FADE IN:

EXT. GAS STATION - NIGHT

A SMALL GAS STATION SITS ALONE ON A BARE,
DUSTY PIECE OF LAND. THE SKY DARKENS AS THE
SUN DISAPPEARS.

A CREAKING, WEATHERED SIGN SWINGS IN THE
BREEZE OVER TWO PREHISTORIC GAS PUMPS.
SEVERAL LETTERS HAVE FADED OVER THE YEARS,
NOW READING :

LAS CHANCE! RES R OMS
AN GAS!

The nostalgic sound of old-time country music come
from inside the building.

INT. GAS STATION - NIGHT

An antique radio is placed on the corner of a dirty,
cluttered, make-shift office.

Behind the counter sits a thin, wrinkled old man,
sleeping in a chair. His snoring rises above the lyrics of
cheating hearts and shots of whiskey.

EXT. GAS STATION - NIGHT

A small car pulls up in front of the building - THE ONLY
STRUCTURE ON THIS OLD HIGHWAY. Inside the vehicle are two
passengers. TINA, 21 years young, and her daughter, RAE, age
6.

INT. CAR - NIGHT

The little girl shifts uncomfortably in her seat, looking
out at the old building with uneasy eyes.

                       TINA
Okay. We made it.

2.

                       RAE
Not here, Mommy.

                       TINA
Why not, baby?

                       RAE
It's scary.

                       TINA
Oh, honey, it is -

Tina looks at the building's dilapidated features and
realizes just how right her daughter is.

                       TINA
- not.

                       RAE
It is so.

                       TINA
Well, baby, it's the only
place for miles. Don't you have
to pee?

                       RAE
Yes. Just not here.

                       TINA
      (harshly)
It has to be here!

Rae lowers her head, hurt by her mother's tone.

                       RAE
You're just yelling at me because
you're mad at Daddy.

Tina sighs, placing a comforting hand on Rae's shoulder.

                       TINA
      (apologetic)
I'm sorry, baby. Forgive me?

Rae nods.

3.

                       TINA
Good. Now, come on. I'll even go
with you.

EXT. CAR - NIGHT

Rae takes her mother's hand and moves quickly to the
side of the tore to a rusty door labeled REST ROOM.

Tina tries to open the door, but it won't budge.

                       TINA
Shit.

                       RAE
I have to pee, Mom. REALLY BAD.

Tina and Rae hurry into the gas station.

INT. GAS STATION - NIGHT

A tiny bell hanging over the door dings as Tina walks
into the store. The old man still sleeps behind the
counter.

                       TINA
Earl, I need a key for the
bathroom.

A loud snore is the man's response.

                       TINA
      (louder)
Excuse me, Earl? (sigh) I hate
this shit hole.

SNORE. Tina sighs and leans over the counter.

Rae turns to the door. Something outside the glass has
caught her attention. She giggles.

                       RAE
Look, Mommy.

4.

                       TINA
Just a sec, baby.

Tina reaches for a single key hanging just out of her
reach on a small hook.

Rae slips silently away from her and pushes the door open.
The bell jingles but goes unnoticed from the determined
mother.

Oblivious, Tina is almost there. The key is at her
fingertips.

SUDDENLY, THE OLD MAN JUMPS TO LIFE, GRABBING TINA'S ARM.
She screams.

                       EARL
What the hell are you doing?

                       TINA
Let me go, please?!

Earl releases his grip, recognizing Tina.

                       TINA
I just needed the key for the
bathroom. You were asleep. I
didn't mean to -

                       EARL
I'm sorry, Tina. I'm just a jumpy
old man. Tings haven't been right
around here these days. (pause)
You and Charlie have another
fight?

Tina nods as Earl hands her the key. Tina eyes him. He is
clearly agitated. She notices several missing person's
fliers on the counter. Mostly CHILDREN. She turns.

                       TINA
Rae -

Tina motions to Rae - WHO IS NO LONGER THERE.

5.

                       TINA
Rae? Shit, she must have went
outside.

A CHILD'S SCREAM suddenly echoes outside. Earl comes
around the corner of the counter, alarmed. For an old
man he's moving rapidly.

                       EARL
Jesus-H-Christ! Get her inside!

Tina heads for the door.

EXT. STATION - NIGHT

Earl pushes past Tina, looking for the child.

Tina is puzzled. Something's not right with Earl.

                       TINA
What's going on here? Rae?!

NO ANSWER.

                       TINA
      (alarmed)
RAE?

Then, from around the corner -

                       RAE
Mommy, look!

Earl and Tina round the corner of the building. Rae
stands there with a large yellow dog at her side. She's
not screaming. She's laughing.

                       RAE
I found a doggy.

                       TINA
Rae, you know better than to run
off like that!

6.

Suddenly, the dog becomes agitated, GROWLING. It
whimpers, uneasy about something. Earl looks around in the
darkness.

                       EARL
Tina, go get your girl.

                       TINA
What's the matter?

                       EARL
GRAB HER!

Tina moves to Rae, turning her back to Earl. She is unaware
that at that moment a LARGE, CLAWED, HAIRY ARM EXTENDS FROM
THE ROOF OF THE STATION, LIFTING EARL OFF THE GROUND AND
PULLING HIM UP OUT OF SIGHT.

The dog bolts, disappearing into the night.

Earl screams, out of sight. Tina and Rae look back.

                       TINA
Earl? Are you okay? Earl? Where
are you?

Tina and Rae walk towards where Earl was standing only a
moment ago.

                       TINA
Earl?

SOMETHING DRIPS DOWN ON TO TINA'S HAND.

                       TINA
What the hell?

ANOTHER DRIP. THEN ANOTHER. It's thick. Red. It's BLOOD.

With a WHOOSH, Earl's body falls from over the edge of
the roof. Where his face should be is a bloody crater.

Tina screams, scooping Rae up into her arms. A
horrifying ROAR sounds out from above.

Tina runs to her car.

7.

INT. CAR - NIGHT

Rae cries, very frightened. Tina is hysterical,
fumbling with her keys. Just as she manages to get the
key into the ignition, something SLAMS against the roof
of the car.

A CLAWED HAND RIPS THROUGH THE ROOF. Tina and Rae
scream. Tina protectively throws herself over Rae's
tiny body.

The fingers CLAW at Tina's head, her hair twisting
around the razor sharp claws.

                       RAE
Mommy!

                       TINA
Run, baby! Run!

Rae pushes the passenger's side door open and takes off,
running away into the night.

The clawed hand clamps down onto's Tina's head.

                       TINA
NO!!!!

Tina is violently ripped up out of her seat and through
the roof. Her screaming abruptly stops. Blood drips
down through the jagged hole.

A TRIUMPHANT ROAR SOUNDS OUT.

                                         CUT TO BLACK.

EXT. COLLEGE CAMPUS - DAY

The sun shines brightly above a college campus. There's
nothing too spectacular about this place. It's beautiful and
well maintained, but it's nothing we haven't seen before in
any SMALL TOWN, USA.

INT. COLLEGE DORM ROOM - DAY

The sun shines through the window of this messy room.
Clothes litter the floor. The two beds are unmade.
Empty beer bottles take up nearly all available space not
claimed by the laundry.

Posters of scantily clad models occupy the wall space.

MICAH, a handsome "check out my abs" kind of guy, stands
at the mirror, flexing his muscles. His shirt is off and we
see that he has reason to gloat.

                       MICAH
Oh, yeah. Looking good.

The door opens and VIC, Micah's roommate, walks in. Vic is a
rough around the edges guy. He's handsome, but his
appearance is rugged.

                       VIC
Micah, what are you doing? Beating
off to yourself again?

Micah turns to his buddy.

                       MICAH
Maybe. Wanna watch?

Vic laughs.

                       VIC
You're supposed to be getting
ready. We have to pick up the
girls in ten minutes.

9.

                       MICAH
I am ready. My clothes are in the
bag by the door.

Vic eyes the large duffel bag sitting on the floor. He moves
to it and throws it on the bed.

                       MICAH
Hey, what the hell are you doing?

Vic unzips the bag. He pulls out a few shirts and finds a
small bag of marijuana.

                       VIC
No fucking way, man. Not this
trip.

                       MICAH
Why the fuck not?!

                       MICAH
Because Amy doesn't like this
shit.

                       MICAH
So, Amy doesn't have to smoke it!

Vic pulls a small box out of his pocket. A ring box. He
holds it up for Micah to see.

                       VIC
Do you see this? This trip
is going to be nothing but
good for her. I want this to be
special. Can't you forfeit this
time?

                       MICAH
What the hell happened to you,
man? We were like brothers once,
but anymore I feel like your my
fucking parole officer or
something.

10.

                       VIC
You're still my brother, man. Can
you just do this for me, please?

Micah nods.

                       MICAH
Sure.

                       VIC
Thanks.

Vic tosses the bag to Micah and walks out of the room.

Micah stands there, thinking for a minute. He looks down at
the bag of pot and slips it into his duffel.

                       MICAH
What they don't know won't hurt
them.

