A Neo-Noir set present day with Virgil Rittes and his associates (Bony Babs, Mouth, Anderson and Mitts) who run a Private Investigation Agency at their highschool. Their jobs require evidence of infidelity, news on the block, the know-all information of new drugs, etc... for anyone who requires their services. A new Job Detail is unexpectedly added to their list when their associate, Anderson, is found hanging in a tree. It's up to the crew to find our the whos, whats, wheres, whens, hows, and whys of this tragic ordeal... Little does Virgil know that upon doing so, he and his crew will be sucked into the underworld of crime, seduction, backstabbing, and the uncertainties that he vowed to never be involved in again. Filled with classical Noir Characters, dialogue, and outcome that any fan of Film Noir should appreciate. First draft. (I'm 21 years old. First draft completed when I was 18) I'm converting it from Final Draft to Scriptbuddy, so it will take me a while to rewrite every individual line. So it's considered WIP.

BLACK TITLE CARD

"par•a•digm - A set of assumptions, concepts, values, and
practices that constitutes a way of viewing reality for the
community that shares them, especially in an intellectual
discipline."

EXT. DIRT PATH - DAY

An elderly man is seen in the distance walking his dog
towards the camera. He smiles towards the sky, enjoying the
warm embrace of the sun's rays upon his face; filling his
lungs with crisp fresh air.
The dog runs ahead, hot on the trail of an unfamiliar scent.

                       OLD MAN
Elvis! Come here boy, where are
you going?

The man follows the dog off to the side covered with trees.

EXT. MEADOWS - DAY

                       OLD MAN
Elvis?

The Old Man walks up a small hill into an area surrounded by
beautiful green trees. The silence is that of death, hiding
in the winds. He searches for his pooch until something else
catches his eyes in the distance. He creeps to the object.
Elvis has beaten him to it, standing cautiously at the foot
of the tree. The old man reaches the grotto, where he sees a
lifeless body of a boy hanging... swaying from the tree.

INT. HIGH SCHOOL BATHROOM - DAY

CU OF HANDS SHUFFLING THROUGH PHOTOS OF A GIRL MAKING OUT
WITH A BOY.

The two love birds are at a park, lying down on a BLANKET on
the grass.

The teen who is looking at the PHOTOS is LOU. Lou becomes
very upset with this.

VIRGIL takes the PHOTOS from Lou and rips them up, tossing
them in a nearby TRASH CAN. Standing next to Lou is Virgil's
associate, BONY BABS.

                       VIRGIL
Lou, I'm sorry pal...

                       VIRGIL (cont'd)
I-I don't know what to say...

BEAT

                       LOU
      (Obviously upset;
       sad)
Of course you don't. You don't
know how this feels.

                       VIRGIL
I know. And trust me, this is the
hardest part of the job. Last
thing I want to do is ruin a mates
day...

                       LOU
She said she loved me. She said
she wants to be with me forever.
You don't say things of that
nature if you don't mean it. This
can't be...

                       BONY BABS
Ah, they're just words of
immaturity, Louie. You got years
ahead a' ya; this is one broad--

Virgil puts his hand up, hushing Babs, unbeknownst to Lou
who is still drooling over the PHOTOS.

3.

                       VIRGIL
Lou, baby, if you want I can get
Mitts to talk to the guy. He talks
with his fists. It'll be grand--

                       LOU
      (Cutting Virgil
       off)
What for? What will that do? Just
leave them... If this brings her
happiness, so be it. I'm not gonna
be that kinda shmuck.

Virgil puts his arm around Lou's shoulders.

                       VIRGIL
You know, Lou, you got a heart a'
gold. A girl like that don't
deserve a swell guy like you.
You'll make it out fine.

Lou smiles at him, wipes his eyes and reaches in his pocket.
He hands Virgil a TWENTY DOLLAR BILL. Virgil takes it and in
his pocket it goes.

                       VIRGIL (cont'd)
You know, I'm sure Isla knows a
few dames who are suckers for
fellas with gold hearts.

                       LOU
      (Attemping to
       compose himself)
Thanks, Virgil. I owe you one.

                       VIRGIL
You owe me zilch. Nothing. All i
want from you is to leave this
privy with a high head and high
hopes to match. Things'll get
better. I promise, pal.

