singing happy birthday fades in. They cheer. |

Alright, are you ready to open
your presents, Katie? |

Yes, yes, Mommy, yes! |

KATIE'S DAD
How about this one, Sweetie? |

No, this one! Please, I want to
open this one! |

KATIE'S MOM
(Laughing)
Ok, honey, go ahead. |

The sound of ripping paper. |
|
|

Katie pulls JOJO(STUFFED ANIMAL) out of the box and sets her
on the floor. JOJO(HUMAN) and Katie stare at each other. |
|

A beat. |

|

KATIE(5)
(Shreiking)
I love it, I love it! |
|
|
|
Katie hugs Jojo(Stuffed Animal). Jojo(Human) hugs her back.
They pull away. |

Katie hugs Jojo(Human). |

EXT. BACKYARD - DAY |
|
|
Katie runs out of the house carrying Jojo(Stuffed Animal),
an arm-full of toys, and a blanket. She drops the toys, sets
Jojo(Stuffed Animal) down, and unfolds the blanket. |

KATIE(5)
You take that end. |
|
|
|
Jojo(Human) stands up takes the opposite corners of the
blanket. They lower it onto the grass. |
|
|
| |
KATIE(5)
Hm... this needs something else. |
|
|
|

|
|
|
|
Katie runs back into the house. A moment later, she
reappears carrying china teacups, saucers, and tea pot. |
|
|
| |
JOJO(HUMAN)
Woah! Real tea cups! |
|
|
|
| |
KATIE(5)
Yeah! They're Mommy's. |
|
|
|
|
Katie starts setting up the China up on the blanket. |
|
|
| |
JOJO(HUMAN)
And she doesn't mind that you're
using them? |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
| |
JOJO(HUMAN)
Oh, good. I wouldn't want her to
get mad. |
|
|
|
Katie finishes setting up the china. She takes two dresses
from the pile, one that's hers and one that is obviously her
mom's. She pulls her mom's dress over her clothes. |

KATIE(5)
(while putting on
the dress)
Why would she get mad? We'll put
them back when we're done. |
|
|
|
|
Katie walks over to Jojo(Human). |
|
|
| |
KATIE(5)
Here. I could only get one of
Mom's dresses, so you can use
mine. |
|
|
|
| |
JOJO(HUMAN)
Oh, thank you. |
|
|
|
Katie walks over to Jojo(Human), tripping over the long
dress, and helps her pull the dress over her head. |
|
|

KATIE(5)
There! Now we are ladies! |

Katie and Jojo(Human) flop down in front of the teacups.
Katie picks up her teacup and raises it up. |
|
|

Jojo(Human) raises her teacup. |

Katie and Jojo(Human) clink the teacups and pretend to take
sips out of them. |
|

JOJO(HUMAN)
I like you. Why wouldn't they? |
|
|
|

Katie sits against the wall. Jojo(Human) sits next to her. |

I don't know. I want to go home. |
|
|

I don't. Remember when we came in
and met the teacher? |

|

Remember all the fun things she
promised? Like learning and
singing and playing games? Don't

Well, yeah. But what if I mess up? |

Then I'll mess up right along with
you. |
|

Katie stands up. |

Okay, I'm ready. |

Katie takes Jojo's hand and pulls her up. |

|

JOJO(HUMAN)
Good. Then let's go. |

Katie takes a deep breath and walks into the classroom
holding Jojo(Stuffed Animal) by the arm. |
|
|

|
INT. CLASSROOM - MORNING |
|
|
May, Alyssa, Carly, and Emma sit in a circle on the floor
talking indistinctly. Katie and Jojo(Human) approach them. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
The talking stops abruptly. Alyssa, Carly, and Emma stare as
Katie takes a seat in the circle. She puts Jojo(Stuffed
Animal) next to her. |
|
|

KATIE(10)
What are you guys talking about? |
|
|
|
Jojo(Human) squirms uncomfortably under Alyssa, Carly, and
Emma's stares. |

