INT. BLACK SCREEN - DAY

                       WEST (O.S)
For millions and millions of
years, what would become man kind
lay quiet waiting for some stupid
chance to be great. Than our
ancestors discovered the deadly
power of rock and bone and
civilization as we know it, was
born.

Images of HUMAN SKELETONS and the BONES of TWO other
ANIMALS.

                       WEST (O.S)
But something darker was born
within us. Something evil.
Something foul. An urge came over
us. An urge that told us to use
these powers to cause pain, death
and suffering. And "Pain",
triggered thousands of upcoming
conflicts that would scar this
sacred earth beyond repair.

Images of smoke burning from a village, and a man killing
pregnant women. Other people are running away.

                       WEST (O.S)
The year ... is 1860. Prejudice
and hatred has divided the infant
nation of the United States of
America, into two sections.
Slave-holding, and
non-slave-holding. The
slaveholders were on the
offensive. Ready to attack at any
moment. All they needed, was
gunpowder, and a motive. And god
knows they got one.

                                         FADE TO BLACK.

                       WEST (O.S)

                       WEST

4.

                       WEST (O.S)
This battle was a bloodless one.
Killing only a confederate horse.
But the war it started will kill
six hundred and twenty thousand
Americans in a what seemed like,
endless feud of blood and gore.

A CANNON fires on FORT SUMTER and smashes into the WALLS.
Lots of rock fall to the ground.

                                         FADE TO BLACK.

INT. BLACK SCREEN - DAY

                       WEST (O.S)
And what were these horrors about?
Well ... it has been debated. Some
believe it was about freedom and
the rights of others, others
believe it was about secession.
But what this war was really
about, was survival. My name is
Richard West. I am a fisherman,
towns folk and an ordinary
citizen. This is the story of how
I lost everything. This is the
story of Bernard Frost.

Minimal opening credits role on the BLACK SCREEN...

EXT. NEW YORK HARBOR - MORNING

WEST LOOKS LIKE HE IS IN HIS LATE THIRTIES.

We see WEST walking on a road near NEW YORK HARBOR. A SHIP
PASSES by.

Their are many PROPAGANDA POSTERS on the walls of buildings.

WEST walks up to an individual building with a sign next to
it that reads: "West's Fishing Expeditions".

He unlocks the door and walks inside.

5.

                                         CUT TO:

INT. WEST'S FISHING EXPEDITIONS - CONTINUOUS

WEST puts up a sign to signal that his shop is open than
walks over to the COUNTER and sits down on a STOOL behind
it.

There is a METAL CRATE full of FISH of many kinds in it. The
FISH are visible.

ROLF, who looks as if he is in his forties enters the store.
He walks over to the COUNTER and looks down at WEST.

WEST doesn't notice him at first.

                       ROLF
That is some mighty fine fish you
have.

WEST looks up and notices him.

                       WEST
      (Surprised)
Wait what? Oh, I am very sorry sir
can you repeat your last few
words? I am sorry for the
inconvenience.

                       ROLF
      (Laughing)
I said ... that is some mighty
fine fish you got their.

                       WEST
Uh ... yes sir. Yes it is. It is
some of the finest fish in the
city sir. If I don't say so
myself.

                       ROLF
Whats your secret?

6.

                       WEST
Well ... gosh it is hard to put
into words but I guess the trick
is to be in the right place at the
right time. It gets you all the
biggest and juiciest ones.

                       ROLF
And where must I be to haul in
such a fish?

                       WEST
      (Slightly Angry)
I fail to see how that's any of
your fuckin business. If you want
to become a professional fisherman
learn the trade from someone else!
I have a goddamn family to feed!

                       ROLF
Well than if you want to keep
secrets from an old friend that is
your business.

                       WEST
What? Who the hell are you "old
friend"?

                       ROLF
Allow me to refresh your memory
and give you a few mementos. From
when we were friends.

ROLF takes out a CIVIL WAR PISTOL. WEST stares at it as if
starting to understand something.

ROLF puts the PISTOL away and takes out a CIVIL WAR CAP.

He puts away the CAP.

                       ROLF
"Him". Your old military
commander. Okay now give me a
name. The first name that comes
into your mind after witnessing
these old relics.

7.

                       WEST
      (Surprised)
Rolf? Is that you? Dear god you
have changed.

                       ROLF
      (Slightly
       Depressed)
The scars of age have finally
touched me. It has been a long
while since I have made contact
with any of my old war friends.
Because you were the closest and I
had to put you through that great
pain and agony, I thought you
deserve to be the first.

                       WEST
I know you didn't expect me to
fail, so I don't blame you. If you
still think about that.

                       ROLF
As a matter of fact I do. Yes I
do. Listen we both clearly have a
lot to discuss so lets go down to
the tavern at the end of the block
and grab a drink. For old times
sake.

