THE BORROWED CHRISTMAS

FADE IN:

INT. THE ASHTON HOME - DAY

                       NARRATOR
I don't remember the Christmas of
1933, since I was only a baby. But
my grandma and grandpa talked
about it many times over the
years. That was the Christmas a
miracle happened. A series of
events took place that would soon
bring our family and the Ashton
family together for a Christmas
we'd never forget. It all started
with the piano.

Home of the ASHTON FAMILY, in the dining room, two weeks
before Christmas, about six o'clock in the evening. The
family has just finished dinner.

                       MR ASHTON
      (Patting his belly)
Well, that was a great dinner. I'm
stuffed!

                       JONATHAN
      (Mimicking his
       father's behavior
       by also rubbing
       his belly)
So am I!

                       MR ASHTON
It's almost time for our program,
Jonathan.

                       JONATHAN
It sure is!

                       MRS ASHTON
And it's time for me to get these
dishes done! Sarah would you help
me?

                       SARAH
Sure, Mom!

Everyone gets up from the table. SARAH and MRS ASHTON begin
clearing the dishes while MR ASHTON and JONATHAN move to the

living room, sit down, and begin listening to the radio
program. SARAH and her mother talk while doing the dishes.

                       SARAH
      (Drying dishes)
I miss Louisa. Is she coming home
for Christmas?

                       MRS ASHTON
      (Washing dishes)
Of course she is! She'll be here a
couple of days before Christmas.

                       SARAH
I'm glad. That means we'll all be
together for Christmas.

                       MRS ASHTON
And just think, she is graduating
in the Spring! Our Louisa is going
to be a music teacher!

                       SARAH
I know! Isn't it wonderful? I'm
going to be a music teacher too! I
love playing the piano!

                       MRS ASHTON
Well, if you keep practicing and
doing so well with your lessons,
then I think you will make a good
one!

                       SARAH
Oh, I will!

                       MRS ASHTON
You know, it's almost time for our
family tradition of having
Christmas Eve around the piano.
Have you practiced some Christmas
songs?

                       SARAH
      (Putting away the
       last of the
       dishes)
Oh yes, I have! I can't wait! It's
going to be a wonderful Christmas,
just like old times!

3.

                       MRS ASHTON
Well, I'm tired. How about you?
Let's go join your father and
Jonathan in the living room.

The two women move to the living room to join the men
listening to the radio program.

                       MRS ASHTON
      (Sighing as she
       sits down)
Sure is good to sit down for a
while.

                       MR ASHTON
Glad you could join us!

                       SARAH
Hey, I love this program. Turn it
up please!

They sit listening for a minute or two, then as the program
ends, MR ASHTON turns the radio off.

                       MRS ASHTON
Sarah and I were just talking
about Louisa coming home, and how
we are looking forward to this
year's Christmas Eve around the
piano.

                       SARAH
Yes, and I've been practicing
Christmas songs!

                       MR ASHTON
      (Sighing)
Well, there's something I need to
tell you all.

                       MRS ASHTON
What...is there...something wrong?

                       MR ASHTON
I've been doing some thinking.
Since I lost my job at the
factory, there hasn't been enough
money to make ends meet.

                       SARAH
Wh..What are you saying, Dad?

4.

                       MR ASHTON
We need a little extra money to
help us until I can get another
job. So, as much as I hate to do
it, I've decided we're going to
have to sell the piano.

                       SARAH
But Dad!

                       MRS ASHTON
But what about singing Christmas
songs around the piano? We've
always done that!

                       MR ASHTON
We'll just have to celebrate
Christmas without the piano this
year. I'm sorry, but I just don't
know what else to do.

                       SARAH
      (Starting to cry)
But Dad, you just can't sell the
piano. You know what it means to
all of us!

                       MR ASHTON
I'm sorry, Sarah. We need the
money.

                       SARAH
      (Stands up, still
       crying)
I can't believe it! All that
practicing for nothing! Some
Christmas this is going to be!

Sarah storms off to her room crying.

                       JONATHAN
      (Walking out)
Yeah, some Christmas this is going
to be. So much for family
tradition.

                       MRS ASHTON
Well, I don't know what we'll tell
Louisa. I guess it's just what we
have to do. But I'm just so
disappointed for the children.
They've always looked forward to
this every year.

5.

                       MR ASHTON
I know. But we still have each
other. And we'll get through this
somehow.

                       MRS ASHTON
I hope so.

                       MR ASHTON
Let's get some sleep.

Scene ends with MR ASHTON putting his arm around his wife
and the two of them walking out together.

INT. THE ASHTON HOME - NIGHT

THE FOLLOWING EVENING

                       NARRATOR
Like so many other families who
had gone through the Depression in
those days, the Ashtons had found
themselves having to make some
sacrifices. But isn't it amazing,
how God always seems to know what
we need, and intervene at just the
right time?

After dinner. MR ASHTON and JONATHAN are sitting in the
living room listening to the evening radio program. MRS
ASHTON is making Christmas cookies. SARAH is sitting at the
kitchen table making Christmas decorations for the tree.

                       MRS ASHTON
      (Taking the last
       batch of cookies
       out of the oven)
Sarah, those decorations are
coming along nicely. They're very
pretty.

                       SARAH
      (Glumly)
Thanks, Mom.

                       MRS ASHTON
      (Wipes hands on
       her apron, walks
       over and sitts
       down beside SARAH
       & puts her hand
       on her shoulder)
Oh, come on now, what's wrong
            (MORE)

6.

                       MRS ASHTON (cont'd)
dear?

                       SARAH
Well, it's just not going to be
the same, you know, without the
piano this Christmas.

                       MRS ASHTON
I know. But we'll just have to
work together and be thankful for
what we have this Christmas.

                       SARAH
But it's just hard, mother.

                       MRS ASHTON
It's hard for a lot of people
these days. And you know, there
are a lot of people who are worse
off than we are.

                       SARAH
I guess you're right, Mom.

                       MRS ASHTON
      (Smiling)
Of course I am. Now why don't you
go play some Christmas songs while
we still have the piano. It will
make you feel better.

                       SARAH
      (Getting up from
       the table,
       smiling)
You know, you're right! I think I
will do just that, as soon as I
put up these decorations!

                       MRS ASHTON
      (Getting up from
       table)
That's better! As a matter of
fact, I have an idea!

MRS ASHTON walks over to put the cookies on a large plate,
then carries them to the living room while SARAH puts the
decorations she made on the tree.

                       MRS ASHTON
      (Putting the
       cookies down on
       the coffee table
            (MORE)

7.

                       MRS ASHTON (cont'd)
       then sitting down
       on the couch)
Christmas cookies, everyone!

                       MR ASHTON
      (Reaching for a
       cookie)
Wow, they look delicious!

                       JONATHAN
      (Taking two
       cookies at once)
Mmm, these are good!

                       SARAH
      (sitting down to
       have some cookies)
How would you know? You eat them
so fast!

                       MRS ASHTON
      (Smiling at SARAH)
Now, I think Sarah is going to
play us some Christmas songs!

                       MR ASHTON
      (Turning off the
       radio)
As a matter of fact, while we
still have the piano, why don't we
just have our Christmas around the
piano tonight?