MAY
Oh, we were just talking about
that new movie that just- |

ALYSSA
(snotty)
Hey, Katie? |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Alyssa, Carly, and Emma exchange glances. |
|
|

ALYSSA
How long are you going to carry
that bear around? |
|
|

ALYSSA
I mean, don't you think you're a
little old to be carrying that
thing around? |
|
|
|

ALYSSA
It's a baby's toy, and we don't
want to be around a baby. |
|

Katie stares, shocked. Carly and Emma nod in agreement. |
|
|

CARLY
Yeah. Get rid of it or leave. |
|

Katie looks down at Jojo(Stuffed Animal). |
|
|

KATIE(5)
But... I thought you guys liked
Jojo. |
|
|

ALYSSA
Well, we did when we were little.
But we're older now, and older
kids don't play with baby toys. |
|
|
|
Fighting tears, Katie picks up Jojo(stuffed Animal), runs
back to her desk, and stuffs her in her backpack. |
|

(whispering)
I'm sorry. |

|

KATIE(5)
Katie runs to join her friends,
leaving Jojo(Stuffed Animal)
peering out of the backpack. |

INT. KATIE'S BEDROOM - NIGHT |
|
|
The room is dark. Katie and Jojo(Human) are sitting side by
side on Katie's bed. Katie's Mom and Katie's Dad are
fighting loudly in the other room. |

Did I do something wrong? |

|

JOJO(HUMAN)
What do you mean? |

|

Dad said that him and Mom aren't
going to be together anymore. |

But maybe if I had done something
different then maybe they would
still love each other and we could
still be a family. |

A pause. |

JOJO(HUMAN)
I don't think you could have done
anything differently. If they've
stopped loving each other, it's
their fault. Not your's. |
|

Something shatters in the other room, and the fighting stops
abruptly. A door slams. |
|
|

KATIE(10)
You won't stop loving me, right? |
|
|

Jojo(Human)hugs Katie. |
|
|

INT. KATIE'S BEDROOM - AFTERNOON |
|

Katie(15) runs into the room, squealing and jumping around.
Jojo(Stuffed Animal) sits on the shelf. Katie fumbles for
her phone, and dials her friend. She bounces on her heals as
the phone rings. |

(On the phone)
Ryan said he liked me! |
|

Jojo(Human) looks up, startled, from her spot on the shelf. |
|
|

KATIE (15)
(On the phone)
I know! He likes me, he likes me,
oh my god, he likes me!

Jojo(Human) stares wide-eyed at Katie. |

(On the phone)
I was just on the phone with him
and he said that he liked me and
that he wanted me to come over and
he's picking me up in like twenty
minutes!
(listens)
Oh my god, twenty minutes. You're
right, I have to go! He's gonna be
here in twenty minutes, I have to
get ready!
(listens)

Katie hangs up the phone and starts jumping around. She
grabs Jojo (Stuffed Animal), hugs her, and twirls around. |

Katie puts Jojo(Stuffed Animal) back on the shelf. |
|
|

JOJO(HUMAN)
(sadly)
I'm happy for you. |

Jojo(human) watches as Katie runs to her dresser and grabs
an armful of clothes. Jojo(human) watches Katie rush out of
the room. Jojo(Stuffed Animal) sits on the shelf, forgotten. |

INT. KATIE'S BEDROOM - DAY |
|
|
Katie(Adult) is packing her things into boxes. Jojo(Human)
watches her sadly.
She closes up the box. |

|

KATIE(ADULT)
(to herself)
There. |

Katie picks up the box. |
|
|

Mom! I've finished packing! |
|
|

Jojo(Human) jumps. |

(panicking)

Katie heads for the door. |

Wait! |

Jojo(Human) leans forward, causing her to fall from the
shelf.
Katie turns and sees Jojo(Stuffed Animal) lying on the
floor. She sets down the box, walks over, and picks up
Jojo(Stuffed Animal). |

