INT. THE LOTTEN HOUSE/ LIVING ROOM - DAY

SUPERIMPOSE: "NOVEMBER 1982 - CHICAGO"

The dark venetian blinds cloaks much of the room in
darkness, but sunlight from the kitchen is able to unmask
the most important details from that room. The room looks
like a blast from the past, possessing 70s-styled furniture.

EDDIE LOTTEN, a scrawny middle-aged man, stands in front of
a mirror and a cabinet. Atop the cabinet drowns a cluster of
his personal items (cologne, deodorant, a set of combs,
etc.). Like a model preparing for a photo shoot, he makes
sure his appearance is entirely perfect before heading to
work. He dusts off his shoulders, carefully combs his hair,
making sure no strand of hair is sticking out, straightens
his tie, and sprays cologne over his body. Drunk, he
occasionally drifts his eyes off the mirror to look back at
his teenage daughter, SARAH LOTTEN, who stands silently in
the corner. Sarah is an overweight, shy insecure girl whose
appearance negatively isolates her from kids at school.
Orange wired hair, she's a seventh grader.

Eddie finishes combing his hair and turns to Sarah.

                       EDDIE
Sarah, where are my keys?

He sees her eyes widen as she quickly departs the living
room. She returns briefly with a set of keys in her hands
and hands it to him.

                       EDDIE
What's that on your face?

                       SARAH
Nothing.

                       EDDIE
What is that, Sarah? Is that
lipstick?

                       SARAH
D-dad, I'm sorry. It's just a
little. I swear, I'll take it off.

                       EDDIE
You better. Told you this
before... I don't want any makeup
on my daughter. Will make you look
like a dirty tramp, you hear me?

2.

He rubs her arms slowly. Sarah slowly retreats, clearly not
liking it.

                       SARAH
Dad. I'm sorry.

                       EDDIE
Good. You wipe that off before you
leave this house, you hear?

He heads to the front door, picking up a suitcase from the
floor. He looks back at her.

                       EDDIE
Before I come home today, I want
this house cleaned. It looks like
a goddamn pigsty in here. People
will start thinking we live in a
rat hole if this house continues
to look like shit.

He exits the door. Sarah runs to the window and sees him
start his car and drive away. Grinning, exposing green
braces, she takes out lip gloss from her pocket and applies
it over her lips. We see her SPRINT out of the room and hear
her CLIMB stairs.

INT. SARAH'S ROOM

Sarah appears into the room and obtains a folded paper on
her dresser. The paper is a love poem expressing her love
toward her crush in school, SEBASTIAN COLEHAM. She opens the
paper and recites the poem, repeating the process again and
again, ENTHRALLED that she will read it in front of
everybody (and Sebastian) in her English class today. She
hopes that with this poem, her crush will finally be able to
notice her.

BEGIN FLASHBACK:

INT. BLAKE JR. HIGH/ MAIN HALLWAY - DAY

Sarah and her friend BEVERLY RESCOT tread to their lockers.
While doing so, kids move away from them as if they're
contagious. Several kids call malicious names to Sarah as
she walks. One boy throws a ball of paper at the back of her
head, another almost trips her, but Sarah ignores all of
this and reaches her locker. (None of this is any new to
her). The teasing stops. Sarah opens her locker and attains
the appropriate books for her next class; Beverly does the
same. Sarah sees the popular crowd at the front of the hall

erupting with laughter and smiles. She stares at them for a
long moment.

                       BEVERLY
Gazing at them AGAIN? I swear, I
don't know what you see in
them...just a bunch of conceited
morons with nothing better else to
do if you ask me.

Sarah continues to stare; Beverly rolls her eyes and shuts
her locker.

                       BEVERLY
But I'd say...if there was ever
one good thing to be in there,
it's that guy Jason. He is
attractive and I wouldn't mind
being his girlfriend Daisy for a
day.

Sarah turns to her in curiosity.

                       SARAH
Can you imagine what it's like to
be with them? I wonder what they
do up in Canyon Hill?

                       BEVERLY
What else? Kiss with their
boyfriends and girlfriends up
there.

A GIRL with red-licorice hair (who's been eavesdropping on
their conversation) comes up to them.

                       GIRL
Hell yeah they do! I've heard they
do tongue also. Daisy's one lucky
girl to be with Jason. I would
lick him up like ice cream if I
had the chance.

She smiles and laughs before departing. Beverly turns to
Sarah, shocked.

                       BEVERLY
Gross.

Suddenly, something catches Sarah's attention. She is
shocked to witness the hall saturated in a wave of silence
as every girl in the hall darts their eyes to a far-away
figure strolling near the bathrooms. Materializing out of

4.

sunlight, with blond, spiky hair and dreamy blue eyes, a BOY
stares mysteriously to all those who gaze at him. Girls
instantly blush at him; some have their mouths dropped open.
Before departing, he locks eyes with Sarah, causing her to
blush.

                       BEVERLY
Looks like someone's just plunged
into the sea of loooove.

                       SARAH
Who is he?

                       BEVERLY
No idea. Probably a new kid.

INT. BLAKE JR. HIGH/ CAFETERIA - DAY

The cafeteria is buzzing with noise (kids are joining
tables, chatting among friends, eating today's menu, chicken
needle soup, broccoli, and flavored milk). Sarah sits alone
at the far end of the room, waiting for Beverly's arrival.
As she waits, she doesn't bother to eat anything on her
plate and gets up. She heads to the girl's bathroom (also
located at the far end of the cafeteria).

