1959

A YOUNG TEENAGE COUPLE, running through a small field of
SUNFLOWERS.

                       EDWARD JR. (vo)
Nobody ever believed me. I had
been saying it for years.

They begin to play a flirty version of "HIDE AND SEEK"

                       EDWARD JR. (vo)
The whispers. Oh the whispers. I
was paranoid. I had a weird
fetish. That I had...

The boy is squatting behind a sunflower. The girl walking
around notices something out of the corner of her eye and
STOPS.

                       EDWARD JR. (vo)
Anthrophobia…(Pause) But I
didn't, I don't have a fear of
flowers. That's ridiculous. Just
this one. Because they aren't
flowers. They aren't even of our
world.

Zoom in on girls face. Her eyes are wide open. She looks
HORRIFIED. Something quickly grabs her by the waist,
throwing her to the ground. She SCREAMS, but it is quickly
muffled. There is an eerie LOCUST type of sound.

The boy calmly stands up, hands in pocket and walks out of
the field without looking back.

                       EDWARD JR. (vo)
Sunflowers.

The boy walks up the steps of a LARGE FARMHOUSE. He opens
the screen door, shutting it behind him.

                       EDWARD JR. (vo)
I know what you're thinking. That
I'm a pussy. That I'm mental.
But, you haven't seen what I have.
And if you knew, well…You would
think twice about ever setting
foot near them. And, don't get me

Yeah, I think the Ativan works for
me. Levels me out. Haven't had
an anxiety attack in three weeks.

                       EDWARD JR.
      (nervous laughter)
Sounds completely ridiculous when
you say it.

                       DR. VASQUEZ
When someone has a genuine fear of
something, that fear is very real.
It is never ridiculous. It
took something very traumatic to
get you here, and it will take
time to peel those layers back to
finally release you of that fear.

                       EDWARD JR.
Well, I think we're going in the
right direction. Meds definitely
help. My little present this
morning didn't phase me at all.

                       DR. VASQUEZ
I thought it was only the large
ones you didn't like?

                       EDWARD JR.
The small ones could throw me into

How about on the dating front. The
last time we spoke, there was

      (interrupting)
No…I mean, I like her, but. I

whole town does, doc.

                       DR. VASQUEZ
Not the whole town.

                       EDWARD JR.
That's your job.

                       DR. VASQUEZ

                       PSYCHE DOCTOR
I firmly believe that he is having
a hallucinogenic episode due to
lack of sleep, Missus Jameson.
However, I don't want to rule out
schizophrenia or mania. It'll be
best if he stays here for a couple
of days.

                       MILLICENT
Okay. There isn't a history of
mental illness on my side of the
family. My husband's though. His
father was bipolar.

                       EDWARD JR.

He has aged significantly in the past thirty years. His
hair and mustache are peppered with grey and white, gravity
is tugging at his jowls, lines traverse across his forehead.

                       CONNOR (oc)
Toby!

Edward cranes his neck around the corner of the house and

                       EDWARD SR.
Sure is. Good eaters, they are.

                       EDWARD SR.
      (smiling)
A special kind of fertilizer.

                       CONNOR
Can I go in there and look for
him?

                       EDWARD SR.
That wouldn't be a good idea right
now.

                       CONNOR
Why not?

                       EDWARD SR.
I just fed them. Ground is a
little bit…delicate right now. I
think Toby would have come out by

                       CONNOR
Yeah I guess so. Maybe he's back
at home.

                       EDWARD SR.
All right then. Well, you better
run along now and look for him. I

Okay Mister Jameson, see ya!

                       EDWARD SR.
And I'll keep an eye out for Toby.

                       CONNOR
Okay!

Eddie SQUINTS while watching the young boy leave. He
redirects his attention once again to the flowers and starts
walking over there.

EXT. SUNFLOWER FIELD - MOMENTS LATER

From the vantage point of Eddie's steel-toed boots, there is
the remainder of the dog's carcass. Eddie lovingly strokes
the BLOOD TINGED petals of the flowers.

                       EDWARD SR.
Finish up loves. There will be
more, I promise you that.

He turns to walk out of the field, as the flowers twist and
bend down to finish off the dog. They are emitting a
SCREECHING, GURGLING SOUND.

INT. GROCERY STORE - AFTERNOON

Eddie Jr. is the manager of the local market in town. He is
walking down the aisles checking off items on his inventory
list. An employee walks up to ask him a question.

                       CARL
Mister Jameson, there's a spill
over by the flowers. I can't find
the mop.

14.

                       EDWARD JR.
You check the storage closet?

                       CARL
Yessir, it's not there.

                       EDWARD JR.
Alright then. Try the back near
the fridge. Some ice had been
left out and melted this morning,
might have been used to clean in
up.

                       CARL
Okay.

The kid walks toward the back, as Eddie continues to
checking off items. Coming upon the flowers, his eyes catch
a bucket of fresh cut sunflowers in their white bucket. He
inhales sharply, then reaches into his pocket, trying not to
panic. He pops a pill into his mouth, closing his eyes.

While trying to calm himself down, the employee
unintentionally sneaks up behind Eddie Jr., startling him.

                       CARL
Found it.

EDDIE JUMPS

                       CARL
So sorry…I know how you
don't…(pause) I'll get that
cleaned up.

                       EDWARD JR.
Thank you.

THE KID STARTS MOPPING UP.

                       CARL
You mind if I ask you a personal
question sir?

                       EDWARD JR.
Depends.

                       CARL
Well…I know you don't like those
things, and trust me, I don't
judge you. We all have our things
that scare us. For instance, I
don't like spiders.

15.

                       EDWARD JR.
Most people don't.

                       CARL
So, why sell them here? It's your
store, you can choose not to.

                       EDWARD JR.
Other people enjoy them. And they
say, the best way to get over a
fear is to face it head on.
Besides, their season is short. I
can handle it.

                       CARL
That what they say?

                       EDWARD JR.
So I've heard.

                       CARL
Was it hard, growing up on that
farm? I can see why, being
surrounded like that. Not liking
them. You know, I used to have
this cousin that lived near the
oil wells? You know those things
that drill? She thought they were
giant grasshoppers coming to get
here. Still scares her to this
day when she sees them...

                       EDWARD JR.
      (interrupts)
I need to finish checking on the
inventory.

                       CARL
Of course. Sorry.

Eddie Jr. turns to walk toward one of the aisles, when he
sees the young boy - the one that was at his father's house
- putting up a flier for his missing dog. Eddie Jr. gulps
then presses his lips together. the bulletin board is
littered with other posters of various missing pets as well.

INT. TAVERN - NIGHT

Eddie Jr. is sitting at the bar, nursing a beer and a
whiskey, with his face in his hands. The bar is SMALL,

16.

SMOKY, and not very crowded. It's your typical SMALL TOWN
TAVERN. There's a small TV behind the bar, the news is
on.

A young, thin girl behind the bar, named BILLY comes over
with a pitcher of beer.

                       BILLY
Like a refill, junior?

                       EDWARD JR.
No, thanks though Billy.

                       BILLY
      (winks)
You bet. Let me know.

He notices they are talking of yet again another missing
person. Eddie shakes his head and sighs.

                       BAR PATRON #1
Damn shame, there's another one
that'll prolly never be found.
Purty too.

                       BILLY
      (turns it up)
Always around this time of year.

                       BAR PATRON #2
You know, could be those darn.
Sunflowers. (laughs) I hear they
can be deadly.

Eddie Jr. shifts UNCOMFORTABLY in his seat. He's used to
being picked on, but has ignored it…until now.

                       BILLY
      (whispers)
Ignore 'em. Been here for hours.

                       BAR PATRON #1
Hey boy. Aren't you the crazy one
that went around telling the whole
town ten years ago your daddy's
flowers were eating people up?

CRACKS HIS NECK.

                       EDWARD JR.
Yup. I'm the crazy one.

17.

                       BAR PATRON #1
You really believe that shit? I
hear you're seeing a shrink. (to
his friend) You know that? He's
been to a shrink because he is off
his rails.

                       BAR PATRON #2
      (standing up)
I think someone should be sending
the police to your house. Maybe
something interesting will be
found under your floorboards.

#1 STANDS UP, WALKS OVER AND POKES EDDIE'S SHOULDER

                       EDWARD JR.
Do not touch me again.

                       BAR PATRON #1
Or what? You gonna attack me with
that carnation over there?

