NOT YET
RATED

A lonely young man who owns a spooky mansion mysteriously invites a family to stay as a guest. He only has an eye on one of them, their oldest daughter Isabella. Isabella learns that Lorenzo is not some monster that everyone expects him to be, that he had no feelings for others and didn't care about other people just himself. Lorenzo eventually tells Isabella what caused his ability to hate others and to be so mean. His parents neglected him to the servants when he was a tiny baby-then they were killed by a truck when he was still very young. Lorenzo begins to feel love with Isabella for the first time. Isabella agrees to stay with him to wed for him.

                       GEORGE
*Sets the tray on the table* Don't
you care for anything else?

                       LORENZO
No. I want nothing else.

                       GEORGE
Surely, there must be something.

                       LORENZO
There is nothing. Nothing else you
can give me.

                       GEORGE
      (Boldly)
When are you going to learn to
stop drinking wine?

                       LORENZO
*Looks up* What did you say?

2.

                       GEORGE
      (Boldly)
I mean look at you. It's not
controlling your moods.

                       LORENZO
      (Anger)
*rises from his seat* Do you dare
lecture me? Do you dare lecture
your own master?

                       GEORGE

INT. HALLWAY - EVENING

                       BETSY
You did it again.

                       GEORGE
I know. It's the same. This
happens to me every time.

                       BETSY
What did you say that made him so
angry?

                       GEORGE
Told him he can't drink wine
everyday.

3.

                       BETSY
Oh. Well, God knows if the wine
would do worse for 'im. He's never
recovered the way he is.

                       GEORGE
Not since his parents died, I'm
sure.

                       BETSY
Not even when they were still
alive. It served them right, I
s'ppose. To leave a child to
suffer in darkness, bitterness and
hatred.

                       GEORGE
If he doesn't recover sooner or
later, then God have mercy on us.
On him.

*A letter comes in the mail slide of the door*

                       GEORGE
By Jove,what is that?

                       BETSY
*picks up the envelope and opens
it* A letter from the solicitor. I
must show this to 'im.

                       GEORGE
You think you can manage?

                       BETSY
Yes, I can. He never 'as his
moments when he's around me. Well,
sometimes.

                       GEORGE
      (Scoffs)
It's always on me, but not on you.
La-dee-da.

INT. VICTORIAN GOTHIC SITTING ROOM - EVENING

                       LORENZO
      (Quietly)
*Sitting on wing chair with
fingers pressed between his brows*
You can come in.

4.

                       BETSY
      (Faltering)
It's a telegram, Master Lorenzo.
I'll throw it out if you wish.

                       LORENZO
*Looks at Betsy* No. Give it to
me. I want to read it to myself
alone.

                       BETSY
What do you want me to do?

                       LORENZO
You are to go back to your work.

                       BETSY
*Curtsies* Thank you, sir.

                       LORENZO
      (Cruel)
Indeed. *reads letter, crumbles up
the paper and throws it on the
floor* GEORGE! YOU COME HERE WHEN
I CALL YOU!

                       GEORGE
*runs onstage* Yes, sir?

                       LORENZO
Open up my own house to commoners.
Would I dare?

                       GEORGE
No, sir. But suppose if they had
the money--

                       LORENZO
Money or not! I still never open
this house to anyone. Especially
commoners. People know what this
house is, even though they've
never been inside.

                       GEORGE
The ones that tell rumors?

                       LORENZO
Yes. And they know me even though
they've never seen me.

5.

                       GEORGE
What would happen if you didn't
open this house to anyone?

                       LORENZO
      (Indifferent)
Why should I care what happens?
They wouldn't dare sell it. My
father and his fathers before him
owned this very house.

                       GEORGE
You have a guest room that was
never used.

                       LORENZO
Good idea. And if more came.

                       GEORGE
A master bedroom downstairs that
belonged to your parents.

                       LORENZO
It's no longer theirs. So, why
should they have it? Let the guest
take it.

                       GEORGE
The nursery?

                       LORENZO
In case they have a child. *looks
at a list* Hmm. Larson. *writes a
letter on his desk* Here. I wrote
a letter to a family called
Larson.And their address. You
deliver it to them, and let them
keep the directions.

                       GEORGE
Of course, sir.

                       LORENZO
Don't mention my name. Make sure
they never seek anything in this
house. You can have their rooms
prepared. Buy some clothes and
toys for the children.

                       GEORGE
I think I can manage, sir.

