Glory has a dream of becoming an innkeeper. When her dream comes true, the rest of the family tries to go along with it. It is fun for Glory but very hard on her family.

FADE IN:

EXT. DRIVEWAY COUNTRY INN - DAY

Montage, Credits over. We see a couple walking up to a
few country inns that they are thinking of buying. They
shrug their shoulders and go on to the next one.

THE CAMERA moves up the driveway, bordered with luscious
English-style flower gardens. A turn of the century inn
reveals itself. Originally an old summer house for a rich
family, the house is shingled, painted a deep red and
trimmed in white. On the inviting front porch, two dogs
are sleeping. Guests sit in white wooden chairs on the
lawn, other guests are playing tennis on the clay court.
Birds are singing and we feel the peace and tranquility of a
time gone by.

EXT. INN - DAY

A couple in their forties are looking around the inn
property.

GLORY
(to Otto)
My dream come true.

OTTO
This looks like a lot of work.

GLORY
You wanted to do something
together.

OTTO
WEll......I'm not sure I meant
this.

GLORY
I asked you if you wanted to do
this.

OTTO
I know but I'm not sure this is
realistic.

INT. COUNTRY INN - DAY

GLORY
(Voice over))
My dream has come true.

Camera moves slowly into the inn. Guests sit on the screen
porch, sipping cocktails, enjoying the spectacular views of
the White Mountains. There are different conversations.
Classical music plays softly.

INT. DINING ROOM - DAY

House keepers buzz round the dining room, cleaning, setting
up tables for dinner. The tables are elegant, with crystal,
flowers and candles.

INT. KITCHEN - DAY

We move into the kitchen. It is the perfect country
kitchen. Pots, pans, fresh spices hang from the beams.
Desserts and home-baked bread sit on the table, in the
center of the kitchen, fresh from the oven. A man is
cooking dinner. He is having fun, laughing and talking with
his three daughters who are also at work in the kitchen,
doing various jobs.

INT. UPSTAIRS - DAY

Camera moves up the stairs, down the hall, into a guest
room. The room is beautifully decorated, with antiques, oak
furniture. There is a lush flowery comforter, a soft rose
carpet, fluffy towels in the bathroom and a comfortable
chair by the fireplace. A crystal bottle of sherry sits on
a table with two glasses.

INT. BATHROOM - DAY

Bedroom-Late afternoon
A large bathroom with a huge deep footed bathtub. Plants
hang from the ceiling. Lights reflect on Crystals and
glowing candles. New age music plays softly and on the wall
above the bathtub are written sayins of great spiritual
Knowledge. The camera reveals Glory. She is a
full-bodied, earth mother type of woman. She looks like
someone you'd want to take care of you on your vacation. She
is relaxed and happy, enjoying a bubble bath, reading a
book.

INT. HALL - DAY

Glory peeks out of her bathroom door to see if the coast is
clear. Her bathroom is located beneath the stair case and
opens into the foyer where the front entrance is located.
(Sometimes she unexpectedly meets an arriving guest, dressed
inappropriately in a towel. Today she is wearing a Mu-mu
type dress. Her hair is wet. The coast is clear, she starts
up the stairs and runs down the hall to her room.

INT. BEDROOM - DAY

LATE AFTERNOON

Glory stops and looks out the window, taking in the
breathtaking view. She looks down at her two dogs who follow
her everywhere.

GLORY
Ollie and Timber, I wish you could
enjoy the view like I do. Come on
up on the bed and see for
yourselves. I'm sure you are both
old wisemen, keeping watch over
me. I've heard dogs don't see in
color. Is that true?

Glory sits down to do her makeup and dry her hair.

There is a knock at the door.

LULU
(Waitress)
The dining room is full tonight.
Right Glory?

GLORY
Yes, I wrote it all down and
double checked it. Did you look at
the book?

GLORY
Yes, I wrote that all down and
double checked it.

LULU
Oh, sorry, I forgot to look.

Glory sits back down. A moment later there is another knock
at the door.

MARIE
(Guest)
Oh, excuse me, I didn't realize
you were still getting ready. I'll
talk with you later.

GLORY
Fine.

Glory peeks out the door, sees her Do not Disturb sign has
dropped to the floor. She hangs it up, locks the door, and
sits on the bed, like a yoga. She lights incense and begins
to meditate.

GLORY
(Voice over))
Just because you create something,
you don't always get it all right.
You have to work at it.

INT. DOOR OPEN TO HALL - DAY

INT. BAR (BEHIND THE KITCHEN) - NIGHT

Glory is dressed now. She stops, looks around the bar, pours
herself a cup of coffee and walks into the kitchen.

GLORY
Hi Otto

Otto is Glory's husband, a large warm funny man, from West
Virginia. He is the cook, has learned his skills from
Glory. Although a great cook he has little confidence in
himself. He adores Glory. Glory leans over and gives him a
kiss.

OTTO
I hopt this turns out all right,
Glory. I wish you wouldn't spring
new recipes on me, like this.

GLORY
(laughing)
Otto, it's so simple and one of
the guests requested this. You
know you can do it. By now you are
a far better cook than I am.

Glory gets a spoon and tastes the soup.

GLORY
Yum. It tastes as good as it
smells.

Glory move to the back of the kitchen where Teresa, her
daughter is slicing the fresh bread. Theresa is beautiful,
voluptuous, a girl of eighteen. She is an artist in the
kitchen Glory takes a piece and slathers it with butter.

            THERESA
      (acting upset, but
       joking)
Mom, leave some for dinner. It's
a new recipe. Do you like it?

GLORY
(mouth full)
Sure do.

Nancy walks in with an armload of flowers and takes others
out of the walk-in fridge. She is tall and slim. She talks,
walks and thinks quickly. She is the organizer of the
family.

GLORY
(proud of herself)
Don't you just love being able to
pick the flowers out of our
garden. I think I planted the
right ones.

NANCY
Yes and they last much longer when
I put them in the fridge during
the day.

GLORY
Great Idea.

Gloria goes back into the bar, sets it up. The guests begin
to come downstairs for dinner, ready for cocktails. Gloria
talks with them as she mixes drinks.

GLORY
(voice over)
It looks like the good life. It
is.

INT. KITCHEN - DAY

It is the end of the first season. Glory and Otto are
sitting at the kitchen table.

            GLORY
      (feeling really
       happy)
Well, we made it through our fist
season. How do you feel? Or
should I ask?

            OTTO
      (rather down in
       the dumps)
I think the guy who sold us the
inn, lied to us. He told us we had
a built-in business. Butthat
wasn't the truth. It's only busy
part of the year.

GLORY
If you think about it, there isn't
much to do between seasons. Summer
and winter are when people want to
come. We should have realized
that. He seemed to do all right.

OTTO
He told us we'd live like rich
people, with the beautiful house,
the clay tennis court. Ha! Who
has time for any of that. I've
never worked so hard in my life
for so little.

GLORY
(in defense)
People like us. They all say
we're doing a good job. They love
yuor cooking. It says on their
response cards that they love
vacationing here.

            OTTO
      (a little more
       sympathetic to
       Glory)
I guess we had a lot of nerve
taking on something we never had
done before. But it hasn't worked
out at all like we planned. Do
            (MORE)

OTTO (cont'd)
you remember that we came here to
spend time together, to walk in
the woods, to have time to smell
the flowers?

GLORY
We have sone some of that. At
least at first.

OTTO
I love you, I don't want to always
have to share you. Besides it was
supposed to be a change from our
jobs in Hollywood. We never saw
each other even when we worked on
the same set. You'd be doing the
hairdressing and I'd be lighting
the set. We never saw each other
except for a little while at
night. It's still out of control.

we are too busy again. We still
fall into bed exhausted.

            GLORY
      (Wanting to make
       peace)
You're right. Remember when we
first arrived, how optomistic you
were. We never really thought
about what we were getting into.

OTTO
I'm not sure you are aware yet.
You are such a Pollyanna at times.
You enjoy eveything.

GLORY
What do you mean? What are you
trying to say, Otto?

GLORY
First of all, look at the books.
We've lost $49,000 this first
year. We definitly can't go on
like this. What do you have to say
about that, Glory?

GLORY
(smiling)
I think we should throw a party to
celebrate that we didn't lose
$50,000.00

            OTTO
      (laughs and gives
       Glory a big hug)
You are reminding me of all the
reasons I love you so much and
follow you anywhere, even if you
are a little crazy. I guess the
world needs some madness like
yours at times.

GLORY
Lets think about the fun parts of
this first year, instead of all
the problems. Think of it as
going to college. That would have
cost a lot. We did our learning on
the job.

INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

MONTAGE OF WHEN THEY FIRST ARRIVE AT THE INN

Living room is bare, not much furniture. Glory and Otto are
planning a romantic evening.

GLORY
Our dream has come true. Did you
ever imagine we would actually be
innkeepers?

Otto lights the fire while glory sets out the champagne.
They each take a glass of the bubbly. Otto leans over to
kiss Glory. Suddenly they begin to choke, they run to open
the door to the porch.

OTTO
(looking subdued)
Guess I forgot to open the flue.

They sit on the porch and drink their champagne, while the
smoke clears out of the living room.

OTTO
(voice over)
I remember us buying, buying.

They buy a snow-blower.
The oven in the kitchen blows up They go to buy a new
commercial stove.
They wash the curtains, which dissolve and so they buy new
curtains.
Guests complain about twin beds so they invest in double
beds and king size beds.
They buy wood stoves, the price of oil has doubled.
Their car slides on the icy road. They invest in a Jeep
truck. They put their groceries in the back of the truck
and find them frozen when they get home to the inn. So Glory
shops alone with the groceries piled in the front seat,
falling on her when she turns a corner.
They buy ice in town, fifteen minutes away. It begins to
melt before Glory gets home. They buy an icemaker.

GLORY
(voice over)
Mostly I remember the good times,
but do you remember me telling you
about the worst day of my life?

EXT. FRONT PORCH - DAY

Glory greets some old guest of the former innkeepers. She
is trying to make a good impression

            GLORY
      (reaches out to
       shake hands)
Hello. How are you? I'm so glad
you've come.

Mr. and Mrs Schmidt and son Hans are a very German family.
They are formal, not warm or friendly.

MR AND MRS SCHMIDT
(Formally)
How do you do?

The family remains quiet and unsmiling.

INT. GUEST ROOM - DAY

            GLORY
      (trying hard to
       charm)
These are our nicest rooms, we
just finished redecorating them.

            MRS SCHMIDT
      (sniffs down her
       nose)
I liked them the way they were,
when we were here before.

EXT. PORCH - DAY

Glory, trying to be polite, goes out to the porch to talk to
the Schmidts.

GLORY
Isn't it nice that Max who used to
own the inn is so happy now. He
lives in Swetzerland. I think it
is so romantic that he was able to
marry his sweetheart of
fifty-three years ago. Don't you?

            MRS SCHMIDT
      (snifing up her
       nose again)
I think he remarried too soon
after his first wife died. It is
shameful.

She stands up and walks off, huffily.

INT. DINING ROOM - NIGHT

Theresa shows the Schmidts to their table, the best table in
the dining room.

MRS SCHMIDT
(Haughtily)
Oh, this isn't our table. We
always sat at the one over there.
We can't sit anywhere else.

Teresa moves things around and gives them "their" table.
Glory watches from the door. She is getting depressed. She
cannot do anything to please these people.

INT. KITCHEN - NIGHT

Glory is cooking Beef Stroganoff. It looks delicious as she
dishes it out. The waitress delivers it to the dining room
A minute later Mr Schmidt appears at the kitchen door with a
plate in hand.

            MR SCHMIDT
      (shoves a plate in
       Glory's face)
Look at this!

Glory looks at the plate. A large,shiny, black buy sits on
top of the stroganoff. She is shocked and speechless.

MR SCHMIDT
(deadly)
We can't possibly eat here.

            GLORY
      (totally
       embarrassed)
Of course not. That's never
happened before. How is it
possible I didn't see that when I
served your plate. Our kitchen is
known to be very clean

GLORY
(looking closer)
Actually, it doesn't look cooked.

Mr Schmidt walks away.

Glory serves more meals, and looks carefully to see if there
are any other bugs. She is beginning to wonder if she has
been set up and her intuition is proving right, when the
whole Schmidt family shows up with all their luggage at the
kitchen door.

MR SCHMIDT
Look. We can't stay here after
what has happened. And by the way,
I expect my deposit back.

By this time Glory is really upset. She has lost the income
from the two best rooms at the inn for the two coming weeks.
She is also embarrassed and willing to do anything to get
these people out of her life. She goes to her office,
writes a check and hands it to them.

GLORY
Here's the check. I'm sorry you
weren't able to be happy here.
Goodbye.

Glory walks back into the kitchen an mutters under her
breath. She is beginning to realize she has been set up.
Nothing would have made them happy though. Suddenly she
remembers a movie she saw years before.

            GLORY
      (To nobody and
       anybody in the
       kitchen)
I knew it. I saw that happen in a
Julie Andrews movie. She had the
bug in her purse. She couldn't
pay. I bet they found it on the
windowsill. What creeps.

INT. BACK TO KITCHEN GLORY AND OTTO REMEMBERING - DAY

Glory and Otto are sitting at the kitchen table

GLORY
(rolling her eyes)
What a terrible experince. I
wanted to kill those people.