Grabbing a shirt out of the bag, Micah puts it on. He grabs
his things and leaves the room, closing the door behind him.

                                         CUT TO:

EXT. GIRL'S DORM - DAY

Two beautiful girls sit outside on the porch steps of
their building. AMY is a beautiful blonde with a look
of innocence about her, but underneath it all, there may be
a fighter somewhere inside. DEBRA, a beautiful
- but bitchy - girl, sits next to her. There is nothing
deceiving about her appearance. Everything about her
demeanor screams BITCH.

                       DEBRA
Could they take any longer?

                       AMY
They'll be here soon. You know how
they are. They're never on time
for anything.

11.

                       DEBRA
Right. It makes me wonder why I'm
even going on this fucking trip,
in the first place.

                       AMY
So you don't have to spend the
weekend with your parents.

                       DEBRA
Right. I remember, now. So, where
are we going, anyway?

                       AMY
I don't know, really. Vic
just wanted to go on a road
trip. He didn't say where to.
He's being really mysterious
about the whole thing.

Debra rolls her eyes.

                       DEBRA
It's probably a drug run.

                       AMY
No. Vic gave that up.

                       DEBRA
That's what he told you. How do
you know it's the truth?

                       AMY
Because I trust him.

                       DEBRA
      (condescendingly)
Good, sweetie. That's real good.
I'm sure you're right.

                       AMY
Can't you drop the bitch act for
one day?

12.

                       DEBRA
It's not an act, Amy. You know
that. But, sure. For you,
anything. What are roommates for?

A moment later, and SUV pulls up in front of the
girls.

Vic, Micah, and WILL, a dorky kind of guy - cute in his
own way - climb out of the vehicle.

Debra turns to Amy.

                       DEBRA
Why is Will going?

                       AMY
Why not? He's Vic's friend.

                       DEBRA
He's a fucking dweeb.

Amy rolls her eyes. She stands and wraps her arms around
Vic's neck. They kiss one another passionately.

                       VIC
Hey, baby. You girls ready?

Debra rises.

                       DEBRA
Duh. We've only been sitting here
for an hour waiting on your slow
asses.

Amy shoots Debra a look. Debra notices, but could give a
fuck.

                       DEBRA
What?

Micah and Will grab the girls' bags and throw them into the
back of the SUV.

Everyone climbs into the truck.

13.

                       VIC
Alright, everyone. Let's get this
show on the road.

The SUV takes off down the street.

EXT. HIGHWAY - DAY

The SUV roars down an endless stretch of highway.

INT. SUV - DAY

Inside sit the five twenty-something friends. All the bags
are piled high behind them in the back of the vehicle.

Vic is driving. Amy sits next to him. Side to side, we
see that his rugged good looks make him an odd
counterpart to her beauty. She could have easily
stepped out of a GAP advert. Their three friends sit in
the back seat.

All passengers looks extremely comfortable in the summer
heat.

                       DEBRA
I'm sweating like a pig, you guys.

                       VIC
The AC is on full blast. What do
you want me to do?

                       MICAH
Deb's right. It's hot in here.

                       AMY
      (sneering)
Why don't you just light up a
joint and chill?

Micah makes a face.

14.

                       AMY
There's got to be a store or
something coming up soon.

                       WILL
Have you looked outside? We're in
the middle of nowhere.

                       VIC
      (looking)
Wait. I see a sign up the road a
little ways.

EXT. HIGHWAY - DAY

The SUV speeds past a weathered sign.

LAST CHANCE! REST ROOMS AND GAS!
5 MILES

                       AMY
      (reading)
Last chance. Rest rooms and gas. 5
miles. See, I told you.

                       VIC
Okay. Pit stop in 5 miles.

EXT. SUV - DAY

Te sun shines brightly. The store is dark within.
The radio, however, we can hear is still on.

Tina's car is still parked in front of the gas pumps.
Moments pass before the SUV pulls on to the dusty lot.

15.

INT. SUV - DAY

                       DEBRA
Finally.

                       WILL
It looks kind of...dead.

                       DEBRA
I don't give a damn what it looks
like. Just let me out of this damn
car.

Debra pushes her way out of the vehicle. The others follow.

EXT. SUV - DAY

The friends stretch as they exit the vehicle. Will takes
notice of Tina's car.

                       WILL
Jeez. Someone did a number on that
car.

The group gathers around the car, examining the large jagged
opening in the roof. Dried blood surrounds the gaping hole.

Micah reaches for something hanging on a jagged piece of
metal. It's HAIR.

                       AMY
What the hell is that?

                       WILL
It looks like some of Debra's
chest hair.

                       DEBRA
Fuck you.

The hair makes its way from person to person. Debra makes a
disgusted face as she hands it off.

16.

                       DEBRA
Wow. If you guys want to stand
around and look at hair, be my
guest. But, I'm going inside. It's
fucking hot out here.

                       AMY
I'm with Deb. Come on, boy.s

INT. GAS STATION - DAY

It's dark. The radio plays the same old-time country
music.

Debra enters first - slowly; cautiously.

                       DEBRA
Who listens to this shit?

                       AMY
It's really dark in here.

Micah searchers the wall and finds the light switch.
He flips it.

                       MICAH
Not anymore.

                       VIC
Hello? Is there anyone here?

                       DEBRA
Well, the chair's empty. Lights
were off. My guess is probably
not.

The gang starts looking around. Debra grabs a soda
out of the cooler at the back of the store.

                       DEBRA
Do you guys want a Coke?

The others ad-lib. "Sure". "Yeah". "Alright".

17.

                       DEBRA
Get it yourselves.

Debra laughs and walks to the counter. The others get
their drinks and join her. Amy frowns.

                       AMY
I wonder where the cashier is.

                       MICAH
Probably off screwing his sister
somewhere.

                       WILL
What if it's a woman?

                       MICAH
Okay. Her brother, then.

                       AMY
Shut up, Micah.

                       MICAH
Why? Who's going to hear me?

                       WILL
He's right. Do you see anyone
else here?

                       WILL
I sure don't, and since there's
no one around, I say this shit is
free.

                       MICAH
Sounds good to me.

                       AMY
We can't do that. It's stealing.

                       DEBRA
That empty seat over there says we
can, my dear.

18.

                       AMY
There's got to be somebody else
here.(calls out) Hello? Hello?!

The words echo in the small building.

                       MICAH
See? No one here.

Micah grabs a bag of chips off of a nearby snack stand and
heads for the door.

                       AMY
Where are you going?

                       MICAH
I've got to grab something out of
my bag.

Micah heads outside.

EXT. GAS STATION - DAY

Micah moves to the back of the SUV. He starts fumbling
through his bag until he finds his stash of pot. He stuffs
it in to his pocket.

                       MICAH
Come to Papa.

Micah closes the hatch and heads around to the side of the
building.

INT. GAS STATION - DAY

The four friends ,still inside, look around the store. Old
black and white photos hang all over the place from many
years before. Advertisements hang on the wall as well, all
very out of date.

A few animal heads hang on the wall as well. Their glossy
eyes stare down at the friends.

19.

                       WILL
It's like this place is
stuck in some kind of time
warp.

                       DEBRA
Yeah, this shit is seriously
old.

                       AMY
It has its charms.

                       VIC
It has a lot of things,
babe. Charm isn't one of
them.

                       AMY
I wonder what Micah's up to? He's
been gone a while.

EXT. GAS STATION - DAY

Hiding around the side of the store, Micah leans against the
brick wall, smoking a joint. He looks around, making sure no
one can see, and takes another hit.

SUDDENLY, from around the front side of the building comes a
LOUD CRASH.

Micah drops the joint, jumping about a foot into the air.

                       MICAH
What the holy fuck?!

INT. GAS STATION - DAY

The friends look frozen in shock, surprise plastered across
all of their faces.

                       WILL
What the hell was that?!

The group runs outside.

20.

EXT. GAS STATION - DAY

                       AMY
Oh, my God.

Micah rounds the corner of the building, meeting the gang as
they exit.

                       MICAH
What the -

The SUV rests flat on its frame. THE TIRES ARE GONE. Dust
circles the vehicle, stirred up from the impact.

                       VIC
My fucking truck!

                       MICAH
Holy shit! What happened to the
tires?

                       VIC
You tell me. You were the one out
here.

                       MICAH
I didn't see shit! I was around
the side of the building.

Debra sniffs the air.

                       DEBRA
      (smirky)
Yeah, and we know what you were
doing.

Vic frowns, looking at Micah.

                       MICAH
Hey! What?! Let's focus on the
important issue here. Like the
truck.

The mention of the current dilemma diverts all attention
from Micah's recreational drug use back to the SUV.

21.

                       DEBRA
How the hell could this happen?

                       VIC
How the fuck do I know?!

                       DEBRA
Don't snap at me, ass hole! I
didn't take your damn tires.

Vic kicks at the ground, stirring up more dust.

                       AMY
This isn't possible. You can't
just drop a truck like that. Who -
or WHAT - could have done this?

                       VIC
It could have been flying monkeys
for all I care. I don't really
give a damn. I just want my
fucking tires back!

Amy flinches. Vic's tone is harsh.