                       SARAH
But what about Louisa? She's going
to miss it!

                       LOUISA
      (Suddenly bursting
       in unexpectedly,
       carrying a few
       gifts)
Miss what?

                       SARAH
      (Going over to
       help her with her
       packages)
Louisa, you're home!

Everyone gets up and begins crowding around LOUISA, hugging
her, excited that she is home from college early.

8.

                       JONATHAN
You're home early!

                       LOUISA
Well, I finished my exams early.
Oh, I have missed you all so much!
I am just so glad to be home for
Christmas!

                       MRS ASHTON
      (Taking LOUISA'S
       coat)
We were just getting ready to sing
Christmas songs around the piano.

                       LOUISA
Wonderful! But I thought we
usually do that on Christmas Eve.

                       MR ASHTON
Louisa dear, sit down for a
moment. There's something we need
to tell you.

Louisa sits down on the couch.

                       MRS ASHTON
Louisa, since your father lost his
job, there's just not been enough
money to make ends meet. So he has
decided we're going to have to
sell the piano.

There is a moment of silence. Then LOUISA finally speaks.

                       LOUISA
That's alright, Dad. I know it's
been hard for you. And we'll make
it somehow. God always provides a
way.

                       MR ASHTON
I'm glad you understand. And yes,
we will make it through this!

                       MRS ASHTON
Yes, we will. Like I said before,
there are folks worse off than we
are.

                       LOUISA
That's right! So let's sing some
Christmas songs! I'll play first!
I want you to hear what I've been
            (MORE)

                       LOUISA (cont'd)
practicing!

The family moves over to the piano. LOUISA sits down and
begins playing "IT CAME UPON A MIDNIGHT CLEAR" as everyone
sings along:

IT CAME UPON THE MIDNIGHT CLEAR,
THAT GLORIOUS SONG OF OLD,
FROM ANGELS BENDING NEAR THE EARTH
TO TOUCH THEIR HARPS OF GOLD:
"PEACE ON THE EARTH, GOOD WILL TO MEN,
FROM HEAVEN'S ALL-GRACIOUS KING."
THE WORLD IN SOLEMN STILLNESS LAY,
TO HEAR THE ANGELS SING.

Everyone clapping as song ends

                       MRS ASHTON
That was wonderful, Louisa! You
have learned very well!

                       LOUISA
Thank you! Now, you play one,
Sarah!

LOUISA gets up and SARAH sits down and begins to play "DECK
THE HALLS WITH BOUGHS OF HOLLY" as everyone sings along:

DECK THE HALLS WITH BOUGHS OF HOLLY,
FA LA LA LA LA, LA LA LA LA.
'TIS THE SEASON TO BE JOLLY,
FA LA LA LA LA, LA LA LA LA.
DON WE NOW OUR GAY APPAREL,
FA LA LA, LA LA LA, LA LA LA.
TROLL THE ANCIENT YULE TIDE CAROL,
FA LA LA LA LA, LA LA LA LA

                       LOUISA
      (Looks up,
       listening)
Wait a minute! Everyone listen! Do
you hear that?

                       MRS ASHTON
Hear what? ...Oh, yes, I hear it!

                       SARAH
It's Christmas carolers!

10.

                       JONATHAN
Christmas Carolers! I thought I
heard something! Let's go and see
them!

Everyone moves quickly to the front door as MR ASHTON opens
it. CHRISTMAS CAROLERS are outside singing "JOY TO THE
WORLD". They walk out onto the front porch. As the carolers
continue singing, the family begin to put their arms around
one another, smiling and singing along.

JOY TO THE WORLD! THE LORD IS COME.
LET EARTH RECEIVE HER KING
LET EVERY HEART
PREPARE HIM ROOM
AND SAINTS AND ANGELS SING
AND SAINTS AND ANGELS SING
AND SAINTS AND SAINTS AND ANGELS SING

JOY TO THE WORLD, THE SAVIOUR REIGNS
LET SAINTS THEIR SONGS EMPLOY
WHILE FIELDS AND FLOODS
ROCKS, HILLS AND PLAINS
REPEAT THE SOUNDING JOY
REPEAT THE SOUNDING JOY
REPEAT, REPEAT, THE SOUNDING JOY

The carolers go directly into singing "WE WISH YOU A MERRY
CHRISTMAS":

WE WISH YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS;
WE WISH YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS;
WE WISH YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR.
GOOD TIDINGS WE BRING TO YOU AND YOUR KIN;
GOOD TIDINGS FOR CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR.

While they are singing, MRS ASHTON goes back into the house,
and comes back out with a plate of the Christmas cookies for
the carolers.

                       CHRISTMAS CAROLERS
      (All at once,
       waving as they
       leave)
Thank you, and Merry Christmas!

The family stands there for a moment after the carolers
leave, their arms still around one another.

                       LOUISA
It's almost as if God sent them
here tonight.

11.

                       SARAH
You know, I think you're right!

                       MRS ASHTON
God knows what we need when we
need it!

                       MR ASHTON
He sure does! And I know He's
going to see us through.

                       JONATHAN
      (Rubbing his belly)
And I'm ready for some more
cookies!

                       MR ASHTON
Yes, and how about some hot apple
cider to go with them?

                       MRS ASHTON
That's a great idea! I'll go and
get it started!

Scene ends with family going back into the house.

INT. THE ASHTON HOME - DAY

THE NEXT DAY

                       NARRATOR
It wasn't easy for the Ashtons,
giving up traditions that had been
in their family for years. But it
didn't take them long to realize
how much they really had to be
thankful for. And it was in one of
their lowest moments that they
soon realized how blessed they
really were.

After breakfast. Family is relaxing in the living room. MR
ASHTON and JONATHAN are preparing to take the piano out and
take it to town to sell it.

                       MR ASHTON
      (Wiping his mouth
       and pushing away
       from the table)
Well, breakfast was wonderful,
dear. Jonathan, I guess we'd
better get that piano loaded onto
the truck if we're going to get it

to town.

                       JONATHAN
Alright, Dad. I'll get my coat.

MR ASHTON leans down and gives his wife a quick kiss on the
cheek, then he and JONATHAN carry the piano out to load it
onto the truck and leave for town, while MRS ASHTON, LOUISA,
AND SARAH stand watching.

                       SARAH
      (Clasping hands
       together sadly)
Oh, how I do hate to see it go!

                       LOUISA
I have a lot of fond memories
attached to that old piano.

                       MRS ASHTON
      (Putting her arms
       around both girls)
We all do. I'll miss it too. But
this hasn't been easy for your
father either.

                       LOUISA
Mother's right. We can still count
our blessings in other ways this
Christmas.

                       SARAH
That's right. Like she said, there
are lots of folks worse off than
we are.

                       LOUISA
      (Clasping her
       hands together
       excitedly)
I have the perfect idea! Let's get
out the old Christmas decorations
from last year and decorate the
house and surprise them.

                       MRS ASHTON
What a wonderful idea! I'll go and
get them!

                       SARAH
I'll help you!

13.

The women leave and return carrying boxes of decorations.
They are almost finished decorating the house when the men
return.

                       MR ASHTON
      (Walks in and
       looks around and
       smiles)
Well, what a wonderful surprise!