                       BAR PATRON #2
It ain't carnations, it's them
sunflowers.

HE POKES HIM AGAIN

                       BILLY
That's enough. I'm cutting you
off, Al.

Friend number two walks over, a cut carnation from one of
the tables between his fingers. He HURLS it at Eddie.

                       BAR PATRON #2
That scare you kid? Who-whe!
Watch out, the carnation is gonna
take a bite outta ya!

                       EDWARD JR.
      (mutters)
Stop.

                       BILLY
Stop harassing my customer...

                       BAR PATRON #1
Whole new meaning to pushing up
daisies

18.

                       EDWARD JR.
You want to be pushing up daisies?

                       BAR PATRON #1
You threatening me boy?

Eddie Jr. THROWS the barstool from behind him, as his right
hand lands squarely on Patron #2's chin. #1 shoves and
punches Eddie right back, and soon all three are full on
BRAWLING.

EDDIE SR. WALKS INTO THE BAR AT THAT MOMENT

                       EDWARD SR.
      (yells)
Hey! Break it up.

EDDIE SR. PUSHES HIS SON OUT OF THE WAY

                       EDWARD SR.
What in the Sam Hill is going on
here?

                       BAR PATRON #1
Nothing Eddie...

                       BAR PATRON #2
Just having a word with your boy
here is all.

                       EDWARD SR.
Looked more then just words. (To
junior) You want to explain to me
son what happened here?

EDDIE JR. WIPES THE BLOOD FROM HIS MOUTH

                       EDWARD JR.
I'm not a kid. I don't have to
explain shit to you.

EDDIE SR. SLAPS HIM ACROSS THE CHEEK.

                       EDWARD JR.
Ow! Jesus Christ pa! That was
unnecessary.

                       EDWARD SR.
You may be thirty two years old,
but I'm still your father. You
don't mouth off at me. EVER!

19.

EDDIE JR. NOW RUBS HIS JAW

                       EDWARD JR.
Thanks for the drink Billy.

EDDIE JR. PICKS UP THE BARSTOOL AND PLACES IT AT THE BAR

                       EDWARD SR.
Where you going?

                       EDWARD JR.
Home.

                       EDWARD SR.
I haven't seen you in over a year.
Stay and have a drink with your
old man.

                       EDWARD JR.
You know where I live and work.
You know how to find me.

                       EDWARD SR.
One drink.

                       EDWARD JR.
No thanks.

                       EDWARD SR.
      (softer)
Come on son. We haven't talked
since...

                       EDWARD JR.
No. I'm tired. See you later
Billy.

EDDIE JR. HEADS OUT THE DOOR

CLOSE UP ON EDWARD SENIORS FACE. HIS EXPRESSION IS DIM.

EDDIE SR. IS SINGING SOMETHING INCOHERENTLY

20.

He's driving slowly, and weaving down the desolate rural
road toward home. In the shadows, he notices a person
walking along the dusty shoulder. In the moon light, he
also sees the person has his thumb out. Eddie pulls up next
to him, rolling down the window.

                       EDWARD SR.
You lost, son?

                       HITCHHIKER
Naw. Just passing through. On my
way to Tennessee.

                       EDWARD SR.
Well, that's quite a long walk
you've got there. About two
states away.

Eddie sizes him up, smiling. The man, in his early twenties
and carrying a guitar is slightly tall and beefy.

                       EDWARD SR.
Hop in. I can take you as far as
Coffeyville. They have a hotel
there.

                       HITCHHIKER
      (gets in truck)
Thank you sir.

EDDIE HEADS DOWN THE ROAD

                       EDWARD SR.
Where you from?

                       HITCHHIKER
Topeka, sir.

                       EDWARD SR.
And you're hitching your way to
Tennessee with your guitar. Let
me guess - Nashville?

                       HITCHHIKER
That's right sir. I reckon on
being a country star one day.

                       EDWARD SR.
You any good with that thing?

                       HITCHHIKER
Oh yeah! Here, let me play you a
little something I wrote.

21.

HE PULLS OUT A DISTINCTIVE, CUSTOM MADE GUITAR

                       EDWARD SR.
Yeah sure. Real quick, I just
need to check up on my neighbors
house here. Out of town. (Beat)
That's a might fine guitar you got
there. Takemine?

                       HITCHHIKER
No sir. Martin. Had it custom
painted.

                       EDWARD SR.
It's a thing of beauty.

                       HITCHHIKER
Thank you sir.

Eddie pulls into his driveway and stops next to the
sunflowers. The hitchhiker begins to strum and sing, rather
well. Eddie is nodding and smiling, enjoying the music.

                       HITCHHIKER
Wow. Those are huge. Amazing.
Never seen them that big.

                       EDWARD SR.
Ah, yup. Biggest one's in the
state. Award winners, they are.

                       HITCHHIKER
They are something else.

                       EDWARD SR.
      (gets out of truck)
That they are. Goddamn son. You
are really good.

THE HITCHHIKER GETS OUT TO LOOK AT THE SUNFLOWERS

                       HITCHHIKER
Wow, they are so gosh darned tall!

                       EDWARD SR.
It's such a shame.

                       HITCHHIKER
What is sir?

                       EDWARD SR.
That no one will ever hear you
sing again.

22.

                       HITCHHIKER
      (scared and
       confused)
Huh?

From behind the hitchhiker, a group of sunflowers WRAP
themselves around him like an ANACONDA, pulling him into the
field before he has a chance to know what is happening to
him.

Eddie walks over to pick up the guitar, putting the strap
around his body.

                       EDWARD SR.
You kids enjoy yourselves. Should
hold you over until I can find
more.

HE STRUMS A FEW CHORDS THEN SINGS A BUCK OWENS TUNE:

                       EDWARD SR.
An all I gotta do is, act

shredded clothing. He bundles the bloody mess up, and puts
it into a paper back.

                       EDWARD SR.
Anything else my loves?

He looks up at the flowers, and satisfied he hasn't missed
anything, heads out of the field and into his truck.

From the back door, he makes a beeline toward a large tree.
Next to it is an apparent stockpile of junk - barbed wire,
rusty car door parts, tires, etc. He lifts up the car door,
then wipes away the dirt below it. A small 3x3 sized trap

door is revealed. Opening it, he drops the bag of what is
left of the hitchhiker into the hole.

has just missed the carnage. He parks across the street and
shuts off the lights, staring at the sunflower field.
Popping a Ativan, he sits, as if contemplating whether to go
and talk to his father. Seeing a light flick on upstairs,
Eddie Jr takes a deep breath and begins to exit the vehicle,
but a noise coming from the sunflower field STARTLES him.
It's grunting/gurgling type noise.

There is a look on his face as if he realizes what just
happened. Getting back inside the car, he turns on the
ignition and lights and leaves.

car, and watches it take off down the highway. He squints
and grimaces, then sits on the bed.

Grabbing a photo of an older Millicent, his gaze SOFTENS.
Pulling it to his chest, he starts to sob.

                       EDWARD SR.

24.

It is a hazy/blurred sequence. Millicent appears to be
standing on a ladder outside the house, painting. She turns
to look at the direction of the field. She has a horrified
look on her face.

Eddie Jr. is running out the front door and toward her, his
hands waving wildly.

                       EDWARD JR.
Mom!

Millicent falls off the ladder in slow motion, as a helpless
Eddie Jr. watches. Striking her head hard on the porch
railing, she is dead once she hits the ground.

                       EDWARD JR.
Mom!

He kneels next to her, but sees the large gash on the side
of her head. Cradling her and crying, he knows there is
nothing he can do. Glancing over at the sunflower field,
Eddie sees what she saw. The giants twisting and weaving
about. Making their appearance known to her.

nodding good mornings to his employees. Suddenly, he stops
at the mention of yet another missing person on the radio:

blue eyes, and was carrying a

Eddie Jr. touches the back of his neck as if the hairs are
standing on end.

                       CARL
Hey, I think I saw that feller.
Said he was going to Nashville.

                       EDWARD JR.
      (clears throat)
Where, where did you see him?

                       CARL
He was hitchhiking down Crescent
Valley Road. Yeah, I stopped on
the way home to see if he needed
help, but I was almost home and he
needed a ride to the next town and
couldn't do that.

                       EDWARD JR.
What time was this?

                       CARL
Oh, say around close to midnight.

                       EDWARD JR.
Hmm.

                       CARL
Why you asking?

