FADE IN:

INT. BEDROOM - DAY |
Jake is seen lying sleeping in bed. Lying seperately yet in
the same bed is Audrey with the covers draped over her. The
room is cramped with clothes and nick knacks thrown
everywhere. The room is in disarray just like his life. On
his nightstand is a very old pocket sized film camera. |
JAKE
(narrative)
This is me. My name is Jake
Rollins. I am twenty-two years
old and just graduated from
college. I moved in with my
cousin, my old college roommate,
and his girlfriend. I'm a happy
singleton |
Jake's cell phone rings |
JAKE
(picking up the
phone)
Hello? Yes mom I know what time
it is. I know. God, I've spent
the last month applying for jobs.
Mom (pause) mom, I'm not having
this conversation right now. Why?
(looking at his alarm clock)
Its 8 o'clock in the morning thats
why.
(frusterated)
Yes, I know. Yea I'm wasting my
life. LIsten, I gotta go, I'll
talk to you later. Bye |
Audrey rolls over in bed and sits up |
JAKE
(looking at her)
Hey, go back to sleep. Its early |
AUDREY
(sliding her pants
back on)
No, I should get going. I still
have to take my brother to camp |
2.
JAKE
Oh, that starts today? |
AUDREY
Yea. Want to grab lunch later. |
JAKE
Sure, the usual place? |
JAKE
(grabbing his
camera from the
nightstand)
Hey, turn around |
Audrey turns around and strikes an awkward pose |
Audrey leaves |
JAKE
(Calling out to
her)
Audrey, your purse! |
AUDREY
(grabbing the
purse)
Thanks |
Audrey drops the purse to the ground and the contents spill
out everywhere. Quickly, Jake and Audrey put the contents
back into the pures when Jake comes across a piece of paper
with Sam written on it along with a phone number |
JAKE
(Looking at the
paper)
Hey now, who is this? |
3.
AUDREY
oh, someone I met at the library |
JAKE
So the singletons are done? |
AUDREY
Hardly. I love not having to deal
with walking penises. Present
company excluded |
AUDREY
Yea yea, see you at one? |
JAKE
(crawling back
into bed)
Yea, I'm goin back to bed |
Audrey leaves |
INT. LIVING ROOM - DAY |
Jakes college roommate Brian and his girlfriend Rachael are
sitting on the couch eating breakfast. His cousin Justin is
standing at the counter eating and reading the newspaper.
Jake walks out of his bedroom. |
JUSTIN
(To Jake)
Its about time, its ten O'clock |
4.
JUSTIN
(walking out the
front door)
Well, I have to get to work. You
know what that is? |
Jake walks to the kitchen and pours himself a glass of
juice. He walks back towards his room with the glass. |
BRIAN
(To Jake)
Where are you going? |
JAKE
Rechecking job websites. I need
something |
RACHAEL
But you've been applying for
months. I dont know what more
Justin wants out of you |
JAKE
He wants what every body else
wants, to ditch writing and focus
on monetary accumulation |
BRIAN
Would you rather be a starving
artist? |
JAKE
I'm not an artist... I just want
to write |
JAKE
(after pausing for
a few moments)
It might not make a lot of sense
to you guys, but money... it just
doesnt mean a lot to me. I just
want to live my life. |
BRIAN
You need money to live man. Thats
reality |
5.
RACHAEL
Listen, there are plenty of part
time jobs out there, why not just
pick up one of them? |
JAKE
Its just...dealing with people and
all. Its not my strong point.
I...I just want to avoid something
like that. |
Brian tosses the football to jake as he finishes his juice
and puts the cup in the sink. Jake then walks into the
bathroom and turns on the shower as Brian and Rachael curl
up on the couch |
INT. JAKE'S ROOM - DAY |
Jake is sitting at his computer looking over his Resume when
Brian walks in carrying the football. |
JAKE
(Barely noticing)
Hey... what do you need? |
BRIAN
Just wanted to see if you wanted
to throw the football |
JAKE
(going crazy)
I can't, I cant. I'm busy |
BRIAN
Dude, you've been at it for months
non stop. You need a break. |
JAKE
(rubbing his
forehead)
I know, I know. You're right.
I've got time. |
BRIAN
(tossing him the
football)
Well get your shoes on and lets go |
Brian exits |
6.
EXT. DRIVEWAY/STREET OUTSIDE CONDO - DAY |
Brian and Jake are tossing the football outside |
BRIAN
Hows the job search going? |
JAKE
Terrible, I've applied everywhere.
You dont work today? |
BRIAN