OTTO
(sympathetic)
Can't blame you. I know I left
you alone while I went off to work
to get money for our inn payments,
but I wouldn't have ever wanted
that to happen to you.

GLORY
Okay, I know that. Now tell me
what was your worst expeience?

EXT. COLD-SNOWY-ICY DAY - DAY

Otto is up on the barn roof with a rope tied around his
waist. It is winter and the roof is icy. He is trying to
get the snow off the metal roof. As he struggles to keep
his balance, he falls and slips over the side of the roof
and is dangling there helpless.

Otto's point of view.
The inn crew is in the kitchen, laughing, all warm and cosy.
Nobody looks out to see him dangling, yelling for help. He
almost passes out, but works his way back up to the roof.

OTTO
I really hated all of you at that
moment.

GLORY
(both laughing)
I can't blame you.

OTTO
I guess it's not as bad as it
seems, but what are we going to do
for money. It doesn't seem to be
coming in fast enough. I have
always paid my bills as soon as
they arrive. Now we can't and that
really frightens me. The money
just seems to disappear. I don't
like being in this position.

OTTO
I don't like it. Besides we don't
have time to relax. It's all
work, all you think about. I
thought owning your own business
was supposed to make life easier.
Ha!

GLORY
If it would make you feel better,
I'll pay the bills. I know I's
sort of dyslexic, and not great
with moeny, but I need to learn.
I know how yu feel, but in the
business world we pay our bills
differently, hold on to the cash
and pay at the last minute and
keep the cash flow.

INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

Glory sits on the couch by the fire. Beside her is a pile of
books. She is getting ideas for their inn. Otto walks in.

GLORY
Otto, look at these books, Maybe
we can get our inn into one of
them. I'm gonna write to all
these authors and invite them to
come here and put us in their
books. It will bring more people.

14.

INT. INN - DAY

Glory opens a letter from one of the travel writers.

GLORY
(excitedly)
Liz Squires is coming! We are
going to be in an Inn Book.

Montage:
The whole inn crew is at work.
Otto and Glory rush around the inn.
They paint the best rooms,
They drive to Portland and buy lovely quilts.
Otto studies his cookbooks.

INT. DINING ROOM - NIGHT

Liz Squires arrives with her entourage. Her husband Bob
and another couple. Liz is a sophisticated woman, looks
severe and she scares Otto. Actually she is very nice and
quite kind. Glory understands that, but Otto is nervous.

The dining room is full, Liz and her party are enjoying a
bottle of wine. Glory joins them at dinner and has a great
time.

LIZ
This is the best veal i've had in
so long. I love this place. I wish
we could stay here and rest for a
while. I have so many more places
to see.

Otto comes into the dining room and joins them.

OTTO
Are you sure?

BOB
That was great Otto.

GLORY
Relax Otto. Have a glass of wine.
We go to all sorts of inns, week
after week. This place is really
wonderful. Have fun, relax.
that's what innkeeping is all
about.

Otto visibly relaxes.

15.

INT. MONTAGE - DAY

Inn going through a general face lift.
Driveway being tarred.
New washer and dryer are delivered.
Otto mows lawns.
Otto paints the trim.
Otto fixes pipes.
Otto digs up septic system.
He is not having any fun.

In contrast we see Glory coming home in the car. Her
lisence reads Glory B.
She gets out of the car, her arms full of boxes and bags of
linens, lots of things for the inn.
Glory woalpapers a guest room. She sings to herself. The
phone rings, she climps down off the ladder, answers the
phone and takes a reservation, as the wall paper slides down
the wall.
Glory works in the garden, talks to flowers.
The dogs look at her strangly.

Otto studies the book, shakes his head.

INT. OFFICE - DAY

OTTO
Now that we have spent all this
money, we don't even have any
reservations or deposits until
summer. That is months away.

            GLORY
      (in her own
       defense)
But the summer deposits are
begining to come in now.

OTTO
(Angrily)
Yeah! Little by little.

INT. KITCHEN/BAR - DAY

Otto pours himself a stiff drink of Scotch.

EXT. YARD-HOT SUMMER DAY - DAY

Black flies (a small biting gnat, the scourge of the spring)

have invaded the area. The flies make it almost impossible
to work outside. Otto and Glory work in the garden. They
both wear a hat, made of netting that covers their faces.
Otto stands up and throws his hat down.

OTTO
(very angry)
This is stupid. The scotch I
drink normally would run off
anything. The mosquitoes never
bite me. These dumb flies don't
understand that.

            GLORY
      (wanting to calm
       him)
I talked with some locals. They
said this only happens each day
from Mother's Day to Fathers Day.
The key is to get outdoors work
done early. Besides these flies
only exist in unpolluted areas.
Next year we will do all the
outdoors things early..

OTTO
Yeah! Great! If there is a next
year.

INT. BEDROOM - DAY

Otto gets dressed and puts on a tee shirt that reads
BLACK FLIES SUCK

INT. VILLAGE STORE - DAY

The little village store is the heart of the village. People
get their mail here, the newspapers, pick up groceries. They
have breakfast and lunch at the counter. Robin runs the
store and she knows everything that goes on in town and
everyone that lives in the town.

Glory looks rather tired this morning. Her shoulders droop.

ROBIN
What you need is ome fun. You have
been working so hard ever since
you arrived.

GLORY
I guess you're right. We haven't
stopped.

ROBIN
Why don't you come to a pig
shower. Johnny sows are about to
give birth. It's all for fun.
Have you met Johnny yet?

GLORY
Not yet, but it seems I'm about
to.

INT. BARN AT JOHNNY'S INN - DAY

Everyone is gathered in the barn at Johnny's Inn. Robin
shows Glory and Otto around.

ROBIN
This is an old working farm. Way
back in 1946 Johnny's folks turned
it into an inn. It's the most
successful inn in the valley.
Johnny can be a big help to you.
He is always looking for a place
to send people, when he is full.

OTTO
We can use that kind of help.

Johnny appears. He is tall, blond, with curly hair and
well-built, from doing hard work. He has a full beard and
a smile that makes him irresistible to women. Men like him
too. Robin introduces him to Glory and Otto. Otto is
immediately jealous of Johnny, because of his easy demeanor.
He takes life as it comes and always appears happy and
carefree.

Glory smiles at Johnny. He reaches out to shake her hand.
Otto stands by quietly as men do at times.

GLORY
So glad to meet you. A fellow
innkeeper. I love pigs. This is
so much fun.

Johnny smiles.

The barn is full of people sitting on hay bales. The big
stalls are decorated with pink and blue streamers. The pigs
are asleep in the stalls on nice clean hay, snoring
contentedly. There are tubs of iced bear and wine and a
table full of good country food. Glory's dogs Ollie and

Timber are getting acquainted with everyone. Johnny is
surprised. He begins to open his presents.
The first present is a 20 by 4 inch board painted pink.
There are ten nipples nailed to it.

JOHNNY
What's this?

ROBIN
Looks like a pig pacifier to me.

johnny opens one after another funny pig gifts. Everyone
laughs, enjoys the food and drink. These hard working
people needed a party, before the busy season begins. It
helps relieve the tension which will come with the busy
summer ahead.

INT. OUTSIDE THE INN - DAY

A few weeks after the pig shower

GLORY
Otto, I'm going over to Johnny's
to see the new baby pigs. Do you
want to come?

OTTO
No! I don't have time for that.

INT. JOHNNYS INN - DAY

Glory drives up to Johnny's Inn. Here point of view.Horses,
cows, dogs, cats, peacocks, wander around. Lots of guests
enjoying the farm.

GLORY
(To herself)
I hope our place is this busy one
day.

Glory hears a voice.

JOHNNY
Oh good, I need help.

Johnny appears in his usual outfit. His jeans are well
worn, tight and dirty. His shirt is ragged, his hair
mussed. He happens to look great.

JOHNNY
Hi, Glory. Do you happen to have a
baby bottle at the inn.One little
pig isn't doing very well. I think
her mother rolled over on her.

GLORY
I think one of the guests left a
bottle. I'll go home and get it.

JOHNNY
Wait!

Johnny comes out of the stall and hands Glory a very little,
very quiet piglet.

JOHNNY
I know you love pigs, I'll bet you
can nurse her back to health
better than anyone I know.I really
don't have the time now. It's too
busy.

Once Johnny smiles at her, Glory is won over and off she
goes home with the little piglet wrapped in a blanket.

EXT. INN - DAY

Glory drives up to the inn. She is met by Timber and Ollie.
They come up to the car, as usual to greet her. They see the
little piglet wrapped in the blanket. They sniff and lick it
and wonder why this little dog smells so different. Glory
carries it into the house and makes a basket into a bed.

INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT

Glory holds the piglet like a baby. She is feeding it with
the bottle. When she finishes, she places the piglet to
sleep, right beside her pillow, so she can hear it breathe.

OTTO
I can't believe what I'm seeing.
I've always heard guys saying they
slept with a pig, but I never
thought I'd really do it.

20.

INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

The family is sitting around, watching the piglet. Laughing.

            ANDIE
      (the youngest
       daughter, still
       goes to high
       school)
Mom, I think she is gonna make it,
don't you?

GLORY
Yep. Thanks Heavens.

OTTO
Then I think it's time we gave her
a name.

THERESA
How about Alice?

Everyone shakes their heads no!

NANCY
How about Miss Piggy?

OTTO
No! I hate Miss Piggy, she's so
Hollywood.

ANDIE
How about Gracie. She is really
graceful. Listen to her walk on
the bare floor. It sounds like she
is wearing high heels.

Everyone nods in agreement. Gracie, sits at Glory's feet,
loving all the attention. She tries to move close to the
dogs, she always wants to cuddle with them, but they move
away.

OTTO
Okay, Gracie she is. Our newest
addition to our crazy family,
thanks to your mom.

EXT. MONTAGE - DAY

Gracie following the dogs, always trying to nap beside them.
Gracie on walks in woods with dogs, they try t lose her, but

she shows up at home before they arrive.
Gracie sits by the fire with guests.
Guests arrive and ask what breeed of dog Gracie is.
Gracie helps to dig the flower beds.
Gracie is larger, when a tough dog arrives. The dog is used
to other dogs cowering when he looks at them. Gracie pays no
atention. When he begins to chase Ollie and Timbe, Gracie
rams him. Ollie and Timber like Gracie very much after
that.
In preparation for a wedding at the inn, all the dogs go to
the groomer. Gracie feels left behind, but she smells good
and doesn't need washing. She leaves a mess in the living
room to show her feelings.

INT. LIVING ROOM - DAY

GLORY
Oh Gracie, I cn't believe you did
this. Hew! Shame on you. I guess
you'll have to move outside now.
I'm sorry, I never told you you
weren't a dog. I guess I hurt your
feelings, but the time has come.
You must move outdoors.

EXT. FRONT PORCH - DAY

Gracie is lying on the porch, under a bench. She looks sad,
lying on a patchwork quilt. She doesn't understand.

EXT. OUTSIDE-OVERLOOKING THE MOUNTAINS. - DAY

A wedding is taking place. Guests are dressed in beautiful
clothes. Some are sitting on the grass. One old grandma is
in a wheelchair up front. The bride and groom are taking
their vows. We see the dogs and Gracie sitting quietly.
Suddenly something gets their attention and sets them of.
All three begin to run, and as they do, they head toward the
bride and groom, almost toppling them off their feet.
Glory and Otto watch, shaking their heads. Everyone begins
to laugh, after all this is a country wedding.

INT. OFFICE - DAY

Yeah, we went from five to ten.

GLORY
They told us not to be in too much
of a hurry. It takes years to
build a successful business. I'm
sure we are going to be a success.

OTTO
WE may not be able to last a few
years at the rate we are going.

INT. LIVING ROON - NIGHT

Otto and Glory sit in the kitchen talking to Ruth and Gary,
while Gary cooks dinner for them. They are guests and Gary
is a big warm Italian man who loves to cook. Ruth is a
relaxed woman who adores Gary.

GARY
We have something to ask you. This
is our favorite place and we want
to get married here.

RUTH
Remember when we first came her
and Gary spent all his time in the
kitchen, It was like home. We
loved finding friends like you.

GLORY
We'd love to have your wedding
here.

GARY
Thanks. We want to com up here
and get married, all alone. No
relatives. I want you to call your
friends, the girls can invite
their friends and I'll cook for
everyone.

OTTO
Sounds like a winner to me.

INT. DINING ROOM - DAY

The Justice of Peace arrives. There are lots of the girls
friends milling around. It is the quiet season so there are
no guests. A big spread is on the table. Gary has prepared
everything. Johnny and his girlfriend Alana are ther. Alana
is tuning her violin and is preparing to sing at the
wedding. Alana is a tall, dark, sexy-looking woman. A good
match for Johnny. She sings professionally and is often on
the road.
Ruth enters the room. She looks beautiful. Gary looks at her
full of love. The violin sings, the Justice of Peace is a
little old man.
The ceremony is quick and everyone dives into the food and
champagne.

            GARY
      (making a
       confession)
Otto, you know, for a few minutes,
while I was cooking,I got the
jitters, but then I remembered how
much fun you and Glory have and I
knew I wanted to be married--and
have lots of kids.