6.

                       LORENZO
Good man.

INT. LARSON'S KITCHEN - DAY

*KITCHEN COUNTER, COFFEE MUG, TABLE AND CHAIR*

                       BRENDA LARSON
Any mail?

                       JAKE LARSON
Not yet. I'll go double check.
*goes to mailbox and opens a
letter* Huh. That's strange. The
mail appeared. It's addressed to
us.

                       BRENDA LARSON
Who's it from?

                       JAKE LARSON
It doesn't say. *sits on kitchen
counter* [Troubled] We are invited
unexpectedly to a mansion in the
hills.

                       BRENDA LARSON
      (Smiles)
*sips her coffee* There must be
some mistake. That could be a
false letter.

                       JAKE LARSON
I'm afraid there isn't. Someone
actually invited us to stay over
their mansion. But they didn't say
their name.

                       JONATHON LARSON
*runs from the back door* Are we
really going to a big house? *sits
on his father's lap*

                       JAKE LARSON
      (Soothing)
I don't know, son. This letter
could be a trap. You can't trust
things even if they seem nice.

7.

                       JONATHON LARSON
      (soothing)
This someone seems nice to invite
us.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
      (Pleasant)
They may seem nice, but they're
not.

                       JONATHON LARSON
      (Scorning)
How do you know?

                       ISABELLA LARSON
I'm older. I know things. I just
finished high school.

*Jonathon sticks his tongue out at Isabella, Isabella gives
him a look*

                       JAKE LARSON
All right, you two. We'll visit
for a few weeks.

                       BRENDA LARSON
      (Astonished)
Jake.

                       JONATHON LARSON
It's only a few weeks. We still
got some summer left. Let's get
packing.

*Larsons pack their bags and place them in the trunk of a
red Ford Escape*

                       JONATHON LARSON
I call shotgun!

                       ISABELLA LARSON
I get to ride in the front. I'm
the oldest.

                       BRENDA LARSON
You're all getting in the back
because we are all going.

8.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
Which car are we taking?

                       BRENDA LARSON
My Taurus--we need to save gas.
We're taking dad's Escape.

                       JAKE LARSON
*puts duffle bag in trunk*
Everybody in?

                       JONATHON LARSON
I wanna sit behind mom!

EXT. STREETS - MOMENTS LATER

                       JONATHON LARSON
Are we there yet?

                       BRENDA LARSON
Not yet.

                       JAKE LARSON
Did anyone use the bathroom before
we left?

                       JONATHON LARSON
I did.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
So did I. After Jonathon.

* a man with plaid shirt and overalls comes walking with a
straw hat and a hay straw in his mouth*

                       BRENDA LARSON
Who is that?

                       JAKE LARSON
It's our old friend, Dick.

                       DICK SOGERS
      (Southern Accent)
Landsakes! Where you folks goin'?
Goin' campin'? Or some fancy
hotel?

                       JAKE LARSON
Uh, no. We're going to a mansion.
We were invited there.

9.

                       DICK SOGERS
Whoa. Which one?

                       JAKE LARSON
The one on the hill.

                       DICK SOGERS
      (Wide-eyed)
The lone one? No one's been in
that big ol' joint for years.

                       JAKE LARSON
      (Puzzled)
What are you talking about?

                       DICK SOGERS
Some say a monster or a crazy guy
lives in that house. Treats them
proper workin' folks like the wolf
devours the elk. I wonder what
he'd do to you.

                       JAKE LARSON
      (Scoffs)
That's the silliest thing I've
ever heard.

                       DICK SOGERS
You haven't found it so, yet. But
you will. Good luck to you,
neighbor. God be with ya!

                       ISABELLA LARSON
*looks at the back window and
looks at front* What did he mean
by "God be with you"?

                       BRENDA LARSON
It's just a mansion. Believe me.
No monster or cruel man could own
that place. I know Dick and his
stories.

                       JAKE LARSON
Right. And if someone did, we
wouldn't be going.

EXT. MANSION FRONT COURTYARD - CONTINUOUS

*Car goes through the park gates and Jonathon stares at the
gargoyles*

10.

                       JONATHON LARSON
      (Frightened)
Why does this house have strange
things in it?

                       JAKE LARSON
Some mansions do, son.

                       JONATHON LARSON
Maybe Dick is right. No one has
been here for years.

                       JAKE LARSON
Doesn't mean it's haunted. You
hear too many ghost stories.