                       WEST
At noon. I have a shop to run.

                       ROLF
Fair enough. I'll see you then.
Right?

                       WEST
So see you then.

                       ROLF
Good. Well I should be off.

                       WEST
Okay.

8.

ROLF leaves the shop leaving WEST sitting on the STOOL
thinking with a hard expression on his face.

                                         FADE OUT:

END OF ACT 1.

INT. TAVERN RESTAURANT - DAY

There are many in the restaurant. WAITERS carrying WINE
BOTTLES full and empty for use.

WEST and ROLF are seated at a BOOTH towards the end of the
restaurant. They are reading menus.

                       WEST
Jesus Christ this is a nice place.

                       ROLF
Have you ever been here before?

                       WEST
Only once, and that was when I was
only a child.

                       ROLF
Were you? Well how old were you?

                       WEST
About ten. Maybe older.

                       ROLF
Were you?

                       WEST
Indeed I was. So what do you think
you will have?

                       ROLF
I am thinking the Shepard's pie
seems like a promising option.
What about you?

                       WEST
I am fantasizing about the pork.

9.

                       ROLF
It does sound good.

A WAITER walks up to WEST and ROLF's BOOTH. He carries a PAD
and a WRITING UTENSIL.

                       WAITER
Are you two ready to order?

                       WEST
I think so ... Are you ready Rolf?

                       ROLF
Yes I am ready.

                       WEST
Than we are ready.

                       WAITER
Okay. What will you will be
having?

                       WEST
I will order the pork.

                       WAITER
Anything to drink sir?

                       WEST
Just water. Thank you.

The WAITER writes WEST's order on the PAD.

                       WAITER
And you sir?

                       ROLF
I will have the Shepard's pie.

                       WAITER
Anything to drink?

                       ROLF
Ale would be just fine. Thank you.

The WAITER writes ROLF's order on the PAD.

10.

                       WAITER
Will that be all?

                       WEST
Yes that will be all.

The WAITER takes WEST and ROLF's menus.

                       WAITER
Your orders will be awhile. If you
need anything just give me or any
of the other waiters a shout.

                       ROLF
Thank you very much for you
services.

                       WAITER
Your very welcome.

The WAITER walks away in the direction of the kitchen. He
places the order in a window between the bar and kitchen.

WEST and ROLF continue to talk.

                       WEST
Tell me. What brings you to New
York? Besides meeting me and other
friends?

                       ROLF
There was on other reason. I
resigned from the army a few
months prior, and wanted to
revisit old mementos.

                       WEST
      (Interested)
I wasn't aware that you decided to
stay in the military. Wouldn't
that scar you after what
progressed in the war?

11.

                       ROLF
I chose to ignore the pain. I
wanted to get to the rank of
brigadier general before I resign.

                       WEST
Did you?

                       ROLF
I did. As you can imagine, it
wasn't easy. It took a great long
time.

                       WEST
Brigadier General Rolf.

                       ROLF
Brigadier General Rolf. After I
accepted the promotion I resigned.

                       WEST
You did?

                       ROLF
Yes. It makes me think about what
happened that day, twenty years
ago. During that bloody battle.

                       WEST
It did teach me a lesson. A lesson
about human nature. What he did
and how he did it was one of the
hardest things to watch.

                       ROLF
After all these years I seldom
remember the events of prior. It
just seemed to slip my mind.

The WAITER returns and placed WEST and ROLF's DRINKS in
front of them. The WAITER than walks away.

12.

                       WEST
      (Angry)
How could you not remember? It was
one of the most scaring episodes I
can remember!

                       ROLF
      (Interupting)
I am sorry! I really am! But it
was twenty years ago and a lot has
happened since then. Expecting me
to remember every last detail is
ludicrous! Okay? If I had an
opportunity to refresh my memory I
would take it, but not a lot of
civil war vets live in the area.

WEST stares at ROLF like he is crazy. ROLF stares back at
him. Until WEST finally speaks.

                       WEST
It appears to be my turn to give
you a memento.

WEST reaches under the TABLE and pulls out a BOOK which is
made of brown leather with a strap around it.

WEST places it on the TABLE. ROLF stares down at in in
wonder.

                       ROLF
What is it?

                       WEST
It is a journal I kept during the
civil war. And I have another.

WEST reaches under the TABLE and pulls out another BOOK.
This one is made of a slightly darker leather.

WEST places it on top of his JOURNAL.

                       ROLF
Why the hell do you have two
journals? Isn't that a bit
excessive?

13.

                       WEST
It isn't my journal. This was
"his". I recommend reading them
both at the same time. It will
give you a feeling of what it was
like for "him" not us.

                       ROLF
How were you able to get a copy of
his journal? I thought he had in
berried with him.