                       JONATHAN
      (Looking around
       smiling as well)
It's actually starting to look
like Christmas around here!

                       LOUISA
And I think Sarah's decorations
she made look pretty on the tree.

                       MR ASHTON
Well, I have a little money to
help us through Christmas. There's
enough to get everyone a little
something, but we'll have to save
what we can until I can find work.

                       MRS ASHTON
Well, we'll just take what we have
and be thankful for it and make
the best of it.

                       JONATHAN
It's alright, Dad. We understand.

                       LOUISA
Yes Dad, this is a time for
families to work together...

                       SARAH
...And be thankful for what we
have!

                       MRS ASHTON
I couldn't agree more! After all,
it is Christmas!

                       JONATHAN
Yes, and we can't forget what
Christmas is really all about!

14.

                       MR ASHTON
      (Reaches his arms
       out to entire
       family, so that
       they lean
       together, looking
       around and
       smiling)
You know, we may have a slim
Christmas this year, but if we
look hard enough, we can see the
ways God has blessed us!

                       LOUISA
You're so right Dad! We truly are
blessed in so many ways that we
really don't think about.

                       JONATHAN
Yes, we are! We just have to look
around and see them!

                       MR ASHTON
Merry Christmas, everyone!

All ad lib at once: "Merry Christmas!" Scene ends with the
family still leaning together in a family hug, smiling and
looking around at the decorations.

INT. THE ASHTON HOME - NIGHT

NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS EVE

                       NARRATOR
It was during the face of their
hardships, as Christmas drew
closer, that God began to use it
all as a kind of mirror, shining
the light of His word on them all,
almost as if He was preparing them
for the miracle that was soon to
come.

The family has gathered in the living room by the fireplace
for the yearly family tradition of reading the Christmas
story from the Bible. Everyone is sitting around waiting for
the reading to begin.

15.

                       MR ASHTON
Well, it's time once again for our
yearly family tradition of reading
the Christmas story from the
Bible!

                       LOUISA
Oh, I look forward to this every
year!

                       SARAH
So do I! It's my favorite part of
Christmas!

                       MRS ASHTON
And it's the most important part
of Christmas, the real reason we
have Christmas. Jonathan, would
you light the candles for us
please?

                       JONATHAN
      (Getting up to
       light the candles)
Yes, Mother. Anyway, what's
Christmas without candles? I'm
just glad our family is together.
That's more than some folks have!

JONATHAN lights the candles above the fireplace and sits
back down.

                       MRS ASHTON
Thank you, Jonathan. And now let's
listen as your father reads first,
and then we'll all take turns
reading.

                       MR ASHTON
      (Opening the
       Bible, reading
       from Luke 2:1:20)
1. And it came to pass in those
days, that there went out a decree
from Caesar Augustus that all the
world should be taxed.

2. (And this taxing was first
made when Cyrenius was governor of
Syria.)

3. And all went to be taxed,
every one into his own city.

4. And Joseph also went up from
Galilee, out of the city of
Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the
city of David, which is called
Bethlehem; (because he was of the
house and lineage of David:)

                       MRS ASHTON
      (Taking the Bible
       from MR ASHTON,
       reads starting
       with the next
       verse)
5. To be taxed with Mary his
espoused wife, being great with
child.

6. And so it was, that, while
they were there, the days were
accomplished that she should be
delivered.

7. And she brought forth her
firstborn son, and wrapped him in
swaddling clothes, and laid him in
a manger; because there was no
room for them in the inn.

8. And there were in the same
country shepherds abiding in the
field, keeping watch over their
flock by night.

                       LOUISA
      (Taking the Bible
       from MRS ASHTON)
9. And, lo, the angel of the Lord
came upon them, and the glory of
the Lord shone round about them:
and they were sore afraid.

10. And the angel said unto them,
Fear not: for, behold, I bring you
good tidings of great joy, which
shall be to all people.

11. For unto you is born this day
in the city of David a Saviour,
which is Christ the Lord.

12. And this shall be a sign unto
you; Ye shall find the babe
wrapped in swaddling clothes,

lying in a manger.

                       JONATHAN
      (Taking the Bible
       from LOUISA)
13. And suddenly there was with
the angel a multitude of the
heavenly host praising God, and
saying,

14. Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace, good will
toward men.

15. And it came to pass, as the
angels were gone away from them
into heaven, the shepherds said
one to another, Let us now go even
unto Bethlehem, and see this thing
which is come to pass, which the
Lord hath made known unto us.

16. And they came with haste, and
found Mary, and Joseph, and the
babe lying in a manger.

                       SARAH
      (Taking the Bible
       from JONATHAN)
17. And when they had seen it,
they made known abroad the saying
which was told them concerning
this child.

18. And all they that heard it
wondered at those things which
were told them by the shepherds.

19. But Mary kept all these
things, and pondered them in her
heart.

20. And the shepherds returned,
glorifying and praising God for
all the things that they had heard
and seen, as it was told unto
them.

                       LOUISA

                       MR ASHTON
You're right, Louisa! I think we
could all do well to think more of
the real meaning of Christmas,
especially in the hard times we're
having these days.

                       MRS ASHTON
Your father is right. I think we
all need to take some time to stop
and think of what Christmas really
means to us, and how we can be
more thankful for what we have,
even though we may not have all
the things we wanted this
Christmas.

                       SARAH
Yes, and I guess I really need to
be more thankful for God's
Christmas gift to us, even if we
did have to sell that old piano. I
guess I've been really selfish.

                       JONATHAN
Yes, and I guess I've been kind of
selfish too. I've complained about
as much as anyone.

                       MR ASHTON
Well, why don't we pray right now,
and ask God to help us?

The family members all join hands and bow their heads and MR
ASHTON prays.

                       MR ASHTON
      (Bowing his head
       to pray)
Our Dear Heavenly Father, we ask
that you forgive us for being
unthankful for the wonderful gift
you gave us through your Son,
Jesus Christ, and help us to
remember the real reason we have
Christmas. We pray that somehow
you would make this Christmas
memorable in some way, even though
we did have to sell the old piano,
and even through the hard times
our family is facing right now. We

INT. THE ASHTON HOME - DAY

CHRISTMAS EVE DAY

                       NARRATOR
The hard times had drawn the
Ashtons closer together in many
ways, yet soon, in His own way,
God would use it all. Though
neither of our families knew it
yet, it would be a truly memorable
Christmas. As they sat there,
admiring their humble little
Christmas tree that Christmas Eve
day, little did they know, the
answer to their prayers was about
to coming knocking on their door.

Mid afternoon. The family is admiring the Christmas tree and
putting gifts under it.

                       MRS ASHTON
      (Standing back to
       admire the tree)
Well, for a tree with last year's
decorations, I think it looks
great.

                       SARAH
So do I!

20.

                       LOUISA
I think it's wonderful, even if we
can't afford new decorations.

                       JONATHAN
I think so too. After all, there
are some people who don't even
have a tree.

                       MR ASHTON
      (Smiling)
Well, it just needs one more
thing.

The others all look at him questioningly.

                       MRS ASHTON
Why, what on earth could that be?