      (Worried)
Doesn't look like a cheerful place
to me.

                       JONATHON LARSON
Maybe some people don't know how
to decorate their homes very nice.

*Georges comes downstairs*

They once belonged to a princess

      (Hearty)
Good morning. My name is Betsy.
I'm the housemaid.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
Why do we eat here?

                       BETSY
That's because only the master is
allowed to eat in the dining hall.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
I had a strange dream. I was
walking among a field with flowers
and fireflies. Suddenly, I had
been watched. A figure was there.
Looked like a man.

                       BETSY
      (chuckling)
Oh. We dream lots of strange
things. Now, eat up. You parents
say you like scrambled eggs, yes?

                       ISABELLA LARSON
Yes. I do like my eggs scrambled.

                       BETSY
I must serve the master. He's
very...impatient.

                                         [BELL DINGS]

*George comes in with a tray and a tea set*

14.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
How come no one sees the master
except you guys?

                       GEORGE
We are at his service.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
Does he see anyone else besides
just you?

                       GEORGE
No. I'm afraid not.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
Then why did he bring us here?

                       GEORGE
He had no choice. But I daren't
say it to strangers.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
You're saying he had no choice to
bring us here even though he
didn't want us?

                       GEORGE
Yes. But you must never disturb
him.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
*Folds her arms* Oh, I won't
disturb him all right. I say he's
the most meanest man in the whole
world.

                       GEORGE
I pay heed for his commands.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
How can you listen to a guy like
that? Who is so mean and selfish?
And no one's ever seen him.

                       GEORGE
For a servant it's my duty. I
confess he is a tyrant. God knows
when he'll grow out of it. But we
will never know.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
I see. You can go now. Please.

15.

                       GEORGE
First time I heard that word in
this house *Exits*

*Isabella gets her suitcase*

                       ISABELLA LARSON
      (Sniffling)
I'm leaving this place. I don't
care if I'm far from home or if my
feet get tired.

                       JONATHON LARSON
*walks to Isabella's room* Why are
you packing up? We just got here.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
You can stay. I'm going.

                       JONATHON LARSON
Where are you going?

                       ISABELLA LARSON
      (Upset)
Home. I hate this place. I don't
care how fancy or scary it is.

                       JONATHON LARSON
But we got neat stuff here.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
      (Sighs)
You can stay and keep your neat
stuff. We came here for nothing,
you understand? Just for nothing.
This was all a set up. This wasn't
a welcoming. Nobody owns this
place. Nobody lives here.

                       JONATHON LARSON
How can people work in this place
if no one owns it? I think that
would be impossible. Could be a
monster. Like Dick said.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
You got that right. A tyrannical
monster.

16.

                       JONATHON LARSON
Even if he's gone for good, mom
and dad could run this big place.
It would look nice and not so sad
and scary.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
I highly doubt that.

*Isabella goes to the hallway carrying her suitcase, Lorenzo
watches from his upper window*

EXT. FRONT COURTYARD - DAY

*Isabella tries to get through the gates but they're too
narrow, she looks up and the bars are too high*

                                         [GATE RATTLING]

                       ISABELLA LARSON
      (Grunting)
Let me out! Someone let me out of
here! *starts to climb a wall but
falls*

                       ISABELLA LARSON
      (Frustrated)
Great! Just great! It's like I'm
in prison. I'll go talk to the
master about this. I don't care if
he doesn't want to see people.
I'll see him--tomorrow.

INT. VICTORIAN GUEST BEDROOM - MOMENTS LATER

*Jonathon sits on Isabella's bed*

                       GEORGE
Gee whiz. It didn't take you too
long. Thought you were going back
home.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
The gate's locked. The bars are
too narrow for me to get through
and the gate is too high for me to
climb. The walls are sealed.

                       JONATHON LARSON
What are you gonna do?

17.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
Speak to the master about this.

                       JONATHON LARSON
      (Wide-eyed)
Have you lost your mind?! Dick
said he could bite!

                       ISABELLA LARSON
I don't care. His bark may be
worse than his bite.

                       JONATHON LARSON
      (Courageously)
Let me come with you.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
      (Agreeable)
All right. But you got to keep
quiet. Understood?

*Jonathon nods*

INT. VICTORIAN GUEST BEDROOM - NIGHT

*Isabella is sound asleep, Jonathon comes in his pajamas
rubbing his eye*

                       JONATHON LARSON
      (Tired look)
Can we go now? He'll be busy in
the morning. Or maybe the earliest
morning.

