DARK MARTYR (IN PROGRESS)

INT. GOLDEN PAWN SHOP - DAY

We see various trinkets and old pieces of furniture. Against
one wall is a wooden counter with an old cash register on
it. SCOTT is sitting at the counter reading a magazine
which sits next to the cash register.

A bell rings as the door to the shop opens. CARTER walks in
and casually starts to look at the many items in the room.

                       SCOTT
      (looking up)
Uh.. Can I help you?

                       CARTER
      (noticing SCOTT)
No thanks I was just looking
around.

Scott continues to watch Carter as he strolls around the
room. He appears to be looking for something. Finally his
eyes light up and he looks at Scott.

                       CARTER
Um.. Is the owner here? I'd like
to ask him something.

                       SCOTT
If it's prices you want, I can do
that too. I work here ya' know.

                       CARTER
Actually, I need to ask him if
something I uh.. ordered came in.

                       SCOTT
      (irritated)
We don't order things here. What
kind of place do you think this
is?

                       CARTER
I know you don't but your boss
ordered something as a favor.

Scott stares at Carter for a few seconds and then turns his
attention to the stairway behind him.

2.

                       SCOTT
      (shouting)
Mr. Fujimi! Someone's here to see
you.

FUJIMI comes down stairs. We hear the soft click of the hard
heels of his shoes on the hardwood steps. When he sees
Carter, a look of realization comes to his face and he
wordlessly heads for the counter and pulls out a small
wooden box and hands it to Carter.

                       CARTER
Thanks again Fujimi. You don't
know how much this means to us.

                       FUJIMI
      (ponderously)
I don't suppose you'll ever tell
me what you need all those for
will you?

                       CARTER
Sorry, Fujimi. I doubt you'd
beleive me anyways.

Carter holds out his hand to shake. We, along with Scott,
notice that he holds some money in his outstreched hand.

                       CARTER (CONT'D)
Thanks again.

Scott and Fujimi watch as Carter walks to the door. Instead
of pulling it, he tries to push it but runs into it. He
shakes it off and leaves the shop.

                       FUJIMI
      (shaking his head)
Every time he does that.

Fujimi walks back upstairs and Scott watches him. When he is
out of sight, he looks quizzically back at the door.

INT. SCOTT'S ROOM ABOVE THE GOLDEN PAWN SHOP - DAY

We see a rather messy room in which clothes are scattered
about. The top of the dresser and the table are covered in
newspapers, magazines, and books. A small TV sits on a stool
in the corner. There is only one small window that lets in
just enough light to see during the day.

SCOTT walks over to the TV and turns it on. The reception is

3.

bad. A news program is on. Scott walks away. The CAMERA
focuses on the TV.

                       REPORTER
..nd another body was found late
last night in the downtown area.
The victim, 21 year old, Jerry
Caldwell, was reported absent for
work for the last three days and a
missing persons report was filed.
The body showed the same type of
injuries as two others found last
week. Officials have no comment as
to who the murderer is or what
weapon was used. News Channel 6
will report as soon as new details
are available...

Scott turns off the TV. He is now clothed in something
different. He walks out of the room.

EXT. OUTSIDE THE GOLDEN PAWN SHOP - NIGHT

We see The Golden Pawn shop. It is a small, two story
building wedged in between two much taller buildings. It's
in the downtown area, so the sidewalk is the only thing that
separates the shop from the deteriorating street.

SCOTT steps out of the only door and turns and locks it.
Before moving he looks up and toward the CAMERA as if
looking for someone who is spying on him. After a few
seconds he turns and walks left off the screen.

EXT. OUTSIDE THE KING OF CLUBS CLUB - NIGHT

We see a poorly maintained building. The parking lot is half
full and there are a few people standing next to the only
visible door, smoking. We hear muffled music from the club.

SCOTT slowly walks to the door and enters. The people next
to the door stare at him in mockery. He ignores them.

