Shirley is a moody, angst-ridden girl who feels threatened when Mike, an autistic boy, comes to her school. Not only does he make friends with everyone (including Shirley's best friend, Ally), he aces tests and earns favor from everyone in the school. Crazed with jealousy, Shirley tries everything to humiliate him, and in doing so, ends up destroying her own friendships and gets into serious trouble. She eventually realizes that respecting others' differences is far more valuable than discrimination.

FADE IN:

EXT. HIGH SCHOOL - DAY

In a long shot, we PAN DOWN from the blue sky to the front
of the Hickory High School. Crowds of students line up
anxiously outside, eager to be admitted.

INSERT SUBTITLE: BEGINNING OF THE SCHOOL YEAR

In a MS, we see SHIRLEY, a fifteen-year-old sophomore
quietly making her way to school. She has short brown hair
and wears a sweater and pants. Her face is covered by a
very fearful, over-controlled expression.

                       ALLY
      (off-screen)
Shirley!

                       SHIRLEY
      (suddenly
       delighted)
Ally!

SHIRLEY rushes forward to greet her best friend, ALICE
(since she is nick-named ALLY, we shall refer to her as ALLY
from now on). ALLY is fifteen years old, and, like SHIRLEY,
a sophomore. There is an obvious contrast between the two
of them; ALLY has an irresistibly charming smile and has
long, black hair. She also wears a slightly revealing
outfit.

                       SHIRLEY
It's so great to see you!

                       ALLY
Same here. How was your summer?

                       SHIRLEY
      (flatly)
Oh... same as always. Boring. And
yours?

                       ALLY
      (casually)
Oh, it was lovely.
      (turning excited)
Guess what? We’re in the same
classes together this year!

2.

                       SHIRLEY
      (excited by this)
Really?! That’s GREAT! We’ve
hardly ever been together in
classes.

                       ALLY
Well, I guess we lucked out this
year!

The bell rings, and the students rush inside.

INT. HIGH SCHOOL MAIN HALL - DAY

The students, all talking at once, head to their classes. We
follow SHIRLEY and ALLY as they walk together toward class.

                       SHIRLEY
Ally, why do you always wear
something so flimsy? Aren’t you
afraid that the boys will hit on
you?

                       ALLY
      (laughing)
I wear whatever I want. And you
worry too much, Shirley; I’ve
dealt with such boys before.
They’re just like my brothers: big
babies who love to tease me.

                       SHIRLEY
      (indignantly)
Well, I don't like to be made fun
of. It reminds me of that
horrible bully from third grade.

                       ALLY
Shirley, you've got to get over
it. That was seven years ago.

                       SHIRLEY
      (a little bit
       brooding)
It doesn’t matter. It still
hurts.

                       ALLY
      (reassuringly)
Well, I'm sure it'll go away in
time.

3.

INT. MATH CLASS - DAY

MIDDLE-SHOT of the entire class assembled. PAN OVER to
SHIRLEY and ALLY seated together. Abruptly, SHIRLEY gets
out of her seat.

                       ALLY
Shirley, where are you going?

                       SHIRLEY
      (briefly facing
       ALLY)
To the corner. I want to make
sure I pay as much attention to
him as possible.

ALLY nods in acknowledgment and SHIRLEY proceeds to her new
seat. When she sits down, she takes out her notebook, and
readies her pencil.

The clamor from the students dies down as we see, in a MS,
the teacher, MR. GREEN, approach the drawing board in front
of the class, and address the students. He is a
middle-aged, casually dressed man with a clean-shaven face
and has short brown hair.

                       MR. GREEN
O.K., good morning, everybody. And
welcome to Pre-Calculus.

CLOSE-UP of MR. GREEN as he writes his name on the drawing
board with a marker.

                       MR. GREEN
My name is Mr. Ralph Green, and I
will be your teacher this year. I
expect all of you to behave
properly and turn in your
assignments on time.

As he finishes writing his name, he faces the class.

