her mother whose attention
remains focused on Timaues and King Nebtawi's political
discussion.

Agatha quietly backs away from the patio and follows
Hamadi's trail. None of the adults notice her leave.

King Nebtawi and Timaeus continue their debate.

                       TIMAEUS
I am sorry my friend, but I cannot
help you. You must fight this
battle alone.

                       KING NEBTAWI
Alone?

King Nebtawi bangs his fist on the table.

                       KING NEBTAWI
      (continued)
ALONE!

King Nebtawi rises from the table and stands over Timaeus,
trying to intimidate him. Timaeus does not flinch.

                       KING NEBTAWI
      (continued)
You will let Egypt burn to keep
your own power? Do not forget,
your sword belongs to Egypt by an
oath made by your father!

Timaeus looks King Nebtawi square in the eye.

                       TIMAEUS
Do not speak to me of oaths. Even
a King does not always get his
way. What you ask I cannot give.

King Nebtawi stands tall.

                       KING NEBTAWI
Then you will run and hide, but
you will never be safe. If Egypt
falls, Greece will soon follow.
And you will beg on your knees for
your life in the end.

Timaeus slowly stands up. Queen Naeemah and Espasia exchange
worried looks.

INT. CORRIDOR - MOMENTS LATER

Agatha sneaks down a hallway, hiding behind tall plants and
stone pillars. She peeks out ahead of her.

AGATHA'S POV down the corridor to Hamadi standing quietly
watching a slow procession of TWELVE PRIESTS walk by. Eight
of the priests wear decorated cotton robes with gold and
jeweled necklaces and bracelets. They carry incense and
carved religious ornaments. The remaining four priests wear
large elaborately carved wooden masks of animal gods. They
carry baskets of fruit and wheat, and large clay bowls
filled with milk and honey. They chant a baritone Aramaic
hymn that echoes through the hall.

Musim trails the end of the procession. He meets Hamadi who
accompanies him behind the other priests.

Agatha stalks behind them, peeking out from behind a tall
plant.

AGATHA'S POV to Musim who stops, then turns to look back at
her.

Agatha quickly ducks behind the plant. She waits... then
peers back over the leaves.

40.

AGATHA'S POV to Musim still looking at her. Hamadi also
turns to look at her. Musim gives a comforting smile then
reaches out his hand towards her.

Embarrassed, Agatha emerges from behind the plant and joins
them. Musim places his arm around Agatha's shoulder, and
guides her down the corridor.

EXT. TEMPLE - CONTINUED

Dawn begins to BRIGHTEN THE SKY. The priests walk into a
large outdoor temple towards a long set of stone steps
leading up to an elaborate altar made of gold, silver and
carved stone.

The procession reaches the stairs and slowly begin to climb.
Eight of the priests walk halfway up the stone steps, the
four masked priests ascend to the top and place their
offerings on the highest step.

When Hamadi and Agatha reach the bottom of the steps, Musim
stops them with his hand.

Musim climbs the stairs to the top. The gathering of priests
turn in unison to face the other side of the temple.

PRIESTS' POV towards two seventy foot tall STONE OBELISKS
standing on either side of the main entrance of the temple.
They are covered in skillfully carved hieroglyphics.

The skyline continues to BRIGHTEN... Musim raises his staff
and proclaims:

                       MUSIM
Ra! Our god of light. Awake from
your deep slumber, and be born
onto us again. You God of life.
You creator of eternity. You maker
of heaven. All the Gods rejoice in
your rising.

The other priests begin to chant louder. Their voices ring
through the temple.

The SUN rises from the horizon and illuminates the sky. Its
BRIGHT LIGHT splashes across the temple.

41.

The sun's rays touch Agatha and Hamadi's skin. Agatha grabs
Hamadi's hand and holds it tight. They both exchange brief
smiles then turn to watch the rising sun. Musim and his
priests finish their hymn.

It is morning in Egypt...

EXT. PALACE - BALCANY - MORNING

Queen Naeemah stands on a balcony overlooking a vast
botanical garden. A handfull of slaves tend to the flowers
and plants. The Queen is deep in thought, in her arms baby
Ife sleeps soundly wrapped in a small cloth blanket.

heart. I am not strong like him.

Queen Naeemah remains facing the morning sky.

                       QUEEN NAEEMAH
It is a shame a woman believes
that she can not live by both her
head and her heart. That only men
an be strong.

                       ESPASIA
War and power are the desires of
men. I do not know of such things.
What would a Queen have me do?

Queen Naeemah calls out a short vocal command and motions to
a nearby female servant. The servant rushes to her and
gently takes Ife from her arms. Queen Naeemah strides toward
Espasia.

                       QUEEN NAEEMAH
Search for the strength within
you, my sister. Find the power to
choose your own path.

Queen Naeemah places her hand on Espasia's chest over her
heart.

EXT. SEA - EVENING

The sun has almost disappeared behind the horizon, its glow
still illuminates the sky with rubescent colors.

Timeus' Trireme sails quietly back across the MEDITERRANEAN
SEA (WADJ-WER).

CUT TO - NEARBY HILLSIDE

Hamadi, Jabari, Tehuti and Kontar sit on a hill watching the
Greek ship fade from view.

Tehuti holds a cigar made of dried leaves and places the tip
into a clay saucer filled with burning embers until the end
of the cigar is lit. Tehuti takes a few puffs of the cigar -
he coughs loudly as he blows out the smoke. Kontar and
Jebari laugh at him.

Hamadi stares down at his hands, detached, deep in thought.

CLOSE UP ON HAMADI'S HANDS as he plays with the GOLD RING on
his finger.

Tehuti hands Jabari the cigar. Jabari takes a few puffs then
passes it to Hamadi. Hamadi shakes his head.

                       HAMADI
Yes I know. I am reminded of it
every day. I don't want to talk
about it anymore.

Tehuti teases his friend and shouts.

                       TEHUTI
All hail King Hamadi, the only
King who does not want the job.

The three friends laugh at Hamadi. Hamadi tries to remain
solemn, but starts to laugh.

INT. PALACE - HALL - DAY

The last rays of sunlight barely light the great hall in the
King's palace. A handful of servants light torches mounted
on the stone walls.

A short, fat black-skinned man adorned in gold piercings and
copper jewelry walks through the hall. He is LISIMBA, a
great chief of Nubia. He is followed by a young girl who
wears a white linen dress and a thin woven veil that covers
her face.

The girl and her father approach the front of the hall where
King Nebtawi and Queen Naeemah stand together.

Lisimba bows to his hosts. King Nebtawi and Queen Naeemah
return the greeting.

Lisimba steps aside and pulls the young girl forward.

                       LISIMBA
My daughter, Tamari.

Lisimba removes the veil from Tamari's head exposing her
face - she is a youthful, stunning Nubian beauty of fifteen.
She bows nervously.

44.

                       KING NEBTAWI
She shall make a fine wife for my
son, and a most beautiful Queen.

Lisimba looks around the hall.

                       LISIMBA
Where is your son? Will he not
come to meet his new bride?

                       KING NEBTAWI
Hamadi shall be summoned at once.

King Nebtawi gestures to a nearby servant. The servant nods
and leaves the room.

INT. PALACE - FEASTING ROOM - LATER

PAN ACROSS a long wooden table in the middle of a large
room. The table stands a foot off the ground and is covered
with an elaborate buffet of golden bowls and plates full of
fruits, meats, nuts and large cups of wine.

Queeen Naeemah, Lisimba and Tamari sit on feather pillows
around the table. Nobody is eating... they sit in silence
exchanging awkward glances. Lisimba is impatient.

Tamari awes at the feast in front of her. Trying not to be
noticed, she discretely reaches out for a nearby GRAPE - her
father watches her and clears his throat. Tamari obeys and
quickly puts her hand down.

Queen Naeemah gives an embarrassed smile.

CLOSE UP - HALLWAY

King Nebtawi whispers loudly, almost shouting.

                       KING NEBTAWI
Find my son! Do not return without
him if you wish to live another
day!

The servant quickly bows and runs away.

EXT. FIELD - NIGHT

A giant FIRE PIT lights up the night sky. It is surrounded
by hundreds of men and women sprawled across a large grass
field. Amidst the crowd a group of men play tribal rhythms
on African drums. It's a celebration!

VARIOUS SHOTS OF THE CELEBRATION

Men and women gather on woven mats eating berries and nuts,
and drinking clay cups of HEQET (BEER)... An intoxicated
group of men balk at a group of young girls walking by. The
girls roll their eyes and giggle in response... A man dips a
clay cup into a large barrel of heqet, and drinks... A large
group of women perform a synchronized dance around the fire
pit to the rhythm of the drums...

