                       MR. JEROME

Edward starts to get restless and kicks his feet up to
remove the blanket. He talks with a slight muffle.

                       MARGARET
Calm down honey before you hurt
yourself. I will help you up.

Edward calms down and Margaret helps him out of bed.

                       EDWARD
I'm tired of this. First my voice
starts to go away and now I don't
even have control of my upper
body.

                       MARGARET
Edward, today is your appointment
with Dr. Spitzer. Once he gives
you a diagnosis, he can fix this.
You'll be good as new in no time.
You just have to have faith.

Edward heads towards the bathroom.

                       EDWARD
He better because I'm tired of not
being able to do anything for
myself. Can you please help me? I
have to use the bathroom.

are sitting. The nurse is a black female with a slim fit
body.

                       NURSE
Mr. Carter, Dr. Spitzer will see
you now.

Edward and Margaret get up and follow the nurse to Dr.
Spitzer's office.

INT. DR. SPITZER'S OFFICE- DAY

The nurse walks into the office followed by Edward and
Margaret.

In the office is Dr. Spitzer. Dr. Spitzer is an Englishman
with white hair and a white mustache. He is medium build and
looks to be in his early sixties. Dr/ Spitzer walks towards
Margaret and Edward. He reaches to shake Edward's hand but
Edward cannot.

                       EDWARD
You will forgive me if I don't
shake. I'm a little tied up for
the moment.

                       DR. SPITZER
I see. Well have a seat.

They all sit down.

                       DR. SPITZER
Well Eddy, from what your test
show and from obvious observations
I have to say that it doesn't look
good.

Margaret looks worried and looks at Edward.

                       EDWARD
Just give it to me straight doc.
What do I have?

4.

                       DR. SPITZER
Well in my opinion you have ALS,
also known as Lou Gehrig's
Disease.

Edward puts his head down.

                       MARGARET
ALS? What is it? Is their a cure
or a treatment.

                       DR. SPITZER
ALS is a progressive disease. We
don't really no the cause of it
and their isn't a cure for it yet.
ALS attacks the motor neurons
which are the cells that tell your
body what to do or what to move. I
t slowly makes your motor neurons
die and the muscle does not
receive the messages which results
in muscle weakness and slowly
progresses into the lose of your
ability to move.

Margaret begins to cry and so does Edward.

                       MARGARET
Oh my God! This can't be
happening!

                       EDWARD
How long do I have until I lose
evrything?

                       DR. SPITZER
I hate to be blunt but some
patients live for many years and
some for some months. As for you,
your progression seems to be
pretty fast. Maybe 2 to 3 years
until you lose all muscle movement
including respiratory.

5.

                       EDWARD
So theirs nothing left to do
except wait?

                       DR. SPITZER
The important thing to do is to
keep hope because this disease
plays with your emotions.

Margaret grabs Edward's hand.

                       DR. SPITZER
We have a multidisciplinary team
here at the University that can
help with the transitions. From
Psychologist to Nutritionist. Eddy
I want you to know that you are
not alone in this. We have support
groups once a month and we all
help as much as we can.

Margaret hugs Edward.

INT. CARTER'S HOME- NIGHT

Margaret and Edward are at the dinner table.

Margaret is feeding Edward some chicken and mashed potatoes.

                       MARGARET
I made chicken fried steak just
the way you like it.

Margaret puts the fork in Edwards mouth and Edward starts
eating his food.

Edward starts to choke on his food.

                       MARGARET
Eddy, what's wrong? You're
choking? Oh my God! Get up!

Margaret starts performing the himleck maneuver. After

several tries Edward spits out his food and passes out.

Margaret runs for the phone and dials 911.

INT. JACKSON MEMORIAL HOSPITAL- NIGHT

Edward is laying in a bed in the hospital. he is wearing a
hospital gown and his wife is sitting next to him. Edward is
asleep.

Dr. Spitzer arrives to Edward's room. He is holding a
clipboard with Edward's information on it.

                       MARGARET
Hello Doctor. Thank you for coming
so quickly.

                       DR. SPITZER
I'm glad I gave you my pager
number. This disease is rare and
not many doctors know what to do.

                       MARGARET
So what happened to Edward has to
do with his condition.

                       DR. SPITZER
Unfortunately yes. You see his
muscles in his throat have become
more weak which didn't allow him
to swallow his food properly.