Nope, got to work the weekend
shift though |
JAKE
That sucks. Where's Rachael? |
BRIAN
She took off a few minutes ago,
had some errands to run |
BRIAN
(waving his arm
for Jake to go
deep)
Hey, go long! |
Jake takes off down the parking lot as Brian releases the
ball. As the ball falls to the ground, Jake takes a tumble
on the concrete. He gets up brushing off the palms of his
hands and he looks at Brian who is kneeled on the ground
laughing hysterically. |
JAKE
(throwing the ball
back to Brian as
he smiles)
Shut up |
JAKE
It isn't like that man |
7.
BRIAN
Why not? Come on, you know shes
hot |
JAKE
Yea but I don't see her that way |
JAKE
Like you see Rachael, I couldn't
date her |
BRIAN
(inappropriate
gestures)
Who said anything about dating,
just have some, you know, benefits |
JAKE
I'm not like that man |
BRIAN
I'd be all over her. |
JAKE
You have a girlfriend |
BRIAN
Yea, I know. She wouldn't have to
know |
JAKE
You wouldn't do that to Rachael,
you love her |
BRIAN
But she spends what, four nights a
week here and you've never made a
move? |
BRIAN
So you have a georgous girl
sleeping half naked in your bed
and you never do anything? |
8.
JAKE
You wouldn't understand man. Hows
Rachael |
BRIAN
Shes good but can you keep a
secret? |
JAKE
Katie.....Wilson? That girl you
dated before Rachael? The one
that started to... |
JUSTIN
(Cutting him off)
Yea yea yea. Well, I emailed her
a couple days ago. Turns out she
lives here in town |
JAKE
(Shocked)
You did what? |
BRIAN
Hell no, don't you tell her either |
JAKE
You do remember what Katie did to
you right? |
BRIAN
Geez man that was three years ago.
A lot can change in three years. |
JAKE
Yea, like meeting a great girl |
BRIAN
Dude, its not like I'm cheating on
Rachael with Katie, I just want to
see her |
9.
BRIAN
You don't understand man... I
have Rachael, and I love her.
Seriously, I love her very much.
But thats all I have. Rachael and
I, we do everything together. I
can't go anywhere without her. I
just want to be able to go out
like you and Audrey do, no sexual
tension, just as friends. |
BRIAN
what do I do about Rachael? |
JAKE
Tell her! I'm late for lunch! |
Jake quickly runs into the house and grabs his wallet and
keys, hops into his car as he shoves his wallet into his
pocket. Quickly he turns the key but the car doesnt start. |
Jake keeps trying to no avail. |
INT. RESTAURANT - DAY |
Audrey is seated with just a glass of water in front of her
when Jake enters and looks around to see her. Audrey gets
out of her seat and waves for Jake to come join her. He
does |
JAKE
Hey, I'm so sorry my car wouldn't
start again |
AUDREY
Its okay, I figured thats what had
happened. |
VERONICA WAITRESS
(approaches table)
What can I get you to drink sir? |
10.
VERONICA WAITRESS
Okay, can I start you guys off
with any appetizers? |
AUDREY
Not today, thank you |
VERONICA WAITRESS
Okay, I'll be right back with your
water |
JAKE
Hows your brother liking church
camp? |
AUDREY
He likes it fine, I just don't
like driving him. |
JAKE
Now is it the fact that its at a
church or that you have to get up
early to take him? |
AUDREY
Oh, its purely the driving. I've
accepted the fact that he goes to
church but this is supposed to be
my winter off. |
JAKE
No college student gets a winter
off |
AUDREY
I'm not taking classes, so why do
I still have to get up early? |
JAKE
Family obligations, you check your
grades yet? |
JAKE
Wow, even english lit? |
11.
AUDREY
Yea, why do you sound so
surprised? |
JAKE
Well half way through the semester
you didn't think you would pass
the class, now you have an A. |
AUDREY
Yea well the professor didn't post
any of the grades from any of the
tests for the entire semester
until the very last day so no one
would know what they have in the
class. |
JAKE
Yea well I told you it would be
fine. |
Half way through Jake's sentence a couple walks by hand in
hand. The female(Jen) turns and looks back at the table. |
JEN
(Turning to the
table)
Oh my God, Jake? |
JAKE
Yea...
(Surprised)
Jen? Hey! What are you doing
here? |
JEN
I just moved back to town, what
are you doing here? |
JAKE
Me too, I moved in with my cousin.
You back with your parents? |
JEN
Yea, for the time being. You
remember Todd? |
JAKE
