Choosing between the men.

It's been protected. Let's not be asses.

INT. LAUNDROMAT - DAY

The machines whirl in a row, colors with colors, whites with
whites, darks with darks. One machine, filled with colors,
comes to a halt. The glass reflects a woman's face. She
doesn't look up as she inserts more coins. The machine
begins again. Bells jangle as a door opens offscreen. Lydia
turns her head to look up.

                       TEAGUE
It's raining!
      (laughing)
I got caught in a sudden downpour.

Lydia raises her eyebrow in acknowledgement and sits back in
her chair. She pulls a book out of her bag and opens to a
folded page. She smooths it out and begins to read. Teague
looks over her shoulder as he shakes out his umbrella.

                       TEAGUE
Is it good?

                       LYDIA
      (without looking
       up)
Is what good?

                       TEAGUE
Your book.

Lydia looks up at him. A moment of silence passes. Teague
smiles broadly.

                       LYDIA
You can't tell from over my
shoulder?

                       TEAGUE
      (still smiling)
Does it bother you when people do
that?

                       LYDIA
      (turns back to
       book)
No.

Teague folds up his umbrella and hops himself onto the
counter beside Lydia. He hums to himself. Lydia looks up.

2.

                       LYDIA
      (softly)
Claire de Lune.
      (T smiles)
I hate that song.

                       TEAGUE
      (mock serious)
Oh come on.

                       LYDIA
      (short)
I do.

                       TEAGUE
You're not a people person, are
you?

INT. APARTMENT - NIGHT

Lydia is sitting outside on an upturned bucket, smoking. She
has an afghan wrapped around her. The door slides open. She
doesn't turn. Brent stands in the frame.

                       BRENT
You okay?

Lydia nods. She blows out a stream of smoke.

                       BRENT
I brought you some chicken. I'll
be inside. I have paperwork.

Brent leaves, and the partition clangs as it closes. Lydia
flinches. She turns and her eyes are full of moisture.
Turning back, she lights another cigarette with her dying
one.

INT. LAUNDROMAT - DAY

                       TEAGUE
You're not a people person, are
you?

Pause. Lydia smiles to herself.

                       LYDIA
Actually, I am. It's what's
written on my resume.

3.

                       TEAGUE
What do you do?

Pause. Lydia shuts her book and drops it into her bag.

                       LYDIA
Advertising.

                       TEAGUE
Really?

                       LYDIA
No. I design lingerie.

                       TEAGUE
Fascinating.

                       LYDIA
My husband works. We're thinking
of having a baby.

Teague leans into Lydia. He holds her face with one hand and
gently removes an eyelash from her cheek. He holds it in
front of her mouth.

                       TEAGUE
Make a wish.

Lydia blows the eyelash. Another machine comes to a stop.
Whites. They both turn to look, their faces reflected in the
glass.

INT. LAUNDROMAT - DAY

Teague is doing neck rolls. Lydia walks in and watches him.
In midst neck roll, he stops to a head tilt and looks at
her. She has a soda in each hand.

                       LYDIA
      (holds one out)
Got you one.

                       TEAGUE
      (sits up)
I don't drink soda.

Lydia frowns.

                       LYDIA
Who doesn't drink soda?

4.

                       TEAGUE
      (shrugs)
Me. I guess.

                       LYDIA
Hmm. What do you drink, then?

                       TEAGUE
      (grins)
Beer.

Lydia tosses his soda into a nearby trash bin. She opens her
soda and drinks.

                       TEAGUE
Joke.

                       LYDIA
Indeed.

                       TEAGUE
Alright, who says "indeed"?

Lydia can't hide her smile. She shakes her head at him.

                       LYDIA
Me. "I guess."

Teague takes her soda and drinks from it. Lydia watches him.
He doesn't look at her, as he starts to hum again.

INT. KITCHEN - DAY

Lydia is humming "Clair de Lune" as it plays on the stereo.
She is cooking up a storm, creating a mess, and dancing
about the kitchen. Her messy ponytail is powdered with
flour. Her nails are stained orange. She tastes some soup
and wrinkles her nose. The phone rings. Lydia manages to
wrestle the receiver into the ear/neck cradle without her
messy hands.

                       LYDIA
Hello!
      (Smiles wider)
Hi baby! What are you up to?
      (Falters)
Well, when do you think you'll be
home?
      (interrupts)
'Cause I got a surprise for you.
I'll give you a hint. It might
involve a certain apron someone's

5.

                       LYDIA (cont'd)
boyfriend got someone and someone
is finally putting it to use!
      (Pause)
But... you didn't tell me that
before.
      (frowns)
Brent...
      (Long pause)
I understand.

Lydia drops the receiver into her hand. She grips it
tightly, smearing orange onto the handle. Lydia stares at
the stereo. Placing the phone back, she turns off the music.
Something bubbles over and sizzles on the grill. Lydia turns
the stove off. She leaves.

INT. LAUNDROMAT - DAY

Teague is laying on the folding counter. Lydia is moving her
clothes from the washer to the dryer.

                       TEAGUE
I work in children's theatre.

Lydia can't be seen by Teague as she has bent down to insert
quarters into the dryer.

                       TEAGUE
Well, I do lighting boards. I
don't discriminate myself in
children's theatre, but it seems
to be my calling. One job led to
two, two led to four and five...

                       LYDIA
      (amused)
Are you talking to me?

Teague sits up.

                       TEAGUE
Yes.

                       LYDIA
      (gestures at
       dryers)
Sorry. They're loud. I didn't know
you were talking to me.

6.

                       TEAGUE
Oh.
      (looks around)
But you're the only...

                       LYDIA
I bet you talk to yourself alot.
      (tilts head)
I bet you think it's endearing.

                       TEAGUE
Ouch. You've got me all figured
out.

                       LYDIA
      (Points to herself)
People person.

They smile at each other.

                       LYDIA
So you were telling me...?

                       TEAGUE
I was?

                       LYDIA
Earlier. I didn't hear you?

                       TEAGUE
Oh! Yeah. I work in children's
theatre. I do lights.

                       LYDIA
      (nods slow)
Very. Cool.

Teague looks away.

                       TEAGUE
Stop.

INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

Lydia is lying on the couch, watching tv, remote in hand.
She laughs along with laugh track. Brent walks in and stands
near her.

                       BRENT
Lydia.

7.

                       LYDIA
Mmm-hmm.

                       BRENT
What the hell is going on in that
kitchen? It's a fucking mess.

                       LYDIA
      (Pause)
I cooked.

                       BRENT
You have to clean up!

Lydia sits up and frowns at him.

                       BRENT
I can't believe you left things
like that. I can't even find a
clean fork.

                       LYDIA
I didn't use the forks. Brent.

                       BRENT
Look, Lyds, you have to learn to
take some responsibility. I can't
keep cleaning up after you.

Lydia stands up. She stands directly in front of Brent, her
face close to his.

                       LYDIA
      (gritted)
Nobody asked you to.

Lydia leaves. Brent looks after her and shakes his head. He
turns off the television.

INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT

Lydia is sitting on the edge of the bed, brushing her teeth.
Brent is typing on his laptop at his desk.

                       BRENT
      (not looking up)
You should go to bed. I have a
shit load of work to do still.

Lydia walks off screen and we hear water running. She
returns and adjusts her alarm clock. She turns off the room
light.

8.

                       BRENT
      (looking at her)
Jesus, Lyds.

Lydia doesn't look at him. She climbs into bed and settles
herself.

                       LYDIA
      (under covers)
Go outside.

Brent unplugs his laptop and carries it out. Lydia peeks out
and turns a soft-light lamp on. She places her glasses on
and reads a book.

INT. LAUNDROMAT - DAY

Teague is bouncing a rubber ball. Lydia is folding her
laundry and watching. She tries to snatch it away, but
Teague is faster. Lydia starts giggling as she continues to
fight him for the ball. The bell jangles as an elder couple
enters. Lydia watches them. Teague loses control of the ball
and it rolls under a machine.

                       TEAGUE
Marshall!

Teague notices that Lydia is smiling at the couple. He looks
and sees that the old man is loading the laundry and the old
woman is sitting and watching him.

                       TEAGUE
What?

                       LYDIA
      (looks at him)
What?

Teague looks at the couple again and smiles at Lydia.

                       LYDIA
Where's your ball?

                       TEAGUE
Marshall ran away.
      (points under
       machine)
Everyone runs from me.

                       LYDIA
      (smiles)
You named your ball?

9.

                       TEAGUE
      (silly)
I name all my balls.

Lydia laughs out loud. The older woman looks over and
frowns. Lydia checks herself. She finishes folding and
begins to put away her clothes into her hamper.

                       TEAGUE
      (in Lydia's ear)
I think you should tell her that
her husband's fly is down.

                       LYDIA
It is not!

Teague nods seriously.

                       LYDIA
Shut up.

                       TEAGUE
      (smiles)
Okay.

Pause.

                       LYDIA
Have you had lunch?

Teague keeps smiling and shakes his head.

                       LYDIA
Do you like Indian?

Teague nods. He stands up and holds his hand out. Lydia
stands holding her hamper. Teague drops his hand.

                       LYDIA
I know a good place.

Lydia begins walking and Teague follows.

INT. INDIAN CAFE - DAY

AFTERNOON.

                       LYDIA
I've been craving these samosas.
They're, hands down, the best in
the city. Do you want to share?

10.

Teague shrugs.

                       LYDIA
What is this?
      (peers at him)
How long have you not been
speaking?

Teague smiles in answer.

                       LYDIA
You freak of nature. Talk!

                       TEAGUE
Samosas sound great.

                       LYDIA
What was that about? Some symbol
of mystery? It's not sexy.

                       TEAGUE
I think it is.

                       LYDIA
You're a child.

                       TEAGUE
You're cantankerous.

                       LYDIA
      (pause)
Is that... bad?

                       TEAGUE
No.
      (fiddles with fork)
Would it be bad if I said I have a
girlfriend?

                       LYDIA
      (abruptly)
Yes.

                       TEAGUE
      (pointedly)
You have a husband.

                       LYDIA
So?

                       TEAGUE
      (sighs)
Well, I don't. Have a girlfriend.

11.

                       LYDIA
      (smiles and leans
       in)
He's not my husband.

Teague raises his eyebrow.

                       LYDIA
I lied to you.

                       TEAGUE
Why?

                       LYDIA
      (shrugs)
It's fun.

Teague watches her. Lydia peruses her menu, avoiding his
gaze.

EXT. PUBLIC PARK - DAY

Lydia is sitting on the grass, on her coat. She is eating an
egg salad sandwich. She squints through her glasses, her
hair in a bun is falling apart, and her shoes have mud on
the heels.