RUTH
I'm so happy. He's the only man I
ever really loved. I feel so
lucky. I hope we have a life full
of adventure like you Glory and
Otto.

JOHNNY
(giving a toast)
Here's to a wonderful wedding day.
Thanks to Gary and Ruth. One if
thse days it might happen to me.

            ALANA
      (looking at them
       doubtfully)
Hmm.

EXT. HOT SUMMER NIGHT - NIGHT

Otto and Glory are at the lake swimming with some guests.

GLORY
I feel so lucky to do this. I
always felt deprived growing up in
Los Angeles.

OTTO
At times like this I feel the same
way.

INT. SCREEN PORCH - DAY

A reporter interviews Glory and Otto for the local paper.

            REPORTER
      (obviously
       expecting a happy
       answer)
Tell me now, what's it like being
an innkeeper? How does it compare
to your former life.

GLORY
I love it. It's been a wonderful
change.

OTTO
(cuts in quickly)
It's a lot of work. What I used to
do was much easier. I was a
lighting director for movies in
Hollywood. I only worked fourteen
hours a day then. Most of the
time I pointed and people did what
I told them to do. Now I work
twenty hours and I have to do
everything myself. The pay in
Hollywood was much better and this
being is business for myself is
for the birds.

EXT. SCREEN PORCH - DAY

End of first fall season. Otto and Glory are cleaning up
from the last wedding of the season. The fall colors spread
out before them. The inn had finally been full for a few
weeks.
They sit down in the comfortable chairs and open some of the
champagne left over from the wedding. They open a few in
fact.

GLORY
It feels so good to sit down for a
while and know nobody is coming
tonight, doesn't it?

OTTO
(pretty happy now)
You are right about that.

GLORY
(a bit tipsy now.)
What do you envision our life to
be like. What's your goal for our
future?

OTTO
(a bit tipsy too)
I see us so successful that out
there on the lawn are two
Clydesdale's horses romping about.
There is also someone to look
after them. We have a fantastic
chef so I don't have to cook and a
talented handyman. All I have to
do is sit on the porch, or by the
fire and read and relax when I
want to. What about you?

GLORY
I see the inn eventually being run
by our kids and then their kids,
I'd love it to be a family
business, like Johnny's. I see
this as my destiny, being an
innkeeper until I leave the earth.
I see myself as an old lady
puttering around, talking to the
guests, working in the garden. I'd
love that. I hope our wishes come
true.

            OTTO
      (Looks at Glory as
       if she is crazy)
Are you sure you want to work that
hard, Glory? I'm not sure we will
be able to handle all this in a
few years.

GLORY
It's so great with all of us able
to live here, near each other.

apart. Living in the country is so
perfect. No keys, trusting
people, I just don't know how I'd
ever go back to city living.

OTTO
Glory, when are you ever going to
be realistic?

GLORY
I am being realistic. When I'm
happy, that means that life is

OTTO
(glumly)
Maybe for you.

EXT. UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAMPSHIRE - DAY

Glory and Andie look for the dorm where Andie will stay
while she is at college. Glory kisses her goodbye and looks
sad.

ANDIE
(reassuring)
Mom, I'm still going to come home
some weekends. I want to work on
vacations.

GLORY
I know tht. I am going to miss you
though. I'm so happy you can do
this. I love you , call me if you
need anything.

INT. KITCHEN - DAY

Theresa has become the star baker,written about in the
papers. She is on the phone. She is talking to a friend on
the phone.

THERESA
(sounds frustrated)
You're leaving for California. I
wish I could go to. I feel so tied
down here, I'm beginning to hate
being here. I feel they need me
though and I can't let them down.

Glory wanders into the kitchen and overhears Teresa's
conversation.

GLORY
Teresa, I think it's time we had a
talk. I heard you. You don't
really seem happy any more.

THERESA
(starting to cry)
Mom, I feel so left out. I
graduated from high school, came
here and now all I do is cook and
wait tables. But I know you need
me here.

GLORY
You mean you feel you have to stay
here because of me?

THERESA
(defensively)
If you want me to be honest, I
will be. Yes Mom I do stay
because of you and Otto.

            GLORY
      (near tears
       herself)
Oh, forgive me. I didn't realize
you were so unhappy. I guess I was
too busy. You can take off for
California with your friends.

THERESA
Oh Mom, thanks. I didn't know how
to ask you. You are so happy here
and want us all to feel the same.
Maybe I'm nto ready to settle down
yet.

GLORY
You know, this is my dream. You
have your own life to live and our
own dreams will come.

They hug and kiss.

EXT. CAR - DAY

Glory and Robin are driving up through the notch to
Whitefield.

GLORY
How did you find out abut this
woman? I've never been to a a
spiritualist before.

ROBIN
A friend of mine took me to see
Paula, the first time. She was so
amazing and told me things that
would happen and they did. She
told me lots of wonderful things
about my life and my past lives.

INT. PAULA'S HOUSE - DAY

Paula's house is in the forest,near a lake. It is a little
log cabin. Dried flowers decorate the doors, flowers galore
and it feels very spiritual. Paula invites them inside.
Paula is a tall warm woman. She speaks softly, as if
listening to the spirits.

Candles burn, the house is full of plants, beautiful
paintings, warm colors, crystals.

PAULA
Glory, you have all these little
beings that surround you, like a
garden at your feet. They are like
little essences of color, they
shimmer. They have come to learn
from you. They will travel with
you this lifetime, helping you to
learn too.

GLORY
(delighted)
How wonderful. Do you think Otto
has some too?

PAULA
I don't think he does, but your
little ones, learn from him by
being with you. He sort of
frightens them, sometimes.

GLORY
What else is going on in my life?

PAULA
It looks as if there will be some
struggle and then things will be
easier financially. You have lots

these little beings will be there
to help you. You are lucky to have

GLORY
I have a hunch, I'm gonna need a

INT. INTERIOR PAULA'S HOUSE - DAY

INT. GARDEN SPRING - DAY

Glory is talking to Virginia, a true flower child. She has a
twin sister Shirley. They are doing the flower gardens
which are prizewinning English type gardens that line the
driveway.

GLORY
Virginia, this is amazing. It is
so beautiful. I never could have
done this. I used to plant a lot
of things than the inn would get
so busy that the weeds would
overtake the flowers.

VIRGINIA
It's a real privilege to be
working here. I love working in
the garden, looking at the
mountains. It's a very special
place. The flowers all tell me
they like being here too.

GLORY
They say you should talk to the
flowers and they'll be happy. You
must be saying wonderful things to
them. They look so happy.

INT. KITCHEN - DAY

A few months later Darlene a new employee, is working with
Glory in the kitchen.Darlene is a country woman. She has
simple tastes, gives honest answers and works hard as can be
and fast.

GLORY
You know Darlene, I really miss
Nancy. I wish she had liked it
here.

DARLENE
How does she like being back in
California?

GLORY
I'm afraid she is a California
beach girl at heart. She never
did like the cold weather.

DARLENE
It's mighty quiet around here now.

GLORY
I'm beginning to wonder when one
of the girls will decide to get
married. I'm ready to be a granny.

            DARLENE
      (kneading the
       bread all this
       time.)
Yep, that's what life is all
about. The family is what makes it
all worthwhile.

At that very moment the phone rings.

GLORY
Hello. This is the...oh it's you
Nanc;y. (To Darlene) It's Nancy
calling from California.

NANCY
(calmly)
Mom, sit down. I've got a
surprise for you.

GLORY
What?

NANCY
Just a minute Mom. I'm pregnant.

GLORY
You're gonna have a baby, how
wonderful! When? Oh I can't
believe it. Darlene and I were
just talking and I said I wanted

to be a granny. It's like I
ordered a granchild and here it
comes. Oh! Wow! I'm so happy!

NANCY
Trouble is, I don't want to marry
the father. We just don't get
along.

GLORY
That's okay. Come on home. We
could even have the baby at the
inn with a midwife if you like.
Just like the good old days. I'll
bet nobody was ever born here
before.

NANCY
I'd like that.

EXT. INN ENTRANCE - DAY

Sign on the front porch says Closed. The trees are bare,
they haven't blossomed yet. It is May.

INT. BEDROOM UPSTAIRS IN THE INN - DAY

Sun streams through the bedroom window. Nancy is lying on
the bed surrounded by her family and midwives. A baby has
jut been born. The midwife hands the baby to Nancy.

NANCY
It's a boy!Oh how wonderful. With
all the girls in our family, I
finally have a boy. I'm gonna call
him Otto.

Otto and glory have tears in their eyes as they watch Nancy
smile with all her heart.

NANCY
Hello Baby Otto. Or should you be
called Otto Two? I guess we'll
figure that out soon enough.

The midwife hands the baby to Glory and she gives him his
very first bath, holding him very carefully.

32.

INT. BEDROOM A LITTLE LATER - DAY

All the friends who had gathered downstairs, awaiting the
birth, come upstairs to meet little Otto. It is like the
olden days. Gorman, a bearded gruff man, comes bearing
champagne for everyone. Johnny comes up. He has cleaned up
for this occasion and Glory hands him the baby to hold.

GLORY
Johnny, you might as well get used
to this. Your and Alana's baby
will arrive soon and you need to
learn.

JOHNNY
Boy, is he small and delicate. My
hands seem too big. look at his
litle ones.

Ollie and Timer are in the room now too. They have been
waiting patiently outside the door. Glory holds the baby
down and introduces him to the dogs.

GORMAN
Here's a toast to the newest human
being on the earth, as far as we
know. Welcome Little Otto.

INT. BAR - NIGHT

Glory bar-tends, with Little Otto on her back in a backpack.
He admires the colors of the backlit liqour bottles.

INT. KITCHEN - NIGHT

Otto cooks with the baby on his back. He sets Little Otto
on the counter in an infant seat.

            OTTO
      (looks at Little
       Otto)
Well, pal, did I get that recipe
right. You know, you can't take
over me any too soon.

INT. LIVING ROOM AND BAR - NIGHT

Little Otto is now walking. He is very sociable. In the
evengs, he sits with the guests by the fireplace.

GLORY
Has anyone seen Little Otto?

NANCY
Come to think of it. No.

WAITRESS
The last time I saaw him he was on
the couch by the fire with the
guests.

Glory waks into the living room and quietly stands by the
door watching Little Otto. He is drinking from all the
left-over drinks on the table. The guests have gone into
dinner. He takes a drink, then sticks his finger into the
cheeseball, giving his finger to Ollie and Timber to lick.
He is very happy if a little tipsy.

            GLORY
      (as Otto looks up
       suddenly)
Otto, what are you up to? Now I
know why you've been so quiet in
the evening and sleep so well at
night.

INT. OFFICE/ROAD - DAY

Gracie has grown by leaps and bounds.

Glory answers the phone

TULIP AND IRIS
Glory, I think this must be your
big down here. She's eating our
tulips. Could you come rescue us?

GLORY
I'll be right there.

She hangs up the phone

GLORY
(to herself)
Oh darn, Otto's gone to town. I'll
have to call Johnny

Glory, Timber and Ollie are running out of the inn down the
hill.She pants and speaks to the dogs.

GLORY
Hey, guys, why did you let her run
off.

They arrive at the bottom of the hill, at the house but
Gracie is nowhere to be seen.

TULIP AND IRIS
(in unison)
We're so glad you came.We are
sorry to bother you, but she is so
big.

GLORY
(apologising)
I'm the one who is sorry. Are
your tulips going to be okay?

TULIP AND IRIS
Oh yes. I think she was frightened
off when we screamed. We haven't
had so much excitement in years.

EXT. ROAD DOWN THE HILL - DAY

            GLORY
      (talking to
       herself)
Wonder if because it's spring and
the mating season? Hmm

Glory finally spies Gracie. She calls to her, but Gracie
ignores her and the dogs as if they had never met before.

GLORY
(to the dogs)
She seems to have forgotten who we
are.

Gracie continues to stroll down the middle of the street,
pausing to walk toward a house. She frightens the dog tied
on a porch. She pushes her into another garden. As soon as
Glory catches up, Gracie moves forward. Ther is no way to
stop her.

GLORY
What am I going to do?

Here comes Johnny in his pickup truck.

JOHNNY
Hi Glory. Out walking your pig?

GLORY
Very funny. Thank heavens you're
here. I thought she might walk all
the way to town.

Johnny climbs out of the truck and reaches for a litle
switch branch from a tree. He calls to Gracie. She ignores
him, too. He returns to the truck and gets his shock
stick, he uses for his own cattle. Gracie gets the picture
after one shock. She squeals and heads back up the hill. It
is very steep but Johnny is able to head her off and keep
her going. Gracie is panting and totally exhausted by the
time they reach the top of the hill. She drops to the lawn,
and Glory drops beside her. Johnny and the dogs, still in
good shape, look on in laughter.

JOHNNY
I could use a beer.

GLORY
(still panting)
Go help yourself, I can't move.

Johnny returns, two beers in hand.

JOHNNY
Here Glory, this may help.

JOHNNY
I think you are going to have to
confine her.

GLORY
I feel badly, but I guess it has
to be done.

INT. OTTO IS BUILDING GRACIE A HOME - DAY

Gracie's new home is elegant for a pig pen. It is large,
has a couple of pillars in front and a little window. It is
insulated and has a moat around it with a little bridge. One
of the guests watches Otto as the finishing touches are
being applied.