(disappointed)
Oh, yea. Whats up man? |
12.
TODD
(Speaking slowly,
he is toasted)
Nothin much man, how are you? |
JAKE
I'm okay. Uhh how the band
coming? |
TODD
Oh man, I don't play with them
anymore man |
JAKE
Oh... so what brings you to town? |
The waitress arrives carrying Jake's glass of water. She
sets it down in front of him |
TODD
Oh man, I'm playing a set over at
the Jave Cafe man |
VERONICA WAITRESS
I'm sorry, did you say you were
playing at the Jave Cafe tonight? |
TODD
Oh yea...you should stop by too...
bring some friends. |
VERONICA WAITRESS
(flirting heavily
with Todd)
Were you in a band called Mental
Incapacity? |
TODD
Yea, played guitar for them till
we broke up. |
VERONICA WAITRESS
Oh my god, I so saw you guys play
out in California. You guys like
rocked |
TODD
Yea man, you should stop by
tonight. |
13.
VERONICA WAITRESS
(smiling and
flirting)
Oh, I'll be there |
Waitress walks away |
TODD
(To Jake)
You know where it is? |
JAKE
Oh, I think we went there last
week.
(To Audrey)
Didn't we? |
AUDREY
Yea, I think thats it |
JAKE
Well, I'm playin there tonight
man. You guys should stop by |
JAKE
I'm not doing anything
(To Audrey)
You wanna go? |
AUDREY
(taken aback)
um.....Sure |
TODD
Well, I'll see you guys there man |
JAKE
Yea, We'll see you two there |
JEN
Oh, I'm not going. I still have a
lot of unpacking to do. |
TODD
See you tonight man. |
14.
Todd and Jen leave. As they walk away they are visabbly
arguing. Jen is waving her hands and is enraged that Todd
would openly flirt with another woman. Audrey tries to get
Jake's attention. He is obviously distracted by Jen. |
AUDREY
Jake......Jake......Jake? You
okay? |
JAKE
Huh? yea yea I'm fine |
AUDREY
You don't look so good, you want
to get out of here? |
AUDREY
No its okay, you want to go back
to my place? |
JAKE
Yea, thats sounds good. |
Jake and Audrey exit leaving a dollar on the table |
INT. AUDREY'S ROOM - DAY |
Audrey runs up the stairs before Jake can catch up. After
Jake reaches the top of the stairs and opens the door to see
Audrey rushing to clean up her room with an armful of
clothes. |
JAKE
Wow, didn't expect this. |
AUDREY
Okay okay, I'm a little bit of a
slob |
Jake pulls out his small camera and takes a picture of the
mess |
JAKE
(smiling and then
giving her a hand)
Looks like you need a hand.
(Starts helping by
grabbing a hamper
and throwing
clothes in it)
15.
JAKE (cont'd)
Here, throw those in here |
AUDREY
(throwing the
clothes in the
hamper)
Okay, I've known you what...four
years? |
JAKE
Yea, since I started college |
AUDREY
Okay, so who are Jen and Todd? |
AUDREY
Oh come on, you couldn't take your
eyes off her the entire time. |
JAKE
I never told you about her? |
JAKE
(At her computer
desk covered with
hundreds of
pieces of paper.)
Okay, now whats with all the
random pieces of paper? |
AUDREY
Don't throw those out, I want
them. And stop changing the
subject! |
JAKE
You could just write them on three
by five cards and keep them in a
box like a normal person. |
AUDREY
Now what would be the poetic
nature behind that? |
16.
JAKE
You mean besides organization?
Besides, they aren't your words,
they are someone elses. |
AUDREY
(hitting him with
a pillow)
Stop it and spill it. |
JAKE
(Helping her make
her bed)
Okay, You remember when I told you
about being in theatre in high
school? |
JAKE
Okay, well in the summer before my
senior year I went to a theatre
conference. Very big, they take
one person from each high school
in the state. |
AUDREY
Yea, I did a story for the paper
on that my senior year. |
JAKE
Yea, well, when you get there they
split everyone up into groups of
10. Jen and I were the only ones
from this area in the group so we
hit it off. |
AUDREY
Okay....then what? |
JAKE
Well, we spent the week talking
about pretty much everything.
Turns out she was little miss
popular in school... |
17.
JAKE
(laughing)
Not by any stretch of the
imagination |
JAKE
Well one night a few months after
the conference was over her and I
went for a walk around her
neighborhood... you know, just to
catch up. |
AUDREY
Okay... so whats the big deal? |
JAKE
(disappointed)
Well, I just always thought that I
missed something. Like she wanted
me to do something. |
AUDREY