With a melodramatic guff, Lou leaves in a teary smile.
Virgil looks back at Bony Babs, sighs while shaking his
head, and lights a LUCKY STRIKE CIGARETTE.

                       BONY BABS
The confines of school never stops
you, does it?

                       VIRGIL
You know, Babs, I don't ever think
I could get used to this.

4.

                       BONY BABS
Dames, partner, never trust 'em.

                       VIRGIL
It sure eases my mind that Isla is
faithful. Or at least I like to
ponder that.

                       BONY BABS
Sure she is.

                       VIRGIL
Yeah?

                       BONY BABS
Sure.

Virgil nods, puts his hat on, and they both exit.

INT. HIGH SCHOOL CLASSROOM - DAY

Virgil sits with Bony Babs, at a table aside from the rest
of the students. 'Chinatown' is playing on the T.V., but
most of the class talks ignoring this beautiful FILM.

                       BONY BABS
Look at these mugs, their mouths
flap, their eyes jitter, meanwhile
they are missing a classic.

                       VIRGIL
Only us Babs, only us.

                       CHEERLEADER 1 (O.S.)
Mrs. Hath, will you please turn on
something more appealing to our
times. I can't even follow this
movie.

                       MRS. HATH
Feel it out, honey.

                       BONY BABS
      (to Cheerleader #1)
Bet you've heard that quite a
bit... More ways than one.

                       CHEERLEADER 1
      (to Babs)
What was that 'freakazoid'?

5.

                       BONY BABS
      (to Cheerleader #1)
Keep up with me now... I am
calling you a brainless,
materialistic, oblivious whore.

                       SONNY (O.S.)
Don't go barking up the wrong tree
you can't reach, son.

In walks a tough fellow, looking for trouble. Babs stands up
to meet SONNY 's eyes.

                       BONY BABS
Maybe I should look for some
squirrels on YOUR branches, what
da' ya' say?

                       SONNY
You? Me? Great joke, son. One move
from you, and I'll snap you like
the twig you are.

Virgil stands up in front of Babs, who unfortunately would
lose this battle by himself.

                       VIRGIL
Pick on someone your own size,
Sonny. Or do you like to pick the
smallest fruit from the tree?
(to Babs)
No offense.

                       BONY BABS
None taken.

                       SONNY
Well, well. Virgil.

                       VIRGIL
How's life treating you Sonny?
Poorly, I hope.

                       SONNY
      (Implying Virgil)
Got a cold I can't seem to shake,
other than that, pretty good.

                       VIRGIL
Them summer colds are the worst.
Maybe you should disappear for a
while. You know, until the cold
succumbs.

6.

                       SONNY
Amusing. Look, just tell your lap
dog to close that trap of his.
Might get him hurt one a' these
days.

                       BONY BABS
      (Mocking, as if a
       Dog)
Arf, Arf!

Virgil smiles at Babs.

                       VIRGIL
      (Looking back at
       Babs)
Can't promise you that, Sonny.
What do you want me ta' do? Kid's
got a mind of his own.

                       MITTS (O.S.)
We got a problem here, Virgil?

Virgil looks back to see his partner MITTS (A big burly
student) with his giant arms crossed. Next to him is MOUTH
(Glasses, 5'7", average build).

                       VIRGIL
I dunno, Mitts...
(to Sonny)
Do we?

Sonny smiles nonchalantly.

                       SONNY
      (looking at Mitts)
Guess we don't.

                       VIRGIL
      (to Mitts)
Guess we don't... (greeting)
Mouth.

Mouth nods 'Hello'.

                       MRS. HATH
Sonny, go to your next class. I
don't want to start my three day
weekend filling out detentions.

Out walks Sonny. The four associates sit down at the TABLE.

7.

                       MOUTH
Alright boys, you heard of the
happy Roman? He was
GLAD-HE-ATE-HER (Gladiator).

The crew laughs.

                       MOUTH (cont'd)
How's today, then? You show Louie
what we found?

                       VIRGIL
Yeah. Poor kid was devestated.

                       MOUTH
Virgil, Jerry called me last night
wondering if you had a chance to
do that thing he asked you.

Virgil extracts his small NOTEPAD from his pocket and flips
through it.