            GUEST
      (obviously from
       New York)
You'll have to call this Gracie
Mansion. Maybe even Mayor Koch (or
present mayor) will come visit
here.

Later we see Otto nailing up a lovely sign that reads GRACIE
MANSION

INT. GARDEN - DAY

Glory is on her knees, working in the vegetable garden. A
guest walks up. He has something heavy in his hand.

GUEST
Look what I found in the woods. I
think it's an urn. It says Greta.
Who can that be? It was just
sitting on a boulder.

GLORY
(surprised)
Oh my gosh. That could be the
former owner's wife. She died
right here in the back room. She
loved this place. It's not fair
for her to have to be out back in
the woods, I think she should
reside in the flower garden.

EXT. GARDEN - DAY

VIRGINIA
Glory, what's this thing in the
garden?

GLORY
It's Greta's urn. You know the
last innkeeper. I think she's
still in there. She worked so hard

on the inn, I think she belongs

VIRGINIA
It gives me the creeps

From time to time we see Virginia, taking the urn, putting
it in the cellar, or back in the woods. Each time Glory
finds it missing she finds it and puts it back in the
garden.

INT. KITCHEN - DAY

DARLENE
You know, sometimes I have the
feeling there's a ghost around
here, ever since you brought that
inn back down here. I don't
believe the dead should be
disturbed.

GLORY
(excited)
Oh, do you think so? I'd love to
have a ghost. Besides every good
inn needs a ghost.

INT. LIVING ROOM - DAY

NANCY
(sternly)
Otto, the living room is a mess.
You must keep your toys in your
room so the guests don't trip over
them.

LITTLE OTTO
(innocently)
I didn't do it. Greta did.

INT. DINING ROOM - NIGHT

waitress discovers a broken glass.

            WAITRESS
      (remarks with a
       smile)
Guess Greta must have done this.
It's sure nice to have a ghost to
blame things on.

38.

EXT. INN, WINTER, SNOW HAS FALLEN - DAY

Johnny is plowing the driveway. He has a large snow plow on
the front of his truck.

            OTTO
      (pokes his head
       out the door)
Hey, Johnny, come on in for a hot
drink when you're done

INT. KITCHEN - DAY

Johnny, Otto and Glory sit at the table

            OTTO
      (over steaming
       mugs)
Like it? It's called Moose Milk.
Made of 150 rum and Eaglebrand
Condensed Milk. Sure is good when
you're cold.

Phone rings. Otto gets up to go answer it. Glory and Johnny
catch up on neighborhood gossip.

GLORY
Have you lived here all your life
Johnny?

JOHNNY
Yep, I came here when I was six
months old. I don't think I could
ever live anywhere else. Once I
tried to go away for a year, but
it didn't work. The city drives me
crazy.

GLORY
You're so lucky. You never had to
wonder where you would be happy. I
looked all over the world before I
found this place. I'm so happy
here but I don't think my family
is.

            JOHNNY
      (the country
       philosopher)
If you're happy, isn't that all
that is important. You can't make
anyone happy, Glory, unless they
want to be.

GLORY
I hear you.....but I feel sort of
guilty. How can I help them be
happy too?

JOHNNY
You can't, so just enjoy yourself.
Maybe in time they'll learn from
you. Have another Moose Milk.

GLORY
I wish Otto could learn to think
more like you do.

JOHNNY
Everyone's different, Glory. You
have to learn to allow for that
and accept. Everyone has a
different pace.

INT. BEDROOM EARLY MORNING - DAY

Otto and Glory are cozy under a down quilt. It is snowing
outside and the wind is blowing. Otto opens his eyes and
stretches.

OTTO
Thank heavens, only eighteen more
years to go.

GLORY
(stunned)
Oh God, I can't believe you just
said that. What do you mean?

OTTO
I don't know. I'm not happy here.
I'm always worried about the
bills, I never have time alone
with you. Busy, busy busy. It's
always the inn. And to be
truthful, I miss being looked up
to like I was in Hollywood. People
thought I was great at my job.

Nobody seems to appreciate me
here. I thought we came here so
we could be together. Now you
seem to appreciate Johnny's
company more than mine.

            GLORY
      (trying to calm
       him)
Do you think it's possible you're
going through the change of life
Otto? You know men do that after
forty.

OTTO
I don't know, I just know I'm not
happy.

GLORY
Remember before we came here, I
was reading about the male
menopause.It seems to happen
around forty and a man feels his
life is passing him by. He begins
to look for something new, like a
young chick, a new career, hot
car, all that stuff. We've both
seen it happen

OTTO
Maybe it's true.

GLORY
I hoped that if we changed our
lifestyle completely, you could
escape that. I didn't want you to
go through all those problems if
you didn't have to. I thought this
change would work, but obviously
it hasn't. I guess like with
women, nature has to take it's
natural course.

EXT. OTTO IS UNHAPPY - DAY

Looking grim, Otto shovels snow, piles wood, brings it
inside for the wood stove. He looks grimmer by the moment.

INT. OTTOS SMALL WORK SHOP - DAY

Otto sits in his directors chair that says gaffer on the
back. He gets up, adds a log to the pot belly stove, and
pours another stiff drink. He needs to get the nerve up to
tell Glory the whole truth about how he feels.

INT. KITCHEN - DAY

Glory is working alone in the kitchen. Otto walks in.

OTTO
(more than tipsy)
Glory, I have to talk to you.

GLORY
Sure, I have some time now. Lets
sit here at the table.

OTTO
Do you really like inn keeping?
All this work, no money, no time
to ourselves?

            GLORY
      (Needing to be
       honest but
       worried too)
Yes, Otto. I truly love being
here. I feel as if I finally
found my home place. It's where I
can express all the things I do
best. Our family is grown, but
now we have Little Otto to keep me
company, and Ollie and Timber go
free here. I even have my little
friends Paula told me about, eve
if you don't believe in them. I
always have someone to talk to.

OTTO
To be honest, I don't love being
an innkeeper. At times I hate it.
I wanted you to be happy. I love
you so much. I know you wanted me
to enjoy it as much as you do. I
know you wanted to get out of Los
Angeles. I understand that you
thought this would be good for the
whole family, but it doesn't work
for me.

Glory closes her eyes. She feels her world is coming to an
end. What can she say? Does she have to give up this place
she loves so much. Why can't everyone be happy here. They
are just beginning to grow the business and now Otto wants
to quit.

GLORY
I need some time to think, Otto.
Will you answer the phones?

INT. CROSS-COUNTRY SKI TRAIL IN THE WOODS - DAY

Glory is skiing,alone. She is talking to the little
sparkles of light that are at her feet. When she is not
talking to them, we see a clear light which only people who
believe can see. When she is conversing with them they
become bright colors of light at her feet. They glide along
with her as she skis. She talks, hoping for some answers.

GLORY
Oh, my little friends, what am I
gonna do? I don't want to go back
to Los Angeles. How can I make
this work?

We see the little lights bobbing up. They are communicating
in a way that Glory seems to understand.

INT. INTERIOR OTTO'S SHOP - DAY

GLORY
Otto, I think I have a solution.
Please hear me out.

OTTO
Gladly. I don't have the answer.

GLORY
I understand that this was my
idea. I thought we'd all be happy
here. It was never your idea, you
loved me so much that you did it
because of that. We've always
lived our lives differently than
most people.

OTTO
That's for sure.

GLORY
How would you feel if you retired
as innkeeper and became my
partner? That way we could change
your title and you wouldn't have
to live up to all the thins you
think an innkeeper must do.

GLORY
It's sounding better and better.

GLORY
I am sort of selfish, I see now. I
never really paid attention to
many things about you.

OTTO
What do you mean?

GLORY
WEll....unlike me you are sort of
shy. You don't enjoy having your
home filled with strangers. I
sort of like going to bed at night
wtih 30 content people under our
roof. It turns me on somehow.

OTTO
Aren't you eve satisfied to do
thins in a little way?

GLORY
It dosn't look that way. But look,
you could work in Hollywood. They
still call you. You make such good
money there, you can send the
money home to pay someone to do
the jobs you do here. Granted
that is about six jobs at times.

OTTO
Go on.

GLORY
When you come home, you won't have
to do the things you hate to do.
You'd be like on a vacation when
you are here.

OTTO
Hmmm......sounds pretty good to
me. Does that mean I don't have
to answer the phone, show people

GLORY

INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

It is a few days later. Otto sits with the inn guests,
talking. He seems very happy. He is wearing a tee-shirt that
says RETIRED INNKEEPER on it. He has happily given up the
title of Innkeeper and all that goes with it.

EXT. CHRISTMAS TIME INSIDE TOO - DAY

Christmas Day. Beautiful decorations outdoors, inside a
huge Christmas tree. Stockings above the fireplace. Just
what everyone wishes Christmas an the inn would be like.
Guests wander around the inn, come in from cross country
skiing, sit by the fire, They have a wonderful relaxed
Christmas day.

INT. KITCHEN - DAY

Meanwhile, back in the kitchen, the turkey is cooking. Pies
are being taken out of the oven, The whole family is working
very hard. Everyone has come home for Christmas.

OTTO
Where is the help? Why do we all
have to be doing this Glory?

GLORY
(apologetically)
I'm so sorry. The help all sais

money. The holidays are when the
tourists want to come. I can't
change that. Please be patient,
well have our Christmas after they
are done.

INT. KITCHEN - DAY

The dish-rack is piled high with dishes. The family is
happy now, enjoying themselves, watching Little Otto open
his presents.

INT. KITCHEN, DAY AFTER CHRISTMAS - DAY

The help shows up and each one passes by the dishes piled
high. They don't look happy but they all pitch in and wash
them They get the picture.

GLORY
Thanks....the whole family would
have walked out if I'd washed the
dishes last night.

INT. OFFICE - DAY

Glory is checking the guests out. They are telling her how
wonderful their Christmas has been. Otto and the rest of
the family are in the background, smirking.

46.

INT. TOWN MEETING AT TOWN HALL - NIGHT

It is March and on the first Monday, each year, there is a
Town Meeting. Otto is excited. He hopes it will be one full
of arguments and excitement. Everyone we have met, shows up
at this meeting of nearly 200 people. Johnny comes to sit
beside Otto and Glory.

WOMAN
We have a real problem with the
graves. The graveyard is getting
to be a mess. It needs to be
surveyed, measured and laid out
properly. The graves are getting
all out of line. If we don't fix
it soon, we won't know who is who.

A raggedy old man, obviously under the influence speaks up
next

MAN
Why all this hullabaloo about all
this stuff. We never used to make
laws like this. Why can't we keep
it like it used to be. Things were
just fine. Did you forget our
state motto or something? "Live
Free or Die?" What's the matter
with living with that?

MODERATOR
That's what we are trying to do
here. We don't want the place
messed up. But to do that
nowadays, we need laws.

            MAN
      (getting the last
       word)
Well, they never did that in my
day.

INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT

The phone rings, Otto answers. He is excited. Glory watches
as his face lights up.

OTTO
Sure, I'd love to do it. This has
been a slow season. Great. Send me
the script.

47.

INT. BEDROOM UPSTAIRS IN THE INN - DAY

Otto is packing, whistling. We can feel he is happier than
he has been in a long time. escape is eminent

INT. PORTLAND AIRPORT - DAY

Otto tells Glory goodbye. She is trying to hide her tears.

OTTO
Are you sure you can handle it
alone? I'm not sure it is fair,
me going off like this.

GLORY
We agreed this was what you needed
to do. It's only fair.

OTTO
I guess that's true.

GLORY
I'm just a little scared, having
the whole responsibility on my
shoulders. But I have big
shoulders.After all it was my
idea, wasn't it? Otto I love you.

They embrace and he boards the plane.

INT. OFFICE - DAY

Glory talks to Otto on the phone.

GLORY
Golly, Otto, I never realized how
much you did. Do you realize how
many people I'm going to have
hire in your place? A breakfast
cook, a chef, a handman, a gardner
and who knows what else I'll need.

INT. HOTEL ROOM IN CALIFORNIA - DAY

Otto is sitting on the bed listening and smiling to himself,
as Glory talks on and on.

48.

INT. KITCHEN - DAY

Glory is interviewing cooks. The applicants are weird. One
very fat man won't even fit in the kitchen. One is so skinny
and emaciated, he must hate food. Another shows up tipsy.
Finally an older woman shows up. This is Gussie. She is a
real rig. (character, in Yankee terms) She is gray-hared,
wears long skirts, big brogan boots and a bright red bandana
around her head. She hate kids, animals, the guests, coming
into her kitchen, but she is a wonderful cook and Glory's
last chance to hire someone before the inn opens for the
season.

INT. BAR - DAY

Ollie and Timber follow Gussie into the bar. She pours
herself a large drink of Baily's Irish Cream. She grumbles
at the dogs when she sees them watching her.

INT. BAR (BEHIND THE KITCHEN) - NIGHT

Glory reaches for the bottle of Bailys and the bottle is
empty. Ollie and Timber turn and look at each other. Every
time Glory reaches for the bottle it is empty.

INT. KITCHEN - DAY

GLORY
Gussie, I seem to have a problem.
I know that you like to use liquor
in your cooking but the Bailys is
going awfully fast. I love your
cooking but you know I don't allow
drinking on the job.