You let that pass by? How could
you do that? |
JAKE
(running his hands
through his hair
and rubbing his
forehead)
I..I don't know. I just, I just
didn't know what to do. |
AUDREY
You must have seen her after that,
what happened? |
JAKE
Well, we got together once a week
or so and we talked online but... |
AUDREY
But it never came again right? |
AUDREY
So why didn't you just ask her
out? You know, like a normal guy? |
18.
JAKE
I wanted to but a few months later
she started dating some college
drop out turned musician. |
JAKE
Yea. Him and I never saw eye to
eye so Jen made a choice. She
decided he was more worth it than
me, So we had a falling out. |
AUDREY
Even if you did, that was four
years ago. A lot changes in four
years. |
JAKE
Yea, we tried reconciling a few
times. Never worked out. |
JAKE
I know it sounds like I'm being
judgemental but she can do so much
better than him. |
JAKE
No, no it was never about me. I
mean, you saw her today. Didn't
she look completely run down?
She's looked that way ever since
they started dating. |
AUDREY
I don't know, I don't know what
she looked like before hand. |
JAKE
(Going to her
computer and
logging onto his
email)
Here |
19.
AUDREY
Thats the same girl? |
JAKE
Yea, just over four years ago |
AUDREY
God she was beautiful. Why did
she stick with him for four years? |
JAKE
Rock star persona, she always
wanted to be famous. When she's
with him, she lives a rock star
life I guess. |
Jake's cell phone beeps at him meaning he is receiving a
text message. He opens his phone and its from an old
theater friend names Kelly. |
JAKE
Oh wow... hey you remember my
friend Kelly? |
AUDREY
Yea, Kelly McNeil, What about her? |
JAKE
Her sister just got back in town,
we should invite them along
tonight. |
AUDREY
Thats fine I guess, she just makes
me uneasy. |
JAKE
Yea well, last time you two were
together I seem to remember a
heated discussion. |
JAKE
She is just too conservative. I
don't know, its like she has her
mind made up...and nothin will
change it. |
JAKE
Yea, well she is too conservative
for me and you're too liberal for
me but I still get along with both
(MORE)
20.
AUDREY
Yea, its fine, You want to call
them? |
JAKE
Nah, its almost time to get over
to the coffee shop anyway. |
AUDREY
We still have over an hour till
the show starts... |
JAKE
Well yea but by the time we get to
Kelly's house, through rush hour
traffic and down to the restaurant
we might be late. |
AUDREY
Okay, thanks for helping with my
room. |
Audrey grabs her purse and follows Jake out the door. She
clumsily runs back into the room looking around frantically
before finally finding her purse and leaving for good. |
EXT. KELLY'S HOUSE - NIGHT |
Jake and Audrey drive up in Audrey's car. They get out and
ring the doorbell. Kelly answers. Jake snaps a picture |
KELLY
(Smiling)
Geez.....Hey
(Giving Jake a hug)
What are you guys doing here? |
Mellissa comes to the door looking sexy in a classy way. |
KELLY
Oh, Jake. Do you remember my
sister Mellissa? |
JAKE
Yea hey, whats bring you back to
town city girl? |
21.
MELLISSA
I graduated early. How are you? |
JAKE
I'm good. How do you like New
York?
(turning to Audrey)
Mellissa, this is my friend Audrey |
MELLISSA
Nice to meet you. New York is
great though, what are you guys
doing here? |
JAKE
Actually, we are on our way over
to a coffee house to see a friend
of mine play. Wondering if you
two would like to join us. |
MELLISSA
Oh, I wish I could, I still have
a lot of unpacking. |
JAKE
What about you Kelly? |
KELLY
I think I'll pass, I have to get
stuff ready for the party tomorrow
night. |
KELLY
Yea, didn't I text you about that
last week? |
JAKE
Ummm, no. I don't think so. |
KELLY
Oh, well Tuesday we are having a
welcome home party for Mellissa,
you two should stop bye. |
JAKE
Yea, Sounds like fun. Well, we
gotta get goin, see you tomorrow. |
22.
KELLY
(Closing the door)
Bye |
JAKE
(Turning to Audrey)
Well that was pointless |
INT. THE JAVA CAFE - NIGHT |
Audrey and Jake are seated in a coffee house listening to
Todd's acoustic set. Jake takes out his camera and takes a
picture of Todd. The waitress Veronica Miller is seated at
a near by table with two of her friends. As Todd finishes