KATIE(ADULT)
What are you doing on the floor? |
|
|
|
After a long pause, she sets Jojo(Stuffed Animal) on the
box. Jojo(Human) sighs in relief.
Katie picks up the box and Jojo(Stuffed Animal) and carries
them out of the room. |

INT. KATIE'S LIVINGROOM - AFTERNOON |
|
|
Katie(Adult) and RYAN sit on the couch. Jojo(Stuffed Animal)
sits on the coffee table. |

You're so weird, Ryan! |
|
|

Jojo(Human) watches Ryan with distaste. |
|
|

Good. I'll go get the menu. |

Katie gets up from the couch and exits the room.
Once she's gone, Ryan pulls a small box out of his jacket. |

JOJO(HUMAN)
What is that? |

|

Ryan opens the box to reveal a ring. |
|
|

JOJO(HUMAN)
That better not be what I think it
is. |

|
|
|
Ryan kneels on the ground. |

(stern)

|

Katie enters the room. |

Katie stares at Ryan for a few beats. |
|

|

Katie drops the menu and her cell phone and presses her
hands to her face. |
|
|

KATIE(ADULT)

(crying)
Yes! |

Ryan stands up. |

Katie runs into Ryan's arms and he lifts her up. |

Of course, you moron! |

Jojo(Human) pouts on the coffee table. Ryan spins Katie and
they fall in a heap on the floor, laughing. Jojo(Human)
smiles as Katie kisses Ryan on the lips. |

INT. KATIE'S KITCHEN - DAY |
|
|
Katie(Adult), pregnant, stands behind the counter mixing
batter. Jojo(Stuffed Animal) sits on the counter.
Katie hums to herself as Jojo(Human) stares off into space. |

KATIE(ADULT)
(singing softly)
I'm gonna be a mommy, I'm gonna be
a mommy. |
|
|
|
Katie sets the bowl down and samples it. After a pause, she
picks up the bowl, takes a large spoonful, and eats it. |
|

KATIE(ADULT)
(through food)
Jojo, I'm gonna be so fat when
this is over. |
|
|
|
Jojo(Human) startles from her trance and stares wide-eyed at
Katie. |
|
|
|
|

|
|
Katie takes another large bite from the batter. |
|
|

KATIE(ADULT)
Yup. I'm gonna be a hippo.
But that's okay. It doesn't matter
now that I'm married. |
|

|

JOJO(HUMAN)
(chuckling)
Yeah. You chose well. |
|
|

Katie stares at Jojo(Stuffed Animal) for second.
She then breaks eye contact as she gasps, slams the bowl
down, and clutches her stomach. |
|
|
| |
KATIE(ADULT)
She moved. She kicked, oh my
goodness, she kicked! |
|
|
|
|
Katie sits on a chair in front of Jojo(Human). |
|
|
| |
KATIE'S MOM
My baby kicked. I'm gonna be a
mommy, Jojo! |
|

JOJO(HUMAN)
I know, I can't wait! |

Katie smiles at Jojo(Stuffed Animal). Jojo(Human) slumps
sadly. |

Katie caresses her stomach. Jojo(Stuffed Animal) sits on the

INT. KATIE'S LIVING ROOM - CONTINUOUS |

|
|
Katie(Adult) rocks EMILY(BABY) as she paces around the room.
Jojo(Stuffed Animal) sits on the coffee table. Jojo(Human)
tries to peek a glance at the baby as Katie walks past. Ryan
enters the scene and hugs Katie from behind. |

|
Emily(Toddler) crawls up to the coffee table and pulls
Jojo(Stuffed Animal) down by the foot. Jojo(Human) lands
next to Emily. Katie enters the scene and puts Jojo(Stuffed
Animal) back on the coffee table. Jojo(Human) glares at her. |
|
|
Emily(Toddler) runs across the living room followed by Ryan,
who chases after her playfully. He catches her and scoops
her into a hug. Jojo(Human) is laughing from the coffee
table. |
|
|
Ryan and Emily are asleep on the couch and Jojo(Stuffed
Animal) sits on the coffee table. Jojo(Human) watches Katie
enter the room and lay a blanket over them. She pats
Jojo(Stuffed Animal) on the head as she leaves. |
|