                                         [THUNDER CLAP]

                       ISABELLA LARSON
      (Promisingly)
You heard what I said. We'll get
to him.

                       JONATHON LARSON
*walks away* Suit yourself. I'm
gonna see what's up those big
stairs.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
*Rises from her bed* Wait for me!
I'm coming too!

18.

INT. FOYER - NIGHT

*Jonathon and Isabella stand in the foyer*

                                         [THUNDER CLAP]

                                         [FOOTSTEPS]

                       JONATHON LARSON
      (Frightened)
You think he saw us? We better get
back to bed.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
      (Half-frightened)
Shh. He might be asleep. It could
have been one of the servants.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
      (Reluctant)
Are you going up?

                       JONATHON LARSON
      (Reluctant)
I'm not afraid.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
      (Reluctant)
I'm not afraid of anything.

*Isabella and Jonathon start walking up the stairs*

INT. UPSTAIRS HALLWAY - NIGHT

                       JONATHON LARSON
      (Quietly)
What if the shadows block our way?

                       ISABELLA LARSON
They won't. Remember when you got
lost in the woods? You found your
way back somehow. Everything will
be Ok.

INT. VICTORIAN GOTHIC SITTING ROOM - NIGHT

*Isabella and Jonathon look around the room*

19.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
Have you ever seen anything so
elegant? How can someone so cruel
have something so elegant?

                       JONATHON LARSON
Maybe the family was perfectly
royal. *Spots two wooden doors*
What's in here?

INT. VICTORIAN GOTHIC BEDROOM - NIGHT

*A huge four poster bed with Lorenzo tossing and turning on
it*

                       JONATHON LARSON
      (Whispering in
       fright)
Oh, no. He's waking up. What do we
do?

                       ISABELLA LARSON
      (Whispers)
Hush. He's still sleeping.

                       JONATHON LARSON
      (Quavers)
What if he's mutating?

                       ISABELLA LARSON
      (Quietly)
He's not. It's quite natural for
people to act like that in their
sleep in case they're dreaming
heavy.

                       JONATHON LARSON
We went all the way up here for
nothing? Let's go. *walks to the
door*

                       ISABELLA LARSON
I'll stay. You go.

                       JONATHON LARSON
Suit yourself. Don't come crying
to me if you get creamed. *exits*

*Isabella walks closer to the bed, without looking Lorenzo
reaches his arm out and his hand touches Isabella's left
arm, Isabella looks in fright and Lorenzo turns and opens
his eyes*

20.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
      (Frightened,
       Gasping)
Please don't hurt me.

*Lorenzo sees how scared Isabella is and controls his anger*

                       LORENZO
      (Demanding)
Who are you? What are you doing in
my room?

                       ISABELLA LARSON
      (Trembling)
I'm sorry. I couldn't sleep any
more..sir. My name is Isabella
Larson. I traveled here with my
family.

                       LORENZO
Why are you afraid?

                       ISABELLA LARSON
Well, I'm not. At least not any
more.

                       LORENZO
Oh. Not anymore, eh? What exactly
were you doing?

                       ISABELLA LARSON
Nothing.

                       LORENZO
I meant at the park gates. You can
never tell if I'm watching.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
I was mad and I was trying to run
away.

                       LORENZO
*Puts on his dressing gown*
Probably because of me.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
Well, then I sort of gave up. Then
I thought of talking to you
about--

                       LORENZO
      (Cruel)
Talk to me on such a subject? I
never talk to strangers to demand

their ways. Especially ones so
attractive.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
Please. We don't feel cheerful
here.

                       LORENZO
      (Grand talk)
It wasn't very cheerful when you
came in here when I ordered the
servants to keep you and your
family out of my sight.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
I'm sorry. I wasn't trespassing.

                       LORENZO
Don't think I'm an idiot. I heard
you and your brother here. People
can hear things when they're
sleeping, you know?

                       ISABELLA LARSON
I didn't know you'd get this
upset. I'll go if that's what you
want.

                       LORENZO
      (Demanding)
*blocks the doors* You'll stay.
Since you came in here, you will
visit me whenever I want you. I
will tell my butler George to send
for you.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
And if I refuse?

                       LORENZO
No one refuses my commands in this
house. No one. Anyone who does
will be beaten. Sleeping in the
cold dark cellars, eating gruel,
sleeping on the cold hard floor
filled with rats, have their
clothes moth eaten. Starved to
death and having their heads
filled with maggots and lice. Or
hung by a nook.