                       VIRGIL
Jerry...Jerry...Jerry. Oh, 'bout
the new happy powder comin' in?
Nah, haven't had the chance. Give
him word that I'll keep my specs
peeled for where Big Man will be
that night. I don't want any ties
back to me though. What he does to
Big Man is his business. In fact,
double the price. I ain't stickin'
my neck out, spying on this guy
for our going-rate.

                       MOUTH
You got it. Hey, any of you heard
from Anderson? He was supposed to
meet me last night at Panic Park
to recon on the Maria case.

                       VIRGIL
He wasn't with you?

                       MOUTH
      (shaking his head)
Never showed.

                       BONY BABS
That ain't like 'im.
(Sarcastically)
Maybe he's dead! *Duh duh duuhh*

8.

                       VIRGIL
Hm.

At that moment, the intercom comes on and calls the four
associates to the principal's office.

The four exchange curious glances.

INT. PRINCIPAL DIXON'S OFFICE - DAY

                       PRINCIPAL DIXON
So, none of you have seen Anderson
since yesterday?

The crew shake their heads.

                       MOUTH
Well, he was supposed to meet with
me last night, but never showed.

                       PRINCIPAL DIXON
So approximately, around what time
did you last see him? Afternoon?

                       MOUTH
      (nods)
Sounds about right. What's this
all about, Dixon?

                       PRINCIPAL DIXON
Listen boys, there is no easy way
to say this. I know you four were
his closest yeggs...

Dixon takes a deep breath.

                       PRINCIPAL DIXON
Anderson was found early this
morning. He had a rope around his
neck... hanging from a tree in the
Meadows off of Turnpock drive.

Silence crowds the room.

                       PRINCIPAL DIXON (cont'd)
I know this is hard to take in
boys, but--

9.

                       VIRGIL
--Wait.. What? What do you mean?
He killed himself?

                       PRINCIPAL DIXON
It is not a certainty, but a
definite possibility. The police
will give word once their
investigation is complete.

                       MOUTH
You mean they are there right now?

                       PRINCIPAL DIXON
I believe so. I want you boys to
keep this matter hushed until we
know what happened. The last thing
we need, or Anderson's family
needs, is a gossip wave going
around school.

                       VIRGIL
      (glumly)
Anderson didn't have any family.
He moved around often. Slept where
ever he could.

                       PRINCIPAL DIXON
Well then, please, for my sake;
Hush... And I don't want your
fingers in the cookie jar, dig?

don't believe this. I don't--

                       VIRGIL
--Don't. Anderson was not the kind
of crowd to kill himself. All I
know is the poor kid loved life,
and someone didn't love him.

                       MOUTH
What are you suggesting, Virgil?

10.

                       VIRGIL
I don't know, Mouth. But I'll be
damned to find out. Babs, Mitts,
go back to class. Cover for me if
Hath gets nosey. Tell her my tummy
hurt and went to the nurse's.
Mouth, didn't Anderson have a
girl?

                       MOUTH
Yeah. Yeah, I think so.

                       VIRGIL
      (beginning to walk
       away)
Good. Find out anything about
everything you can on her. You're
good at that. See if she was with
him last night. She'd be the one
to know, right?

Virgil takes out a LUCKY and lights it... Yes, at school.

                       MOUTH
Right. And you?

                       VIRGIL
I'm gonna dig around in the dirt
and see what the bulls have to say
about all this.

The group splits up. Virgil turns around to say:

AREA TAPED OFF WITH YELLOW TAPE.

No fuzz?

He continues to search around the Meadows to eventually find
a broken branch from a tree. He bends down to look at it,
and places it back down. Looking at his fingers, he notices
blood on his fingers. He flips the branch back over and it
has a smear of blood on it. Virgil takes out his small NOTE
PAD and begins taking notes.

He continues to snoop and looks behind the tree that
tragically took Anderson's life. He looks on the ground and
finds a conspicuously looking trail of leaves leading about
15 yards away from the crime scene. One by one he begins
carefully uncovering the leaves and notices a longs path of
disturbed dirt; as if someone was dragged. He soon follows
the trail only to hear a pair of voices inching closer and
closer to his position. Virgil runs and hides.