                       EDWARD JR.
Oh nothing. I was just in the
area around that time, going to my
pa's house. Don't recall seeing
any hitchers.

                       CARL
Well, that's cuz he got picked up.
By your daddy, I think too.
Looked like his truck anyway. From
what I could see in the rear view
when I parked at home. Hard to
miss a truck like that.

26.

THE EMPLOYEE GLANCES OUT THE STOREFRONT WINDOW, POINTING

                       CARL
Yeah, see. There's your daddy
now. Truck looked like that too.

EDDIE SR. WALKS IN AND GRABS A CART

                       EDWARD SR.
Morning son. You come by last
night?

                       EDWARD JR.
I, uh…yeah…I mean no. I was, but
saw your bedroom lights go on and
didn't want to disturb you.

                       EDWARD SR.
I just wanted to apologize for
last night.

                       EDWARD JR.
Pa, don't worry about it...

THE EMPLOYEE CUTS HIM OFF

                       CARL
Hey Mister Jameson? Did you pick
up that hitcher last night? I
stopped to talk to him, but I
swore I saw your truck stop and
get him.

EDDIE SR LOOKS AT JR. THEN BACK AT EMPLOYEE SUSPICIOUSLY

                       EDWARD SR.
Why you asking?

                       CARL
      (nervous)
It's just that uh…heard on the
radio he's gone missing. Kid with
a guitar. (Whispers) I think we
were the last ones to see him.

                       EDWARD SR.
      (clears throat)
Oh, is that fact? Well, I did
indeed pick him up and took him as
far as Coffeyville. Said he
needed a place to stay.

27.

                       CARL
Maybe we should call the
police?...

                       EDWARD SR.
Now son. I dropped him off at the
Day's inn. It's early, he's
probably still sleeping and will
contact whomever is looking for
him when he gets up.

                       CARL
Yeah I guess your right. Still, I
think we should tell the police to
look there.

EDDIE JR. EYES HIS FATHER. SR. TAKES IN A DEEP BREATH.

                       EDWARD SR.
Well, I have some shopping to tend
to. Big weekend coming up.

                       CARL
Oh yes! The harvest festival! I
can't wait sir.

EDDIE SR. TIPS HIS BASEBALL CAP AND WALKS OFF.

                       CARL
Is he always so intimidating and
intense?

EDDIE JR. SAYS NOTHING, JUST WATCHES HIS DAD WALK AWAY.

                                         CUT TO

INT. GROCERY STORE CHECKOUT LINE - LATER

Eddie Sr. is paying for his items, glancing around the
store. Carl walks up to bag.

                       CARL
      (eager)
Need any help taking these out
Mister Jameson?

                       EDWARD SR.
I'd appreciate that son.

28.

SR. GLANCES UP AND CATCHES JR.'S GAZE. HE SMILES.

                       EDWARD SR.
After you.

CARL NODS, PUSHING THE OVER-FILLED CART OUT THE DOOR.

                                         CUT TO

EXT. PARKING LOT - MOMENTS LATER

CARL IS LOADING UP THE BACK OF THE TRUCK.

                       CARL
Crazy isn't it?

                       EDWARD SR.
What is son?

                       CARL
Well, I was just thinking. Every
year around this time, people and
pets go missing.

                       EDWARD SR.
So they say.

                       CARL
Don't you find that unusual?

EDDIE JUST SHAKES HIS HEAD TIGHT-LIPPED

                       CARL
      (continues to load
       truck)
I mean, I can see a few people
wanting to maybe up and leave this
town. There's nothing here. But
to straight up vanish? It's just,
I don't know. Don't you get
worried, sir?

                       EDWARD SR.
Naw. I don't think anyone wants
to mess with an old fella like
myself.

                       CARL
Yeah but it's been a mystery for
over fifty years. Even when you
were young. No offense.

29.

                       EDWARD SR.
None taken. Are you implying
something, son?

                       CARL
No sir, not at all. Just shakes
me up a bit that I saw that
hitcher last night, and now he's
gone missing.

                       EDWARD SR.
I can guarantee you, he hasn't
gone missing.

                       CARL
You sure about that?

                       EDWARD SR.
Oh yeah. (beat as he notices Jr.
watching them from the window.)
Say, son, you any good with
handiwork?

                       CARL
I've done a little bit here and
there.

                       EDWARD SR.
Well, since my son is too busy to
help out his old man, would you
mind coming out to the farm and
helping me fix a few things up?
Since I have the festival coming
up, need to get prepared. Missus
Jameson used to love doing that
sort of thing…(trails off)

                       CARL
Oh yeah, of course! Anything.

                       EDWARD SR.
I'll pay you for your time.

                       CARL
Great!

                       EDWARD SR.
Just one thing. Don't tell my
son. I don't think he would take
too kindly to me paying someone to
do a job he should be doing.

30.

                       CARL
I understand.

                       EDWARD SR.
Alright then. Come by after your
shift later today.

                       CARL
I'll be there this afternoon!

EDDIE SR. NODS, STILL SEES HIS SON LOOKING OUT THE WINDOW.

                                         CUT TO

INT. GROCERY STORE - MOMENTS LATER

                       EDWARD JR.
Everything okay?

                       CARL
Yeah, sir. Of course. Your dad
gave me a nice tip for helping him
out.

                       EDWARD JR.
What did my pa want?

                       CARL
Nothing. Just talked about the
festival coming up is all. (beat)
I should get back to stocking.

                       EDWARD JR.
Okay. Thank you Carl.

JR. WATCHES HIS FATHER DRIVE OUT OF THE PARKING LOT.

EXT. SUNFLOWER FIELD - MORNING

The young boy on the bike who was looking for his dog
before, has returned.

Parking his bike next to the sunflower field, he looks
around and notices that Eddie's truck isn't there.

                       CONNOR
Toby! Here boy, are you stuck in
there somewhere?

He walks into the maze. Looking up at the faces of the
flowers, an expression of confusion and dread come over him.

31.

                       CONNOR
Wow. You are so big. (Pause)
Toby! Toby?

Walking further into the maze, the young boy stops to get
his bearings. Unable to discern which direction he came
from, he starts to tremble and cry.

                       CONNOR
Toby?

Snapping, buzzing and gurgling sounds surround him. He
becomes more frightening, but doesn't know which direction
to run.

                       CONNOR
      (whimpers)
Help.

The snapping sounds become more VIOLENT sounding, scaring
him even more.

                       CONNOR
Is someone in here? Toby?

Seeing something shiny on the floor, the boy bends down to
pick it up. It is Toby's bloodied dog tag.

                       CONNOR
      (crying)
Where are you?

A final growl sends the child over the edge, and he runs out
of the maze, unsure of where he is running to.

                                         CUT TO

EXT. HIGHWAY - FRONT OF SUNFLOWER FIELD - CONTINUOUS

The boy runs right onto the highway, into the oncoming path
of a car, who swerves and crashes right into into the
sunflowers. The stalks of the sunflowers are so strong,
that the car wraps around them, shooting the driver out the
windshield and into the field.

Shocked and stunned, the young boy runs to get his bike and
heads out of there.

                                         CUT TO

32.

EXT. SUNFLOWER FIELD - MOMENTS LATER

The bloodied and banged up female driver that was ejected is
being strangled. She whimpers weakly as she is devoured.

EXT. BOY'S HOME - MOMENTS LATER

Hey drops the bike hastily, running up the steps screaming.

                       CONNOR
Mom! Accident at the farm!
Someone is hurt!

                                         CUT TO

EXT. SUNFLOWER FIELD - LATER

It suddenly begins to rain. Eddie Sr. notices the flashing
lights of EMERGENCY VEHICLES as he approaches his farm. He
stops, biting down on his lower lip and gripping the
steering wheel. Creeping closer, he sees a car tangled up
in his field.

                       EDWARD SR.
      (screams)
Goddammit!!

HE PULLS INTO THE DRIVEWAY, AND EXITS THE TRUCK.

                       EDWARD SR.
      (regaining his
       composure)
What happened here?

                       OFFICER FULLER
Mister Jameson. I'm very sorry.
Driver lost control and crashed
into your field here.

                       EDWARD SR.
Anybody hurt? Do you know how and
why this happened?

                       OFFICER FULLER
Can't say. Probably tried to
avoid an animal in the road.
Neighbor called it in after seeing
the crash.

                       EDWARD SR.
Who saw it? What did they see?

33.