                       BRENT
      (offscreen)
Heads up!

A soccer ball comes flying at Lydia. It hits her in the
stomach. Her sandwich smashes against her shirt. Brent and a
friend run up to her. They look shocked but amused. They
glance at each other as Lydia slowly tries to brush off her
mess.

                       LYDIA
Shit.

                       BRENT
I'm sorry, ma'am.

Brent's friend gently takes the soccer ball and passes it
offscreen. He follows. Lydia wipes her hands on a part of
the shirt that remains untainted.

                       BRENT
Oh, don't do that.

12.

                       LYDIA
      (scoffs)
You're telling me what to do?

                       BRENT
I really am sorry.

                       LYDIA
      (snaps)
Big whoop.

                       BRENT
      (glances offscreen)
Look, I'd like to help...

Lydia follows his gaze to his friends, who are gesturing at
Brent.

                       LYDIA
      (acidly)
Oh I see. You've ruined my day and
my shirt. But, please. Don't let
me get in the way of your ball
game.

Lydia gets up and tosses the sandwich mess into a trash can.
Brent picks up her coat and brushes the grass and dirt off
of it.

                       BRENT
      (follows)
No, listen. Let me make it up to
you. I feel awful.
      (holds out her
       coat)
I can get you a new shirt, buy you
a new lunch...

                       LYDIA
      (snatches coat)
Oh wow. That would make everything
just fan-fucking-tastic, wouldn't
it? Yeah, you know what? You can
just walk away now, without your
guilt. I'm tickled by your offer
alone.

Brent reaches out and grabs her hand.

                       LYDIA
Let go.

13.

Brent doesn't let go. He walks around to face her. Lydia's
face is stiff but a tear escapes.

                       BRENT
What's your name?

Lydia pulls her hand from him. She begins to walk away.

                       LYDIA
      (softly)
Fuck you.

Lydia walks away and Brent watches her. His friends continue
calling him offscreen. He runs back to them. The ball passes
him when he's watching Lydia, and he runs after it.

EXT. PARKING LOT - DAY

Lydia is at the trunk of her car. It is crammed with
cardboard boxes. She rummages and pulls out a blue wrinkled
button-down. Brent runs into the parking lot, several car
rows over. He looks around urgently. Lydia closes her trunk
and opens her car door. Brent catches a glimpse of her
before she enters her car. He sprints to her. Unfortunately,
he gets to her window just as she has removed her dirty
shirt. He accidently slams against her driver's side window.
She screams.

                       BRENT
Oh crap! No! I'm sorry.

Lydia holds her blue shirt against herself. Brent looks up
to be a gentleman. She recognizes Brent and rolls her window
down a crack.

                       LYDIA
What are you doing?!

Lydia quickly puts on her shirt and buttons it. Brent
continues to gaze up.

                       LYDIA
What, you weren't done humiliating
me?

                       BRENT
Look, I just... I couldn't let you
get away like that.

14.

                       LYDIA
      (peevishly)
I'm dressed.

Brent looks down. Lydia looks impatiently at him.

                       BRENT
I'm not a jerk.

                       LYDIA
Obviously. Look, just stop. I'm
fine.

                       BRENT
Are you?

Lydia throws him a annoyed look.

                       LYDIA
I don't know you.

                       BRENT
      (holds out his
       hand)
I'm Brent.

Lydia lets out a short laugh.

                       LYDIA
We're not doing this.

Brent doesn't move.

                       LYDIA
Brent? It's been a pleasure. I
have to go now.

                       BRENT
      (holds up his hand)
Wait.

Lydia watches him run in front of the car and open the
passenger door. He sits inside and pulls on the seat belt.
Lydia looks horrified.

                       LYDIA
What are you doing?!

                       BRENT
I'm going with.

                       LYDIA
No you are not!

15.

                       BRENT
I am too. We're not done here.

                       LYDIA
We're not doing anything! There is
no "we." I don't know you and
you're not sitting in my car!

                       BRENT
Excuse me. I told you my name was
Brent. And I'm sitting right here.

                       LYDIA
Are you insane?

                       BRENT
No. I'm being responsible.

                       LYDIA
Get out of my car.

                       BRENT
Not yet.

                       LYDIA
I'm going to work. It's 13 blocks
from here. Let's finish playing
this game and save you the walk
back.

                       BRENT
You haven't told me your name.

                       LYDIA
Lydia.

                       BRENT
That's nice.

                       LYDIA
Will you leave now?

                       BRENT
Do you want me to leave?

Lydia swallows and nods.

                       LYDIA
      (quietly)
Please.

Brent pulls the door handle.

16.

                       BRENT
I didn't mean to upset you. I was
trying to... make things right. I
didn't think this through.

Brent stands ouside the car, holding the door open.

                       BRENT
I'm really an okay guy. If you're
ever up to it...

Brent pulls a card from his wallet. He places it on her
dashboard.

                       BRENT
Maybe next time I can run over
your cat or something.

Lydia looks at him.

                       BRENT
Oh no.
      (pause)
You have a cat, don't you.

Lydia opens and closes her mouth. She shakes her head.

                       LYDIA
No.
      (relaxes)
Must be your lucky day.

Brent closes the door. Lydia drives away, as Brent holds up
his hand as a goodbye.

INT. INDIAN CAFE - NIGHT

Teague is leaning back with a tea mug. Lydia is making a
diagram on the table with toothpicks. She works intently and
Teague watches her contentedly.

                       LYDIA
      (frowns)
Who did I say the halves were?

                       TEAGUE
Lydia.

Lydia doesn't look up. She wrinkles her nose.

17.

                       TEAGUE
      (leans in)
Lydia.

Lydia is startled.

                       LYDIA
Yes. I'm sorry.

                       TEAGUE
No. It's... I have to go.
      (indicates out
       window)
It's stopped raining.

                       LYDIA
Oh. Okay. Let me give you a ride.

                       TEAGUE
      (hesitates)
Not today.

Teague stands up and walks around the table. He squats to
face Lydia. He lifts her hand and kisses it. She frowns at
him.

                       TEAGUE
It was a delight to meet you.

Lydia sits back in her chair. Teague stands up. She crosses
her arms in front of herself.

                       LYDIA
Likewise.

Teague leaves. Lydia stares at the table. She snaps the
toothpicks, one by one, into two.

INT. APARTMENT - NIGHT

Lydia walks inside, rifling through mail. She looks up and
sees a large stuffed gorilla on the coffee table. In its
paws is an orchid pot. She walks toward the gorilla. Under
the pot is a envelope labeled "Lydia." She picks it up and
opens it. Inside is a letter.

                       BRENT
      (voice over)
"I thought about last night. I
don't want to fight. I'm sorry I
yelled. I don't have to tell you
how stressed I've been and you've
            (MORE)

18.

                       BRENT (cont'd)
been an angel to be so
understanding. I promise that soon
I'll be able to make it up to you.
I love you. -B"

Lydia folds the letter back into the envelope. She picks up
both orchid and gorilla and walks into the bedroom.

EXT. POOL - DAY

Teague is inside the door looking outside. A woman is
pointing discreetly outside and speaking to him. He speaks
to her affirmatively. He comes out of the doors and strolls
to where Lydia is sitting. She is wearing a black sweater
and jeans. On a patio seat, she is watching the swimmers and
smoking. Teague approaches her and notices that she has been
crying. He hesitates.

                       TEAGUE
Hi.

Lydia looks at him.

                       TEAGUE
You can't smoke in here.

Teague shakes his head sympathetically.

                       LYDIA
Oh god. I'm sorry.

Lydia puts out the cigarette in an empty coffee cup. She
waves the smoke away. Teague nods gratefully. He turns to
leave, but steps back and sits down.

                       TEAGUE
      (conspiratorial)
They told me you had to leave, but
if we make up something good, I
can buy you some time.

                       LYDIA
I must look awful.

                       TEAGUE
      (shakes head)
It's okay. Only- whatever your
pain is, it's palpable.
      (pause)
I would try to hide it.

19.

                       LYDIA
      (miffed)
You don't need to buy me time. I'm
heading out.

Lydia gathers her things and walks out. Teague takes the
coffee cup with the cigarette and and throws it in a garbage
can as he walks away.

INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT

Lydia tosses the gorilla onto the bed. She places the orchid
pot on the desk near the window. There are four other small
pots, two are simply dirt, one has a skeletal branch, and
the fourth is a deformed cactus. She sits on the desk and
strokes an orchid petal.

EXT. POOL PARKING LOT - DAY

Teague is carrying a box to his car. He opens the door and
shoves the box inside. He notices Lydia sitting in the
parking lot, smoking. He closes his door and walks toward
her. She scowls as she notices him approaching.

                       LYDIA
What? Am I not allowed to smoke
out here, too?

                       TEAGUE
      (waits)
Could I bum one?

Lydia observe him, while she pulls a pack from her purse.
She holds it out and Teague takes a cigarette.

                       LYDIA
      (suspicious)
You don't look like a smoker.

Lydia holds out a lighter and Teague leans in to have his
cigarette lit. He takes a whiff and blows it out. He shrugs.

                       TEAGUE
I'll try harder?

Lydia lights another cigarette and places it in her lips.
She pinches the butt in her other hand and flicks it into
the parking lot.

20.

                       LYDIA
Is this a good deed? Like an
overgrown Boy Scout thing? Cause
nothing tragic happened to me.

                       TEAGUE
What happened?

Lydia frowns at his question.

                       LYDIA
I'm such a loser.
      (pause)
My boyfriend and I broke up.

                       TEAGUE
That doesn't make you a loser.

                       LYDIA
It makes me feel like one, which
is effective enough.

Teague observes her while they smoke.

                       TEAGUE
What's your name?

                       LYDIA
Lydia.

Teague raises his eyebrows and turns to look at the
distance.

                       TEAGUE
It suits you.

                       LYDIA
My name?

                       TEAGUE
Yeah. That and- The misery.

Lydia squints to study him. He smiles at last. She relaxes
and laughs.

                       LYDIA
You're right. I'm ridiculous!
      (hesitates)
It's just... never mind.

                       TEAGUE
What?

21.

                       LYDIA
      (sadly)
It's not over for me.

Teague looks over at her. She shakes her head
apologetically.

                       TEAGUE
You'll be fine.

                       LYDIA
      (sincerely)
Thank you.

EXT. ARBORETUM - DAY

Lydia and Brent are walking hand in hand. They both have ice
cream cones. A bike rider sweeps past them. Brent lets go of
Lydia to balance his ice cream. Lydia opens her mouth and
leans forward. Brent gives her a bite of his cone.

                       BRENT
My turn.

