Hamlin is a fifteen-year-old Chicana who, against her mother Ofilia’s wishes seemed destined for show bix. After penning her song ‘Angel Baby’ she is encouraged by Ofilia’s younger brother, Albert, a musican and the only paternal figure in Rosie’s life, to expose her music. So, backed by Albert’s band, Rosie performs ‘Angel Baby’ to a capacity crowd in her living room, but it is relentlessly broken up by Ofilia. Roise and Albert remain undeterred, however. The following evening Rosie again flanked by Albert’s band mesmerizes the kids at a dance in the high school gym with ‘Angel Baby’ She also captures the attention of Noah Tafolla, a guitarist in the competing band. Noah and Rosie and develop a romance. As her popularity grows, so does the relationship. Meanwhile Albert, eager for ‘Angel Baby’s’ success replaces his guitarist with Noah, producing an atmosphere where the two lovebirds can play and sing. The band, officially called The Originals, records ‘Angel Baby’ at an airplane hanger, then makes a zealous attempty to promote it vis several radio stations. But the big break occures in a large department store where ‘Angel Baby’ enraptures a mob of teenagers while catching the ear of a struggling record promoter for Brunswick Records, Murry Cohan. He gets the band a record deal, propelling Rosie to stardom. But it all happens so fast. Rosie, too immature for the machinations of manipulators too prevalent in the music industry, becomes a pawn for Alice Seckler, a ruthless record producer

INT. HAMLIN HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - DAY

Simple, not overbearing. Attired in furniture from the late
Forties, A piano embraces the wall to our left. Rosie
enters and throws her books and sweater on the couch.

                       ROSIE
Mom, I'm home!

She freezes as she waits for an answer. There is none.

                       ROSIE
Mom?!

Again no answer.

                       ROSIE
Oh well.

She heads for the piano bench and pulls out the homemade
sheet music of Angel Baby," shuts the bench, then sits on it
as she prepares to polish the song.

She grabs a pencil nearly and makes a few corrections, then
plays the first two arpeggios, hesitates, then resumes
playing.

                       OFILIA (O.S.)
Rosie! Stop playin' that damn
piano!

Rosie stops and listens while her mother OFILIA yells some
more O.S.:

                       OFILIA (O.S.)
You;ve got dishes to wash...

Suddenly Ofilia wiggles into the living room, a homemade
beauty. Low-cut dress, tight at the hips, and coats of make
up to hide the lines and wrinkles that map her face.

                       ROSIE
      (Indicating the
       make up)
Mom, don't you wear too much of
that stuff?

She turns around.

                       OFILIA
Zip me up, sweetie.

Rosie starts zipping the back of her mother's dress.

4.

                       OFILIA
Never mind how much makeup I wear.

Rosie is still zipping up her mom.

                       OFILIA
No one has complained yet. By the
way, the sink is full of dishes.

                       ROSIE
I know. I heard you the first
time.

                       OFILIA
After that I want you to do your
homework.

Ofilia is almost zipped up when she spins around to face her
daughter.

                       OFILIA
You'll never marry a doctor or
lawyer unless you're a good
housekeeper...

Ofilia motions to her head.

                       OFILIA
....and have a few beans jumping
around upstairs.

                       ROSIE
But Mom, I don't wannna be a maid.

                       OFILIA
You wanna be smart, don't you?

Ofilia points at the piano.

                       OFILIA
That thing's nothing but bad news.

                       ROSIE
Then why do we have it?

A good question. Ofilia dismisses Rosie with a few paces to
the other side of the picture window concealed behind a
white curtain.

Oflilia takes a peer through the window.

We HEAR a car horn.

5.

                       OFILIA
      (Elated)
I'm going out. See ya tonight,
sweetie.

She kisses Rosie on the forehead before dashing out.

A crush of people, mostly teenagers, eating and chatting.

ALBERT HAMILN(21), handsome, slim, is seated at a booth with
his girlfriend.

GLORIA MARTINEZ(19), sexy, vivacious, she sits close to
Albert. The rest of his band are alos seated close by.

ANGLE - ROSIE

as she enters and, not seeing them, walks over to the
separate stools.

Albert places his finger to his lips for his friends to be
quiet as he stealthily rises and steals towards Rosie.

He jabs her in the limbs, startling her. She makes an
about-fce, and relaxes when she sees him.

                       ALBERT
Shocked ya, uh?

Rosie shyly shrugs her shoulders and smiles.

                       ALBERT
Tienes una sonrisa bonita.

Rosie blushes.

                       ROSIE
You have a pretty smile, too Uncle
Albert.

He wraps his arm around her.

                       ALBERT
C'mon, Rosie, join the gang.

Albert gently steers Rosie to his booth, and the others make
room for them. As Rosie sits down, she's GREETED by about
everyone there. She's obviously well-liked. About the only
one Rosie doesn't know is Gloria.

6.

                       ALBERT
Rosie, meet Gloria.

Albert nuzzles Gloria's ear.

                       ALBERT
...mi deliciosa.

Gloria laughs. After Albert releases her, she shakes
Rosie's hand.

                       GLORIA
You better watch your uncle.

Albert abruptly changes the subject.

                       ALBERT
      (To Rosie)
So your mom's gonna be gone all
night?

Rosie nods. A broad smile graces Albert's face. He turns
to the others in his booth:

                       ALBERT
Did you hear that you guys? It's
on!

CLOSE ON ROSIE

with a look of regret.

EXT. HAMLIN HOUSE - NIGHT

The street and driveway are jammed with cars. Teenagers
linger on the lawn and porch guzzling beers and listening to
live music coming from inside the house.

The atmosphere is a bit rowdy, but not enough for the
neighbors to call the cops.

INT. HAMLIN HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

Filled with teenagers having a good time. Many are dancing
to a lively dance tune.

Albert and his band are playing the song with dramatic
verve.

Teenagers bob to the beat of the song.

7.

Rosie stands at the doorway, a smile pinned to her mug as
she captures a panoramic view of the band and the dancing
crowd.

Gloria dances near the band, shaking wildly to the dark
pulsating room.

Rosie watches the crowd drinking and dancing. Secluded
couples engaged in hushed confabs. Rosie watches the band,
her smile immutable.

The song ends, and Albert's band decides to have a break.
Albert sets his guitar down, forges a path through the crowd
until he reaches Gloira.

                       GLORIA
Hey Albert, where're you headed?

Albert smiles.

                       ALBERT
I'll be back.

He resumes his way through the crowd until he reaches Rosie,
still standing by the door.

                       ALBERT
Hey Rosie, you should be enjoying
yourself.

                       ROSIE
I am, Uncle Albert.

                       ALBERT
C'mon and sing.

                       ROSIE
      (Shyly)
No...

He motions with his finger.

                       ALBERT
C'mon, Rosie, we've all got copies
of Angel Baby. All you have to do
is sing.

The crowd is oblivious of Rosie and Albert.

                       ALBERT
What can happen, Rosie? The worst
is you'd probably swallow the
microphone.

8.

Rosie giggles.

                       ROSIE
      (Curling her nose)
Okay.

Albert catches Rosie's hand and guides her to the band area.

                       BAND MEMBER
      (Very congenially)
Hi Rosie.

                       ALBERT
      (To the band)
Let's take fifteen after Angel
Baby.'

The band members nod "no sweat" as Rosie takes her place
before the microphone. She's nervous and unsure of herself.

                       ALBERT
      (So only Rosie can
       hear)
Don't worry, Rosie. Remember I'm
right behind you.

She nods. She's more comfortable now as the band preps
itself. Then Albert turns to Rosie again.

                       ALBERT
      (Gently as usual)
Just let us know when you're
ready.

A tense pause before she nods to the band.

The music STARTS, and suddenly the audience hushes.

The band is playing the prelude.

Rosie belts out "Angel Baby."

                       ROSIE
      (Singing)
It's just like heaven, Bein' here
with you.

The band backs her up in an ocean of harmony.

                       ROSIE
      (Singing)
You're just like an angel, Too
good to be true"

9.

The audience stands absorbed in Rosie and the melodious
"Angel Baby." She becomes the subject of silent talk among
the teenagers.

                       ROSIE
      (Singing)
'But after all, I love you I do.
Angel baby, my angel baby....

EXT. HAMLIN HOUSE - NIGHT

A car pulls up front, and Ofilia emerges, thunderstruck at
the sight of kids drinking and couples necking to the tune
of "Angel Baby." She turns to the car.

                       OFILIA
Thanks for the ride.

The car barrels away as the incensed. Ofilia lumbers her
way up the driveway shoving kids around, breaking up
couples.

                       OFILIA
Get outta here!! Damnit, get the
fuck away from my house!!

She slaps a beer can from a girl's hand.

                       OFILIA
      (To the girl)
You heard me, you drunken whore!!

Ofilia makes for the front door.

INT. HAMLIN HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

Everyone is having a good time when Ofilia brashly barges
in, throwing kids around. The music suddenly STOPS.