                       MARGARET
So how is he supposed to eat?

                       DR. SPITZER
There's something called a PEG
tube. The PEG tube can feed him
all of his meds by way of the tube
leading directly into his stomach.
He can no longer eat orally. This
tube will keep him nourished with
all the calories his body needs.
All I need is your consent and we
can get started on it right away.
Your insurance should pay for it
and for the cans of Jevity, which

is the name brand I recommend of
food that goes into the PEG tube.

Margaret looks worried but nods her head as to consent to
placing the PEG tube in Edward.

INT. CARTER'S HOME- DAY

Edward and Margaret are sitting at the kitchen table.
Margaret is just finishing her eggs and bacon with a slice
of toast and some orange juice.

Edward has a full beard and is dressed in his pajamas.
Edward speaks but his speech is slurred do to his vocal
muscles weakening.

                       EDWARD
When you get done with your eggs
and bacon can I have mine? I'm
starving.

Margaret gets up from the table.

                       MARGARET
Yes dear.

Margaret reaches into the pantry which is stocked with
Jevity cans, the cans that feed Edward through the feeding
tube. She takes out 4 cans and walks towards the kitchen
table with a can opener and a funnel to pour the Jevity. She
places all cans on the kitchen table.

                       MARGARET
Here's your eggs, bacon, toast,
and juice.

Margaret starts opening Edwards pajama top to expose the
feeding tube to begin feeding Edward,

                       EDWARD
It's been 3 months and I still
can't get used to not eating
orally. I hope Dr. Spitzer has
some good news when we see him
today.

INT. DR. SPITZER'S OFFICE - DAY

The nurse enters Dr. Spitzer's office with Edward's chart in
hand. Edward and Margaret are sitting in front of the
doctor.

                       DR. SPITZER
Well Edward, talk to me. Let's
here how your voice sounds.

In a slurred speech, Edward talks to the doctor.

                       EDWARD
What do you want me to say?

                       DR. SPITZER
That's all I needed to here? Has
their been any change in your
upper or lower extremities?

Margaret speaks for Edward.

                       MARGARET
No doctor. They have gotten worst
and as you can hear, his speech
has also gotten worst.

Dr. Spitzer reaches into his desk drawer and pulls out a
catalog with medical equipment.

                       DR. SPITZER
We have this company called STAR
Technologies. They have the latest
technological devices to help you
communicate better with everyone.
You might not need it now but when
you do give them a call. Tell them
I sent you and they'll show you
all the wonderful communicating
devices that are out in the market
now. So besides the changes, has
their been a psychological
changes.

9.

                       MARGARET
Dr. Spitzer, Eddy is crazy. Do you
know what he's planning. He's
planning on taking his boat to New
York and back by himself!

Dr. Spitzer becomes upset.

                       DR. SPITZER
That is totally out of the
question! I don't think you grasp
the severity of your condition.
Your safety would be put in harms
way. We are trying to extend you
life not make it shorter!

In a slurred speech, Edward speaks.

                       EDWARD
I don't care. I'm going to do it
with or without your help. So the
question is, are you going to help
me make the proper preparations
for my trip or let me make a
mistake because you don't care
about my safety?

Dr. Spitzer puts a disappointing face.

                       DR. SPITZER
If you're going to do it either
way I might as well help with
whatever I can. The only question
I have is, how are you going to
drive the boat?

EXT. KEY LARGO MARINA - DAY

10.

                       EDWARD
This is a new state of the art
navigation system. I cal it Iron
Mike. All I have to do is plot the
course on the computer and Iron
Mike does all the driving at a
push of a button. What do you
think doc?

                       DR. SPITZER
I didn't even know this type of
technology existed. Edward, let me
tell you I'm still not comfortable
with you taking this trip but I do
wish you all the luck in the
world. I see you have planned this
very well but if you need any help
give me a call.

Dr. Spitzer gives Edward a hug and kisses Margaret on the
cheek.

                       DR. SPITZER
Good luck and see you in a few
months.

                       EDWARD
Yes you will.

able to contribute to your trip.

                       EDWARD
Another one of your schemes?

11.

                       JOHN
It's not a scheme. It's a way for
us to help others with your
condition and spread the word
about ALS.

                       EDWARD
Alright, I'm listening.