Lydia looks at him and then at her cone. She runs away,
laughing.

                       BRENT
Hey, no fair!

                       LYDIA
      (shouts from afar)
Tough. You have to come and take
it from me!

Brent runs after her. Lydia squeals and avoids him. He grabs
her, bites into his cone, holding it in his mouth, and
reaches around for her cone. She twists it out of his way.
In the struggle, Brent loses his cone to the ground.

                       BRENT
Awwww.

                       LYDIA
It's okay. Here.

She hands him her cone and wipes away the ice cream from his
chin with a napkin from her pocket. He kisses her.

                       LYDIA
Ew, Brent. You're sticky.

22.

She finishes wiping his chin. Lydia looks at him fondly. She
takes a bite from the cone in his hand.

                       LYDIA
We can share.

Brent takes a bite and smiles. Lydia wraps her arms around
his neck and kisses him on his cheek.

                       BRENT
Wanna get married?

                       LYDIA
Nope.

                       BRENT
Have a baby?

                       LYDIA
Not a chance.

                       BRENT
What if, you moved in with me?

                       LYDIA
I'm going to smack you.

                       BRENT
      (stronger)
Move in with me.

Lydia observes him. He returns her gaze.

                       LYDIA
Okay.

Pause.

                       BRENT
Oh man. I love you.

                       LYDIA
I love you too.

                       BRENT
      (grins)
Let's go home, then.

                       LYDIA
      (laughs)
Right now?

23.

                       BRENT
Yeah, right now!

                       LYDIA
It doesn't work like that.

                       BRENT
Sure it does.

He grabs her hand and walks her away. She skips to keep up
with him.

INT. APARTMENT - DAY

Lydia is on the phone. She is writing down notes. The door
opens and Brent walks in. His clothes look slept in, but his
eyes are haggard. She notices him and he passes her to enter
the bedroom.

                       LYDIA
      (on phone)
Okay. Thank you very much. I'll
drop by this afternoon.

Lydia frowns to herself and looks at the clock. It reads
8:14 a.m.

INT. BEDROOM - DAY

Lydia stands in the door frame. Brent is passed out on the
bed, in his clothes and a pillow over his head.

                       LYDIA
Did you sleep at the office?

Brent doesn't answer. Lydia walks to the bed. She pulls off
his shoes and places them neatly on the floor. She moves him
to lay straight. He turns over and sleepily looks at her.

                       BRENT
Did you get my present?

Lydia nods. She folds the blanket over him. Brent cups her
cheek with his hand and strokes with a thumb. Lydia moves to
the window and draws the blinds closed.

                       LYDIA
I have inventory.

                       BRENT
Want me to drop off some dinner?

24.

                       LYDIA
It's okay. I'll probably grab
something with Izzy.

Lydia closes the door as she leaves.

INT. FABRIC STORE - DAY

Lydia is crouched, with a ledger book. She counts and marks
carefully. Teague suddenly stands behind her.

                       LYDIA
You think you're cute, don't you.

                       TEAGUE
I have my moments.

Lydia stands and closes her book. She takes off her glasses.

                       LYDIA
Today is not a good day.

                       TEAGUE
When is it ever?

                       LYDIA
Is there something you want?

Teague stuffs his fists into his pockets.

                       TEAGUE
Yes.

Lydia tries to move around Teague. He moves with her to
block her way.

                       LYDIA
I'm tired, Teague.

                       TEAGUE
So am I.

                       LYDIA
      (sharp)
What? What is you want?

                       TEAGUE
Why can't we be normal?

                       LYDIA
I didn't offer you normal.

25.

                       TEAGUE
Why not?

                       LYDIA
You should leave. I'm busy.

                       TEAGUE
Do you ever wonder if I'll walk
out the door and keep going? Does
that scare you at all?

Lydia glances around the store. She walks to the door and
holds it open.

                       LYDIA
Get out.

Teague moves in the opposite direction. He walks through the
"Employee Access Only" door. It slams shut and Lydia jumps
from the noise. She closes her eyes and leans back against
the door. She swallows hard and slowly moves her hand toward
the handle. She moves the lock into place.

INT. STOREROOM - DAY

It is dim. Lydia barely makes in inside, when Teague grabs
her and pushes her against the wall. She gasps as he kisses
her with passionate abandon. She fails to move from his
grip. Teague stops and rubs his head against her. He growls
in frustration and drops his arms. Lydia moves her arms up
to wrap around his head.

                       LYDIA
      (whispers in his
       ear)
I'm sorry. I'm sorry.

Teague removes her hands. He kicks a box hard.

                       LYDIA
      (scared)
Teague!

Teague grabs her face with his hands. He holds it as he
stares at her. She opens her mouth but he shakes his head at
her.

                       TEAGUE
Let me look.

26.

Lydia goes slightly limp but stares back. Teague clenches
his jaw. He releases her. She turns her face. He runs his
hands into his hair and leans his head back.

                       TEAGUE
Probably I love you.

                       LYDIA
Don't.

                       TEAGUE
      (shrugs)
Maybe I don't.

                       LYDIA
Well you can't.
      (crosses her arms)
Are you going to fuck me?

Teague drags his eyes up. Lydia reaches for his jeans. She
undoes them with one quick motion. They fall to the floor,
and Lydia drops to her knees. Teague looks away.

EXT. STREET - NIGHT

Brent is carrying a paper bag and standing on a corner. He
moves his coat collar up and shivers. The light changes and
he walks across the street. Brent is knocked hard when
someone walking the other way bumps him.

                       BRENT
Hey, watch it!

The other man looks over his shoulder and it's Teague. Brent
raises his arms in question. Teague continues on his way
without stopping. Brent looks up at the blinking red hand
and hurries across.

                       BRENT
Asshole.

INT. FABRIC STORE - NIGHT

Brent stands outside the door, peering inside. He knocks on
the door. Lydia, who has been sitting on the floor behind
the counter, pops up. Brent raises the bag. Lydia smoothes
her hair behind her ear. She walks to the door and unlocks
it. She opens it halfway, standing in the space.

                       LYDIA
Hi.

27.

                       BRENT
You haven't had dinner?

                       LYDIA
No. I forgot.

                       BRENT
I know. I ran into Izzy at the
photocopiers.

                       LYDIA
Izzy had to take the day off. Her
professor wrote the wrong name on
her letter and she had to make up
lost time for her apps, and I said
she should...

                       BRENT
      (interrupts)
Hey. I know. She told me.

                       LYDIA
      (pause)
What did you bring me?

Brent opens the bag and Lydia peers inside. Brent kisses her
forehead and she flinches.

                       BRENT
You okay?

                       LYDIA
Yes. Yes, I'm fine. I'm great.

                       BRENT
You look stressed.

                       LYDIA
I am, Brent. I have so much to do.

Brent sighs at her.

                       BRENT
I'm sorry about last night. I
tried to call and my phone ran
out. I was up to my elbows....

                       LYDIA
      (interrupts)
I already figured. You don't need
to explain.
      (pause)
Thanks for this. You're the best.

28.

                       BRENT
I'm going to sit here and watch
you eat.

                       LYDIA
No, Brent. That's not a good idea.
I'm swamped. Why don't you go home
and get some sleep?

                       BRENT
I slept the whole day. I'm fine. I
won't get in your way. I promise.
      (pause)
I just want to spend some time
near you.

                       LYDIA
You're not busy?

                       BRENT
Not right now.

                       LYDIA
      (softly.)
Okay.

Lydia moves aside and Brent walks in. Lydia follows him.
Brent opens the bag and starts piling the containers on the
counter. Lydia sits across from him and picks up a fork. She
glances out the window, but returns to smile at him. He
smiles back and hands her a container.

INT. TEAGUE'S BEDROOM - DAY

Lydia is lying on her back and smoking. She is fully
dressed, with even her shoes on. Teague walks in naked from
the bathroom, toweling his hair.

                       LYDIA
Is it okay that I'm smoking?

                       TEAGUE
Yeah.

Teague lies next to her on his stomach. He props his head on
a pillow.

                       TEAGUE
Tell me how you met.

                       LYDIA
Me and him?

29.

Teague nods. Lydia puts out her cigarette inside a mug. She
turns on her side to face him. She brushes a lock of his
hair back.

                       LYDIA
      (gently)
Why do you want to know that?

                       TEAGUE
I just do. Please?

                       LYDIA
      (takes breath)
I met him in a park. He was
stupid. I was rude.

Lydia lays back on her back and places her hands behind her
head.

                       TEAGUE
That better not be your idea of a
story.

                       LYDIA
      (smiles)
I got kicked out of my apartment.
The day I met him. I had to sleep
in my car for 4 days.
      (laughs)
Actually, what he did at the park,
was kick a ball at me. I was
eating egg salad, it got all over
me, and it smelled in my car
forever. I had to throw the shirt
away. It made me think of him.

Teague twirls her hair around his finger.

                       TEAGUE
What did you do?

Lydia blinks. She sits up abruptly.

                       LYDIA
I called him. We met, fell in
love, and that's all.

Lydia twists her hair up and clips it. Teague sits up and
watches her forlornly.

30.

INT. FABRIC STORE - DAY

Lydia drums her fingers on the counter. She stares at her
cell phone inches from her hand. Determined, she picks it up
and leaves the store through the back.

INT. BACK PARKING LOT - DAY

Lydia opens her car door. She reaches inside for the a card
on the dashboard, wrinkling her nose.

                       LYDIA
      (at smell)
Woof.

She flips the card and it is Brent. She punches a number.

                       LYDIA
Hello? Who I am speaking to?
      (pointedly)
My name is Lydia and we met-
      (falters)
Yes. I-

Lydia wrinkles her face in confusion.

                       LYDIA
I would like to accept amends.

INT. OFFICE - DAY

Brent is on the phone, smiling. He is spinning a pen in his
fingers. A woman knocks on his open door, and he shakes his
head at her. She leaves.

                       BRENT
I'd be glad to. Just name the time
and place.
      (pause)
I'm very glad you called, Lydia.

He writes down some notes on a pad of paper.

                       BRENT
Okay. I'll see you then.

31.

EXT. DEPARTMENT STORE - DAY

Lydia is on her cell phone. She is walking briskly to the
front of the store. There is a small crowd, and she tries to
get a look.

                       LYDIA
      (on phone)
Hang on. There's like 50 people
here. I don't see him yet.

A couple move away leaving a gap for Lydia. Brent is holding
a large poster board, with the words "I was an ASSHOLE and
I'm sorry!" Lydia drops her mouth.

                       LYDIA
      (on phone,
       stammers)
Uh. Um. He- Hey. I gotta go.