INT. THE KING OF CLUBS CLUB - NIGHT

We see what appears to be more of a bar than a club. The
music heard from the last scene is louder and clearer. There
are several pool tables, an old juke box, and a bar. There
are several men at a pool table making bets, each with a
beer in his hand. There are two other people at the bar,
each drinking slowly and not talking.

4.

The CAMERA pans across showing the pool tables first, then
the juke box, and finally the bar. SCOTT sits at the bar
slowly drinking what appears to be whiskey. The CAMERA stops
and slowly zooms on Scott's head. After a couple swallows,
the bar tender walks to him and holds up a bottle of whiskey
as if asking if he wants more. Scott nods and sets his glass
down. The bartender fills it up. After one more swallow, the
CAMERA stops zooming and is perfectly centered on his head.

INT. THE GOLDEN PAWN SHOP - DAY

SCOTT stumbles down the stairs. He's slightly hungover, but
has covered it up nicely. He approaches the counter and sits
down on the stool. He grabs a magazine, opens it up, reads
it for a second, looks at the cover and then throws it
aside. He looks around for a second and then we hear faint
shouting. He turns his head and leans across the counter. We
see FUJIMI standing in front of his desk, talking on a phone
in what appears to have once been a closet, but is now his
office.

                       FUJIMI
      (shouthing into
       the phone)
But I need the money!

A few seconds as someone responds.

                       FUJIMI
      (shouting into the
       phone)
I don't care, my store will go
under if you won't..

A few seconds as someone responds.

                       FUJIMI
      (into the phone,
       pleadingly)
I understand, but how will I..

A few seconds as someone responds.

                       FUJIMI
      (into the phone)
How do you know they have anything
to do with it?

A few seconds as some one responds.

5.

                       FUJIMI
      (into the phone)
You can't be sure. What are they?

A few seconds as someone responds.

                       FUJIMI
      (shouting into the
       phone angrily)
Fine! You've just sentenced me
to...

Fujimi looks at the phone and puts it back on the receiver.
He turns and we see an extremely worried and shocked face.
He sees Scott and puts on a fake smile. Scott isn't fooled
and sports a concerned face.

                       SCOTT
What happened? Who was that?

                       FUJIMI
      (choked)
Nothing, everything's all right.

                       SCOTT
      (concerned)
No, seriously, what happened is
everything all right?

                       FUJIMI
      (choked)
It will be. Now, don't worry about
it.

                       SCOTT
      (sternly)
Hold on a second. What happened?
You can tell me. What's wrong.

                       FUJIMI
Nothing. Our store is just going
to have some financial trouble
soon.

                       SCOTT
Why? Was that Mr. Long? Is our
rent about to rise?

                       FUJIMI
No, No. That was Mr. Harrison.
He's not going to be purchasing
items from us anymore.

6.

                       SCOTT
      (puzzled)
Mr. Harrison? Who's that? I don't
think I've met him. What does he
buy?

                       FUJIMI
      (really smiling)
So many questions. You've never
met him. You know the man that
came in here yesterday? That was
an associate of his. Lately,
they've been paying us quite well
for our services. But lately,
someone has been tracking him
through me. So, he decided to end
our business.

                       SCOTT
Oh. So what was he buying?

There is a pause. Fujimi is quite uncomfortable answering
the question. Finally, he replies.

                       FUJIMI
      (uncomfortably)
I..I don't really know.

Scott peers at Fujimi for a moment as if trying to figure
out what he's hiding.

                       SCOTT
      (suspiciously)
Mr. Fujimi, were you selling
drugs?

                       FUJIMI
      (shocked, angry)
What!? What would make you think
of something so absurd?

                       SCOTT
      (embarassed)
Well, you tried to hide it from me
and then you say you don't know
what it is. I mean, you know what
everything is.

                       FUJIMI
      (still angry)
Come with me.

7.

Fujimi heads for the stairs and Scott gets up and follows
him up.