22.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
I suppose George was right about
you! You are a tyrant!

                       ISABELLA LARSON
      (Diabolical sneer)
Did he dare speak a word about me?
I'll throttle him!

                       ISABELLA LARSON
      (Pleading)
No. No. I figured it all out on my
own. Okay. You win. I'll come see
you. Not because you ordered me
to.

                       LORENZO
      (Voice over)
*Sits on his bed* How can she be
so beautiful if I'm so ugly? Most
people believe I'm a monster. Even
I believe it.

INT. VICTORIAN GUEST BEDROOM - DAY

*Isabella is pacing around, Jonathon is sitting on
Isabella's bed*

                       JONATHON LARSON
Was Dick right? Was it a monster?

                       ISABELLA LARSON
No. He was a man. Close to my age.
He's so handsome looking with that
long dark hair. But the inside of
him is like a monster.

                       JONATHON LARSON
How can people be afraid of him if
he looks like other people on the
outside?

                       ISABELLA LARSON
It's the inside of him,they're
afraid of. But I'm not afraid of
it.

*George hurriedly appears in Isabella's room*

                       GEORGE
      (Worried)
The master sent for me to fetch
you. What made you think of going

you, he might get unpleasant to

                       ISABELLA LARSON
He wanted me to stay. It looked
like he didn't mind a bit.

INT. VICTORIAN GOTHIC SITTING ROOM - DAY

*Lorenzo is sitting at his desk wearing spectacles*

                       ISABELLA LARSON
Hello? Sir?

                       LORENZO
      (Quietly)
My name is Lorenzo. You have my
permission to come closer.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
You want to see me?

                       LORENZO
Change the subject on me? It was
you who wanted to see me.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
      (Faltering)
Yes. I did.

                       LORENZO
What was it you wanted to see me
about?

                       ISABELLA LARSON
You see, I'm unhappy.

                       LORENZO
I got you everything you need.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
But still, me and my family want
to spend time together.

                       LORENZO
      (Coldly)
It's my house and you know it.

24.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
      (Snaps)
I don't care whose house this is!
Our family has the right to be
together. Maybe you don't care
because you never had one. You're
not an ugly monster at all.

                       LORENZO
      (Crafty)
If I'm not ugly, what do you think
I am?

                       ISABELLA LARSON
      (Stubborn)
You're mean and selfish! You have
no heart and no feelings! You're
ugly on the inside! Any fool can
see that! Only thing that's ugly
about you is that you're mean and
nasty, you've never been able to
feel and you're completely
diabolical!

                       LORENZO
      (Sneering
       Devilishly)
Do you dare say those things to
me? What do I need to feel? I feel
nothing, but pride. Anger. Being
high.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
      (Scoffs)
Yes, I dare! I don't care if I
did! How can anger and pride make
you feel so important?

                       LORENZO
What kind of ignorant girl are
you?!

                       ISABELLA LARSON
Someone who knows you and
understands.

                       LORENZO
      (Denying)
Nobody understands me.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
I'm afraid somebody just did.

25.

                       LORENZO
      (Anger)
No one understands me! Not even
you! Get out of here! GET OUT!
LEAVE! I DON'T WANT YOU
ANYMORE!!!!!

                       ISABELLA LARSON
      (Angry)
Fine! I won't come here anymore!
Not even when you want me!

*Isabella exits*

                       LORENZO
George!

*George appears *

                       LORENZO
      (Anger)
Did she dare say that to me in my
face?

                       GEORGE
Your Lordship--your highness-

                       DICK SOGERS
      (Snaps)
Enough! What do you know about
women?

                       GEORGE
Some are quite attractive.

                       LORENZO
The one whom I saw was. I couldn't
get her off my mind the first time
she came.

                       GEORGE
Oh.

                       LORENZO
On second thought, what do you to
a woman?

                       GEORGE
Be nice to them. Give them
something they might like. Flowers
and jewelry. Try to control your
temper. Don't let your anger
frighten her. Don't drink too

INT. COFFEE DINER - AFTERNOON

*Jonathon comes in*

                       DICK SOGERS
Whatcha doin' here, sonny? Thought
you was in that big house.

                       JONATHON LARSON
I wanted to tell you something.