Hamadi, Jabari, and Tehuti sit on a large woven mat along
with three girls - they all drink and laugh.

Kontar stands in front of them, his eyes sunken and glazed
over. He sways a few times, then collapses to the ground.
The others laugh hysterically at him.

Hamadi teases his friend.

                       HAMADI
Kontar, you barely drank half the
cup.

One of the girls challenges Hamadi.

                       GIRL
Can you do better?

Hamadi stands up as the group heckles him. Hamadi picks up a
clay cup off the ground, walks to a large barrel, and dunks
the cup in. He pulls the cup out and walks back to his
friends.

Hamadi lifts the cup as if making a toast, then puts it to
his lips and chugs.

His fiends cheer in unison.

                       GROUP
Go! Go! Go! Go!

The drums go SILENT... All sounds of laughter, talking and
dancing STOP. Hamadi continues to drink.

The cheers of Hamadi's friends fall silent as they watch him
empty his cup.

46.

Hamadi belches a loud BURP, laughs and looks at his friends.

HAMADI'S POV to his friends who are frozen still, their eyes
wide with fear. They quickly throw themselves to the ground.

Confused, Hamadi looks around to see the entire crowd
kneeling. He then turns around... and sees King Nebtawi
standing behind him, a livid look on his face. Hamadi's
heart drops.

                       KING NEBTAWI
Disgraceful! On this of all days.
Today you meet your future Queen
yet here you are, drinking like a
common fool!

King Nebtawi slaps the cup out of Hamadi's hand. It crashes
to the ground, scaring those nearby.

                       KING NEBTAWI
      (continued)
You have no pride in yourself! You
have no pride in your family! You
have no pride in your people!

Hamadi bows his head in shame.

                       KING NEBTAWI

I will not leave Egypt in the
hands of a foolish child!

Hamadi speaks, defeated.

What do you want from me father?

                       KING NEBTAWI
Nothing! Never again! You are not
my son! I wish now you were never
born!

Hamadi looks at his father in astonishment. He tries to
fight back tears but fails.

Jabari, Kontar and Tehuti watch in silent sadness.

Hamadi begins to weep, he rushes away through the stunned
crowd.

King Nebtawi looks after his son, then turns to give a
scowling glare at Jabari, Kontar and Tehuti who all quickly
bow their heads back down.

Two Greek men draped in wool peplos robes gallop through a
green pasture riding white stallions.

The horses trot through a large wooden gate and stop in
front of a stable where a young fair skinned servant waits.

Timaeus and his ADVISER dismount their horses and hand their
reigns to the servant. They walk up a short path towards a
large white-stone structure.

My country is changing. The people

The two men continue up the path to a massive ornately-

EXT. VILLA - BALCANY - DAY

Espasia sits on the ledge of a giant outdoor gazebo made of
wood and white marble. She stares out in the distance over
the city of ATHENS, lost in thought.

FAVOR ESPASIA as a figure walks up behind her and places a
hand on her shoulder. Espasia jolts as if awaken from a

                       ESPASIA
You are home so soon? It cannot
mean good news.

The hand belongs to Timaeus. He kisses Espasia on the lips.

                       TIMAEUS
I do not wish to talk of politics.
Tell me, why do you sit out here
alone?

48.

Espasia turns back to look out at the scenery before her.

                       ESPASIA
Must we do nothing to help Egypt?

Timaeus sits down next to Espasia and puts his arm around
her.

                       TIMAEUS
Your heart weeps for our friends.
But if I send Greek men to die in
an Egyptian war, I will have no
allies left in Greece.

Espasia contemplates her husband's words... then her face
brightens with an idea.

                       ESPASIA
No, but you will have a King of
Egypt.

Timaeus looks at Espasia confused, Espasia stands.

                       ESPASIA
      (continued)
Go and help the King win his war.
But ask a favor in return. Invite
the Pharoah to Athens with his
riches of gold and silver. Let
your people witness your
brotherhood with the mighty King
of Africa. He will help you win
the hearts and loyalty of your
country. Greeks always love a
spectacle.

Timaeus opens his mouth to speak but Espasia places her hand
on over his lips before he can utter a word.

                       ESPASIA
      (continued)
Timaeus, take this chance. War and
change will come whether you seek
it or not. Only you can decide how
you will be remembered when it is
all done.

Timaeus holds Espasia's hand and kisses it gently.

EXT. EGYPT - FORREST - DAY

In a lush dense forest, the chirps of INSECTS and howls of
WOODLAND CREATURES call out in the shade. Birds fly among
the branches, snakes slither among the roots.

Out of a thick brush, WILD BOAR emerges from the shrubbery.
It happily grazes among the trees and bushes, nibbling on
fallen berries.

NEARBY in a grouping of thick bushes, the copper tip of a
SPEAR quietly emerges. It is held by JABARI, who surfaces
from the foliage and slowly approaches the wild boar.

Jabari glances over to a nearby bush.

CUT TO - NEARBY BUSH

KONTAR, also carrying a spear, slowly emerges. He carefully
watches the boar, then looks up into the trees.

CUT TO - TREES

TEHUTI lays across a high branch. He slowly pulls out a LONG
BAMBOO TUBE and places a sharp thin piece of BONE in one
end. He maneuvers his body to get a better aim at the wild
boar...

... As he does so, the branch underneath him begins to
CREAK. Unaware, Tehuti places the bamboo tube to his mouth
and aims.

Jabari and Kontar wait silently, barely breathing, stalking
their prey...

The branch holding Tehuti begins to CRACK and suddenly...
SNAP!

The branch breaks! Tehuti falls to the ground. He hits the
ground with a loud THUD. The sound startles the wild boar
which takes off running.

(IN COPTIC - SUBTITLED)

                       JABARI
Idiot!!

Kontar runs after the boar followed by an angry Jabari.

Tehuti slowly gets up, rubs his back then chases after his
friends - the three chase the boar through the forest out to
an OPEN MEADOW.

50.

BIRD'S EYE POV watching Jabari, Tehuti and Kontar chase the
boar.

EXT. NEARBY HILL

Hamadi sits on the edge of a stone wall that overlooks the
meadow. He is lost in thought... alone... and a bit bored.
He notices his friends below in pursuit of the boar. He
jumps up and shouts.

                       HAMADI
Jabari!

HAMADI'S POV to the meadow below as Jabari hears Hamadi's
call and stops to look up at him.

Hamadi waives at Jabari - Jabari gives Hamadi a melancholy
stare, then turns away and runs after his friends.

Hamadi watches in confusion.

EXT. RIVER BANK - LATER

Jabari, Kontar and Tehuti walk down a river bank to a long
wooden raft tethered in the shallow water. Kontar and Tehuti
carry a long tree branch on their shoulders with the DEAD
BOAR tied and hanging from it.

Hamadi runs down the river bank behind them and calls out.

                       HAMADI
Jabari! Tehuti!

Jabari, Tehuti and Kontar remain silent. They give Hamadi
quick glances then lower their heads and continue walking to
the river.

Hamadi reaches Jabari and grabs him.

                       HAMADI
Why do you do this? You heard me
calling you. Why will you not
speak to me?

Jabari, Kontar and Tehuti exchange nervous looks.

                       HAMADI
      (continued)
Speak to me.

Kontar reluctantly speaks.

51.

                       KONTAR
Our silence is not our choice. You
must understand Hamadi.

                       TEHUTI
We are forbidden to speak to you.
Your father commanded it. We are
not even to be in your presence.

Hamadi looks at his three friends, astonished.

                       KONTAR
Our families will be banished if
we disobey the King, Hamadi. I am
sorry.

Jabari, Kontar and Tehuti turn their backs and walk down to
the the water.

Tears begin to swell in Hamadi's eyes.

                       HAMADI
My friends?

Hamadi's friends load the wild boar on the raft and paddle
out into the river.

Hamadi watches after them. He swells with anger.

INT. PALACE - HALLWAY - DAY

Hamadi storms through a corridor, turns a corner and enters
a small room.

INT. PALACE - BATHING ROOM - CONTINUED

King Nebtawi sits on a simple wooden stool. A young servant
paints KOHL (BLACK EYELINER) around his eyes.

Hamadi grabs a CLAY DISH from a nearby table and throws it
against the wall. The dish smashes into pieces.

                       HAMADI
You sent them away! You sent my
friends away from me!