INT. GIRLS RESTROOM

She treads to one of the sinks and washes her hands. An
EIGHT-GRADE GIRL appears next to her and rinses her own
hands. From the corner of her eyes, Sarah sees that the girl
is staring at her. Uncomfortable, Sarah turns to her.

                       EIGTH-GRADE GIRL
Lesbo. I know why you're in here.
Checking out the girls, huh?

She grins malevolently at her. Sarah immediately treads to
the door.

INT. CAFETERIA

As soon as Sarah exits the bathroom door, she sees a group
of bullies encircling her table, and the boy she saw weeks
earlier in the hall. Mouth opened, wondering what they're
doing at her table, she sees the LEAD BULLY bickering with
the boy. She treads up to them, and the boy is the first to
notice her.

5.

                       LEAD BULLY
      (to the boy)
Oh look. Mr. Nice Guy protecting
his girlfriend here.

He grins coldly at him, looking obviously satisfied with
himself.

                       LEAD BULLY
I feel sorry for you if she IS
your girlfriend.

                       BOY
Get out of here, and shove
whatever you were planning to do
up your ass. Apologize to her and
leave.

The boy turns his gaze to Sarah.

                       BOY
They were gonna do this to you. I
saw them put it in when you left.

He darts his eyes toward her soup, and Sarah follows it,
seeing a dead baby bird ascending to the surface of the
soup. She retreats in fear, trembling.

                       LEAD BULLY
      (to the boy)
Rat.

                       BOY
Yeah, I am. What you gonna do
'bout it?

The lead bully's hand clenches, but it loosens once he sees
a teacher nearby. The bullies emit one last look of hate at
them before leaving.

                       SARAH
Thank you.

                       BOY
No problem. I don't think those
knuckleheads will bother you
anymore. I'm Sebastian by the way.

He stretches out a hand to her; she shakes it.

                       SARAH
I'm Sarah, Sarah Lotten

6.

END OF FLASHBACK.

INT. BLAKE JR. HIGH/ ENGLISH CLASS - DAY

Standing in front of everybody, the poem about Sebastian in
her hand, Sarah slightly trembles. Occasional giggles come
from the back of the class, but Sarah doesn't get mad at
this. Instead, she gazes at Sebastian sitting in the middle
of the class, and a broad smile consumes her face.

                       SARAH
      (reading)
"The boy of my dreams, the one who
possesses the key to my heart. Is
fate calling upon us, craving for
us to be together? Is it a message
carved by the Heavens? He has a
voice like no other..."

Laughter blares everywhere.

INT. BLAKE JR. HIGH/ SCIENCE CLASS - DAY

Kids are in groups doing projects about the solar system.
Desks are drowned with glue sticks, scissors, pieces of
scrap paper, and colored pencils, and conversations are
swirling everywhere. In the back of the room, Sarah sits by
herself, head down, consumed in her project which is almost
done. Hearing a familiar voice, she looks up and is stunned
to see Sebastian staring at her.

                       SEBASTIAN
Hope I didn't scare you.

                       SARAH
N-no.

                       SEBASTIAN
How's the project going?

                       SARAH
Good.

Her hands trembles as she strives to focus on the project
and not his face.

                       SEBASTIAN
You know there's this dance this
Saturday at school...

Her heart races.

7.

                       SEBASTIAN (cont'd)
I was wondering if you didn't have
any plans that day...you could go
with me?

                       SARAH
      (intense voice)
What did you say?

                       SEBASTIAN
      (grinning)
Go to the dance with me,
beautiful.

                       SARAH
Oh my God...I would love to go
with you, Sebastian.

INT. BLAKE JR. HIGH GYM - NIGHT

The Dance is filled with popular 80s music, neon lights,
shouts and laughter as kids are enjoying one of the best
nights of their lives. Couples and groups dance in the
center of the gym, energized by the music. In the front of
the gym, we see Sarah and Sebastian smiling and laughing,
engaging in a conversation about a childhood memory. The
night's been going perfect for Sarah. A slow song plays and
they dance closely together. Halfway through the song,
Sebastian leaves a small kiss on her cheek.

INT. BLAKE JR. HIGH/ MAIN HALLWAY - DAY

Strolling down the hall, dressed in a pale blue dress, Sarah
darts her eyes everywhere. She waves excitedly at Sebastian
when she sees him associating with a group of five boys (all
handsome and wearing some facial hair) near the end of the
hall. Racing up to Sebastian, she blushes.

                       SARAH
Hi, Sebastian! Umm, I had a great
time Saturday.

He half-grins at her and faces the group again, spilling out
a conversation about cars. But Sarah doesn't cease beaming.

                       SARAH
I got you something. I was
wondering if we can go see a movie
tonight.

8.

                       SEBASTIAN
Come on...with you again? Wasn't
Saturday bad enough?

                       SARAH
      (suddenly quiet)
What are you talking about?

                       BOY # 1
Sebastian, I'll bet you another
twenty if you go out with her
again.

He draws out a twenty dollar bill from his wallet and
presents it to him.

Tears inundate Sarah's eyes. Nearby kids transfer their
attention to her.

                       BOY # 2
      (to Sebastian)
Ha ha. And she believed you too! I
didn't think she would've earned
your trust. Looks like I was
wrong.

                       SARAH
      (to Sebastian)
Please tell me you didn't. Please
tell me you didn't...

                       SEBASTIAN
Leave. You're not welcomed here.

                       SARAH
I loved you, Sebastian. H-how, how
could you do this to me? Y-you
broke my heart.

Sebastian reaches into the locker in back of him and pulls
out a bowl of red liquid. He splashes the liquid at her face
and Sarah collapses to the ground, crying. She looks down
and sees the same dead baby bird she saw in the cafeteria
weeks ago. Laughter pierces the air.