                       OFFICER FULLER
Young boy riding his bike. Harris,
I think the family is, down the
road.

OFFICER POINTS OVER HIS SHOULDER.

                       EDWARD SR.
Yeah I know them. What did the
boy say? He see anything else?

                       OFFICER FULLER
Nothing much. Was riding his bike
when he heard the crash. Saw the
car tangled up in your field.

                       EDWARD SR.
Hmm.

                       OFFICER FULLER
What is it?

                       EDWARD SR.
The Harris boy has been sniffing
around here looking for his lost
dog.

THE RAIN FALLS HARDER.

                       OFFICER FULLER
Maybe the kid thought he saw it
and the driver tried to avoid
hitting the dog.

Eddie watches the emergency personnel traipsing through his
now muddy field. He looks nervous, but his plants appear to
be on their best behavior.

                       EDWARD SR.
Wait. You said you couldn't say
if someone was hurt? What did you
mean by that?

                       OFFICER FULLER
Well, we've been out here for ten
minutes looking for the driver. It
appears by the look of the
windshield that he or she was
ejected. We just can't find 'em.

                       EDWARD SR.
No body?

34.

                       OFFICER FULLER
No sir. No blood either. If there
was, this sudden rainfall washed
it away. Probably drunk or drugs
and fled on foot.

                       EDWARD SR.
Yeah probably. Hey, would you
mind having your men not trample
around in there too much? Trying
to get prepared for the harvest
festival.

                       OFFICER FULLER
Of course. I think we're all done
in there anyway. Mind if we have
a quick look around the property?
Make sure the driver isn't hiding
out somewhere?

                       EDWARD SR.
      (glances at the
       flowers again)
Yeah of course.

                       OFFICER FULLER
      (whistles)
Let's check the perimeter.

The officer waves his partner and firefighters out. Looking
over the shoulder of the officer he was speaking to, Eddie
Sr. sees remnants of clothing under the petal of one of the
flowers.

                       EDWARD SR.
Excuse me. I'm going to make sure
my flowers weren't harmed.

                       OFFICER FULLER
Of course.

HIS PARTNER WALKS UP TO HIM.

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
He's kind of obsessed with them in
a creepy way, don't you think.

EDDIE SR. IS STROKING THE PETALS AND STALKS OF THE FLOWERS

35.

                       OFFICER FULLER
Strange, I guess. But, they win
awards every year. Best in the
state thirty years running. Must
be doing something right.

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
He treats them like they are a
living thing.

                       OFFICER FULLER
Of course they are living things!
If you don't fertilize or water
them, they die.

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
Yeah.

                       OFFICER FULLER
Let's see if we can find the
driver.

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
Let's go.

                                         CUT TO

EXT. STREET - CONTINUOUS

The Harris boy is sitting on his bike, watching the
going-ons. He spies Eddie Sr. pick up a piece of tattered
and bloody clothing, look around, then stuff it in his
pocket. The boy gasps, and takes off back toward his home
before he is spotted.

                                         CUT TO

EXT. EDDIE JR'S HOME - AFTERNOON

The rain has somewhat subsided. Eddie Jr. pulls into his
driveway, when there is a tap at his window. Startled, he
jumps, noticing the officer. Eddie exits his vehicle.

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
Didn't mean to startle you.

                       EDWARD JR.
      (confused)
Something I can do for you
officer?

36.

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
Well, there was an accident at
your father's farm this morning
and...

                       EDWARD SR.
Is my dad okay?

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
He's fine, he's fine. A car got
into a bit of a scuffle with his
sunflower field. The car lost.

                       EDWARD JR.
Bet he isn't too happy about that.

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
No he wasn't.

                       EDWARD JR.
His beloved plants get destroyed?

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
No. That's the thing. They
appeared to be unharmed. Damndest
thing. Couldn't find the driver
either.

                       EDWARD JR.
Well, they are pretty sturdy I
reckon. Why are you telling me
all this?

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
No disrespect…but...

                       EDWARD JR.
But?

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
Things seemed a bit…I don't know,
off?

EDDIE JR. CROSSES HIS ARMS AND SHUFFLES HIS FEET.

                       EDWARD JR.
Off?

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
Look, I know the talk around here.
About your time in the…facility.
You think there is something going
on there, don't you?

37.

                       EDWARD JR.
How do you mean?

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
The way your father was
interacting with them was just a
bit odd.

                       EDWARD JR.
That he is.

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
The talk about you. That you
think your father's garden is
living somehow? That you think
there is a connection between
people who have gone missing and
the sunflowers?

                       EDWARD JR.
Look officer. I was in a bad
place. I'm getting therapy for
it. If you're here to get me to
admit to something I've said in
the past...

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
I'm not here to have you committed
again. I just noticed something
strange is all. My partner didn't
want to hear it. But, where did
the driver go? Clearly, he or she
was ejected.

                       EDWARD JR.
Well, maybe they got away.

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
I think you and I believe
something else.

                       EDWARD JR.
I don't know what to say to that,
officer.

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
Okay, okay. (beat) Do you know
the Harris boy?

                       EDWARD JR.
Connor, yeah why?

38.

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
He's the one that called the
accident in. Says his dog has
gone missing.

                       EDWARD JR.
Yeah, he hung a flier up at the
market earlier.

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
I'm just wondering if maybe he saw
something as well.

                       EDWARD JR.
Well have you spoken to him?

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
He wouldn't say much. I was
hoping that maybe you could speak
to him?

                       EDWARD JR.
Me?

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
Yeah…If, maybe…(he pauses)

                       EDWARD JR.
Look officer. I appreciate that
you believe whatever I have said
in the past. But, I'm trying to
put it all behind me. Trying to
live a normal life.

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
How did your mother die again?

EDWARD GULPS AND TAKES A FEW DEEP BREATHS.

                       EDWARD JR.
Fell and hit her head while she
was doing some painting on the
side of the house. I saw it
happen. (Pause) Now, if you
don't mind, I would like to go
inside.

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
Of course. Here's my card if you
can think of anything. And I do
mean it. I believe something
isn't right. You want to talk,
give me a call.

39.

                       EDWARD JR.
Thanks.

                       CARL
Afternoon Mister Jameson.

EDDIE SR. EXITS THE HOUSE WITH A DRINK IN HAND.

                       EDWARD SR.
Carl.

                       CARL
Unexpected weather today.

                       EDWARD SR.
That it was.

                       CARL
Still need my help?

                       EDWARD SR.
Yeah, let's get started. Paint
will have to wait till later in
the week, but I'd be much obliged
if you could help me with doing
some clearing up around here?

                       CARL
Absolutely.

Carl is shown doing various and mundane tasks around the
property; stacking wood, throwing old siding into a
dumpster. He hears the soft humming of a guitar coming
from inside the house. Curious, he walks up the steps to
peek through the screen door.

                       CARL
Mister Jameson? You in there?

EDDIE SR. WALKS UP, THE HITCHHIKER'S GUITAR IN HIS HAND.

                       EDWARD SR.
Need something, son? Thirsty?

40.

                       CARL
No, I just heard the singing and
was wondering…(pauses, noticing
the guitar) Hey, that looks like
the guitar that belongs to that
missing hitcher.

EDDIE SR. OPENS THE SCREEN DOOR AND WALKS ONTO THE PORCH.

                       EDWARD SR.
This guitar here?

CARL GULPS, WALKING BACK DOWN THE STAIRS.

                       CARL
Yeah. Looks like it.

                       EDWARD SR.
Well, it's mine now.

EDDIE WALKS TOWARD CARL.

                       CARL
What…What happened to him? What
did you do?

                       EDWARD SR.
I didn't do anything Carl.

                       CARL
      (stuttering)
You didn't?

                       EDWARD SR.
Of course not. Look at me! Do I
look like I could do something to
someone?

EDDIE WALKS TOWARD HIM, PUSHING HIM TOWARD THE GARDEN

                       CARL
      (nervous laughter)
Of course not. Of course not.

                       EDWARD SR.
However...

Eddie Sr. looks over Carl's shoulder at the sunflowers
beginning to sway.

                       EDWARD SR.
My babies get really hungry. And
it's feeding time.

41.

                       CARL
Your babies?

CARL LOOKS OVER HIS SHOULDER, AND IS STRUCK.

                       CARL
      (squealing)
Mister Jameson!

                       EDWARD SR.
Eat up my loves! I can't believe
after all you've had today, you
aren't full!