                       DICK SOGERS
Sure. First, let's go in for
refreshments. *sits at booth
chairs* Now, what did you wanna
tell me?

                       JONATHON LARSON
Me and Isabella heard you say
there was a monster or a cruel man
owning that place. And we figured
you were right. We sneaked into
his chamber. I went back to bed,
but Isabella wanted to get a
closer look at him. She said she
saw him. And now he wants her to
visit him.

                       DICK SOGERS
      (Wide-eyed)
My God! She's visiting that
monster?!

                       JONATHON LARSON
I don't know what do. I'm still a
kid, I'm too scared to be near
him.

                       DICK SOGERS
Only thing those people fear is
his monster self. I reckon
Isabella don't fear it.

27.

                       JONATHON LARSON
You mean, he could be nice?

                       DICK SOGERS
That depends. Unless some wise
person made him change or make him
see the light.

                       JONATHON LARSON
Whose wise enough to do it? Not
even me. And surely not even my
parents.

                       DICK SOGERS
No. They would think it's judging
a person's instincts. I reckon
it's gotta be your sister. Or the
Lord Himself that would do it.

                       JONATHON LARSON
I got to go. Don't want mom and
dad to find out, I'm gone.

                       DICK SOGERS
Don't want your folks gettin' mad
at ya.

                       JONATHON LARSON
Thanks for the talk.

                       DICK SOGERS
*nods* Anytime.

INT. VICTORIAN GUEST BEDROOM - AFTERNOON

*Betsy comes in with a parcel and a bouquet of flowers,
Isabella is sitting on a gilt wood lavender armchair reading
"Great Expectations"*

                       ISABELLA LARSON
      (Admiringly)
Those are pretty. Who are they
for?

                       BETSY
For you, miss.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
Who brought them to me?

                       BETSY
Read it and find out.

28.

*Isabella reads the letter*

                       ISABELLA LARSON
      (Sighs)
How can such a cruel man send me
gifts?

*George appears*

                       GEORGE
The master wants you.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
Again?

                       GEORGE
Yes.

INT. VICTORIAN GOTHIC SITTING ROOM - AFTERNOON

*Lorenzo is seated on his easy chair, and Isabella is
sitting on a mahogany armchair with floral upholstery*

                       BETSY
      (Puzzled)
Why did you send me those gifts?

                       LORENZO
They were for you.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
For me? What for? You never
apologized that you shouted at me.
Or wrote down to express your
feelings about why you brought
them.

                       LORENZO
*rises from his seat* Is that the
way of it?

                       ISABELLA LARSON
Yes. When a man gives a woman a
gift, it's a way of showing how he
feels for her.

                       LORENZO
I never tell the truth to anyone.

                       LORENZO
I never dare believe in a lie.
Especially good ones.

29.

                       LORENZO
*Circles around Isabella* On my
account, we'll have dinner
together. Then I will tell you.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
You won't get angry about anything
I say?

                       LORENZO
I'll try not to.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
You won't shout?

                       LORENZO
I can be more quiet most of the
times than pretty loud.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
You won't sneer or be so
diabolical?

                       LORENZO
If that's the way of it. So be it.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
You won't be rude to the servants?
When they do what you ask, you say
"please". And when they obey, you
say "thank you."

                       LORENZO
      (Scoffs)
I've never said those ridiculous
words in my life!

                       ISABELLA LARSON
      (Scoffs)
They're not ridiculous! Only being
selfish is ridiculous! Only
thinking you can act however you
want is ridiculous! I'll go and
visit you this evening.

INT. VICTORIAN DINING AREA - EVENING

LARGE TABLE, OAK CHAIRS, WHITE LACE TABLE CLOTH, CANDELABRAS

*Lorenzo is seated on the front arm chair*

30.

                       BETSY
*Carrying the tray full of food*
This must be a good time for you,
sir.

                       GEORGE
*comes in with a tray of grape
wine* Very excellent.

                       LORENZO
*Waves his hand in a royal manner*
Please, take that away. I don't
want it anymore. It makes me have
trouble sleeping.

                       GEORGE
      (Puzzled)
Defiantly a change in you, sir.
What would you prefer?

                       LORENZO
      (Timid)
Just plain water. That would be
all. Thank you.

                       GEORGE
      (Confused)
Yes, sir. (Whispers to Betsy)-
He's never said those words in his
life.

                       BETSY
      (Whispers)
Believed himself to be a fool
saying that.