Rosie immediately flies through the dumbfounded crowd,
embarrassed, to her mother who opens the door and starts
hurling parties out. Those lucky to escape her wrath bolt
out on their own.

                       ROSIE
      (Ashamed)
I'm sorry. Mom.

Rosie enters the crowd, which has fizzled considerably, and
starts asking everyone to leave.

10.

                       ROSIE
      (Amiably)
C'mon everyone out. C'mon. Let's
go.

She continues gently escorting people out as her mother's
ire increases. Ofilia AD-LIBS shouts for everyone to leave
or else.

Soon about the only ones there are the band. Ofilia marches
straight up to Albert and locks stares with him.

                       OFILIA
      (Emphatically)
You no good, talentless
son-of-a-bitch!!

EXT. PRESIDIO PARK - DAY

A vast, vernal green plot of land with arterial sidewalks
and a heterogeneous blend of people out to enjoy a sunny
Saturday afternoon: couples in lengthy promenades, babies
in strollers, kids flying kites, old people seated feeding
birds, etc.

Two adjacent water fountains. A black boy bouncing a
deflated basketball stops by Fountain #1. to get a swig of
water, then hurries away. A couple of white girls wander
over to Fountain #2. One catches a quick sip before her
friend takes over as shafts of sunlight assail the solitary
fountain nearby.

Albert, Gloria, and Rosie stroll along, not a care in the
world. Albert and Gloria are snuggled together. the three
are enjoying small talk, their mood as carefree as
ever--through Rosie appears a bit more reserved, as usual.

                       ALBERT
      (Out of the blue)
So, Rosie, what do you wanna be
when you grow up?

Rosie smiles. The question allows her to escape into
fantasyland.

                       ROSIE
Oh, I don't know. A song writer,
I guess. Maybe a singer like
Patsy Cline.

11.

                       ALBERT
You'll be a grownup before you
know it.

Gloria laughs.

                       GLORIA
And Al here will still be a kid.

Rosie smiles.

ANOTHER ANGLE - LARGE, DOOR LESS SHED

ensconced in the womb of a neatly manicured hill. A
collaboration of instruments and amplifiers fills the
interior, used frequently by local bands as a makeshift
stage.

A racial smorgasbord of musicians are working zealously
loading the equipment onto a pickup.

INT. SHED - VARIOUS ANGLES - DAY

Musicians are disengaging instruments from amps, unplugging
wire, hauling the equipment off the stage into the truck.

EXT. PARK - DAY

                       ALBERT
Some party last night, uh, Rosie?

Rosie smiles shyly.

                       ROSIE
      (Reserved)
I guess.

                       OFILIA
We understand if you don't wanna
say anything about your mom.

                       ALBERT
Heck, she was the party. Am I
some talentless loser?

Gloria plants a fat kiss on his cheek.

                       GLORIA
No. You're a talentless
son-of-a-bitch.

12.

                       ROSIE
Say, Uncle Albert, there's
something I don't understand.

                       ALBERT
Yeah?

                       ROSIE
Wasn't Mom into that type of thing
when she was young?

                       ALBERT
      (Caught off guard)
I know what you're thinkin' Rosie.
You want explanations from
someone who hasn't any.

He points to the hill beyond.

                       ALBERT
On the other side, you guys, is
where everything's happenin'

THEIR POINT OF VIEW - HILL

A mound of spring-fresh greenery beneath a field of
sun-soaked azure.

EXT. SHED - DAY

The only people around are the musicians loading the last of
the musical paraphernalia into the back of the truck.

A hundred yards down the sidewalk that skirts the hill,
Albert, Rosie and Gloria emerge.

BACK TO SHED

The musicians haul the last of the instruments and amps onto
the pickup when Albert and company arrive at the shed.

                       ALBERT
      (To Gloria and
       Rosie)
They should've been here.

The musicians stash the last of their equipment onto the
pickup, then take off.

Albert, Gloria, and Rosie make for the large opening in the
hill. A few beats later we HEAR an approaching motor. The
three look back.

13.

Another small truck winds down the sidewalk towards the
shed.

The truck stops, and three MUSICIANS jumps out.

                       MUSICIAN #1
Never let you down, Al.

Albert turns to Rosie.

                       ALBERT
So you wanna give it a spin?

INT. SHED - LATER - DAY

Crammed with musical gadgetry everywhere, just like before.
Only now a different band is here. A stream of wires flows
several yards out into the hill.

Albert is looking as cool as always, seen glistening on his
guitar, before an audience of one--Gloria. Rosie stands,
more self-assured, behind the mike.

She turns to the band in back, garrisoned at the instruments
and eager for Rosie's green light.

                       ROSIE
Ready, guys.

The band obeys, delivering the intro before Rosie cuts in:

                       ROSIE
      (Singing)
'It's just like heaven, Bein' here
with you....'

INT. GYMNASIUM - NIGHT

Dimly lit. Host to a sock hop where endless throngs of
teenagers swing in mad copulation with each others shadows
to wild, primordial beat of "Rock Around the Clock" by Bill
Haley and the Comets.

ANGLE - STAGE

A tableau of musicians hammering out "Rock Around the Clock"

DAVID PONCE(18), the singer, greased-back coiffure a la
Evis, T-shirt, blue jeans and black-leather jacket, snuggles
the mike to his mug as he belts out the song.

14.

NOAH TAFOLLA(17), laid back, handsome, casual, he's playing
the guitar.

Rosie and Albert enter, then glance around before heading
towards the stage, sifting their way through the labyrinth
of teenagers. Albert finds a place to dance, oblivious of
Rosie as she treads on.

                       ALBERT
This might be a good a place as
any to dance. I hope you don't
mind dancing with your Uncle
Albert but--

He suddenly notices her plodding to the stage as if pulled
by some unseen, hypnotic force, then catches up with her.

                       ALBERT
Rosie

Rosie stops, her eyes riveted on the band. She points
subtly at Noah.

                       ROSIE
Uncle Albert, who's that guy?

                       ALBERT
Why?

                       ROSIE
      (Reticent)
Oh, I don't know...there's
something about him
that's...different.

                       ALBERT
He's Noah Tafolla. Don't you find
the singer more interesting?

                       ROSIE
No, I don't like his hair.

The song ends and David makes a stately bow as the audience
throws the band a symphony of applause.

Rosie looks on with admiration--and possibly something
else--emonationg from her eyes.

David and Noah hop down from the stage, a circuit of girls
showering them with currents of accolades as they slowly
make their way through the serried crowd towards Albert and
Rosie.

15.

                       ROSIE
I'm going to get some punch.

Before Albert can respond, Rosie stealthily glides away
through the throngs of clapping teenagers, looking back now
and then at the approaching pair.

She managers to make herself invisible, her anonymity sealed
in the midst of the kids clapping and shouting more, more...

David and Noah find Albert, who shakes their hands.

                       ALBERT
Hey, you guys, what's happenin'?

                       DAVID
Hi, Al, who's that chick you were
just with? Fine lookin', I must
say. She was givin' me the eye.
Now she's split.

                       ALBERT
Be cool, she's my niece.

                       DAVID
      (Stunned)
Niece?

                       ALBERT
Yeah, Rosie, and I don't know if
she was lookin' at you.

David, slightly stung, looks behind as if Noah didn't exist.

                       DAVID
Well, who else would she be lookin
at?

                       ALBERT
Someone else in your band.

                       DAVID
Can't be, Al. I don't have a twin
brother in the band.

                       ALBERT
      (Chuckles)
Thank God.

                       DAVID
Funny, amigo.

16.

                       ALBERT
You really wanna know who she was
checkin out?

The clapping and volts of praise ebb as Albert fixes his
eyes on Noah.

                       ALBERT
Hey, Noah, you might wanna talk to
her before she leaves.

David turns to Noah, speechless. Noah shrugs his shoulder
as a smile slowly works its way on his face. He
nonchalantly pokes his head up above the crowd.

                       NOAH
Where is she?

Albert points in the direction where she vanished.

                       ALBERT
Good luck finding her.

                       DAVID
      (Aping him)
Good luck finding her.

                       NOAH
I'll find her.

Noah disappears in the crowd in pursuit of Rosie.

                       DAVID
Well, buddy, your band is next.

Rosie scampers like a rabbit through unknown terrain through
the faceless crowd before reaching the front doors.

Noah plays the cat as he walks casually through a crowd of
admirers, mostly female, ignoring their advances as he makes
an advance of his own--right towards the front doors.

EXT. GYMNASIUM - NIGHT

A tapestry of cars is woven on the street out front. Kids
are hanging out, mostly in couples. The place is a haven
from the noisy crowd inside.

Rosie bolts out towards the tier of cars. A few beats later
Noah emerges from the doorway and stops, his eyes on Rosie.

17.

                       NOAH
      (Calling out)
Excuse me, didn't you lose this!