                       WILL
Calm down and stop yelling at
everyone.

                       MICAH
How are we going to get out of
here?

                       WILL
What about the other car?

                       VIC
Maybe.

Vic moves to Tina's car. He inspects it, looking through the
windows.

                       VIC
I don't believe it. The fucking
keys are in the ignition.

22.

The others hurry over to surround the car.

                       MICAH
Well, see if she starts up, man.

Vic rounds to the driver's side of the car. He hops in.
Turns the key. Nothing happens.

Vic tries two more times. Still, the engine won't turn over.

                       VIC
God dammit!

Vic steps out of the car, slamming the door. The others
moan.

                       VIC
I don't like this. This isn't
right.

                       WILL
We need to get out of here. What
are we going to do?

Debra shakes her head.

                       DEBRA
Wow, this is a great way to start
the summer. Some road trip this is
turning out to be.

Debra pulls out her cell phone. She looks at it.

                       DEBRA
And, of course, there's no fucking
service.

                       MICAH
What do we do now?

                       VIC
Maybe we can walk until we come
across somebody who can pick us
up. I don't know.

23.

                       DEBRA
Who is going to pick up up, Vic? I
haven't seen anyone on this road
for the last three hours! NO BODY!

                       AMY
Maybe we can find a house. There's
a gas station here. Someone has to
live nearby.

                       VIC
It's worth a look. Come on. Let's
get moving.

The scorching sun rides high in the sky as the group starts
walking.

EXT. ROAD - DAY

Time has passed. Daylight is waning. The groups stops at the
side of the road, covered in sweat.

                       DEBRA
What time is it?

Amy looks at her watch.

                       AMY
It's almost six.

                       DEBRA
Fuck this. We've been walking for
over an hour. There's nothing out
here. It's going to be dark soon,
and I think we should head back.

                       AMY
She's right. Let's head back.

                       VIC
No fucking way. I want to keep
looking.

24.

                       AMY
Why do you have to be so bull
headed all of the time, Vic? I
don't think it's a good idea.
Whoever took the tires is still
out there. And if they can do
that, think about what they could
do to us.

                       VIC
Don't worry about me.

Vic pats a knife that is holstered to his belt.

                       VIC
I'm not scared. I'll be fine.

Vic touches Amy's face gently. He kisses her lips and they
embrace in a loving hug.

                       AMY
Please, be careful. It's getting
dark.

                       VIC
I'm not afraid of the dark.

Vic turns to the rest of the group.

                       VIC
So, who's going with me? Micah?
Will?

                       MICAH
I think I should probably stay
with the girls. You know, stand
guard or something.

                       DEBRA
Lucky us. I'd rather take my
chances walking.

                       VIC
What about you, Will?

25.

                       WILL
No, way. I don't do good in high
stress situations. I'm playing it
safe.

Vic, for the first time, seems a little doubtful. He looks
in the other direction, down the road. It stretches into
darkness. He turns back to the others.

                       VIC
Okay...Here goes nothing. Keep
walking until you get to the gas
station. I'll be back as soon as I
can.

Vic heads off on his own. After a few moments, he disappears
from sight. The others stand there for a moment.

                       AMY
I hope he can find help.

                       MICAH
He will. Vic's great in crisis
situations.

                       WILL
I wouldn't exactly call this a
crisis. It's not like we're in any
danger.

At that moment, something is head in the darkness. It's
animal-like. It almost sounds like GROWLING.

The friends tense up.

                       WILL
Okay...Maybe we should go...NOW.

                       DEBRA
You don't have to tell me twice.

Debra starts walking at a brisk pace. The others follow
close behind, spooked.

As they move away, THE OUTLINE OF A LARGE ANIMAL STEPS INTO
FRAME, its back to us, watching the friends.

26.

EXT. GAS STATION - NIGHT

Debra, Amy, Micah, and Will approach the gas station.
Darkness rapidly fills the sky.

                       MICAH
So, what now?

                       DEBRA
I'm going inside. I'm starving.

                       AMY
Me, too.

Amy and Debra head for the building.

                       MICAH
Alright. You girls do that. We'll
stand guard...out here.

INT. GAS STATION - NIGHT

Debra grabs several snack cakes and chips from the shelves.

                       AMY
It's pretty weird, huh?

                       DEBRA
What is?

                       AMY
The tires just disappearing like
they did.

                       DEBRA
Weird's not the word. Fucked up is
more like it. And what about this
store? It's not closed down, but
there's no one here.

                       AMY
It's pretty creepy if you ask me.

                       DEBRA
Are you worried about Vic?

27.

                       AMY
Yeah.

                       DEBRA
Well, don't be. He's a big boy.
He'll be back in no time.

Amy smiles, taken by surprise by Debra's sincerity.

                       AMY
You're probably right. If there's
one thing that Vic knows how to
do, it's take care of himself.

                       DEBRA
Of course I'm right. Now, shut the
fuck up and stop worrying. You're
ruing my appetite.

EXT. ROAD - NIGHT

Vic walks quickly down the road. Total darkness has set in.

There is an unsettling silence in the night. No signs of
life.

                       VIC
      (to himself)
As usual, you were wrong, Vic. Of
course you're not going to find
any help. You're in the middle of
bum fucked Egypt.

Vic keeps walking, silent. Then, faintly, a sound comes from
up ahead.

As Vic keep walking, the sound becomes more and more
distinct. CREAKING.

Vic squints his eyes, scanning the area ahead.

                       VIC
Thank God.

28.

An old, rickety shack sits several feet ahead. The door
creaks on rusty hinges, caught in the breeze.

                       VIC
Hello? Is anyone there?

Vic runs towards the shack. The door swings back and forth.

CREAK. CREAK. CREAK.

Vic stops the door in mid-swing. Once again, there is
SILENCE.

                       VIC
Is there anyone in there?

There is no reply. Vic slowly opens the door and recoils as
an awful stench invades his nostrils. He gags.

SUDDENLY, TWO HANDS GRAB AT HIS LEGS FROM BEHIND. Tiny
hands. Vic screams and turns, knife drawn.

A little girls in tattered clothing stands there, tears
streaming down her face. RAE.

                       RAE
Help me. Please. My Mommy -
(cries)

                       VIC
It's okay. What happened?

Vic kneels, facing Rae.

                       RAE
It was mon - mon - monsters!!!!

Vic makes a face.

                       VIC
Monsters?

SUDDENLY, CLAWED ARMS SHOOT OUT FROM WITHIN THE DARKNESS OF
THE SHACK, LATCHING ON TO VIC'S SHOULDERS.

Rae screams as Vic is jerked violently inside the small

29.

structure. She takes off as the door the shack slams shut.
Vic screams from within.

                                         CUT TO:

EXT. GAS STATION - NIGHT

Micah, Debra, and Will sit next to the SUV. Amy paces
nervously back and forth.

                       MICAH
Sit down, Amy. You're making me
nervous.

                       AMY
Well, you should be nervous. Vic's
been gone a long time.

                       DEBRA
Amy, we talked about this.

                       AMY
Well, he should be back by now.
What if something happened to him?
He might be hurt.

                       MICAH
Amy, sit down and chill out.

                       AMY
Like you? All you do is chill out.
No worries, right?

                       MICAH
What is your problem with me?

                       AMY
Because every time things get
serious, this is how you are. You
always tack the high road out. And
Vic usually goes with you.

Will looks the other way, sensing an oncoming fight. Debra
watches in fascination, hoping for one.

30.

                       WILL
Come on, guys. Don't do this.

                       DEBRA
Why not? It's just getting good.

Micah and Amy ignore them.

                       MICAH
That's what this is about? That
was a long time ago. Vic isn't
into that anymore. He really cares
about you. he wants things to
work. I would know. I live with
the guy. He loves you. So, stop
jumping all over me!

Amy crosses her arms. She finally nods and sits down.

                       WILL
Guys, there are more important
things going on right now. Put you
differences aside for one night.

                       AMY
Maybe I am just overreacting. It's
just - Hey, look you guys.

Two headlights are fast approaching.

                       AMY
Someone's coming.

                       WILL
Maybe Vic found some help.

                       MICAH
No. He went the other way, dumb
ass.

The four friends rise as the headlights come to a stop in
front of them. It's a truck.

A ruggedly handsome man steps out of the vehicle. CHARLIE.
He rusn to Tina's car. He look in through the window, then

31.

at the jagged hole in the roof. He turns to the group with a
crazed look on his face.

                       CHARLIE
Where are they?!

                       AMY
I don't know who -

                       CHARLIE
Don't fuck with me! Where are my
girls?!

                       WILL
We don't know what you're talking
about, man.

                       CHARLIE
God dammit!

Charlie runs into the gas station. In and out.

                       CHARLIE
Tina?! Rae?!

The friends watch in bewilderment as Charlie storms past
them. They huddle a little closer together, nervous.

                       CHARLIE
Where's Earl?

                       DEBRA
Who's Earl?

                       CHARLIE
He owns this place.

                       AMY
There's no one else here besides
us.

                       CHARLIE
Have you checked the trailer?