GUSSIE
(a bit apologetic)
Well....maybe I did over do it a
bit. I'll replace it.

GLORY
Thanks.

INT. BAR - DAY

Gussie brings in a bottle of Baily's to replace the empty
one, She pours herself a stiff one before she places it on
the shelf.

INT. BARN - DAY

Glory watches as handyman Heff paints the wall, failing to
take down a picture, he just paints around it.
He cannot do anything right.

INT. OTTO IN HOTEL ROOM - DAY

GLORY
Just tell Heff, I'll pay him to
stay away. It will be cheaper in
the long run.

INT. INN LIVING ROOM - DAY

A sad, little, dejected man is piling wood by the fire place
and wood-stoves.

GLORY
So...where is your family?

MART
My wife left me, she just couldn't
put up with me, so off she went
with the kids. My life always
seems to be going downhill.

Glory goes and gets a glass half full of water and holds it
up in front of him.

GLORY
Mart, what do you see?

MART
Of course, a half empty glass.

INT. OFFICE - DAY

Glory has hired an assistant innkeeper who will also do the
books. Joan is a medieval being , looking as though she
has stepped out of English history. She has long dark hair
and comforts people. She is totally involved in astrology.
She believes in Glory's Sparkles.

GLORY
I don't think I could have done
this alone for one day longer.

50.

JOAN
You're on overload. I understand.

Glory begins to cry. At last someone understands what she
is going through. She gives Joan a hug.

JOAN
I can help in many ways. We can
do astrological charts on people
before we hire them. It really
works. I promise you. I know I
belong here.

INT. OFFICE MONTAGE - DAY

We see a variety of needy, or hippie people showing up for
an interview in the office. Glory smiles because she falls
for their stories. Joan shakes her head. No!

INT. CAMP WEEKEND - DAY

Glory is now able to enjoy the inn-keeping again with Jane
taking care of the office work. Young affluent couples are
bring their children to camp this weekend. They stay at the
inn.

Glory greets Jack as he arrives Jack is a handsome man in
his late thirties, vibrant, ambitious, dressed a suit, but
looking more suited to mountain climbing. Glory is happy to
see him.

Jack leans over and gives Glory a warm hug.

GLORY
Hi Jack.So good to see you again.
How's Katie?

JACK
I'm glad to see you too. Katie
was especially excited about
coming this year. Do you realize
we have been coming ever since you
and Otto bought the inn?

EXT. SCREEN PORCH - NIGHT

After dinner. Glory sits on the porch talking with Jack. He
is more casually dressed now and quite relaxed. They are
watching the fireflies and the stars.

GLORY
I love fireflies, don't you?

JACK
I sure do. Funny, some years they
don't seem to come.

GLORY
I wonder why?

JACK
I don't know. But what I do know
is I love coming here. It's the
one time of the year I can really
get away from it all. I love being
out here in the woods, smelling
the clean air, swimming in the
lake. It sure beats swimming in my
pool with all the chlorine.

GLORY
That's why I'm here too.

JACK
My business has grown so much
through the years. I thought that
was what I wanted. Now I have the
money to travel, but no time to do
it. At least I still make sure I
get to come here every summer.

GLORY
I loved it here the first moment I
saw the inn. I feel as if I'm
finally able to put down roots. I
do wish our business would grow
more quickly. I'm where I want to
be, but if we had more income
maybe Otto would be happy here
too.

JACK
Maybe I should become a partner.
What would you think about that?

GLORY
Are you serious?

JACK
I sometimes wondered what it would
be like to be an innkeeper.A dream
perhaps, but who knows, this might
work for both of us. I'll need
some time to think about it.

INT. OFFICE - DAY

Glory and Joan are pouring over the bills.

GLORY
You know Joan, even with Otto send
home the money, it never seems to
be enough to cover everything.
Does it?

INT. OTTO COMES HOME FROM TIME TO TIME - DAY

Glory hardly has time for him, she is always busy. The phone
rings, the guests need her.

INT. BAR IN TOWN - NIGHT

Otto, Johnny and Louis (a dashing biplane pilot) are sitting
at a bar talking.

JOHNNY
Hey Otto, you seem down tonight.
What's happening.

OTTO
(quite sloshed)
I don't know. My family seems to
be doing what they want, but I
don't fit in. I can't wait to come
home, to be with Glory, but she
stays busy, just like I wasn't
even there. How can I be happy
with things going like that?

LOUIE
I know Glory is always busy but
she always looks happy when I drop
by.

OTTO
I'm sure she is. But I'm not.

JOHNNY
I don't know what to tell you
Otto, except that I have the same
problem with Alana, when our inn
is open. She hates it. When P'm
open for business, I don't even
have time for friends or family or
anyone. Fortunately we are only
open in summer. When we are
open, all my energy goes into
making the guests happy so they
come back again. There's not much
left over. At the end of the day
all I want is a few drinks.

OTTO
Well, I guess I'm not alone. I
understand but I don't like it
much.

INT. PORCH - DAY

Otto wanders around the inn. He sits down on the front porch
and gazes at the mountains. He looks sad. Glory joins him.

GLORY
Hey Otto. Why don't we pack a
picnic lunch and go for a hike in
the mountains. There aren't any
guests til tonight.

INT. RIVER - DAY

Otto and Glory, walk, swim in the river, laugh and hug. We
can see they are happy.

OTTO
This is what I have been missing.
I really need some time alone with
you Glory.

They fall asleep, time passes and suddenly Glory wakes up.
She looks at her watch and awakens Otto.

54.

GLORY
Otto, wake up. I'm late, I have to
cook tonight.

OTTO
What do you man cook? You have a
cook.

GLORY
The cook called in sick. Darlene
said she'd prep for me, but she
can't do the cooking.

Otto is mad and in his mind rightfully so.

OTTO
Don't I ever come first in your
life any more?

GLORY
I don't think that's a fair
question. I think you have to
grow up and look at this situation
from both sides.

OTTO
I feel all I'm good for is to send
money home, so you can be happy
and run the inn. What do I get in
return? Nothing I need or want.

Otto packs up the car, throwing thins in angrily

INT. LATER THAT NIGHT KITCHEN - NIGHT

Glory is cooking dinner, Otto is in the bar, having too much
to drink.

INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT

Otto and Glory get into bed. They are not speaking. Otto
passes out. Things are not going well between them.

INT. SHEILA'S OFFICE - DAY

A cozy room with flowered furniture. Sheila a psychologist
is asking Glory some questions.

55.

GLORY
I guess, Otto felt he was sending
all his money home, and that
entitled him to my attention when
he came home. In a way, I know how
he feels.

SHEILA
How do you know how he feels?

GLORY
Maybe, I don't know what he feels.
I've read about the syndrome
military wives have to put up
with. The husband is gone, the
wife has to take over everything
at home. When the husband returns,
he wants to take over again. Or
in my case, he wants attention.
The truth is the family has begun
to live without that person and it
makes it very hard to drop
everything you are doing for the
time the husband is home. It's
sort of like you have to play a
game and when he leaves again, you
get back to your real life.

SHEILA
I do understand what you are
feeling. It's not easy to live
lives apart and then come together
again.

GLORY
I have the family here, and
support, knowing that they are
near and caring. The people who
work at the inn are my friends
too. Otto is out there all my
himself, doing this for us. I know
I should be more responsive to his
needs when he comes home. I just
don't have time. I spend more
time on the phone with him when he
is gone. We seem closer when he
is away than when he comes home.

SHEILA
Why is that?

GLORY
He calls very early, or very late
when I have time to talk. When
he's here he wants my prime time.
It's almost like a kid, you know
when you are on the telephone,
they want more attention.

SHEILA
What do you think is the answer?

GLORY
Maybe more money would help.

INT. SCREEN PORCH - NIGHT

Glory sits on the porch with Jack who has come back to take
his daughter home from camp. It is a few weeks later.

            JACK
      (sits back and
       seems to relax)
What a summer! I'm getting a
divorce. I've known it was coming
for a while. My work takes up all
my time. I can't blame my wife,
she got a life to live too.

GLORY
I understand. It's hard to be
alone, just waiting for someone to
come home, or just wanting to
spend time with you, when you are
too busy.

JACK
You met my girlfriend Jennifer
last night. She's fun and sexy,
but I don't think Katie likes her
very much.

GLORY
Why?

GLORY
I'm not really sure. They just
don't get along very well.
Jennifer tries, but it doesn't
work. In fact, I think Katie
doesn't even want to come home, if
the truth be known.

57.

GLORY
That's too bad.

INT. CAMP BUNK ROOM - DAY

Katie is packing up to come home. She talks to her
roommate.

KATIE
I hate Dad's girlfriend. I wish I
didn't have to go home. She's
always trying to get rid of me, so
she can have him to herself. He
never believes me when I tell him
that.

INT. EXTERIOR CAMP - DAY

Jack picks Katie up at camp. She kisses him, but acts
sullen.

INT. DINING ROOM - NIGHT

The dining room is full of parents and children. The
children seem happy to see their parents, all except Katie.
She is sitting at a table with Jack and Jennifer, who is
decked out looking very sexy. Katie is getting more and
more upset.

KATIE
It doesn't matter. Nobody cares
about how I feel anyway.

Katie runs out of the dining room, up the stairs, the door
slams. Jack starts to go after her, but Jennifer pulls his
arm.

JENNIFER
Oh, Jack, don't bother. She's just
a little upset, about leaving her
friends at camp. I'm sure that's
it. Let her have some time to
herself.

Jack sits back down.

58.

INT. HALL OUTSIDE KATIE'S ROOM - NIGHT

We hear crying through Katie's door. A few minutes later, we
see Katie sneaking the back stairs, out the door, into the
night. A while later we hear the rain begin to fall and
lightning and thunder booming in the night sky.

INT. GLORY'S BEDROOM - NIGHT

Glory is sound asleep. She awakens as she hears an urgent
knocking on her door. She is disheveled and sleepy.

GLORY
Come in.

JACK
Glory, Katie's disappeared. Where
could she have gone.

Glory leaps out of bed. Ollie and Timber follow her.

GLORY
Jack, call the police. I'll get
dressed and we'll see what we can
do.

As Glory dresses she talks to the dogs.

GLORY
What do you think could have
happened? Where can she be? What
should we do?

Ollie leaves the room and comes back a few moments later
with a small radio collar. Glory is delighted.

GLORY
Great idea. I forgot. We used to
use that for little Otto, when we
were worried about him wandering
off. You can go looking for her
and then bark when you find her.
I'll be able to hear you.

Ollie and Timber look at her like they understand and off
they go.

GLORY
Good luck you two. I know you can
find her. Remember to bark when
you do. I'll keep the receiver
here with me and listen.

59.

EXT. DAWN AT THE INN - DAY

The police have arrived, there are reporters too. They are
interviewing Jack. Now a television truck arrives. Nothing
so big has happened in the area for years. Glory didn't
realize what a truly important attorney Jack is. At this
time he is involved in a touchy criminal case.

REPORTER #1
Do you think there is any foul
play by the people involved in the
case you're working on?

REPORTER #2
The group you are prosecuting is
made up of a bunch of shady
characters.

REPORTER #1
Could she have been kidnapped?

EXT. WOODS - DAY

Otto and Timber travel through the woods. They go up and
down mountain trails, rocky, bumpy places. They come to a
place where there is a bridge that has fallen into a river.
All that is left is a log which goes to the other side of
the river. There is a waterfall. It is a dangerous place.
The two dogs carefully cross the log, never stopping, to be
afraid. The second they cross the log tumbles into the
river below. They are now stranded. They canot turn back.
They keep on and come to a cave-like place in the cliff.
There, tucked away, is Katie, sleeping. The dogs start
licking her face. She wakes up.

KATIE
Oh! Thank heavens, it's you. I
was dreaming and then I was
dreaming a bear was licking my
face. It was awful.

She is bedraggled, scratched and weary. She begins to cry.

KATIE
How did you get here? I think I
heard the bridge fall a moment
after I crossed.

Timber barks and Glory hears him on the radio.

60.

EXT. INN AND ON TO FOREST - DAY

Jack and Glory hear Katie talking to the dogs. Nobody can
talk to Katie, but at least they know she is safe.
The police listen and get some bearings on the radio signal
and then call the rescue squad who is trained to help in
cases like this.

EXT. FOREST - DAY

The rescue crew jump into jeeps and off they go. They cling
to the jeep as they fly down the road, over bumps that
challenge the four wheel drive. The trail is only meant for
hikers and it is difficult When they arrive at the
waterfall, they see the fallen bridge and realize they can
go no farther.

RESCURER #1
Boy, the storm must have really
been something up here, last
night.

RESCURER #2
She must have crossed the bridge
just before it fell in the river.
We'd better radio the helicopter.
This is as far as we can go.

EXT. FOREST NEAR KATIE - DAY

Helicopter arrives and picks up Katie, Timber and Ollie.

People are waiting on the lawn. The helicopter arrives.
Jack, Glory, all the help, the guests and the reporters
await the landing. Jack helps Katie off the helicopter.
Ollie and Timber climb out with help. Jack gives Katie a
big hug.

KATIE
You.d better hug Timber and Ollie
too.

Jack gives the dogs a warm hug.

He looks up at Katie.