He produces a pencil from his pocket as Rosie looks back at
him.

Rosie blushes with a broad smile before walking back to
retrieve her pencil. She lightly takes it from Noah's hand
and examines it briefly.

                       ROSIE
This is a number three pencil. I
always use a number two.

Noah wiggles his hand in his pocket.

                       NOAH
      (Embarrassed)
I could've sworn I had the right
one.

Noah dismisses the subject.

                       NOAH
Ah, so what. C'mon inside and
dance. The next band'll be on
soon.

                       ROSIE
Yeah, in fifteen minutes.

                       NOAH
Then let's talk.

INT. GYM - NIGHT

Noah and Rosie enter the packed room. Though the cheering
has stopped, the atmosphere is certainly not like the solace
of the cool, naked outdoors.

Albert and David emerge from the crowd.

                       ALBERT
So, Rosie, are you ready to do
your song. We're up.

                       ROSIE
      (Nonplussed)
What?

18.

                       ALBERT
Don't worry, Rosie.

Albert gently takes her hand.

                       NOAH
      (Surprised)
Wait Rosie. I didn't know--

                       ALBERT
      (Ignoring Noah)
It's the only way you'll get
exposed. C'mon. They're waiting
for you. Just one song. You know
which one.

He proceeds to escort her through the crowd. The wade
through the pool of gabbing teenagers. Surprisingly,
through, they're hardly noticed as they hope onto the stage.

Albert fixes the mike, then signals to the other musicians.
He arouses everyone's attention.

                       ALBERT
      (Into mike)
Everybody, we'd like to do a song
written by my niece.

Albert gestures to Rosie.

                       ALBERT
A round of applause,
everyone--Rosie Hamlin.

The audience, caught by surprise, has no choice but to clap.
And so it does--fervently.

                       ALBERT
      (Still into mike)
The name of the song is "Angel
Baby."

A couple of beats, as the musicians man their positions.
Then the room, now quiet with wondering faces, becomes
charged with the first four chords....

INT. GYMNASIUM - LATER - NIGHT

Noah and Rosie slow daning to the Drifters, "This Magic
Monent" performed by Albert's band.

19.

                       NOAH
I could never peg you as a singer.

Rosie doesn't know what to say.

                       NOAH
You were good up there.

                       ROSIE
I almost fell off the stage.

                       NOAH
I almost did, too, the first time
I played before a crowd. After
that I wore sunglasses
until...well, I just got used to
it.

Noah grimaces.

                       NOAH
Say, Rosie?

                       ROSIE
Yeah?

                       NOAH
Did you ever learn to dance?

                       ROSIE
No, why?

                       NOAH
Because you keep stepping on my
feet.

Rosie looks down.

                       ROSIE
I'm sorry, I just--

                       NOAH
You're nervous, right?

Rosie nods demurely.

                       ROSIE
Very.

He holds her closer, despite her awkwardness.

20.

                       NOAH
Don't worry. That song...'Angel
Baby,' you wrote it yourself?

Rosie proudely nods.

                       ROSIE
Yeah.

                       NOAH
It would be a shame if it went on
unrecorded.

                       ROSIE
You really liked it?

                       NOAH
Rosie, I think our band needs a
singer.

                       ROSIE
      (Giggles)
I'll say. But I wouldn't wanna
leave Uncle Albert.

INT. GYM - LATER - NIGHT

The dance is now over, students clean up the trash left
behind. The band loads up their equipment and gets ready to
leave.

Albert walks back into the gymnasium, he approaches Noah.
Rosie and Gloria wait at the entrance and watch.

                       ALBERT
Noah, have a mintue?

David watches Noah talking to Albert.

                       NOAH
Sure.

                       ALBERT
I need a guitar player for a
record we're gonna do.

                       NOAH
You're gonna do a record?

                       ALBERT
Yeah, 'Angel Baby,' and we need a
good guitar player.

21.

David appears behind Noah.

                       DAVID
Wait a minute. Wait a minute.
Noah plays in my band.

                       ALBERT
Don't you think it's up to Noah.

Albert turns back to Noah.

                       ALBERT
What do you want to do?

Noah spots Rosie smiling at him.

                       DAVID
Choose your next words carefully.

                       NOAH
Looks like you've got yourself a
guitar player.

                       DAVID
      (Angry)
What are you talking about? Aren't
you forgetting something?

                       NOAH
What's wrong with you?

                       DAVID
After all the help I gave you.
This is how you repay me!

David pokes Noah in the chest.

                       DAVID
You can go fuck yourself.

Noah punches David hard across the face. David goes down
hard from the punch.

                       NOAH
I don't owe you anything.

Noah puts out his hand to help David up from the floor.

                       DAVID
Fuck you.

Noah punches David again as he's getting up. David hits the
ground again.

22.

                       NOAH
      (Rubbing his right
       hand)
I can do this all night.

David stands, brushes off his clothes and walks away.

                       NOAH
      (To David)
It's doesn't have to be this way.

Rosie watches and shakes her head.

Albert approaches Noah.

                       ALBERT
Are you okay?

                       NOAH
You think, you know someone.

                       ALBERT
I know you don't know our songs
yet. But I have an idea how we
can pratice and get paid for it.

                       NOAH
How are we gonna do that?

                       ALBERT
      (Wide smile)
You'll see.

INT. THE GOLDEN HORSE RESTAURANT - NIGHT

The restaurant's decorated like an old fashion western inn,
wooden tables, saw dust on the floor, etc. The people
inside are the over thirty and the music on the jukebox is
Hank Williams.

Rosie and the band enter the restaurant, the people eating
watch them pass through.

The stage is located in the bar area.

                       ROSIE
      (To Albert)
Are you sure this is the right
place?

Albert looks around.

23.

                       ALBERT
Isn't this place great. The owner
said he'd meet us here.

PAUL HALLASY(50), small, built like a barrel, he walks out
of the kitchen.

                       PAUL
How you kids doing?

Albert shakes Paul's hand.

                       ALBERT
Fine sir.

                       PAUL
You kids can get set up over there
at the edge of the kitchen doors.

Paul peeks over Albert's shoulder at the rest of the band.
Paul spots Rosie next to Noah.

                       PAUL
Is she your singer? That little
girl right there?

Paul points to Rosie.

                       PAUL
      (To Albert)
How old is she, son?

                       ROSIE
I'm twenty one sir.

                       ALBERT
Is there a problem?

                       PAUL
I doubt you're twenty-one, so
please don't let me find you
ordering drinks from the car.
      (To everyone)
That goes for the rest of you.

                       ALBERT
You got it sir.

                       PAUL
Okay then, you kids have fun
tonight.

24.

Paul goes back inside the kitchen. The band breathes a sigh
of relief.

INT. GOLDEN HORSE RESTAURANT - KITCHEN - NIGHT

The kitchen's busy and noisy, the COOKS make dinner for the
crowds packing into the dinning area. In the corner of the
kitchen, the band sits eating.

Rosie sits with a plate of food in front of her.

                       NOAH
What's wrong? Aren't you hungry?

Rosie pushes the plate away from her.

                       ROSIE
I can't, I'm too nervous.

                       NOAH
It's going to be great. Trust me.

Noah moves in closer to Rosie.

                       NOAH
Can I ask you a question?

                       ROSIE
      (Smiles)
Yeah.

                       NOAH
Are you going to eat that?

                       ALBERT
I don't believe this guy. Do you
ever stop eating?

Noah eats the food from Rosie's plate.

                       ALBERT
I've been with this guy all day.
You've been eating all day.

                       NOAH
I eat when I'm nervous.

                       ALBERT
      (Lights a
       cigarette)
Or maybe you're a pig.

25.

                       NOAH
What about you, how many
cigarettes have you smoked today?
It's like being in the car with a
freight train.

                       ALBERT
      (Blows a smoke
       ring)
I smoke because it makes me look

                       STEVEN
What? Are you kidding?

                       ALBERT
That's a good idea. This is
costing to much money, to have a
leaf raking dumb ass mess it up

                       ROBERT
Except for the sax, it wasn't bad.

                       ROSIE
Good enough for the radio?

                       ROBERT
I don't know about that.

Gloria laughs.

                       GLORIA
Why are you so scared? I've been
driving since I was seven years
old.

record with you.

                       NOAH
Why?

                       MURRY
They may want to start pressing it
right away.

                       ALBERT
It won't be a problem.

38.

The teenagers rush the sales counter ready to buy a copy of
'Angel Baby.' Rosie watches all the action at the sales
counter.

                       MURRY
You can see the kind of response
the record's getting. They all
want it.

                       ALBERT
What time do you want to meet us?

                       MURRY
Eight o'clock.

                       ALBERT

Albert pulls up in front of the hotel. Rosie, Noah, Albert,
and Gloria get out and scan the area.

                       ROSIE
This can't be the right address.
Look at this place.

                       ALBERT
This is what he wrote down.