Lydia closes her phone and puts it in her pocket. A man
approaches Brent and leans in to speak. Brent shakes his
head. He is seen mouthing "Sorry." Lydia moves in closer. At
her movement, Brent turns and sees her.

                       LYDIA
You ARE insane.

                       BRENT
And I'm sorry for that, too.

Lydia walks up to him and takes the poster board from him.
She looks at it and he watches her.

                       LYDIA
We're practically strangers, you
and I. Do you do this sort of
stunt often?

                       BRENT
No. But you're not a stranger to
me. Is that weird?

                       LYDIA
So weird. Cataclysmically weird.

                       BRENT
Cataclysmically.

                       LYDIA
Very.

32.

Brent smiles. He leans in and stops. He moves toward her ear
instead.

                       BRENT
      (whispers)
Just then, I got the urge to kiss
you. But there's still all these
people around.

Lydia follows his indication at the dwindling yet existant
crowd around them. She turns her head and they are inches
apart. She drops the sign and kisses him. Somebody in the
crowd whoops and others laugh. Lydia stops and blushes.
Brent puts his arm around Lydia.

                       BRENT
Let's get you that shirt.

They walk through the doors and onto the escalator. Lydia
panics. She turns and faces him.

                       LYDIA
We don't need to do this. I made a
mistake. I'm sorry.

                       BRENT
      (furrows eyebrow)
What?

                       LYDIA
What you did, complete accident. I
was angry about something else and
you got the ugly of it. You don't
have to be here.

Brent relaxes. He places his hands on her shoulders and
turns her forward again.

                       BRENT
I'm here. Don't think about the
rest of it.

INT. APARTMENT - DAY

Lydia walks inside. Brent is making food in the kitchen. He
pops out to see and makes an exaggerated face of surpise.
Lydia smiles and shrugs.

                       BRENT
The meeting?

33.

                       LYDIA
Ditched it.

                       BRENT
Nice. Want a grilled cheese?

                       LYDIA
Would love it.

INT. KITCHEN - DAY

Brent butters two slices of bread. He holds his hand above
the skillet to feel the warmth. Lydia moves behind him and
wraps her arms around his stomach. She burrows her face into
his back.

                       LYDIA
      (muffled)
You smell good.

                       BRENT
Thank you. You stink.

Lydia gently smacks his arm. She leans back on the counter
and watches the skillet. There is a comfortable silence.

                       LYDIA
Remember that day- in the
beginning? I made you come out and
buy me a shirt.

                       BRENT
      (smiles)
Yeah?

                       LYDIA
      (earnestly)
What did you think? About me?

                       BRENT
I was crazy about you.

                       LYDIA
Why?

                       BRENT
      (laughs)
I don't know. Why did you call me?

34.

                       LYDIA
      (pause)
I guess I thought I deserved
something.

                       BRENT
I guess I agreed.

                       LYDIA
That easy, huh?

                       BRENT
I'm a simple man.

Brent hands her the sandwich on a plate. Lydia takes a bite
and moans dramatically. Brent laughs.

INT. LAUNDROMAT - DAY

Lydis stands stiffly, staring at the machines. A load of
whites comes to a halt. Lydia is startled by another woman
who rushes by to unload the whites.

                       TEAGUE
      (offscreen)
What a beautiful day.

Lydia turns to see Teague leaning against a machine.

                       LYDIA
I'm out.
      (Pause)
I'm serious.

Teague scoffs. He walks out. Lydia runs to the door.

EXT. STREET - DAY

Lydia squints anxiously against the sun. Teague is jogging
down the street. She slumps dejectedly.

                       LYDIA
      (upset, quiet)
Shit!

EXT. APARTMENT BUILDING - DAY

Lydia is sitting on the steps, her face propped on her
hands. Teague walks up to her.

35.

                       LYDIA
Hi.

                       TEAGUE
Hi.

Teague sits next to her. He stares at the road.

                       LYDIA
Once again, I managed to fuck this
up.

                       TEAGUE
Don't worry about it.

                       LYDIA
What do you mean, don't worry
about it?

Teague shrugs.

                       LYDIA
You don't think I mean it.

                       TEAGUE
It's not the first time.

                       LYDIA
You fucker.

                       TEAGUE
Whatever, Lydia. Do what you do.

                       LYDIA
Teague. I'm done. You and me,
we're through. Please. I'm sorry,
because I know I hurt you and I'm
awful. Believe me, I wish I never
did this to you.

                       TEAGUE
Thanks.

                       LYDIA
No, come on. I meant- God, I had
everything I wanted to say all
here...
      (cups head)
But my mouth just wriggles
everything around and I can't
remember anything I've spoke.

36.

                       TEAGUE
Don't struggle so much. I knew
what this was.

Pause.

                       LYDIA
Teague. I choose him.

Teague stands up.

                       TEAGUE
You know what's wrong here? The
fact that you and me- we should be
together. I know this. You don't
love me. I get that. I get YOU. He
gets to have you, but I. Get. You.

Lydia shakes her head.

                       TEAGUE
      (raises voice)
Yes, goddamnit. I do. I've done
everything you've asked me to. I
play a fucking charade for you
EVERYTIME we get together so you
don't have to face the fact that
your reality is hemorrhaging. I'm
your fantasy man! I do it all,
sweetie.
      (quieter)
Do you think I get a kick out of
this? It stopped being fun long
ago.

                       LYDIA
Please stop talking.

                       TEAGUE
      (gritted teeth)
Lydia. Reconsider.

                       LYDIA
I love Brent. I don't deserve him,
clearly. I don't seem to
understand how to be right to him,
but I can stop being wrong. I have
to stop being wrong.

Lydia stands up.

                       TEAGUE
Why? Why him. Why not me?

37.

                       LYDIA
There is never a why. I love him.
      (pause)
Don't... please don't do anything.
I don't have any right asking
this- but please let me have a
chance. I'm going to need all my
strength as it is, I don't want to
have to deal with more
complications. Can I trust you?

                       TEAGUE
You have absolutely no respect for
me. Do you?

Teague walks up the stairs.

                       LYDIA
      (calls after him)
I trust you!

EXT. APARTMENT - DAY

Brent is sitting on the sofa, reading the newspaper. Lydia
walks in, with a coffee mug, and sits on his lap.

                       BRENT
Hey baby.

                       LYDIA
      (giddy)
I'm feeling very good today.

                       BRENT
      (surprised)
That's good. That's real good!

                       LYDIA
Let's go do something.

                       BRENT
Like what?

Lydia leans over and flips through the newspaper. He watches
her amused. She stops and points on the page.

                       LYDIA
That.

Brent has never taken his eyes off Lydia.

38.

                       BRENT
You got it.

INT. GAS STATION - DAY

Lydia is pumping gas. Brent returns from the mart and pops a
candy in her mouth. He opens the passenger door and pauses.

                       BRENT
You know I love you?

                       LYDIA
Yes I do.

Brent smiles and sits inside. He closes the door.

                       TEAGUE
      (offscreen)
Lydia.

Lydia whips around to see Teague a few feet away. He looks
as astonished as her. She spits her candy in surprise. She
stops pumping and walks over to him.

                       TEAGUE
I didn't know you'd be here.
      (holds hand up)
Don't worry. This is a
coincidence.

                       LYDIA
Okay.

                       TEAGUE
Is that him? No, wait. I didn't
ask that. I mean, how are you?

                       LYDIA
      (hesitates)
I'm doing good.

                       TEAGUE
Glad to hear it.

                       LYDIA
I'm very happy. Against the odds.

                       TEAGUE
      (quietly)
I'm rooting for you.

39.

                       LYDIA
Bye.

Lydia walks back and returns the gas nozzle. She pushes for
her receipt and gets back in the car.

INT. CAR - DAY

                       BRENT
Who is that?

                       LYDIA
Some guy I know.
      (glances at Brent)
From work. A delivery guy.

                       BRENT
He thinks you're hot.

                       LYDIA
      (frowns)
What?

                       BRENT
He was giving you the once-over.
Look.

Brent moves his head in Teague's direction and Lydia sees
that Teague is still watching her. She scowls and starts the
engine.

                       LYDIA
He's a creep.

                       BRENT
Lydia. Be nice.

                       LYDIA
I'm nice. I'm nice to you.

                       BRENT
Not always you aren't. Don't sulk.

                       LYDIA
I don't care. I don't have to be
nice to anyone but you today.

                       BRENT
No complaints here.

Brent leans back in his seat and pops on his sunshades.

40.

INT. COFFEESHOP - DAY

Teague is sitting at a table, reading a book. Two styrofoam
cups are steaming in front of him. He doesn't notice Lydia
until she sits down. He smiles at her and closes the book.
He leans over to kiss her. She quickly complies.

                       TEAGUE
I couldn't remember if you liked
macchiato or mocha. I got both.
I'll drink the other one.

                       LYDIA
Macchiato. Thanks.

                       TEAGUE
Uh oh.

                       LYDIA
      (sips)
What?

                       TEAGUE
You tell me.

                       LYDIA
How do you do that?
      (pause)
There's literally no way I can do
this without feeling like shit.

                       TEAGUE
Are you okay?

Lydia does a double take at his words.

                       LYDIA
It figures.
      (sighs)
No, Teague. I'm not okay. I'm
royally fucked up. And I'm about
to make you not okay.

                       TEAGUE
Are you finished with me?

Lydia grabs his hands.

41.

                       LYDIA
I honestly did not plan this. I
don't know why I'm doing it, even.
I just- I have to.
      (pause)
It's not about you.

                       TEAGUE
      (calm)
The hell it's not.

                       LYDIA
The thing I had before. Before
you? I thought I lost it. I got a
second chance. It's not over.
      (looks down at
       coffee)
I don't want it to be over.

                       TEAGUE
I know the feeling.

Lydia clenches her cup.

                       LYDIA
I'm unbelievable, I know. Go
ahead. You can yell, or throw
things, or whatever you want.

                       TEAGUE
Are you seriously giving me
permission? To give vent to my own
feelings?

Pause. Lydia looks up at him.

                       LYDIA
      (tentatively)
What are your feelings?

                       TEAGUE
Give me a second.

Lydia watches him. Teague frowns and looks outside. He drums
his fingers on the table.

                       LYDIA
This is lame, but I guess I was
hoping that you were going to be
relieved.

Teague doesn't respond. Lydia fidgets with her shirt.

42.

                       TEAGUE
Why is that?

                       LYDIA
I'm used to it. I have a short
shelf life.

                       TEAGUE
Is that what happened with this
guy?

                       LYDIA
Oh no. No. It was me. I thought he
wanted me to go away, so I did.
Without explaining things.
      (pause)
He's innocent. I'm the criminal
for all scenarios.