                       BOY # 1
      (to Sebastian)
Good one.

Sebastian stares down at her, sneering.

9.

                       SEBASTIAN
I mean, come on, Sarah? You didn't
think I would actually ask you out
for nothing, did you?"

Sarah stays quiet, trembling.

                       SEBASTIAN (cont'd)
      (sarcastically)
Hey, but put it on the bright
side...at least you got to be seen
with me that night.

INT. BLAKE JR. HIGH/ MAIN HALLWAY - DAY

SUPERIMPOSE: "1983"

Now an eighth grader, Sarah has long forgotten her past with
Sebastian, and no longer feels anything for him. Sebastian,
having once been popular at the school, is now a bully and
picks on Sarah on a regular basis. Not much significant
difference has been established on Sarah's appearance,
except she's a little taller.

Getting ready for P.E., Sarah opens her locker and hears
Sebastian nearby. She darts around and sees him poking a
kid's back with a pencil. The kid implores him to stop, but
he persists. Without warning, she locks eyes with Sebastian.
She freezes.

                       SEBASTIAN
      (to Sarah)
Hey, Fatso, why don't you mind
your own business?

She quickly closes her locker and departs.

THE FOLLOWING OCCURS IN A DAY, WITH TIME IN ORDER:

INT. THE LOTTEN HOUSE/ LIVING ROOM - DAY

Scorching hot day. After hours of cleaning, Sarah finishes
vacuuming the carpet. She turns off the machine and obtains
a glass of water from a nearby table. Gulping it down, she
sways her hand over her face, but is unsatisfied.

INT. ICE CREAM PARLOR - DAY

It's the afternoon. Sarah walks up to the retailer, a young
man in his twenties, and orders a strawberry ice cream cone,

10.

hoping this will finally cool her from the heat outside. He
hands her the ice cream cone and she exits the store.

EXT. WALTZ STREET - DAY

Treading home from the parlor, she reaches Waltz, a
typically active neighborhood inundated with beautiful homes
and lawns. But today, the street is isolated and saturated
with silence. Pale clouds drift over the street and Fall
leaves swirl everywhere. A hedge obstructs her from viewing
her teacher's Mrs. Dane's house and the rest of the homes on
the right side of the street. Halfway down Waltz, she
abruptly pauses when she hears suspicious noises coming from
hedge. She draws closer to the hedge, hearing Sebastian and
his friends on the other side. She finds a narrow slot in
the bushes and peeks.

Standing on the lawn, along with his friends JAMES and
KIRK, Sebastian darts his eyes on the house, glaring.

                       SEBASTIAN
      (still staring at
       the house)
I hope she's here.

                       KIRK
Why'd you bring us here? Come on,
man! Let's just leave. I know
she's a bitch, but there's a party
at Derek's right now. And there's
some pretty-looking girls there.
Don't know about you, but I
haven't been with one in a while-

                       SEBASTIAN
Fuck the party. I don't give a
fuck about messing with one of
those girls right now. Fuck!
Where's Abel? I told him to hurry
up.

                       JAMES
He's probably getting the hots
just staring at Mrs. Dane.

                       SEBASTIAN
I don't think anyone would want
her.

From the corner of the house, we see their friend ABEL tread
toward them. Sweat streams from his forehead.

11.

                       JAMES
      (to Abel)
You took long enough! Probably got
all excited from watching her. He
laughs.

Sebastian shoves his elbow at Jame's shoulder, ceasing his
laughter.

                       SEBASTIAN
Shut up. Someone might hear us.
      (looking at Abel)
So...is she there? She's in the
house?

                       ABEL
Yeah. Her and her baby are asleep.
Looks like they'll be asleep for a
long time.

                       SEBASTIAN
Maybe forever.

                       ABEL
What's going on, Sebastian? Why'd
you ask me to look for her?

Ignoring him, Sebastian takes out a bottle filled with
gasoline and a lighter from his pocket.

                       SEBASTIAN
This bitch never liked me, and I
don't like her.

Walking to the porch, he draws out another item from his
pocket, a cigarette. He lights it and looks back at his
friends, eyes saturated with malevolence.

James runs up to him, stunned.

                       JAMES
What are you doing!

                       SEBASTIAN
What ya think I'm doing? Giving
this bitch a lesson.

                       JAMES
Nah, man. You're getting yourself
into a death wish. For God's sake,
she has a baby in there!

12.

Ignoring him, Sebastian hurls the bottle at the front door.
It breaks. He tosses the cigarette over the porch and
instantly, fire erupts. Sebastian retreats and pauses on the
lawn, staring at the growing fire. Sarah gasps.

                       JAMES
We gotta go NOW! Quick, before the
police come!

Sebastian doesn't move; Kirk and Abel leave. The fire
consumes all of the porch, traveling toward the roof.
Sebastian finally departs the scene and James follows.
Before James exits Waltz, he turns around and locks eyes
with Sarah. Sarah, stunned, races out of the bushes and
screams for help.

An old woman next store to Mrs. Dane appears out of her
house and spots Sarah.

                       SARAH
      (to her)
Call nine one one!

The lady races back inside. Sarah sprints to her teacher's
backyard door, hoping to save her and her baby.

EXT. BACKYARD

Sarah reaches 2 patio sliding doors and hears the baby's
cries inside. Through the glass we see slithering smoke and
flashes of orange from far away. Without thinking twice, she
breaks the glass and unlocks the doors from inside.

INT. DAY ROOM

Most of the room is obscured in smoke as Sarah quickly skims
around, trying to trace the origin of the baby's cries for
she could follow them. She discovers an exit in the room.