                       GLORIA

ALICE SECKLER(30), she resembles TAMMY BAKER on a bad day.

LEROY SECKLER(40), thin, greasy hair, looks like a business
man with his briefcase and notebook.

                       MURRY
      (To everyone)
This is Leroy and Alice Seckler,
they work for Highland records.

waits for her to greet the group.

                       ALICE
It's nice to meet you.

                       LEROY
Did you bring the master with you?

                       ALBERT
Yes, we did sir. But you haven't
heard it.

                       ALICE
We trust Murry. He must have
heard something special in you.
      (To Rosie)
Are you the singer?

                       ROSIE
Yes I am.

                       LEROY
We need to get your phone number
and address.

Leroy hands the notebook to Albert, who writes down the
information in it.

                       ALICE
Do you want to give us the master.

Albert hands the record to Alice.

Alice and Leroy wait in front of the desk watching him. Sid
opens a brown paper bag next to him.

                       SID
Okay, what are you going to bother
me with today?

                       ALICE
      (Taking charge)
We have a new girl for you to
hear. The kids at the Broadway
went nuts when they couldn't buy
her record.

                       LEROY
They almost tore the place apart.

                       SID
What's the song called?

Leroy reads the label on the record.

                       LEROY
It's called Angel Baby.

41.

Sid works on a piece of cake wrapped in wax paper.

                       SID
How old is she?

                       ALICE
She looks about fifteen or
sixteen.

                       SID
The kids really like her, huh?

                       LEROY
They went for her in a big way.
She could be big if she's handled
the right way.

                       SID
      (Angry)
What? You don't think I can
handle my people right? Is that
what you think?

                       LEROY
      (Scared)
I didn't say that.
      (To Alice)
Did I say that? I didn't say
that.

Murry shrugs his shoulders at them.

42.

                       SID
Good, you're all here.
      (Pause)
I want to sign this Rosie Hamlin
to a contract.

                       ALICE
Great.

Sid hands Murry a cigar and lights it for him.

                       SID
And Murry, I'm gonna give you that
long awaited promotion, since
you're the one who found her.

Murry smiles and sucks on his cigar.

                       SID
I want her signed soon.

Sid hands Alice and Leroy a set of standard contracts from
his desk drawer.

                       SID
Leroy, you and Alice are gonna be
her managers. And Murry, I want
you to be her producer.

                       MURRY
      (Worried)
Mr. Talmadge, I don't know how to
produce records.

                       SID

Leroy to help you. I have a
feeling we have something big
here.

The living room is decorated with the finest furniture.

Gloria and Rosie walk out of the kitchen with a giant bowl
of popcorn. They both wear nightgowns. Rosie flops down on
the couch and Gloria sits on the floor.

Gloria flips on the radio that's sitting on the table in
front of her.

43.

                       GLORIA
Okay, tell me about you and Noah?

                       ROSIE
      (Smiling)
There's nothing to tell.

                       GLORIA
Oh yeah, sure. Don't lie to me, I
see the way you two look at each
other.

Gloria grabs some popcorn.

                       GLORIA
So, what's the story? Do you like
him or what?

Rosie reaches over and turns the volume up on the radio.

                       GLORIA
Do you want to go out with him or
what?

                       ROSIE
Of course I do, but he's never
asked me.

                       GLORIA
Give him some time, he'll come
around.

                       ROSIE
I just hope it's soon.

next to Rosie. Rosie jumps up and down.

                       ROSIE
Oh my God!! Oh my God!!

Gloria hugs Rosie while they keep jumping up and down. The
phone rings on the table.

                       GLORIA
      (Grabs the phone)
Hello. Yes, we have it on right
now.

Rosie pulls the phone away from Gloria's ear.

                       GLORIA
It's Albert, he wants to know if
we're listening to the radio.

                       ROSIE
      (Yells into the
       receiver)
YES WE ARE!!

                       GLORIA
Okay, I'll see you later.

Rosie keeps jumping up and down with excitement.

                       GLORIA
I don't believe this. You're
gonna be famous.

Rosie stops jumping.

INT. HAMLIN HOUSE - BEDROOM - DAY

out of his car and lights a cigar.

Noah a three page contract.

The band members are excited. There's a knock at the front
door.

ALDELLA TAFOLLA(35), slim, and pretty, Noah's mother,
answers the front door.

ANTONIO RENTAS(30), tall, dressed in an expensive three
piece suit.

                       ALDELLA
Mr. Cohan, our lawyer is here.

                       ANTONIO
I got here as soon as you called.

                       NOAH
      (To Rosie)
This is Antonio Rentas, he's our
lawyer. He's going to go over the
contracts.

Noah hands Antonio his contract. Antonio flips through the
pages.

                       MURRY
I want you to know, these
contracts are perfectly legal.

                       ANTONIO
Well, I'll see about that.

Antonio reads the contract. Murry watches closely.

                       MURRY
      (To everyone)
I'll tell you what. I'll give a
hundred dollar bill to everyone
who signs their contracts now.

Murry pulls out a roll of money from his pants pocket. He
counts out the money.

                       ANTONIO
I want to talk to the head of
record company.

46.

                       MURRY
I don't know about that.
      (Thinks)
He's in meeting all day today.

                       ANTONIO
      (To Noah)
Don't sign these contracts, till I
talk to--
      (Reading the
       contract)
Sid Talmadge.

                       MURRY
Highland wanted you go play at one
of our concerts. But, if you
don't sign the contracts. I don't
know if you will be able to play.

                       ANTONIO
Can they play a concert without a
written contract?

                       MURRY
Uh, I guess so, they will need to
sign something to play.

                       ANTONIO
Can you put something together?

                       MURRY
I'll make up something.

EXT. UNITED ARTIST THEATER - DAY

The marquee reads, 'Jackie Wilson, The Olympics, The Johnny
Otis band, The Safaris, and Rosie and the Originals'

The theater's parking lot is peppered with cars belonging to
the members of the different bands. Alice drives up in her
new car and parks.

Rosie steps out.

                       ROSIE
Noah said he'd be here.

Rosie searches the parking lot.

                       ROSIE
I don't see his car.

47.

                       ALICE
Why don't you go inside and I'll
wait for Leroy and Noah out here.

                       ROSIE
If you see Noah, tell him where I
am.

                       ALICE
Okay sweetheart. Whatever you
say.

Rosie walks inside the theater. As soon as she's out of
sight. Noah pulls into the parking lot.

Noah rushes out of the car and grabs his guitar case, he
runs up to Alice.

                       ALICE
Noah, wait a minute. Where do you
think you're going?

                       NOAH
Why? What's wrong?

                       ALICE
Leroy and myself were thinking
that this band needs a
professional guitar player.

                       NOAH
What? What are you talking about?

                       ALICE
Noah, I think you should sit this
concert out.

                       NOAH
Your kidding right?

                       ALICE
No, I'm not. You have a big
influence on Rosie, she really
doesn't know what a professional
band needs.

                       NOAH
Did you talk to Rosie about all
this?

                       ALICE
She doesn't know about any of
this. I'll tell her we're
replacing you with another guitar
            (MORE)

48.

                       ALICE (cont'd)
player.

Noah scans the parking lot.

                       ALICE
Rosie's already inside. Your
replacement's on his way.

Leroy drives up and parks next to them. He approaches Noah
and Alice with a young man carrying a guitar case.

The GUITAR PLAYER(21), tall and slim. He puts out his
cigarette on the floor.

                       GUITAR PLAYER
Hello everyone.

Noah glares at the Guitar Player.

                       NOAH
Does he even know the songs?

                       LEROY
I guess you gave him the news?

                       NOAH
Yeah, she gave me the news, and
it's fucken bullshit.

                       LEROY
      (To the Guitar
       Player)
Go ahead and go inside, we need to
talk to Noah. It's okay, go
inside.

                       NOAH
I don't believe this shit. I want
to talk to Rosie.

                       LEROY
Noah, we don't have time for this.
We have a concert to put on.

Alice opens the back door entrance to the theater. Just
inside the theater stands an elderly SECURITY GUARD.

                       ALICE
I want you to keep this person out
of the theater.

Alice points out Noah to the Security Guard.

49.

                       NOAH
I don't fucking believe this!

Leroy walks into the theater behind Alice. Noah stands
alone in the parking lot.

EXT. UNITED ARTIST THEATER - DAY

Noah sits on the curb in front of the theater. A shadow
falls on Noah.

Noah glances up.

NAT TARNOPOL(40), handsome, well dressed, he smiles at Noah.

                       NAT
What are you doing kid. Why
aren't you inside getting ready to
play?

                       NOAH
How did you do that? How did you
know I played.

Nat laughs.

                       NAT
You look like a musician that's
why. The guitar case next to you
was my next clue.

Noah looks at the guitar case.

                       NAT
You look like you need some help.

INT. UNITED ARTIST THEATER - STAGE AREA - DAY

The stagehands are busy doing last minute touch up's on the
lighting. Rosie paces the stage and watches the doors.