                       TEAGUE
      (wry)
I did not prepare myself for this.

                       LYDIA
You don't have to be this
understanding.

Teague frowns at her.

                       TEAGUE
Just relax.

                       LYDIA
I'm sorry! I just... you're not
doing anything. It's making me
nervous.

                       TEAGUE
What ought I be doing?

                       LYDIA
Anything.

                       TEAGUE
Are you afraid of me?

                       LYDIA
Yes. I don't know why.

                       TEAGUE
Have I scared you before? Do I act
fearsome?

43.

                       LYDIA
I take it back. I think the shame
of my actions is eating at me.

Teague starts laughing. He pounds the table with his fists
and startles the baristas. Lydia mouths "I'm sorry" to them.
She turns back to Teague who throws his head back and
laughs.

                       TEAGUE
      (gasping)
It's quite the matyr you've
painted. Kudos.
      (claps)
Did you practice in front of the
mirror?

                       LYDIA
      (winces)
Stop it.

                       TEAGUE
      (stops laughing)
Look, Lydia. We're not even that
serious. You're not that important
to me.

Lydia flinches. Teague notices and relaxes.

                       TEAGUE
Of course, I was getting there. I
was...
      (trails off)
Your timing works out. I guess
this is best time for you to
derail.

                       LYDIA
Teague, I don't want you to think
that I was just killing time with
you.

                       TEAGUE
But you were. I was the time in
between.

                       LYDIA
      (pleading)
Please understand.

                       TEAGUE
I understand.
      (lightly)

44.

                       TEAGUE (cont'd)
I was momentarily hurt. Blow to
the ego and whatnot.
      (pause)
Any chance, that in the future...?

Lydia opens her mouth to speak.

                       TEAGUE
      (cuts her off)
You know what? Never mind. The
answer to that doesn't lie with
us.

                       LYDIA
      (carefully)
I'm not going to waste your time.
Like you said, I'm not that
important.

Teague wrinkles his eyes.

                       TEAGUE
Don't listen to me. I shouldn't
have said that.
      (forced)
You ARE important. Don't let a
bastard like me tell you any
different.

Teague stands up and hesitates.

                       TEAGUE
If you decide you need anything,
I'm okay with that.

Teague leaves. Lydia slowly drops her chin into the curve of
her arm on the table. She shuts her eyes.

INT. FABRIC STORE - DAY

Lydia is ringing up a purchase. She hands the customer a bag
and smiles. Following them out with her eyes, she sees Brent
standing at the door. He is standing with his hands in his
pockets. When the customer leaves, he enters. He holds his
hands up and shrugs.

                       BRENT
I didn't bring you anything.
      (pause)
I woke up this morning and headed
over. I walked.

45.

Brent gestures with his hands and avoids looking at her.

                       BRENT
I circled around this block 4
times. I looked deranged,
muttering to myself.

                       LYDIA
What were you saying?

                       BRENT
      (continues)
It came down to this. This isn't
how we end.

                       LYDIA
Brent?

                       BRENT
Why did you leave?

                       LYDIA
I...
      (pause while
       breathing)
Let's discuss this later.

                       BRENT
I'm not moving until you tell me.

Brent sits on the ground. Lydia sits on the floor in front
of him.

                       LYDIA
      (lets air out)
14 days in a row I woke up alone.
14 nights, I fell asleep watching
you work or fell asleep waiting up
for you to never call. I got 8
cancelled dates. The one night you
got time off, you spent it with
your friends- to which you never
invited me.

                       BRENT
I'm so sorry.

                       LYDIA
I'm not finished. I know you were,
are sorry. You said so then, too.
But what does sorry bring me?
      (pause)
I always wanted you. But I
            (MORE)

46.

                       LYDIA (cont'd)
realized I didn't have you even if
I stayed. Maybe a stronger girl
could have done things
differently.

                       BRENT
Come back.

                       LYDIA
      (holds back tears)
I can't. Brent- nothing will have
changed.

                       BRENT
Yes it will. We'll do it together.
I promise.

                       LYDIA
      (crying)
Don't. Don't promise. I can't
change my mind.

                       BRENT
      (tenderly)
Look at me.

Lydia lifts her eyes. Brent hooks her fingers with his. He
mouths "Please?" Lydia gulps and cries as he reaches out to
hold her.

                       BRENT
Leave it to me. Just come back.
I'll do everything.
      (smooths her back)
Just don't leave me again and I'll
do anything you want.

                       LYDIA
      (quietly)
Give me your word.

Lydia sits up and Brent looks into her eyes.

                       BRENT
      (emphasized)
I give you my word.

INT. HOTEL ROOM - DAY

Brent is laying on his back and has his arm around Lydia,
who is wrapped around him. They're entwined in sheets and
little else.

47.

                       BRENT
I should give the office a ring.

                       LYDIA
      (childishly)
No.
      (grips tighter)
You're mine.

Brent laughs and pulls his arm out. He kisses her forehead.

                       BRENT
I'm yours. Just let me tell the
rest of the world I've gone off
the map.

Brent reaches for his cell phone and begins to dial. Lydia
grabs the phone from him and throws it onto a pile of
clothes near the bed.

                       BRENT
      (angry)
Lydia!

                       LYDIA
This is how you go off the map.
You simply stop existing.

Brent softens his glare at her. He glances at the phone. He
turns back to her with a mischievous grin.

                       BRENT
Alright, Miss Lydia.
      (growls)
Come here.

He lunges at her. Lydia shrieks and jumps off the bed,
dragging the sheets with her. She runs to the bathroom and
Brent runs after her. He shuts the door. Offscreen are the
sounds of giggling and kissing.

INT. HOTEL ROOM - DAY

LATE AFTERNOON

Lydia is lying in bed, her eyes closed and looking peaceful.
The sounds of a conversation are faintly heard offscreen.
She opens her eyes. Wrapping the comforter around herself,
she walks to the window. Swiftly she opens the curtain.
Brent is outside, talking on his phone. She watches for a
moment. She closes the curtain again, slower. Lydia climbs

48.

back into bed and closes her eyes. A little while after,
Brent opens the door quietly. He walks over to Lydia and
leans over to see her asleep. He smiles.

                       BRENT
Lydia. Wake up.

Lydia opens her eyes and rubs them. She looks at Brent.

                       BRENT
I got you something.

He reaches in his pocket and holds up his fist. He opens his
fingers and a keychain drops, swinging on his thumb. Lydia
takes it and reads "Love is like Red Swiss Cheese." with a
logo of white bubbles against a red background.

                       BRENT
      (chuckles)
I have no freaking clue what it
means.

                       LYDIA
Thank you.

Lydia fingers the keychain. Suddenly she sits up and kisses
him deeply, holding him against herself. She lets go.

                       BRENT
Wow. What was that for?

Lydia smiles.

                       BRENT
FAN-tastic. More, please.

He climbs on her and kisses her various parts of her body.
Lydia wriggles in enjoyment. When Brent is kissing her knees
away from her view, she drops her smile. She tries to move
Brent away from her.

                       BRENT
      (sighs)
Let's never go back.

Lydia frantically pushes him. Brent sits up and stares at
her. Lydia is crying and kicking away the sheets.

                       LYDIA
Move. MOVE!

                       BRENT
      (alarmed)
What's wrong?

49.

Lydia clutches her waist and bends over, her head on the
bed. Brent touches her arm and she swats him away.

                       LYDIA
      (hoarse)
Don't touch me!

Brent moves back. Lydia moans and crawls off the bed. She
escapes to the bathroom. The door is ajar and we see her
hugging the porcelain. She is sobbing through her retches.
Brent opens the door and squats next to her.

INT. HOTEL BATHROOM - DAY

LATE AFTERNOON

                       BRENT
      (softly)
What can I do for you?

Lydia spits. Brent rolls off some toilet tissue and hands it
to her. She wipes her mouth and hiccups.

                       LYDIA
      (struggling)
Can I be alone right now?

                       BRENT
Okay. I'll be outside. Just call
me if you need me.

Brent closes the door. Lydia tosses the tissue into the
toilet and flushes.

INT. HOTEL ROOM - NIGHT

Brent is watching television, muted. The bathroom door
opens. Lydia is wrapped in a towel and steam permeates the
room. Lydia paws the ground, embarrassed.

                       BRENT
Hey, beautiful.

                       LYDIA
      (thickly)
I got sick.

                       BRENT
I know.
      (pause)
Do I need to take you to a doctor?

50.

Lydia moves into the room and sits on the ground near him.
She shakes her head and drops it into his lap. He strokes
her hair.

                       LYDIA
Nuh uh.

                       BRENT
Okay. Come lie in bed.

                       LYDIA
I'm still wet.

                       BRENT
I don't mind.

Lydia slips in the sheets. Brent moves her hair from under
her neck to on top of the pillow as Lydia readjusts her head
accordingly. He reaches for the remote, but Lydia stops him
with her hand.

                       LYDIA
Leave it on.

                       BRENT
Do you want the sound?

                       LYDIA
No.

They lie together, watching the television. Brent is still
on top of the sheets.

INT. DRUG STORE AISLE - NIGHT

Lydia is in the feminine product aisle. She is holding a box
of tampons. Another lady is in the aisle, talking loudly on
her cell phone. Lydia takes furtive glances at her, while
looking over the section. The lady finally leaves and Lydia
grabs a pregnancy test off a shelf. She holds the tampons
over the test to conceal it.

INT. DRUG STORE FRONT - NIGHT

Lydia is next in line, when an elderly woman stands behind
her. Lydia moves to the magazine rack.

                       LYDIA
Go ahead.

51.

The lady nods and moves ahead in line. Lydia studies the
magazines. When the elderly lady is finished, Lydia places
her boxes on the moving counter. Fumbling for her wallet,
she doesn't look up at the cashier who is indifferent. Lydia
hands over a 20 dollar bill. The cashier gives her the red
plastic bag and her change.

                       LYDIA
      (mumbles)
Thank you.

Lydia darts out of the store.

INT. BATHROOM - NIGHT

Lydia enters and locks the door behind her. She places the
plastic bag in front of her. She pulls out the boxes and
lays them on the counter. Staring at her reflection, she
grips the boxes, wrinkling the cardboard. Swiftly, she dumps
them back in the bag and ties it tightly. She opens under
the kitchen sink and throws the bag deep inside. She turns
on the water and splashes her face. She raises her dripping
eyes to the mirror. With a wet hand, she smears the mirror,
blurring her image.

INT. POOL LOCKER ROOM - DAY

Teague opens a locker and pulls off his cap. He wrings it
out. He pulls his goggles over his head, but the rubber
snags his hair. Lydia appears behind the locker, business
attired and holding her purse.