MR. GREEN, off-screen, continues to lecture the class about
his expectations, as we see, in a CU, SHIRLEY feverishly
jotting notes in her notebook.

ALLY, meanwhile, remains calm and relaxed. She has no
trouble concentrating, unlike SHIRLEY.

A boy in the classroom, FRANKIE, goggles at ALLY as she
shakes her shirt to cool off in class. ALLY just glances at
him and smiles. He reaches over to touch her.

4.

                       FRANKIE
      (very immature and
       foolish)
Hey, you’re a hot chick! How
‘bout a smooch, huh?

                       ALLY
      (giggling
       mockingly)
You wish!

ALLY moves away, chuckling with amusement.

                       MR. GREEN
      (fierce)
Excuse me. What's your name?

                       FRANKIE
Frankie Jones, sir.

                       MR. GREEN
Frankie, that was inappropriate of
you. I'll see you after school
today.

MR. GREEN jots FRANKIE's name on the board.

SHIRLEY sighs with disgust and shakes her head.

                       SHIRLEY
      (v/o, with reverb)
Ally, how can you stand such
immaturity?

EXT. HIGH SCHOOL - DAY

It is late afternoon. The students all head for home. ALLY
and SHIRLEY walk together, talking about their classes.

                       ALLY
Well, Shirley, what do you think?
Not a bad bunch of classes this
year, huh?

                       SHIRLEY
      (shrugging her
       shoulders)
Probably not, although I've had
better teachers in gym, science,
social studies, and Spanish.

5.

                       ALLY
But what about Mrs. Miklochik, the
drama teacher? Wasn't she fun?

                       SHIRLEY
Yes, definitely. But since I want
to be a star on Broadway someday,
she’d better teach me to expose my
acting talents, or else I quit!

                       ALLY
      (a bit surprised)
Whoa, that's pretty harsh.

                       SHIRLEY
But if I were to choose a favorite
class, I'd say Mr. Green in
Pre-Calculus.

                       ALLY
Ah, yes. Mr. Green. He’s such a
cool teacher! I never thought he
could make math so much fun.

                       SHIRLEY
Yeah, not to mention that he
really knows what he's talking
about—just the qualities I expect
from someone teaching my favorite
subject... next to drama, of
course. I predict that I'll ace
all his tests.

                       ALLY
      (laughing)
Shirley, you always say that about
every math class you’re in.

                       SHIRLEY
      (irate and
       defensive)
What?! Are you doubting me?!

                       ALLY
Shirley, please don't be so
sensitive.

6.

                       SHIRLEY
      (very boastful)
You'll see. This year I'm
serious. I won't be getting a B
or C in his class; I only got
those grades because my earlier
math teachers sucked at teaching.
But with someone who knows what
he's talking about, who knows?
I'll probably be at the top of the
class!

They both laugh.

INT. MATH CLASS - DAY

INSERT SUBTITLE: A FEW DAYS LATER

As soon as his pupils settle in, MR. GREEN turns to address
them.

                       MR. GREEN
O.K. Good morning, students.
Before we get started today, I
have an announcement to make.
      (gestures to a boy
       seated at a table)
Will you please stand up?

The boy stands up from his chair to face them. He is a
sixteen-year-old transfer student with a dreamy look in his
eyes. His brown hair is short yet floppy and he tends to
wear boring, contemporary clothes. His face is very
expressive with exaggerated enthusiasm and childlike
innocence.

                       MR. GREEN
      (to the class)
This is Mike Reynolds, and he is
your new classmate. He will be
receiving special aid from our
assistant teacher, Mrs. Douglas.

MRS. DOUGLAS, a forty-year-old woman sitting beside Mike,
waves to the class.

MR. GREEN points to a headphone device that MIKE is wearing.

7.

                       MR. GREEN
See that device around his neck?
That's a Phonic Ear. He'll be
needing to use it to hear me in
class. Mike, will you tell us
why?