                       SARAH
      (Curiously)
Yes, Daddy, do tell...

                       MR ASHTON
      (Going into the
       other room and
       bringing out
       Christmas gifts)
Well, it just so happens I found
these...

Everyone gets all excited at once.

                       SARAH
Christmas presents!

                       LOUISA
Oh how wonderful!

                       JONATHAN
We're going to have a Christmas
after all!

                       MR ASHTON
      (Putting the gifts
       under the tree)
There is one for each of you! It's
all I could afford, but it'll have
to do this time.

That's right, Daddy! I'm just glad
our family is together, and for
the blessings that we do have.

                       JONATHAN
I agree! We have so much to be
thankful for, that we don't even
think about!

                       SARAH
But what about you, Daddy? Where
is your gift?

                       MR ASHTON
      (Reaching out his
       arms to all of
       them in a family
       hug, smiling)
Oh, don't worry about me! I have
all I need right here...all of
you! Besides, I think your mother
bought me something when I wasn't
looking.

                       MRS ASHTON
      (Smiling, then
       winking at MR
       ASHTON)
Your father knows me all too well,
and he's right! We really do have
a lot more to be thankful for than
we realize.

                       LOUISA
Now there's just one more thing
our tree needs. I'll be right
back.

LOUISA goes into her room and returns with a package.

There is suddenly a knock at the door.

                       MRS ASHTON

Someone's here! I'll get it.

                       SARAH
I wonder who it could be?

Everyone follows MRS ASHTON to the door. She opens it to
find a young girl standing there.

                       MRS ASHTON
Well, hello! Won't you come in
from the cold?

                       SUZANNA
Oh, no thank you! I won't keep you
very long.

                       MR ASHTON
What can we do for you this fine
day?

                       SUZANNA
My name is Suzanna Bradshaw. We
live just down the road. My family
would like to invite you all to
come and spend Christmas Eve with
us tonight.

                       MR ASHTON
Oh, that sounds wonderful! We'd
love to come over.

                       MRS ASHTON
How nice! What time would you like
us to come?

23.

                       SUZANNA
We'd love for you all to have
Christmas Eve dinner with us as
well. It will be ready at about
six o'clock!

                       MRS ASHTON
      (Looking at JOSEPH)
I think it sounds like a lovely
way to spend Christmas Eve!

                       SUZANNA
So you'll come then?

                       MR ASHTON
Of course, we will!

                       MRS ASHTON
Yes, and I'll bring something for
dessert!

                       SUZANNA
Wonderful! I'll tell mother you're
coming! I'm sure it will be a
Christmas to remember!

                       MR ASHTON
Well, we look forward to it!

                       SUZANNA
      (Turning to go,
       waving)
Well, I've got to go now! Merry
Christmas to all of you!

                       MRS ASHTON
      (Waving back)
Merry Christmas to you all as
well!

SUZANNA walks off, and they close the door and go back into
the living room and sit down.

                       MRS ASHTON
How nice of the Bradshaws to
invite us to their house for
Christmas Eve!

Yes, I think it was very
thoughtful of them!

And I'll get my appetite ready for
all that good food!

Jonathan, your appetite's always

Well, let's see how the lights
look on the tree!

                       MR ASHTON

       turn on the
       lights)
Alright, I'll turn them on!

They sit for a moment, looking at the lights before anyone
says anything.

                       MRS ASHTON
You know, I couldn't help but
notice, there seemed to be
something strange about that girl.
I just can't put my finger on it.

                       MR ASHTON
Yes, I kind of felt that too.

                       MRS ASHTON
Did you hear what she said just
before she left?

                       MR ASHTON
What was that?

                       MRS ASHTON
You know, when she said "I'm sure
it will be a Christmas to
remember".

                       MR ASHTON
Oh yes! I noticed that.

25.

                       MRS ASHTON
I don't know how yet, but I just
have a feeling this is going to be
a memorable Christmas in some way.
I think that somehow, God has
heard our prayers.

                       MR ASHTON
I think you're right!

                       LOUISA
So do I. I can just feel it
somehow.

                       SARAH
I think so too.

                       MRS ASHTON

Well, Sarah, let's go into the
kitchen and see what we can come
up with for dessert for tonight!

Alright Mom.

                       LOUISA
I'll help too!

                       MR ASHTON

       turn the radio on)
And Jonathan and I will be

and getting our appetites ready.

Alright! Come on, girls! Let's get
started.

INT. THE BRADSHAW HOME - DAY

Christmas Eve, about six o'clock in the evening.

26.

                       NARRATOR
Although I was too small to
remember any of it, I have never
doubted the story as my parents
and grandparents told it to me.
Miracles show up in many forms.
For our two families that
Christmas Eve in 1933, it began as
an awkward Christmas Eve
gathering; yet, little did any of
them know that the events had
already begun unfolding that would
bring us a truly memorable
Christmas that none of us would
ever forget.

The Ashtons arrive at the Bradshaw home. MRS BRADSHAW is
setting the table when there is a knock at the door.

                       MRS BRADSHAW
      (Setting the table
       and hearing a
       knock at the door)
James, dear, would you see who's
at the door, please?

                       MR BRADSHAW
      (Getting up from
       his chair and
       going to the door)
Yes, dear. I wonder who it could
be!

                       MRS BRADSHAW
      (Pausing and
       looking up
       towards the door)
I don't know. We weren't expecting
anyone, although I had thought of
inviting the Ashtons over for
Christmas Eve dinner.

                       MR BRADSHAW
      (Pauses on his way
       to the door)
Oh, yes! I saw Mr. Ashton in town
the other day and he said they
were having a difficult time right
now.

MR BRADSHAW opens the door and the Ashton family is standing
there, with a chocolate cake that MRS ASHTON and the girls
have prepared for dessert.

27.

THE ASHTONS TOGETHER: "Merry Christmas!"

                       MR BRADSHAW
      (Stepping aside
       for them to come
       in)
Well, Merry Christmas to you too!
Come on inside!

                       MRS BRADSHAW
      (Taking the dish
       from ELEANOR)
Oh, what a wonderful surprise, do
come in! We were just getting
ready to have our Christmas Eve
dinner.

At MRS BRADSHAW'S comment MR and MRS ASHTON and the rest of
the Ashton family look at one another questioningly,
although nothing is said, then go on in.

                       MRS BRADSHAW
      (Setting the dish
       on the table)
Aaron, would you please help our
guests and take their coats and
show them to the living room?

                       AARON
Yes, Mother.

The Ashtons are seated in the living room as MRS BRADSHAW
continues to prepare the table.

                       MR BRADSHAW
I'll get some extra chairs for the
table.

                       MRS BRADSHAW
      (Looking up as she
       sets more places
       at the table)
Yes, and we'll need two more for
Timothy and Alison. They'll be
here any minute.

                       MR BRADSHAW
Yes, of course!

                       AARON
I can't wait to see the baby!

28.

                       MR BRADSHAW
      (Placing chairs
       around the table)
And I can't wait to see my little
grandson!

                       MRS BRADSHAW
      (Smiling)
Don't you mean, OUR grandson?

                       AARON
Yes, and my little nephew. I can't
wait til he is old enough for me
to teach him to fish and play
ball.