The new Guitar Player tunes up his guitar. Rosie shoots an
angry glance at Leroy and Alice. Rosie storms at them ready
to tear them apart.

                       ROSIE
I'll tell you right now. I'm not
gonna sing without Noah.

Leroy and Alice roll their eyes.

50.

                       LEROY
Rosie, you don't need him. We
found you a better guitar player.
A pro. This is what you're band
needs.

                       ROSIE
That's what you said when you got
rid of my Uncle Albert. I don't
think I want to become a famous
singer.

                       ALICE
I understand, but you need to
grow. If you don't like how you
do tonight. You won't have to
sing and you can go back to your
old life.

                       LEROY
What? Let's talk about this
first.

                       ALICE
      (Clamly)
No, it's up to Rosie.

                       ROSIE
Okay, that sounds fair.

Nat Tarnopol walks onto the stage area followed by Noah.

                       NAT
Who doesn't want this kid to play
his guitar?

                       LEROY
It doesn't have anything to do
with you.

                       NOAH
They don't want me in the band. I
don't understand what I did wrong?

                       ALICE
This is a Highland record company
decision, we work for Highland
records.

                       NOAH
Rosie and I don't work for
Highland, remember, we didn't sign
your contracts.

51.

                       ALICE
      (Hiding her anger)
Fine, hey, you Guitar Player, take
a hike.

                       GUITAR PLAYER
Hey!

                       NAT
Don't worry, I'll talk to Sid
about this. Why don't we talk and
let the kids get ready for their
concert.

Rosie and Noah watch Nat walk Leroy and Alice off the stage.

                       NAT
Don't worry kids, it's going to
okay. Have fun tonight.

                       NOAH
Thank you, Mr. Tarnopol.

INT. ROSIE'S DRESSING ROOM - NIGHT

The dressing room's no bigger then a prison cell. Rosie
checks her hair in the lighted mirror. Stagehands rush pass
the opened door.

JACKIE WILSON(25), tall, handsome, he stands at the doorway
watching Rosie. Rosie spots Jackie Wilson in the mirror.

                       ROSIE
May I help you?

                       JACKIE WILSON
I just wanted to know who this
pretty little girl is?

                       ROSIE
My name is Rosie. Rosie Hamlin.

                       JACKIE WILSON
I'm Jackie. Jackie Wilson.

                       ROSIE
      (Excited)
You're Jackie Wilson. I don't
believe this. You're Jackie
Wilson.

52.

                       JACKIE WILSON
I love your song.
      (Singing like
       Rosie)
'My Angel Baby, ooh ooh I love
you.'

Rosie giggles.

                       JACKIE WILSON
How do you hit those high notes?

                       ROSIE
I don't know.

Noah rushes into the dressing room, he almost knocks over
Jackie Wilson.

                       ROSIE
Noah, will you be more careful. I
want you to meet Jackie Wilson.

                       NOAH
      (Excited)
Oh my God. I love your music.

                       JACKIE WILSON
Well, thank you.

A STAGEHAND enters the dressing room.

                       STAGEHAND
Five minutes Originals.

                       ROSIE
That's us.

                       JACKIE WILSON
Are you nervous?

                       ROSIE
Not yet.

INT. UNITED ARTIST THEATER - BACKSTAGE AREA - NIGHT

Alice leads Leroy by the hand to a quiet spot away from all
the activity. Alice puts her finger on Leroy's chest.

                       LEROY
      (Moves Alice's
       finger)
What's your problem?

53.

                       ALICE
Noah's my problem. I want him
gone.

                       LEROY
We already tried, remember? We
might as well give him a try.

                       ALICE
We also agreed that we could
control Rosie better without him.
And he made me look bad. No one
does that and gets away with it.

Alice pokes Leroy in the chest with her finger.

                       LEROY
I'm not gonna have anything to do
with this. Just let the kids
play.

                       ALICE
No.

                       LEROY
You do this, and you're doing it
on your own.

Leroy walks away. Alice spots Murry standing around getting
in the way of all the stagehands. Murry sees Alice waving
at him.

                       MURRY
What can I do to help out? I want
to be more of a producer.

Alice looks at Murry closely.

                       ALICE
Murry, come over here, and I'll
tell you what you can do.

Alice puts her arm around Murry.

                       ALICE
I'll teach you everything you need
to know. Let's take a walk.

Alice and Murry walk away.

54.

INT. UNITED ARTIST THEATER - NIGHT

The theater's filled with screaming teenagers waiting for
the curtain to open. A bright light shines from behind the
curtain to revile the band walking on stage.

The crowd screams louder when the curtain goes up with Rosie
standing in front of the band. The MUSIC BULIDS UP.

Rosie sings. 'Angel Baby,'

                                         DISSOLVE TO:

INT. ROSIE'S DRESSING ROOM - NIGHT

The small room's filled with members of the band. Albert
and Gloria push through the crowd searching for Rosie and
Noah.

Albert turns to Gloria and shakes his head.

INT. STAGE - NIGHT

Rosie and Noah watch Jackie Wilson singing to the screaming
crowd.

BACKSTAGE - LATER

Jackie Wilson walks off the stage followed by the rest of
his band. Murry watches Rosie and Noah stop Jackie Wilson
as he comes off the stage.

Murry waves to Rosie, getting her attention. Rosie nods and
walks over to Murry. Jackie grabs her by the hand.

                       ROSIE
      (To Murry)
Hold on, I'll be right there.

                       JACKIE WILSON
Do you know that person?

                       ROSIE
Yeah, he's our producer.

                       JACKIE WILSON
I would watch yourself with that
person.

                       ROSIE
Why? What's wrong with him?

55.

                       JACKIE WILSON
Rosie, let me try and get you
under my management and my people.

Murry watches the conversion closely.

                       JACKIE WILSON
I'm gonna talk to Nat Tarnopol.
I'll see what I can do for you.

                       ROSIE
Okay. I'll see you later, I
guess.

Rosie turns and walks up to Murry. Jackie Wilson watches.

                       MURRY
You know Jackie Wilson? Why is he
looking at me like that?

                       ROSIE
I don't know, why don't you go ask
him.

                       MURRY
What did he tell you?

                       ROSIE
He just wanted to tell me how much
he enjoyed the show.

                       MURRY
That was it?

                       ROSIE
That was it.

INT. BACKSTAGE - NIGHT

Nat Tarnopol walks towards Jackie Wilson.

                       JACKIE WILSON
That Rosie's a real fine singer,
don't you think so?

                       NAT
She sounds like everyone else.

                       JACKIE WILSON
Why don't you sign her to
Brunswick? You could make her a
star.

56.

                       NAT
She's already signed with
Highland. It looks like she's on
her way to being a star.

                       JACKIE WILSON
She needs someone to lead her in
the right direction. Not the
goons that run Highland.

                       NAT
      (Laughs)
Goons run Highland. I guess I
could talk to Sid. Maybe I can
get him to sell her contract to
me.

                       JACKIE WILSON
That would be great.

INT. SID TALMADGE OFFICE - NIGHT

Sid reads from a file on his desk. The door to the office
opens. Nat steps inside the office.

                       SID
Why don't you come in.

                       NAT
Thank you.

                       SID
What's so important to get me here
in the middle of the night?

                       NAT
Rosie and the Originals.

                       SID
What about them.

Nat sits in front of the desk. He reaches over and opens
the wooden cigar box on the desk.

                       SID
Please, help yourself.

Nat lights the cigar.

                       NAT
Thank you.

57.

                       SID
Cut the bullshit. What do you
want with Rosie Hamlin?

                       NAT
I want to sign her to Brunswick. I
know you don't have her signed
yet.

                       SID
Get out.

                       NAT
How about this--

                       SID
No.

                       NAT
Hear me out. What about Highland
gets the profits from the concerts
and Brunswick gets the profits
from the record sales?

                       SID
I don't get it? Why her?

                       NAT
What do you mean?

                       SID
What is it about this girl? Do
you want to get into her skirt or
something?

                       NAT
It's nothing like that. Don't get
me wrong, I'd fuck the shit out of
that. But she's too young for me.

                       SID
In a month, no one will know who
Rosie and the Originals were.
      (Thinks)
I really can't believe I'm about
to do this. Okay, you have a
deal. But, my people stay with
her.

                       NAT
What people?

58.

                       SID
Murry Cohan, Leroy and Alice
Seckler. They found her, they've
been with her from the start.

                       NAT
Deal.

                       SID
I'll let them know what's going
on.

Nat and Sid stand and shake hands to the deal.

INT. BRUNSWICK RECORDS - NAT TARNOPOL'S OFFICE - DAY

Rosie signs a four page contract on Nat's desk. Nat shakes
Rosie's hand. Rosie hugs Noah, Gloria, and Albert.

Leroy and Alice watch from the back of the office with wide
smiles on their faces.