up his set, Audrey and Jake get ready to leave. Todd walks
over to the table holding his acoustic guitar case. |
TODD
(sitting down on
the table)
Hey man, what did you think of the
set man? |
JAKE
It was ummm different. |
TODD
(turning to Audrey)
What did you think? |
Veronica Miller approaches |
VERONICA WAITRESS
(walks by casually
on her way out)
Hey, that was amazing |
TODD
Thanks. Well man, Jen is waitin
for me. I'll catch you two later. |
JAKE
(shaking Todd's
hand)
See ya |
23.
JAKE
(leaning in to
Audrey)
God that was horrid |
JAKE
Now I know why he didn't sing in
his band. |
AUDREY
Good thing it was free |
JAKE
You're telling me. If I had paid
for that I would have killed
myself. |
AUDREY
I would have done that for you. |
JAKE
Lets get out of here. |
Jake and Audrey leave their half empty cups on the table and
throw in a dollar each before getting up and leaving. As
they exit, you hear a younger woman get on the stage and
state the she plans to read some poetry. |
EXT. OUTSIDE JAVA CAFE - NIGHT |
Jake and Audrey walk outside to leave. Audrey is getting
the keys from her purse when Jake pulls on her arm. |
Audrey turns to see Todd making out and groping Veronica
against the wall outside. Jen drives up in her car. |
JEN
(Getting out of
the car)
What the hell are you doing? |
Todd doesn't notice as Jen walks up behind him and slaps him |
Todd reaches to slap Jen as Jake grabs his hand at the top
and throws him to the ground. |
24.
JEN
(slapping him
repeatedly)
What are you doing? |
Jake pulls Jen off Todd and Jen goes into Audrey's arms as
Jake picks Todd up. |
JAKE
(To Veronica)
Get the hell out of here |
Veronica hands Todd a small piece of paper |
VERONICA WAITRESS
Call me |
JEN
Lying cheating bastard! |
TODD
Aww Jen, let me explain. |
TODD
Man this has nothin to do with you |
JEN
(running up and
hitting Todd in
the chest)
You promised! |
JAKE
(pulling Jen off
Todd and into his
arms)
Todd, get the hell out of here! |
Jake holds Jen as they walk over to Audrey's car. |
JAKE
(Wipes the sweat
from her face)
Come here, come here, you're okay |
25.
JEN
He told me he'd never do it again,
he lied to me again! |
JAKE
We should get you out of here, you
want to come back to my place? |
JEN
Do you mind? Todd is probably on
his way to my house right now. |
AUDREY
(after a long
pause... trying
to get them to
move along)
You ride with her, I'll follow
you. |
JEN
Okay
(handing Jake the
keys)
Will you drive? |
Jake opens the passenger door for Jen to get in and then
gets in the drivers side. |
INT. CONDO - NIGHT |
Jake, Audrey, and Jen enter through the front door to find
no one home. |
JEN
(walking around
the living room)
This is where you live? |
JEN
Its nice, can I use the bathroom? |
JAKE
(Pointing to the
bathroom)
Yea, right over there |
26.
Jen leaves for the bathroom and turns on the faucet. |
AUDREY
You guys going to be okay? |
AUDREY
Listen, she's been through a lot
tonight okay? Just...don't do
anything. |
JAKE
I know what she's going though.
(pause)
I'm a good guy remember? |
AUDREY
(giving him a hug)
Okay, I'll talk to you tomorrow
then okay? |
JAKE
Okay, sorry about this. |
AUDREY
(smiling)
Its alright. Just make sure she
is okay. |
Audrey leaves as Jake walks into the kitchen and gets out
two glasses. He pours himself and Jen a glass of water..
After a few moments, Jen comes out, walks over, and sits on
the couch. |
JAKE
(handing her a
glass)
Hey, feeling any better? |
JAKE
Listen, about earlier... |
JEN
Don't, I just don't want to talk
about him tonight. |
27.
JAKE
(looking into her
eyes)
Okay. |
After a few speachless moments, Jen leans over and kisses
Jake pulls back. He stands up and walks to the kitchen
flabbergasted and unsure how to react. |
JEN
Dammit, I'm, I'm sorry. |
JAKE
Listen, my room is in there.
(points to his
room, acting
disappointed)
Why don't you try to get some
sleep. |
JAKE
(walking over to
Jen)
Please, just get some sleep, Ill
see you in the morning |
JEN
(Getting up and
walking to his
room)
No... please lets just talk about
this. |
JAKE
Talk about what? Its fine... and
I understand why you did that but
I just think you need some sleep. |
JEN
(taking her glass,
she is visibly
upset)
Fine... goodnight |