King Nebtawi remains calm. Hamadi glares at the servant who
recognizes the heated moment and scurries away.

                       HAMADI
      (continued)
Father! Answer me!

52.

                       KING NEBTAWI
It was necessary. I did it for
your own good.

Hamadi's anger turns to sorrow.

                       HAMADI
They are my friends, father. How
can you do this?

                       KING NEBTAWI
It is done. I will hear no more
about it.

Tears stream down Hamadi's face.

                       HAMADI
This is not right! You can not do
this!

A WOMAN YELLING is heard from outside of the room. Hamadi
and his father turn to look at the entryway as Queen Naeemah
bursts into the room holding a PIECE OF PAPYRUS PARER. She
races to King Nebtawi and hands it to him.

                       QUEEN NAEEMAH
A letter from Greece. Timaeus has
changed his mind. He has agreed to
help us. He will fight with you.

King Nebtawi's eyes race through the words on the paper. He
jumps off his seat.

                       QUEEN NAEEMAH
      (continued)
He asks for gold and silver. And
that you go to Athens and make
public your support of his rule.

The Queen grabs her husband's arm.

                       QUEEN NAEEMAH
      (continued)
Nebtawi, you must do this.

King Nebtawi thinks...

                       KING NEBTAWI
Prepare my transport. We will
leave at sunrise.

Hamadi, feeling ignored, glares at his father, rolls his
eyes at his mother, then leaves the room.

EXT. EGYPT - MORNING

The sun rises in the morning sky. It illuminates a
mountainside village of mudbrick houses with straw roofs.
Only a handful of residents stir through the dirt streets.

EXT. PORT - DAY

A line of slaves walk single file down a dirt embankment.
They march onto a wooden platform and out onto a large
wooden ship that wades in the harbor. The men carry wooden
crates and woven sacks and the women carry small baskets on
their heads. Nearby, six large men pull a long rope tethered
to an annoyed elephant.

King Nebtawi follows behind the procession, accompanied by
Musim. The King stops and turns to his high priest.

                       KING NEBTAWI
I leave Egypt in your hands.
Protect her. I will not be away
long.

King Nebtawi walks to the ship as Musim watches after him.
FAVOR MUSIM as a man walks up beside him. It is Chief
Osahar, noticeably angry.

                       CHIEF OSAHAR
The King has lost his mind. He now
brings the Greeks into his war. He
will cover the world in bloodshed.
The time has come. Something must
be done.

Musim does not move or speak. The two men watch their King
board his ship.

EXT. SEA - DAY

The Egyptian ship crosses the middle of the MEDITERRANEAN
SEA (WADJ- WER) - its oars slash through the water with
speedy precision.

INT. SHIP - BOWELS

Below the deck of the ship, forty men sit in two rows,
pushing-and-pulling their long oars in unison. In front of
them an Egyptian guard grunts a HEEV-HO rhythm, directing
the pace of the rowers' strokes.

INT. ATHENS, GREECE - VILLA - DAY

Espasia sits in front of a carved oak vanity table covered
with ivory bowls filled with perfumes, oils and colored
pastes. She calmly dabs red oil onto her lips while looking
at herself in a small hand mirror made of polished metal.

Timaeus nervously paces around the room behind Espasia... It
annoys her.

(IN ATTIC - SUBTITLED)

                       ESPASIA
Calm yourself husband. The Gods
have blessed this day upon us.

                       TIMAEUS
I cannot. What if the people do
not come? What then?

                       ESPASIA
They will come, Timaeus. There has
been talk of it all over Greece.

Espasia continues applying her makeup. Timaeus continues
pacing when Agatha bursts into the room!

Timaeus freezes. Espasia jumps up out of her chair - her
composure completely vanished. They both stare at Agatha in
nervous anticipation.

                       AGATHA
They're here!

Timaeus and Espasia look at each other then race out of the
room. Agatha hurries behind them.

INT. VILLA - HALLWAY - CONTINUED

Timaeus, Espasia and Agatha rush down a long hallway lined
with ornate marble pillars. They turn the corner to go
outside.

EXT. VILLA - COURTYARD - CONTINUED

Timaeus quickly walks out onto a stone porch that overlooks
a massive lawn spreading across several acres.

Espasia and Agatha join Timaeus on the porch to find
THOUSANDS of Greek citizens filling the lawn to capacity.
Timaeus is greeted with roaring CHEERS.

55.

A large stone wall encloses the lawn with a thick wooden
gate at its center. The crowd is separated by several Greek
guards who create a pathway from the gate to the edge of the
porch.

Timaeus raises his hands and addresses the crowd.

                       TIMAEUS
People of Greece. I am pleased so
many of you have come. In these
times I know many of you have lost
faith in your government. Please
know I have always given my life
to the service and protection of
the Athenien people. But today,
let us cast aside our politics and
open our hearts. I present to you
my friend and ally from across the
southern sea, Nebtawi, the great
King of Egypt!

Timaeus gestures to the wooden gate on the other side of the
lawn - the crowd turns to look.

Two Athenian soldiers standing in front of the gate grab its
giant handles and pull the gate open.

Only DUST can be seen from beyond the open doorway. The
crowd push and nudge each other for a better view.

Out of the silence, an AFRICAN DRUM CADENCE echoes from
beyond the gate.

As the dust settles, TWELVE EGYPTIAN DRUMMERS march in two
lines down the pathway.

Behind the drummers, SIX YOUNG GIRLS carry long wooden poles
decorated with colorful cloth ribbons that dance in the
breeze. SIXTEEN EGYPTIAN SOLDIERS follow behind the young
girls.

Behind the soldiers, a single GIANT ELEPHANT enters the
lawn. Hamadi sits on its back dressed in a white linen robe,
a colorful stone necklace and dawning an ALEF (FEATHERED
CROWN). His attempts to look dignified are overpowered by
his overwhelming nervousness.

The Greek audience awes at the parade.

Agatha watches Hamadi from atop the STONE PORCH, she
blushes. Timaeus and Espasia look on with pride.

56.

A small ATHENIAN BOY climbs up onto the ledge of the wall to
get a prime viewing spot.

The crowd looks upward at a large object entering the lawn.
It's massive SHADOW shades them from the sun.

It is a GIANT GOLDEN CARRIAGE, pulled by twenty men.

King Nebtawi and Queen Naeemah, who carries baby Ife in her
arms, sit atop the lavish carriage. The King dawns a
lion-skinned shawl and a PSCHENT CROWN and the Queen in a
gold linen dress layered by colorful feathers and gold
jewelry.

The crowd cheers!

The carriage stops at the foot of the porch. King Nebtawi
and Queen Naeemah join Hamadi and walk up the stone steps.
The families exchange bows then Timaeus, Espasia and Agatha
usher their guests inside.

INT. VILLA - HALLWAY - CONTINUED

Timaeus, Espasia and Agatha lead King Nebtawi, Queen Naeemah
and Hamadi back through the pillared hallway.

Timaeus stops and directs King Nebtawi to a nearby room.

(IN COPTIC - SUBTITLED)

                       TIMAEUS
Follow me.

Timaeus gestures to Hamadi.

                       TIMAEUS
      (continued)
Prince Hamadi. This way.

King Nebtawi quickly interjects.

                       KING NEBTAWI
No! He will stay here.

Hamadi drops his head, embarrassed! Queen Naeemah gives her
husband a scolding glare.

Timaeus escorts King Nebtawi into the room.

Espasia places her arm on Queen Naeemah's shoulder.

57.

(IN ATTIC - SUBTITLED)

                       ESPASIA
Come, allow me to show you my
home.

Queen Naeemah smiles as Espasia guides her down the hallway.

INT. VILLA - CANOPIED ROOM - CONTINUED

Espasia leads Queen Naeemah into a large foyer filled with
woven couches and oversized feather pillows.

Agatha stalls behind her mother, then grabs Hamadi's hand.
Hamadi jolts at her touch. Agatha motions for him to follow
her.

                       AGATHA
      (whispering)
Come.

Agatha pulls Hamadi away unnoticed. Espasia and Queen
Naeemah remain distracted in conversation.

EXT. VILLA - GARDEN - DAY

Agatha leads Hamadi into a lush tended garden filled with
ferns, trees and colorful flowers in bloom. Sunlight
sparkles off the white vine-covered stone walls that
surround the foilege.

Agatha takes Hamadi to a small wooden bench in the middle of
the garden. She motions with her hands for Hamadi to sit
down.

                       AGATHA
Stay.