WEST takes a sip of his WATER. He sets the GLASS down and
speaks.

                       WEST
I would have to have a foul heart
to take the original copy. I had
his journal published as anti-war
propaganda. This is a copy.

                       ROLF
When can I read them?

                       WEST
As soon as you like. Though I do
want my journal back when you are
finished. It has some personal
value to me that I think you can
understand.

ROLF picks both of the JOURNALS up and puts them in his BAG.

                       ROLF
Yes of course. I will not due
anything to it. You have my word.

                       WEST
I have your word.

The WAITER returns with their MEALS. HE places each in front
of their owner.

14.

                       WAITER
Shepard's pie ... and pork. Is
there anything else I can interest
you in?

                       WEST
No thank you.

                       ROLF
Makes me think about how useless
one single soldier is compared to
an army.

                       WEST
What do you mean?

They begin to eat their MEALS.

                       ROLF
Just answer this one question.

                       WEST
      (Confused)
Okay.

                       ROLF
How big as a regiment?

                       WEST
I fail to see the relevance...

                       ROLF
      (Interupting)
Just answer the question.

                       WEST
When in the war?

                       ROLF
How does that matter?

                       WEST
It matter a great deal. If you
mean the time of Gettysburg than a
regiment can loose hundreds of
men. But if you mean...

15.

                       ROLF
Beginning of the war.

                       WEST
One thousand men.

                       ROLF
Okay one thousand men. Now how
many are in a brigade?

                       WEST
I don't know. Three thousand to
five thousand I think. But I can't
be sure. Its been so long since I
have studied military sciences.

                       ROLF
Lets average that out and say four
thousand men.

                       WEST
Okay that sounds good to me. Now
please explain the relevance of
these questions.

                       ROLF
Alright now how many soldiers
occupy a division?

                       WEST
      (Angry)
Owe for the love of god!

                       ROLF
Answer the question please.

                       WEST
      (Angry)
Okay I don't know the answer to
the question given. It has been a
long time since...

                       ROLF
Okay fine that's good enough.
Anyway what I was getting at was
that a single soldier cannot due
much compared to the capabilities
            (MORE)

16.

                       ROLF (cont'd)
of an army.

                       WEST
I disagree with that statement.

                       ROLF
Letting me finish would be
appreciated.

                       WEST
Alright I'll shut up.

                       ROLF
Thanks. Anyway what I was getting
at was that if a soldier had to
take on a regiment, the soldier
would obviously loose. Come on
that's logic. You can't argue with
that.

                       WEST
      (Interupting)
Okay if you are thinking on that
page than yes. The regiment would
win without lifting a finger, but
what I am arguing is this: Would
spirits have been as high as they
were without "him"? Would he have
survived without us? Would a
regiment succeed without great
leadership? Of course not!

ROLF takes a bight of his FOOD.

                       ROLF
      (With a Mouthful
       of food.)
I can see your point of view.

                       WEST
And it doesn't take a scholar to
see your point of view either.
Questions like these should not be
asked, so we better not ask them.

17.

                       ROLF
Agreed.

                       WEST
Now lets eat our food. I need to
get back to the shop soon.

ROLF nods and they resume eating their FOOD.

INT. MARKETPLACE - DAY

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS EARLYER...

We see WEST sitting on a STOOL eating at a COUNTER. He is
drinking COFFEE and reading a NEWSPAPER.

We see that in the NEWSPAPER the title of an article says:
"Rebels Attack Fort Sumter!". WEST is clearly reading that
article.

There are many other PEOPLE wondering about the MARKET.

The MARKET OWNER walks over from a COUNTER a ways away. He
sits down in a STOOL next to WEST.

                       MARKET OWNER
I am going to assume you heard the
news?

                       WEST
      (Not Looking Up)
The rebels attack fort Sumter. Yes
I heard it and so has everyone
else.

WEST takes a sip of his COFFEE.

                       WEST (cont'd)
Now the federal army is going to
have to go and take it back. Not
only whats left of fort Sumter but
all of the southern states! It
takes a massive army to occupy a
region that large. Something we
            (MORE)

                       WEST (cont'd)
don't have.

                       WEST
Now to fill the gap, everyone is
enlisting in the army. I know
three people who have signed up.
All three were accepted.

                       ROLF
Really? Who were they?

                       MARKET OWNER
John, Francis, and Edward.

WEST looks up from the NEWSPAPER and turns to look at the
MARKET OWNER.

                       WEST
Why would they sign up? They
wouldn't last more that a battle!
They are too weak.

                       MARKET OWNER
Yeah that was my first reaction.
But than I found out they had
enlisted as drummer boys and it
all made sense.

                       WEST
Drummer boys? That's an odd choice
for them. They all have explosive
personalities. I know they
wouldn't survive long but still.
Given their nature they would all
sign up as soldiers.