INT. FUJIMI'S ROOM ABOVE THE GOLDEN PAWN SHOP - DAY

We see a clean and quite barren room. The structure is like
that of Scott's Room. There a few pieces of furniture,
including a bed.

FUJIMI and SCOTT walk into the room and head for the bed.
Scott stops, but Fujimi gets on his knees and grabs
something from under his bed. It is a box almost indentical
to the one he gave Carter. He stands up and hands the box to
Scott. Scott opens the box and the CAMERA focuses on its
contents. Inside are dozens of marble sized clear blue orbs.
Scott looks up at Fujimi.

                       SCOTT
      (confused)
Marbles?

                       FUJIMI
That's what I thought at first,
too. But no one would ever pay
thousands of dollars for marbles.

                       SCOTT
      (shocked)
Thousands? They gave you
thousands?

                       FUJIMI
      (smiling)
Just over a couple months. It's
just enough to keep our bills
paid.

                       SCOTT
So how many of these marbles have
you sold to them?

                       FUJIMI
Well, the thing is, they won't
take any marbles. Only solid color
ones. And they've given amny of
them back saying they weren't the
right type.

                       SCOTT
Picky marble collectors, aren't
they?

8.

Fujimi chuckles and then takes a deep breath through his
nose. A look of concern crosses his face.

                       FUJIMI
      (concerned)
Have you been drinking again?

Scott looks up with a look of guilt.

                       SCOTT
      (lying)
Uh, no. You know I stopped.

                       FUJIMI
      (concerned)
Scott, you know how hard it was to
quit the first time. Not only is
it bad for your life and health,
it's also illegal for your age.

                       SCOTT
      (ashamed)
I know, I know.

                       FUJIMI
      (sternly)
If I ever catch you drinking
again, I'll have that god awful
bar closed down and you tossed
into rehab. Is that clear.

Scott looks at the ground and remains silent.

                       FUJIMI (Cont'd)
      (sympathetically)
I know I'm not your parent. But I
know that they wouldn't want their
only child to ruin his life over
their deaths.

The both of them are silent for a few moments.

                       FUJIMI
      (smiling)
Now go get cleaned up. You look
terrible.

9.

INT. SCOTT'S ROOM ABOVE THE GOLDEN PAWN SHOP - NIGHT

We see SCOTT sitting in a chair in his room. The room is
almost completely dark. Scott is thinking about something.
He looks as if he is trying to make a choice. Finally, he
gets up and grabs his jacket and leaves.

EXT. OUTSIDE OF THE KING OF CLUBS CLUB - NIGHT

Just a brief shot of the outside of the club just to show
where the next scene takes place.

INT. THE KING OF CLUBS CLUB - NIGHT

There are more prople in the club this time. A few people
dance, and some play pool. SCOTT is alone at the bar this
time. It is a friday night.

At one of the pool tables there is a heated match between a
BIKER and a girl named MEL. They quickly take turns shooting
pool until one of them misses a shot. After a few minutes,
Mel shoots the final shot and hoots. She turns to the Biker.

                       MEL
      (pompously)
Pay up, baby!

The Biker glares at her with hatred.

                       BIKER
      (furiously)
You cheated me you little..

                       MEL
Bullshit! Pay up!

Everyone watching the match begins to cautiously walk away,
trying to stay out of trouble. The Biker turns around and
begins to walk away.

                       MEL
      (angrily)
Hey, where do you think your
going?

She grabs the Biker's shoulder. He spins around and pops her
in the face with the back of his hand. She drops to the
ground. Scott gets up and walks to him.

10.

                       SCOTT
      (accusingly)
Hey, man! What the hell was that?!
You hit a girl!

The Biker turns around and grabs Scott by the throat.

                       BIKER
      (threateningly)
You'd better mind your own
business if you knew what was best
for you.