Hamadi obeys and sits. Agatha runs off.

Hamadi looks around curiously. He notices a kaleidoscope of
butterflies fluttering among the dangling vines above him
and enjoys their vibrant colors.

Agatha returns carrying an oversized sheet of papyrus paper.
She places the paper on a small wooden table and sits down
on a nearby stool. She picks up a long thin piece of BLACK
ROCK, gives Hamadi a brief glance, and begins to draw.

CLOSE UP to AGATHA'S HAND drawing Hamadi's eyes... his
nose... his mouth...

58.

Hamadi leans forward but Agatha pulls the corner of the
paper to block his view. She smiles at him - he smiles back.
Agatha continues drawing, quietly studying Hamadi's face and
torso as Hamadi playfully poses in a regal position.

FADE TO WHITE...

EXT. EGYPT - FARMLAND - NIGHT

The sun has just disappeared behind the horizon but its glow
still illuminates several acres of farmland and wheat
fields.

Musim stands in front of a golden stallion. He grazes his
hand over the steed's head and mumbles quietly as if having
an intimate conversation.

FAVOR Musim as a FIGURE appears behind him. Musim does not
turn around to face his company, but speaks.

(IN COPTIC - SUBTITLED)

                       MUSIM
I know why you have come. I have
been told of your treason. You are
a fool to betray your King so
publicly.

The figure speaks. It is Chief Osahar.

                       CHIEF OSAHAR
I do not deny it. But you have
known this day would come. The
King's power must come to an end.

                       MUSIM
Must it? Is power the only quality
of a King? Power cannot survive
without faith and wisdom to guide
it.

A RUFFLING NOISE is heard in the trees nearby. Both Musim
and Chief Osahar turn to look at the dense brush nearby...
but see nothing.

                       MUSIM
      (continued)
I will never betray my King. My
faith commands me to follow the
King to whatever end.

59.

                       CHIEF OSAHAR
To whatever end? Will you condemn
your people to death? Your faith
in the King should not surpass
your faith in Egypt.

Musim finally turns to face the Chief.

                       MUSIM
And what will happen if the King
should fall? Who will lead the
people to glory? You?

                       CHIEF OSAHAR
No. I am not a symbol of peace. It
is you who the people must follow.
If you show them your loyalty.

                       MUSIM
Loyalty?

Musim approaches Chief Osahar, calm but stern.

                       MUSIM
      (continued)
Here my words. Turn around, walk
away, and never speak of this
again or the Gods will curse you
for your betrayal.

Chief Osahar puffs his chest and glares at Musim.

                       MUSIM
      (continued)
Go!

The Chief reluctantly concedes - he turns and storms away.
Musim watches after him, noticeably worried.

EXT. ATHENS, GREECE - HILLSIDE - DAY

Timaeus' beautiful white-stone villa stands among neatly
tended trees and bushes.

INT. VILLA - LARGE HALL - DAY

Hamadi stands alone in a large marble-columned room. He
looks up at an oversized MARBLE STATUE OF TIMAEUS standing
on an engraved pedestal. Hamadi marvels at the statue's
beauty when the sound of a DOOR OPENING is heard. Hamadi
looks toward the end of the room to see Timaeus and his

60.

father enter in mid conversation. Two Greek soldiers follow
behind them.

                       TIMAEUS
Our paths will soon lead us to
join in battle. All my power in
Greece depends on our victory.

                       KING NEBTAWI
We will defeat the Assyrians. And
you shall have your glory.

                       TIMAEUS
You must know I do not share in
your fearless hope.

Timaeus and King Netbawi stop and face each other.

                       TIMAEUS
      (continued)
My friend. I can not promise many
soldiers. And the road to Egypt
will be long. But Athens will
come.

King Nebtawi places his hand on Timaeus's shoulder.

                       KING NEBTAWI
Your friendship and sacrifice will
be celebrated by my people from
this day on.

The two friends hug.

                       TIMAEUS
Fight hard my friend.

King Nebtawi leaves the villa. Hamadi follows behind him.

carved in the image of OSIRIS, the God of the afterlife.
Musim holds a large golden pot filled with burning sage, its
smoke rises in the air.

A GUARD enters the temple behind him. Musim turns to the
guard, annoyed at the interruption. The guard bows.

                       GUARD
The King has returned. He demands
to see you.

Several guards stand at attention along the perimeter of a
large empty chamber lit only by the fire of several torches.
Chief Osahar already stands in the middle of the room. He
sees Musim and calls out to the guards.

                       CHIEF OSAHAR
What is the meaning of this?
Answer me!

The guards remain silent and still. The Chief and High
Priest turn to the room's entrance just as King Nebtawi
walks in. He enters calmly and paces around them.

                       KING NEBTAWI
Faith. Honor. Loyalty. That is
what Egypt is built upon. That is
how I lead this nation. Yet I
return home and find my two
closest advisers have turned
against me.

62.

King Nebtawi stops in front of them, and waits for a
confession.

                       CHIEF OSAHAR
There is no truth to your words.
Only foolish whispers. There is no
threat to your crown...

                       KING NEBTAWI
      (interrupting)
You speak lies traitor! I know of
your plot against me. You seek to
take my throne.

The King turns to Musim.

                       KING NEBTAWI
      (continued)
...And in my place name the Priest
as King. But Egypt is mine.

                       CHIEF OSAHAR
Yours? What about your people?
Must they not live in peace? Must
they be bled dry by your thirst
for eternal glory?

                       KING NEBTAWI
Silence heathen! Remember you
speak to the King!

                       CHIEF OSAHAR
I speak to no King. Only a
frightened and weak man who has
ruined the greatness of Egypt!

                       KING NEBTAWI
SILENCE!

SMACK! King Nebtawi slaps his Chief across the face!

                       KING NEBTAWI
      (continued)
You shall pay for those words with
your life.

                       CHIEF OSAHAR
You may kill me to ease your fear.
But many will take my place
against you. This war you cannot
win.

63.

The King is enraged! He walks to a guard who stands against
the wall and grabs a long wooden staff from his hand. The
King walks back to Chief Osahar and raises the staff in the
air.

                       KING NEBTAWI
Here, in the presence of Maat, God
of truth and justice, I Pharaoh
Nebtawi, proclaim your life in
this world is at an end.

The King calls to his guards.

                       KING NEBTAWI
      (continued)
To the pike.

The King slams the bottom of his staff on the floor with a
loud CLACK. The guards rush to surround Chief Osahar and
grab him. The Chief struggles to get free but fails. He
curses at King Nebtawi.

                       CHIEF OSAHAR
I piss on your throne! You shall
die a without honor and become my
slave in the afterlife!

The guards pull Chief Osahar away out of the room. King
Nebtawi turns to Musim...

four feet from the ground. A guard commands him.

                       GUARD
Kneel!

Chief Osahar spits in the guard's face. The guard punches
him in the face.

The guards grab the Chief and raise him over the wooden pike
then lower him down on the pike's edge. The Chief struggles
with all his might as the pike pierces through his stomach.
He screams in agony!

64.

Hamadi watches his father and Musim from the entryway.

                       KING NEBTAWI
And what shall be done with you?

                       MUSIM
I am guilty of nothing.

                       KING NEBTAWI
You are guilty! You did not speak
of a plan to betray your King.

                       MUSIM
I do not deal in the politics of
men. I head only the Gods. It has
always been this way.

                       KING NEBTAWI
Do not talk to me of the Gods!
They can not save you now.

                       MUSIM
The Gods have never failed me. Nor
will they fail you, if you listen
to them.

                       KING NEBTAWI
Enough! I will not allow a traitor
to live in my kingdom. I shall
spare your life, but here this.
From this day you are banished
from Egypt, and are never to
return as long as you walk this
earth.

65.

Musim is astonished!

                       MUSIM
...you cannot.

                       KING NEBTAWI
I cannot? I CANNOT!? I AM EGYPT!
ME!

Musim looks at his King, stunned and saddened.

                       MUSIM
Then there is nothing more to say,
my King.

mad? You have banished the high
priest of Egypt. Father!

King Nebtawi is exhausted.

                       KING NEBTAWI
Leave me alone.

Hamadi persists.

                       HAMADI
You talk of strength! You talk of
wisdom! Yet you rule by fear!

                       KING NEBTAWI
LEAVE ME ALONE!

                       HAMADI
That is why your people hate you.
They see what you truly are. A
coward!

66.

King Nebtawi roars! He charges at Hamadi, pushes him against
the wall, wraps his hands around his neck and chokes him.
Hamadi struggles to breathe.