                       DET. PRESLEY (O.S.)
      (voices grow

Sure is a shame, eh, Cash?

                       DET. CASH
Indeed it is. Kid had his whole
life ahead of 'im. And then this?

                       DET. PRESLEY
That just goes to show you how
sick some a' these kids are
nowadays. You ever even heard of--
what was it? Auto-rot--

                       DET. CASH
Auto-erotic asphyxiation.

                       DET. PRESLEY
Bingo.

                       DET. CASH
Yeah, Presley, I have. It's a
natural euphoric high kids get
when they choke themselves while
chokin' their chicken. The object
is asphyxiation, as in, to apply
pressure to restrict oxygen and/or
blood flow to the brain of the
victim therefore creating a
desired 'floaty',
'tingling','high' sensation. The
'high' is the cells of the brain
seizing and beginning the process
of permanent cell death. When the
victim becomes unconscious, the
pressure is released and the
secondary 'high' of the oxygen and

                       DET. CASH (cont'd)
blood rushing to the brain is
achieved. If the victim is alone -
which seems evident in this case -
upon unconsciousness there is no
one to release the pressure and
the victims' own body weight
continues to tighten the ligature,
most likely always resulting in
death.

                       DET. PRESLEY
Wow, no need for an encyclopedia,
I suppose. No autopsy?

                       DET. CASH
You breaking balls? No need. The
kid had his shirt and shoes off,
pants down, and a dog leash around
his neck. Accidental suicide. Case
closed.

                       DET. PRESLEY
What should I do with the blues?

                       DET. CASH
What are they doing right now?

                       DET. PRESLEY
Probably standing around the
perimeter with their thumbs up
their asses waiting for orders.
I'm gonna send some home. Keep a
few on so we don't have any
weirdos wondering in here.

                       DET. CASH
Sounds good... I'm hungry. Let's
go get a sandwich.

Detective Presley nods in agreement -- EXIT.

Virgil is seen writing in his NOTE PAD. He leaves as well.

INT. PHONE BOOTH - DAY

Virgil?

                       VIRGIL
Yeah, listen--

                       MOUTH (O.S.)
--Where are you calling me from?

                       VIRGIL
What? Oh. Pay phone. Nevermind
that. Listen, I heard some jive
from the bulls. Some shit is going
down. Get Babs and Mitts and meet
me at the 'Office'. You get ahold
of that dame?

                       MOUTH (O.S.)
Yeah-- No... about that...

                       VIRGIL
Forget it, tell me in person. Act
now.

Virgil hangs up, and exits frame.

                                         CUT TO:

INT. THE OFFICE - DAY

Virgil walks in to see his three associates sitting in their
necessary positions.

                       BONY BABS
Virgil--

                       VIRGIL
--Don't speak, let me talk.

                       BONY BABS
But--

14.

                       VIRGIL
--Babs, just hear me out.

Bony Babs shrugs and lays off.

                       VIRGIL
I just came back from the Meadows.
Something was off from the get-go.
The place was taped off, not a
bull in sight. Wouldn't they be
sweeping the place clean?

                       BONY BABS
Virgil, listen--

                       VIRGIL
--Babs, I'm not gonna tell you
again, just wait. I'm trying to
say here, that it seems like the
cops have already come to a
conclusion on the matter.

Virgil takes out his NOTEPAD.

                       VIRGIL (cont'd)
Auto-erotic asphyxiation. You guys
ever heard of it? Anderson had his
shoes and shirt off, and pants
down. The coppers claim it was an
accidental suicide, but I found
some blood on the bottom of the
tree from where he was hanging. I
never heard of someone leak from
asphyxiation.

A toilet flushes in the Office Bathroom. Virgil looks up at
his friends with a curious look. Out walks Dixon, wiping his
hands. Babs shakes his head at Virgil. Virgil is looking at
Dixon.

                       PRINCIPAL DIXON
Virgil. I couldn't help over hear
your discussion. I can't say I'm
too please to hear you ditching
school--

                       VIRGIL
Dixon--

                       PRINCIPAL DIXON
--Ah, ah, ah. I'm only going to
say this once... leave this to the
police, Virgil. I know Anderson
was your friend, but I'm sure the
            (MORE)

15.