                       MRS BRADSHAW
      (Laughing)
Well, that will come soon enough.
But for now, could you please go
and bring the Christmas candles
for the table?

                       AARON
      (Going to get the
       candles)
Sure, Mom!

There is another knock at the door.

                       MRS BRADSHAW
They're here!

                       AARON
      (Going to get the
       door)
I'll get it!

As AARON opens the door, everyone excitedly crowds around
TIMOTHY and ALISON, admiring THE BABY as hugs are exchanged
and they present their gifts.

                       ALISON
      (Excitedly)
Merry Christmas!

                       TIMOTHY
      (Carrying in
       Christmas gifts
       and putting them
       under the
       Christmas tree)
Ho ho ho, Merry Christmas!

29.

                       MRS BRADSHAW
      (Hugging ALISON,
       then TIMOTHY)
Merry Christmas! Oh, look at him,
my, how he has grown!

                       MR BRADSHAW
      (Hugging them both)
Merry Christmas! Come on in, and
bring our little grandson in here
so we can get a closer look at
him!

                       AARON
Ah yes, now let me get a closer
look at my little nephew!

                       LOUISA
Aw, he is simply adorable!

                       SARAH
Oh, isn't he precious?

                       JONATHAN
He's a right cute little fellow.
What's his name?

                       TIMOTHY
      (Proudly)
Timothy Bradshaw the second!

                       MRS ASHTON
Named after his father, how nice!

                       MR ASHTON
I know you are proud of him!

                       ALISON
Well, he's asleep for now, but it
will be time for his feeding soon.

                       MRS BRADSHAW
      (Going into the
       living room to
       get the bassinet
       ready)
Well, let's lay him down over here
in the little bassinet I bought
for him, and let's all go ahead
and have dinner before he wakes
up.

30.

                       ALISON
      (Laying THE BABY
       down as MRS
       BRADSHAW puts a
       blanket over him)
That sounds good, I'm starved!

                       TIMOTHY
Me too! I always loved Mom's good
cooking, especially at Christmas!

                       MR BRADSHAW
We're just glad you both could
come and bring the baby.

Everyone moves to the dining room.

                       MR ASHTON
      (Sitting down at
       the table)
And we're glad to be here
celebrating Christmas Eve with you
all. We really appreciate you all
inviting us!

At this remark, MR and MRS BRADSHAW and AARON look at each
other strangely, although no one says anything. A moment of
awkward silence passes before MRS BRADSHAW finally speaks.

                       MRS BRADSHAW
Well, let's eat before dinner gets
cold!

Everyone bows their heads as MR BRADSHAW asks the blessing.

                       MR BRADSHAW
      (Bowing his head)
Let us pray.
Heavenly Father,
We pause right now to thank you
for all the blessings you have
given us this year, and for this
special time we have to celebrate
with our family and friends who
have gathered here as we take time
to remember the birth of your son,
Jesus Christ. We pray for those
less fortunate than we are in the
difficult times we are facing. We
ask your blessing on the food we
are about to receive, and that you
would bless this Christmas to be a
special memorable time for
everyone here. In Christ's name we
            (MORE)

                       MR BRADSHAW (cont'd)
pray, Amen!

Scene ends as the prayer is being said.

INT. THE BRADSHAW HOME - NIGHT

                       NARRATOR
Christmas has always had a way of
bringing people together, just as
it had our families on that night
before Christmas. The stage was
now set, and little did anyone
know, God was about to "make his
entrance". His plan was unfolding
just as He wanted it too.

After dinner. Last of the dishes are being dried. MRS ASHTON
is in the kitchen helping MRS BRADSHAW. Everyone else is
seated in the living room talking and admiring the baby.

                       MRS BRADSHAW
      (Drying plates and
       putting them away)
Well, that's about it for the
dishes. Thank you for helping me,
Eleanor!

                       MRS ASHTON
      (Drying hands and
       taking off her
       apron)
You are quite welcome! I'm just
glad to help, especially after
such a wonderful dinner!

                       MRS BRADSHAW
Why, thank you! I've always loved
to make it extra special at
Christmas. (Pause) You know,
that's a scrumptious looking
chocolate cake you brought. It's
almost too pretty to eat.

                       MRS ASHTON
Thank you! The girls and I worked
together on it. I guess you could
say that's my special thing at
Christmas. We always make Jesus a
birthday cake. I think I'll go and
see if everyone is about ready for
some.

32.

                       MRS BRADSHAW
And I'll whip up some good old
fashioned hot chocolate to go with
it.

                       MRS ASHTON
      (Going to the
       living room)
Who's ready for some chocolate
cake?

                       MR ASHTON
      (Rubbing his belly)
Sounds wonderful! You know, I just
realized I'm not as full as I
thought I was!

                       JONATHAN
      (Mimicking his
       father by rubbing
       his belly also)
Me too!

                       AARON
Me three!

                       MR BRADSHAW
I'll take some. You know I'd never
turn down chocolate cake!

                       LOUISA
      (Getting up)
Sarah and I will take some. I'll
help you, mother.

THE BABY is heard beginning to cry.

                       MRS BRADSHAW
      (Hearing THE BABY)
I think someone else is ready to
eat too!

                       ALISON
      (Going over to the
       bassinet to pick
       THE BABY up)
Yes, it's time for little
Timothy's Christmas Eve dinner
now! OK, Mama's here now.

33.

                       SARAH
      (Excitedly)
I'll hold him while you go and get
his milk!

                       ALISON
Alright, thanks.

ALISON carefully lays THE BABY in SARAH'S arms, then goes to
the kitchen to get his bottle ready for his feeding.

                       MRS BRADSHAW
      (Smiling at ALISON)
You know, this hot chocolate is
ready. If you girls could help
serve everyone, I think I'll go
and feed little Timothy so his
Mama can take a break.

                       ALISON
      (Smiling back at
       MRS BRADSHAW)
Aw, thanks, "Grandma"!

MRS BRADSHAW carefully takes THE BABY from SARAH and sits
down to begin feeding him. MRS ASHTON, LOUISA, and SARAH
continue to serve everyone cake and hot chocolate. ALISON
takes her cake and hot chocolate and sits down in the living
room. When everyone has been served, they all sit around,
enjoying the cake and hot chocolate and talking.

                       MRS BRADSHAW
You know it's always my pleasure
to spend a few moments with my
little grandson!

                       MR BRADSHAW
      (Smiling)
Don't you mean OUR grandson?

                       MRS BRADSHAW
      (Laughing)
Why, of course, "Grandpa"!

                       MR BRADSHAW
Yes, and it's "Grandpa's" turn to
hold him when he's done eating!

                       JONATHAN
Mrs. Bradshaw, this hot chocolate
is delicious! May I have some
more, please?

34.

                       MRS BRADSHAW
Of course you may! Just help
yourself, since "Grandma's" hands
are full!

                       JONATHAN
      (Laughing as he
       gets up to go to
       the kitchen)
OK, thanks!

                       AARON
Mrs. Ashton, the cake was
delicious...

                       MRS ASHTON
      (Smiling at him)
Yes, you may have some more!