                       TEAGUE
      (rubbing his head)
Ah.

                       LYDIA
Is this a bad time?

Teague jumps at hearing her and slams the locker on his
finger.

                       TEAGUE
OW!

                       LYDIA
Oops.

                       TEAGUE
What are you doing here?

52.

                       LYDIA
      (playfully)
I was in the neighborhood.

Teague examines his hand. He closes his locker properly. He
clangs the lock slide.

                       TEAGUE
      (Hard)
How's your boyfriend?

                       LYDIA
      (amused)
Brent?
      (coy)
I'm not here to talk about him.

                       TEAGUE
Oh yeah?

Lydia raises her eyebrow. Teague's skeptical frown melts
into a small smile.

                       TEAGUE
You've got some nerve. I give you
that.

INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT

Lydia is sitting, cross legged on the bed. She is staring at
the wall. Her cell phone rings and scares her.

                       LYDIA
      (yelps)
Oh!

She reaches for her purse on the floor and rustles for the
phone. She finds it and clicks it on.

                       LYDIA
Yes!
      (softer)
Sorry. You scared me.
      (pause)
Scary movie. Tonight? Yeah, no.
It's okay.
      (Pause)
I have stuff to do anyway.

Lydia turns her head toward the bathroom.

                       LYDIA

                       LYDIA
Well?

                       TEAGUE
Well what? You're crazy.

                       LYDIA
Is that a no?

                       TEAGUE
      (sighs)
No.

Teague ruffles his own hair.

                       TEAGUE
      (accusatory)
Why should I do this?

Lydia leans back.

                       LYDIA
      (matter of fact)
Because you will.

                       TEAGUE
I'm not that hard up, Lydia. I'm a
pretty remarkable fellow myself.

                       LYDIA
      (significantly)
I know.

INT. BATHROOM - NIGHT

Lydia is sitting in the tub. She takes a cigarette pack from

and turns it on. She pulls the shower switch, and the water

                       LYDIA
Shit.

The doors close and Lydia leans back against the wall. She
closes her eyes and wrinkles her face in pain.

INT. TEAGUE'S BEDROOM - NIGHT

Teague is watching Lydia dress. She looks over her shoulder.

                       TEAGUE
How did I agree to this?

                       LYDIA
You can back out still.

Teague tucks his hands under his head.

                       TEAGUE
Is it always going to be the same?

                       LYDIA
Yes. I told you the rules.

                       TEAGUE
You're being very careful, aren't
you?

Lydia leans over to put on her shoes.

55.

                       LYDIA
I enjoy being careful.

Lydia is sleeping on the couch, covered in an afghan and
curled up. The television is on. The shades are closed.
Brent sits on the arm of the couch. Startled, Lydia wakes
up.

                       BRENT
Baby, what are you doing out here?

                       LYDIA
      (groggy)
I couldn't sleep. I think I better
call in sick.
      (pause)
What time is it?

                       BRENT
I don't know. I just got up.

Lydia groans and pulls the afghan over her head.

                       BRENT
Do you want me to call someone to
open up?

                       LYDIA
      (muffled)
No. I'll take care of it.

                       BRENT
Okay. I'm going to go get ready.

Lydia doesn't answer or move.

INT. LIVING ROOM - DAY

Lydia picks up the phone. She holds it to her ear. Losing
nerve, she places it back. Immediately she picks it up again
and punches a few digits. She hangs up again and stands up.

                       LYDIA
Do it!

56.

Staring at the phone, she grabs it and hits the buttons. She
holds onto the chair with her other hand.

                       LYDIA
Pick up pick up pick up.
      (makes frustrated
       sound)
Uh... hi. It's Lydia. This is
important. I'll call again.

Lydia hangs up and puts both her hands on her mouth. She
grabs a sweater and leaves.

EXT. POOL - DAY

Teague is in the water with a child. He demonstrates an arm
movement and then pushes her off. He ducks under the water
and rises to see Lydia standing above him. He chokes and
coughs.

                       TEAGUE
      (recovering)
Holy...! You scared me.

                       LYDIA
      (harried)
I left you a message.

                       TEAGUE
When?

                       LYDIA
      (pause)
Forty minutes ago.

Teague lifts himself out of the water. He stands next to
her.

                       TEAGUE
Are you having a nervous
breakdown?

                       LYDIA
      (urgently)
I need to talk to you.

Teague looks over at the girl in the water.

                       TEAGUE
      (hisses)
You should learn some moderation.

57.

                       LYDIA
Teague. This is serious.

                       TEAGUE
I bet it is!

                       LYDIA
NO. You don't understand.

Lydia walks away. Teague watches her leave. He purses his
lips. He turns back to the girl, who is bobbing in the water
at the other end.

                       TEAGUE
Again, Trischa!

Teague flicks into the water and begins rapid freestyle
strokes.

EXT. POOL LOBBY - DAY

Lydia watches Teague cross the lobby towards her. He raises
his hand at someone she can't see. She bites her lip. He
approaches her.

                       TEAGUE
You have 12 minutes.

                       LYDIA
I'm pregnant.

Teague's jaw drops.

                       TEAGUE
Holy fuck, woman.

He stumbles to sit.

                       LYDIA
I'm sorry. I meant to say
something else first. It just
slipped. But I am.
      (shallow breathing)
I'm pregnant.

Teague drops his head into his hands.

                       TEAGUE
Are you here cause you think it's
mine?

58.

                       LYDIA
No.
      (Teague raises his
       head)
I don't know. It's a possibility.

                       TEAGUE
No it's not.

Lydia startles.

                       TEAGUE
      (shakes head)
It's not mine.

                       LYDIA
How do you know?

                       TEAGUE
I fuck blanks. Don't fret. What
you have there is the genuine
article.
      (pause)
Not the sloppy seconds.

Lydia frowns to herself.

                       LYDIA
Are you sure? Don't mess with me.

                       TEAGUE
Trust me.
      (pause)
Congratulations.

                       LYDIA
I'm sorry.

                       TEAGUE
No need. This is what you wanted,
right?

Lydia swallows.

                       TEAGUE
I better go. I'm happy for you.

He leans his palm on her head for a moment before leaving.
Lydia watches him walk away. She makes a slight movement,
frowning.

59.

INT. APARTMENT - DAY

Lydia is sitting at the table, sipping out of a mug. She
watches Brent who is typing at his laptop on the sofa. She
puts the mug down and clears her throat.

                       LYDIA
Tea...Brent.

Lydia blushes at her mistake. Brent has not looked up.

                       BRENT
Mmm?

                       LYDIA
      (quickly)
Nothing. Never mind.

She drinks to hide her face with the mug.

                       BRENT
      (absently)
I'll wrap it up soon. I promise.
      (Long pause)
Are you feeling better?

                       LYDIA
What?

Brent looks up, smiling.

                       BRENT
I've been worried about you. Are
you sick?

                       LYDIA
No. I'm fine.

                       BRENT
That's good.

Brent returns to typing. Lydia pulls at a hangnail.

                       LYDIA
      (blurts)
What about babies?

Lydia makes a face at her outburst. Brent looks up
immediately.

                       BRENT
What... about babies?

60.

                       LYDIA
Brent. I might be pregnant.

Brent looks at her. He closes what he is working on and
shuts the laptop. He walks over to the table and sits across
from her.

                       BRENT
Explain how you might be pregnant.

                       LYDIA
Actually, I am.
      (to herself)
I suck at this.

                       BRENT
You are?

Brent looks at her with wonder. Lydia scratches her eyebrow.

                       LYDIA
Yes. And it's yours.

                       BRENT
      (happily)
Well duh!

                       LYDIA
      (relieved)
Yeah. What a stupid thing to say.

Brent gets up and grabs Lydia's arms. He moves them around
and he does a silly over-the-top dance. He hums a broken
tune and continues to move about in a joyous manner.

                       BRENT
Na na na na la na na... gonna have
a baby... la ba ba da.

Lydia laughs as he picks her up and dances her around.

                       LYDIA
Let me down!

Brent ignores her as he sings louder and bounces her around.
Lydia laughs more.

INT. RESTUARANT - DAY

Lydia is waiting in the front. Brent comes from the restroom
hallway.

61.

                       BRENT
Ready?

Lydia holds up her empty hands.

                       LYDIA
Not quite. I think your veal is
taking awhile.

Brent sits on a chair and picks up a menu. He flips through
it idly. Lydia cranes her neck toward the kitchen.

                       LYDIA
Maybe I should ask someone...

                       BRENT
      (briskly)
Let's get married.

Lydia turns, her eyes wide but stern.

                       LYDIA
      (warningly)
Brent...

                       BRENT
We should! Don't you think? I'm
sure about this, Lydia! I-

The waitress returns and hands Lydia a large paper bag.
Brent shuts his mouth. Lydia throws him a glare and Brent
opens the door for her.

INT. CAR - NIGHT

Brent is driving and tosses a few glances at Lydia. She is
frowning and staring ahead.

INT. APARTMENT - NIGHT

Lydia walks in first and dumps the bag on the table. She
rips it open and starts to take out the contents. Brent sits
at the table. He folds his hands over each other and leans
his chin on them.

                       BRENT
I'm an idiot.

Lydia slides a container to him. She sits in her chair and
opens her container.

62.

                       BRENT
I should have done it right. Fuck.
I didn't even get you a ring or...

Brent dashes off to the kitchen. Lydia waits. He returns and
kneels next to her. He takes her hand and unfolds a fist to
reveal a garbage bag twist-tie. He wraps it around her ring
finger.

                       BRENT
Will you marry me?

Brent looks up adoringly at Lydia. She closes her eyes and
runs her hand across her forehead.

                       LYDIA
Brent. You're adorable. I love
you.
      (pause)
I'm not sure I'm ready.

                       BRENT
Yes you are.

                       LYDIA
      (snaps)
You saying it doesn't make it so!

Brent retreats, hurt. She makes an "O" with her mouth. She
shakes her head and reaches for him. He doesn't move while
she clutches him tightly.

                       LYDIA
I'm so sorry. I'm in beyond my
ken.
      (pause)
Please forgive me.

                       BRENT
Is it that you don't want to marry
me?

                       LYDIA
      (determined)
No. If I decided to marry, I could
only imagine myself with you. It's
the truth.

                       BRENT
Marry me Lydia.

                       LYDIA
Give me time.

63.

                       BRENT
      (eagerly)
Marry me now!

                       LYDIA
      (exasperated)
Brent, you're pressuring me. I
can't make this decision now.

                       BRENT
      (agitated)
So when will you make the
decision? I've been waiting for
nearly a year. How long is the
baby going to wait? Huh?