                       KING NEBTAWI
I will crush your neck.

King Nebtawi tightens his grip. He watches the light fade
from his son's eyes... then releases his hands. Hamadi falls
to the ground gasping violently for air.

The King collapses to the floor across from his son,
exhausted. His mind spins.

                       KING NEBTAWI
If you speak to me that way again,
I will kill you.

Hamadi struggles to speak.

                       HAMADI
Then I will speak no more. I will
leave Egypt with Musim and never
return.

                       KING NEBTAWI
You will not.

Hamadi struggles but stands up.

                       HAMADI
You fear Musim. I can see it. The
people love him. That is why you
send him away.

                       KING NEBTAWI
You speak lies.

                       HAMADI
No. I speak truth. Egypt will turn
against you.

Hamadi staggers out of the room.

                       KING NEBTAWI
If you leave, I shall call you my
enemy, and show you no mercy.

                       HAMADI
Then I am your enemy. Musim shall
be my father now.

67.

                       KING NEBTAWI
You will not leave.

Hamadi walks out of the room. King Nebtawi screams after his
son.

                       KING NEBTAWI
      (continued)
YOU WILL NOT LEAVE!

INT. TEMPLE - NIGHT

Musim stands somberly at a tall wooden table, carefully
rolling a pile of papyrus scrolls around a long thin piece
of wood.

BEHIND Musim, two rows of guards enter the temple and stand
on either side of the entryway. Musim turns around to them.

The guards do not move or speak. Musim studies them... and
begins to realize the meaning of the interruption. He looks
up to the stone ceiling and closes his eyes in silent
prayer.

From the entryway, a TALL MUSCULAR SOLDIER enters the temple
room carrying a large COPPER KNIFE.

A guard approaches him.

                       SOLDIER
My King... It is done.

King Nebtawi raises his head, thinks, then gets up from his
chair.

                       KING NEBTAWI
Bring me to him.

INT. TEMPLE - HALLWAY - NIGHT

King Nebtawi follows the guard down the hall as CRYING is
heard coming from within the temple room. King Nebtawi
enters.

INT. TEMPLE - CONTINUED

68.

Hamadi kneels on the floor weeping. He cradles Musim's dead
body in his arms - blood drips to the floor from a large
STAB WOUND in Musim's chest. Queen Naeemah stands over
Hamadi also with tears in her eyes.

Hamadi looks up at his father. He screams!

                       HAMADI
DEMON!

Hamadi lets go of Musim's body and furiously charges at his
father but is grabbed by two guards who hold him back.
Hamadi struggles to get free but fails.

                       HAMADI
I hate you! I HATE YOU!

Hamadi pushes away the two guards and runs out of the room.

Queen Naeemah tries to speak but the King points his finger
in her face before she can utter a word.

                       KING NEBTAWI
Do not speak!

Queen Naeemah closes her mouth. One of the guards speaks.

                       GUARD
My King.

The guard points down to the center of the floor. The King
and Queen look down.

OVERHEAD POV at Musim's body laying motionless as blood
flows across the floor underneath him. The blood pattern
creates the image of a large JACKAL HEAD (two pointed ears
and a long snout).

                       QUEEN NAEEMAH
It is Anubis. The God of death. It
is a curse.

The Queen looks at her husband, still angry.

                       QUEEN NAEEMAH
      (continued)
We are doomed.

King Nebtawi looks down at the symbol in defiance. Queen
Naeemah wipes the tears from her eyes then leaves the room.

mountains. Hamadi rides Hathor through a deep mountain
valley, steering around large boulders and rocks.

EXT. FORREST - CONTINUED

The moon and stars shine brightly in the NIGHT SKY
illuminating the vast African wood as Hamadi and Hathor
cross though a gathering of thick brush.

EXT. FIELD - CONTINUED

Hamadi sits under a tall sycamore tree in front of a SMALL
FIRE he has made.

Hamadi takes a bite of a large rabbit impaled on a stick and
cooked over the fire. Hathor silently nibbles on nearby
grass.

Hamadi looks up at the sky. He stretches and yawns... then
lays down on his back and folds his arms behind his head.

HAMADI'S POV to the bright full moon shining in the sky.

                       HAMADI
Khonsu, great spirit of the moon.
With your eternal light, help me
mourn the loss of a noble friend.
Guide my path in life and in
death, and make my heart a holy
temple worthy of your divinity.

Hamadi slowly closes his eyes... and falls asleep.

FADE TO WHITE...

70.

EXT. GRASSY FIELD - MORNING

OVERHEAD POV of Hamadi's face in the glow of dawn. He wakes
up and opens his eyes as a SHADOW covers his face.

HAMADI'S POV to Hathor standing over him. She lowers her
head and licks his face.

Hamadi pets Hathor and sits up.

                       HAMADI
Good morning, Hathor.

Hamadi stands up and looks around his new surroundings.
Hathor nudges him with her nose.

                       HAMADI
      (continued)
Come, you must be thirsty.

Hamadi takes the twine reigns of Hathor and guides her away.

EXT. RIVER BANK - CONTINUED

Hamadi walks to the upper bank of the rive and looks down at
the valley below - his face fills with confusion and
disbelief.

Hamadi pulls Hathor down to an ARID and BARREN valley floor.

Hamadi reaches down to touch the dry earth. He grabs a clump
of dirt, it crumbles out of his hand.

                       HAMADI
The Nile river... It is gone!

The sound of CHIRPING is heard from overhead. Hamadi looks
up to the sky.

HAMADI'S POV to a wake of VULTURES circling above him. They
hover for a moment then swiftly dive toward the ground to
feast.

Hamadi watches the vultures descend revealing THOUSANDS OF
DYING FISH spread across the dry valley floor, many
twitching and convulsing for last gasps of life. Several
vultures already feast on their remains.

Hamadi reaches for a small taut leather canteen at his side.
He pulls on a thin string to open it and lifts the sack over
his face. Only a FEW DROPS OF WATER fall onto his tongue.
Hamadi worriedly looks at the empty sack then turns to
Hathor.

71.

                       HAMADI
We must find water soon, or we
shall not survive the desert.

Hamadi mounts Hathor and continues on.

EXT. DESERT - DAY

The sun glares down from the cloudless sky above. Hamadi
rides Hathor through boundless desert sands. Sweat drenches
his body.

CUT TO - LATER

Moving across the infinite desert dunes, Hathor's stride
slows from a run... to a gallop... to a trot... to a slow
crawl.

CUT TO - LATER

Hamadi now walks on foot. He pulls Hathor through a barren
savanna covered in dead grass. Several CARCASSES of
crocodiles and hippos lay across the dry earth.

CUT TO - LATER

Hamadi kneels down on the rocky earth among a group of large
rocks. His skin is dry and cracked, his lips chapped. He
desperately overturns rocks, looking for treasure
underneath.

Hamadi overturns a rock then carefully examines the dirt
below it. He frantically digs with his hands until he
unearths a handful of BEETLES AND SLUGS. Hamadi grabs a
handful and awes at the insects as they crawl through his
fingers then eagerly shoves them into his mouth.

CUT TO - LATER

Hamadi stumbles along the dry valley floor, his eyes glazed,
his breath weak. Every step takes all the energy from his
body.

In the distance behind Hamadi, HATHOR lays dead on the
ground, her body thin and emaciated.

Hamadi takes a step... pauses, sways back and forth, then
drops to the ground on his back. His breath weakens, he
gasps for air and looks up at the sky...

HAMADI'S POV to the SUN blazing high in the sky above him
like an angry god.

72.

FADE TO WHITE...

INT. GRASS HUT - NIGHT

CLOSE UP on Hamadi's face which now has been cleaned and
tended to, CANDLE LIGHT flickers across his face. He slowly
opens his eyes, looks around then raises his head, confused.

Hamadi finds himself lying on an elevated wooden table in
the corner of a small dilapidated mud and grass hut.

HAMADI'S POV to the interior of the hut. Only a small wooden
stool, some clay pots, and scattered wooden tools fill the
space.

A RUSTLING sound is heard from outside. Hamadi quickly lays
back down and closes his eyes, pretending to be asleep.

A firgure walks into the hut and moves about the room.

Hamadi opens one eye and peeks at the figure.

HAMADI'S POV to a DARK-SKINNED BOY, about eight years old.
He is thin, dirty and disheveled, and wears an old torn
cloth sheet as clothing. The boy carries a large woven sack
and pulls out several coconuts and places them into a straw
basket on the dirt ground.