*Isabella in a purple satin gown comes in and seats herself*

                       ISABELLA LARSON
Does the wine cause you to be so
mean?

                       LORENZO
      (Timid)
In a way, yes. I felt like I
didn't want to tell you. You were
right about me. I usually do
drink. And it somehow does worse
to me. You see, my parents
died-long ago when I was a young
boy. A truck crashed them--they
said.

31.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
      (Gasping)
That must have been terrible!

                       LORENZO
Terrible for anyone else, but not
for me. They never cared about me
when they were still alive. Not
even when they gave birth to me. I
was always left to the servants.
You don't know how it feels, to
have this power. Parents throw you
out because they're too busy
thinking of themselves. And if
something happens to them, you
feel like you've never missed them
or cared one bit. Then, now you
feel guilty about it.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
I don't know what I would do,if my
mom and dad was like that. I bet I
would react the same way.

                       LORENZO
Don't. You wouldn't. You're
stronger than that, I know you
are. Me--I was not that strong.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
You felt like you needed someone
there for you.

                       LORENZO
Not really. I thought I was fine
on my own. But, perhaps you're
right. Perhaps it's making me
worse. I wanted someone who can
melt down my hate.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
      (Astonished)
You mean someone to love? You
wrote that letter that was
addressed to our house?

                       LORENZO
Yes. At first I didn't want to do
it. But, I knew it would change
something. Yes. I've never loved
anyone. When I first saw you, I
thought you would be a real dream
appearing to me. Because now,
deep inside I think you really are
            (MORE)

32.

                       LORENZO (cont'd)
beautiful and too kind with words.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
I think you're handsome. Not just
on the outside.

                       LORENZO
      (Astonished)
*Looks at Isabella* You think so?

                       ISABELLA LARSON
Yes.

                       LORENZO
No one's ever said that to me
before.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
      (chuckling)
With your kind words, I think
you're just starting.

                       LORENZO
      (chuckling)
Guess I am. Not bad for a
beginner, eh? *Lorenzo smiles the
very first time*

INT. VICTORIAN GUEST BEDROOM - EVENING

*Lorenzo helps Isabella put on her pearl necklace*

                       ISABELLA LARSON
Thanks.

                       LORENZO
*takes her hands* Shall we?

                       ISABELLA LARSON
Where are you taking me?

                       LORENZO
You'll see. It's a surprise.

INT. GRAND BALLROOM - EVENING

                       ISABELLA LARSON
Oh, my gosh. I never saw this
room.

33.

                       LORENZO
We call it a ballroom.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
You mean a dancing room? I don't
know how.

                       LORENZO
Don't worry. I'll teach you.

                                         [BLUE DANUBE]

*Lorenzo kisses Isabella, Isabella smiles, then her and
Lorenzo kiss*

EXT. GARDENS - NIGHT

*Lorenzo and Isabella walk around the garden and they sit on
the grass*

                       LORENZO
It's so peaceful here. *pauses*
(EXHALES) Isabella, how do you
feel when someone is doing this to
you because they're falling in
love with you?

                       ISABELLA LARSON
I never fell in love with anyone.
Not even when I was thirteen. But
I think it's my first time also.

                       LORENZO
      (chuckling)
Small world for both of us.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
It's late. I better get to bed.
I'll see you tomorrow, then?

                       LORENZO
*Smiles, nods* Tomorrow, it is.

*Isabella exits*

                       LORENZO
      (Voice over)
*stands outside the garden* I
never felt this way about anyone.
It must be a wonderful feeling. Do
I really love her? I seem to. Now,
I know what love is.

34.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
      (Voice over)
*walking in the hall* He has
definitely changed. I'm now seeing
good in him. I wonder if I love
him and he loves me back.

INT. VICTORIAN GUEST BEDROOM - NIGHT

*Jake and Brenda Larson, Jonathon and Dick are standing*

                       ISABELLA LARSON
What are you all doing in here?

                       JAKE LARSON
Where have you been?

                       ISABELLA LARSON
I was...exploring.

                       JAKE LARSON
In a fancy dress?

                       ISABELLA LARSON
I thought it might be a good
occasion.

                       JAKE LARSON
You look like you're dressed to
explore a wedding or a fancy prom.

                       BRENDA LARSON
Did you go in the rooms you
weren't suppose to?

                       ISABELLA LARSON
Yes, I did. *Points her hand at
Jonathon* Jonathon first came with
me.