                       LYDIA
      (shocked)
That's- not fair! I told you! I'll
be ready when I'm ready. I'll tell
you when that happens. Don't push
me!

                       BRENT
This baby is going to need a
father.

                       LYDIA
      (shouts)
What? If I don't marry you, I
don't have you as the father? Are
you going to leave me?

Brent stands and walks out. The door slams. Lydia sits in
shock. She looks down at her finger, wrapped in white. She
cries.

INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT

Lydia is sitting in bed, her legs under the covers. It is
dark. The door opens and shuts offscreen. Lydia looks up at
the door. She waits. When no one enters, Lydia walks to the
door.

INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

Brent is laying on the couch, his hand covering his eyes.
Lydia opens the door and peers out. Brent doesn't move.

64.

                       BRENT
I just want to sleep. We'll talk
about it tomorrow.

Lydia retreats and closes the door.

INT. LIVING ROOM - DAY

LATE AFTERNOON

Lydia is throwing away the leftovers from the abandoned
dinner. She drops a fork on the ground and leans over to
pick it up. Her hair falls into her face. Her hands are
dirty and she tries to flip the hair away. She stands and
walks into the bedroom.

INT. BEDROOM - DAY

LATE AFTERNOON

Lydia walks in from the bathroom, wiping her hands on a
washcloth. She opens a drawer and rummages. She finds a
hairtie and pulls her hair back into a ponytail. She starts
to close the drawer, but stops. The drawer contains hair
pins, a small album, condoms, tweezers, nail polish, and
various other toiletries. She frowns. Lydia slams the drawer
shut.

EXT. APARTMENT BUILDING - NIGHT

Lydia runs from the street up the steps. She runs her finger
down the intercom listings. She presses the buttons.

                       TEAGUE
      (on intercom)
Who is it?

                       LYDIA
Open the door.

                       TEAGUE
      (hesitates)
Who is this?

                       LYDIA
      (yells)
Open the door!

There is a pause. The intercom crackles.

65.

                       TEAGUE
      (tense)
I'll be right down.

Lydia paces twice in front of the door, when a man walks out
the front door. She grabs it and enters.

INT. APARTMENT HALLWAY - NIGHT

Teague turns a corner and runs into Lydia.

                       LYDIA
      (yells)
You know it could be yours!

                       TEAGUE
Hey! Calm down.

                       LYDIA
      (sobs)
Why did you lie? Why??

Teague grabs her and pulls her as he walks quickly away.

                       TEAGUE
You need to keep your voice down.

                       LYDIA
Blanks??

                       TEAGUE
Lower your voice!

Lydia wrenches herself away. She stands firm.

                       LYDIA
I told him, Teague!

                       TEAGUE
      (cold)
Told him what exactly?

                       LYDIA
      (gulps)
He thinks it's his baby.
      (pause)
It could be, but-
      (cries)
I wouldn't have said anything if I
thought there was a chance it
might not be! You've RUINED me!

66.

                       TEAGUE
      (cruelly)
You ruined my fun. How did you
figure it out?

Lydia reaches out and slaps him. Teague pushes her against
the wall. He pins her there and looks directly at her.

                       TEAGUE
      (intense, but not
       unkindly)
As far as I'm concerned, I'm not
involved. We took every precaution
and I have no reason to believe
that I'm the father. I told you
what you wanted to hear. You're
carrying Brent's child. It's time
you left me alone.

                       LYDIA
      (fearfully)
But what if we're wrong?

Teague lets go. He stands akimbo. He studies her anew.

                       TEAGUE
That's funny. I never realized
what a little bitch you are.

He turns and speaks as he walks away.

                       TEAGUE
Don't come to me again. No matter
what.

Lydia doubles over and falls to the ground. Teague doesn't
hear or see as he leaves.

INT. EMERGENCY WAITING ROOM - NIGHT

Brent is sitting, watching a father and daughter. The
daughter is crying loudly and the father filling out
paperwork.

                       LYDIA
      (offscreen)
Brent.

Lydia is wavering in front of him. Brent rises in a hurry
and nearly trips himself.

67.

                       BRENT
Are you okay?! They wouldn't let
me come in. Are you okay?

                       LYDIA
      (faintly)
I'm fine.

                       BRENT
      (hesitantly)
Is everything...?

                       LYDIA
      (monotone)
Everything's fine.

Brent closes his eyes. He brings Lydia into his arms and
holds her tightly.

                       LYDIA
      (dispirited)
Could I go home please?

                       BRENT
Lydia, I'm so sorry. I've been the
biggest jerk. It's not going to
happen again. I promise.

Lydia pulls away from him and turns away. Brent catches up
with her.

                       BRENT
Please Lydia. Let me take care of
you.

He wraps his jacket on her. She doesn't slow down, but they
walk together.

INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT

Lydia is standing in the bathroom door, brushing her teeth.
She gags and turns back. She spits and turns on the water
offscreen. Brent passes by holding a large object. Lydia
turns to see Brent setting up a heater next to her side of
the bed.

                       LYDIA
What is that?

Brent grunts as he struggles to get the right angle.

68.

                       BRENT
      (pant)
It's a heater.

                       LYDIA
I don't need a heater.

                       BRENT
It gets cold in here. You can turn
it low and high.
      (pause)
It's just an idea.

Lydia walks over to the bed and sits on the edge. She
touches the heater, running her finger up the grill. She
turns the setting. The heater glows red.

                       LYDIA
      (listlessly)
It's nice. Thank you.

Brent smiles wide. He kisses her quickly on the cheek. He
flips to move behind her and starts to massage her back.

                       BRENT
How's that?

Lydia, faced away from Brent, fights to maintain composure.
She nods and falls to lie on her face. Brent continues to
massage her.

INT. FABRIC STORE - DAY

Lydia is measuring a long bolt of cream wool. She takes
scissors and slices down the length. At the end, she
accidently spears herself in the palm.

                       LYDIA
      (upset)
Oh no.

Her blood spots the wool. She presses the cut with her other
hand. She winces from the pain. She looks up and around.
She spies the first aid box from a shelf. She has to let go
of the cut to reach for the box. The box pulls a bin of
embroidery thread on top of Lydia. She stares at the box in
her hands and the bin, now on the ground. Despite herself,
she starts to laugh softly. She sits on a stool and laughs
at herself.

69.

EXT. PARKING GARAGE - NIGHT

Brent's car pulls in and is about to pull into his space
when the lights reveal Lydia sitting on the divider. The car
squeals to a stop. She looks up and squints at the light.
The window rolls down and Brent sticks his head out.

                       BRENT
Holy fuck, Lyds! I almost killed
you.

She stands and brushes herself off. She moves to the side so
Brent can pull in. He unlocks the door and she gets inside.

INT. CAR - NIGHT

Brent smiles at her. Lydia fails to return the smile. She is
nervous but composed.

                       LYDIA
I need to tell you something. Two
things.

                       BRENT
Okay.

                       LYDIA
The second thing is that I want to
marry you.

Brent brightens. Lydia holds up a palm. It is bandaged
poorly.

                       LYDIA
Wait...

                       BRENT
What's wrong with your hand??

Lydia stares at her hand and realizes.

                       LYDIA
Oh. That. I cut it. It's not
important.

                       BRENT
Are you hurt badly?

He grabs her hand and inspects it. She shakes him off.

                       LYDIA
Brent. Listen to me.

70.

Brent nods, serious.

                       LYDIA
I want to marry you because I love
you and I think we could be very
happy together. Not for any other
reason.

                       BRENT
Honey, that's great...

                       LYDIA
      (interrupts)
But you need to hear some things
before- before you agree to marry
me.
      (pause)
I'm sorry that I have to say these
things, but you deserve to know
what you're getting into with me.

                       BRENT
      (shushing)
Baby, whatever it is, it's okay.

                       LYDIA
      (stern)
Please listen to me.
      (pause)
This baby is yours, Brent. I know
it. I know it more than I could
explain.

Lydia touches her own belly unconciously. Brent's eyes
follow.

                       LYDIA
But -
      (weakly)
I did something bad. I regret what
I did so much. I can't undo it
even in my own mind.

                       BRENT
You're scaring me.

                       LYDIA
      (pause)
Brent. I cheated on you. I slept
with someone else.

Brent startles violently.

71.

                       LYDIA
      (gently)
I'm sorry.

                       BRENT
      (winded)
What?

Lydia wipes away a runaway tear.

                       LYDIA
      (with conviction)
I'll do what it takes to make this
right. I love you.
      (pause)
Please.

Brent moves his head side to side and grips the steering
wheel with white knuckles.

                       BRENT
      (murmurs)
What are you saying? What are you
saying?

                       LYDIA
      (voice breaks)
I promise Brent. We'll weather
this.

                       BRENT
      (growls)
Be quiet!

Brent reaches to open his door. Lydia grabs his arm.

                       LYDIA
Don't go!

Brent turns to her.

                       BRENT
Let go of me.

                       LYDIA
No. I can't do that. Stay.

                       BRENT
Let me go.

                       LYDIA
      (desperate)
I want to marry you.

72.

Brent turns incredulous.

                       BRENT
What is wrong with you?

                       LYDIA
I've been so stupid. I know it.
I'll wait as long as you need.
Just say that I have a chance, and
I'll wait.

                       BRENT
Why?

                       LYDIA
      (cautiously)
Why what?

                       BRENT
      (heavily)
Why did you do this? Cheat on me?

                       LYDIA
I thought. I thought and thought
and thought.
      (burdened)
I hated you. I loved you and I
hated you. I thought you made me
unhappy.

                       BRENT
Then why didn't you just leave?

                       LYDIA
I was a coward. I didn't mean to
hurt you... No, that's not right.
I did. I hurt you because I was
hurt by you.
      (fast)
But I ended up miserable because I
didn't really want to hurt you. I
just wanted to stop hurting.

                       BRENT
      (wearily)
Cut the dramatics.
      (grabs his head
       with both hands)
God, my head hurts.

73.

                       LYDIA
      (bites lip,
       tentatively)
Do you want to go upstairs?

                       BRENT
      (yells)
I never even THOUGHT of doing
something like this to you! All
the time, when we went up and
down, and I was haggard from
dealing with the concept of US.
Still, I never came close to
imaging myself with anyone else.
It wasn't an available choice!

                       LYDIA
      (genuine)
Brent. I am sorry.

                       BRENT
Don't say my name. Don't talk to
me right now. I gotta go.

Brent exits the car. Lydia exhales.

INT. APARTMENT - NIGHT

Lydia opens the door. Brent is standing in front of her. He
has a full backpack and his briefcase on the floor near his
feet. He is staring at the floor and his arms are crossed.

                       LYDIA
      (dejected)
You're leaving.