Hamadi raises his head, making a slight noise which startles
the boy. The boy jumps and looks at Hamadi frozen in fear.

                       HAMADI
Who are you?

The boy remains still.

                       HAMADI
What is your name?

From the entrance of the hut, a YOUNG GIRL, about twelve
years old, enters the room. She is equally as dirty and
unkempt as her brother. She looks at her brother then to
Hamadi.

                       GIRL
You woke up.

The young girl walks over to her brother, places a sack on
the ground and begins placing coconuts in the basket.

                       HAMADI
Where am I?

73.

                       GIRL
Nubia.

                       HAMADI
How did I get here?

                       GIRL
Our mother found you. She went to
the river to fetch water but there
was no water. Only you.

                       HAMADI
It is not a dream. The Nile river
is gone.

                       GIRL
It is no dream. The water has
disappeared from the earth.
Without water we all will die.

The girl holds up a coconut and shows it to Hamadi.

                       GIRL
Me and my brother have gathered
coconuts.

The girl pulls out a sharp ROCK, places the coconut on the
ground, and pounds it with the rock - she splits the coconut
down the middle. She cautiously walks over and hands one
half to Hamadi.

                       GIRL
Here. Eat.

Hamadi grabs the coconut half and devours it. The girl picks
another coconut to share with her brother.

                       HAMADI
Where is your mother?

The young boy and girl exchange melancholy glances.

                       GIRL
She is dead. She was killed by
three men who came to steal our
milk.

                       HAMADI
How long have I been alseep?

                       GIRL
Twelve days.

74.

Hamadi is shocked!

                       HAMADI
I must go. I must go now.

Hamadi sits up and tries to stand but the little girl rushes
over to him and grabs his hand.

                       GIRL
Do not go, please. Do not leave
us. It is dark and we are afraid.

Hamadi looks at the desperation in her eyes, then concedes.

                       HAMADI
I will stay the night. But I must
leave at sunrise.

The girl smiles then goes back beside her brother on the
floor to finish her coconut.

                       GIRL
Are you a desert spirit?

                       HAMADI
I am no spirit. I am just a boy
who ran away from home.

Hamadi looks down at the GOLD RING on his finger. He thinks
sadly to himself.

The young girl turns to her brother.

                       GIRL
Come, little brother. It is time
to sleep.

The brother and sister lay down on a large woven straw mat.
The young girl studies Hamadi.

                       GIRL
Tell us a story.

Hamadi thinks to himself...

                       HAMADI
I only know one. My mother used to
tell it when I was little.

The little girl and boy cuddle on the floor as Hamadi stares
at the flickering candle light and speaks in a soft voice.

75.

                       HAMADI
Once upon a time there was a chief
who had a beautiful daughter. She
was so beautiful that even the
Gods desired her. One day, Fire
and Rain appeared to marry her.
The chief wished his daughter to
marry Fire, but his daughter
wished to marry Rain.

"What shall we do?" cried the
chief. "My daughter cannot marry
both Fire and Rain."

Then Fire and Rain came to the
chief and his daughter. The chief
said to them.

"Tomorrow will be the day of my
daughter's marriage. To the winner
of a race, I will give my
daughter." And so Fire and Rain
agreed to the chief's plan.

On the day of the race many people
came to the town. They all wanted
to see the race. Some of them
said, "Fire will win." Others
said, "Rain will win."

Then the race began. Fire cheated
and asked the Wind to help him.
And so the Wind came and helped
Fire to run very quickly. But Rain
was not there. Nobody saw him.

The people cried. "Look, Fire is
near the finish!'"

But then Rain began to fall from
the sky and used the Wind to put
out Fire. So Fire could not finish
the race.

The people cried, "Rain, Rain has
won!"

So the chief gave his daughter to
Rain and they were very happy.

And from that day on Fire and Rain
were eternal enemies.

76.

Hamadi finishes his story and looks down to see the young
brother and sister fast asleep.

Hamadi smiles to himself, lays back down and closes his
eyes.

INT. GRASS HUT - MORNING

The candles inside the hut have burned out. The morning
light peaks through cracks in the grass walls.

PAN ACROSS the room to the young boy and girl still sleeping
soundly on their straw mat.

PAN CONTINUES to Hamadi, who stands at the entrance of the
hut looking down at the two children. After a moment, he
turns and walks out.

EXT. NUBIA - SMALL VILLAGE - CONTINUED - DAY

Hamadi walks out of the hut and looks around him.

HAMADI'S POV to a gathering of straw and mud huts scattered
around an open dirt field - most are badly damaged or
burned. The ground is dusty and dry, all plant life is dead
or dissolved into ash. Patches of broken clay pots, spoiled
vegetables and bread lay across the ground. Dead dogs and
cats are devoured by thousands of flies.

Only a few emaciated villagers walk the streets. They all
stare at Hamadi as he passes by.

Suddenly, an old man rushes to Hamadi and grabs violently at
him.

                       OLD MAN
Water! Water! Please, help me!

Hamadi shakes off the old man, pushes him to the ground and
raises his clenched fist ready to strike. The old man
cowers.

                       OLD MAN
      (continued)
Please, forgive me. The ground has
swallowed the river. The Gods are
angry. We are dying.

Hamadi lowers his hand and ponders the man's claim.

77.

                       HAMADI
There must be water some place.
Where is your chief? What has he
done for the people?

                       OLD MAN
The chief hides in his palace. He
will not share his supply.

                       HAMADI
I shall go to him. I will make him
do what is needed.

                       OLD MAN
Many have tried. None have
survived.

The old man points to a dirt path that leads out of the
village.

                       OLD MAN
The Chief lives beyond the walls
of the dead.

Hamadi gives the old man a sympathetic glance then heads
toward the path.

EXT. FIELD - CONTINUED

Hamadi walks along the dirt path and passes through another
barren dirt field with several small deserted grass huts.
Two young black-skinned boys drag the dead body of an
emaciated woman past him towards a wide pathway several
yards ahead.

EXT. CHIEF'S ESTATE - CONTINUED

Hamadi reaches a wide pathway and stops in his tracks! He
stares out in front of him and his eyes fill with horror.

Hamadi slowly walks down the pathway. On either side of him
are PILES OF DEAD BODIES stacked four feet tall. The piles
span the length of the pathway ending at a rotted wooden
fence that encloses a large mudbrick building. Thousands of
flies and rodents feast on the decomposing flesh.

HAMADI's POV to the two young men throwing the dead woman's
body on top of the pile... then to a weeping mother who
holds a lifeless child in her arms.

Hamadi continues down the path and passes three children
trying to salvage any remaining bounty from the walls of
corpses.

78.

A tear runs down Hamadi's cheek as he reaches the wooden
fence.

INT. CHIEF'S ESTATE - BEDROOM - DAY

A tall dark-skinned man kneels beside a small feather bed
where a young girl lays sleeping. She is extremely thin and
barely breathing.

The man weeps. BEHIND HIM, Hamadi enters the room.

                       HAMADI
Are you the master of this house?

The man is KAFELE. His skin is ashy, his mind exhausted, his
robes are faded and torn.

                       KAFELE
I am the Chief of this village.
But that does not matter now.
Leave us.

                       HAMADI
Your people suffer. They have no
food and no water.

                       KAFELE
Open your eyes. The Nile is gone.
There is nothing to do.

                       HAMADI
You must care for your people.
It is your duty. Your people are
dying...

Chief Kafele jumps up.

                       KAFELE
      (interrupting)
My family is dying you fool! Leave
or my guards will cut your throat.

Hamadi remains strong.

                       HAMADI
You will share what food and water
you have with your people. You
will do as I command.

                       KAFELE
Guards!

79.

Two Nubian guards rush into the room, each holding a large
copper dagger.

                       KAFELE
      (continued)
It is my food! My water! Who are
you to enter my home and demand
such things?

Hamadi raises his arm forward, his hand clenched in a fist.
On his ring finger his GOLDEN RING catches the light from
the nearby window opening.

                       HAMADI
I am Prince Hamadi, son of
Nebtawi, mighty ruler of Egypt and
commander of these lands. I bear
the ring of Amun Ra, and speak his
words. You will obey me!

The Chief hesitates then reluctantly kneels at Hamadi's
feet. The guards follow suit.

INT. CHAMBER - DAY

OUT OF THE DARKNESS, a large wooden door opens allowing
SUNLIGHT to blaze through the doorway.

A Nubian guard holding a lit torch enters the dark chamber.
Hamadi follows him and stops to look around.