                       NAT
Rosie, we are happy you've made
Brunswick your home. We want you
and Noah to go to New York to cut
an album. You do have enough
songs to do an album, don't you?

Rosie turns to Noah, he nods his head.

                       ROSIE
Yes, we do.

                       NAT
Great. I guess you're all off to
New York.

                       ROSIE
Excuse me, I have one question?

                       NAT
What's that?

                       ROSIE
What happen to the contract we
were going to sign with Highland?

                       NAT
You don't have to worry about
that. Think of this contract as
having the best of both companies.

59.

                       ROSIE
I don't understand.

                       NAT
You keep your managers from
Highland and you make records for
Brunswick.

EXT. JET AIRLINER - DAY

The Constellation one of the first jet airlines flies across
the country.

INT. AIRLINER - DAY

Rosie sits next to Noah, she sips her Coke. Alice and Leroy
sit behind them.

A FLIGHT ATTENDANT places a tray of food in front of Noah.

                       NOAH
Thank you.

                       FLIGHT ATTENDANT
      (To Rosie)
Would you like to order lunch now?

                       ROSIE
No, thank you.

                       ALICE
      (Rudely)
I would like to order now please.

The Flight Attendant rolls her eyes and turns to Alice.

                       NOAH
I hope you don't turn to skin and
bones on me. You never eat in
front of me. I don't get it, do
you make a pig of yourself or
what?

Rosie giggles.

                       NOAH
I made her laugh. I don't believe
it.

Rosie puts her head down and laughs to herself.

60.

                       ROSIE
I just wish Albert and Gloria
could have come with us.

Noah takes Rosie's hand.

                       ROSIE
I'm so nervous, all I did was sing
a song.

                       NOAH
Sometimes that's all it takes.

                       ROSIE
And are you a little nervous?

Noah looks out the window of the plane.

                       NOAH
I'm scared out of my pants. Try
and enjoy the ride and stop
starving yourself.

                       ROSIE
Okay.

ANGLE ON AIRLINER

MONTAGE OF SCENES:

The jetliner lands at Liguria Airport and taxis up to the
airport.

Rosie and Noah look out the window of the taxi as they speed
through the downtown area of the city. The taxi stops in
front of a high rise building.

The taxi takes them down through Time Square. Rosie sticks
her head out of the window of the taxi to take all the
sights and sounds in.

The taxi pulls up to the front of the Plaza Hotel and stops.
Rosie gets out of the cab and seems overwhelmed by all the
sights and sounds of the city.

INT. PLAZA HOTEL - LOBBY - DAY

INT. HOTEL ROOM - DAY

The doors swing open to a hotel room that's as big as an
apartment. Rosie puts her bags down. She watches the
BELLBOY pick up her bag and put it in the bedroom.

On the table in the room is a basket filled with fruit.
Rosie pulls the card from the basket.

--INSERT, 'Enjoy your stay in New York, Miss Hamlin, Nat
Tarnopol'

Noah enters the room.

                       NOAH
Isn't this great? How about this
room?

                       ROSIE
It's incredible.

Leroy passes by the room, he stops and walks in.

                       LEROY
We have two hours before we go to
the studio.
      (Thinks)
I would use that time to rest up
from the trip.

                       ROSIE
Okay.

                       NOAH
You think we'll have time to see
New York?

                       LEROY
This isn't a vacation. You're
here to make a record. If you
want to come back here, you can do
what ever you want.

                       NOAH
Sorry, I just thought since we are
already here.

                       LEROY
      (Calms down)
We'll see, after the recording
session.

Leroy leaves the room.

62.

                       ROSIE
That usually means no.

INT. BRUNSWICK RECORDING STUDIO - DAY

The studio's modern for the early sixties. Leroy leads the

PAT ANDERSON(30), short, bald, he shakes hands with Rosie.
Paul's the recording engineer.

The studio's filled with new instruments.

                       PAT
Let's get them set up and make
some music.

Leroy gets up off his chair and stands behind Pat.

                       LEROY
Yeah, get them set up.

Pat turns and glares at Leroy.

                       PAT
Okay, let's do it.

Pat points to Rosie. Rosie sings: Lonely Blue Nights. Rosie
starts the second verse to the song.

                       PAT
Hold it! Sorry Rosie. I'm
getting to much feed back in here.
Let's try it again, okay.

Rosie turns to Noah, who shakes his head.

63.

Alice was watching me like
somekind of bulldog.

                       NOAH
What do you think of my taxi?

The 80 year old DRIVER of the taxi tips his top hat to
Rosie.

                       ROSIE
This is so neat.

                       ROSIE
What are we gonna do about the
album?

How many songs do we need?

                       ROSIE
About seven.

                       NOAH
You mean to tell me, you don't
have seven songs in that notebook
of yours?

                       ROSIE
Maybe, about three, but what about
the other four? They except seven
songs by tomorrow.

night, we can crank out four songs
tonight.

noodles.

                       CHINESE WAITRESS
No, no, you hold like this.

Rosie holds the chop sticks in the correct manner.

                       CHINESE WAITRESS
Ah good, see, now you eat. Now
you expert.

Rosie tries to grab noodles from the bowl, the noodles slip
between her chop sticks. The Chinese Waitress and Noah
laugh.

                       ROSIE
Oh well.

Noah flips the chop sticks around his fingers like a pro. He
digs into the bowl of rice and eats with no problem. Rosie
watches Noah in amazement as he eats.

                       ROSIE
You don't have to show off.

Rosie.

                       ROSIE
I can't believe how beautiful this
city is at night.

                       NOAH
It makes me miss San Diego.

Wait a minute, we can't go to bed
yet.

                       ROSIE
      (Yawns)
Why not.

                       NOAH
Four more songs, remember?

                       ROSIE
The songs, oh no.

                       NOAH
I'll get my guitar and we can try
out some of your ideas.

The door to Alice's room opens.

                       ALICE
What the hell are you doing up
still?

Noah and Rosie jump at the sound of Alice's voice.

                       NOAH
We have to come up with a couple
of songs.

                       ALICE
I thought you had enough songs for
the album?

                       ROSIE
We came up a little short.

Alice walks up to Rosie.

                       ALICE
How short?

                       ROSIE
About four.

                       ALICE
      (Angry)
What?!! Are you both crazy?!!

people trying to sleep.

                       NOAH
Keep your voice down.

Alice looks like she's ready to spontaneity com-bust.

                       NOAH
Don't worry. We can come up with
the songs by morning.

                       ALICE
You better come up with something
by nine.
      (Checks her watch)
You have about six hours.

                       ROSIE
That's plenty of time, if we get
started now.

Rosie and Noah smile at Alice.

                       ALICE
I don't like this, but I don't
have a choice.

                       NOAH
I'll get my guitar.

Noah rushes to his room and opens the door.

                       ALICE
      (To Rosie)
How dare you sneak out on me.

                       ROSIE
We went out and had dinner. The
world didn't come to an end.

Noah rushes back out of his room holding his guitar case.

                       NOAH
Okay, I'm ready. And don't worry,
by eight we'll be ready to rock
and roll.

                       ALICE
Where are you going to work on
these songs?

71.

                       NOAH
We can work down in the lobby.

                       ALICE
Okay, go ahead. But, I am not
gonna forget this.

                       ROSIE
      (Smiles)
Either will I.

                       ROSIE
We're done. I don't believe it.

Rosie, she's asleep in her chair.

doctor to enter.

Noah goes through the door and up to the NURSE'S STATION.
One NURSE sits doing paperwork.

                       NOAH
Excuse me, can you tell me how my
wife Rosie Tafolla is doing,
please.

The Nurse checks a chart in front of her.

88.

                       NURSE
The doctors are still with her.
We'll let you know.

                       NOAH

Noah goes back to the waiting room.

                       AUNT SOKIE

                       NOAH
No. She said the doctors are
still with her.

                       OFILIA
Can you just shut up. She's gonna
be okay.

Ofilia wipes tears away from her eyes.

                       AUNT SOKIE
She's gonna be alright.

We can now see that Rosie's still pregnant.

                       AUNT SOKIE
I'm just happy that baby is doing
okay. When you get home, you need
to get some rest. You got that?

                       ROSIE
      (Off of look on
       her face)
I got it.

A NURSE opens the door and pushes a wheelchair into the
room.

                       NURSE #2
Okay, are you ready to go?

89.

                       ROSIE
I can walk. It's no problem.

                       NURSE #2
Hospital policy, you wouldn't want
me to loose my job would you?

                       ROSIE
Okay.

Rosie hums and snaps her fingers. She writes more down in
her notebook.

A knock at the door.

                       ROSIE
Come in, it's open.

                       CHRIS
How are you feeling?

                       ROSIE
I'm better. Did you bring your

90.

Chris pulls sheets from a folder.

                       ROSIE
Guys, I think this is it.

Rosie lets out another loud moan. This sets off the band
running around like the Marxs Brothers.

                       NOAH
He's great. How are you feeling?