                       MIKE
      (in a rather
       flamboyantly
       exaggerated, yet
       honest and sweet
       voice)
Sure. This is because I happen to
have this, uh...
      (stumbles over his
       words as he talks)
...type of autism called
Aspberger's Syndrome. It causes
me to sometimes, er, get
distracted and I have trouble
paying attention. But I promise I
won't try to be a bother to anyone
and to do my best in school.

The students are captivated by his sweet honest tones...
except SHIRLEY, who is opening her books in silence.

                       MR. GREEN
      (to MIKE)
Thank you.
      (to the class)
So, I expect everyone to treat
Mike like an equal. He may be
different, but he’s your
classmate.

The students all applaud and graciously welcome MIKE.

SHIRLEY, however, stares at him with a mixture of annoyance
and suspiciousness.

                       SHIRLEY
      (v/o with reverb)
Now why is that boy getting all
the attention? He said he was
handicapped! And all the
handicapped people I know are a
bunch of jerks! Oh, don’t tell me
I have to put up with him. Please!
Please!

8.

                       MR. GREEN
      (to the class)
All right, everyone. Settle down.
We're going to have a pop quiz!

The students all groan.

                       MR. GREEN
      (to the class)
I know, I know you folks hate
this, but it's for your own good!
We can't have you slacking off in
class now, can we?

CUT TO:

The students are all taking their pop quiz. SHIRLEY squints
over the questions on the quiz, struggling desperately to
answer them.

ALLY, meanwhile, is marking down her answers when her pencil
breaks with an abrupt CRACK!

                       ALLY
      (gasping)
Rats!

MIKE peers over his desk and notices her for the first time.
Eager to help, he reaches into his pencil case and removes
a pencil, offering it to ALLY.

                       MIKE
      (whispering)
Here. Use this.

                       ALLY
Oh, thank you.

SHIRLEY notices this and, with an irritated expression, she
drops her pencil and glares at them.

                       MR. GREEN
Shirley, what’s the matter? Is
there something wrong?

                       SHIRLEY
      (realizing what
       she's doing)
Ah!
      (flatly, to MR.

9.

                       SHIRLEY (cont'd)
       GREEN)
It's nothing. Really, it's
nothing.

She gets back to work.

INT. LOCKER HALL OUTSIDE MATH CLASS - DAY

It is the end of class. ALLY walks out with MIKE.

                       ALLY
      (somewhat
       flirtatiously)
Hey, Mike... thank you for the
pencil.

                       MIKE
      (enthusiastically)
Hey, no problem! I’m delighted to
help! In fact, I want to make
sure that I, uh, make, like, as
many friends as possible.

                       ALLY
      (chuckling)
And I’m sure that you will, given
how devoted you seem to it.

                       MIKE
Anyway, I’m very pleased to meet
you, uh.... what should I, like,
refer to you as?

                       ALLY
My name's Alice—-Alice Lynch. But
please call me Ally; I have a
cousin who’s named Alice and I
don’t like to get my name mixed
up.

                       MIKE
Ally? That’s quite a lovely name.

                       ALLY
Thank you.

MRS. DOUGLAS approaches MIKE.

                       MRS. DOUGLAS
Mike, come on. We have to go to
our next class.

10.

                       MIKE
      (frustrated groan
       to himself; then
       smiles sheepishly
       at ALLY)
Uh, I’m sorry... but I’d better be
going.

                       ALLY
Oh no, there’s no need to
apologize. I understand.

She moves closer and winks at MIKE playfully.

                       ALLY
But I’ll look for you later, ‘kay?

                       MIKE
      (shouting
       excitedly)
OK!

                       ALLY
      (reacting to his
       loud voice)
Uh... a little too loud there,
Mike.

                       MIKE
      (a little
       embarrassed)
Oh... sorry about that. Goodbye!

MIKE leaves with MRS. DOUGLAS.

                       ALLY
      (staring after him
       fondly)
Bye, Mike.
      (to herself)
What a sweet boy he is!