HAMADI'S POV across the chamber packed with large clay pots
of decaying fruits and vegetables, and tall wooden barrels
of water, rice and grains.

EXT. CHIEF'S ESTATE - LATER

A large group of Nubian children gather in front of the
mudbrick chamber. Most are clothed in scraps of cloth,
others are naked.

Hamadi stands in front of the chamber's wooden door. Behind
him, several children carry out barrels, pots and bowls from
the Chief's chamber and place them on the ground - among the
children are the young SISTER AND BROTHER who sheltered
Hamadi the previous night. Hamadi addresses the children.

                       HAMADI
Children of Nubia, gather to me.
From this moment, I shall be your
master, and you shall be in my
service. You will share this food
            (MORE)

                       HAMADI (cont'd)
and water among your people. You
will eat first so you have the
strength for your task. Then you
must feed the elders. You must
work together. Your people need
you now.

As Hamadi speaks, INTERCUT:

A line of children scoop small bowls of rice out of a large
clay barrel... A little boy carries a small pot of grain and
a sack of vegetables to a grass hut where a mother stands
holding a baby in her arms... An old man near death from
dehydration lays on a mat as a small girl feeds him water
from a bowl... A group of children sit under a dead tree and
drink juice from cracked coconuts...

EXT. EGYPT - FARMLAND - DAY

The SUN glares down from the cloudless sky. HEAT WAVES
radiate through the air.

Acres upon acres of dead farmland are filled with spoiled
crops and dried up grains. Dead remains of humans and
animals lay emaciated among the terrain.

EXT. PYRAMID SITE - DAY

The construction site of the King's tomb is deserted. Tools,
wooden sleds and unfinished limestone blocks lay scattered
across the site.

CUT TO - NEARBY HILL

King Nebtawi stands alone on a hill overlooking the
abandoned construction site. He thinks sadly to himself.

Queen Naeemah slowly walks up behind him - she is visibly
shaken.

                       QUEEN NAEEMAH
So many of your people have died.
They have begun to eat the dead to
survive.

The King does not move. His spirit is broken.

                       QUEEN NAEEMAH
      (continued)
And still no word from Hamadi.

81.

                       KING NEBTAWI
Then it is over. I have failed as
a King, and as a father. I have
become the end if all things.

                       QUEEN NAEEMAH
Husband? We can not survive here.
We must leave these lands.

                       KING NEBTAWI
The earth is dead. Beyond our
borders, only desert. We have no
place to go.

The Queen tries to comfort her husband when something off in
the distance catches her eye. Queen Naeemah walks forward
for a better look. King Nebtawi joins her gaze across the
dried hills.

CUT TO - EASTERN HILL

An ARAB MAN dressed in an animal-skin tunic and keffiyeh
sits atop a black stallion. He stares back at the Egyptian
King and Queen... then then turns around and rides away.

FOLLOW the Arab man through a dry rocky terrain and out into
a vast dirt landscape. He slows his pace and proceeds
through a massive camp revealing a sea of TWENTY FIVE
THOUSAND ASSYRIAN WARRIORS resting, eating and sparring
amidst thousands of horses and hundreds of wooden wagons
carrying food, water and weapons.

The man rides through the camp and arrives at a LARGE WOODEN
TENT covered in red and black linen drapes. He dismounts his
horse and enters.

INT. TENT - CONTINUED

The man enters and kneels. On the ground in front of him is
PRINCE ARDASHIR who sits on a large woven mat dressed in a
long red cotton tunic and shawl. Four Assyrian warriors sit
beside him in private discussion. They all turn to the man.

(IN ARAMAIC - SUBTITLED)

                       MAN
Prince Ardashir! I have returned
from Egypt. The Nile river, it is
gone!

Prince Ardashir and his warriors exchange curious looks.

82.

                       PRINCE ARDASHIR
Explain.

                       MAN
The river, it... vanished. Egypt
has no water, its people starve
with hunger.

                       PRINCE ARDASHIR
Do not lie to me!

                       MAN
It is no lie. I have seen it. Your
enemy is weak, and has no river to
protect it.

The Prince contemplates and rises to his feet.

                       PRINCE ARDASHIR
The Gods have made their move, now
I shall make mine. I will finish
what my brother began. Egypt will
fall.

The man bows to the Prince and exits the tent.

EXT. EGYPT - DAY

FIVE THOUSAND Assyrian horsemen ride westward across the dry
African terrain towards the Egyptian capital city. Behind
them TWENTY THOUSAND foot soldiers march in massive legions.
Most carry long thick plaited reed shields, short wooden
spears and iron swords while others pull wagons of food and
water.

Prince Ardashir rides a bronze stallion amidst his troops
dressed in a black leather tunic.

EXT. NUBIA - DIRT YARD - NIGHT

The full moon illuminates the cloudless night sky. Hamadi
sits on the ground, deep in thought. He fondles the GOLD
RING on his finger.

A FALCON'S CRY is heard in the distance, getting louder as
it draws near. Hamadi looks up at the sky.

HAMADI'S POV to a falcon flying overhead. It glides for a
moment, then plunges down towards Hamadi.

83.

Hamadi ducks as the falcon grazes his head then ascends back
to the sky crossing the path of a man who stands several
yards from Hamadi. Hamadi looks at the man, and recognizes
him instantly!

(IN COPTIC - SUBTITLED)

                       HAMADI
Musim!? Is it you? How can it be?

Musim stands before him, stoic and weary - he appears
ghostly under the moonlight. He dismisses Hamadi's greeting.

                       MUSIM
That is not important. I have come
to speak of Egypt.

Hamadi tries to hold back tears.

                       HAMADI
I do not understand. You are dead.

                       MUSIM
You must listen Hamadi. The famine
has reached Egypt. Your people are
dying.

Hamadi ponders this news...

                       HAMADI
How do you know this?

                       MUSIM
I know because the Gods have made
it so. It is a curse.

                       HAMADI
My family? What of them?

                       MUSIM
Alive...

Musim slowly approaches Hamadi.

                       MUSIM
      (continued)
There is more. Egypt is under
attack. The Assyrians have reached
your homeland.

Hamadi tries to remain unaffected.

84.

                       HAMADI
I do not care. I am no longer
Egyptian. My blood belongs to
Nubia now.

                       MUSIM
You are the son of the King, and a
son of Egypt. You were born to
serve its people.

                       HAMADI
My father calls me his enemy. He
will not welcome me home. He will
not want my help.

                       MUSIM
Your duty is to your people, not
to your father.

Emotion overwhelms Hamadi.

                       HAMADI
How can I go back? How can I do
what is needed when all I feel is
pain?

                       MUSIM
That is a choice only a King can
make. Now you know your father's
burden. If you do not make the
choice, no one will.

Hamadi ponders Musim's words as he wipes a tear from his
cheek. He looks back down at his GOLDEN RING and runs his
finger across the engraving... then looks up and around the
yard. Musim is gone! The FALCON'S CRY is heard again. Hamadi
looks up to the sky.

HAMADI'S POV to the falcon flying away in the distance.

EXT. EGYPT - VALLEY - MORNING

Prince Ardashir rides atop his stallion, leading his
colossal force down a long slope and into a wide dirt
valley, once the home of the Nile river. The earth RUMBLES
as they advance towards Egypt.

EXT. NUBIA - DAY

Hamadi walks through an empty village of dilapidated straw
huts. He holds the reigns of a dreary-looking horse.

85.

Out of the emptiness, a ragged woman approaches Hamadi. She
grabs his hand and kisses it.

Seconds later, an elderly man walks up to Hamadi and kisses
his hand.

Suddenly, several Nubian villagers emerge and surround
Hamadi. They push and shove each other as they try to touch
him.

Amidst the crowd, the YOUNG BOY AND GIRL who sheltered
Hamadi approach him. The young girl carries an animal-skin
canteen. She hands it to Hamadi.

                       GIRL
Water. For your journey home.

                       HAMADI
This water belongs to you. You
must share it with each other.

                       GIRL
Take it. It is a gift from Nubia.
You have kept us alive. You must
be strong to survive the long
journey.

Hamadi takes the canteen. He mounts his horse and looks out
at the small crowd.

                       HAMADI
Brothers and sisters of Nubia. You
give so much even when you have so
little. I am eternally grateful.

Hamadi rides away. The Nubians watch him disappear.

Sons of Egypt. Once more the time
has come to give your lives for
your King. You are starved from

Ardashir's youth and quickness give him the advantage.

and throws him to the ground. The Prince raises his sword to
cut down the mighty Pharaoh of Egypt.