                       ROSIE
Like someone was trying to make a
wish with my legs.

Noah hands the baby to Rosie.

91.

                       NOAH

                       NOAH
Kind of.

                       ROSIE
What do you think of Noah?

Noah thinks for a moment.

                       NOAH
What about after my father.

                       ROSIE

Alice holds up a different outfit off the rack and shows it
to Rosie. Rosie keeps shaking her head at all the clothes
Alice shows her.

                       ALICE
Rosie, we need to make you look
more of a grown up. Like someone
who just entered college.

                       ROSIE
What's wrong with the way I dress?

Rosie looks at herself in the mirror.

                       ROSIE
I like the way I dress.

                       ALICE
We need to find something that the
college girls are wearing.

92.

                       ROSIE
But, I'm not in college.

                       ALICE
We just need to make it look like
you're older then you are.

Alice holds up a tight fitting skirt and sweater.

                       ALICE
Now, this is a nice one. Go try
it on.

Alice hands it to Rosie. Rosie curles her nose at it.

                       ROSIE
The skirt is short, and it looks
like it's gonna be tight.

                       ALICE
Just try it on.

                       ROSIE
This isn't me.

Rosie stands in front of the mirror looking at herself.

                       ROSIE
Having a baby sure wrecks your
body.

Rosie keeps looking at herself in the mirror. Rosie holds
her stomach in and looks at her chest.

                       ROSIE
But, my boobs sure did grow.

Rosie lets her small stomach back out.

93.

                       ROSIE
Maybe I should stop eating.
      (Thinks)
Nah.

                       ALICE
Well, what do you think of the
dress?

                       ROSIE
It's tight, but it alright.

                       ALICE
Good, I like it to. Now all we
have to do is find five more like
it.

Rosie shakes her head.

                       NOAH
Do you have to follow me around? I
can shop on my own.

Murry picks up a nice dress shirt. Murry puts the shirt up
to his chest to see if it will fit.

                       LEROY
We're here to find Noah some
clothes, not you.

Noah picks up a white shirt, with a tuxedo jacket.

                       LEROY

                       NOAH
So what. I like it.

                       LEROY

Leroy hands Noah a shirt and pants.

94.

Noah steps out of the dressing room, he's dressed in purple
pants and a purple flowered shirt.

                       NOAH
You're kidding right. This was a
joke.

                       LEROY
What's wrong with it?

                       NOAH
It's ugly. You don't think this
is ugly?

                       MURRY
I'd wear it. It looks great.

                       NOAH
You can't be serious.

                       LEROY
Noah, times are changing.

                       MURRY
Leroy's right, it's time your band
changes with them.

                       NOAH
Bring Rosie over here, she'll help
me pick out something to wear.

                       LEROY
I don't think so.

95.

Rosie moves her hands down the sides of the short tight
fitting skirt.

                       ROSIE

                       ALICE
Murry, find me a handsome
stagehand who wants to make a few
bucks.

                       MURRY

Noah watches closely. Noah doesn't know if the stagehand is
a fan or not.

Noah keeps watching to see what's gonna happen next. The
stagehand catches Rosie off guard and kisses her on the
lips.

Who was that she kissed?

                       NOAH
He kissed her.

                       LEROY
He must have been a fan, don't
worry about it.

Alice approaches.

                       ALICE
Did you see that guy kiss Rosie?

                       LEROY
He was a fan. A fan that got
carried away.

                       ALICE
I don't know about that. I've
seen that guy before, at another
concert.

And Alice made it sound like it

happend.

                       ROSIE
The first time what happened?

                       NOAH
Alice said she's seen that guy
before. I don't like hearing that
you've been seen with other guys.

                       ROSIE
Have you lost your mind?

                       NOAH
Why would Alice say something like
that?

                       ROSIE
I don't know. Nothing happened
just signed this guy's piece of
paper. I never saw him before. He
then grabs me and kisses me.

                       NOAH
I don't like seeing you kiss other
guys.

would never hurt you.

                       NOAH
I know.

                       ROSIE

Just like an angel.

Noah sits down.

                       NOAH
We're gonna be spending more time
with our baby boy.

                       ROSIE
We're taking a long break from

Rosie picks up Joey and cleans his face.

                       ROSIE
I missed you so much. But now, we
can spend all the time in the

                       ALDELLA
Why don't you take a trip, go on a
real vacation.

I also want to relax. We need to
get some rest.

                       ALDELLA
That sounds great. I just wonder
how long it will last?

I didn't like the idea of sending
that guy over to piss off Noah.

103.

                       ALICE
I'm trying to keep the money
coming in. So, what if I hurt his
feelings.

                       LEROY
Why can't you leave them alone. If
their happy then they'll keep
making us money.

                       ALICE
You still don't get it. If we get
rid of Noah, we can control Rosie
better.

                       LEROY
And you don't get the fact that
they are young and in love.

                       ALICE
Your problem is that you have a
conscience.

                       LEROY
And you don't have one.

                       ALICE
That's why I've been able to
survive so long in this business.

                       LEROY
Oh, give me a fuckin break. They
are on vacation for two months.
Leave them alone.

119.

                       JUDGE #2
I've read through all the briefs,
your lawyers have given me. Mr.
Tafolla wants custody of his son
and daughter.

The Judge reads a page from an open file in front of him.

                       JUDGE #2
On the grounds that his wife Rosie
Hamlin is not fit to take care of
them.

Noah nods his head.

                       JUDGE #2
Mr. Tafolla, are you going to have
help with the care of your
children?

Noah rises out of his chair.

                       NOAH
My mother is going to help me.

Antonio stands up.

                       ANTONIO
Your Honor, we feel that Mr.
Tafolia along with his mother can
better take care of his son and
daughter.

William quickly rises to his feet.

                       WILLIAM
What makes Mr. Tafolla a better
parent then Joey's and Debbie's
own mother?

                       ANTONIO
Miss Hamlin will be on the road,
never seeing her children for
weeks at a time, Mr. Tafolla
didn't like the idea of leaving
his children to go on tour.
      (Pause)
Now he wants to correct this with
getting custody of his son and
daughter.

120.

                       WILLIAM
Your honor, there son and daughter
were well taken care of during the
time they were on tour. Miss
Hamlin's Aunt watches their
children.

William points out Joey and Debbie to everyone in the court
room.

                       WILLIAM
As you can see, Joey Tafolla and
Debbie Tafolla are perfectly happy
and healthy.

Joey and Debbie sit on Aunt Sokie's lap playing with their
toys.

                       WILLIAM
Don't they look happy to you?

The Judge watches the children closely. The Judge writes
something down on a paper in front of him. The CAMERA PANS
to the clock on the wall, which reads 11:20 a.m.

                                         DISSOLVE TO:

COURT ROOM

The clock on the wall now reads, 2:00 p.m. The Judge reads
through papers given to him by William.

                       JUDGE #2
Reading through all of this. It
looks like the two of you are very
far apart with what you want.

The Judge glances at the clock.

                       JUDGE #2
I'm gonna take a twenty minute
recess.

The Judge gets up and goes into his chambers. Alice gets up
and leaves the court room. William turns to Rosie.

                       WILLIAM
I'm gonna try and find out what's
going on.

                       ROSIE
      (Worried)
Do you think something's wrong?

121.

                       WILLIAM
I don't know.

William walks back to report to Rosie. Rosie turns to Noah,
he smiles and sits back.

                       WILLIAM
His lawyer is being to nice to me.
They feel you're not going to get
custody of the children.

                       ROSIE
What do you think?

                       WILLIAM
It's hard to read the Judge. I
can't see why he wouldn't give you
custody of your own children.

COURT ROOM -- LATER

The Judge enters the court room again and sits down. Alice
rushes inside the court room. William goes through his
paperwork. The Judge is ready to speak.

                       JUDGE #2
I've made up my mind. After
reading through everything, I
awarded custody of Joey and Debbie
Tafolla to, Noah Tafolla.

Rosie and William stand up. Everyone in the court room is
shocked by the verdict, everyone except for Alice. Alice
smiles.

                       ROSIE
You can't take away my children!

                       WILLIAM
I'll file a appeal.

Antonio and Noah shake hands at the news.

                       JUDGE #2
Miss Hamlin you have two days to
give custody of your children to
Mr. Tafolla.

                       ROSIE
No, I'm not giving up my children.

Rosie grabs her children and rushes out of the court room.

Rosie turns to Alice.

                       ROSIE
What did you say?

Rosie slaps Alice across the face.

                       ROSIE

ROXANNA ARANA(18), pretty, dark hair, and full of energy.

                       ROXANNA
I'm sorry, I'm such a klutz.

Rosie puts out her hand to be shock.

                       ROSIE
My name is Rosie.

                       ROXANNA
      (Shaking hands)
My name is Roxanna, I'm a drummer.

The two woman climb into the bus.