Without waiting for a response, Charlie heads around to the
back of the gas station. A small trailer sits several feet

32.

from the building. It is an older, silver structure. The
lights are off inside.

Amy, Debra, Micah, and Will follow.

Charlie knocks on the door of the trailer.

                       CHARLIE
Earl?

There is no reply. Charlie knocks again.

                       CHARLIE
Earl, are you in there? It's
Charlie!

Still, no reply.

                       MICAH
I guess he's not here.

                       CHARLIE
Something's not right. Earl isn't
the kind to just up and leave
everything behind. He's got
nowhere else to go.

                       AMY
Is the door locked?

Charlie turns the door knob. The door swings open. Charlie
steps inside.

INT. TRAILER - NIGHT

Charlie stands in the doorway. He reaches for a lamp sitting
on a nearby table.

Although small, the trailer is filled to the brim. Pictures
and various other items accumulated over a lifetime fill
shelves hanging on the wall, much like the interior of the
gas station.

A small bed sits against one of the walls, untouched.

33.

Charlie frowns. There is something definitely not right.

EXT. TRAILER - NIGHT

Charlie steps out of the trailer. The group of friends look
to him, curious as to what he is looking for, and what he
may have found.

                       AMY
Did you find what you were looking
for?

                       CHARLIE
I didn't find anything.

                       AMY
What's going on? Who are you and
who are you looking for?

                       CHARLIE
My name's Charlie, and I'm looking
for my wife and my daughter.
That's my wife's car out front.

                       AMY
That was there when we got here.
Listen, did you see anyone on the
road? A tall guy. Longish hair. He
was wearing jeans and a tee shirt.

                       CHARLIE
I haven't seen anybody else out
here...except for you.

Amy faces her friends.

                       AMY
I'm telling you, guys. Something
is wrong.

Amy heads back towards the front of the store. The others
follow.

34.

                       CHARLIE
What happened to your truck?

                       MICAH
We don't know.

                       CHARLIE
How long have you been here?

                       AMY
Since early this afternoon. We
stopped to get something to drink
and that's when things started
getting strange.

                       CHARLIE
What do you mean by strange?

                       AMY
First of all, the gas station is
open, but there's nobody around.
Then, something happened to the
tires on the truck. They just
vanished. My boyfriend went to
look for help, but that was hours
ago. He's not back yet, and I'm
worried.

                       CHARLIE
Which way did he go?

The kids point down the road.

                       CHARLIE
I'll go see what I can find. Tina
and Rae might be out there, too.

                       AMY
I want to come with you.

                       CHARLIE
Fine by me. Anyone else?

                       MICAH
I'll go. (to Debra and Will) Are
you guys coming?

35.

                       DEBRA
Shouldn't we stay just in case Vic
or your wife show up?

                       CHARLIE
That's a good idea. But, you two
stay put. We'll be back soon. If
anything happens, lock yourself
inside that station.

                       WILL
What could happen?

Charlie, Amy, and Micah hop into Charlie's truck. Charlie
leans out the window.

                       CHARLIE
Just stay here, okay?

With that, the truck takes off into the night, leaving Debra
and Will there alone.

INT. CHARLIE'S TRUCK - NIGHT

                       CHARLIE
What are you kids doing out here,
anyway?

                       AMY
It was my boyfriend's idea. He
suddenly had to take this amazing
road trip. No real. Just to get
away for a while, I guess.

Micah smiles to himself, knowing the real reason. Charlie
smiles, too.

                       CHARLIE
I remember those days. Just taking
off on a random adventure just
because you can.

                       MICAH
What about you? What brings you
out to the middle of nowhere?

36.

                       CHARLIE
I grew up here. Close to here,
anyway. It's not much of a place,
but it's home.

                       AMY
How'd you know to come out to the
gas station?

                       CHARLIE
Yesterday, me and Tina got into a
huge fight. It was dumb, like
always, but that's the way it
goes, I guess. She decides she's
going to pack up and take off with
Rae.

Amy takes hold of a small picture from the dash. A picture
of Tina and Rae.

                       MICAH
Is that them?

                       CHARLIE
Yep. Those are my girls. You know,
this sin't the first time that
Tina just up and left. She'd get
so mad and just disappear. But,
she always came back in the
morning. But, not this time. I
called her mother and she hasn't
seen or heard from them.

The three ride in silence for a few moments until -

                       MICAH
Hey, there's a building up there.

All eyes look forward, out through the windshield.

A small wooden shack is visible ahead in the headlight
beams.

37.

EXT. SHACK - NIGHT

The truck comes to a stop, close the small building.
Charlie, Amy, and Micah get out.

                       CHARLIE
I didn't even know this thing was
still standing.

                       AMY
What is it?

                       CHARLIE
It's just an old shack. There was
a house built on the backside of
the property, too, but it burnt
down about 15 years ago. God, I
used to be scared shitless of this
place.

                       MICAH
Why?

                       CHARLIE
Well, there used to be this legend
that was floating around about
this place. Nothing to unusual
about that. The kind of spook
stories kids tell each other.

                       AMY
What was the story?

                       CHARLIE
Well, the story goes that this
land - the very land you're
standing on now - was once a place
used for devil worship. That and a
few other illegal activities like
drugs. A few rapes, even. This
went on or a while. Teens were
coming out here to raise hell, and
their folks were too scared of the
shitheads to stop them. But, one
day, those kids came here and
raised a little more than hell. A
lot of people died. Horrible,
            (MORE)

38.

                       CHARLIE (cont'd)
bloody deaths.

Amy and Micah look at each other. This is not a story
they're sure they want to hear. They look back at Charlie.

                       AMY
What happened to them?

                       CHARLIE
Most people think they just
freaked out on some bad shit they
were smoking. They couldn't handle
the drugs and they just started
killing each other off.

Micah looks Charlie straight in they eye. He sees doubt.

                       MICAH
But, what do you think?

                       CHARLIE
Some people think that those kids
were messing around with some bad
voodoo or something. Think they
might have brought something up
from the ground. Something they
couldn't control.

                       AMY
Up?

                       CHARLIE
From Hell.

Amy gulps. Micah smiles.

                       MICAH
People actually believe that? Do
you?

                       CHARLIE
I used to believe it enough not to
come out here when I was kid.

39.

                       MICAH
What about now?

Suddenly, a gust of wind sens the door of the shack flying
open. It hits the side of the shack with a tremendous BOOM.

Amy, Charlie, and Micah nearly jump out of their skins.

                       MICAH
Shit! That scared the hell out of
me!

                       AMY
Me too.

Charlie regains his composure, the tough guy once more. He
chuckles, and then notices something on the ground.

Charlie bends down and picks up a man's watch. He holds it
up for the others to see.

                       AMY
That's Vic's watch.

                       MICAH
We must be close to finding him.

                       AMY
No. Something's wrong. Look at it.
What's all over it?

Charlie inspects the watch. He frowns.

                       CHARLIE
It's blood.

Amy nearly faints. Micah catches her.

                       CHARLIE
Get her in the truck. Stay with
her for a few minutes.

                       MICAH
Where are you going?

40.

                       CHARLIE
I'm going to look around the
property for a bit. Maybe I can
find your friend. Maybe I can find
my girls. Just wait here. Lock the
doors.

Micah nods and helps a wobbly Amy back to the truck. Charlie
heads off past the shack, into the DARK.

INT. CHARLIE'S TRUCK - NIGHT

Micah puts an arm around Amy's shoulder, reassuring her.

                       AMY
I can't believe this.

                       MICAH
It's going to be okay. I bet Vic's
going to come around that corner
with Charlie any time now.

Micah doesn't let Amy see that he isn't quite so sure.

                       AMY
You really are a good friend. And,
I don't really hate you.

                       MICAH
You could have fooled me.

                       AMY
I'm not going to lie. I think
you're a pothead.

                       MICAH
I kind of am.

                       AMY
I also think you're stupid. How
can you still do all of that after
everything that happened? You
nearly got kicked out of school.
Arrested, even.

41.

                       MICAH
Me and Vic got out of it.

                       AMY
Vic should have never been
involved. But, he's the truest
friend you've got, so I guess it's
not surprising he was there.

                       MICAH
It wasn't my fault. He's a big boy
and he makes his own decisions. He
decided to get in on that deal. I
didn't put him up to it. Even
though you'd like to think so.

Amy looks away. She's getting agitated. This could escalate
very quickly.

                       MICAH
I'm not trying to make you mad.
I'm trying to tell you the truth.
I want to clear the air a little
bit.

Amy turns to Micah.

                       AMY
I don't want to be mad any more. I
just don't want Vic to get caught
up in all of that again. He's got
bigger things to worry about now.

                       MICAH
What are you talking about?

                       AMY
I'm pregnant.

Micah is shocked. Suddenly, things are crystal clear to him.

                       MICAH
No shit?

42.

                       AMY
No shit. No one else knows. Not
even Vic.

                       MICAH
I don't know what to say.

Suddenly, another gust of wind catches the door on the shack
again. It hit's the side with a boom.

Micah and Amy jump, looking outside.