INT. HALL

Running with sweat, coughing from heavy smoke, she spots a
raging fire dancing in the kitchen.

INT. LIVING ROOM

Nearly all the windows and furniture are consumed in fire.
She runs up a staircase, hearing her teacher's screams.

INT. 2ND FLOOR HALL

Reaching the top of the stairs, she sees smoke and glowing
red from under one of the doors. Mrs. Dane's terrible

13.

screams are heard from that room. Sarah desperately tries to
open it.

                       SARAH
MRS. DANE!

                       MRS. DANE
      (crying)
SARAH...MY GOD...HELP ME. The door
won't open! My baby...please save
my baby.

EXT. WALTZ STREET - NIGHT

Spectators, cops and firemen drown the crime scene of Mrs.
Dane's property. Much of the fire has already been
extinguished, but the house is almost entirely burned.
Burying her face into her mom's chest, Sarah turns her gaze
to the side as paramedics carry a burnt Mrs. Dane out of the
house. Steaming flesh patch her teacher's face.

EXT. BLAKE JR. HIGH CAMPUS - DAY

SUPERIMPOSE: "SEVERAL WEEKS LATER"

The school day has just ended for Sarah. Saying goodbye to
Beverly and watching her disappear down the campus, Sarah
looks up into the sky. It's a beautiful afternoon; lush
green grass encircles her and the sky is clear. She heads
down the campus going home.

EXT. DAVIS STREET - DAY

Sarah enters Davis, a quiet street inundated with cracks and
houses silhouetted by the heating sun. Distant traffic is
the only noise she hears as she walks down the sidewalk.
Suddenly, she feels a hand clutch her arm violently from
behind and is swirled into a nearby shade. She gets thrown
against a tree and is face-to-face with Sebastian.

Pale and clenching his teeth, he covers her mouth. She
flounders to break free, pushing and hitting his chest, but
it proves effortless as he quickly pins her against the
tree. She panics and looks around for people, but finds no
one. He draws his face closer to her, grabbing her arms and
putting them over her head, pinning them also.

                       SEBASTIAN
The cops are looking for me...and
do you want to know you why?

14.

He pulls out a pocket knife from his pocket and switches out
the blade. She watches him paralyzed.

                       SEBASTIAN
I'll tell you why. A certain
someone...who'd watched me start
that little fire weeks ago,
suddenly went to the cops and told
them it was me.

He moves the blade near her cheek and gently pierces her
skin, a trail of blood materializing. She strives to scream,
but he applies greater pressure against her mouth. There's
silence.

                       SEBASTIAN
This bitch didn't think I was
going to find out, but little did
she know...
      (terrified)
You know they're thinking of
giving me YEARS for what I've
done.
      (sarcastically)
And it's all thanks to you. All
thanks to you.

She looks over his shoulder and sees a MAN walking out of a
house, glancing suspiciously at them.

                       MAN
      (to Sebastian)
Hey, what the hell are you doing
to her?

Sebastian looks at him, loosening his grip on her. Sarah
makes a run for it.

                       SEBASTIAN
      (chasing after her)
You wanna rat on people, huh! You
bitch!

EXT. NATHAN AVE.

Entering Nathan Avenue, she spots a police car parked at the
end of the street. She races to it and sees an officer
talking into a walkie talkie, clearing not paying attention
to her. She slams her hands on the passenger window and
attains his attention.

                       SARAH
Help me! Help me! Please!

15.

The officer casts his attention off her and looks ahead.
Sarah follows. Sebastian, having barely entered the street,
darts back at them and turns around to depart. The cop
starts the car and races after him, disappearing out of the
street.

INT. COURTROOM - DAY

The jury looks at Sebastian and his friends sitting behind
the defendant's desk. They are all wearing orange jail
uniforms. Sarah and a recovered Mrs. Dane, although scarred
by burns, sit behind the bar.

                       JUDGE
      (looking at papers)
Kirk Rice, James Trent, and Abel
Miller, I find you all guilty of
arson and sentenced you to one
year at the Chicago Juvenile
Center.

There's a pause. Sarah and Mrs. Dane look at Sebastian in
great anticipation.

                       JUDGE
Sebastian Coleham, I hereby find
you guilty of arson and sentenced
you to twelve years at the Chicago
Juvenile Center.

Quiet, looking down, Sebastian slowly rises from his seat,
along with his friends, as they prepare for the guards to
take them away. Hands pressed against the desk, he looks at
the judge, laughing.

                       SEBASTIAN
She had to. She just had to.
      (looks at Sarah)
This is what you wanted
right...after what I've done to
you?
      (beat)
But everything's okay.
Everything's okay.

Suddenly Sebastian hurries to Sarah, about to attack.
Screams erupt. Sarah, shocked, turns around to flee, but a
team of security guards seize him in time. They struggle to
pull him out of the room as he scorns at her.

16.

INT. BLAKE JR. HIGH/ CAFETERIA - DAY

Sarah struggles to eat her lunch as a nearby girl calls
malevolent names to her. Tightening her fists, Sarah gets up
from her table and charges the girl. Fists are thrown
everywhere, and Sarah ends up winning the fight. Kids glance
at Sarah with widened eyes, shocked.

EXT. HAILEY STREET - DAY

Sarah puts her last box of personal items in the back of her
dad's truck. She emits a sad look at her empty house as her
parents wait for her in the car. Sticking out of their lawn
is sign reading FOR SALE. Honks BLARE from the car.

                       EDDIE
      (from inside the
       car)
Sarah, we gotta go.

                       SARAH
Beverly's coming. Just another
minute, dad.