AARON joins JONATHAN in the kitchen, where he quickly wolfs
down his second piece of cake. Both of them then re-enter
the living room, standing just inside the doorway with cups
of hot chocolate.

                       MR ASHTON
Well, this has certainly been a
most enjoyable evening. I'll have
to say, it's turned out to be the
best Christmas Eve we've had in a
while.

                       MR BRADSHAW
      (Lifting his cup
       up)
Yes, it has! We are so glad you
are all enjoying it. Merry
Christmas, everyone!

EVERYONE lifts their cups up together, saying "Merry
Christmas!" End of scene.

INT. THE BRADSHAW HOME - NIGHT

                       NARRATOR
So you see, it had all started
with that old piano. God had taken
a situation of hardship and turned
it into something beautiful and
brought us all together. Though
that was a miracle in itself, the
Ashton and Bradshaw families were
about to learn that it was about

much more than an old piano.

Everyone is seated in the living room of the Bradshaw home.

                       MRS ASHTON
Well, that was an absolutely
wonderful dinner!

                       MR ASHTON
      (Putting his hand
       on his belly)
Yes, it was! Now, after that
delicious chocolate cake, I am
officially stuffed!

                       JONATHAN
So am I! That was the best
Christmas Eve dinner I've had in a
long time!

                       LOUISA
Yes, it was wonderful!

                       SARAH
It sure was!

                       AARON
Mama's cooking is always the best,
especially at Christmas.

                       TIMOTHY
One of my favorite times to look
forward to at Christmas, sitting
down to all that good food!

                       ALISON
      (Laughing)
I think that's where our son gets
his appetite, from his dad!

                       TIMOTHY
You're probably right!
      (Smiling, leaning
       down and kissing
       his son's
       forehead)

                       MR BRADSHAW
You know, I was just thinking,
since we just bought the piano,
why don't we all gather around and
sing some Christmas songs?

36.

                       MRS BRADSHAW
Yes, that's a wonderful idea! I'll
play!

                       ALISON
      (Holding baby
       Timothy)
I know one! Let's sing "Silent
Night"!

Everyone gets up and moves toward the piano, where they all
gather around as MRS BRADSHAW sits down and begins to play
"Silent Night". As they are singing, the Ashtons begin to
look closely at the piano, as they begin to realize that it
very closely resembles the one that they just sold.

SILENT NIGHT, HOLY NIGHT!
ALL IS CALM, ALL IS BRIGHT.
ROUND YON VIRGIN, MOTHER AND CHILD.
HOLY INFANT SO TENDER AND MILD,
SLEEP IN HEAVENLY PEACE,
SLEEP IN HEAVENLY PEACE.

SILENT NIGHT, HOLY NIGHT!
SHEPHERDS QUAKE AT THE SIGHT.
GLORIES STREAM FROM HEAVEN AFAR
HEAVENLY HOSTS SING ALLELUIA,
CHRIST THE SAVIOR IS BORN!
CHRIST THE SAVIOR IS BORN.

SILENT NIGHT, HOLY NIGHT!
SON OF GOD LOVE'S PURE LIGHT.
RADIANT BEAMS FROM THY HOLY FACE
WITH DAWN OF REDEEMING GRACE,
JESUS LORD, AT THY BIRTH.
JESUS LORD, AT THY BIRTH

Everyone claps at the end of the song.

                       SARAH
      (Running her
       finger across a
       scratch on the
       back of the piano)
You know, that looks just like a
scratch that was on our piano.

                       MRS ASHTON
      (Noticing another
       familiar looking
       scratch)
And this one looks like another
scratch that was in the same place

on our old piano.

                       JONATHAN
      (Pointing out yet
       another familiar
       scratch on the
       side)
Wait a minute! It IS our old
piano! See, look at this scratch
on the side of it! I put it there!

                       MRS BRADSHAW
      (With a surprised
       look)
Do you mean...this was your piano?

                       MR ASHTON
      (Looking at it
       more closely)
Well, I'll be! I guess it IS our
old piano!

                       MRS ASHTON
Yes, when Joseph lost his job at
the factory, we had to sell the
piano to help make ends meet. We
didn't really want to, but we felt
we didn't have much of a choice.

                       MR ASHTON
Times have been hard on a lot of
people these days.

                       MR BRADSHAW
Well, we knew you all were having
a hard time, but we had no
idea...I mean, what are the
chances of us ending up with the
same piano you sold, and then...

MR BRADSHAW pauses for a moment, as though something has
just dawned on him.

                       MR BRADSHAW
Wait a minute! You know, I think
it was meant for you all to come
over tonight for Christmas Eve.

                       MRS ASHTON
Well, of course. We were so
thrilled when you invited us.

38.

At this point, the Bradshaws are looking at one another with
more strange looks.

                       MR BRADSHAW
Actually...

                       MRS BRADSHAW
We had talked about inviting you
over, but we were all feeling bad
because we hadn't

                       MR BRADSHAW
So...if none of us...I mean, how
did you all just know to come
over?

                       MRS ASHTON
Well, your daughter invited us. I
think she said her name was
Suzanna.

                       LOUISA
Yes, that was it...Suzanna! I was
wondering why she wasn't here...

There is a very somber pause here, as the Ashtons look at
one another, beginning to realize something is amiss. The
Bradshaws look at one another with shocked expressions for a
moment, then finally MR BRADSHAW speaks.

                       MR BRADSHAW
      (Softly)
There's something we need to tell
you all.
      (Pauses)
Suzanna died last Christmas Eve.
She had been sick for some time.

This is followed by gasps of shock from the Ashtons

                       MRS ASHTON
      (Puts hands up to
       her face)
Oh, my! But, how could she have...

                       LOUISA
Oh, that's terrible! But then, how
did she...

                       JONATHAN
But she was standing right there!

39.

                       MRS ASHTON
I know you all must have been
heartbroken!
      (Pauses)
Wait...Joseph, remember right
after she left, we said there was
something strange about her?

                       MR ASHTON
Yes, I remember now! And there was
something she said...
      (Pauses, thinking)

                       MR BRADSHAW
What did she say?

                       MR ASHTON
It was the last thing she said
before she walked away...

                       MRS ASHTON
Yes, she said, "I'm sure it will
be a Christmas to remember".

                       LOUISA
That's right! I remember her
saying that!

                       JONATHAN
Wow! I still can't believe it!

                       MR BRADSHAW
Well, there's only one
explanation.

                       SARAH
It's a Christmas miracle!

                       MRS BRADSHAW
You're right, Sarah! Our Suzanna
came back to bring us all together
so we could celebrate Christmas
Eve together.

                       LOUISA
Yes, and so we could all share one
more Christmas Eve around our old
piano!

                       SARAH
It's kind of like a "borrowed"
Christmas!

40.

                       MR ASHTON
That's a good way of putting it,
Sarah! We prayed that God would
make this Christmas memorable in
some way, and He has!

                       MRS ASHTON
Yes, He has! You know, there's no
limit to the wonderful ways God
works when we believe!

                       MR BRADSHAW
You're right, Mrs. Ashton! This
will truly be a Christmas to
remember, just like our Suzanna
promised, because God always keeps
His promises!

                       SARAH
Christmas of 1933, a "borrowed"
Christmas, but a Christmas to
remember!