                       MICAH
We never looked in there.

                       AMY
He wouldn't be in there, would he?

                       MICAH
I don't know.

                       AMY
He would have heard us.

                       MICAH
Not if he's unconscious.

Amy nods.

                       AMY
Okay. Let's check it out.

EXT. CHARLIE'S TRUCK - NIGHT

Micah and Amy step out of the truck and make
their way to the rickety shack.

They get to the door and peer inside. They reel from the
stench.

                       MICAH
Ugh. What the fuck died
in there?

43.

Micah holds his breath and steps inside. Amy
stands alone, waiting nervously.

                       AMY
Is anything in there?

Micah doesn't answer.

                       AMY
Micah?

Amy steps forward just as Micah emerges from within,
coughing
and gagging.

                       AMY
Are you okay?

Micah coughs.

                       MICAH
I'm fine. God, it's awful
in there. Some kind of
animal must live in there.

                       AMY
What makes you say that?

                       MICAH
For one thing, it smells
like a damn dog pen. Plus,
there's shit all over the
ground. And this.

Micah shows Amy what he holds in his hand. Wiry, matted
HAIR.

                       AMY
Micah, that's like the
hair we found on the car
back at the gas station.

Micah and Amy frown. Micah runs to the truck and starts
blaring the horn. Amy calls out into the night.

44.

                       AMY
Charlie!!!!!

EXT. GAS STATION - NIGHT

Debra and Will sit next to the SUV. The
headlights and radio are on.

                       WILL
It sure is taking them
a long time.

                       DEBRA
Yep.

                       WILL
I sure hope nothing
happened to them.

                       DEBRA
Hope not.

Will scoots closer to Debra. Their shoulders
touch.

                       DEBRA
Why are you touching me?

Will quickly makes space between them.

                       WILL
Sorry.

Suddenly, the headlights and radio shut off.

                       DEBRA
Great. That's just perfect.

                       WILL
I guess the battery died.

                       DEBRA
Oh, really? You don't say?

Debra stands up.

45.

                       WILL
Where are you going?

                       DEBRA
I'm going inside.

Debra starts for the tiny store.

                       WILL
Debra, wait.

Debra turns around, a look of annoyance on her face. Will
rises.

                       DEBRA
What?

                       WILL
I like you.

                       DEBRA
What did you say?

                       WILL
I said that I like you. I
have for a long time. The
only reason I came on this
trip is because I knew you
were coming, too.

Debra smiles.

                       DEBRA
Aw, that's sweet, Will.
But, to be honest, you
just don't stand a chance
with me. You're just not
my type. Sorry.

Will frowns. He lowers his head.

                       WILL
Oh. I get it. Rejection.
Nothing new.

46.

                       DEBRA
Listen, I'm going inside.
If you want, you can come
inside and we'll talk
about it.

                       WILL
Sure. Maybe in a minute.

Debra goes inside. Will dejectedly sits down in the dirt.

EXT. SHACK - NIGHT

Micah continues blaring the horn. Amy calls out into
the night until Charlie finally comes running out of
the darkness.

                       CHARLIE
What the hell is going on?

                       AMY
We have to get back to the
gas station, now!

Charlie is confused, not understanding the sense of
urgency in Amy's voice.

                       CHARLIE
What about your boyfriend?
I thought -

Amy holds up the hair found in the shed.

                       AMY
Does this look familiar? This
is what was stuck in the blood
on your wife's car.

INT. GAS STATION - NIGHT

Debra takes a seat behind the counter. She spots a magazine
and picks it up. The cover depicts a naked girl with large
breasts.

47.

                       DEBRA
Well, well, well. What do
we have here?

Debra starts flipping through the magazine. She stops on a
picture of a very naked woman, legs spread.

                       DEBRA
Now, this is my type.

EXT. GAS STATION - NIGHT

Will sighs heavily. He looks towards the store.

                       WILL
Not my type. The story
of my life.

Will rises, moving around to the side of the store. The
bathroom door stands partially open, the lock hanging at
an odd angle.

Will thinks nothing of it and goes inside.

INT. BATHROOM - NIGHT

The small bathroom is a mess. A single cracked mirror
hangs over a dirty sink. Bugs crawl across the floor.

Will grimaces.

                       WILL
Gross.

Will turns to the toilet, a sight too sickening for words
to describe.

                       WILL
No, thank you.

Will turns to leave and pushes the door open.

TWO HIDEOUS RED EYES PEER IN AT HIM.

48.

Will screams in terror and pulls the door closed. The
creature with the red eyes POUNDS on the outside of the
door.

                       WILL
Debra! Help me!

INT. GAS STATION - NIGHT

Debra sits, reading. She's oblivious to what's going on in
the bathroom.

INT. BATHROOM - NIGHT

The pounding suddenly stops. Will backs away, into the
stall.

INT. BATHROOM - STALL - NIGHT

Will closes the door, locking it. He climbs up atop the
toilet in a crouching position. He breathes heavily, sweat
pouring down his face in rivers.

The sound of the bathroom door opening can be heard as it
swings on a squeaky hinge.

THUD. THUD. THUD. Something moves into the room. A low growl
sounds out.

Will is on the verge of tears.

SUDDENLY, ALL GOES SILENT. Will tries his best to peek
through a tiny hole in the stall door.

JUST THEN, TWO CLAWED HANDS BUST THROUGH THE DOOR AND PULL
WILL OUTSIDE.

He screams.

INT. GAS STATION - NIGHT

Debra looks up from her magazine.

49.

                       DEBRA
What the hell? Will?

Silence. Debra turns the radio, sitting behind the
counter, off. She listens.

Nothing. Debra rises and moves to the glass door. She
looks outside.

WILL'S BODY SLAMS AGAINST THE DOOR. IT SLIDES DOWN
THE GLASS, LEAVING A BLOODY SMEAR.

Debra screams in terror, backing away. SOMETHING drags
Will's body out of sight.

Debra quickly turns the lock on the door and moves
behind the counter, ducking out of sight. She peers
over the edge of the counter top. Her breaths are short
and rapid. Tears roll down her cheeks.

Then, all at once, the lights go out. The dim moon light
coming from outside affords us what limited vision there
is.

                       DEBRA
God damn it...What's
happening?

                                         CUT TO:

INT. CHARLIE'S TRUCK - NIGHT

Charlie, Amy, and Micah look very worried as they
race back for the gas station.

Charlie puts his foot down hard on the gas pedal.

                       MICAH
Slow down. You're going to
kill us all.

Charlie is quiet at first. Hesitant.

50.

                       CHARLIE
There's something I
have to tell you both.

                       AMY
What is it?

                       CHARLIE
You know that story I told
you two back there? The one
about all of the kids getting
killed?

                       MICAH
Yeah.

                       CHARLIE
It's all true. Every last
word of it. I know someone
who saw everything that
happened that night.

Amy and Micah stare at Charlie intently, listening very
closely.

                       AMY
Who?

                       CHARLIE
Earl.

                       MICAH
The old man who runs the
gas station?

Charlie nods.

                       CHARLIE
It was late one night and
my Dad stopped at Earl's
gas station to get some gas
for work the next morning.
I rode with him. That was the
night that Earl told me about...
THEM.

51.

                                         DISSOLVE.

SUPERIMPOSE:

EXT. GAS STATION - NIGHT

EARL, 10 years younger, but still gray on top, stands
outside of his gas station. Even so long ago, the place
is still a little run down.

The sign hanging out front, however, still has all of
its lettering.

Earl looks out into the dark night as he smokes a
cigarette.

Suddenly, the quiet is interrupted by a blood curdling
scream. It's faint at first, but as a speeding vehicle
zooms by, Earl realizes that the screaming is coming from
inside of it.

                       EARL
What the hell?

Earl moves to his small white truck and climbs in. He starts
the engine and heads off in pursuit of the speeding car.

INT. EARL'S TRUCK - NIGHT

As Earl drives, he sees something ahead. The car he is
pursuing turns into a driveway. A small shack stands beside
it.

EXT. EARL'S TRUCK - NIGHT

The truck comes to a stop in front of the shack. Beyond
it stands a large white house.

Earl watches in disbelief from his truck at the terrifying
scene unfolding right before his eyes.

52.

A LARGE BONFIRE BURNS IN FRONT OF THE LARGE WHITE HOUSE.
SEVERAL FIGURE IN DARK ROBES DANCE MACABRE AROUND THE
WHIPPING FLAMES.

A naked young girl and a naked young man, both teens,
are pulled from within the car. Both their feet and hands
have been tied with a rope. The girl is crying. The
boy pleads with the dancing robed figures. It's obvious
that they are deathly afraid.

Caged animals sit nearby. A cat, a dog, and a bird.

THE ROBED LEADER COMES FORWARD, CARRYING A LARGE BOOK
WITH ANCIENT SYMBOLS ETCHED INTO ITS LEATHER COVER.

                       LEADER
And so it is time. We offer
this present of innocent,
flowing blood, our divine
Master, so that you will join
us and fulfill our darkest
desires.

                       TEEN GIRL
Please! No!