Mel sits up and punches the Biker in the crotch with all her
force. The Biker drops Scott and falls to the ground. Mel
quickly gets up, grabs the biker's wallet, and runs out of
the club. Scott tries to grab her as she runs by him, but
misses. When he turns around the Biker has gotten up and
raises his fist. Suddenly, someone (unseen right now) grabs
the biker and throws him over his shoulder. The person grabs
Scott by the arm and pulls him out of the club.

EXT. OUTSIDE THE GOLDEN PAWN SHOP - NIGHT

We see SCOTT and CARTER walking toward the Golden Pawn Shop.

                       CARTER
      (ammused)
And just how were you expecting to
kick his ass?

                       SCOTT
      (irritated)
I never said that I was going to
kick his ass. i just said that I
was going to stop him.

They stop in front of the door to the Golden Pawn Shop.

                       CARTER
How else were you going to stop
him? By having a nice talk about
ethics?

                       SCOTT
      (angry)
Look.. whoever the hell you are..

                       CARTER
Carter, Carter Wilkerson

Carter extends his hand but Scott doesn't take it.

11.

                       SCOTT
Whatever. Get off my back. You
took care of him, okay? You can
stop gloating now.

                       CARTER
Alright.

There is a long moment of silence where neither of them know
what to say.

                       CARTER
So, you work here huh?

                       SCOTT
      (irritated)
Look, don't start with the small
talk. You may have my thanks but
you don't have my friendship.

                       CARTER
Well, whatever. By the way, what
happened to that girl?

                       SCOTT
Who cares? She got us into trouble
so she could be in jail for all I
care.

                       CARTER
      (surprised)
Really? I thought she was kind of
hot with the British accent and
all.

                       SCOTT
      (sarcastically)
Yeah, that's just what I need. A
girlfriend that could beat me up
in a fight.

                       CARTER
      (laughs)
Well, she did cheat.

                       SCOTT
      (smiles)
Yeah, that's true.

Another pause. Finally, Scott turns and opens the door.

12.

                       CARTER
      (turnng to leave)
Well, I guess we might meet again
sometime.

                       SCOTT
      (turns to Carter)
By the way why are you and your
associate not buying those marbles
any more?

Carter stops walking. Thinks for a second.

                       CARTER
      (not looking at
       Scott)
I hope you never find out.

Carter silently walks offscreen. Scott watches him
curiously. Then he turns, opens the door and walks in.

INT. THE GOLDEN PAWN SHOP - NIGHT

It is almost pitch black. We can barely see SCOTT as he
opens the door. He takes a few steps and then hits
something.

                       SCOTT
What the..?

He turns around and walks back to the door and turns on the
light. The room is a mess. Most of the old furniture is
broken and many of the glass trinkets are smashed. A chair,
broken in half, sits where Scott bumped his leg. Scott looks
around in disbeleif.

                       SCOTT
      (shouting)
Mr. Fujimi!?

There is no answer and Scott begins to weave in and out of
the wreckage. Finally he makes his way to the counter in the
back. FUJIMI is hunched over the counter, unmoving.

                       SCOTT
Mr. Fujimi!

Scott grabs Fujimi and rolls him over. We now see Fujimi's
face. It is twisted in shock and fear. There are red claw
marks all over his visible body but the skin is not broken
and there is no blood.

13.

                       SCOTT
      (gasps)

We then hear a slight shuffling noise from the upstairs.
Scott spins around and concentrates on listening for the
noise. The noise happens again and Scott bolts upstairs.

INT. FUJIMI'S ROOM ABOVE THE GOLDEN PAWN SHOP - NIGHT

Once again, the scene is almost pitch black. SCOTT enters
cautiously, looking around as he opens the door. He slowly
walks to the middle of the room. We hear the shuffling noise
coming from the direction of the bed. As Scott approaches
the bed, we hear a scrapping sound and the shuffling quickly
moves around the room, avoiding Scott. The door opens and
then closes. Scott quickly follows the noise out of the
room.