Katie sits on the couch knitting. Emily(Toddler) sits next
to her, fiddling with string and knitting needles.
Jojo(Human) watches Emily with amusement. |
|
|
Ryan enters the room, having just come home from work. Katie
runs to greet him and Emily(Toddler) follows behind her. As
Katie and Ryan hug, Emily reaches up to them. They bend down
and scoop her into a group hug. |

END MONTAGE |

INT. KATIE'S LIVING ROOM - NIGHT |
|
|
The room is dark. And anxious Katie(Adult) sits on the
couch.
Jojo(Stuffed Animal) sits next to her.
The phone rings, and Katie scrambles to pick it up.
Jojo(Human) watches her intently. |

Hello?
(listens) |

Katie visibly slouches, and Jojo(Human) perks up in concern. |
|

Jojo(Human) watches as Katie cries silently. |

Katie hangs up the phone, her hand lingering on the
receiver. |

Oh, Katie. |

Katie picks Jojo(Stuffed Animal) off the couch. She falls
the the floor, curls around her, and cries.
Jojo(Human) hugs her back. |

INT. KATIE'S BEDROOM - EVENING |
|
|
The room is dim. Jojo(Stuffed Animal) sits in the middle of
Katie and Ryan's bed.
Katie(Adult) stumbles into the room and sits on the edge of
the bed. Her hair is gone, and she wears a silk bandanna in
its place. |

JOJO(HUMAN)
(Concerned)
Katie? |
|
|

Ryan enters the room. |
|

KATIE(ADULT)
Yeah. I'm fine. I'm just tired, is
all. I need to rest. |

RYAN
Okay, we can go to bed early. |

RYAN
I can do them tomorrow though.
It's not that big a deal- |

No. It's okay, really. I'll be

A pause. |

Katie stands up and kisses Ryan on the lips. |

Ryan hugs Katie then helps her sit back down. Ryan leaves
the room. Once he's gone, Katie starts to cry. Jojo(Human)
offers her a hug, and Katie crawls over to her. |

(whispering)
It's not fair. |

JOJO(HUMAN)
No, it isn't. |

her sadly, then carries her out of the room. |

|
Emily sits on the edge of her bed, dressed in black. Ryan
enters the room carrying Jojo(Stuffed Animal) and sits next
to her. |

Ryan pets Emily's hair. There is a moment of silence. |
|
|
|
|
|

| |
EMILY
Are we ever going to see mommy
again? |

Ryan takes a deep breath and sets Jojo(Stuffed Animal)
aside. He opens his arms. |
|
|

Emily crawls onto his lap and Ryan hugs her. |

Mommy... Mommy isn't here anymore. |

EMILY
But why? Didn't she love us? |
|

RYAN
Oh, Honey. Of course she did. She
loved you more than anything in
the world. |

Then why did she leave? |
|

RYAN
Because Mommy was very sick. She
couldn't stay in her body anymore. |
|

RYAN
A good place. A very good place. |
|

No. No, not yet. But one day. One
day, you'll get to see her again. |
|

EMILY

Ryan pulls away and looks at her, brushing the hair out of
her face. |

I know. Me too. But it doesn't
work that way. I'm sorry,
Sweetheart. |

Emily looks down at her lap. |
|

(gentle)
Hey. I have someone I want you to

Ryan pulls Jojo(stuffed Animal) closer. |

This is Jojo. She was Mommy's
bear. |

Emily stares at Jojo(Stuffed Animal). |

Jojo(Human) gives Emily a tentative smile. |

I've seen you before. You sit on
Mommy and Daddy's bed. |
|

RYAN
She was Mommy's best friend. |

RYAN
Yeah. But she's yours now. |

Emily and Jojo(Human) stare at each other. After a moment,