                       JAKE LARSON
      (Firmly)
Jonathon, did you?

                       JONATHON LARSON
      (Hesitant)
Well..yes. But, Isabella was the
one that wanted to stay.

35.

                       DICK SOGERS
I told you people, weird things
happen here. You just don't
listen.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
I spent my time visiting with the
master. I dined with him this
evening. And then I danced with
him.

                       JAKE LARSON
You what?

                       DICK SOGERS
Gee missy, you dined and danced
with the monster?

                       ISABELLA LARSON
He is not a monster. He just
didn't know how to feel. Reason
why he acted the way he was
because no one at first cared
about him

                       DICK SOGERS
If only I saw there was a point to
that.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
There is. Mom, you always taught
me that people can change. That
when some are evil, they become
good in the end.

                       BRENDA LARSON
      (Smiles)
Because the Lord meant it for
good. But, honey we can't stay. We
still have our jobs. You got
school coming up and we got our
relatives and friends to see. We
can't throw that away. I know it's
a nice place to be in, but we
can't remain here long. We still
have to get on with our old lives.

                       JAKE LARSON
I agree with you, Isabella.
Really, I do. *Exits*

36.

                       DICK SOGERS
So do I. Really he was a nice guy
to give you those thingamajigs. If
only I had big dough to buy my
wife something like those*Exits*

                       JONATHON LARSON
You do look really pretty,
Isabella. *Exits*

                       ISABELLA LARSON
      (Voice over)
*sits on her bed*I can't leave
school or my friends. I can't
leave my family behind. But if I
went along with my old life,
Lorenzo might feel alone again and
might come back to his old self.
(SIGHS)

                       ISABELLA LARSON
*drops on the bed* (WEEPING)

EXT. GARDENS - NIGHT

*Lorenzo standing by the hedges*

                       LORENZO
      (Voice over)
Why am I doing this? Am I doing it
to be selfish? Is it selfish? It
doesn't seem like it.

*Betsy appears*

                       LORENZO
Yes, what is it, Betsy?

                       BETSY
Just checking to see if you was
all right.

                       LORENZO
I'm feeling light inside of me.
Like what I never felt before.

                       BETSY
I know, sir. God works in
mysterious ways.

                       LORENZO
Even with the soul?

37.

                       BETSY
Yes. I believe He does. *Exits*

                       GEORGE
Do you care for anything, sir?

                       LORENZO
No, thank you. Have you checked on
Isabella?

                       GEORGE
She's in her room. She could be
weeping.

                       LORENZO
      (Puzzled)
What about?

                       GEORGE
The thought of leaving you.
Perhaps the two of you shall talk
things over.

*Lorenzo walks in the hall*

INT. VICTORIAN GUEST BEDROOM - NIGHT

*Lorenzo comes in, but his eyes don't seem cold, they seem
tender and soothing*

                       ISABELLA LARSON
Mom? Betsy? Is that you?

                       LORENZO
      (Soothing)
No, it's me. Why are you weeping?

                       ISABELLA LARSON
      (Weeping)
I want to ask you. Do you love me?

                       LORENZO
      (Exhales)
Love you? Yes. Yes, I do.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
Then...I love you, too.

                       LORENZO
*Holds Isabella's hand and kisses
it* I can't believe what I'm
hearing.

38.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
I forgot to tell you. We'll be
leaving tomorrow.

                       LORENZO
Sounds like you don't want to go.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
Because I don't want to leave you.

                       LORENZO
Isabella, look at me. I'll be
fine. Your kind words have healed
me. It healed my heart.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
      (Trembling)
Will we always be together?

                       LORENZO
wipes the tear from Isabella's
cheek and kisses her* I will
always be there for you.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
I won't marry anyone else but you.

                       LORENZO
So, be it.

*They kiss *

INT. VICTORIAN GUEST BEDROOM - DAY

                       ISABELLA LARSON
Mom, dad. Jonathon, I have an
announcement. I'm staying here
because I'm engaged to be married.
But Lorenzo said he promises to
let you visit me whenever you
want, and I can come and see you.

                       BRENDA LARSON
That was very generous of him.

                       JAKE LARSON
Well, in case your wedding
starts...we'll be there.

                       JONATHON LARSON
Yeah, I'll be ring carrier.

39.

                       ISABELLA LARSON
      (chuckling)

                       LORENZO
*puts his hand on Isabella's
shoulder* You've been there for
me. Now, it's my turn to be here
for you.