INT. THE GOLDEN PAWN SHOP - NIGHT

SCOTT quickly runs down the stairs. As soon as he gets to
the bottom the lights go out and we hear a crash.

EXT. OUTSIDE THE LAY-ZEE MOTEL - NIGHT

We see a cheap, run down motel. There are a few neon lights
still lit and a few cars parked outside. A figure walks to
the door of one of the rooms and enters.

INT. THE LAY-ZEE MOTEL, ROOM 005 - NIGHT

CARTER enters as LEON and several others are quickly packing
to leave.

In addition to the mass of clothes and personal belongings,
there are quite a few old books and parchments.

                       CARTER
      (confused)
Uh..What's going on? Why are we
leaving?

Leon looks up at Carter.

                       LEON
      (stressed)
The Arzaks have found us again.
Quibbley reported that they got
Fujimi.

14.

                       CARTER
      (shocked)
Fujimi?! Where?

                       LEON
      (irritated)
At his pawn shop. Where else?

                       CARTER
Are you sure? I was just there and
I didn't sense them.

                       LEON
Of course I'm sure. Lately they've
been able to get around without us
noticing.

                       CARTER
      (shocked)
Oh my God! I just left Scott there
alone.

                       LEON
Who?

                       CARTER
Scott, Fujimi's friend. He works
with him.

Leon stops for a minute and thinks.

                       LEON
We can't afford to help him,
Carter.

                       CARTER
      (shocked)
But,,,

                       LEON
Look, if we fight them now,
they'll be right on our tails
where ever we go.

Carter looks at Leon with dislike.

EXT. OUTSIDE THE GOLDEN PAWN SHOP - DAY

There are two police cars and an ambulance parked outside of
the Golden Pawn Shop with their flashers on. Some of the
windows on the pawn shop are busted and the door is off its
hinges. Two paremedics carry a stetcher with a body on it

15.

out of the shop and to the ambulance. SCOTT sits on the hood
of one of the police cars with a bandages forehead. A
parmedic walks away as officer BRYANT walks toward Scott.

                       BRYANT
      (friendly)
So, Mr..
      (looks at his pad)
Martin. I know you've told many
people but I'm going to need you
to tell me what happened here.

                       SCOTT
      (annoyed)
What is there left to tell? I came
home, walked in, saw Mr. Fujimi's
body, heard the murderer upstairs,
when, I got up there, I heard him
come down. I followed him down and
then he hit me and left.

                       BRYANT
He just hit you and left.

                       SCOTT
That's what I said.

                       BRYANT
Do you have any idea why he didn't
kill you too.

                       SCOTT
      (irritated)
I dunno..Maybe he was in a hurry.

                       BRYANT
Maybe. Why did he go downstairs
when you got up there?

                       SCOTT
Well, it was dark and I couldn't
see, but I thought I heard him
grab something first.

                       BRYANT
Any idea what it was?

                       SCOTT
I have no...

Scott pauses for a second when he realizes it was the box of
marbles.

16.

                       BRYANT
Uh..Are you okay?

                       SCOTT
      (jerks his head
       back to Bryant)
What? Yeah.

                       BRYANT
Maybe you need some more time.
Here's my card.
      (hands Scott a
       card)
Call it anytime your ready to
talk.

                       SCOTT
Thanks.

Bryant walks to his unmarked car nearby and gets in the
driver's seat. KENT is seated in the passenger's side.

                       KENT
So..Whaddya think?

                       BRYANT
      (puzzled)
That kid...There's something funny
about him. Get some one to follow
him around and see what he's like.

                       KENT
      (shocked)
What? You think he did it or
something?

                       BRYANT
I have no idea, but I think maybe
he might whether he knows it or
not.