Brent opens his mouth and closes it. He nods tersely.

                       LYDIA
Are you coming back?

Brent frowns deeper. He picks up his things. Lydia goes
limp. She moves to open the door for him. He turns to look
at her. She doesn't look at him. He leaves.

74.

INT. KITCHEN - DAY

Lydia stands in front of the fridge, holding the door open.
She snaps out of her reverie when the refridgerator grumbles
to life. She reaches in and picks out food items, placing
them on the counter. She closes the fridge and rolls up her
sleeves.

INT. LIVING ROOM - DAY

Lydia settles herself on the couch and turns on the
television. She puts a plate of food on her lap and begins
to eat. At the first bite, she has impressed herself.

INT. KITCHEN - DAY

Lydia puts on her apron and surveys the pile of dishes in
the sink. She inhales. Turning on the water, she dives in.
Grabbing the dish soap, some bubbles float into the air. She
lifts her eyes to follow them. She squeezes the soap again.
No bubbles and she resigns herself to dishes again.

INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT

Lydia is lying in bed, with her lamp on. She has her glasses
on and she is reading. She stops and peers over at her cell
phone. Folding the book over her lap, she opens it and
dials.

                       LYDIA
Hi.
      (pause)
I know.

She rubs her eyes.

                       LYDIA
I just wanted to ask if you needed
anything from the apartment.

There is a long silence and Lydia sinks into the covers. She
listens and drops her head, ashamed.

                       LYDIA
I didn't mean to... Okay.
      (pause)
I quit the shop.
      (sighs)
No, I'm just telling you. It
wasn't meant to.....

75.

She shuts her phone. her eyes shut tight, she rolls her head
and rubs her neck. The phone rings. Lydia looks at the
caller ID. She opens her phone.

                       LYDIA
What?
      (pause)
I won't call again. Alright?

Lydia listens for a moment. Then she shuts her phone again
and places it away. She opens her book and reads.

INT. BEDROOM - DAY

Lydia runs in and tosses her purse on the bed. She runs to
the bathroom and shuts the door. Brent pops out from the
closet and looks around. He sees the purse on the bed. The
toilet flushes behind the door. He looks up at the bathroom
door. Lydia opens the door.

                       LYDIA
      (screams)
AAUUGGHH!

                       BRENT
      (helpfullly)
It's me!

Lydia clutches the door frame.

                       LYDIA
What are you doing here?!

                       BRENT
      (indignant)
I live here.

Lydia drops her eyes and Brent closes his eyes in
embarassment.

                       BRENT
I came to get some clothes.

Pause. Lydia moves to get her purse. She moves to the
doorway, slowly. She turns.

                       LYDIA
I won't get in your way.

She closes the door behind her. Brent sits on the edge of
the bed and clutches his hair.

76.

INT. APARTMENT - NIGHT

Lydia opens the door and walks inside. She turns on the
light and looks around. She is disappointed and tosses her
things on the sofa. She walks to the bedroom.

INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT

Brent is sitting on the bed, looking down. Lydia is startled
but stands quietly in the doorway. Brent looks up.

                       BRENT
Is it alright if I stay here
tonight?

Lydia swallows.

                       LYDIA
Sure. It's your apartment.

Brent spreads his hands on the bed.

                       BRENT
      (quiet)
Our apartment.

He stands up and faces her. She is shaking and can't hold
his gaze. When she drops her face, he lifts it with a
finger. He kisses her.

                       BRENT
I'll make you some dinner.

He leaves. Lydia looks over. She takes deep breaths.

INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

Lydia shuffles in the doorway. Brent is clearing the dishes
away.

                       LYDIA
Are you coming to bed?

Brent stares at the dishes. He rinses his hands.

                       BRENT
Yes.

Lydia nods and turns back to the bedroom.

77.

INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT

Lydia is lying in bed, turned away from the door. Brent
enters and sits on the edge of the bed. He pulls his socks
off.

                       BRENT
I'm not sure what I'm doing here.

Lydia shuts her eyes.

                       BRENT
I love you Lydia. I tried not to.
But I don't know if loving you is
going to make me nice.

                       LYDIA
That's okay. I don't need nice.

Brent lays back in bed. There is a divide between them.

INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

Brent is watching television and eating chips. Lydia is
drawing him in a journal. She looks up at him and studies
once in awhile. Brent turns to look at her.

                       BRENT
      (uncomfortable)
This feels weird.
      (quickly)
Getting drawn.

Lydia doesn't respond but continues sketching. She rubs her
feet against each other. Brent folds the afghan over them
and tucks her in. She looks up and smiles. He smiles back at
her.

INT. GROCERY STORE - NIGHT

Lydia is pushing a nearly empty cart down the aisle. She
notices the people around her, unhappy individuals moping
along.

                       LYDIA
      (to herself)
Bachelor zombies.

Lydia stops and begins to pick out items.

INT. APARTMENT - NIGHT

Lydia enters, struggling with her grocery bags. Brent runs
out from the bedroom. He helps her carry the bags in.

                       BRENT
I didn't know you were going to
get food tonight. I could have
come, too.

                       LYDIA
It's nothing. I got hungry.
      (gentle)
You were busy.
      (smiles)
I like it.

Brent looks at her, but Lydia turns away to put away the
groceries.

INT. BEDROOM - DAY

Lydia wakes up in bed alone. She stretches under the covers
and turns her alarm off. She tosses the sheets off her and
sits up. Looking down, she frowns. She wriggles about.

                       LYDIA
      (dreadful)
No. No. No no no.

Lydia goes limp. She cries and clutches the sheets with her
fists.

                       LYDIA
NO. No.
      (shakes head)
God, no. No! No, please, no.

Lydia cries harder and her sobs wrack her body.

INT. BATHROOM - DAY

Lydia's eyes are puffy. Her expression is void. She is
sitting on the toilet, peeing. She turns to see herself in
the mirror. She narrows her eyes.

INT. BEDROOM - DAY

Lydia stands in the bathroom doorway and her eyes sweep the
room.

INT. OFFICE - DAY

Brent is perusing papers, when his cell phone rings. Without
taking his eyes off the page, he answers.

                       BRENT
      (professional)
Good morning. This is Brent
speaking. How may I assist you?

INT. APARTMENT - DAY

Lydia is holding the phone.

                       LYDIA
Brent, it's me.

INT. OFFICE - DAY

                       BRENT
Hey you. Wow. This really isn't a
good time, Lyds.

Pause. He looks up.

                       BRENT
Hello? You there?

INT. APARTMENT - DAY

                       LYDIA
      (stunned)
Yeah. I need you to...

INT. OFFICE - DAY

Brent notices more lines blinking on his phone.

                       BRENT
      (stressed)
Lydia, I'm sorry. Can I call you
back?

INT. APARTMENT - DAY

Lydia straightens up.

80.

                       LYDIA
      (satisfactory)
It's okay. Brent. Never mind.

Lydia hangs up and walks to the window. She opens the
partition to stand on the balcony.

INT. APARTMENT - DAY

AFTERNOON

The phone rings. No one picks it up.

INT. DOCTOR'S OFFICE - DAY

Lydia is sitting on the examination table. She studies a
diagram of a pregnant woman. She touches the baby when the
door opens. She drops her hand. A doctor enters, reading a
chart.

                       DOCTOR
I'm confused, Miss Craig. I'm not
sure why you're here today?

Lydia is staring at the doctor.

                       DOCTOR
Miss Craig?

Lydia frowns and twitches.

                       DOCTOR
Is something the matter?

                       LYDIA
      (surprised)
No.

Lydia blinks and realizes.

                       LYDIA
      (rhetorical)
I'm not pregnant, am I?

The doctor frowns.

                       DOCTOR
Excuse me?

Lydia clutches her sweater tight around her abdomen.

81.

                       LYDIA
I'm not pregnant.

                       DOCTOR
No. I have no record of your being
pregnant.

Lydia nods slightly. She smiles, amazed.

                       LYDIA
      (aware)
I know.
      (pause)
I'm sorry, doctor. I don't need to
be here. Thank you for your time.

Lydia slides off the table. The doctor pulls his glasses
down to look at her. Pause. He hands her the charts in his
hand.

                       DOCTOR
You can tell Nurse Choi this is a
no-charge.

Lydia nods and leaves.

INT. APARTMENT - NIGHT

The phone is ringing. The door opens and Brent enters. He is
on his cell phone, puzzled. He switches on the light and
shuts his phone. The phone stops ringing.

                       BRENT
      (calls out)
Lydia?

Brent pulls at his tie.

                       BRENT
      (louder)
Lydia?

INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT

There is a pile of things on the bed. Amongst them are the
stuffed gorilla, the potted plants, the apron, a jewelry
box, and a set of keys with the "red swiss cheese" keychain.
Brent walks in and turns on the light. He doesn't notice the
things and walks in the bathroom.

82.

INT. BATHROOM - NIGHT

Brent pees in the toilet. He glances over in the trash.
There are two tampon wrappers tucked in on the side. He
widens his eyes. He flushes and zips up his pants. He
reaches in the trash and pulls out the tampon wrappers.

INT. BEDROOM - NIGHT

Brent opens the door in a flurry and notices the array on
the bed. He crosses the room and under the gorilla, he pulls
out a note. It reads "Thank you."

                       BRENT
      (reads out loud)
Thank you?

Taped to the back is a numbered receipt. Under it, on the
note, reads "Sheets are at the cleaner's."

INT. APARTMENT STAIRCASE - DAY

Lydia is carrying a large cardboard box with stuff nearly
spilling over the top. She can barely see in front of her as
she gingerly moves from step to step.

                       LYDIA
      (cautiously)
Steady.

She accidentally bumps into the railing and some cookies in
a Ziplock fly out of the box.

                       LYDIA
      (grunts)
Op! Damn!

Lydia bounces the box to get a better grip.

                       LYDIA
      (cheerful)
It's okay!

She continues down, carefully avoiding the cookies on the
steps. Lydia sets her box down at the bottom of the steps.
She wipes her brow with her sleeve. She picks up the cookies
and sits on the steps. She opens the plastic and bites into
a cookie. She stares at the box in front of her. Suddenly,
she smiles. She pops the rest of the cookie in her mouth and
stuffs the Ziplock into her jean pocket.

83.

                       LYDIA
      (lifts box)
Okay!

Lydia looks up the staircase for a moment. She hefts the box
back in her arms and walks out the door.

Amazing. Wonderfully written. I am SO excited to finally find a fellow writer that understand the proper use of scenes. You know when to use them and when to change them. Wonderful.

That was awesome. Good, strong dialogue, and believable as well. If you have other scripts, I'd love to read them.