King Nebtawi reaches for a KNIFE on the ground just out of

neck...

FADE TO WHITE...

EXT. HILLSIDE - LATER

King Nebtawi, Timaeus, and Hamadi stand on a small dirt
mound. They look over a sea of surviving Egyptian and
Athenian soldiers, now integrated together.

King Nebtawi raises his hands in the air - only the Egyptian
soldiers kneel. The King shouts, his voice horse and tired.

                       KING NEBTAWI
Behold! We are victorious! The
might of Egypt and the bravery of
Greece have united to defeat our
enemy. Those who have died shall
be worshiped in the afterlife.

The King becomes emotional.

                       KING NEBTAWI
      (continued)
A true hero stands among us. A man
who faced great danger to save the
life of his King, his father... My
son Hamadi.

91.

Hamadi looks at his father in surprise. King Nebtawi extends
his hand and Hamadi slowly moves to stand beside him. King
Nebtawi places his hand on Hamadi's shoulder.

                       KING NEBTAWI
      (continued)
If not for the courage of Hamadi,
I would not have survived this
day. Also, tales of his honorable
deeds for the people of Nubia have
reached my ears. Prince Hamadi has
proven himself worthy to one day
wear the crown of Egypt. Join with
me to honor my son.

The Egyptian warriors stand and raise their weapons into the
air. They chant in unison.

                       WARRIORS
HA-MA-DI! HA-MA-DI! HA-MA-DI!

King Nebtawi watches the departing Athenians make their long
journey home.

Timaeus walks up next to him.

                       TIMAEUS
My friend, this land is dead.
Without water, you will not
survive. You must leave to fertile
land or die.

King Nebtawi bows his head in sadness. Timaeus places his
hands on his friend's shoulder.

                       TIMAEUS
      (continued)
I am sorry to see your people
suffer.

Timaeus leaves. He passes by Hamadi and gives him a pat on
the shoulder. Hamadi looks sadly at his father.

92.

INT. TEMPLE - DAY

Hamadi enters a quiet temple room. SUNLIGHT illuminates the
stone walls through a carved out hole over the entrance of
the temple.

Hamadi walks to the center of the temple revealing a FIFTY
FOOT TALL STONE STATUE with the body of a man and the head
of a crocodile standing at attention. The wall behind the
statue is covered in PAINTED HIEROGLYPHICS.

IN THE CORNER OF THE TEMPLE, two artisans dressed in white
shendyts busily paint fresh hieroglyph marks on an empty
space on the wall - one of the painters stands on a wooden
stool. They both stop painting and watch Hamadi as he walks
towards them.

                       HAMADI
Leave me.

The artisans obey and quickly drop their paint brushes - ONE
OF THEM PLACES HIS PAINT BRUSH ON THE EDGE OF THE WOODEN
STOOL. Both artists bow and exit out of the temple.

Hamadi kneels in front of the giant statue and bows his head
to the ground.

                       HAMADI
Sobek, God of the Nile. I come to
you on behalf of my people.

A PRIEST emerges from behind the statue dressed in a gold
cotton robe with a hood that covers his face. The priest
carries a small bowl of BURNING EMBERS in his hands.

The priest approaches Hamadi and holds the bowl under his
nose. Hamadi raises his head and inhales its fumes with a
giant breath. The priest backs away.

Hamadi exhales a thick CLOUD OF SMOKE. His face drops and
his pupils diolate as the sensation of euphoria takes over
his body.

A POWERFUL BOOMING VOICE echoes through the room.

                       SOBEK
Speak, prince of Egypt.

Hamadi looks up at the statue, his eyes heavy, intoxicated.

                       HAMADI
I come to beg for mercy. I ask you
to end this curse on my people.

93.

                       SOBEK
Your King has killed the high
priest of Egypt. That is a crime
against the Gods. Egypt must be
punished.

                       HAMADI
I come to ask for mercey. I ask
you to forgive my father. He is
just a man.

                       SOBEK
Such mercy is not without cost.
What shall be paid for this
forgiveness?

                       HAMADI
All that is within my power to
give. Egypt's gold and jewels
shall be yours. We shall build
great monuments to honor your
mercy.

                       SOBEK
The Gods have no need for rock and
stone. Only life can forgive the
sins of man.

                       HAMADI
I do not have power to give life.

                       SOBEK
You seek the truth but do not hear
the answer. You have the power to
give or take life.

                       HAMADI
I do not understand.

                       SOBEK
Look to your history. Only then
can you change the future. If it
is written, it becomes truth.

                       HAMADI
Please, I do not know what to do.

Hamadi waits for an answer, but none comes.

CUT TO - CORNER OF THE TEMPLE

The PAINT BRUSH on the edge of the artist's stool rolls off.
It falls to the ground with a loud CLANK.

94.

Hamadi jolts out of his trance. He stands up and walks to
the stool by the back wall. He picks up the paintbrush and
touches its bristles. He looks at his fingers now covered in
BLACK INK.

                       HAMADI
If it is written, it becomes
truth.

As the sun sets outside, the SUNLIGHT moves across the
temple through the carved-out opening above the entryway.
The sun's rays PAN ACROSS the painted hieroglyphs on the
wall.

Hamadi surveys the illuminated mural, contemplating. He
walks over to the BLANK space on the wall and gently grazes
his fingers across the surface.

INT. PALACE - ROOM - DAY

King Nebtawi stands over a large woven rug that covers half
the room. He grazes his bare feet across the soft hairs and
paces back and forth, head down, deep in thought.

FAVOR KING NEBTAWI as Hamadi walks into the room. He stops
at the entryway between two large stone pillars. He is
tired, and rests his hand on the pillar closest to him.

King Nebtawi does not look at his son.

                       KING NEBTAWI
My son. Have I been such a bad
father to you? Did I not love you
enough?

                       HAMADI
You are a good father, and a
mighty King.

                       KING NEBTAWI
Yet I have failed at both. Now I
shall live to see Egypt's end.

                       HAMADI
No. Egypt will not fall. I will
not let it be so. I will give my
life to save our people.

The King looks up at his son.

95.

                       KING NEBTAWI
Those are the words of a man, and
the words of a King.

King Nebtawi gazes back down at the giant rug and back to
his thoughts.

Hamadi watches his father and tries to hold back tears.

                       HAMADI
Goodbye father.

Hamadi turns away to leave. FAVOR THE STONE PILLAR when
Hamadi removes his hand revealing a BLACK INK HANDPRINT left
on the stone.

EXT. DRY SAVANNA - DAY

Hamadi walks over a large dirt hill. He stops for a moment
and looks behind him.

HAMADI'S POV to the desolate and quiet Egyptian city in the
distance.

Hamadi turns and continues over the hill.

The artisan rushes into a small room. He stops and bows.

King Nebtawi and Queen Naeemah tend to baby Ife who sleeps
soundly in a crib made of grass and straw.

                       MAN
My King! My Queen!

The King and Queen scowl at the artisan for shouting in the
presence of their sleeping daughter.

                       ARTIST
      (continued)
You must come with me!

follows the artisan out of the room.

96.

INT. TEMPLE - CONTINUED

The artisan quickly leads King Nebtawi into the temple, past
the giant stone statue of Sobek, to the back wall covered in
hieroglyphs.

The artisan guides King Nebtawi to the previously blank
section on the back wall. It is now covered in freshly
painted BLACK HIEROGLYPHIC MARKS, obviously drawn by a
novice with little skill.

King Nebtawi walks up to the wall and carefully examines the
markings.

                       KING NEBTAWI
Who did this?

                       ARTIST
Prince Hamadi was the last alone
in this place.

                       KING NEBTAWI
Where is he? Where is my son?

King Nebtawi races back towards the entrance, the artisan
follows closely behind him. When they reach the entryway,
they meet Queen Naeemah. She sees the panic in her husband's
eyes.

                       QUEEN NAEEMAH
Husband, what is it?

King Nebtawi rushes past the Queen without a word. The
artisan stops, points to the back wall, then quickly follows
his King.

Queen Naeemah looks over at the back wall and walks toward
it. When she reaches the wall she begins to read the newly
painted symbols.

transients who leap out of his way.

97.

Brothers and sisters. Today we do
not mourn a death, but celebrate a
great life. We gather here to
honor a man born of flesh, and
died a God of men. Prince Hamadi
gave his life so Egypt could
endure. The Gods had foreseen our
suffering and gave us a mighty
Prince to save us from death.