EVERYONE agrees together: "A Christmas to remember"! As
scene ends and lights fade, spotlight zooms in to focus on
the Christmas candles burning on top of the piano.

INT. THE BRADSHAW HOME - NIGHT

                       NARRATOR
Though I would never get to know
my Aunt Suzanna, I know that she
came back to bring us all together
to remind us of the greatest gift
ever given, a gift greater than
any family traditions, and all the
other things we think of at
Christmas. I know, because I
believe in miracles, and I believe
in God.

After some time of singing Christmas songs, everyone is
sitting down in the living room.

                       MRS ASHTON
What an enjoyable evening it has
been!

41.

                       LOUISA
Yes, just like old times! We got
to have our Christmas around the
piano, just like we've always
done!

                       SARAH
Oh, this is turning out to be a
most wonderful Christmas Eve after
all!

                       JONATHAN
Yes, it has. It sure beats sitting
around home with nothing to do.

                       SARAH
You play very well, Mrs. Ashton!

                       MRS BRADSHAW
Why, thank you, Sarah! I learned
very early, and with lots of
practice. I've taught piano
lessons for the past couple of
years, too.

                       SARAH
That's wonderful! I am hoping to
be a music teacher, like Louisa's
going to be!

LOUISA smiles at this comment, but says nothing.

                       MRS BRADSHAW
Yes, and I hear Louisa's getting
ready to graduate in the Spring!

                       MRS ASHTON
Yes, our Louisa's graduating with
full honors! We are all very proud
of her.

                       MR ASHTON
I'm just glad she was able to get
the scholarship, or it wouldn't
have been possible.

                       MRS ASHTON
Yes, the Lord does work in
wonderful ways, when we put our
faith in Him.

42.

                       MR ASHTON
Well, we certainly appreciate your
having us over, even if it is a
Christmas miracle that brought us
here. I guess we should be getting
home so you all can have some
family time.

                       ALISON
Yes, and we probably need to get
little Timothy home so he can get
to bed.

                       TIMOTHY
      (Yawning)
And his daddy needs his sleep too!

                       MR BRADSHAW
Well, I must say after tonight, I
definitely believe in miracles!
God does work in mysterious ways.

                       MRS BRADSHAW
Yes, He does! None of us would
have ever imagined that somehow,
God would let our beloved Suzanna
come back just one more time, to
bring us together like this; and,
that it just happens to be your
old piano that we just bought!

                       MRS ASHTON
I truly believe God brought us
together tonight to share in this
miracle. He always has the most
amazing ways of answering our
prayers.

                       AARON
I'll have to say, I believe now a
lot more than I did before,
because God answered my prayers
too. I've really missed my sister
since she died. But through this
miracle we've had this Christmas,
I think we've all been reminded
that through Christ we can all
live again!

                       MR BRADSHAW
You're right, Aaron! God uses
things like this to remind us of
His love for us!

43.

Everyone nods in agreement.

                       MR ASHTON
It's so comforting to know that
even in the toughest times, such
as folks are going through these
days, God always has a way of
coming through for us.

                       MRS ASHTON
Yes, He does! Well, I guess we
should be getting home. We want to
thank you all again for such a
wonderful evening!

                       TIMOTHY
We should be getting home too.
      (Getting up to go
       hug his mother
       and father)
Thanks, Mama, for such a great
dinner. We've really enjoyed it!
      (Hugging AARON)
Love you, brother!

                       ALISON
      (Hugging MRS
       BRADSHAW then MR
       BRADSHAW, then
       getting THE BABY
       wrapped up)
It's been a wonderful Christmas
Eve! I'm glad to have such a
wonderful family!

                       MRS BRADSHAW
I'm just glad God gave me such a
great family! Now you all take
care and everyone have a Merry
Christmas and...
      (Pauses, listening)
Wait a minute...do you all hear
that? It sounds like a mighty
strong wind out there.
      (Going over and
       looking out the
       window)
It's snowing!

                       MRS ASHTON
      (Rushing over and
       looking out the
       window)
It looks like a snowstorm has come
            (MORE)

44.

                       MRS ASHTON (cont'd)
up!

Everyone is now rushing over to the window to look out at
the snow.

                       MRS BRADSHAW
Well, I can't have you getting our
little grandson out in that!
You'll all just have to stay here
and wait it out.

                       MR BRADSHAW
      (Looking out the
       window)
It looks like it's coming down
pretty hard, and with that wind
it'll be hard to see how to drive.
I think everyone had better stay
here for a while.

                       ALISON
      (Holding THE BABY
       close to her, as
       if talking to him)
Do you hear that, little Timothy?
Grandma and Grandpa said we can
stay here tonight where it's nice
and warm!

                       MRS BRADSHAW
Well, it's settled! We'll find
places for everyone to sleep.
Timothy and Alison and the baby
can have Suzanna's old room. Mr.
and Mrs. Ashton, you can have the
extra bedroom, and Louisa, you all
can sleep in here.

                       MRS ASHTON
Thank you, Mrs. Bradshaw.

                       MRS BRADSHAW
Of course! You are quite welcome.
I suppose God has other plans for
us all.

                       MR ASHTON
It almost seems He doesn't want us
to leave for some reason.

45.

                       TIMOTHY
You know, Mr. Ashton, I think
you're right!

                       ALISON
      (Getting up from
       the couch and
       moving away from
       the window)
I think I'm going to move away
from this window. I think that
wind's bringing a bit of a draft
coming through. I don't want
little Timothy to catch a cold.
Since he's gone back to sleep I'm
just going to lay him back down in
the bassinet.

                       LOUISA
Somehow, I don't think we're going
to sleep for a while.

                       JONATHAN
I don't think so either. It's
almost like I have a feeling
there's something really special
about this evening.

                       SARAH
I kind of feel the same way,
although I was looking forward to
unwrapping our gifts at home.

                       LOUISA
      (Standing up,
       smiling)
Speaking of gifts...everyone, I
have an announcement to make!
      (Everyone turns
       their attention
       to her. She
       continues after a
       short pause.)
I have been waiting for the
perfect time to say this; and, now
that the storm has come and we're
going to be here a while, I think
this is the perfect time.

                       JONATHAN
Well, what is it?

46.

                       MR ASHTON
Patience, Jonathan. Let her
finish.

                       LOUISA
      (Turning to SARAH)
I've been working on this for a
while. Sarah, I know how much
music and playing the piano mean
to you; and, I know how much
you've talked about going to the
music school. So, as my Christmas
gift to you, my sister, I've
arranged for a full scholarship
for you to attend the music
school!

Everyone gasps with surprise, comments (ad. lib. here), and
applause.

                       SARAH
      (Puts hands over
       her face, then
       jumps up to hug
       LOUISA)
Oh, Louisa, thank you! This is the
best Christmas ever! I am so
happy!

                       LOUISA
But that's not all! The school is
getting a new piano for this
coming fall. So, in light of all
the hard times and all, I put in a
good word for you. So, they are
giving their old one to you!

                       SARAH
      (Squeals with joy)
Oh, that is wonderful! We're
getting another piano! Oh, thank
you, so much! You're such a
wonderful sister! But how did you
know we were going to have to sell
our old one?