She turns to see SHIRLEY staring at her.

                       ALLY
Oh! Shirley! What’s the matter?
You look upset.

SHIRLEY snaps out of her stare.

                       SHIRLEY
      (flatly)
Oh, it’s nothing. Let’s go.

11.

                       ALLY
      (uncertain)
Okay....

They walk off.

It is the end of the day. SHIRLEY and ALLY are walking home
from school.

                       SHIRLEY
That new boy, Mike... he could be
trouble.

                       ALLY
What do you mean?

                       SHIRLEY
      (somewhat panicked)
Well, you heard what he said! He’s
autistic, handicapped, you know,
a, dummy.

                       ALLY
Shirley, I wouldn’t worry about
it. Mike may be autistic, but he
doesn’t seem bad. I kinda like
him actually.

                       SHIRLEY
But Ally, that’s not the point.
He’s in our classes—-well, except
drama. And if we have to deal
with him every day....

                       ALLY
Shirley, why are you so upset with
this?

SHIRLEY cannot think of a good answer to that question.

INT. SHIRLEY'S BEDROOM - NIGHT

The school bell rings.

INT. MATH CLASS - DAY

In a MS, MR. GREEN hands his students their graded quizzes.

Cut to CU as we see SHIRLEY react to her paper.

Then, from a POINT-OF-VIEW shot, we see her grade on the
paper—C+ in red ink!

                       SHIRLEY (O.S.)
      (v/o with reverb)
What?! C-plus?!

Cut to CU of SHIRLEY fuming.

                       SHIRLEY
      (v/o with reverb)
It can’t be! Math is my favorite
subject! How could I possibly
bomb this pop quiz?!

Then we cut to a CU of FRANKIE as he examines his quiz.

                       FRANKIE
      (somewhat
       sarcastic)
D-plus! My best pop quiz grade
yet!

Next we see ALLY reading off her quiz.

                       ALLY
      (v/o with reverb)
Hmm... B-plus. Not bad.

Finally MIKE gets his quiz. From his point-of-view, we see
that he has gotten a perfect score.

Then we cut to MIKE as he shouts...

                       MIKE
      (excited)
An A-plus?! All right!!!!

13.

SHIRLEY gasps in shock.

The students all stare at MIKE as if he is odd.

                       MRS. DOUGLAS
      (somewhat berating)
Mike, you’re talking too loud.

MIKE grins sheepishly.

                       MIKE
      (to the class)
Oops. Sorry. Sometimes I can get
a little too excited when I
receive good grades.

The students all acknowledge MIKE’s apology. ALLY, who is
sitting next to MIKE, grabs his shoulders with excitement.

                       ALLY
This is incredible, Mike! You
actually earned a perfect score on
this quiz?!

                       MIKE
I almost feared I was never gonna
get it.

                       ALLY
Mike, I can’t tell you how
impressed I am; I wish I could
have done as well as you. I only
got a B-plus.

                       MIKE
      (smiling
       innocently)
Yeah, I guess you could have.

                       ALLY
      (a little confused)
Huh? Excuse me?

                       MIKE
      (startled at what
       he said)
Oh, I’m sorry. Did I say
something bad? I didn’t mean to.
I mean, I...

       breath and
       confesses)
Sometimes I can mix up what I am

      (smiling,

You’re so sweet!

                       MIKE
      (somewhat
       embarrassed)
Am I? Oh, I’m sorry.

                       ALLY
Mike, you shouldn’t apologize so
much.

                       MIKE
Oh.
      (chuckles)
Sorry.

ALLY just chuckles.

SHIRLEY is observing this exchange; she is growing more and
more suspicious.

To get his students back on track, MR. GREEN raises his
voice as he announces...

                       MR. GREEN
O.K., ladies and gentlemen.
There's gonna be a major test this
Friday.

All the students groan.