                       MARKET OWNER
They did. They were just accepted
as drummer boys.

                       WEST
I didn't know that's how it works!

19.

                       MARKET OWNER
Me neither. Apparently they give
you some sort of physical and
mental examination than give you
the rank of drummer boy, soldier,
or officer.

                       WEST
That's interesting. With that kind
of information I might just enlist
just to see if I am a soldier,
officer or drummer boy.

                       MARKET OWNER
I damn hope you realize that if
you enlist you "will" be sent to
the front line.

                       WEST
Yes I do realize that.

                       MARKET OWNER
What are you saying? Are you
actually going to join the army?

                       WEST
The last time I checked standard
military procedures, enlisting
means signing up. Does that answer
your question?

                       MARKET OWNER
      (Surprised and
       Scared)
Half of it. Why are you enlisting?
You have a very good chance of
getting hurt or worse.

                       WEST
I am completely aware of the
risks. I want to be in the army
because I feel that all my life I
have done nothing useful to
society. I feel that I have wasted
twenty years just doing whatever
the hell I want to do. I don't
like that feeling and now I want
            (MORE)

20.

                       WEST (cont'd)
to do something that I want to be
remembered for so I don't die a
ghost like many people have in the
past. I hope that is a good enough
because I can't think of another
good and valid reason.

                       MARKET OWNER
Well your crazy, but you gave a
good reason for it. But your still
crazy.

WEST and the MARKET OWNER laugh.

                       WEST
I have actually never fired a
rifle before. Now is my chance I
guess.

                       MARKET OWNER
I thought you went hunting about a
year back.

                       WEST
But I didn't have any success even
finding an animal. I told you
that. Didn't I?

                       MARKET OWNER
I don't believe you did.

                       WEST
Well now I did. Anyway I am going
to go to the enlistment office.
This may be the last time I ever
come to your bar old friend.

WEST and the MARKET OWNER stand up.

                       MARKET OWNER
You take care of your ass West.
And don't get killed.

WEST and the MARKET OWNER hug. WEST then leaves.

narrow GRAVEL PATH.

                       FROST'S MOTHER (O.S)
For the last time, I will not

INT. FROST MANOR - DAY

We see FROST and FROST'S MOTHER sitting on FANCY TABLES in
what looks like FROST's room. FROST looks no older than
TWELVE.

FROST'S MOTHER is clearly crying.

                       FROST
I am sorry mom. I have already
made up my mind. You had your
chance and you blew it. Consider
this revenge.

FROST'S MOTHER drops to her hands and knees and places her
hands on FROST's shoulders. One each. She looks at the
floor. There is a long pause.

She looks up when she speaks.

                       FROST'S MOTHER
Is there anything I can do to talk
you out of this Bernard? Is there
anything.

                       FROST
For the very last fucking time.
No. There is nothing you can do. I
made up my mind a long time ago.
There is nothing you can do.
Accept it. Or die trying.

22.

                       FROST'S MOTHER
Bernard I am you mother. I can't
just accept that my own son is
going to be in the army without my
consent. It's unholy! I can't just
...

                       FROST
      (Interupting)
To hell with that! You had your
chance to be a good parent and you
threw it away. You just could not
accept that not everyone is
perfect. You just can not accept
that! Well you know what? Let this
be an omen. Let this be a signal
from god, that you aren't perfect
either.

                       FROST'S MOTHER
Bernard I'm sorry but ...

                       FROST
My brothers and sisters aren't
sorry. You can't just feel for
them. I think I have been in the
world long enough to understand
that. And you ...
      (Laughs)
you have been in this world far
longer than I have. I think you
should understand than too.

                       FROST'S MOTHER
Bernard ...

                       FROST
      (Extremely Angry)
Shut up! I am enlisting and that's
finale. Stand in my way I dare
you!
      (Sighs)
Look. Mother I am sorry. I will
return. I will return a different
person. Someone you have never
seen before. Goodbye.

23.

FROST leaves the room and FROST'S MOTHER wails in agony. We
see FROST stopping in the hallway and look down at the
floor. A tear comes out of his eye.

                                         DISSOLVE TO:

END OF ACT 2.

INT. TRAIN - EVENING

We see WEST sitting on a BENCH wearing a UNION UNIFORM and
carrying a MUSKET with the STRAP around his back.

The BENCH is in front of a TABLE where there are many other
BENCHES with PEOPLE sitting in them. Their are two other
PEOPLE.

They are all playing poker. U SOLDIER 1 deals two CARDS to
each of them.

They are all playing under CANDLE light. There is a LANTERN
at the center of the TABLE.

WEST raises and eyebrow at his CARDS.

                       U SOLDIER 1
Anyone bet?

                       WEST
Yes. I raise you ten dollars.