                       PRINCIPAL DIXON (cont'd)
cops know what they are doing. Let
them do their job, and you do
yours--

                       VIRGIL
I am doing my job, Dixon. There is
another side to this story, and I
want to know what it is.

                       PRINCIPAL DIXON
Virgil...you're a bright young
fella'. Use that noggin of yours
and keep to yourself. Since you
were gone for the rest of the day
and missed my announcement, I
thought I'd come here in person to
let you know that there will be a
small funeral service for Anderson
tomorrow starting at 11:00. His
grandmother, God bless her heart,
is the only one he had. I suggest
you go and pay your respects. Pull
another stunt like you did today,
and I'll suspend you and shut your
whole operation down faster than a
rabbit gets fucked, you
understand?

Virgil is silent, refusing to agree to these terms.

Principal Dixon Exits. Virgil looks at everyone.

                       VIRGIL
Why didn't anyone say--

                       BONY BABS
Virgil, DON'T even start.

                       VIRGIL
Anyway, I found some blood on the
tree. I took a look behind it and
found a trail of impaled dirt,
covered up by leaves.

                       BONY BABS
Meaning what?

                       VIRGIL
He was possibly dragged to his
final resting place.

16.

                       MOUTH
Jesus. So 'they' did him in
somewhere else?

                       VIRGIL
it's a possibility. I heard these
two detectives talking. They're
closing the case. Accidental. No
autopsy.

                       MOUTH
What? Without the autopsy, the
whole town is going to look at
Anderson like another horny
teenager.

                       VIRGIL
Paradigm...

                       MITTS
Why so quick to put him under?

                       VIRGIL
Get rid of the evidence? I don't
know.

                       MOUTH
Well, he was part Muslim. It's
part of their religion to bury the
dead within twenty-four hours.

                       VIRGIL
Either way, I have a feeling this
goes deeper than anything we've
dealt with.

                       BONY BABS
But the puzzle's not done, Virgil.
Few pieces missing.

                       VIRGIL
Even if Anderson was experimenting
with that, is it logical for him
to go in the Meadows at night to
pleasure himself? No teen in their
right mind would.

                       BONY BABS
      (dazed; looking to
       the floor)
The Meadows are terrifying at
night, I don't care who you are.

17.

                       VIRGIL
He was supposed to meet you at
night, Mouth?

                       MOUTH
Right. All signs are pointing to a
murder. Who would want to waste
Anderson though? The kid was an
angel. Quiet... Kept to himself...

                       VIRGIL
I don't know. But them 'blue-boys'
ain't gonna help one cent. This is
the real deal guys. Mouth, call
Jerry and the crowd, postpone all
of our deals 'til further notice.
Did you talk to the broad?

                       MOUTH
Barely. Her teen-queens fended me
off before I could get a straight
answer let alone get a straight
query in.

                       VIRGIL
      (rubbing his eyes)
It's alright. If you boys'll
excuse me, I've got knives in my
eyes.

                                         CUT TO:

EXT. CEMETERY - DAY

About ten people (including a PRIEST) are present at
Anderson's funeral, all dressed in black, including the
Grandmother. All their heads are down except an attractive
girl in RED who is looking directly at Virgil.

                       PRIEST
..."O Death, where is your sting?
Hades, where is your victory?"
But thanks be to God, who gives us
the victory through our Lord Jesus
Christ. This day we commit his
body to the ground, "looking for
the blessed hope and glorious
appearing of our great God and
Savior Jesus Christ, who will
transform our lowly body that it
may be conformed to His glorious
body.

18.

Virgil soon notices THE WOMAN IN RED's gaze. He exchanges
eye contact.

                       PRIEST (cont'd)
May the Lord bless you and keep
you: the Lord make his face shine
upon you: and be gracious to you:
the Lord lift up His countenance
upon you and give you peace. Amen.

                       ALL
Amen.

                                         CUT TO:

EXT. CEMETERY - PARKING AREA - DAY

Virgil is having a cigarette under a tree when Mouth him
with his head down; hands in his POCKETS.

                       MOUTH
Well this is depressing...

BEAT

                       MOUTH (cont'd)
You alright?

                       VIRGIL
Yeah. Yeah, I'll be fine. Couldn't
help but notice a Catholic priest
present. I thought you said he was
Muslim?