INT. INSIDE FUJMI'S ROOM ABOVE THE GOLDEN PAWN SHOP - DAY

SCOTT walks in the room and immediatly heads for the bed. He
kneels down next to it. The CAMERA switches angles. We now
see Scott looking under the bed. The CAMERA is under the bed
looking at him. When he notices the box is gone he mutters
to himself.

                       SCOTT
      (muttering)
What the..? I gotta find Carter.

17.

EXT. OUTSIDE THE KING OF CLUBS CLUB - DAY

Just a brief shot of the outside of the club just to show
where the next scene takes place.

INT. THE KING OF CLUBS CLUB - DAY

The club is almost completely empty except for a few people
sitting around drinking and talking.

SCOTT walks up to the Bar TENDER.

                       SCOTT
I need to ask you something.

                       TENDER
      (walks toward
       Scott)
Ask away.

                       SCOTT
You know the fight that happened
in here last night?

                       TENDER
      (sarcastically)
No, nothing like that ever happens
here.

                       SCOTT
      (irritated)
Snap out of it. Do you know where
I can find...

                       TENDER
51 3rd Street South. Apartment
132.

                       SCOTT
      (surprised)
Uh..Thanks.

                       TENDER
      (winks)
I took the liberty of finding that
out a long time ago.

Scott looks at the Bar Tender as if he's weird and then
silently walks out.

18.

INT. MEL'S APARTMENT BUILDING, HALLWAY - DAY

The hallway is dimly lit and is made entirly out of wood.
There is a stairway at the end of the hallway.

SCOTT arrives on the hallway via the stairs. He then starts
to walk down the hallway looking at the numbers on the
doors. He finally arrives at 132 and knocks on the door.
When it opens, MEL opens it up. A look of realization
crosses Scott's face.

                       MEL
      (disappointed)
Oh shit..

                       SCOTT
I'm sorry..I, uh..

                       MEL
I was hoping you wouldn't show up.
Come in.

Scott looks surprised as he follows her in.

INT. MEL'S APARTMENT - DAY

The apartment is neat, but sadly underfurnished. There is
little decorative items and much of the furniture is heavily
used.

We see SCOTT standing alone, looking around. MEL walks in
carrying the Biker's wallet. She is looking down at it and
is rumaging through its contents.

                       MEL
      (still rumaging)
The bastard was cheap. All he had
was two tens.

Mel looks up and hands Scott one of the tens. Scott looks at
it with surprise and then looks at Mel.

                       SCOTT
      (nervous)
Uh.. Actually, thats not what I..

                       MEL
      (offended)
What do I look like to you? You
think you can just come in here
and get whatever you want from me?

19.

There's is moment of shocked silence.

                       SCOTT
      (embarassed)
What I was trying to say was I
never meant to come here I was
trying to find someone else.

Now a short embarassed silence.

                       MEL
      (embarassed)
Um.. sorry. I thought.. It's just
I'm used to people coming here
and..

                       SCOTT
Yeah, I'm sorry to give you that
impression.

There is an awkward silence as the two of them avoid eye
contact.

                       SCOTT
Well, I guess I'll just go then.

                       MEL
Wait!

Scott stops and turns back around.

                       MEL (CONT'D)
Thanks for what you did last
night.

                       SCOTT
No problem.

Mel watches him as he opens the door and leaves.

INT. BRYANT'S OFFICE - DAY

We see a neat and orderly office with many file cabinets and
a large desk.

BRYANT sits in a large office chair looking at several files
on his desk. The KENT on the other end.

                       BRYANT
      (monotone)
Detective Peter Bryant.

20.

                       KENT (V.O.)
      (through the phone)
Hey Pete, my guys just saw that
Martin kid up at the King of Clubs
Club.

Bryant lifts his head and takes interest in the
conversation.

                       BRYANT
      (eagerly)
Really? And?

                       KENT (V.O.)
      (through the phone)
Well, it appears that he goes up
there everynight. Apparently, his
parents died a couple years ago in
a bad car crash and he goes up
there to drink his pain away.