WEST places a 1860s TEN DOLLAR BILL in the center of the
TABLE next to the LANTERN.

                       U SOLDIER 2
I see your ten and raise you five
more.

U SOLDIER 2 places a 1860s FIVE DOLLAR BILL on top of WEST's
TEN DOLLAR BILL. The others do the same.

                       U SOLDIER 1
I see your five and raise two
more.

24.

U SOLDIER 1 places a 1860s ONE DOLLAR BILL on top of the
FIVE and the TEN. The others do the same.

They sit for a while starring at their CARDS.

                       U SOLDIER 1
Any more bets? Or will that be it?

                       WEST
I think we can move on?

                       U SOLDIER 2
Yes we can.

                       U SOLDIER 1
Okay.

U SOLDIER 1 places THREE CARDS face up on the TABLE. WEST
and U SOLDIER 2 admire the CARDS.

                       WEST
It appears to be my lucky day. I
raise you all fifteen.

WEST places FIFTEEN DOLLARS on the TABLE. The FIFTEEN
DOLLARS includes one TEN DOLLAR BILL and one FIVE DOLLAR
BILL.

The others do the same.

                       U SOLDIER 1
Alright because you appear to be
getting ambitious I am not going
to bet anything.

                       WEST
      (To U SOLDIER 2)
Fair enough. Are you going to bet
anything Private?

                       U SOLDIER 2
I stay.

                       WEST
Alright then deal out the finale
card.

25.

                       U SOLDIER 1
Alright.

U SOLDIER 1 places the finale CARD face up beside the
others.

WEST looks happy. He smiles at the CARD.

                       WEST
I raise you all ten.

WEST places a TEN DOLLAR BILL on the table. The others do
the same.

                       U SOLDIER 2
      (Looking Angry)
God dammit I fold!

                       WEST
Alright the first person has
folded.

There is a pause. U SOLDIER 1 and WEST both stare at their
CARDS which they hold in their hands.

                       WEST
Are their any other bets?

                       U SOLDIER 1
Yes I raise you five.

                       WEST
Alright.

U SOLDIER 1 and WEST both place FIVE DOLLAR BILLS on the
money pile.

                       WEST
I see your five and raise you ...
five more.

WEST places another FIVE DOLLAR BILL on the money pile.

                       U SOLDIER 1
I see your five.

26.

U SOLDIER 1 places a FIVE DOLLAR BILL on the money pile.

                       U SOLDIER 1
And that will be all.

                       WEST
Alright. Reveal your cards.

WEST and U SOLDIER 1 reveal their cards. U SOLDIER 1 has a
two pair, and WEST has a full house.

WEST grins.

                       U SOLDIER 1
Son of a bitch. Son of a bitch!

WEST drags the money off the TABLE and in to his REVISIONS
PACK. He reaches out to shake hands with U SOLDIER 1.

                       WEST
Good game.

U SOLDIER 1 takes his hand and shakes it.

                       U SOLDIER 1
      (Slightly Upset)
Good game.

WEST releases U SOLDIER 1's hand. He than drags his BENCH
over to a WINDOW. HE than sits down in it and looks out the
WINDOW.

He sees the hills and clouds slowly go by.

                                         FADE OUT:

EXT. TRAIN - MORNING

We see the TRAIN slowly pass over a bridge. There is plenty
of smoke coming out of the SMOKE TOWER.

27.

INT. TRAIN - MORNING

We see WEST's eye slowly opening. We can still hear the
sounds of the train on the bridge. It slowly passes.

WEST slowly sits up and yawns. He looks around the train
car. Some SOLDIERS are already awake. Most are still asleep.

He notices a FROST sitting on a BENCH with his head down.

                       WEST
      (To FROST)
Hey kid!

FROST lifts his head up and looks at WEST.

                       WEST
Come here.

FROST stands up and walks over to WEST.

                       WEST
Here sit in this.

WEST pulls over a CHAIR that rests next to WEST's bench. He
moves into a position that faces WEST. WEST sits back down.
FROST sits down in the CHAIR.

                       WEST
Whats your name kid?

                       FROST
Bernard Frost sir.

                       WEST
Well "Bernard Frost" aren't you a
little young to be serving in the
army?

                       FROST
No sir. There is no legal age that
a person must be in order to sign
up for the army. I am going to be
a drummer boy anyway so it does
not matter.

28.

                       WEST
      (Interested)
Your pretty smart for a boy your
age. My name is Richard West.

                       FROST
An honor to meet you mister West.

                       WEST
Please just call me West. That's
what all my friends used to call
me.

                       FROST
But sir I was taught to always
address a stranger by "mister"
than his last name.

WEST stares at FROST like he is crazy.

                       WEST
To hell with that. This is the
military not a formal party.

                       FROST
I guess your right "West".

                       WEST
Good. Good. Your learning.