                       JOHN

in the nation. Who ever would
listen to us. We set up a
foundation and have them broadcast
to the world about your grand
voyage into the unknown. Think
about it. How many people with ALS
we can help.

                       EDWARD

it. All the revenue and proceeds
will go to the ALS Support

world and myself that just because

that you are and when I get back

                       EDWARD
Captain's log, today is my first
night at sea. It's not bad, my
navigator Iron Mike is doing a
wonderful job. I plan to lower my
anchor in a few minutes to catch
some z's. It's a quite night and I
already miss my beautiful wife
Margaret. Good night to all and I
love you Margaret.

Edward emails his daily log and turns off his laptop.

He heads outside and starts lowering the anchor with a push
of a button.

and smiles. Then Edward heads into the cabin for some sleep.

EXT. ATLANTIC OCEAN - DAY

Edward is awoken by the rocking of the boat. He jumps out of
bed and heads outside to take a look.

                       EDWARD
Bloody hell! It looks like the
anchor slipped and now I'm on a
sand bar.

Edward pulls up the anchor and tries pushing off the sand
bar with a wooden paddle for his inflatable raft. He does
not have strength to do it.

                       EDWARD
Dam it!

Edward pulls a cord and the inflatable raft inflates in the
ocean on top of the sand bar. He ties a rope from the boat
to the raft and takes out a small portable engine and
attaches it to the raft. He gets in the raft and turns on
the portable engine.

Edward starts pulling his boat off of the sand bar.

putting everything back into place. When he is done, he
lowers the anchor and starts to take a look at his
navigation system.

                       EDWARD
Dam! I'm 20 miles off course.

Edward starts typing in new coordinates and then lifts up
the anchor.

"Voyager" is on its way again.

15.

INT. VOYAGER CABIN - NIGHT

Edward is typing away on his laptop emailing his family and
friends.

                       EDWARD
Captain's log, it's been several
weeks since my voyage began and i
don't know what is ahead of me but
I do know that I'm going to go
through with my plans and return
safely into the arms of my wife,
which I miss with all my heart.
I've had some troubles but God and
my will to survive prevailed. I
will be stopping to refuel in the
morning and I can't wait to take a
real shower at a nearby motel then
I'm off to new adventures. Talk to
you all soon. Captain Edward
Carter.

I'll be back in about an hour.

                       GAS STATION ATTENDANT
Yes sir, don't worry about a
thing. She'll be gassed up and
ready to go by the time you get
back and by the way, the gas is on
the house. We heard about what
you're doing and we want to
support you.

                       EDWARD
Well thank you very much. I really
do appreciate it.

                       GAS STATION ATTENDANT
Our pleasure.

when he here's a noise outside.

Edward heads outside to investigate.

Edward shines a light at the water and finds out that he is
surrounded by sharks and they are the ones hitting the boat.

He lifts the anchor and pilots the boat away from the
sharks.

                       EDWARD
That was a scary sight. I don't
think I can get any sleep tonight.

Edward drives for a couple of minutes and stops.

He types in new coordinates for Iron Mike to follow.

                       EDWARD
Let's drive a little bit longer
tonight until I get sleepy Mike.

After inputting the data, the boat takes off into the night
following the lights of a nearby city on his left side.

EXT. VOYAGER - DAY

Edward is driving the boat and has a full beard and
mustache.

A seagull lands next to him and Edward feeds him a piece of
bread from a sandwich that the gasoline attendant left on
the boat for Edward.

                       EDWARD
Let me get you a piece of this
sandwich the gasoline attendant
left me. I guess he doesn't know I
can't eat solid food, but you can
as long as you keep me company for
a while.

17.

While Edward is feeding his new buddy, he hears a loud fog
horn.

He looks to his right and sees a yacht about half a mile
starboard from Voyager.

He reaches for his fog horn and presses the button to
release a loud horn.

Edward then heads towards his radio to communicate with
them.

                       EDWARD
Hello, this is Captain Edward
Carter from Voyager. Who is the
yacht approaching me?

                       CAPTAIN RICK
      (On Radio)
This is Captain Rick from the Ka
Ching. We thought it might be you
so we wanted to join you for a few
miles.

                       EDWARD
Well thanks for your support. I
could use the company. How did you
here about me?