JEN
(taking a sip and
looking back)
You okay? |
RACHAEL
(curling up on the
couch with him)
Okay, whats wrong? |
JAKE
Don't worry about it |
RACHAEL
Aww come on, you're the closest
thing to girly gossip that I have. |
JAKE
Yea well, I've got a friend in my
room that just came on to me after
she caught her boyfriend of 4
years making out with some other
girl... |
RACHAEL
Ouch, you didn't do anything did
you? |
JAKE
I pulled away and made her go to
bed, thats why I'm out here. |
RACHAEL
Its not Audrey is it? |
RACHAEL
(Getting up to
leave)
Listen, I don't know how well you
know this person, but chances are
she would have done that to

anyone. Just don't do anything
you're going to regret. |
JAKE
(looking at her)
I won't |
RACHAEL
One day you will find someone that
makes you happy, If I can, anyone
can. |
JAKE
Yea, you got lucky. For some
reason it just seems like I won't
ever find that person. |
RACHAEL
Jake, you're 22... forever is a
long ways away. She is out
there... you just have to wait for
the timing to be right. |
JAKE
Yea... timing sucks a lot of the
time cause it feels like I've been
waiting forever to find someone. |
RACHAEL
Hey, you're one of the few good
guys out there... I doubt you will
be looking much longer. |
RACHAEL
You will find someone... I
promise. Unfortunately , I've got
to get up early. I'll see you
tomorrow. |
JAKE
Alright, good night. |
INT. CONDO - DAY |
Jake is up in the kitchen making eggs bacon and pancakes. He
puts a couple pancakes some eggs and some bacon on a plate.
Justin walks out of his room. |