ROLF who looks much younger than he did before enters the
train car and looks around.

He notices WEST and walks over to him and sits down next to
him.

                       WEST
And who might you be?

                       ROLF
My name is John Rolf. I am going
to be the commander of this
regiment.

29.

                       WEST
A pleasure to meet you sir.
      (Pointing to FROST)
This is Bernard Frost he is going
to be my platoon's drummer boy.
      (To FROST)
Right?

                       FROST
That is correct. It is a pleasure
to meet you sir.

FROST and ROLF shake hands.

                       ROLF
An honor to meet you. Listen I am
looking fro people I can trust. I
can't be expected to make every
call at every turn. That is too
much for one man to be able to do.
So if any of you have any
suggestions that might help us, I
want to hear them. Understand?

                       WEST
Yes sir I do.

                       ROLF
Good.
      (Standing Up)
Now if you excuse me, I have to go
talk to the other platoon leaders.

                       WEST
You are excused.

                       ROLF
Thank you.

ROLF walks away. He opens the door to the next car and
leaves.

                                         FADE OUT:

30.

INT. FROST'S DREAM OF WAR - DAY

We see FROST dressed for battle playing his drum. WEST's
PLATOON is marching forward towards CONFEDERATE lines that
are revealed.

The sounds of CANNON FIRE can be heard clearly.

CUT TO: A CONFEDERATE CANNON

                       C CANON OFFICER
Fire!

The CANNON fires.

CUT TO: The CANNON BALL smashing into UNION lines. Many
soldiers die or fall wounded.

CUT TO: FROST and the platoon still marching forward.

                       ROLF (V.O)
Halt march!

The SOLDIERS halt. FROST stops playing the DRUM. He looks
very terrified.

                       WEST
Prepare to fire!

The UNION SOLDIER aim at the CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS. The
CONFEDERATES also aim.

                       C OFFICER 1
Fire!

All sounds stop as the CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS fire. Only the
sound of FROST's heart beating can be heard.

Many UNION SOLDIERS die or fall wounded. A CONFEDERATE
CANNON fires and the explosion occurs not far from FROST. It
sends him to the ground. He covers his ears. He is clearly
scared.

CUT TO: WEST aiming his MUSKET.

31.

                       WEST
      (Faintly Heard)
Fire!

The UNION SOLDIERS fire on the CONFEDERATES. Many die or
fall wounded. One CONFEDERATE SOLDIER is hit so many times
that his body falls apart. Blood and gore spray everywhere.

CUT TO: WEST

                       WEST
Charge!

WEST's PLATOON charges at the CONFEDERATES. FROST remains on
the ground covering his ears. All sound resumes as the
platoon smashes into the CONFEDERATE lines causing serious
damage.

The CONFEDERATES charge back into the UNION lines. FROST
slowly sits up and watches the battle.

CONFEDERATE and UNION SOLDIERS kill each other. Many bodies
litter the floor staining the GRASS red. ARTILLERY explodes
everywhere.

The CONFEDERATES begin to drive the UNION SOLDIERS back to
where FROST is sitting. He stands up and retreats. A
explosion stops him. He turns around to see a CONFEDERATE

already awake. WEST, ROLF and TWO OTHER SOLDIERS are playing

cards.

FROST is awake. He sits up.

                       WEST
Well look who finally woke up. You
missed breakfast and the next meal
will not be until noon. So be
prepared to be hungry.

                       FROST
      (Sleepy)
Yes. I have full knowledge of
that. So there is no need to
lecture me.

                       WEST
So you were awake the whole time
huh?

                       FROST
Yes. I had a nightmare.

                       WEST
Did you? Well a good game of cards
will get the thought out of your
head. Come over here and play with
us. You can join next round.

                       FROST
Thank you.

FROST walks over to the TABLE and sits down in an empty
CHAIR besides ROLF.

They continue to play poker. The Sounds of battle can be
heard. FROST puts his head in his hand. He is clearly
scared.

taking aim.

                       WEST
Steady ... steady now ... fire!

The SOLDIER fires and misses a EMPTY WISKEY BOTTLE that
rests on a log near a TREE.

                       WEST
Alright that is okay you will do
better next time. Next!

The SOLDIER walks to the back of the long line and begins to
reload. FROST steps up and aims PISTOL.

                       WEST
Alright, make sure the tip of your
pistol is facing the bottle, don't
let it move. You may fire when
ready.

FROST waits a for a while. Still aiming.

                       FROST'S BROTHER 1 (O.S)
You are not worthy to be a Frost
you are to short and weak!

                       FROST'S BROTHER 2 (O.S)
Look! He can actually lift a piece
of paper! Thats an accomplishment.

We see FROST expression become more and more extreme. He
becomes more and more angry.

                       U SOLDIER 1
You are too weak to do anything a
real Frost can do you little ...