                       MOUTH
Yeah, well, his grandmother's
Catholic.

Bony Babs and Mitts join them as well.

                       BONY BABS
So...

BEAT

                       BONY BABS (cont'd)
What now?

                       VIRGIL
Wish I knew. I don't know where to
start. This thing is bigger than
us.

19.

                       BONY BABS
My heart tells me he wasn't fond
of pleasuring himself in that way.
He's got a dame for Christ's sake.
You think he is a suicide? I mean,
he did always love the Meadows.
Especially that one tree,
remember? It was his place of
sanctuary.

                       MOUTH
Have you taken leave of your
senses? Don't be ridiculous.

                       VIRGIL
Someone HAD to have been with
Anderson last night. Can you do
what you do best, Mouth?

BEAT

                       MOUTH
I'll see what I can do.

Virgil looks at Mitts, and tosses his CIGARETTE on the
ground.

                       VIRGIL
Just watch my back, Mitts. Watch
it like a cat on a mouse.

                       MITTS
You got it. I'll phone you later.

Mitts Exits. Virgil looks down at his dying CIGARETTE not
realizing he was in a cemetery, picks it up and throws it on
the street. A GORGEOUS GIRL walks up and gives Virgil a kiss
on the lips.

                       VIRGIL
Hey, love boat.

                       GORGEOUS GIRL
Hey, Captain.

                       BONY BABS
      (greeting the girl)
Isla.

                       ISLA
      (to Babs)
Babsy, where you been eatin'
lunch?

20.

                       BONY BABS
Oh, around.

                       ISLA
      (smiling)
Doesn't look like it; your name
suites you well.

Babs smiles.

                       BONY BABS
Not lookin' so bad yourself. I'll
leave you two to your thoughts.
See you kids around.

Exit Babs.

Isla hugs and kisses Virgil passionately as if it's been
years.

                       ISLA
How's my boy doing?

BEAT

                       ISLA (cont'd)
How you holdin' up?

Virgil shrugs, obviously with other things on his mind.

                       ISLA (cont'd)
You feelin' alright?

                       VIRGIL
Tense...

Isla pulls out a BLACK LEATHER FLASK from her purse. Virgil
smiles and opens the top.

                       VIRGIL (cont'd)
What's in it?

                       ISLA
Your favorite.

                       VIRGIL
Oh yeah? If it was my favorite,
then you'd be in here.

She smiles her beautiful smile.

                       VIRGIL (cont'd)
Here's looking at you, kid.

21.

Down the hatch.

                       ISLA
Now, how do you feel?

                       VIRGIL
Better doll face, thank you.

Virgil puts the FLASK in his INNER JACKET POCKET and they
begin to walk to Virgil's car.

Holding hands:

                       ISLA
I haven't seen you for a while. I
was starting to think you skipped
town.

                       VIRGIL
And leaving you behind? Not in
this lifetime.

                       ISLA
I hope not.

Virgil stops her and pulls her in close.

                       VIRGIL
      (in almost a
       whisper)
Your the only thing keeping my
life together. I never want to
lose you.

Another passionate kiss is exchanged and continue to walk.

                       VIRGIL (cont'd)
How 'bout some coffee? I'll buy.

                       ISLA
So tempting, big spender.

Virgil opens the door for Isla and walks around to his door.
He notices a folded piece of paper under his windshield
wiper. He looks around cautiously and unfolds it. The paper
reads:

"RIP ANDERSON ANTHONY --
GRIEVANCE PARTY FOR ANDERSON TODAY AT 6:00 P.M. DRINKS,
FOOD, MUSIC, AND REMEMBRANCE OF OUR DEAR FRIEND. LET US
REMEMBER THE KIND SOUL HE WAS."

2231 ALEXANDRIA WAY #4434"

22.

Virgil looks around one more time and notices a conspicuous
white van with tinted windows slowly passing by him. He
makes a mental note, and shrugs it off. He enters his
vehicle.

                                         CUT TO:

EXT. STREET SIGN -- "ALEXANDRIA WAY" - NIGHT

CU OF STREET SIGN READING 'ALEXANDRIA WAY'.

EXT. HOUSE - NIGHT

                                         CUT TO:

FADE OUT.