                       CARL
      (trying to scream)
What?

Carl is squeezed, then snapped in half. Some blood
SPLATTERS across Eddie's cheek. He wipes it away with the
back of his hand, then turns back toward the house,
strumming the guitar.

How are you feeling today, Edward?

                       EDWARD JR.
I'm not sure. An officer came by
to see me yesterday.

                       DR. VASQUEZ
An officer?

                       EDWARD JR.
Yeah. There was an accident at my
pa's place. Car accident.

                       DR. VASQUEZ
Oh. And?

42.

                       EDWARD JR.
The car drove into his sunflower
field. The driver wasn't found.

                       DR. VASQUEZ
What did the officer want with
you?

                       EDWARD JR.
      (sighs heavily)
He said that he believes me. About
why I was committed before. He
thinks there is something weird
going on there.

                       DR. VASQUEZ
Is that so? And what did you say
to that?

                       EDWARD JR.
Nothing. I didn't admit to
thinking anything of the sort to
him. I know I've said some
things, and I may have seen some
things, but in retrospect, I
hadn't had any sleep in days
and...

                       DR. VASQUEZ
And you know that you were
hallucinating?

                       EDWARD JR.
Yes.

                       DR. VASQUEZ
Edward. It sounds like you are
trying to convince me of that more
then yourself.

                       EDWARD JR.
I don't…My pills are helping me
out, I already told you.

                       DR. VASQUEZ
Eddie. Look at me. What do you
believe, really?

His answer is interrupted by his phone ringing. Noticing it
is the store, he goes to answer it.

43.

                       EDWARD JR.
Excuse me. It's work. (pause)
Hello? (pause again) He didn't?
Well did you try to call…Okay…No
that's not like him at all.
(pause) They did? Okay, thanks.
I'll be right in.

                       DR. VASQUEZ
Everything okay?

                       EDWARD JR.
      (confused)
One of my employees didn't show up
for work today. His roommate
called, saying he never came home
last night.

                       DR. VASQUEZ
Is that unusual for him?

                       EDWARD JR.
He's worked for me for two years.
He's a very responsible employee.
Excuse me doc, I need to go.

                       DR. VASQUEZ
Okay then. I'll see you next
week.

Eddie putting the car back in drive. Connor abruptly runs

                       EDWARD JR.
So, I heard you say that Carl
didn't come home at all?

                       JIMMY
No, it's not like him. He doesn't
have much of a life, you know? Not
like he met some chick and decided
to head to her place and bang her,
know what I mean?

                       EDWARD JR.
Do you remember the last thing he
said to you? He mention anything?

                       JIMMY
Just that he picked up a quick
side job after work. (Pauses)
Sorry, I wasn't supposed to tell
you.

                       EDWARD JR.
What do you mean, you weren't
supposed to tell me? I don't have
any type of policy or rule that
says employees can't get a job on
the side. As long as it doesn't
interfere with their job here.

                       JIMMY
I don't know what he meant. He
just told me not to mention it to
anyone, especially you.

45.

                       EDWARD JR.
Well, it's obvious Carl has gone
missing so you're going to need to
mention it. Have you called the
police yet?

                       JIMMY
No I just wanted to check here
first before I did that, on
account that I know he was
supposed to open this morning.

                       EDWARD JR.
Jimmy, did he mention what the
side job was? Where it was at?

                       JIMMY
No, just some handyman work for
some quick, extra cash.

                       EDWARD JR.
Handyman work?

                       JIMMY
Yeah that's what he said. You
don't think this is related to all
those people that have gone
missing?

                       EDWARD JR.
I don't know. First thing we need
to do though, call the cops. (He
pauses, taking the business card
out of his wallet) In fact, I'll
do it, okay? I know someone
there.

                       JIMMY
Okay.

                       EDWARD JR.
Why don't you head on home, and
I'll call you later?

                       JIMMY
Okay, thanks Mister Jameson.

                       EDWARD JR.
Uh huh.

Edward Jr. thinks for a moment, flicking the business card

Through the window behind him, we can see Carl's car. There
are groaning and snapping sounds coming from another
direction. Annoyed, he sits the guitar down, and heads out
the front door. Standing on the porch, he sees that that
the sounds are coming from the sunflower garden. Quickly,
he walks toward them.

                       EDWARD SR.
Not right now!

A few of the plants encircle him.

                       EDWARD SR.
Didn't you have enough last night!
This is getting out of control.

THE CIRCLE AROUND HIM GETS TIGHTER.

                       EDWARD SR.
Okay, okay, fine! I'll try to
find you something. Give me a
little time. I'm not used to you
all wanting to eat so fast!

THE SUNFLOWERS BACK OFF.

                       EDWARD SR.
You all listen to me, the fest...

He is distracted by the sound of tires on gravel. A car is
coming up the drive. Walking around the edge of the
flowers, he sees it's a cop car. His looks toward the rear
of the house, hoping that Carl's car is not in sight.

47.

                       EDWARD SR.
Afternoon, officer. Can I help
you with something?

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
Just doing some follow up on a
missing person.

THE OFFICER GLANCES AT THE FLOWERS, THEN SIDESTEPS AWAY

                       EDWARD SR.
Missing person? You mean the
driver who plowed into my field?

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
We've come up empty with that. No,
an employee of your son named
Carl, didn't show up for work
today.

                       EDWARD SR.
I don't see what that has to do
with me.

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
According to his room mate, he was
supposed to head to a side job
after work to do some handyman
stuff.

                       EDWARD SR.
I still don't understand what that
has to do with me.

                       EDWARD SR.
Mister Jameson, did Carl come by
your farm yesterday to do any work
for you?

                       EDWARD SR.
What kind of work could get done
the way the weather was yesterday?

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
I know, yesterday was an upsetting
day for you.

                       EDWARD SR.
You're damn right it was!

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
I just need to follow up.

48.

                       EDWARD SR.
You know these kids nowadays. No
sense of respect or
responsibility. Probably off
chasing tail somewhere.

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
Well, from what I was told by his
room mate, as well as your son,
he's not that type of kid.

                       EDWARD SR.
Well. I guess you can't really
every know people, now can you
officer. You of all people should
know that.

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
Thank you for your time. Sorry to
interrupt. I'll let you get on
with your day.

                       EDWARD SR.
I have a lot to prepare for, and
not much time to do it.

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
Of course.

THE OFFICER WALKS AWAY, THEN STOPS NEAR THE CAR.

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
One more thing.

                       EDWARD SR.
What?

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
There's a missing out of Topeka.
Singer or something. Your son had
mentioned that Carl claimed to
have seen him. Says you picked
him up?

                       EDWARD SR.
      (nervous)
Yeah, so?

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
So you admit to giving this kid,
Easton Ray Miller a ride?

49.

                       EDWARD SR.
I never caught his name. But
yeah. Needed a hotel for the
night, dropped him off in
Coffeyville. What he did after
that, isn't my concern.

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
Thank you Mister Jameson.

The officer gets into his patrol car and leaves. Edward Sr.
watches until he is out of sight.

                       EDWARD SR.

Got a nice treat for all of you.
Are you ready?

THE FLOWERS LEAN TOWARD THE CAR. EDDIE OPENS THE BACK DOOR

                       EDWARD SR.
Have at it, loves.

51.

The dogs and cats run out, along with a pygmy goat. They
look happy, as they head straight into the sunflower maze.
Suddenly, there are dog yelps, cat screeches, a goat
bleating and snapping sounds.

                       EDWARD SR.
That better do it for a few days.
I can't keep up with you all. And
I don't need the police sniffing
round here no more!

EDWARD THINKS FOR A MOMENT, THEN LOOKS OVER AT HIS COW.

                       EDWARD SR.
I really shouldn't. No, I
shouldn't.

HE SHAKES HIS HEAD, AS IF ARGUING WITH HIMSELF.

                       EDWARD SR.
No, I need her. She's my milk
cow.

THE FLOWERS SNAP TO ATTENTION, LOOKING STRAIGHT AT THE COW

                       EDWARD SR.
I said no!

IT IS APPARENT THAT THE FLOWERS TALK TO HIM SOMEHOW.

                       EDWARD SR.
Not my Daisy!

HE SLAPS THE FACE OF ONE OF THE FLOWERS HARD.

                       EDWARD SR.
I say no, and that's final! I'll
find you a different cow.

THE FLOWERS RETREAT FOR NOW.