                       SARAH'S MOM
      (from inside the
       car)
Eddie, please. Let them say
goodbye first before we go.

                       EDDIE
Beverly has her number. They can
call. Sarah, get in.

The car starts and Sarah quietly gets in. They drive away,
fall leaves drifting in the distance.

BEGIN OPENING CREDITS.

THE FOLLOWING OCCURS DURING THE CREDITS, MAINLY DISPLAYING
SARAH'S LIFE FROM 1984 TO 1987:

INT. WESTWOOD HIGH SCHOOL/ MAIN HALL - DAY

We see Sarah befriending a group of bullies. She's lost her
braces and some weight.

17.

INT. WESTWOOD HIGH SCHOOL/ CAFETERIA - DAY

Sarah and her friend, a girl with long blond hair, corner a
smaller girl into the wall. Shivering, the smaller girl
quickly reaches into her pocket and hands them money.

INT. NEW LOTTEN HOUSE/ KITCHEN - NIGHT

The kitchen is old-fashioned, built in the 60s, with pale
yellow walls and orange tiles. Sarah's MOM and Eddie argue
with each other as Sarah enters the kitchen, bags with her
personal belongings in her hand.

                       SARAH'S MOM
      (to Eddie)
How could you! She's our daughter,
and you touched her!

                       EDDIE
So you're gonna kick me out of the
house for this? I'm the one who
paid for everything around here!
Without me, you'd be nothing!

                       SARAH
      (tear-eyed)
I can't stay here anymore.

They ignore her.

                       SARAH'S MOM
I hate you, Eddie. I fuckin' hate
you!

She aims her fists at his chest, but Eddie grips her arms,
ceasing her.

                       EDDIE
      (holding her arms)
Stop this. Alright?
      (breathing hard)
On second thought, if you want me
out so bad, fine!

He stumps to the kitchen exit.

                       SARAH'S MOM
      (suddenly
       screaming)
No, Eddie! I'm sorry! Please don't
go! I didn't mean it. I swear, I
didn't mean it!

18.

She races up to him, holding his arm from moving forward

                       SARAH'S MOM
      (crying)
Baby, I'm sorry.

Frowning, Sarah leaves the kitchen.

INT. JUVENILE HALL/ CAFETERIA - DAY

Packed with people, the cafeteria is full of activity as
Sebastian enters it, dressed in a white jail uniform. He
skims his eyes everywhere and finds a seat with Caucasians.
Quiet, not looking at them, he eats. A BURLY GUY with two
friends notices Sebastian and slowly walks up to him, their
hands in their pockets. Sebastian, ignoring them, continues
eating.

                       BURLY GUY
Hey, look, guys. We have a newbie
here.
      (hitting
       Sebastian's
       shoulder)
You know this is my seat?

                       SEBASTIAN
I never saw a name on it.

                       BURLY GUY
Talking shit, aren't we?
      (laughing with his
       friends)
Look at this motherfucker, guys?

Sebastian stays quiet. The burly guy leans into his face.

                       BURLY GUY
You have pretty lips. Maybe you
can come into my cell tonight.
They must be good for something.

Underneath the table, we see Sebastian applying brass
knuckles.

                       BURLY GUY
Now get out of my seat.

Silence.

                       BURLY GUY
You deaf, faggot?

19.

A LOUD BANG erupts as Sebastian quickly socks him in the
face. The burly guy falls backward, blood on his face.
Charging him with repeated punches, Sebastian grabs a nearby
chair and slams it on his face. The burly guy's friends try
to swing at Sebastian, but he instantly brings them down
with punches. Winning the fight, Sebastian stands up to a
crowd of shocked people.

                       SEBASTIAN
      (looking down on
       him)
There's your seat. And by the way,
name's Sebastian.

EXT. MODERICK BLVD. - NIGHT

People saturate the street screaming in joy as the new year
approaches. Confetti and music drift everywhere as some
kiss, drink, destroy public property like smashing cars and
mail boxes, clearly for celebration. Sarah is in the center
of the crowd, tranquilly smoking a cigarette. Now thin and
beautiful, with curvy hips, Sarah wears a short blouse and
skirt. A handsome stranger strolls up to her and they
suddenly kiss.

EXT. JUVENILE HALL/ YARD - DAY

Sebastian and his group of friends tread down the yard,
their faces calm. Several inmates shake hands with him;
others don't bother gazing at him. They know he's not to be
messed with.

INT. JUVENILE HALL/ NORTH HALL - DAY

Narrow, with only a stream of light creeping in, the hall is
filled with distant echoes. MELISSA (25), an attractive
guard, rushes down the hall, tears in her eyes. Behind
Sebastian follows her.

                       MELISSA
You used me.

Stopping, she turns to him. He pauses.

                       MELISSA
You want me to take the blame for
you, that I hid those drugs under
your bed? Sebastian, please don't
make me do this...

20.

                       SEBASTIAN
      (eyebrows dropped)
You have to. You think I wanna
have more years in here?
      (pause)
If they convict you, you'll likely
to get only months because, you
said so yourself, it'll be your
first defense.

                       MELISSA
I won't do it. They were yours.

                       SEBASTIAN
Fine. I'll just tell the judge
about our little thing we had
together. You knew I was a minor,
and you had sex with me anyway.

                       MELISSA
It was only one time! And you
seduced ME.

                       SEBASTIAN
But who're they gonna believe me:
me or you?
      (beat)
Do you really want the public to
know you're a sex offender? It'll
ruin everything you have going for
you.
      (walking away)
Remember, I have your underwear as
proof.