INT. LOCKER HALL OUTSIDE MATH CLASS - DAY

It is the end of class. ALLY and MIKE walk out together,

                       FRANKIE
Hey, Mikey, man! What’s up, huh?

                       MIKE
Nothin’ much.

They both high-five.

                       FRANKIE
How’d you get A+ on that pop quiz,
man? That’s a feat!

                       MIKE
      (laughing)
I’m not sure how I did. But I
definitely tried my best.
Actually, I thought I’d bombed it.

                       FRANKIE
You’re so smart, man!

                       MIKE
      (modestly)
Aw, shucks. I’m really not that
special.

                       ALLY
      (quizzically)
Mike, you should give yourself
some credit. Why are you so
modest?

                       MIKE
Well... I don’t like to boast
about myself; and besides, my
parents really kinda embarrass me
when they say I’m great.

ALLY gives MIKE a playful nudge. He chuckles.

                       FRANKIE
Hey, Mike-the-man, can ya do me a
favor? I wanna do well on the
next test. So can you, like, make
a copy of your notes for me?

                       MIKE
Sure. No problem.

During the above, SHIRLEY walks out of the class all by
herself.

ALLY approaches SHIRLEY.

                       ALLY
Shirley?

                       SHIRLEY

Huh? Wh-What?

                       ALLY
Why are you sitting all by
yourself? Is something eating
you?

                       SHIRLEY
      (grouchy and
       jealous)
Why are you asking me that? I
figured you’d be hanging out with
Mike.

                       ALLY
      (misinterpreting
       her)
You want to meet Mike? Stay right
there. I’ll bring him over.

She goes off to retrieve MIKE.

                       SHIRLEY
      (very panicked)
No, Ally. Please! Not that!
Please! Please! Please!

ALLY returns with MIKE.

                       ALLY
Mike, I’d like you to meet my best
friend, Shirley.

MIKE notices SHIRLEY and his face brightens with
fascination. He is especially taken with how... different
she looks in comparison to most girls.

EVERYONE in the cafeteria turns around and stares at them.
Some comment about her hair.

It’s worse than I suspected!
You’re such a jerk!!!

SHIRLEY storms off, muttering angrily to herself.

                       MIKE

I didn’t think she’d get so
angry... I couldn’t help but

Well... um... Mike... you do have

MR. GREEN hands his students their tests.

                       MR. GREEN
All right, folks. I hope you all
studied hard. I believe that it's
now time to start...

He is interrupted by the sound of a door opening. It is
SHIRLEY. She drags in, very exhausted and heavy-eyed.

                       MR. GREEN
      (staring at her

Shirley Rackle. How nice of you

SHIRLEY abruptly shakes her head and turns tough and steely.

                       SHIRLEY
I’m just fine, Mr. Green, thank

When you have finished taking your

SHIRLEY answers the first questions, but then her mind

Mike, remember what we’ve talked
about when we studied for it.

MIKE looks at the paper again. Suddenly, he remembers, and
then answers. SHIRLEY is puzzled by what he is doing, but
then, realizing what she is doing, she goes back to her

Shirley... I just want to be

I made that comment.

                       SHIRLEY

      (A brief switch of

Hmm... maybe it WAS mean of me to
make that comment. Otherwise I
probably wouldn’t have gotten
detention... but...
      (She turns angry
       yet again.)
...oh, if only he had never come!

NOTE: The above monologue will be recorded individually. As
SHIRLEY's voice speaks the following, her facial expressions
must change to match the words. But after this, she will
say the following out loud, with great anger.

                       SHIRLEY

MIKE gets up out of his seat and whispers something to MRS.
DOUGLAS. She nods in acknowledgment, and he walks out the
door. While he is gone, SHIRLEY spies MIKE’s pencil on his
desk. Impulsively, she snatches it, giggling to herself.

MIKE returns a moment later, and notices that his pencil is
missing!

                       MIKE
      (gasping)
My pencil!

He searches his pencil case frantically.