JACK
Oh, Katie, I'm so sorry. I didn't
realize you were telling me the
truth about Jennifer. I'm sorry,
that it took this to make me
realize it.

KATIE
(in tears)
Dad, I thought you didn't care
about me any more. Mom doesn't
either. She has her new boyfriend,
and I feel left out.

JACK
That's not true. I'm so sorry you
felt like that.
How on earth did you get so far
away so quickly?

KATIE
Remember when we took the
overnight hike this summer. We
went that way. I had a
flashlight, but I didn't realize
the rain would be so bad, or that
the bridge would wash out. Oh Dad,
I was so afraid.

INT. OFFICE - DAY

Jack is checking out.

JACK
Glory, thanks so much for helping
me understand what my priorities
should be. Katie and I are fine
now. I am going to give some
thought to what we talked about
last night.

JACK
This is such a wonderful place.
People just need to discover it.

GLORY
I think they already have. The
publicity about Katie has been
nationwide. The phone is running
off the hook
Even Timber and Ollie are
celebrities.

INT. SHEILA'S OFFICE - DAY

GLORY
Our money worries seem to be on
the way to being solved. OUr
business is great. In reality,
there is a bigger problem Why is
it once one problems gets solved,
another is right behind it?

SHEILA
It's sort of like a house of
cards. Once you get it all figured
out and built, it all comes
tumbling dwon and you have to
rebuild again.

GLORY
(Big Sigh)
That's discouraging.

GLORY
It seems that way, but each time
it falls and you rebuild, you gain
new skills for living and
hopefully you won't have to
relearn them.

GLORY
What good does it do me if I can't
help other people?

SHEILA
We all want to see progress in an
instant. When you help yourself
you help the whole human race.
That includes your loved ones.

GLORY
I hope that's true.

INT. INN - DAY

The Inn bustles with business. The dining room is full, the
living room filled with people by the fire. Cars pull up to
the front door.. The full sign goes up time after time.

INT. OFFICE - DAY

            GLORY
      (Happily paying
       the bills)
Joan, look! I've paid all the
bills and there's still some money
left in the account. It's a
miracle.

INT. OTTO'S SHOP - DAY

OTTO
I have to be honest with you
Glory. I know you are so happy
the inn is doing good. But it's
never going to work for me. I
drink too much, I'm not happy, I'm
tired of being nice and polite all
the time because of the guests.
Here I have to keep my teeth
clenched if I want to yell,

GLORY
But......

OTTO
Please let me finish, without you
telling me what I should do.

OTTO
I know you hate my drinking and I
do too. It is getting worse and
everyone here has told me that. I
have made reservations at a rehab
in Durham. I am going there
January 2.

Glory begins to cry and holds him close.

INT. CAR ON WAY TO REHAB - DAY

OTTO
(Sarcastic)
Did you decide to drive me so I
won't escape?

Front of rehab, Otto gets out of the car

OTTO
Shall I stagger in, so I don't
dissapoint them?

Glory kisses Otto and drives off.

INT. DETOX - DAY

Nurse at detox is explaining to Otto what will happen

NURSE
You will have three days of detox.

OTTO
I haven't had a drink for three
weeks.

NURSE
Doesn't matter, we always allow
for three days at first. Your
roommate will arrive in a
while.Relax.

INT. DETOX CENTER MEETING ROOM - DAY

COUNSELOR
First I want you to write your
biography. Be as truthful as
possible.

Otto writes, it is not easy. Then he reads it out loud.

OTTO
Drinking was my way of not dealing
with my life. I followed my
Pappy's example. He used to look
at a glass of scotch and say, "How
did they make it taste so good?" I
grew up wanting to be like my dad.
I guess I succeeded. But then the
drinking instead of being fun,
became an escape. I lost control.
It became my bast friend. When my
wife didn't have time for me, I
turned to good old Johnny Walker.

As Otto tells his story, we see the others in the room
squirming as though they fully understand.

INT. MEETING ROOM - DAY

COUNSELOR
Now to your therapy groups.

Otto sits in a small mixed group.

COUNSELOR
WE begin to share ourselves. This
is the most important thing we do
here. It helps us all.

Everyone is uncomfortable. Nobody wants to be the first to
share. There is no coffee, no cigarettes.

            DORIS
      (A 35 year old
       woman)
I think this is working, I'm gonna
go home and be different.

            JULIA
      (older looks like
       she has been
       through the
       wringer)
I talked with my husband. He
still hats me for the problems
I've cause him and the kids.

            MARY
      (Young girl maybe
       20)
My mother thinks I'll always be a
drunk like my father.

OTTO
My wife says that my life has
always been too easy. I never took
responsibility. She's right, I
never wanted to. But I found a
woman who wanted to make me happy
and Lord knows she tried. But it
never worked. Coming here was the
first time I really took
responsibility for myself. It
feels good.

            OTTO
      (Later after all
       class has left.
       Only he and the
       counselor remain)

After hearing those stories, I
realize how lucky I am. I have
full support at home.

Now that I understand that
drinking is a disease, my load has
been lifted. I always thought I
could do this on my own. I never
needed anybody. That's why
nothing worked out for me. Now I
can let go and let God. Now I've
got the tools to work with.

Counselor smiles and nods in approval

INT. FOREST DAY - DAY

Glory sits in the woods on a colorful blanket. The little
Sparkles at her feet twinkle. She is meditating. she
awakens and begins to write.

GLORY
(Voice over))
Things have to change. I need
someone to help me run the inn so
I can spend more time with Otto.I
picture innkeepers coming soon.

INT. OFFICE - DAY

GLORY
Joan, look at this, here's a
couple who sound just perfect.
They could start this summer.

JOAN
Don't you think you might
interview more than one couple?

GLORY
Nobody else has answered our ad.

JOAN
You haven't given anyone much time
to answer.

INT. LIVING ROOM - DAY

Glory and Jane interview the potential innkeepers.

            BETTY
      (pleasant looking
       but stiff)
I've run a successful catering
business. I was raised in an
upper-class family, so I'm aware
of all the niceties people on
vacation appreciate.

WILLIAM
(has gift of gab)
I am managing a big apartment
complex. This looks like a piece
of cake.

GLORY
Have you ever lived in the country
before?

BETTY
No, not really, but I'd like to
get out of the big city.

All during the interview, Joan quietly observes the two
applicants.

GLORY
When can you start?

Jane looks surprised.

INT. OFFICE - DAY

JOAN
Oh! Why didn't you give me a
chance to do their charts. That
woman is a snob and he seems lazy.
Do you really want to hire them
without giving anyone else a
chance?

GLORY
Nobocy else has answered the ad. I
want to get going and be able to
spend time with Otto. I'll give
them a try.

INT. OFFICE - DAY

Glory is hiring help for the summer

GLORY
Jenny, I'm so glad to have you.
Come in a week early and we'll
practice cooking the meals. In the
meant take home these recipes so
you can become familiar with what
we cook. In fact bring your
boyfriend to dinner and you can
see how our dining room runs.

JENNY
What a great job. My boyfriend
always enjoys a free dinner.

INT. OFFICE - DAY

Things aren't starting out right.

GLORY
(on phone)
What do you mean? You can't come
for two more weeks? Joan is on
vacation, we planned on you being
here. I need you now!

BETTY
(apologising)
We cant get there. Some problems
came up and we have to see to them
before we leave.

Glory is angry, but she doesn't want to lost them now.

GLORY
All right. But get here as soon as
possible. We are already behind.

INT. INN - DAY

Betty and William the innkeepers have arrived, already we
can see Glory has made a huge mistake. William is wandering
around with a clip-board, ordering everyone about, but not
doing anything but writing on his clipboard. Glory walks
by carrying a heavy little table. William watches her, never
offering to help. Glory smolders.

69.

INT. KITCHEN - NIGHT

BETTY
(to Jenny the cook)
I know, Glory told you how she
wants that, but I have a much
better way. I come from a
high-class family. I'm sure the
guests will like this better.

INT. KITCHEN - NIGHT

Glory walks into the kitchen and sees Jenny sitting on a
stool. Wondering why she isn't cooking, she sees Betty
cooking a special dinner.

GLORY
What's this?

BETTY
Its William's dinner

GLORY
Why isn't he eating after the
guests like we all do?

BETTY
He can't eat all that rich stuff.
Besides, he can't wait that late.

GLORY
I think we are going to have to
get some thins straight around
her.

Glory angrily stalks out of the kitchen and returns a little
later when Betty is gone.

JENNY
Glory, I hate to complain when you
have been so good to me. But I
can't stand Betty. She criticizes
everything you do, behind your
back. She hates the way I cook.

INT. OFFICE - DAY

JOAN
Glory I'm sorry I took my vacation
when they started. They are awful.
All the help hates them.I don't

even think the guests like them

GLORY
You are right, I was in too much
of a hurry. Even the animals
growl at them. Nobody likes them.

INT. KITCHEN AND OUTSIDE - DAY

There is a list on the wall for 4th of July Annual
Celebration festivities. Betty stands in the background
smirking.

GLORY
William, where are the legs that
go to the half barrel we use to
cook the food, Where is the wood,
I asked you to chop for the fire?
You can set it up where the stones
are in the yard.

BETTY
Do you really serve this kind of
food? It's so messy.

            GLORY
      (angry, but shakes
       her head in
       frustration)
Yes, Betty. Our guests love this.

EXT. BARBECUE AREA - DAY

William stands by barbecue pit, clipboard in hand.

            WILLIAM
      (Loving to give
       orders.)
I guess this is the barrel. The
legs look sort of spindly. We
need to have some wood chopped.
You can cut the lawn later.

Glory comes up to show William how the lobsters are to be
cooked.

            GLORY
      (Horrified then
       furious)
William these legs aren't the ones

GLORY (cont'd)
we sue for this. What happened to
the barrel. It has holes in it.
Why didn't you tell me so I could
get another
another?

William looks haughtily at Glory as though she is speaking
another language.

INT. BARBECUE AREA - DAY

Glory drags a burlap of seaweed. She carries a crate of
lobsters, more bags of potatoes and corn. She lines the
hole ridden barrel with aluminum wrap hoping that will work.
William and Betty are nowhere to be seen.
Glory piles the wood underneath the barrel and lights the
fire. When the fire is burning well, she comes and takes
the seaweed out of the bags and lines the barrel. Next the
lobsters go in, more seaweed, then potatoes and corn on the
cob. Just as she is ready to add the steamers, to her
horror, the legs under the barrel, begin to melt, the barrel
rolls over, off the fire. The lobsters are jumping around on
the front lawn.

GLORY
SHIT!!

As Glory utters her disgust, she turns around and sees a
guest from Texas walking toward her.

GLORY
Excuse my language.

TEXAN
Pardon me Mam. We don't have clam
bakes in Texas, but I think there
is a slight problem. Can I help?

Between them Glory and The Texan pull the legs off the fire
and set the barrel on the rocks and put the lobsters back
in. Glory takes the clams back into the kitchen and gives
them to the Cook to put on the stove. When she returns she
sees that the water from the seaweed is leaking through the
holes in the barrel. She gets a hair-dryer, runs an
electric cord to the area and sits by the fire, blowing with
the dryer which works like a bellows.

72.

EXT. LATE AFTERNOON - DAY

Glory is sitting with the dryer. She is dirty and smells
like fish and fire. Betty and William come out all showered,
starched and clean. She hates them.

GLORY
Where have you been all afternoon?
I thought you told me you knew
how to do this, William. You were
supposed to cook while I
supervised.

WILLIAM
Actually, I've never done a clam
bake per se. I didn't think I
could be of much help. Plus I had
to get ready for the guests this
evening.

BETTY
I've been inside entertaining the
guests, making drinks and all that
stuff.

GLORY
(glowering)
Here's the serving utensils. You
serve dinner. I'm tired, dirty,
smelly and I'm gonna blow if I'm
not careful. That wouldn't be
fair to the guests.

William and Betty take over. They act like they have cooked
the whole dinner, with the guests arriving and oohing and
aahing. They take all the credit.

INT. OFFICE - DAY

Joan and Glory are on one side of the room. Betty and
William on the other.

GLORY
You're out of here. I've had it.
This is my inn!

Joan smiles, Betty is nervous, William hasn't a clue he
isn't working out.

WILLIAM
What do you mean? I enjoy this.

GLORY
Yes, but you don't do the jobs
that need to be done.

BETTY
I work very hard.

GLORY
Yes Betty, you do work hard, but
it's not about criticizing, it's
about finding solutions. It's
about making people happy so they
can work together well. It's about
the people who come here to have a
good vacation. Without that, this
inn won't continue to exist.

INT. DRIVEWAY OF INN - DAY

Betty and William are packed up and driving away. All the
help is clapping and the dogs tails are wagging.

INT. KITCHEN - DAY

Glory is preparing things. Phone rings

JENNY
Glory, I'm so sorry, I've just
come from the doctor. He says I
have to have bed rest. I'm so
sorry to leave you in the lurch. I
hope you'll be okay.

INT. KITCHEN - DAY

Montage of disastrous cooks

Bob is working with a cooking school group in the kitchen
and the stove explodes.

Howard burns everything and glowers at the waitress's when
they bring food back.