34.

FROST yells and fires the PISTOL. All sounds of FROST'S
BROTHERs stop as the WISKEY BOTTLE shatters into many
thousands of pieces.

The PLATOON is completely silent. They do not say a word as
FROST walks to the back of the line.

                       WEST
      (Still Shocked)
Alright who is next?

Another SOLDIER steps up and WEST replaces the shattered
WISKEY BOTTLE with a new one.

WILLIAM is in line just in front of FROST.

                       WILLIAM
Good shot.

                       FROST
Thanks ...

                       WILLIAM
William. My name is William. I am
a friend of West.

                       FROST
You are? When did you meet him?

                       WILLIAM
Just after we arrived here in DC.
We ran into each other in the
kitchens.

                       FROST
Hmm. I think he is a good leader.

                       WILLIAM
Indeed he is.

                       WEST
      (Commanding the
       SOLDIER)
Fire now!

The SOLDIER fires.

35.

                       WILLIAM
Good luck to you.

                       FROST
Good luck in what?

                       WILLIAM
Our first battle. It is going to
be held a few days from now.

                       FROST
      (Slightly
       Surprised)
Really? I wasn't aware of that.
Well good luck to you too then.

                       WILLIAM
Thank you. See you around.

                       WEST
      (To the PLATOON)
Alright everyone is on lunch break
until further notice. If there are
any questions ask them now.

The crowd is silent.

                       WEST
Alright then. You are all
dismissed. Report back here in an
hour.

The PLATOON walks towards the KITCHENS. WEST runs up to
FROST. He slows to a walking speed once he arrives.

                       WEST
That was some good shooting.

                       FROST
Thank you sir.

                       WEST
You may actually make a good
soldier. That aim of yours will do
us no good if you are just a
drummer boy.

36.

                       FROST
Thank you sir for the offer but I
would feel a lot safer if I
remained a moral figure.

                       WEST
Suit yourself. Though me offer
stands. You will always carry a
pistol into battle if you get
separated from the platoon.

                       FROST
I was unaware that was a
regulation.

                       WEST
It isn't. But I am saying for your
own safety. Keep that pistol. Just
in case.

                       FROST
Thank you sir.

large POT that is manned by a CHEF. In the POT is TOMATO
SOUP. The CHEF serves a two SOLDIERS before WEST arrives at
the POT. The CHEF pores TOMATO SOUP into WEST's BOWL.

                       WEST
Thank you.

WEST walks off. FROST is served as he leaves. WEST walks
over to his TENT which is a ways away from the KITCHEN.

When WEST arrives at his TENT he sits down in a small ARM
CHAIR that is under the TENT's shelter, and begins to eat.

He takes one bight using a spoon and makes a face indicating
that it is bad. He takes another one.

WILLIAMS walks over to where WEST is sitting and sits DOWN

37.

on the COT near him. He also carries a BOWL with TOMATO
SOUP.

                       WILLIAM
Bad huh?

                       WEST
Its terrible! How are we supposed
to eat this horse shit?

                       WILLIAM
Yes I know it's terrible too.
There is a rumor going around that
some soldier in the Jersey 5th
found a bug in his bowl.

                       WEST
Somehow that doesn't surprise me.
I can't believe that Soldiers
world wide have to live on this.
It's terrible!

                       WILLIAM
They don't.

                       WEST
      (Confused)
They don't? But I thought ...

                       WILLIAM
      (Interupting)
The only reason we do, is because
this army is so large. More and
more soldiers arrive every day.
Every day there are more mouths to
feed.

                       WEST
I guess your right. I guess I
can't expect a gourmet restaurant
as a military kitchen.

38.

                       WILLIAM
I fail to understand why anyone
would come to expect such a thing.
Military food has been and always
will be junk.

                       WEST
I thought you said that a smaller
army would get better meals.

                       WILLIAM
Yes I did say that. What I am
saying is even with a small army,
the food is still junk even if its
a little better.

                       WEST
Owe I see.

WILLIAM and WEST eat their food in silence for a while.

drills. I will see you at the

minutes.

                       WEST
Alright. I will meet you there.

We see WEST standing in the middle of a battlefield. He has
a cut on his arm and leg. His MUSKET is coated with dust.

There is SMOKE coming from a TOWN on the horizon. WEST
watched in horror as the TOWN burns to the ground.

A CONFEDERATE SOLDIER is dragged by UNION SOLDIERS than

39.

stabbed through the heart. A UNION SOLDIER is shot by a
CONFEDERATE SOLDIER standing several yards away from him.

WEST is approached by a CONFEDERATE SOLDIER who violently
attempts to stab WEST. He dodges and stabs him through the
stomach. The CONFEDERATE SOLDIER falls to the ground
clutching his stomach in pain. He yells in pain.