                                         CUT TO

EXT. HARRIS HOUSE - EVENING

Edward Jr. pulls up to the house. He sees Connor watching
him from his upstairs window, quickly disappearing. Cracking
his neck, he pops a pill, then exits the vehicle. Walking up
to the house, Connor answers he door.

                       CONNOR
I know why you're here.

52.

                       EDWARD JR.
You do?

                       CONNOR
I've seen things. I know you seen
them too.

                       MRS. HARRIS (vo)
Connor? Is someone at the door?

                       CONNOR
It's nobody mom.

MRS. HARRIS COMES TO THE DOOR.

                       MRS. HARRIS
Oh, hi there Eddie.

                       EDWARD JR.
Evelyn.

                       MRS. HARRIS
Everything all right?

                       CONNOR
Yeah mom. Mister Jameson offered
to help me search for Toby.

                       EDWARD JR.
Yeah, yeah. If it's all right
with you, Evelyn? He had put up
some fliers at the store the other
day.

                       MRS. HARRIS
Oh that mutt! I haven't heard the
end of it. Of course honey, maybe
you can cover more ground in the
car. Be back in time for dinner,
okay?

                       CONNOR
K, mom. Thanks.

SHE KISSES HIS CHEEK BEFORE HE HEADS OUT THE DOOR.

                                         CUT TO

INT. EDWARD JR'S CAR - CONTINUOUS

                       CONNOR
We're not really going to look for
Toby. He's dead.

EDWARD STARTS UP THE CAR AND HEADS DOWN THE ROAD

                       EDWARD JR.
How do you know?

                       CONNOR
I found this in your dad's field.

HE PULLS OUT THE BLOODIED COLLAR.

                       EDWARD JR.
Doesn't mean that he's dead. That
could be anything.

                       CONNOR
He's dead. And I know you
believe that. You're not crazy,
and I'm not either. I've seen
things.

                       EDWARD JR.
What have you seen?

                       CONNOR
I was walking around yesterday
looking for Toby when I found it.
I heard some weird growling
sounds. That's when I got scared
and ran out into the street. That
lady almost ran me over.

                       EDWARD JR.
You saw the person who crashed
into the field driving the car?

                       CONNOR
It was really quick. She got
thrown out. I saw those flowers
wrap around her really quick. I
took off. Thought I was seeing
things, until...

                       EDWARD JR.
Until what?

                       CONNOR
I saw that guy that works for you.

54.

                       EDWARD JR.
Carl? You saw Carl at my pa's?

                       CONNOR
I don't know his name, but I know
it was him. He looked…scared.
Backed right into the field. They
grabbed him. Sucked him right in.
And your dad...

                       EDWARD JR.
What about him?

                       CONNOR
It didn't seem to bother him. He
just walked away calmly, playing
the guitar.

                       EDWARD JR.
What are you talking about? My
dad doesn't have a guitar.

                       CONNOR
He does now.

                       EDWARD JR.
Why didn't you tell the police any
of this?

                       CONNOR
Would you listen to yourself? I
know what happened to you when you
tried to tell people about it
before. No offense, but I don't
want to end up in the loony bin.

                       EDWARD JR.
You have a point. What do you
think we should do?

                       CONNOR
I don't know. I thought about
trying to film what goes on, but
I'm afraid your dad will see me
and feed me to his garden.

                       EDWARD JR.
No. Don't do anything that will
risk your life. I don't think my
dad will hurt you, you're a kid.
But, just don't.

55.

                       CONNOR
Have you ever seen them eat
someone?

                       EDWARD JR.
No. Not a person. When I was
four, I remember seeing my dog go
into the field and never come out.
I heard these strange noises. Of
course, my dad convinced me it was
all in my head. It's what my
doctor tries to convince me now.

                       CONNOR
You see a shrink?

                       EDWARD JR.
And take these pills.

HE SHAKES THE CONTAINER OF ATIVAN.

                       CONNOR
Bummer.

                       EDWARD JR.
It's not so bad. I talk to her
once a week. Tell her that I
believe all of it was in my head
so I don't end up back there. Take
my medicine like a good boy.

                       CONNOR
What about that cop?

                       EDWARD JR.
the cop?

                       CONNOR
Yeah, he came over asking me what
I saw. I think he believes
something strange is going on.

                       EDWARD JR.
Yeah, he's told me that.

                       CONNOR
So then, we should both go to him
and tell him.

                       EDWARD JR.
I don't know. I want to trust
him, but not sure yet.

56.

                       CONNOR
He could be our only chance to put
a stop to your dad. To put a stop
to him killing people!

                       EDWARD JR.
He says he can't do much unless he
has some kind of proof. He needs
evidence.

                       CONNOR
So we walk around your dad's
place, avoiding the deadly man
eating flowers of course, and see
what we can find. There has to be
something there.

                       EDWARD JR.
We aren't going to do anything.
Let me handle it. I don't need to
sneak around my dad's house. I
can just go and visit him. He's
been asking me to come over
anyway. When he takes a nap, I'll
nose around and...

Driving back toward Connor's home, they pass Edward Sr.'s
farm. Something catches Jr.'s eye. Backing up the car, he
sees the rear of Carls car on the other side of the house.

                       EDWARD JR.
Oh my god.

                       CONNOR
What is it?

                       EDWARD JR.
I think I found our evidence.
(Pause) That's Carl's car back
there.

                       CONNOR
So you need to call that officer
and tell him you found the car.

                       EDWARD JR.
Yeah. Hey wait. You said my dad
was playing a guitar.

                       CONNOR
Yeah.

57.

                       EDWARD JR.
That kid that went missing from
Topeka. My dad admits to picking
him up. He was a singer and he
had a very distinct guitar with
him. Carl saw him. The day he
disappeared, he mentioned to my
dad that the kid had gone missing.
I bet my dad asked Carl to come
by and do some work for him. Asked
him a few questions to see what he
knew. Carl saw the guitar, became
suspicious and my dad...

                       CONNOR
Your dad fed him.

                       EDWARD JR.
It sounds crazy.

                       CONNOR
Yeah but. If the cops can get
here, see two things from two
different missing people…Maybe
they will find more stuff.

                       EDWARD JR.
yeah maybe.

                       CONNOR
I saw on a TV show that serial
killers like to keep trophies of
their victims.

                       EDWARD JR.
Wait, what? you shouldn't be
watching that kind of thing. How
old are you again?

                       CONNOR
I'm almost eleven.

CONNOR EXITS THE CAR.

                       EDWARD JR.
Let me handle this, okay. Do not
go anywhere near my father's farm,
you understand?

                       CONNOR
Not even for the harvest festival?

58.

                       EDWARD JR.
Especially the harvest festival!
If all goes well, it will be shut
down this year anyway.

                       CONNOR
Aw man! But I was looking forward
to the bouncy house and cotton
candy!

                       EDWARD JR.
Connor. There is a large field of
flesh eating, mutant sunflowers. I
think you can go without the
bounce house and cotton candy.

                       CONNOR
Yeah okay.

                       EDWARD JR.
I'm going to call the police. Let
them sort it out okay.

                       CONNOR
Got it.

EDWARD JR. WATCHES UNTIL CONNOR IS SAFELY INSIDE THE HOUSE

                                         CUT TO

EXT. CRESCENT VALLEY ROAD - CONTINUOUS

                                         CUT TO

EXT. SUNFLOWER FIELD - CLOSE UP - CONTINUOUS

They appear to watch Edward Jr. drive out of sight. The
sound of a large bullfrog is heard, then seen. As it jumps
into the field, it is quickly devoured.

                                         CUT TO

EXT. TAVERN - NIGHT

EDWARD JR. IS IN THE PARKING LOT, HE CALLS THE OFFICER.

59.

                       EDWARD JR.
Hey. I think I found that evidence
that you need.

                                         CUT TO

EXT. FARMHOUSE - NIGHT

Officer #2 slowly drives up, killing the engine and lights.
Exiting the car, he glances at the Harris house. Noticing
Connor in the window, he nods to him. Connor nods back. The
officer quietly walks up the driveway, a seeming safe
distance away from the sunflower field and toward the back
of the house.

                                         CUT TO

EXT. FARMHOUSE - CLOSE UP - MOMENTS LATER

Officer #2 sees Carl's vehicle in the back. Swallowing
nervously, he reaches for his radio and drops it. The
static sounds cause the field to start gurgling and
grunting. Edward Sr. comes walking out.