                       MIKE
Oh, no! Where is it?! That was
the only one I brought today!
      (dejected)
I guess I’ll just have to use my
pen.

                       SHIRLEY
      (mockingly from
       behind)
So you misplaced your own
belongings, eh? You’re not just a
jerk, you’re a RETARD!

MIKE is very shocked and is about to protest when ALLY grabs
his shoulder.

                       ALLY
Mike, just ignore her. You can
always borrow mine.

                       MIKE
Thanks, Ally.

                       SHIRLEY
      (madder than ever)
Ally, I’m warning you...!

MR. GREEN comes to the front of the class.

                       MR. GREEN
OK, folks, before we get started
today, will you please turn in
your take-home quiz from last
night?

The students search their books and take out their take-home
quiz. All except SHIRLEY, whose angry face suddenly turns
into panic.

29.

                       SHIRLEY
      (shocked)
Oh, no!

Frantically, she searches her book.

                       SHIRLEY
      (out loud)
Rats! I’ve forgotten it!
      (to herself)
I’m gonna get a bad grade...!

                       MIKE (O.S.)
Here. Take this.

SHIRLEY looks up. MIKE stands over her, generously handing
out a blank copy of the take-home quiz.

                       MIKE
I kept it with me just in case I
needed it. Maybe you can fill
this out quickly and then hand it

                       SHIRLEY

I don't need your help! And
besides, there's not enough time,

                       MIKE

But... but you don’t wanna flunk

INT. LOCKER HALL - DAY

MIKE approaches ALLY as she strolls to her locker.

                       MIKE
Ally?

                       ALLY
Yeah?

                       MIKE
Wanna go to the School Dance? I'll

                       ALLY
I’d love to!

                       MIKE
Great!

SHIRLEY, who is listening in on this, storms over to them.
She is extremely livid.

                       SHIRLEY
Ally, are you nuts?! You can’t
possibly go with Mike. He’s a
freak! Just like Jake in third
grade.

                       ALLY
Shirley!

                       SHIRLEY
You stood up for me when that
disabled bully was picking on me.
And now you’re planning on dating
a disabled bully?!

31.

                       ALLY
It's true that Mike is autistic,
but he's no bully.

                       SHIRLEY
Yes, he is! And you’re joining
forces with him! How can you
possibly betray me?!

                       ALLY
Shirley, what is wrong with you?

                       SHIRLEY
      (very demandingly)
Decide right now who your REAL
friend is—-me or him!

                       ALLY
      (obviously hurt by
       her words, but
       still trying to
       be patient)
Shirley... why does it have to be
one or the other? Why can’t it be
both?

                       SHIRLEY
      (now really pissed
       off)
So you choose him over me?!

                       ALLY
      (losing patience)
Shirley, that’s not what I said!

                       SHIRLEY
Well, then you’re not my friend
anymore, Ally! You’re nothing but
a disloyal bitch, and I hate you!

SHIRLEY points at MIKE.

                       SHIRLEY
I hate you too, Mike!

She rushes out of the hallway, screaming...

                       SHIRLEY

MIKE stares after her, obviously baffled and heartbroken.

                       MIKE
Maybe I never should’ve come to
this school.

                       ALLY
Mike, it's not your fault.
Shirley...
      (trying to explain)
...has a lot of issues she’s
dealing with. You don't know her
well like I do. She always looks
up to me as a big sister. After
all, she's the only child in her
family.

                       MIKE
Yeah, well, next year I’ll be
transferring to Emeryville High
School. Then I won’t cause
anymore problems for you or
Shirley.

                       ALLY
You shouldn't blame yourself for
the way Shirley's been acting. Her
troubles began long before you
came here. You see, in third
grade, Shirley and I had to deal
with this boy named Jake. Like
you, he was kinda handicapped,
only he was a bully. He was a
monster. He delighted in
tormenting Shirley... mainly by
pulling on her long hair. Only I
stood up for her. But even with
me defending her, Shirley never
really got over that year. That's
why, to this day, she keeps her
hair short.