JAKE
Hey.
(pause)

JUSTIN
Oh, yea thanks
(Pause)

pain, but I need rent. |
JAKE
I'm trying man, there isn't much
out there right now. |
JUSTIN
So get something part time. I
can't make my mortgage without
your rent, I didn't get the bonus
at work yet so I'm pressed as it
is. |
JAKE
I'll go out today okay? Just let
me get Jen up and out of here. |
JUSTIN
Yea well maybe you should spend
less time worrying about your
girlfriends and more time worrying
about your responsibilities. |
JAKE
I am worried about my
responsibilities! |
JUSTIN
Then how do you justify going out
last night and spending money that
you don't have! |
JAKE
I spent two dollars last night...
(Phone rings)
Hold on... |
Jake answers his phone |
31.
JAKE
Hello? This is Jake Rollins. Yes

couple weeks ago and sent it in an
email as well. Well thank you
sir. An interview?
(grabbing a pen
and writing on a
pad)
Tuesday. 3 O'clock. Thank you Mr
Bailey, I'll see you then. Bye |
Jake hangs up the phone and goes back to making breakfast
for everyone(5 plates) |
JUSTIN
(as Brian and
Rachael walk out
of their room)
Who was that? |
JAKE
That was a Mr. George Bailey,
editor for The Florida Fishing
Gazzette. I have a job interview. |
BRIAN
Really? Thats great man. |
JAKE
Yea, Sports writing, right up my

BRIAN

JAKE
Yea, their website said they are a
branch of a larger publishing
company. |
RACHAEL
Well, thats great Jake,
congratulations! |
BRIAN
Man... is fishing even a sport? |
JAKE

JEN

How'd you sleep? |
JAKE
Fine, oh here, brought this for
you. |
JAKE
Listen, I was up all night trying
to think of a way to tell you
this... |
JAKE
you're a, you're a fantastic girl.
I know the past few years haven't
been easy but I still look at you
the same way I did five years ago
when we fist met.
(smiling)
You're still an angel. You are
still the girl guys like me dream
about. It doesn't matter to me
whats gone wrong in your
life...You're still the angel and
you will always be that angel. No
matter what happens, I'm right
here, I'm not letting you go
again. I can't. |
33.
JEN
Jake I... with everything that
happened last night and our past I
just don't think talking about you
and me right now is a good idea. |
JAKE
No no... I understand... I just
needed you to know how I see
you... you haven't changed to me. |
JEN
(leaning up and
hugging him)
Thanks, I needed that. |
JAKE
(handing her a
plate)
Here, eat up before it gets cold |

JEN
(taking the plate)

JAKE
Oh yea, ummm, let me grab it. |
Jake exits as Jen reaches over and picks up her phone and
looks at it. Jake walks back in. |
JEN
Nothing, seventeen missed calls. |
JAKE
(taking her phone
from her)
Don't worry about him now okay?
Eat some breakfast, get a shower,
and then take some time to think. |
Jake gets up and grabs some clothes from his closet. |
34.
JAKE
I'm going to grab a shower okay?
You just relax. |
Jake walks out |
INT. JAKE;S ROOM - DAY |
Jake walks out of the bathroom dressed as he dries his hair

JEN

JAKE

JEN

guess? Yea yea. The interview is
tomorrow at 3.
(Jen drives back
up)
Oh hey, can I call you back? okay,
talk to you later. Bye |
JEN
(looking out her
passenger window)
Hey...you want to go for a walk? |
EXT. ON A RESIDENTIAL STREET - DAY |
Jake and Jen are walking down the center of a residential
upscale street |
JAKE
(Backing Up and
pulling out his
old camera)
Stand in the middle of the street. |
JEN
Oh God, you still have that old
thing? |
Jen strikes a series of movie star poses as Jake takes a
couple of pictures |
36.
JAKE
(smiling)
Just old fashioned |
Odd Silence |
JEN
Do you mind if I ask you
something? |
JEN
We've known each other for how
long? 5 years? |
JEN
You remember after the conference?
You came over to my place. |
JAKE
Yea, we got lost in the woods
behind your house... by the time
we found your house again it was
dark out. |
Jen smiles and shakes her head Yes |
JAKE
Yea... it was hot as hell out. |
JEN
Well, why didn't you do anything? |
JAKE
(confused)
Do anything? |
JEN
Yea you know, any other guy would
have tried to kiss me or something
but you didn't. |
37.
JAKE
I, I wanted to....I just didn't
want you to think that I got us
lost for that. |
JEN
Lost? I was never lost... I grew
up in those woods. I knew exactly
where we were |
JEN
You know? What do you mean you
know? |
JAKE
Jen, we walked by the back end of
your house half a dozen times.
Hell, your little brother waved at
us. |
JEN
okay....Well after that why didn't
you ask me out? |
JAKE
Honestly
(stalling)
I just wasn't ready to be in a
relationship. |
Jen just stares at him |
JAKE
Alright. Before I met you I was
in a relationship with a really
great girl. |
JAKE
I..I don't know. A month into it,
it just got to the point where
everything she did annoyed me to
(MORE)