Thomas, wears ball cap. Glory tastes his soup which is
supposed to be Tomato Soup with Cognac

GLORY
(spits out soup)
This tastes like spaghetti sauce.
Did you ever taste it? Did you
use our recipe?

INT. MONTAGE - DAY

Glory is cooking now. We also see her making lists,
shopping working in the office. She has no time to visit
with the guests. She is weary, falls into bed at night and
up early in the morning

INT. OFFICE - DAY

JOAN
Glory, look at this insurance
bill. It's gone from $6,000 a
year to $26,000.

            GLORY
      (dials the
       insurance company)
I want to speak to someone about
this insurance bill, You surely
made a mistake.

            GLORY
      (nods her head and
       listens)
Cancel it. I can't afford to make
payments like that. I'll take my
chances.

Later, all the help is in the office.

GLORY
I have to be honest. I need your
help. I can't afford the
insurance hike. So please make
sure all the rugs are down flat.
Be careful when building fires in
the stoves. I'm trying to find
another company but lets be very
careful.

INT. FRONT DOOR AND LIVING ROOM - DAY

A man dressed in a suit comes to the front door. He presents
his card to Glory.

STATE INSPECTOR
How do you do. I'm the new state
safety inspector. We are going
through these old places to check
and see what needs to be upgraded.

GLORY
Oh great. Just what I need. We
have always been safe here, no
problems.

STATE INSPECTOR
You never know what could happen.
I'm going to have a look around.

The inspector, takes out his clipboard and Glory shows him
through the inn. He takes notes. When he is finished he
indicates Glory should sit down.

STATE INSPECTOR
This place needs upgrading. You
need to enclose your electric
wires in conduit. You need
emergency lights, everywhere, a
new staircase off the rooms over
the dining area. It doesn't all
have to be done at once, but you
must begin making these
improvements, or we will have to
close you down.

            GLORY
      (near tears
       herself)
Great. You announce that I need to
do over $25,000 worth of repairs,
just like that. Where do you think
that money will come from? I'll
do what I can, but the summer is
just beginning and business is
slow this year. I have no money
yet.

INT. KITCHEN - DAY

Charlie, Town Selectman knocks and then comes into the
kitchen. He is a backwoods type of fellow with a Maine
drawl.

CHARLIE
Hey Glory, I got a complaint from
your neighbor about the septic
system. What's going on here?

GLORY
I don't know, I'll check on it.

CHARLIE
Best do it right away, or I'll
have to close you down.

GLORY
(very sarcastic)
Sure Charlie, are there any other
problems that could possibly come
up? And I thought you were a
friend.

CHARLIE
Sorry, but this here is town
business.

INT. OFFICE - NIGHT

GLORY
(In tears)
Everything is so difficult for me
right now. Nobody applies for
cook or innkeeper. I don't know
what to do.

OTTO
May I remind you, you said work
should be fun. If it isn't you
should quit or make changes.

GLORY
(sadly)
Thanks for reminding me.

OTTO
Sell the place. Maybe now it's
tiem to listen to me for once.

GLORY
(blubbering.)
I thought we'd be here forever.
What else can I do? I don't want
to live this area.

OTTO
Just imagine this. We can build
the house you have plans for. We
can takes walks, enjoy the grand
kids, spend time together. Isn't
that enough for you?

GLORY
(through her tears)
You're right.

INT. HOTEL MEETING ROOM - DAY

Glory enters a room where a sign says IS IT TIME TO SELL
YOUR INN. She sits and as the speaker goes on she writes in
a notebook.
The speaker Phil is a large man, who looks at though he
enjoys the good life. He specializes in selling inns and
runs seminars.

PHIL
If you even consider selling your
inn, give me a call. I'll come up
and for no charge, help you decide
waht's best for you.

            GLORY
      (end of meeting
       talking with Phil)
It used to be such fun running our
inn.When we were beginning and
knew nothing, it seemed simple.
How come now, that we know more,
it is more difficult.

PHIL
Times change. It's been eight and
a half years now. Inns have
become big business, It's all
different.

GLORY
Please come as soon as you can.

INT. OUTSIDE AND INSIDE THE INN - DAY

GLORY
I'll explain how I work. I like to
get the feel of the place, then I
go over the books and then I can
advise you.

We see Phil looking around the inn, taking with guests,
surveying the grounds, talking to the help, drinking a nice
bottle of wine with dinner, observing everything.

INT. OFFICE - DAY

PHIL
Can we talk in private here Glory?

GLORY
Sure. The guests are gone and the
hep is busy.

PHIL
Remember when you started
inn-keeping There were no
inn-keeping classes. No
information about innkeeper
burnout and all that sort of
stuff?

GLORY
Yeah. We sort of stumbled
through, learning as we went. On
the job.

PHIL
Since then we have studies that
tell us the average innkeeper
lasts only six years at the most.
Then he or she burns out. You
know, no privacy, it's hard on
family life. Plus now you're no
spring chicken and ten years older
than when you began.

GLORY
You are right. I never even
thought about my age. Inside I
feel the same, but time has
passed.

PHIL
The truth is, you are a people
person not a real business person.
Times have changed, you have to
have a guest type that is the
same. Sadly kids, the young
adults, the retired, don't want to
be around each other. The
atmosphere is so intimate. Plus I
doubt that you'd eve want to keep

a close eye on costs. That is what
can make a place like this work.
All the family is gone now, so
your costs for help are so high.

GLORY
What you are saying is all true. I
never put it all together. I was
trying to hang onto my dream.

PHIL
Glory, don't feel badly. You are a
wonderful innkeeper. Your guests
all love you, but even so, it's
time to sell.

GLORY
You are right. Otto wanted to quit
a long time ago. I needed someone
else to help me see clearly and
make the decision.

PHIL
You are not alone. I can do it
from a business point. Most
innkeepers put their heart and
soul into their business. Probably
they have to or they wouldn't have
the energy to keep going.

GLORY
You are so right. I pictured my
family living here forever. You
know like Johnny's place. I could
see the kids taking over then the
grand kids. But finally I have
realized I can't plan anyone's
life. To be truthful, I thought we
were changing our own lives, but
it's been just as frantic here at
the inn as it used to be in Los
Angeles. Some things changed, but
not the busy life.

INT. OFFICE - DAY

Otto and Glory are looking at house plans. They want a house
that looks old. They plan to build right across the street
from the inn, but back in the forest.

GLORY
(to the builder)
We went the same view as the inn.

OTTO
Lets make this as energy efficient
as possible.

GLORY
But we have to have big windows
facing north.That is the view.

The builder shakes his head.

We see the post and beam house going up. Glory goes there
every day to see the progress. She wants to move in before
the inn is sold.

EXT. LOOKING BACK AT THE INN - DAY

Glory is taking a good look at the inn. It is at it's most
beautiful. The sky is bright blue, the flowers all in
bloom, the grass emerald green. It is at it's shining best.
Glory is talking to the inn as though it is a person.

GLORY
My beautiful inn. I never imagined
you would become a burden. I
thought you would always be my
life. Now I know I must let you
go. As beautiful as you are, you
are a material thing. I have
loved the experience you have
given me and allowing me to care
for you. But now someone else can
care for you. After all I'll be
just across the street.

INT. NEW HOUSE - DAY

The new house has just been finished, It still has much to
be done, but Glory is happy to have her own place. She is
in the bedroom, sitting on a mattress on the floor. Her
clothes are piled around the room. The outside has barely
been finished. The dogs are happily curled up at her feet.
Otto is on the pbone.

OTTO
I hope you are doing everything
carefully. Don't let that salesman
take advantage of you.Stick with
(MORE)

OTTO (cont'd)
the price we agreed on. Be sure to
write down that we take my truck
and my favorite chair.

GLORY
Otto, slow down. I hear you. Just
a minute, why don't you come back
here and do the sale? I still
have an inn to run until it's
sold.

GLORY
We want to sell it so we can
benefit from the tax breaks this
year. But be sure you get a good
price. We put all our money into
it for all these years. I don't
want that to go down the drain.

GLORY
Otto, what's with you. It's not
easy. First I have to find a
surveyor and they'll all be busy
at this time of year. I'll have
to go to town hall for meetings
and approvals for subdividing the
property we want to keep.

OTTO
It sounds complicatd.

GLORY
I have to go to the lawyers, to
draw up papers and in the meantime
we have to find a buyer.

GLORY
And I still have to cook, and run
the inn, and this is the busiest
time of the year. If I don't plan
in advance, it will be too late
when the buyer shows up.

OTTO
I thought that came first.

GLORY
Good idea. It's so easy to give
advice from so far away. Your
physical energy would be far more
appreciated.

OTTO
Maybe I'd better be quiet.

INT. INN, - DAY

Phil arrives with possible buyers Glory takes him aside
before he comes in.

GLORY
Please try not to let the help
know they are buyers. I haven't
told anyone but Joan.

PHIL
No problem, I understand.

EXT. MONTAGE ALSO INSIDE INN - DAY

Possible buyers explore the inn.

A well dressed couple are looking around. the woman is
wearing very high heels that hamper her walking. The
mosquitoes buzz around her because she wears so much
perfume.

GLORY
Oh, the bugs just love perfume. I
never wear it in the summer.

MRS BALLOU
(to her husband)
Oh how can anyone live so far away
from everything? It's beautiful,
but ugh the bugs. What is there to
do here.

A yuppie couple walk through the barn rooms.

MRS YUPPIE
What a wonderful barn.

They walk up the driveway past the English flower gardens.

MRS YUPPIE
These flowers are all beautiful Do
you do all the gardening?

GLORY
In the beginning I tried, but we'd
get so busy by the middle of
summer, the weeds would take over.
Now have some super gardners.

Dining room at night.

MRS YUPPIE
What wonderful food. I'd love to
cook like this.

The inn is empty of people except for Glory Phil, Mr and Mrs
Yuppie. The people wander around making comments.

MRS YUPPIE
If we had the place, I don't think
I'd allow any children or dogs,
that would keep it simple.

MR YUPPIE
I think we'd be non smoking.

GLORY
I'm all for that. I just never had
the nerve to do it.

Mrs. Yuppie straightens up the magazines and the chair so
that all looks precise.
They shake hands and say goodbye. Glory likes them, but
wonders if the guests could relax around them.

After they leave, Phil and Glory talk

PHIL
I think they really liked the
place, but I'm not sure they can
come up with the money.

As Glory listens to Phil she starts mimicking them,
straightening things round the office.

GLORY
I liked them well enough, but I
wonder if they would lose our
business after a while. After all
our business is families with kids
and people who like animals. But
I have to remember it won't be my
place anymore.

Timber and Ollie are growling softly.

PHIL
What's that?

INT. KITCHEN - DAY

All the help is gossiping among themselves, wondering what
is happening. When Glory walks into the kitchen everyone is
quiet.

GLORY
Let's go into the living room and
I'll explain what is happening.

INT. LIVING ROOM - DAY

All the help is sitting around and Glory stands in front of
the fireplace.

GLORY
It's only fair to tell you what is
happening.I know everyone is
wondering. I haven't tried to keep
secrets, I just wanted to get
things straight before I told you.

You all know what a difficult time
I'v had this summer. You have
been wonderful. But now with all
the family gone, I have to admit I
can't run the inn by myself.

DARLENE
What are you going to do?

GLORY
I have put the inn up for sale
with people who only sell inns.
But selling it could take a long
time. As far as your jobs go,
don't worry. I am sure anyone who
buys the place won't be able to do
without you.

DARLENE
Thanks for letting us know.
Believe me, we understand. We see
you are always exhausted. We're
gonna hate to see it change, but
it's best for you.

Everyone nods in agreement and of course Glory starts to
cry.

INT. DINING ROOM - DAY

The Ferrucci Family has arrived to look at the inn. There
are two grown children. The parents have an Italian
accent.

Phil and Glory sit with The Ferrucci family, having coffee.
It is fall and the view couldn't be more beautiful.

MRS. FERRUCCI
Look at this view. It ahs to be
the most wonderful place on earth
to have breakfast. Don't you think
so Margurite?

MRS. FERRUCCI
Oh Reggie, dear, I do agree. I
want to live here. Now that we've
discovered this place, I can't
imagine living anywhere else.

The dogs are sitting at their feet and the Ferrucci's are
each petting one.

INT. NEW HOUSE - DAY

Glory sits in a chair eating Ben and Jerry's Cherry Garcia
ice cream. She is talking to Otto on the phone.

GLORY
Otto, I think this is it. If we
accept the offer when it comes, we
can be retired in no time. I
really do like the Ferruccis.

INT. OFFICE - NIGHT

Phil and Glory are going over books, looking through papers,
making up lists. It is late at night and the inn is quiet.

PHIL
Glory, I think we've come to an
agreement. We can agree to all
your terms and you agree to all of
the Ferrucci's termms. The most
important thing is they want to
take over and move in before
Christmas.

GLORY
That will be just fine with me.
It's funny how easy this seems now
that I made up my mind to go ahead
and sell.

Glory gets a bottle of wine and two glasses and they
celebrate.

GLORY
There's so much to do, the time
just seems to be slipping away.

INT. TOWN HALL, NOVEMBER - NIGHT

Glory is there with the blueprints from the surveyor to show
the selectmen. They are dividing the land. There are many
other people sitting there, awaiting their turn for
business. The selectmen are five, very stern men and one
woman. They make up the planning board. Glory presents them
with the blueprint. They pass it around, studying it
carefully. The head man, Mr UnderHill, (large and gruff)
shakes his head and addresses Glory.