                       CAPTAIN RICK
      (On Radio)
Jeff the gasoline attendant is
spreading the word to keep an eye
out for you in case you need any
help. Theirs more boats coming to
maybe do a convoy to your place of
destination.

Edward puts on a smile.

                       EDWARD
Well that sounds great. The more
the merrier.

18.

                       CAPTAIN RICK
Alright Captain, will catch up and
follow your rear. Call us if you
need us. Captain Rick out.

Fog horns are sounding. Edward looks around and boats of all
shapes and sizes are making their way towards Voyager.

EXT. GULF OF MEXICO - NIGHT

It is dark and the only thing you can see is a long line of
lights coming from the dozens of boats following Voyager.

Edward drives throughout the night with his new friends and
a new found energy that thrives him to victory.

EXT. NEW YORK HARBOR - DAY

The Statue of Liberty is now showing itself to Edward and
boats are anchored nearby. Fog horns are sounding
congratulating Edward on a job well done.

EXT. NEW YORK HARBOR DOCKS - DAY

Edward is getting off of Voyager. Awaiting him on the docks
is Margaret and dozens of dozens of people including news
reporters.

Margaret goes running to Edward and gives him a hug and
holds him tight.

She starts to cry and so does Edward.

                       EDWARD
I didn't know you'd be here. This
is a wonderful surprise.

                       MARGARET
I could wait a couple of more
months to see you. Look at you.
You need a shave.

Margaret and Edward get approached by several reporters.

19.

                       REPORTER 1
Mr. Carter, how does it feel to
complete your voyage?

                       EDWARD
Well it feels great but my voyage
is only half way done. I still
have to go back.

                       REPORTER 2
So when do you plan on going back?

                       EDWARD
In a couple of days after I shave,
shower, and fill up on supplies.
Now if you guys would excuse us,
we have a lot of catching up to
do.

Edward and Margaret go through the crowd which is cheering
and patting Edward on the back.

EXT. VOYAGER DECK - NIGHT

Edward and Margaret are alone on Voyager except for the
gasoline attendant filling up Voyager.

Margaret is hugging Edward.

                       MARGARET
I don't understand why you are
leaving so soon and at night.

                       EDWARD
I already told you. I want to
leave before anyone finds out. I
want to do this alone. Without
people following me. It was fun
having a convoy but I want to
finish this trip alone.

                       MARGARET
Well can I come with you.

20.

                       EDWARD
Sweetie I really need to do this
alone. Besides we don't have any
supplies for you. Just fly home
and wait for me. I'll make the
trip home quicker than on the way
over here. Please trust me. When I
get home it will be you and me
alone forever. Okay?

                       MARGARET
Okay honey, just becareful.

Margaret hugs and kisses Edward.

Margaret gets off of Voyager and the gasoline attendant
pushes Voyager off into the sea.

                       EDWARD
I'll be fine honey. I love you.

                       MARGARET
I love you, too.

INT. CARTER'S HOME - DAY

Months have passed and Margaret has not heard from Edward.

She is on the phone with John.

                       MARGARET
John the last email I got from
Edward was a month ago. He said he
would be back sometime this week.
I'm starting to get worried.
Hold on I have another phone call.

Margaret flashes to the other line.

                       MARGARET
Hello. Yes this is she. Oh my God!
I'll be right there!

Margaret flashes back to John and she has tears in her eyes.

21.

                       MARGARET
John, that was the coast guard.
They found Voyager on the way to
the marina. Yeah I'll meet you
down there!

Margaret hangs up the phone.

                       MARGARET
John what's going on? Why are
these people here?

John starts to cry and so does Margaret.

Margaret sees Voyager being towed by another boat.

Margaret runs to the docks but John grabs her.

                       JOHN
No, don't go yet. Let them do
their job first.

                       MARGARET
What happened?

                       JOHN
They found him a couple of miles
off shore. According to the coast
guard he died of respiratory
failure. He didn't let anyone know
he was having trouble breathing.

                       MARGARET
I can't believe it.

                       JOHN
I know. I can't believe he's gone
either.

22.

                       MARGARET
No, not that. He made it. He
completed his voyage. He did it
like he said he was going to do.
I'm so proud of him.

John and Margaret hug and cry as Voyager is docking.

The basic idea is interesting, but the characters have no character. They need to have personality. Things need to happen that draw the reader into who Edward is as a person.