WEST walks over to a UNION SOLDIER's dead body which lays on
the ground. The fighting is still happening as he walks. An
explosion occurs several hundred yards away from WEST.

WEST reaches the dead body. He kneels and looks at it. It is
the body of FROST. His drum set lay beside him and his
PISTOL is still in his hand. The DRUM is shot through many
times.

                       WEST
Owe my god! Frost! Frost!

WEST shakes him. He doesn't wake up. WEST picks up the
PISTOL and stares at it. WEST aims it at a CONFEDERATE
SOLDIER who is retreating. He fires and the BULLET hits the
SOLDIER in the neck. BLOOD sprays everywhere.

He than hits A CONFEDERATE SOLDIER charging towards him with
the PISTOL. He than plunges his MUSKET's BAYONET into the
CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS stomach.

He than kneels back down next to FROST.

A CONFEDERATE SOLDIER who is FROST'S BROTHER 1 steps up to

INT. FROST'S TENT - EVENING

FROST is sitting on his TENT's COT. He holds a BOWL of SOUP.
He slowly consumes it with a SPOON.

There are many MAPS and other ITEMS related to COMBAT use.
Outside the TENT there are many HEARTHS with SOLDIERS
gathered around them. There are many STARS in the sky which
FROST are looking at. He stares up at the STARS while eating
his SOUP.

WEST has taken a seat right beside FROST and looks up at the
stars with them.

                       WEST
They are really incredible aren't
they?

                       FROST
It really is. I have never seen a
view quite like this in my entire
life. Makes me wonder what else I
have been missing.

                       WEST
You do not stand alone with that
thought. I have been in the
countryside before and I have
always wanted to live there but I
have not the money to be able to
withstand the change.

                       FROST
      (Confused)
What?

                       WEST
Sorry. I do not have the verbal
sophistication that you do. What I
meant was: I do not have the money
to afford a move from New York to
Virginia.

                       FROST
Did anyone say that all these
stars are only found in Virginia?

42.

                       WEST
Well no but ...

                       FROST
You can find this many stars
practically anywhere. Anywhere but
the city. You can only see a
fraction of them from the city.

                       WEST
Yeah I always knew that.

FROST looks down from the STARS, and looks at WEST.

                       FROST
I am sorry sir. If I offended you
my apologies are deep.

                       WEST
No you didn't offend me. Sometimes
I purposefully question my own
knowledge.

                       FROST
      (Confused)
May I ask why sir?

                       WEST
Yes you may.

                       FROST
Okay ... why?

                       WEST
Because ... I don't know. Just for
the hell of it I guess. I can
never fully explain the things
that I do sometimes.
      (Laughing)
Maybe it's just my own instincts.
I don't know.

43.

                       FROST
Instincts sound like a good enough
answer for me. I sometimes do
things just for the hell of it
also.

                       WEST
I feel like you are hinting
something at me.

                       FROST
If I was hinting at you believe,
me. You would be sure of it.

                       WEST
Bernard, why did you enlist?

                       FROST
What brings that question out of
your head?

                       WEST
Well that's what I thought you
were hinting at me to ask.

                       FROST
Well ... I suppose it began a long
time ago.

                       WEST
How long ago?

                       ROLF
When I was born.

                       WEST
Okay, now I am really interested.
How did it begin at your birth?
That was what twelve years before
the war started? Am I right.

                       FROST
Thirteen years but yes.

                       WEST
Close enough.

44.

                       FROST
Anyway what I was getting at was
that my family is very rich and
very proud. All members of the
Frost family tree were very, very
big. You know the really tall and
very strong folk.

                       WEST
Yes I no what your talking about.

                       FROST
All members of my family were like
this. All but me. When I was born,
I was ... well you might call me:
"more average sized." And I
received so much crap for it. My
brothers and sisters called me a
"disgrace to the family". And my
parents just stood back and
watched. This went on for many
long years until the rebels
attacked fort Sumter. I took this
opportunity to prove to my
brothers and sisters that I wasn't
completely useless. So I enlisted.
My parents said they would not
allow it. But I violently pushed
them aside, leaving what was left
of them to rot in the ever so
large mansion of ours. Waiting for
my return.
      (A tear runs down
       his cheek)
I do not know If I should ever see
them again.

The sun has now completely set on the horizon.

                       WEST
Wow. They must have pushed you
hard to go through this much
trouble.

45.

                       FROST
Yes they did. Life for me, was a
small and helpless fish trying to
survive countless sharks. All of
them out to get me.

WEST and FROST both watch the colors of the sunset on the
horizon. FROST is clearly upset and WEST is emphatically
upset also.

                       WEST
You should get some rest.
Tomorrow, we engage.

WEST leaves the TENT leaving FROST starring at the horizon.

Overall the ARTILLERY did not do much damage to the charging