                       TEEN BOY
Don't do this!

Two robed figures silently move up the terrified teenagers
and grab them, leading them to the fire's edge. They look to

the leader.

He nods.

Without a moment's hesitation, the two teens are flung
into the fire.

They scream as their skin begins to peel and crackle.

The animals start going crazy as the robed figures grab
at their cages. The dog growls and the cat hisses.
The bird flaps its wings violently. One by one, they
are thrown into the flames.

53.

EARL watches in wide-eyed horror.

                       LEADER
It is done! Rise! Rise
and show us the way!
Rise! Give us everything
we deserve!

SUDDENLY, THE FLAMES EXPLODE INTO A WALL OF FIRE,
STRETCHING FROM ONE END OF THE PROPERTY TO THE OTHER,
REVEALING WHAT APPEARS TO BE A DOORWAY. THE DOORWAY TO
HELL, PERHAPS.

CRAWLING FROM THAT DOORWAY COMES AN EVIL NOT OF THIS
WORLD. FOUR CREATURES, SHROUDED IN SHADOW, WITH GLOWING
RED EYES, MAKE THEIR WAY OUT INTO THE NIGHT.

THEY EMERGE FROM THE FLAMES...

BLOODTHIRSTY.

The groups of robed worshipers stumble back. Their hoods
fall from their faces and it's revealed that they
are only kids themselves. And, they are terrified.

The BEASTS begin lunging at the teens, devouring them. The
ones who aren't initially attacked take off for the house,
screaming. It's a race for their lives.

The last of them close the door behind them.

The BEASTS sniff the air, turning toward the house. With
earsplitting roars they leap forward. With bird-like
agility, they soar through the air and crash through
several windows in the front of the house.

Screams erupt from inside as the slaughter begins.

BACK TO EARL.

Earl shakes his head, disbelief setting in. He moves
back to the bed of his truck and grabs a large wooden pole
and a can of gasoline. He turns for the farm house.

54.

As he passes the bonfire, he sticks the end of the pole
into the flames until it catches. He heads for the house,
torch in hand, determination in every step he takes.

                       EARL
This can't happen...This can't
happen!

Earl looks into the house through one of the broken
windows.

INT. HOUSE - NIGHT

Blood splatters the walls as the four monsters gorge
themselves on human flesh.

EXT. HOUSE - NIGHT

Earl starts splashing the gasoline along the perimeter of
the house. He touches the end of the torch to the house
and backs away as it ignites.

Earl starts running back across the property, towards his
truck. The sound of the Beasts WAILING in pain can be heard
from within the flaming house. Earl runs as fast as he can.

Earl turns to look at the house one last time. The flames
whip the black night sky.

Earl tears his eyes away from the horrific scene and climbs
into his truck. He puts the truck into REVERSE and quickly
speeds away.

                                         DISSOLVE.

INT. CHARLIE'S TRUCK - NIGHT

Amy and Micah shudder.

                       CHARLIE
Of course my Dad told me
not to believe it. But, the
mind of a child can reach the
outer limits of the imagination,

sometimes. The rest of the town
thought it was the ramblings of
a crazy old man when he tried
to tell everyone what happened.
As I got older, I started to
believe that, too.

                       AMY
What changed your mind?

                       CHARLIE
Five people have vanished
without a trace in the last
few months. And just last
week, Earl told me something.
I didn't give it much thought
at the time, but now...

                       MICAH
What? What did he say?

                       CHARLIE
I was talking to him one
day and all of a sudden he
just got this look about him.
His eyes looked kinda... I
don't know... kinda empty. And
then he says 'I've been hearing
them. They're back.'

                       AMY
And now, he's missing. So is
your family. Do you think...
it's those things?

Charlie looks at Amy and Micah.

                       CHARLIE
It might be crazy, and I
hope to God that I'm wrong,
but -

Up ahead, something catches Amy's eye.

56.

                       AMY
Oh, my God! Look out!

EXT. CHARLIE'S TRUCK - NIGHT

A tiny figure emerges from the bushes along the side of
the road, darting out in front of the truck.

INT. CHARLIE'S TRUCK - NIGHT

Charlie slams on the breaks. Amy and Micah lurch
forward.

EXT. CHARLIE'S TRUCK - NIGHT

The truck skids to a stop only inches away from the
figure. It's RAE.

Charlie, Amy, and Micah exit the truck and move around to
see.

Charlie grabs his little girl, holding her tightly in his
two strong arms. She cries into his shoulder.

                       CHARLIE
Rae, sweetie? It's okay.

                       RAE
      (sobbing)
Daddy... Dad - Dad -
It -

                       CHARLIE
What happened, baby? Where's
Mommy?

                       RAE
It was mon - mon -
MONSTERS!

Charlie, Amy, and Micah exchange worried looks. Charlie
clings tightly to his daughter, kissing her on the
forehead.

57.

                       MICAH
Look, I don't mean to interrupt
this reunion, but I think we
should go.

Charlie nods.

                       CHARLIE
He's right. We should go.
Come on, baby. You're safe
now.

INT. CHARLIE'S TRUCK - NIGHT

Amy, Micah, Charlie, and Rae climb into the truck.
Rae takes a seat on Amy's lap. Amy smiles at her.

                       AMY
Hi, my name is Amy. What's
your name?

                       RAE
      (monotone;dazed)
I'm Rae.

                       AMY
That's a pretty name.

Charlie shifts into DRIVE and the truck moves forward
with a jolt.

Charlie glances at his daughter as he drives, worried.

Micah points forward.

                       MICAH
There's the gas station.

                       AMY
Great. (to Rae) We'll be
safe here.

AT THAT INSTANT, SOMETHING SMASHES INTO THE WINDSHIELD WITH
GREAT FORCE. THE GLASS CRACKS.

58.

Amy, Micah, Rae, and Charlie scream in terror as they
realize it's a body. WILL'S BODY.

EXT. CHARLIE'S TRUCK - NIGHT

The truck swerves off the road and smashes into the SUV
by the pumps.

All passengers jumps out, running to examine the body.
It's nearly mutilated beyond recognition.

                       MICAH
Holy shit!

                       AMY
Oh, God! Oh, God! This
can't be happening.

                       CHARLIE
Listen, Amy.

Amy turns to Charlie, her grief-stricken face beginning
to show the signs of shock.

Charlie places a comforting hand on her shoulder. Rae
clings tightly around his neck.

                       CHARLIE
Don't fall to pieces. We
have to stay focused. Let'
go inside and see if the
other girl is alright.

                       MICAH
Debra.

                       CHARLIE
Right. Debra. I don't know
if she's still alive or not,
but we're going to find out.
Then, we're getting the hell
out of here. Okay?

Amy, starting to sob, nods in agreement.

59.

                       AMY
Okay...

Amy's answer can barely be heard over the LOUD ROAR
that sounds out from somewhere in the darkness. The
group stiffens in fear and Amy really begins to fall
apart.

                       AMY
We're gonna die. I know it.
We're gonna die.

                       CHARLIE
Everyone, inside - NOW!

                       MICAH
You don't have to tell me
twice.

Charlie and Micah quickly lead Amy to the gas station,
only to find the door is locked. It won't budge.

                       CHARLIE
Fuck!

Charlie pounds on the door. Somewhere nearby, something
moves across the dirt, grunting.

                       CHARLIE
Debra, are you in there?
If you are, open the door!

THROUGH THE GLASS, we see Debra peek from behind the
counter. From here we can see her fearful eyes just
above the counter top.

                       MICAH
Deb! Come on!

INT. GAS STATION - NIGHT

No! I'm scared!

                       CHARLIE

We all are. It's okay.

Debra thinks for a moment.

                       CHARLIE
No. I can't! It'll get in!

EXT. GAS STATION - NIGHT

The thing in the darkness grunts more loudly. GETTING
CLOSER.

Amy pounds furiously on the door.

                       AMY
God damn it! Debra, open this
fucking door!

INT. GAS STATION - NIGHT

Debra hesitates momentarily, then finally moves to
the door.

As soon as the door is unlocked, Amy, Micah, Charlie,
and Rae shove their way inside.

Charlie locks the door. He glances outside, then turns
to Debra.

                       CHARLIE
What happened?

                       DEBRA
There's something out
there! Will's dead!

                       MICAH
Yeah...We know.

61.

                       CHARLIE
What kind of THING? Did you
see what it looked like or
anything?

                       DEBRA
No. All I saw was - was -
was -

Debra breaks down into tears. Amy wraps her arms
around her, crying as well.

                       RAE
Daddy, I'm scared.

Debra breaks down into tears. Amy wraps her arms
around her, crying as well.

                       RAE
Daddy, I'm scared.

                       CHARLIE
It's okay, baby. You're
safe.

                       MICAH
What are we going to do?

                       CHARLIE
We need to get out to
the truck and get the
hell out of here.

Debra breaks away from Amy. She shakes her head.

                       DEBRA
Are you fucking insane?
There's no way I'm going
out there!

                       AMY
Debra, we can't stay here.

feet away. We can make
it.

                       MICAH
He's right. We'll be out of
here before you know it. I'll
even go firs, okay?