INT. HELDA LOTTEN'S HOUSE/ LIVING ROOM - DAY

A picture of Beverly is on the TV news as Sarah buries her
face into her hands.

                       FEMALE NEWS REPORTER
      (from TV)
Police today discovered Chicago
resident Beverly Rescot's body
after her mom reported she had
been missing for several months.
Police are investigating her death
as a homicide...

END OF OPENING CREDITS.

21.

EXT. HELDA LOTTEN'S FRONT LAWN - DAY

SUPERIMPOSE: "FALL 1987 - NEW JERSEY"

For the past four years, Sarah has been residing in Hutson,
New Jersey, recently moving in at her Grandma's. The economy
isn't doing good and it reflects particularly in Hutson.

Sarah, dressed in a blue coat and long skirt, heads out the
front door, appearing onto the lawn. Her friend ELIZABETH
SANTIAGO waits for her in the car. Sarah's grandma, HELDA
LOTTEN, steps out of the front door with an apron on.

                       HELDA
Sarah, wait! What about breakfast?
You can't go to school on an empty
stomach.

                       SARAH
I'm fine, grandma. Thanks anyway.

                       HELDA
But you have that Algebra test
today. You need brain power!

                       ELIZABETH
      (peering her head
       out of the car,
       smiling)
I'm sure she'll pass, Mrs. Lotten.
And if she doesn't, she'll just do
her teacher 'special favors' like
she always does. That's how she
passes classes anyway.

                       SARAH
      (surprised)
Elizabeth!

                       ELIZABETH
Only kidding, Mrs. Lotten.

Elizabeth starts the car as Sarah gets into the passenger
side.

                       HELDA
Have a wonderful day, girls.

They smile back at her as Elizabeth drives off.

INT. ELIZABETH'S CAR - DAY - TRAVELING

22.

Sarah immediately takes off her coat and throws it in the
back of the car, revealing a low-cut blouse underneath. She
takes off her skirt and also tosses it in the back,
revealing a shorter skirt and tanned legs. She takes out
blush from her purse and applies it over her face.

                       ELIZABETH
I still can't believe she's never
found out about this.
      (pointing at her
       revealed clothes)
I would've thought she'd find out
by now.

                       SARAH
At least I can wear makeup in
front of my grandma. I could never
do this living with my parents.

                       ELIZABETH
I can see why. If I had parents
like yours, I would've gone nuts.
Speaking of which, when's the last
time you spoke to your mom?

                       SARAH
Been forever, but do you know my
calls with her are being monitored
now?
      (mimicking a
       girl's voice)
"It's courts orders" Kate says.

                       ELIZABETH
Same thing happened when my
parents got divorced and my mom
got custody of me.

                       SARAH
Except mine never got divorced; I
was taken away from them.

                       ELIZABETH
Still, you're lucky you live with
your grandma. I gotta deal with a
stupid-ass mom.

                       SARAH
Your mom aint that bad.

                       ELIZABETH
She's chaotic, Sarah. She made me
go to the confession room at
church last week, which I spent an

                       SARAH
What kind of lies?

                       ELIZABETH
One that I had kids from four
different dads.

They laugh.

                       ELIZABETH
I've heard Janey got your part in
the school play yesterday. Looks
like you won't be kissing that
Adrian guy in there after all.

                       SARAH
She knows I like him and she plays
this shit on me anyway. When I see
her she's dead.

INT. WESTWOOD HIGH SCHOOL/ MAIN HALL - DAY

The hangout for many kids. Here, kids are sorted into
numerous social groups: jocks, nerds, Gothics, etc. A couple
kisses passionately, a few misfit boys run down the hall
from the principal, vanishing, and a girl shows a few dance
moves to some friends. The entrance doors burst open, and in
strolls Westwood's most popular girls, GLORIA BRIGGINS,
DENISE HILLS, and MONIQUE PORTRAIT. Kids move to the side as
they make their way down the hall, their faces like angels.
Most boys have their eyes on Gloria, the leader of the
three. Some boys blush, others whistle and wink at her, but
Gloria ignores all of this. They reach their lockers and
open them simultaneously. Whistles still get thrown at
Gloria.

                       MONIQUE
      (to Gloria)
My God, why are they all rooting
for you?

                       GLORIA
      (smiling)
I went to Damien's party last
weekend. His friends dared me to
flash them, and, well...I did.

                       MONIQUE/DENISE
WHAT?

24.

                       GLORIA
Relax. I didn't flash them for
free. They paid me.

                       MONIQUE
Gloria, that's gross.

                       GLORIA
Maybe for you, but I sure as hell
enjoyed it.

                       MONIQUE
God, I can't stand these whistles.

                       GLORIA
Well, maybe if you dated more
often, they wouldn't be that bad
for you. I mean, you've been with
Raymond for Christ, I-don't-know
how-long-now? Don't you think it's
time you move on with someone
eles?

                       MONIQUE
What's wrong with Raymond and I?

                       GLORIA
For starters, I never see you two
spend time together and he hardly
calls you.

                       MONIQUE
That's because he works a lot. His
boss is an asshole, you know, and
I've heard Raymond's mom
disconnected his phone for
ditching class last week.

                       GLORIA
      (sarcastically)
Whatever you say, Monique. If
that's what you call love.

                       DENISE
Like you should know anything
about love, Gloria. You can't even
last an entire day with a guy
before he dumps you.

                       GLORIA
And what about your love life,
Denise? It's pretty boring from
what I hear. I mean, come on. "I

Denise, mouth opened, looks at her speechless.

                       DENISE
That's...that's because I've been
saving myself for someone lately.

                       GLORIA
      (mocking)
Sure. Denise. Sure.