                       BRYANT
Whatever. Get the bar tender up
here and question him on everthing
he knows about Scott Martin and
Jerry Caldwell.

                       KENT (V.O.)
      (through the phone)
You got it.

Bryant hangs up the phone and leans back in his chair.

                       BRYANT
      (to himself)
Alright, Mr. Martin, who are you?

INT. A DARK ROOM - DAY

The room is extremely dark with no windows or any other
light source. A dark unknown FIGURE sits in a large chair.
We cannot see his head, only his body which displays little
movement except for the occasional hand gesture.

                       FIGURE
Soon. Soon, my sweet. There's
nothing standing in your way. Soon
you shall serve your purpose.

The CAMERA pans across the room. We see two glowing eyes on
a huge shadowy figure.

21.

EXT. A PHONE TERMINAL AT THE PARK - DAY

We see SCOTT standing at a pay-phone with the receiver to
his ear. We hear the ring. Scott is looking around. Finally
TERRY answers the phone.

                       TERRY (V.O.)
      (through the phone)
Hello?

                       SCOTT
      (quickly)
Terry? It's Scott.

                       TERRY (V.O.)
      (through the phone)
Scott? Oh man, I heard what
happened. Are you okay?

                       SCOTT
I'm alright. Listen, can I come
over? I've got no where else to
go.

                       TERRY (V.O.)
      (through the phone)
Of course! Whatever you need.

                       SCOTT
Thanks, besides, I have something
to tell you.

                       TERRY (V.O.)
      (through the phone)
Hey, somebody's at the door. We'll
talk when you get here, aight?

                       SCOTT
See ya.

Scott hangs up the phone and walks off the screen.

EXT. OUTSIDE THE KING OF CLUBS CLUB - DAY

We see CARTER, LEON, and several others walking toward the
front door of the club. Right before they get to the front,
Leon pulls Carter aside away from the others.

                       LEON
      (silently)
Listen Carter, you had better be
right about this guy. We can't
risk being caught trying to find
            (MORE)

22.

                       LEON (cont'd)
him. If those things find us..

                       CARTER
      (silently)
Hey, don't you trust me? They
pointed me to the shop.

                       LEON
      (silently)
Of course I trust you. But they
get to him first, this will all be
for nothing.

                       CARTER
      (silently)
We'll find him.

They enter the club followed by the rest.

INT. THE KING OF CLUBS CLUB - DAY

LEON and CARTER enter followed by the rest of their friends.
The club is completely empty. The CAMERA pans across the
club showing the emptyiness. Carter and Leon look at each
other. Carter sports a confused and nervous expression,
while Leon looks irritated. They turn and leave.

INT. TERRY'S APARTMENT - DAY

We see a relatively neat and quite retro apartment. Terry is
obviously well off financially. There is a large sliding
glass window that opens up to the balcony. The large blinds
on the window are open and light is pouring in, giving it a
very friendly feel.

SCOTT enters cautiously and looks around.

                       SCOTT
      (shouting)
Terry!?

Scott pauses for a minute and looks around some more.

                       SCOTT
      (shouting)
Terry? You here?

Scott begins to wander the apartment. He walks by the
bedroom and notices the door is slightly ajar and it is
black inside. He walks toward it and slowly pulls it open.

23.

The CAMERA swithes to a view inside the room looking out. We
see Scott open the door about half way and then his eyes
widen in fear.

INT. IN BRYANT'S CAR - DAY

BRYANT is driving his BMW on the highway and his partner,
KENT, sits in the passenger seat.

                       KENT
Hey, thanks for picking me up.
Those squad cars aren't near as
nice as your ride.

                       BRYANT
What'd you get out of the Bar
Tender?

                       KENT
Not much I'm afraid. He says
Martin used to have a friend down
on Main place but he doesn't know
if their still close.

                       BRYANT
Main Place, huh? That's a
surprise. What on Caldwell?