The planning board only meets once a month. The next
meeting will be early in December.

MR UNDERHILL
glory, these plans are almost
right. But there is one more
thing your surveyor must do. I
told him last time, but perhaps he
didn't understand.

GLORY
I'm so disappointed. Will we be
able to do it by then?

OTHER SELECTMAN
That's your problem.

87.

INT. SURVEYORS OFFICE. - DAY

Mac Goodshoe is a backwoods type of surveyor. Never in a
hurry, a real Yankeep Takes everything slow and casual.

GLORY
What happened, Mac, we have to
have this done by town meeting in
December, if we don't they may
back out on the sale. I don't
think I could stand that. We are
so close. Please,can't you get it
done right this time?

MAC GOODSHOE
I'll do my best, but I am very
busy.

INT. TOWNHALL - NIGHT

December. Glory signs in and talks with a selectman.

GLORY
Mac will meet me here so he can be
sure it is right. How late do you
think this will run?

OTHER SELECTMAN
We are discussing the town plan
tonight. After that we will
discuss your business.

We see it is late and Mac has not arrived. Glory looks at
her watch, she gets up and makes a phone call.She is upset.
Mac has fallen asleep at home, but now he is on his way. It
is now eleven o'clock when Mac comes through the door.

MAC GOODSHOE
See, told you there was nothing to
worry about. These town plans take
forever.

GLORY
I see you are right, but I want
everything to go right, Mac.

It is eleven thirty when the selectman signals to Glory to
come forward. Mac is asleep on a bench. Glory shakes him
awake.
The selectmen look over the plan again, frowning, studying
and finally Mr. Underhill speaks.

MR UNDERHILL
Mac, this is almost correct, but
there is still one place on the
old plans, your father originally
measured with chains. It is not
measured correctly. We must have
that done, before we can okay it.

GLORY
(is crushed)
But there aren't any more town
meetings before the end of the
year. What can I do now?

MR UNDERHILL
(softening)
If Mac can get this done right
away, you can bring it to my
house. I will sign it and you can
get it recorded at the court house
in time.

GLORY
Oh, thank God.

EXT. DAY, IT IS SNOWING - DAY

Mac and his little old father are bundled up in snow
clothes. They are carrying their measuring equipment.

INT. GLORY'S LIVING ROOM - DAY

A fire burns in the fireplace, Mac, his father and Glory are
drinking brandy.

MAC GOODSHOE
My father originally surveyed this
property and he was able to
remember the measurement Mr.
Underhill was talking about.

GLORY
It seems a shame for you to have
to go out in the cold like this.

MAC'S FATHER
I love it. My wife usually makes
me stay in nowadays.

INT. MR UNDERHILL'S HOUSE A CAPE - NIGHT

It is still snowing. The cape is cozy and warm inside.
Glory knocks at the door. Mrs. Underhill answers. She is a
quiet, timid little woman.

GLORY
Is your husband home?

MRS UNDERHILL
Oh, no, Glory. I'm sorry. He's
out of town until tomorrow night.

GLORY
Please have him call me as sooon
as he returns. This is urgent.

INT. MR UNDERHILLS OFFICE AT HOME - NIGHT

Mr Underhill sits at his desk, signs the paper. Glory
smiles in relief.

INT. LAWYERS OFFICE - DAY

An old fashioned New England lawyers office. It is
decorated for Christmas. Everyone involved with the sale is
arriving. The Ferrucci's, Glory, Teresa, the lawyers for
each family and Phil. They march into a large room with a
very big table and all take a seat, with the lawyers at the
head of the table. Glory's lawyer is Mrs Nickle, a small
woman, someone you would trust. The Ferrucci's lawyer is
more up-scale from the big city.

MRS NICKLES
Glory, where is Otto? I thought
he was going to be here.

GLORY
He is on his way here, but the
snowstorm in Chicago held up his
plane. I have his power of
attorney.

MRS NICKLES
I'll have my secretary look for
that.

The lawyers pass papers around the table. The Ferruccis
sign, Glory signs, more and more papers, it is endless.

MRS NICKLES
We don't seem to have the power of
attorney, but you said Otto should
be here tomorrow. He can sign then
and we can still get it to the
courthouse and register it on
time.

INT. LAWYERS OFFICE NEXT DAY - DAY

Otto has arrived to sign the papers. He goes through signing
piles and piles and finally he is finished. He walks out
the front door of the office, kicks up his feet, totally
overjoyed as he shouts.

OTTO
This is a real Merry Christmas for
me. I'm finally free if the inn.

INT. GLORY AND OTTO'S HOUSE - NIGHT

The house is decorated for Christmas, There is now
furniture and it looks wonderful. A party is going on.Many
things that used to be at the inn are not at their house.
All their friends and the people who worked at the inn are
there.

JOHNNY
I envy you Glory, in a way. I'd
love to be able to quit being an
innkeeper. I've been doing it for
over forty years now, ever since I
was born. i don't really know what
I'd do though.

ALANA
I know what I'd do. We'd travel
all over the world, follow the
sun, sleep late and enjoy
ourselves.

GLORY
Now I have to find something else
to do. I'm not sure I can do
anything else. I've been doing
this 24 hours a day for eight
years now.

OTTO
I know I'm going to enjoy myself,
not sharing Glory now. My biggest

though I felt the weight of the

we'll be able to spend some fun
time together. I want to get into
more mystical stuff.

Glory glances down and sees the Sparkles flickering at her
feet.

During the evening people come up and tell Glory they will
continue working at the inn. They are sad that Glory and
Otto are leaving, but they all have wonderful, funny
memories.

GLORY
Johnny, do you remember when your
friend Louie buzzed the inn with
his biplane?

Flashback EXTERIOR OF INN DAY.a biplane is headed toward the
inn, missing it by inches. It pulls up at the last minute
and as it flies away, we see Louie who looks like the Red
Baron, with a scarf flying in the wind. He waves and then
he comes back to buzz the inn again. The guests come running
out of the inn and look up to the sky.

OTTO
I used to love the barbecues on
the lake in winter. I was always
jealous because I didn't have a
snowmobile, we couldn't afford it.

FLASHBACK. DAY EXTERIOR, FROZEN LAKE
People are standing around a campfire on the frozen lake,
cooking hunks of meat. Trucks are parked on the ice and a
car isdriving up. Otto gets out and sets a case of beer in
the snow. Everyone helps themselves. People are racing
snowmobiles, others are cross country skiing.

GLORY
One of my favorite times was the
first time we saw the Northern
Lights. Remember the guests got
us up at midnight to go and see
them?

Flashback EXTERIOR, INN LAWN--NIGHT
People are standing out on the lawn in their robes looking
up at the fantastic Northern lights in the sky.

GLORY
I'm sure life has many more
wonderful things in store for us.

OTTO
(hugging her)
Me too.

INT. INN - DAY

Magurite is moving some personal items upstairs. Glory
follows her.

MRS. FERRUCCI
(Margurite)
Glory, does it seem strange to
have us move in here? How do you
feel?

GLORY
I didn't know how I would feel.
But it is strange, I feel good to
have you here. It was time.

INT. KITCHEN - DAY

Glory helps Margurite in the kitchen.

Margurite looks confused.

GLORY
Don't worry, you'll learn. We
didn't even have a menu when we
began.

INT. OFFICE - DAY

            GLORY
      (handing Reggie
       Ferruci a booklet)
Here's a little booklet I made up
for you. It should cover all the
emergencies. We already looked at
the power connections. Is there
anything else?

MR FERRUCCI
(Reggie)
I'm sure there will be, but after
all you're just across the street.

GLORY
You are right. When we too over
there was nobody to ask. We had to
learn the hard way.

INT. LITTLE WHITE CHURCH - NIGHT

Christmas Eve at the traditional little white New England
Church. The village gathers at the church. The children
perform a nativity scene which always brings hushed giggles.
Mary throws a Jesus doll into the hay, one little boy takes
a can of food that has been left for the poor. The whole
family is there.

MINISTER
This year, we have so much to be
thankful for in our beautiful
valley. The air is still clean,
the mountains are beautiful, the
lakes are here for the asking.
Tomorrow all will be white and
shiny and the kids will be able to
build snowmen. The world is
changing so quickly, but here
where we live, the most important
things we hare exist. The love of
our families and the gifts of
nature, endure. That's the best
gift of all. Merry Christmas to
you all.

EXT. LITTLE WHITE CHURCH - NIGHT

Snow is falling, WE can see the children inside ringing the
bell. They hang on the rope as it goes up and down. The
Ferrucci's are talking with Otto and Glory.

MR FERRUCCI
(Reggie)
I'm sure you want to spend
Christmas with your family, but
why don't you join us for New
Years Eve?

GLORY
Thanks for asking, but to be
truthful I've been waiting for
eight years to be able to go to
sleep at 8:30 on New Years EVE. I
want to get up feeling good the
first day of the year.

INT. GLORY;S HOUSE BEDRROM - DAY

Otto brings Glory coffee in bed on Christmas morning.

GLORY
We really were a success, weren't
we? When we bouth the inn, hardly
anyone knew about it. We brought
a lot of happiness into people's
lives.

OTTO
You're right, what a lot of nerve
we had. Imagine me learning to
cook for that crowd.

GLORY
Yes we were a success.

OTTO
You're right, but now that chapter
is ended. Let's tie it up with an
nice satin ribbon and start a new
chapter. I'm ready for some
quiet.

GLORY
I think I'll appreciate a little
quiet too.

OTTO
Okay, but I know you. I still find
you the most fascinating woman I
know, but you have to understand
it's hard to keep up with you
Glory.

GLORY
Otto, I love you so much and I
hope you know I do appreciate you.
Without you, my adventures
wouldn't be much fun.

EXT. GRACIE'S NEW HOUSE - DAY

Gracie has moved across the road with the family and she has
a new Gracie Mansion. She is sniffing the air.

GLORY
Just wait, Gracie, until after
dinner. You won't have as many
leftovers as you did at the inn,
but it's time you lost a little
weight. We can go walking
together.

Gracie looks at Glory, like she understands. She must weigh
a good 700 pounds now.

INT. DINING ROOM CHRISTMAS DINNER - DAY

The family is sitting around the dining room table at home.
Glory is in her pajamas Only Nancy and Little Otto are
missing. They are in California.

GLORY
Excuse my attire, but I just want
to prove to myself I could really
relax this Christmas.

OTTO
Girls, I can't tell you how nice
it is to think I have your mother
to myself after all these years.
Nothing personal of course.

ANDIE
Dad, we know what you mean. Or
house has always been full, hasn't
it. Mom's been sort of a mother to
the world.

OTTO
Now we'll be able to have time to
walk in the woods, canoe. I'll be
able to watch whatever I want on
television. We can cook for two.
I've waited so long for this.

The three girls look at each other, then get up and walk
into the kitchen.

ANDIE
(whispering)
Maybe we better say something.

THERESA
(and Nancy)
Yes, we'd better too.

They sit back down at the table.

ANDIE
Mom and Dad, I've decided to take
the next semester off from
college. I was sort of hoping I
could stay at home with you. You
know, hang out here, until I
decide what to do with my life.

GLORY
Oh that would be great Andie. I've
missed you so much since you've
been away at college.

THERESA
(coughs)
Mom, Dad, I'm going to have a
baby. I split up with my
boyfriend and I don't have enough
money for rent. I was thinking I
could come home for a while.

GLORY
I'd love having another baby
around her and you too. Little
Otto is so far away.

Otto's eyes are getting bigger by the minute. The phone
rings.

NANCY
Merry Christmas everyone. Guess
what. I'll be home soon, I'm
moving back. Little Otto misses
(MORE)

NANCY (cont'd)
everyone. We should be together.
What are families for?

GLORY
I couldn't think of anything
better.

OTTO
I could.

WE hear a scratching at the door. Glory opens the door and
we see a pretty little female dog. She is bedraggled. She is
wet and covered in snow. Ollie and Timber walk up to her,
their tails wagging.

OTTO
Oh, come on in. Sit down by the
fire and dry off. One more won't
make any difference anyway.

Dinner is all finished and Otto is siting in his big chair.
The fire crackles. He calls to Glory.

OTTO
Come over her girl.

GLORY
Me?

OTTO
Yes, you.

Otto pulls Glory onto his lap and gives her a big kiss and a
hug.

OTTO
I love being alone with you Glory,
but I'm more hooked on seeing that
big smile on your face. So even
though it's gonna seem as though
we are still running an inn again,
one that doesn't even pay for
itself. I love you dearly.

Glory really hugs him.

OTTO
And by the way, did yu know this
was going to happen when you built
this house with so many rooms?

OTTO

The little sparkles light up around Glory's feet, and Glory
turns around and winks at the audience as the CREDITS ROLL.

I wish there was simply a comment feature not tied to a rating. Honestly I can't tell you if this is any good or not. In the first third of a page you've given me five reasons not to read this script. 1. Montage to open 2. Credit sequence 3. "We see" passive voice 4. Camera directions 5. A nine line black chunk of text as description. Unless you're planning on making this yourself it needs a serious facelift. In screenwriting style is as important as content.