They close their lockers simultaneously and continue
walking, turning a corner.

INT. WEST HALL

                       DENISE
Well, I think you and Raymond make
a cute couple.

                       GLORIA
Okay, topic's over. Let's move on.

A NERDY GIRL abruptly appears in front of them and crashes
into Gloria. Papers fly out of the girl's arms, and she
stares nervously at Gloria.

                       GLORIA
Hey, watch where the hell you're
going! You saw us walking here!

                       NERDY GIRL
I'm so sorry.

Throwing a scared look at her, the girl crouches down and
collects her papers. Monique, eyeing coldly at Gloria, leans
down and helps the girl.

                       GLORIA
      (walking away with
       Denise)
See ya at lunch, Monique.

EXT. WESTWOOD HIGH SCHOOL PARKING LOT - DAY

Under a blue morning sky, with Fall leaves twirling, kids
leave their parked cars to join friends nearby and
socialize. An attractive black truck emblazoned with blue
and yellow flames over its rims enters the lot, and kids
immediately glance at it. A man's voice (singing

26.

passionately to a song on the radio) blares from the car. It
parks, and out of the driver's side, we see a pair of legs,
wearing dark blue jeans and black shoes, step onto the
gravel. We move slowly up the figure, seeing him wear a
bright red shirt, outlined by a semi-brawny body. We stop at
his shaved chin.

The camera rises up and we view a shot of the entire campus
ahead of the parking lot. From there we see him, his back to
us, with blond hair, stroll up the campus. Kids stop in
their tracks to glimpse at him.

INT. WESTWOOD HIGH SCHOOL/ MAIN HALL - DAY

CLOSE-UP:

The same pair of legs, walking briskly down the hall.

INT. MAIN HALL - DAY - SUBJECTIVE CAMERA

We observe blue glistening lockers, windows streaming in
orange light, and kids on the sides of us. They stare at us;
some startled, while a large portion (females) blush. A
blue-eyed girl, treading pass us, grins widely with red
cheeks; another girl at a locker seductively scans her eyes
over us.

A brunette notices us from far away, and, entranced,
she leans against her locker, revealing some cleavage. We
simply pass her, and her smile quickly perishes.

On the left side of us, we see an opened room with a sign
next to it reading "OFFICE." We draw closer to the entrance,
hearing activity inside. We enter.

INT. OFFICE - DAY - SUBJECTIVE CAMERA

A middle-aged LADY skims through a row of folders on her
desk. We approach her, waiting for her attention.

                       LADY
      (looking up at us)
Yes? May I help you?

INT. WESTWOOD HIGH SCHOOL CAFETERIA - DAY

Activity saturates everywhere. Carrying trays, Sarah and
Elizabeth find a table in the middle of the room. They sit
down and eat. Popular kids past them; other don't bother
going near their area.

27.

                       ELIZABETH
What do you see in Adrian anyway?

                       SARAH
Out of all the guys I've liked at
this school, he's the only one who
I've never dated.

                       ELIZABETH
      (giggling)
You little tramp. Tyring to break
a world record by dating guys,
huh? I thought that belonged to
Gloria.

                       SARAH
Don't even compare me to her. As
it is, I don't know why men like
her. Surprised they never go gay
after dating her.

                       ELIZABETH
With Gloria's popularity and
looks, even the gays want her.
      (beat)
I still think you're wasting your
time with Adrian. He's not like
the new guy, Mr. Hot Stuff.

                       SARAH
Enough with your rambling about
this new guy. That's all I've been
hearing from girls all day.
      (looking curious)
Surely he can't be that perfect?

                       ELIZABETH
Just wait 'till you see him. That
boy has sex written all over him.
I feel like a virgin in front of
him, and that's the truth, Honey.

Looking into outer space, Sarah grins.

                       SARAH
So...where is this new guy?

                       ELIZABETH
Please don't end up getting
pregnant.

They hear a girl SCREAM. Sarah sees a nearby girl retreat
from a table and tremble. She follows the girl's gaze to a

28.

sandwich on the ground, with worms hanging from the bread.
Crying, the girl terribly wipes her mouth, while nearby, a
group of bullies laugh. Frowning, Sarah quickly gets up and
leave.

INT. HALL

The hall is vacant. Sarah runs to the bathroom, extremely
bothered.

INT. GIRLS RESTROOM - SAME

Turning off the faucet, Sarah looks into the mirror but sees
her 13-year-old self. Gasping, she runs to a stall and shuts
the door. Tears emerge in her eyes.

                       SARAH
      (shaking)
God, please don't let them find
out. Don't let them find out about
me.

INT. WESTWOOD HIGH SCHOOL/ LIBRARY - DAY

Sitting quietly at an empty table, Monique writes notes from
an opened book beside her. Handsome, dark-haired RAYMOND
TRENT walks towards her and joins her table. He leans into
her face, about to kiss her, but she pulls away.

29.

                       MONIQUE
Raymond, I'm trying to study.

                       RAYMOND
For what?

                       MONIQUE
History.

Rolling his eyes, he slouches into his seat.

                       RAYMOND
You coming to my house tonight?

                       MONIQUE
I can't.

                       RAYMOND
Okay, then I'll come to yours.

                       MONIQUE
No. I'm babysitting.

                       RAYMOND
What's wrong? We used to see each
other all the time.

                       MONIQUE
I don't wanna rush things between
us, Raymond.

                       RAYMOND
You're not. Don't ever think that
i'm forcing you, okay?

He smiles at her; she does the same.

Sitting at a table with Denise, looking at fashion catalogs,
Gloria watches them from a distance.