                       KENT
Nothin'. He says Caldwell and
Martin came in on the same night
sometimes but never spoke.

Both of them are silent for a moment.

                       KENT
You beleive 'im?

                       BRYANT
No, but there's nothing else we
can do about that.

                       KENT
There's something else. Earlier
today, Martin asked for the
address of a girl named Emily
Broody.

                       BRYANT
Emily Broody? As in the Broody
Firm?

24.

                       KENT
You know her?

                       BRYANT
Sort of. My ex-wife works for her
father in England. He a big shot
lawyer with a lot of ties in the
British underworld. I heard his
daughter hitched a ride to the
U.S. some months ago and her
father has a huge sum for the one
who brings her back.

                       KENT
Hey, what do ya know. We could
solve a crime and get rich with
the same gig.

                       BRYANT
Beleive me, Kent, you don't wanna
get even close to dealing with a
guy like Charles Broody. It's no
wonder she ran away. Let's start
with Martin's rich friend. You got
his address?

                       KENT
Yeah, 45 Main Place.

Bryant steps on the gas and the RPM's rev up and the car
shoots off the screen.

INT. TERRY'S APARTMENT - DAY

We see SCOTT backing away from the door. The CAMERA is at an
angle where can see both Scott's back and the door to the
bedroom. Slowly the door begins to open up more and a snout
comes through the doorway. As Scott continues to back up,
the creature continues to lurk through the doorway. Finally,
we see it for the first time. It is a large cat like
creature, almost pitch black, except for a few dark grey
stripes on its back. It eyes Scott with hatred. Scott stops
and stares back. The creature opens its large mouth and
roars.

Scott turns and bolts for the door. The creature moves with
lightning quick reflexes and cuts him off about halfway.
Scott stops suddenly and quickly begins to look for a
weapon. He sees a pool cue hanging on the wall. He lunges
for the pool table. The creature heaves itself onto the
table with a single jump. As it lands, it whips around and
snarls at Scott. Scott keeps running and slides on the

25.

hardwood floor under the table. He quickly grabs a cue and
rolls back under as a massive claws shreds the other cues,
leaving a chunk of the wall missing. Scott rolls out from
under the table and gets up and spins to face the creature.

They stare at each other for a moment and Scott slowly
begins to back up to the door. Suddenly the creature pounces
at him. Scott swings the cue and hits the creature in the
neck, but the creature scratches his arm. He looks down at
his wounded arm. there is no blood and the skin is not
broken. Instead, there are four red scratch marks. He looks
back at the creature that is quickly recovering from its
hit. Scott breaks the cue on the wall and stabs the
creauture with the sharpest end. The creature shreiks and
goes limp. There is no blood.

Scott stares at the corpse for a minute. Suddenly there's a
knock on the door. Scott spins to face it.

                       BRYANT (V.O.)
      (through the door)
Mr. Ficher?

Scott whirls around to look at the creature, but it's gone.
Scott looks quickly from side to side, panicking.

                       BRYANT (V.O.)
      (through the door)
Mr. Ficher, we'd like to ask you a
few questions.

Scott notices the sliding glass door that leads to the
balcony. He runs to it and throws it open. He looks down.
He is several stories above the street.

INT. THE HALLWAY OUTSIDE OF TERRY'S APARTMENT - DAY

We see BRYANT and KENT standing outside of the door to
Terry's apartment. We hear the scrape of the sliding glass
door and a thud as it meets the wall. Bryant and Kent look
at each other.

                       BRYANT
What was that?

                       KENT
      (shrugging)
Check it out?

Bryant doesn't answer. Instead, he draws his pistol and
wheels around and kicks the door in. Kent draws his own gun
and they enter the apartment.

26.

INT. TERRY'S APARTMENT - DAY

BRYANT and KENT enter the apartment and immediately split
up. Kent heads deeper into the apartment, while Bryant
heads straight for the balcony window.