                       DEBRA
This isn't a good idea.

                       MICAH
I'll be fine. You'll see.

Micah unlocks the door, slowly and unsure. He looks
back at the others.

                       MICAH
Alright. Here goes nothing.

EXT. GAS STATION - NIGHT

Micah steps out onto the dusty lot. He takes not more
than a step when -

SOMETHING DROPS DOWN BEFORE HIM FROM THE ROOF. FOR
THE FIRST TIME, THE BEAST IS FULLY REVEALED.

Through the glass, everyone stares wide-eyed at the
monstrosity.

RED, CAT-LIKE EYES BURNING WITH HUNGER GLARE DOWN
AT THE TERRIFIED MICAH. SALIVA RUNS IN A STEADY
STREAM FROM THE CORNERS OF IT'S MOUTH, LINED WITH
JAGGED ROWS OF BLOOD-STAINED FANGS.

THROUGH IT'S LARGE, DOG-LIKE SNOUT, HOT AIR BILLOWS
FROM THE NOSTRILS IN THE COOL NIGHT AIR.

THE CREATURE STANDS ON TWO MUSCULAR LEGS. FUR COVERS

63.

THE ENTIRE BODY. PIECES OF IT STICK TOGETHER WHERE
BLOOD HAS DRIED.

TALON-LIKE CLAWS EXTEND FROM THE ENDS OF THE TWISTED
FINGERS.

INT. GAS STATION - NIGHT

Debra locks the door.

                       AMY
Oh, my God.

EXT. GAS STATION - NIGHT

The Beast sniffs at Micah. A low, growl comes from deep
within. Micah slowly reaches into his pocket and pulls
out his bag of pot.

INT. GAS STATION - NIGHT

                       DEBRA
What the hell is he doing?
Perfect time to toke it up.

                       AMY
Wait. Watch.

EXT. GAS STATION - NIGHT

The Beast sniffs at the bag, intrigued by the
scent.

                       MICAH
You like that smell?

The Beast licks the bag. Micah tosses it to the
side. The monster runs after it, like a dog would
chase after a toy.

64.

                       MICAH
Then go fetch, you ugly
bitch.

INT. GAS STATION - NIGHT

                       CHARLIE
Smart kid.

EXT. GAS STATION - NIGHT

Micah takes his opportunity to run for it. He heads
back for the gas station when suddenly - and quite
unexpectedly - A SECOND BEAST drops down before him.

Micah screams as the roaring monster lifts him into the
air and tosses him against the door of the station.

Micah's head hits the glass hard, leaving a smear of
blood. He groans in pain, but manages to rise to his
feet. He turns, trying to open the door. It won't
budge.

                       MICAH
Help me! God damn it!
Open the door!

EXT. GAS STATION - NIGHT

The others, frozen in fear, dare not move. Except for
Amy. She fumbles with the handle, but is too late.

EXT. GAS STATION - NIGHT

With a deafening road, the Beast leaps on Micah.

His friends watch in horror as he is literally torn
to shreds. For what seems like an eternity, his body
is reduced to nothing more than a quivering mass.

Through the blood-smeared glass, the others watch as

the Beast drags away the remains. The first monster
joins the other and begins to eat.

INT. GAS STATION - NIGHT

For a moment, there is silence. Then, as the realization
of what has just taken place hits home, they scream in
unison.

                       DEBRA
Oh, God! What are we going to
do?

                       CHARLIE
First, let's forget about
getting to the truck. Second,
let's check for all possible
ways into this store. There's
a back door, I know for sure.

Charlie, Rae, and the two girls move quickly toward
the back.

INT. GAS STATION - BACK ROOM - NIGHT

Charlie checks a heavy iron door. A large wooden beam has
been placed inside of two brackets on either side of
the door.

                       AMY
Will that hold?

                       CHARLIE
I don't know.

                       DEBRA
What do you mean? You
don't know? Will it keep
those fuckers out of not?

                       CHARLIE
Like I said. I don't know.
Hopefully, we won't have to
find out.

66.

                       AMY
How long do we have to stay
here?

                       CHARLIE
Long enough to let thos
things lose interest in
us.

                       AMY
What if they don't?

                       CHARLIE
Well, if they don't... I
don't know.

WE FOCUS ON A CLOCK, HANGING ON THE WALL.

10:00

EXT. GAS STATION - NIGHT

All is still. The night is quiet. The beasts are nowhere
to be seen.

INT. GAS STATION - BACK ROOM - NIGHT

The clock on the wall :

11:30

INT. GAS STATION - FRONT - NIGHT

Time has passed. Charlie stands guard at the door. Rae
sits with Amy and Debra in a huddle behind the counter.

                       DEBRA
Do you see anything?

                       CHARLIE
Nothing. Wait - I see some-
thing.

67.

                       AMY
What is it?

                       CHARLIE
I think it's a car
coming.

Debra jumps up.

                       DEBRA
Praise fucking Jesus!

EXT. GAS STATION - NIGHT

A car pulls onto the dusty lot, stopping not to far from
the trashed SUV.

A young man and a young woman step out of the vehicle.
They survey the scene around them.

                       MAN
Holy shit. What the hell
happened here?

                       WOMAN
I don't know, but it doesn't
look good. Maybe we should
call the police.

                       MAN
You can try, but I doubt
you'll get a signal out
here.

The door to the gas station opens, and Charlie steps
out.

                       CHARLIE
Excuse me.

                       MAN
Are you alright? What
happened?

68.

                       CHARLIE
I don't really have time to
explain. I have two women
and a little girl inside and
we need to get out of here.
Can you help us?

The woman moves to investigate the bloody remains of
Micah. Not much has been left.

She leans down to get a better look. A piece of Micah's
face stares up at her.

The woman screams in terror.

                       WOMAN
Oh my God! What did that?!

                       CHARLIE
I'll tell you everything if
you can just help us get out
of here.

                       MAN
No way, brother. How do
we know that you didn't
do that?

                       CHARLIE
PLEASE! LISTEN TO ME!

SUDDENLY, LIKE A BAT OUT OF HELL -

ONE OF THE BEASTS RUSHES IN FROM THE SIDE, TAKING
BOTH THE MAN AND WOMAN BY SURPRISE. IN ONE SWIFT
MOVE, THEY ARE TAKEN DOWN.

They scream in terror and pain as the Beast slashes
them with it's claws. It bites down into their flesh.
Blood spews forth in a horrific fountain.

Charlie rushes back into the gas station, closing the door
behind him.

69.

INT. GAS STATION - FRONT - NIGHT

Charlie, Amy, and Debra stare at the horror outside. Rae
clings tightly to Charlie's legs, hiding her eyes.

                       DEBRA
Oh, fuck. We're going to
fucking die.

                       CHARLIE
I think it's done.

The girls look.

EXT. GAS STATON - NIGHT

The Beast rips one final piece of meat from the man and
woman's bodies and slowly moves off into the darkness, it's
hunger satisfied for the moment.

What's left behind is merely an abstract version of the
human form.

INT. GAS STATION - FRONT - NIGHT

                       DEBRA
I think you're right.

                       AMY
What do we do now?

                       CHARLIE
Have you noticed something?

                       AMY
What?

                       CHARLIE
They get kind of slow after
they...eat.

                       DEBRA
Yeah. They go away for a while.

70.

                       CHARLIE
Those two unfortunate individuals
might have just given us a lucky
break.

                       AMY
What are you saying?

                       CHARLIE
I think we can make a run
for it. But, I need to check
on something first.

Charlie moves towards the back of the store. Amy, Debra,
and Rae follow him.

INT. GAS STATION - BACK ROOM - NIGHT

Charlie removes the wooden beam from the iron door.

                       AMY
What are you doing?

                       CHARLIE
I'm back to Earl's
trailer.

                       AMY
For what?

EXT. GAS STATION - BACK DOOR - NIGHT

Charlie, Rae, Amy, and Debra step out into the night. They
look around. The coast is clear.

                       CHARLIE
Okay. Come on.

The groups moves quickly along the side of the building
and hurry to the trailer.

71.

INT. TRAILER - NIGHT

The door opens. Charlie and the girls enters the
trailer.

Charlie lifts the mattress off of the bed. Placed
beneath it is a large shotgun.

                       DEBRA
How'd you know where to find
that?

                       CHARLIE
Earl once told me that you
never know when something
was out to get you, so it was
best to keep a gun under your
bed. Good thing, I remembered.

                       AMY
Well, good. You got it, so
let's go. The sooner we get
to the truck, the sooner we
get the hell out of here. Are
you ready?

Charlie checks to see if the gun is loaded. It is.

                       CHARLIE
I am now.

EXT. TRAILER - NIGHT

The group of four cautiously make their way around the
side of the gas station. Charlie leads the pack, the shot
gun ready for a surprise attack.

They reach the truck and climb inside.

INT. TRUCK - NIGHT

Charlie turns the key in the ignition. It groans but
doesn't start.

72.

                       CHARLIE
Come on, girl. Don't do
this to me now.

                       DEBRA
Perfect. Just perfect.