                       EDWARD SR.
      (yelling)
Who's out here!

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
      (gun drawn)
Hands on your head, Mister
Jameson!

                       EDWARD SR.
      (walking toward
       him)
Whats the meaning of this?

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
I'm taking you in for questioning
in the disappearance of Carl
Hutchins and Easton Ray Miller!

                       EDWARD SR.
What? They're not missing.

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
Mister Hutchin's vehicle is back
there. Don't come any closer!

60.

                       EDWARD SR.
      (yells)
They're not missing!

Officer #2, walks backward, tripping over his feet. Several
flowers reach down, pulling him into the field. Yelling, he
lets out several shots. A high-pitched wail emits from the
field. Then it goes quiet.

                       EDWARD SR.
Enjoy that one. I hope you like
pig.

HE CACKLES LIKE A CRAZY PERSON.

                                         CUT TO

Connor is on the floor, hyperventilating.

                       CONNOR
      (whispers)
He killed him…he killed him.

THE SOUND OF AN ENGINE AND A VEHICLE DRIVING IS HEARD.

                       CONNOR
What was that?

Connor peeks out the window cautiously. He sees the police
car driving down the road and out of sight.

                                         CUT TO

                       EDWARD SR.
Son. Of. A. BITCH!

He turns up a road that leads to an empty field. Killing
the engine, he lives the key in the ignition and wipes down
the steering wheel and seat. Content that he has completely
wiped it down, he walks back toward the highway.

Another one, Billy.

                       BILLY
Sure thing.

Looking at the time, he grabs his phone and dials the

dark. Finding a gate, he coaxes the cow to come out.

                       EDWARD SR.
That's it. Let's go for a little
walk, shall we?

Closing the gate back up, he turns to the cow and hooks his
fingers around it's muzzle. They continue toward the
farmhouse.

I promise it will only hurt a bit.

62.

HE LEADS IT INTO THE FIELD.

                       EDWARD SR.
Okay my babies. This is the last
of it for now. I want you to be
on your best behavior. The
festival is in two days, and I
don't want you eating my
customers!

Edward makes his way out. The carnage, mooing, crushing and
snapping commence.

INT. POLICE STATION - NEXT DAY - DAY

Several residents are at the front desk, in various stages
of upset over their pets and/or livestock that have gone
missing.

                       OFFICER FULLER
What do you make of this,
lieutenant?

                       LT. YOUNG
I don't know. I can't make heads
or tails of it.

                       OFFICER FULLER
Maybe we have one of those, what
are they called? Chupacabras?

                       LT. YOUNG
First of all, they drink the blood
of the animals and leave the
carcass behind. Second of all,
they don't exist.

                       OFFICER FULLER
      (thinking)
They drink the blood?

                       LT. YOUNG
What?

                       OFFICER FULLER
No, nothing. Nothing at all.

                       LT. YOUNG
Just sounds like we have a thief.
Simple as that.

63.

                       OFFICER FULLER
Yeah, but. What about the missing
people?

                       LT. YOUNG
Can't possibly be related, unless
someone is kidnapping cows and
people.

                       DISPATCHER
Lieutenant. Sorry to interrupt,
but McMillen's unit has been
found.

                       OFFICER FULLER
McMillen? What do you mean?

                       DISPATCHER
I don't know. I was told by
graveyard that he left to do a
follow up, didn't say where, and
he never checked in.

                       LT. YOUNG
Any sign of him?

                       DISPATCHER
Nothing, just his car.

                       OFFICER FULLER
I'm just hearing about this now?

                       LT. YOUNG
Fuller I'm sorry. (To the
dispatcher) Thank you, I'll head
out there right now.

                       OFFICER FULLER
I'm coming with you.

                       LT. YOUNG
No, I need you here and take care
of these people. Don't worry. I'm
sure he's fine.

                       OFFICER FULLER
He's been missing all night. How
can you say he's fine? I don't
think it's a coincidence that he
goes missing the same night all
these people's cows, goats and
pets do?

64.

                       LT. YOUNG
He's a trained officer. Maybe he
followed out suspect out into the
fields, maybe he's out of radio
range.

                       OFFICER FULLER
Something isn't right.

                       LT. YOUNG
Just take care of this. I'll
radio you if I find out anything.

Several trucks are parked around the property. There are
trailers with carnival type of rides and games on the back,
food vendors are setting up in an empty field adjacent to
the sunflower field, and some workers are putting up a large
banner at the entrance.

                       EDWARD SR.
Yeah right there, that looks
perfect. (He looks around to make
sure his field behaves) Perfect.

A small group of men and women approach Edward. They are
the JUDGES coming to judge his field this year. A blonde
woman in her mid forties extends her hand.

                       JUDGE #1
      (smiling)
Mister Jameson. Always a
pleasure.

                       EDWARD SR.
Yes ma'am.

                       JUDGE #1
My goodness! Just look at this.
Look. At. This!

SHE WALKS UP, CARESSING THE PETAL OF ONE OF THE FLOWERS

                       JUDGE #2
Stunning. You never disappoint,
Jameson.

65.

                       EDWARD SR.
Well, my family. We always pride
ourselves on tending to them with
love and care.

                       JUDGE #1
Just what on Earth do you feed
them to get them so tall? Look at
the color of the stems and petal,
absolutely unparalleled.

                       EDWARD SR.
It's a Jameson family secret. A
special blend of fertilizer that
we've used for years.

                       JUDGE #2
You've done it again, Jameson. I
tell you, no one comes close.
Whatever you're doing, keep it up.

                       EDWARD SR.
Will do.

                       JUDGE #1
      (flirty)
Always such a wonderful thing you
do for the community here. Hosting
such an amazing event.

                       EDWARD SR.
I enjoy it. God willing, I'll be
able to do it a few more years.

                       JUDGE #2
Doesn't your son express any
interest in taking the reigns one
day?

                       EDWARD SR.
Junior? No, I can't seem to get
him to understand the importance
of this event. How it brings the
community together.

                       JUDGE #2
That's a shame. Well, here's to
hoping you can keep this tradition
alive for many more years to come.

                       JUDGE #1
I was so sorry to hear about
Millicent.

66.

                       EDWARD SR.
Yes. Tragic. This was always her
favorite time of year.

                       JUDGE #1
I can see why.

                       EDWARD SR.
Thank you again. If you will
excuse me, I have a lot of
preparations to make.

                       JUDGE #2
Of course.

Judge #1 puts a giant 1ST PLACE - BLUE RIBBON staked in
front of the sunflowers. Smiling, she gently strokes the
stem again.

I heard they found his car down

at the station this morning
reporting their animals went
missing last night.

How do you?

                       EDWARD JR.
Well we both know that they'll
never find him.

                       CONNOR
We need to say something before
something else happens.

                       EDWARD JR.
Too late. Besides, what do we
say? My dad's field ate him, as
well as all those animals. No,
no. I think my dad fattens them
up just before, so they don't eat
the patrons. Tomorrow is the
festival. People will be safe
tomorrow and for a few months
after that when the field goes

What in the hell is going on here?

The Lt. walks around trying to make sense of the scene. He
scans the ground and the surrounding area, coming up empty.
He continues to walk toward the road, looking up and down
it. To his right, he sees a set of footprints and begins to
follow it. They end in front of a fence. Squinting, he
picks up his radio.

                       LT. YOUNG
I understand there was an incident
on your property?

                       EDWARD SR.
Yes, yes. An accident. Car drove
into my sunflower field.

                       LT. YOUNG
That's an award winning garden
you've got there.

didn't affect your win this year?

                       EDWARD SR.
No, they're pretty strong and
hearty those plants.

I understand the driver hasn't
been found yet.

So I was told. So I was told. Is
there something I can help you

I have an officer that has gone

                       EDWARD SR.
Oh no!

                       LT. YOUNG
Yes. Strange thing. These
disappearances. Anyway, I know
Officer McMillen was one of the
responding officers to the
accident.

                       EDWARD SR.
McMillen…McMillen. Oh yes! I
remember him.

                       LT. YOUNG
So you would have remembered if he
came by yesterday?

                       EDWARD SR.
Absolutely.

                       LT. YOUNG
Okay. I won't keep you any
longer. Thank you so much for
your time.

taking pictures, etc. Everybody appears to be happy and
calm. Edward Sr. is seen walking around greeting people.