INT. NEW MEXICO - DAY

The bus stops in front of an old run down motel. The
musicians pile out of the bus and stretch. Rosie and
Roxanna step out into the bright sunlight.

126.

The baggage compartment of the bus swings open. Rosie grabs
her small suitcase and walks towards the motel. Roxanna
also grabs her suitcase and rushes up behind Rosie.

                       ROXANNA
Aren't you nervous about tonight?

Rosie stops in her tracks.

                       ROSIE
Are you hungry? I'm starving.

                       ROXANNA
Sure.

A Diner sits next to the motel.

INT. DINER - DAY

The diner's only sounds are food being cooked and music from
the radio. Rosie and Roxanna find a small booth and sit
down.

A WAITRESS walks up from the snooze she was having and
rushes over to the two woman.

The Waitress tosses two menus at Rosie and Roxanna.

                       ROSIE
Roxanna, why are you here?

                       ROXANNA
I'm a drummer. I want to be the
first rock and roll woman drummer.
But right now, it might not be
such a good idea.

                       ROSIE
And why's that?

                       ROXANNA
Because, I'm so nervous, my
stomach hurts.

Rosie laughs.

                       ROSIE
Don't worry, that's normal. Don't
worry about it. Let's eat. Then
we'll go pratice, okay.

Roxanna nods her head.

EXT. MICKEY SHORE'S OFFICE - DAY

The bus is parked in front of the office building. Rosie
slowly walks out of the bus followed close behind by
Roxanna.

                       ROXANNA
What are you gonna do now?

Rosie keeps on walking.

128.

                       ROXANNA
Wait.

Rosie stops.

                       ROSIE
What?

                       ROXANNA
Where are you going?

Rosie thinks for a moment.

                       ROSIE
Bye Roxanna, don't worry, you'll
be fine. Your a great drummer,
and you're just gonna get better.

Roxanna watches Rosie walks down the street carrying her
small suitcase with her.

                                         FADE OUT.

FADE IN:

EXT. ED'S DINER - DOWNTOWN L.A. - 1970 - DAY

A modest structure in a sprawling stream of commercial
establishments. Knots of pedestrians promenade on the broad
sidewalk as numerous cars fleet by trying to beat rush hour.

It's like a swarming shantytown with doors open on
merchant's row to accommodate eager customers just off work.

INT. ED'S DINER - DAY

A melting pot of customers jamming the booths and stools.
Four waitresses, one of them Rosie Hamlin, each one of the
waitresses is Latin, light skin and auburn hair, have plenty
on their hands--literally.

Ed's Diner has its own traffic flow, with waitresses
rushing, plates in hand, to and from the kitchen. The song
"Satisfaction" by the Rolling Stones is playing on the
jukebox.

Rosie with a tray of food heads towards a booth. She stops
and carefully places the plates before a family of four:
mother, father, and two BOYS. Her mechanical movements
demonstrate skill at something so routine you'd swear she
could do it blindfolded.

129.

Rosie slides the plate beneath one of the Boys.

                       BOY
      (Excited)
Oh boy!

She smiles, fond memories beaming in her eyes.

                       COOK (O.S.)
      (Yelling)
Rosie, pick up!

Rosie snaps to, then rushes to the kitchen counter where a
wheel full of tickets has the cooks working in high gear.
the COOK who hollered at Rosie stands behind the counter
waiting for her, a couple plates of food between them.

                       COOK
      (Trying to keep
       his anger down)
Here, Rosie, I think these are
yours.

She stoically reaches for them with a thin smile of
defiance.

                       COOK
You know, some of us work for a
living.

A couple of waitresses rush for the wheel battling to get
their tickets in as Rosie takes off with her food.

CLOSE ON ROSIE

looking very unhappy as she walks away.

Rosie sets the plates of food down as "Satisfaction" reaches
its climax, then rushes back to the kitchen counter.

The Cook is still glaring at her as before, a plate of hot
food between them.

                       COOK
I think it's still hot. Some like
it hot, right Rosie?

She dismisses him as she marches away with her plate of
food.

ANGLE - BOOTH

130.

where GENE DAVIDSON(30), black, handsome, is seated alone.
His three-piece suit, an anomaly in a sea of casual wear,
carries the stamp of importance. Could be a VIP for all
anyone knows.

He's all manners as Rosie places his plate of food before
him, scooting everything out of the way to make room for
her. He then lays a paper napkin on his lap.

                       GENE
Thank you very much.

A sincere smile pops on Rosie's face.

                       ROSIE
It's a pleasure.

                       COOK (O.S.)
      (Shouting)
Come here.

She pauses before plodding to the kitchen where she sees the
Cook careening towards her with his arm akimbo, his eyes
boring bellicose rays through her.

                       ROSIE
Yes?

The Cook points to Gene.

                       COOK
Rosie, that customer down there.
He's all alone. Don't you know
when it's rush hour we have to
fill up the booths?

She flips a glance at Gene, then decides to take the Cook on
his own game by returning his stare. This makes him
uncomfortable, so he looks down a couple beats, barely able
to maintain eye contact.

The Cook surprised by her sudden brazenness.

                       COOK
Go find him a stool.

Her eyes remain riveted on him.

                       ROSIE
      (With a smile of
       victory)
Yes...sir!

131.

Rosie makes for Gene's booth when "Satisfaction" is replaced
by the tune "Angel Baby." She escapes into the song, her
gait slowing down as she begins singing with the words.

                       GENE
Excuse me, miss?

She's back on earth. She suddenly stops and looks around,
embarrassed. She'd bury herself beneath a booth if she
could. Her face reddens as she locks stares with Gene.

                       ROSIE
Yes sir?

He hesitates a moment.

                       GENE
You aren't by any chance...

A tense pause. Then, as he wags his finger at her:

                       GENE
Back in '65 I saw the Rolling
Stones and...Rosie and the
Originals the San Diego Stadium. I
could swear...
      (Beat)
...you're not...

Another tense pause.

                       ROSIE
Um...

Her eyes stray upward as she gropes for an answer.

                       ROSIE
Why do you ask?

Gene shrugs his shoulders.

                       GENE
Just trying to be friendly.

He offers his hand.

                       GENE
Gene Davidson.

As she reaches for his hand:

132.

                       COOK (O.S.)
      (Chiding her like
       a parent)
Rosieeeee.

She shakes his hand anyways.

                       ROSIE
Rosie Hamlin.

                       GENE
What are you doing here?

Gene hands Rosie a business card. The card reads, 'Salma
and Associates.'

                       GENE
Give me a call, alright. Your
voice shouldn't be locked up in
here.

                       COOK
Rosie!! What are you doing?! Are
you on a break?!!

                       ROSIE
      (Yelling back)
Relax!!

Rosie puts the card in her pocket.

                       ROSIE
      (To Gene)
Thank you.

INT. ROSIE'S APARTMENT - NIGHT

The door opens to a small apartment. Rosie puts her jacket
down on a chair. She takes out her mail and places it on
the table.

Rosie flips through the mail.

                       ROSIE
Bill...bill...bill, and still more
bills. Great.

Rosie reaches into her pocket and takes out Gene's card.
Rosie picks up the phone and dials the number off it.

133.

                       ROSIE
Hello, I hope it's not to late. My
name is Rosie Hamlin, the woman
you met in the diner today.

                       GENE (V.O.)
Hello, how are you?

                       ROSIE
What did you mean, when you said
my voice shouldn't be locked up?

                       GENE (V.O.)
You should be singing in front of
people and recording records.

                       ROSIE
I don't know. It's been a long
time since I've sung a note. I
need to think about it.

                       GENE
When you make your decision, give
me a call.

                       ROSIE
All right, thanks.

Rosie hands up the phone and smiles.

INT. RECORDING STUDIO - DAY

The recording studio's modern compared to the ones Rosie's
used to. Gene and Rosie look around.

The ENGINEER(25), looks like he's right out of high school,
comes out of the control room to greet Rosie.

                       ENGINEER
Hello Rosie, how have you been?
Are you ready to get back to work?

                       ROSIE
      (Smiling)
Yes.

                       GENE
Well then, let's give it a shot.

RECORDING STUDIO

Rosie waits in front of the microphone ready to sing.

134.

                       ENGINEER (O.S.)
Okay, lets try one.

The Engineer counts down from five with his hand. When he
reaches one, he points to Rosie.

                                         FADE OUT.

FADE IN:

INT. SAN DIEGO THEATER - PRESENT DAY - NIGHT

The crowd's screaming and yelling for the show to start. The
curtain goes up and the lights shine into the CAMERA.

Rosie waits in the wings. Gene walks up behind Rosie and
pats her on the back. Debbie and Joey wait next to Rosie.
They are now full grown proud adults.

INT. SAN DIEGO THEATER -STAGE - NIGHT

Rosie walks out onto the stage. Rosie turns to the band and
smiles. She turns back to the crowd of screaming fans and
sings, 'Angel Baby.'

The crowd goes crazy as we knew they would.