Charlie turns the key again. The engine moans and groans
again. Outside, just beyond the edge of the store,
there is movement.

                       AMY
Oh, God. I think they're
coming back.

Charlie turns the key again. This time, the truck's
engine roars to life.

                       CHARLIE
Yes!

Charlie shifts into drive.

SUDDENLY, one of the Beasts appears at the driver side
window. The truck's occupants scream in terror as the
clawed hand smashed through the glass.

Charlie slams the truck into PARK and ducks as the claws
tear into the seat where his head was only moments
before.

The girls frantically climb out of the other side.
Charlie follows, gun in hand.

They run as fast as their legs will allow. They reach
the front door, forgetting it's locked. We follow as
they fun around the side of the building, nearly plowing
into the SECOND BEAST.

It roars, lunging at them. Screaming, they jump to the
side, out of the way. The monster regroups and rushes
for them.

Somehow, they manage to reach the rear entrance. They
hurry inside, but Charlie turns back.

73.

                       AMY
Where are you going? Are
you crazy?

                       CHARLIE
They took my wife!

                       DEBRA
They'll kill you!

Charlie turns to Debra, deadly intent on his face. The Beast
approaches from behind, hunger in its eyes.

                       CHARLIE
Not if I kill them first.

Charlie turns and aims.

BLAM! The impact of the gun shot sends the monster flying
to the ground. It lies still. Lifeless.

Charlie lowers the gun and watches the creature for
any sign of life.

                       CHARLIE
One down.

                       DEBRA
You got the son of a
bitch!

Amy and Debra hug joyously, Rae in between them.

Charlie turns to the three girls. They turns to look
his way.

POV THROUGH THE DOORWAY, BEHIND CHARLIE -

EXT. GAS STATION - BACK DOOR - NIGHT

Out of the shadows, the second beast slowly moves to its
fallen companion. It howls, dragging the body away into
the darkness.

74.

INT. GAS STATION - BACK ROOM - NIGHT

                       CHARLIE
One more to go.

Charlie starts to head back outside.

                       RAE
Daddy, don't go. Stay with
me.

Charlie nods and closes the door. He places the bar
back into the brackets just as SOMETHINGS SLAMS INTO
IT WITH A TREMENDOUS THUD.

                       CHARLIE
Shit! It's trying to get in!

BAM! The iron door bends inward. The wooden beam is
cracking. The animal pounds against the door again and
again.

                       CHARLIE
It's not going to hold! Get
back!

The girls move behind Charlie. He raises the gun and
aims just as -

The pounding stops. There is silence.

                       AMY
It stopped.

                       CHARLIE
It's playing with us.

Debra shakes with fear.

Outside, we can hear the distinct sound of scraping claws
against the side of the building.

                       DEBRA
It's going to get in here and
kill all of us!

75.

                       CHARLIE
We'll be fine.

                       DEBRA
      (sarcastically)
This is coming from the man
who almost lost his head.

                       CHARLIE
That's right. Almost.

                       AMY
We can't leave. That thing
is out there.

                       DEBRA
Do you see that door? In
a few minutes, it's going
to be in here! Screw all of
you!

Debra takes of for the front of the store. Amy, Charlie,
and Rae follow.

INT. GAS STATION - FRONT - NIGHT

Debra is just about to the door when it SHATTERS INTO
A MILLION PIECES AS THE BEAST JUMPS THROUGH THE
GLASS.

Debra screams as its two powerful hands lift her into
the air. Her legs kick at the creature's solid body with
no effect. It growls, lowering its face to her own.

The long tongue licks Debra's face.

                       DEBRA
      (defiant)
Bite me, you son of a
bitch!

With a sickening crunch, that's just what it
does. With a spray of gore, it bites her face off.

Brain matter oozes to the ground with a SPLAT.

76.

Amy and Charlie retch. Charlie holds Rae close to him. They
back away towards the rear of the store.

                       CHARLIE
We have to go...NOW.

INT. GAS STATION - BACK ROOM - NIGHT

Charlie removes the splintered wood beam from the door.
He pushes against the iron, but it won't budge.

                       CHARLIE
It's jammed.

He tries again.

INT. GAS STATION - FRONT - NIGHT

The monster tosses Debra aside like a rag doll and
starts for the back.

INT. GAS STATION - BACK ROOM - NIGHT

Amy turns to look, her eyes widening.

INT. GAS STATION - FRONT - NIGHT

The Beast approaches, roaring with each heavy step.

INT. GAS STATION - BACK ROOM - NIGHT

                       AMY
Oh, God! It's coming!

Charlie tries the door again. It gives just a little.

INT. GAS STATION - FRONT - NIGHT

The creature moves closer.

INT. GAS STATION - BACK ROOM - NIGHT

                       RAE
Hurry, Daddy!

                       AMY
Charlie, hurry!

Charlie pushes the door again. This time, it gives.

                       CHARLIE
Let's go!

EXT. GAS STATION - BACK DOOR - NIGHT

Amy, Charlie, and Rae take off running, the Beast in
hot pursuit.

Teeth bared, the monster growls, increasing speed. Steam
billows from its nostrils.

It swipes at Amy's back, ripping her shirt.

The three remaining survivors dart past the vehicles and
run out into the road.

                       AMY
Leave us alone! God, please!

The monster is gaining. Charlie turns, handing Rae to Amy.
He
aims the shot gun, but is not quick enough. The monster
tackles
him.

Charlie loses his grip on the gun. It goes flying, landing
into the dirt. The monster slashes as Charlie with its
claws.

SUDDENLY, A GROWLING OFF SCREEN BRINGS PAUSE TO THE BEAST'S
VICIOUS ATTACK. IT TURNS TO LOOK WITH ITS TWO EVIL EYES>

BEAST'S POV -

The large yellow dog stands there, TEETH BARED, ready to

attack.

It leaps at the beast, sinking its teeth into the hairy
body. The beast howls, backing off of Charlie, fighting
with the heroic dog.

The dog bares its teeth, biting into the muscular beast.
The beast growls at its attacker, twirling madly.

                       AMY
Charlie!

Charlie is bleeding badly. He is nearly gone, it seems.

                       RAE
Daddy!

With a whimper, the dog flies to the ground. The battle is
lost. Its body lies limply in the dirt.

The Beast turns back to Charlie. Amy lunges at it in a
moment of adrenaline-induced bravery.

With one swipe of its hand, it sends her flying to the
ground...NEXT TO THE SHOTGUN.

Charlie screams in terror as the monster advances.

Amy takes hold of the gun, rising. She aims.

                       AMY
Hey, you ugly mother fucker!

The Beast stops and turns to look at the girl.

                       AMY
Say cheese!

BLAM! Amy pulls the trigger.

Half of the Beast's head is blown away in a spray of
black blood.

The monster sways for a moment, then topples to the
side.

79.

Charlie coughs, bleeding badly from his wounds. Amy
and Rae kneel at his side. Charlie looks very bad
off.

                       AMY
Are you okay?

Charlie nods. He coughs.

                       CHARLIE
Thank you.

                       AMY
For what?

                       CHARLIE
For saving me and my
little girl. Who would
have thought?

Amy smiles.

                       AMY
I guess I'm tougher than I
look.

                       CHARLIE
You got that right.

Rae hugs Charlie tightly. Amy turns to look at the Beast.
It appears to be quite dead.

Amy turns back to Charlie and Rae.

                       AMY
Do you think you can stand?

                       CHARLIE
I can try.

Amy helps Charlie rise to his feet. He, Amy, and Rae slowly
start to walk away from the station. The sun is starting to
rise.

UP AHEAD -

80.

A figure appears, walking toward them, limping.

                       CHARLIE
Who the hell?

Amy looks. Her face lights up with joy and relief.

                       AMY
Oh my God...Vic!

VIC, badly cut up and bruised, meets them on the road. Amy
embraces him.

                       AMY
I thought you were dead! How
did you -

Vic pulls out his now bloodied knife.

                       VIC
I told you...I wasn't afraid.

Amy kisses Vic on the lips. They look deeply into
each other's eyes, very much in love.

Charlie smiles, holding on to his daughter.

Vic pulls away from Amy and looks down at Rae.

                       VIC
Hey, short stuff. I'm glad
you're okay.

Vic turns back to Amy.

                       VIC
How are you still alive?

                       AMY
I have a good reason to
live.

Amy brings Vic's hand down to her stomach. She smiles
at him. His eyes widen in surprise.

81.

                       VIC
You mean -

Amy nods. Vic smiles.

                       VIC
I love you.

                       AMY
I love you, too.

Vic pulls Amy into his chest, caressing her hair.

                       VIC
What about everyone
else? Did they make
it?

Amy sadly shakes her head.

                       VIC
Let's get the hell out of
here. I am sick and tired
of the god damn country.

                       CHARLIE
You and me, both.

The group of survivors walk slowly away as the sun rises
high in the sky.

THE BEAST LIES, LIFELESS, IN THE DIRT. We move in close.

SUDDENLY, ITS ONE REMAINING EYE OPENS AND WE

                                         CUT TO BLACK.