As she speaks, we see her entire story enacted in a black
and white, fuzzy halo super-imposed over them.

                       MIKE
Is that why she’s, like, angry all
the time when I try to talk to
her?

33.

                       ALLY
Well... she HAS told me that she'd
always hate people with mental
disabilities. But before we met,
well, I never realized how much
fun handicapped people could be.
Shirley... just doesn't see that.
Nor does she really care to
understand.

                       MIKE
One thing’s for sure, though, I’ve
definitely come between you two.
All I wanted was to do well in
this school and make new friends.
But... I guess all I do is make
you and Shirley unhappy.

                       ALLY
Mike... you will ALWAYS be my
friend.

                       MIKE
      (deeply touched)
Ally....

She gives him a hug. They do not realize that SHIRLEY is
spying on them from far away. Only she is not angry; she is
feeling left out.

INT. GYMNASIUM - NIGHT

The School Dance night. MIKE seems to have cheered up. He
and ALLY dance the night away; during a slow number, she
snuggles against him. There is a very intimate moment
between them. SHIRLEY stands all alone, watching them. She
obviously is isolated from everyone else, but she does not
want to be friends with MIKE. Sadly, she walks away.

Look, why don’t you just go back

SHIRLEY turns away from him. MIKE is very sad. Just then,
however, ALLY approaches him, paying no attention to
SHIRLEY.

ALLY gives MIKE a sheet of paper. MIKE looks at it.

      (with a gasp of
       happy surprise!)
Your address!

                       MIKE

Uh... tell me, how is Mike doing?
I mean, you did exchange addresses

                       ALLY
Why, Shirley, I’m surprised that
you asked! He actually just wrote

                       SHIRLEY
Really?

                       ALLY
Yes. He said he’s doing fine and
is looking forward to starting his
new year at Emeryville High
School.

                       SHIRLEY
Oh... that’s a good school, I

                       ALLY
And he said he misses me fondly
and hopes that you’re doing all
right.

SHIRLEY is very shocked to hear this. In an ECU, we see her
face contort into a stab of regret.

39.

                       SHIRLEY
      (v/o, with reverb)
Mike... you really weren’t bad

                       ALLY (O.S.)
Shirley? Is something wrong?

                       SHIRLEY
      (startled out of

Huh?

We go back to the MS of SHIRLEY and ALLY. SHIRLEY lowers
her head before ALLY and slowly answers...

                       SHIRLEY
Ally... I’m sorry about the way
I’ve been acting lately. I guess
I understand now why you hung out
with Mike all the time. You...
saw beyond his, uh, autism...
didn’t you?

                       ALLY
Well, yes. I enjoyed being around
him so much that I didn’t even
care whether he was disabled or
not. All I saw in Mike was a
sweet, noble friend... probably
one of the best boys I’ve ever
met.

                       SHIRLEY
I guess... that’s why you weren’t
so lonely.

                       ALLY
No... but it looked to me like you
were pretty miserable when he was
around.

                       SHIRLEY
I was... but, I think I’ve changed
my mind about something.

                       ALLY
Yeah?

CU of SHIRLEY’s face.

40.

                       SHIRLEY
I realized... that I am
handicapped, too. I let Jake's
bullying hurt me so much that I
could never let it go. But in
doing that, I had trouble making
friends with other people who are
nice. I guess it doesn't really
matter if people are, are normal
or--or different, or retarded, or
maybe even, uh, disabled. As long
as they're good at heart, then
that's all that counts. Ally...

Back to MS of SHIRLEY and ALLY.

                       SHIRLEY
...from now on, I'm going to adapt
to your way of thinking. I'm
going to try to make as many new
friends as possible, no matter
what. And you know, I don't
really care anymore if they're
handicapped or not... and it sure
beats being alone. That was no
fun at all.

                       ALLY
      (very happy)
Shirley!

She gives her a big hug.