                       LOUISA
Well, I didn't really, but father
and I talked and he told me things
were going kind of rough since he
lost his job. So that's when I got
to work on it. I wanted to save it
for a surprise for you for
            (MORE)

47.

                       LOUISA (cont'd)
Christmas.

                       SARAH
Oh, it's the most wonderful
Christmas gift! Thank you!

                       MRS ASHTON
And I am sure you will do well, as
your sister has!

                       SARAH
Oh, I will!

                       MRS BRADSHAW
You know, that wind seems to be
picking up steadily.

                       ALISON
It sure does. I think I am just
going to put a blanket down and
sit right here in the middle of
the living room floor with little
Timothy.

                       MRS BRADSHAW
Well, there's nothing wrong with
that. At least you're away from
that cold wind coming through the
window.

                       ALISON
I like the way this little
bassinet sits low, like a little
basket, so I can just sit here
close to him.

                       TIMOTHY
      (Sitting down on
       the blanket)
I think I am going to just sit
here with my wife and son for a
while.

                       MRS BRADSHAW
I think I am going to light the
Christmas candles for a nice
effect too, since it's Christmas
Eve. Besides, you never know with
this storm the lights may go out.

48.

                       MR BRADSHAW
      (Getting up to get
       the candles)
Good idea. I'll get them.
      (Lights candles,
       then sits back
       down)

                       TIMOTHY
      (Stroking his
       son's head as he
       sleeps)
You know, there's just something
about the glow of the candles, and
sitting here with my wife, my son,
and a wonderful family and
friends, that really gives me a
special feeling and reminds me
what all we really have to be
thankful for this Christmas.

                       MRS ASHTON
I think you're right, Timothy.
Especially with things the way
they are, it's times like this
that really remind us of what
matters the most and...
      (MRS BRADSHAW'S
       sentence is cut
       short as the
       lights go out)

                       MR ASHTON
Well, there went the lights.

                       MRS BRADSHAW
Well, the way this storm's going,
I knew it was going to happen
sooner or later.

                       MR BRADSHAW
Well, at least you got the candles
lit.

                       JONATHAN
      (After a short
       pause)
Hey, wait a minute! Look at the
glow on Timothy and Alison's
faces...and the way the candle
light's reflecting on the baby's
face. What does that remind you
of?

49.

                       SARAH
      (Thinking for a
       moment)
Why, the manger scene!

                       JONATHAN
That's right! We've all been going
on about family traditions, and
gifts and all of that. And yet,
right here before our eyes, this
little scene Timothy and Alison
have created, without even
realizing it, is God, reminding us
all right now, of the greatest
gift ever given - God's gift of
His son, to us, that first
Christmas so long ago!

                       MRS BRADSHAW
He's right! I've been sitting here
looking at them and yet I never
realized it until now.

                       MR ASHTON
Yes, and that's the real miracle!
I think that is why God brought us
all here together tonight, to
remind us all of the greatest gift
of all!

                       SARAH
How could we not see it all this
time? It's the one gift that is
greater than any family
traditions, pianos, or any gifts
money can buy!

                       MR BRADSHAW
Just think, God sent our beloved
Suzanna back to bring our two
families together this Christmas
to remind us of what matters the
most, and that is the greatest
miracle of all.

                       LOUISA
      (With emotion)
I thought earlier, that it was the
whole thing about the piano, but I
don't think any of us expected
this, yet here it is, right before
our eyes.

50.

                       AARON
Our country has gone through a
terrible Depression. And we can
only hope it is going to get
better soon. I'd like to think
that 1934 is going to be a better
year, and that somehow, we are all
in the process of pulling out of
this. But the miracle we've seen
here tonight, in the way this
whole thing has unfolded, is God's
way of reminding us of the one
gift He gave to us freely, one
that we don't need money for!

                       MR ASHTON
Earlier, when we thought it was
just about the piano that God had
brought us here, I thought of what
Sarah said about a "borrowed"
Christmas. But if you think about
it, God let us "borrow" His Son,
so that He could come down and die
for us. I think we should all pray
right now and thank God for the
gift of His Son, and ask Him to
forgive us all for taking it for
granted.

                       MR BRADSHAW
I think you are right, Mr. Ashton.
Would you lead us in prayer now?

                       MR ASHTON
I will be glad to! Let us pray:
      (Bowing his head,
       along with the
       others)
Our dear heavenly father, we come
before you on this Christmas Eve,
in all humble awe and adoration
and thanksgiving to you, for the
wonderful gift of your Son, that
you so freely gave to us so long
ago on that first Christmas night.
Forgive us for taking it for
granted, and help us to freely
share it with others, just as you
have so wonderfully given it to
us, and reminded us this night, in
the miraculous way that you have,
of this greatest gift of your love
to us. We ask it in the name of
            (MORE)

51.

                       MR ASHTON (cont'd)
your precious Son, Jesus, Amen!

EVERYONE: "Amen!"

                       TIMOTHY
You know what song I'd love to
hear right now? Away In A Manger".

                       SARAH
Oh, that would be perfect! It
would go just perfectly with our
little "manger" scene!

                       MRS BRADSHAW
Sarah, would you like to play it
for us?

                       SARAH
      (Going over to the
       piano)
Why, I would be honored to, Mrs.
Bradshaw. I get to play the old
piano one more time!

                       LOUISA
      (Smiling)
Well, I think it is only fitting
that our future music student
should play it.

                       SARAH
      (Sitting at the
       piano, pausing
       before she plays)
It's turned out to be a wonderful
Christmas after all, a borrowed
one, but a wonderful one!

Sarah begins playing "AWAY IN A MANGER" as everyone begins
to sing. There are smiles on their faces as they sing,
looking down at the "manger scene" unwittingly created
earlier by TIMOTHY and ALISON and their BABY son. Scene ends
with the CAROLERS filing back out from either side and
joining in the singing, as the lights focus on TIMOTHY,
ALISON, and THE BABY.

AWAY IN A MANGER,
NO CRIB FOR HIS BED
THE LITTLE LORD JESUS
LAID DOWN HIS SWEET HEAD

THE STARS IN THE BRIGHT SKY

52.

LOOKED DOWN WHERE HE LAY
THE LITTLE LORD JESUS
ASLEEP ON THE HAY

THE CATTLE ARE LOWING
THE POOR BABY WAKES
BUT LITTLE LORD JESUS
NO CRYING HE MAKES

I LOVE THEE, LORD JESUS
LOOK DOWN FROM THE SKY
AND STAY BY MY SIDE,
'TIL MORNING IS NIGH.

BE NEAR ME, LORD JESUS,
I ASK THEE TO STAY
CLOSE BY ME FOREVER
AND LOVE ME I PRAY

BLESS ALL THE DEAR CHILDREN
IN THY TENDER CARE
AND TAKE US TO HEAVEN
TO LIVE WITH THEE THERE

After the last verse, the piano continues to play as the
NARRATOR speaks.

                       NARRATOR
I have always felt honored to know
that God chose me to represent His
Son Jesus that night on the eve of
my first Christmas, the Christmas
of 1933. I am proud to say I am
still representing Him today, and
I hope that you will too! Merry
Christmas and good night!