                       GLORIA
      (staring at
       Monique)
I regret making her popular. It's
only been four months, and yet,
she's getting more attention every
day. Sometimes, I think more than
me.
      (looks at Denise,
       displeased)
Everyone likes her. Even the men.
If you ask me, they only value her
because she's innocent and a
virgin. No doubt she's lying.

30.

                       GLORIA (cont'd)
Monique's just a tease to them.
      (beat)
Do you think he really likes her?

                       DENISE
      (flipping a page)
You mean Raymond?

                       GLORIA
No. Henry the fifth. Of course
Raymond, you idiot.

                       DENISE
      (gazes at them)
Well, Gloria, it's pretty obvious.

Suddenly Gloria's face turns red as she watches him kiss
Monique.

                       GLORIA
      (scorning at
       Monique)
We'll see.

INT. WESTWOOD HIGH SCHOOL/ ENGLISH CLASS - DAY

CLAUDIA DRIFFLE(26), an attractive teacher with a
goddess-like body, writes notes on the board as kids copy
them down. She stops writing, faces the class and approaches
the front of her desk. Boys gaze at her, transfixed.

                       MS. DRIFFLE
      (smiling)
As you all know, Open House will
be this Friday and I'm hoping to
see you and your parents there.
I'll be providing snacks and
beverages, and extra credit will
be awarded for those who attend.
It's my first Open House, so,
please, bear with me...I'm still
new to this teaching thing.

She giggles. In the center of the class Raymond stares at
her, heart racing and sweating profusely.

Sitting on her desk, legs crossed, the teacher winks
at us. Leaning, she clutches a ripe rose near her
and slowly slides it over her blouse, to her slim waist. She
blows a kiss at us.

INT. ENGLISH CLASS - SAME

Zapping out of his fantasy, Raymond focuses back on a
talkative Ms. Driffle. Next to him his friend TODD notices.

                       TODD
      (to Raymond)
Hey, Christian Boy, get your mind
of the gutter.
      (looks at Ms.
       Driffle)
Though I don't blame you, man.
She's a bomb waiting to go off.

INT. WESTWOOD HIGH SCHOOL/ MATH CLASS - DAY

Kids sit silently as their teacher MRS. CUNNINGS reads a
book at her desk. Whispering with Elizabeth in the back of
the room, Sarah picks on a scrawny girl in front of her,
throwing a ball of paper at the back of her head. Everyone
hears it. The teacher quickly draws her attention to the
class.

                       MRS. CUNNINGS
      (eyebrows drawn
       down)
Who threw that?

She sees Sarah and Elizabeth giggling and immediately
assumes it was Sarah. She walks up to Sarah, arms crossed.

                       MRS. CUNNINGS
Get out of my class.

                       SARAH
What for?

She directs Sarah's attention to the paper.

                       SARAH
Where's the visual evidence, Mrs.
Cunnings?

                       MRS. CUNNINGS
Come on, Sarah? Do you think I'm
stupid?

32.

                       SARAH
Maybe.

                       MRS. CUNNINGS
That's it. Get up right now and I
don't want you back in my class
until a week from now! You'll be
serving office detentions.

                       SARAH
      (angrily)
Like I'm gonna show?

                       MRS. CUNNINGS
I don't care whether you do or
not. That'll just lead you to
suspension from Principal Collins.
I don't know why you attend my
class anyway. All you do is
disturb the students and waste my
time.

                       SARAH
      (over exaggerating)
You're spitting on me, Mrs.
Cunnings.

                       MRS. CUNNINGS
      (sarcastically)
Oh, am I? I'm sorry. Now get up
and leave.

She points Sarah to the door. Sarah gets up and leaves.

INT. EAST HALL

Walking, Sarah observes star decorations on the walls and a
banner reading "Star Dance Coming Soon." She reaches the
school exit, opens it, and

EXT. WEST SIDE CAMPUS

is grabbed by a set of heavy arms. She gets whirled and is
instantly slammed against a wall. Eyes magnified in horror,
paralyzed, she gazes at a tall, blond-haired boy in front of
her, clutching her arms aggressively. Faint scars on his
face, wearing a red shirt and blue jeans, he glares
intensely at her. It is none other than Sebastian Coleham,
fully grown.

33.

                       SEBASTIAN
Thought I wouldn't find you, huh?
Thought I wouldn't find you, you
stupid bitch!

She trembles, clearly not believing any of this.

                       SARAH
Sebastian?

                       SEBASTIAN
You didn't think I would find ya,
but I did.

                       SARAH
      (stumbling)
What are you doing here?

                       SEBASTIAN
Finishing what you owed me.

He draws out a pocket knife but before he has the chance to
use it, a janitor steps out of the school next to them,
grasping trash bags. Sebastian quickly retreats from her.
Shaking, Sarah flees, but Sebastian doesn't follow her. He
simply watches her disappear down the campus.

INT. HELDA LOTTEN'S HOUSE/ HALL - DAY

Frowning, a wave of uttered shock on her face, Sarah enters
the house. Locking the front door, she looks around and sees
the house deserted. She goes up a staircase.

INT. SARAH'S ROOM

Entering, she walks to her bed and sits down. Silent, she
gazes into outer space.

INT. COURTROOM (FLASHBACK)

Terrified, Sarah looks at Sebastian as guard strive to take
him out of the room. He grins ominously at her.

                       SEBASTIAN
The day I see you again, it'll be
like old times. It'll be like old
times, baby.

INT. SARAH'S ROOM - SAME

Like a wall tumbling to pieces, Sarah falls to the floor,
crying her loudest she's done in years.

FADE OUT.