Edward Jr. pulls up across the street, watching the
activities. He takes an Ativan from the console. He grips
the steering wheel, taking a few deep breaths in. Watching
a couple holding the hand of their toddler skipping happily
across the street, he finally decides to exit the vehicle

It's up to over five acres now.
I'm really glad you came home.

                       EDWARD SR.
I'm not sure I like your tone son.

                       EDWARD JR.
They sure are tall. Just doesn't
seem right.

                       EDWARD SR.
What?

                       EDWARD JR.
For them to be taller then us.

                       EDWARD SR.
Is that what your fear has been
about all these years? How big
they are?

                       EDWARD JR.
Part of it.

                       EDWARD SR.
One day son, this will be all

of them for me. Pamper them. Love
them. They're our bread and
butter.

                       EDWARD JR.
Sure dad. I'll take care of them.

                       EDWARD SR.
That's my boy. Say, any word on

                       EDWARD SR.
Don't give up hope, son.

Yeah sure. In a while. I could
sure use a bite right now. Smells
amazing out here.

                       EDWARD SR.
We have the best barbecue north of
Texas and West of the Mississipi!
Go ahead son, anything you want.
We have ribs, chicken, try-tip,
sausages.

                       EDWARD JR.
Thanks dad.

                       EDWARD SR.
Oh hell, I'll come with you. I
put in a new beer garden this
year. I think it's going to be
pretty popular.

                       EDWARD JR.
You spared no expense.

                       EDWARD SR.
You know this is like Christmas
for me every year! It's what we
work toward. Make it a special
community event.

                       EDWARD JR.
It's just sad that a few people
each year don't get to enjoy it on
account that they go missing.

                       EDWARD SR.
Well, there's nothing we can do
about that now.

Something catches Edward Jr's attention off in the field
behind the sunflowers. A shimmering glint, as well as
something black. Before he can say something, something
else catches his eye. The young toddler who was skipping
happily with her parents, is now walking through the
sunflower maze. He sees a sunflower LURCH at the girl.
Others are walking through the maze, but for some reason,
the flowers are only paying attention to her. He sees it
again, and runs toward her.

74.

                       EDWARD JR.
Oh my god!

                       EDWARD SR.
      (following)
Junior! What the hell are you
doing?

Edward Jr. grabs the little girl, who begins to kick and
scream at him.

                       TODDLER
Stranger, stranger, help! Mommy!

The horrified mother rips the child out of Edward's arms.
Edward turns his attention back to the sunflower field.

                       EDWARD JR.
Everyone get out! You're not safe
in there!

                       EDWARD SR.
Junior, just what the goddamn hell
are you doing?

                       EDWARD JR.
      (frantic)
They're still hungry dad! They're
not done feeding! I saw it!

                       MOTHER
What is going on here? Why did
you grab my child?

                       EDWARD SR.
Marylou, let me apologize for my
son. He's going through some
things. He meant no harm.

                       EDWARD JR.
She was in danger! (to the field)
Everyone is in danger, please get
out of there!

                       MOTHER
What do you mean danger? Edward?
What is he talking about?

Edward Sr. steps in front of the woman holding her child. At
that moment, a sunflower snatches Edward Sr. Clearly it was
meant for the mother and the child.

75.

                       EDWARD JR.
Everybody out. NOW!

                       MOTHER
Oh my god!

Edward Jr. grabs his father's elbow, trying to tug him free.
Faint screams as well as crunching noises can be heard
coming from within the field.

                       EDWARD JR.
Pa!! Make them stop! There are
others out there. I can't get you
out.

Edward Sr. is getting strangled. His eyes start to bulge
and bleed. A trail of blood seeps from his nostrils. He is
wheezing trying to speak, while reaching out to his son.
Blood vessels burst his eyes.

                       EDWARD JR.
Dad!

Eddie Jr. continues to tug on his father, but the flower
knocks him to the ground. People trample over him in the
chaos. Looking up at his father, he sees the last bit of
life being squeezed out of him.

                       EDWARD JR.
Fertilizer.

The entire field begins to contort wildly, trying to snatch
up people as they pass by. Edward Jr. manages to get to his
feet, running toward the farmhouse. Checking the side, he
finds several containers of kerosene. Connor runs up behind
him.

                       EDWARD JR.
Connor! I told you to stay put!

                       CONNOR
You're going to need all the help
you can get.

                       EDWARD JR.
Okay. I'll douse the perimeter.
When I signal you, throw this
lighter into it, okay?

                       CONNOR
Got it.

76.

                       EDWARD JR.
Stay back as far as you can. Don't
get near them!

                       CONNOR
I won't. Go, go!

Edward runs toward the field, throwing kerosene around the
perimeter, dodging vines as he goes. One grabs him, but he
manages to get himself free. Throwing the empty can into
the field, he frantically waves his hands to Connor.

                       EDWARD JR.
Now! Do it now!

Connor takes a deep breath, flicks the lighter, then tosses
it into the field. It quickly catches fire. The field
begins to SCREAM and WRITH. Through the haze, flashing red
and blue lights can be seen coming up the road.

                       CONNOR
No, no, no! They're going to try
to put it out!

Getting to his feet again, Edward Jr. heads toward whatever
caught his attention earlier. It's officer McMillen. He's
tattered, bruised and bloody but alive.

                       EDWARD JR.
You're safe. I got you.

Edward gently lifts him up, walking him toward the
farmhouse.

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
      (grunting)
Told you I believed you.

                       EDWARD JR.
Yeah. Almost cost you your life.

The field is now completely engulfed in flames. Edward sets
Officer McMillen down on the front steps. Units roll up
toward them. Officer Fuller and Lt. Young exit the vehicle,
in shock at the scene before them. The flowers appear to be
grimacing and groaning, twisting and turning. They look at
each other, then over to Edward Jr. and Officer McMillen.

                       OFFICER FULLER
McMillen! What happened?

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
You wouldn't believe it.

77.

A couple of fire engines roll up. Firefighters get out,
ready to put out the flames.

                       LT. YOUNG
      (To the
       firefighters)
Let it burn! We have an officer
down over here.

The firefighter/medics look at each other, and rush toward
the house.

                       LT. YOUNG
Where's your father?

Edward motions over near the vehicles. His charred carcass
entwined in the flower is visible.

                       EDWARD JR.
There were others inside. But it
was too late. They got to them. I
had no other choice.

                       LT. YOUNG
You know, I heard the stories
about this place for years.
Thought it was just crazy
folklore. Stories. But things
just didn't add up. Truth be
told, I was beginning to suspect
your father was some kind of
serial killer. This never crossed
my mind.

                       CONNOR
I seen it. I wouldn't have
believed it either, but I seen
what they could do. I watched
Mister Jameson feed the field. I
saw those things eat people and
animals.

                       OFFICER FULLER
How could this be?

                       OFFICER MCMILLEN
If I didn't almost become
sunflower fertilizer...

The medics load Officer McMillen into the back of the
ambulance.

78.

                       OFFICER #3 (OC)
Lieutenant! You better come back
here quick!

Lt. Young, Officer Fuller, Connor and Edward Jr. run toward
the rear of the house. Officer #3 has located the trap
door. Flashing his light inside, they all see the
belongings of previous missing victims. Carl's vehicle is
also parked back there, covered up.

                       EDWARD JR.
Trophies.

                                         CUT TO

EXT. BURNING SUNFLOWER FIELD - CONTINUOUS

                       EDWARD JR. (vo)
Nobody ever believed me. I'd been
saying it for years. Putting up
with the taunts. But that day,
they finally did. Sometimes it
takes seeing something with your
own eyes to believe. And even
then, you try to convince yourself
that your eyes deceive you. I
don't know where they came from,
or why they never harmed my family
until now. Truth be told, I don't
want to know.

                                         CUT TO

EXT. EMPTY FIELD - EIGHT MONTHS LATER - DAY

A young couple hiking through the brush come upon a few
stalks of wild growing sunflowers. The girl smiles, running
up to it. She hands her phone to her companion.

                       GIRL HIKER
Take my picture with it! Have you
ever seen anything so tall and
beautiful?

                       BOY HIKER
Besides you?

                       GIRL HIKER
      (laughing)
Stop!

79.

She wraps a leg around the stalk, hugging the top with her
arms. He's about to take a picture, when he notices it
appear to move.

                       BOY HIKER
That's weird.

                       GIRL HIKER
What?

THE FACE OF THE FLOWER BENDS DOWN, DEVOURING THE GIRL.

FADE OUT.