JAKE (cont'd)
no end. The way she talked, the
way she ate, just the sound of her
voice drove me up the wall. |
JEN
So thats why you never asked me
out? Because you had one bad
experience? |
JAKE
It wasn't a bad experience... she
really was a great girl... and I
didn't want it to happen with you.
I mean, I really enjoyed being
with you, I didn't want it to end
up that way. |
JEN
If you really liked me, you would
have given me a chance. |
JAKE
(saying it
definitivly)
I wanted to, I...I really did. I
just thought something was wrong
with me |
JAKE
Now what? Its five years later
and we are in the same place we
were back then. |
JEN
(running her hand
down his arm)
We don't have to be...
(Jen moves up and
starts to kiss
his neck) |
JAKE
(pushing her away)
God, will you stop, will you just
stop!
(pause)
God, what is wrong with you? |
39.
JEN
(Screaming)
This is what you wanted isn't it?
(pointing down at
the way she is
dressed, very
revealing)
This is what you wanted from me! |
Jake just looks at her for a few moments, then turns and
walks away |
JEN
Don't you walk away from me |
JAKE
(turning to her)
No! That was never what I wanted
from you! I am not Todd, or any
of your other boyfriends. You
want to sleep with them to make
them like you then thats fine but
I know you. I've known you for
years. You think sex is what I
want? I hoped you knew me better
than that by now... |
Jake walks away with Jen in the background standing there. |
INT. MONTAGE - JENS ROOM AND JAKES ROOM - NIGHT |
Musical Montage of Jen and Jake thinking about each other.
Its Jen walking back to her car as Jake walks down the empty
streets in front of many nice houses. Eventually they both
get home and we see Jake sitting on his computer. Jen
sitting in the car in front of her house crying, Todd coming
out and giving her a hug as they are back together and it
ends with Jake laying in bed in a dark room with just the
light from his window lighting his face. |
INT. JAKE'S ROOM - DAY |
Jake is seated at hims computer typing when his cell phone
rings. He answers |

Jake grabs his suit jacket and walks out the door. |
INT. RESTAURANT - DAY |
Jake and Jen are seated eating their meals when Jen finally
breaks the silence. |
JEN
Are you going to talk at all? |
JEN
So you just want to leave things
be? The way they are. Just like
this? |
JAKE
Like what Jen?
(pause)
Listen, I was wrong last night. I
was wrong to think that you were
the same girl I knew five years
ago. But I do know that the Jen I
knew back then isn't the one I
know now.
(pause)
You've changed. I've changed.
What I wanted back then is the
same thing I want now. But I
can't be a rebound guy....not with
you I can't. If you two break up
and you decide, down the road,
that I'm the guy for you then we
take it from there. But I can't
be just the next guy for you. |
JEN
That's what I wanted to talk to
you about. Umm, I talked to Todd
last night. We're going to give
it another shot. |
41.
JAKE
(obviously
disappointed)
Oh |
JEN
We think we have something special
and we don't want to lose it. |
JAKE
He thinks or you think? |
JEN
Listen, I'm sorry it had to happen
this way....but I love him. This
is to cover the meal
(hands Jake a
twenty dollar
bill)
I'm sorry. |
Jen gets up and leaves as Jake just sits there. |
INT. BUSINESS OFFICE - DAY |
Jake enters an office to see a secretary filing her nails
behind the desk. Jake approaches. |
SECRETARY
What can I do for you sir? |
JAKE
I'm Jake Rollins, I've got a three
o'clock meeting with Mr. Bell. |
SECRETARY
Okay, just a minute. |
The secretary gets up and goes into the back office and
comes back a few seconds later. |
JAKE
Mr Bell will see you now, follow
me. |
Jake follows the secretary back into Mr Bell's office. Mr
Bell rises and shakes Jake's hand. |
MR. BELL
Nice to meet ya Jake, Joseph Bell. |
42.
The secretary starts to walk away as Mr Bell reaches over
and grabs her bottom. She jumps a little but lets him pull
her back into her lap, putting one foot on the desk showing
her leg and running her hand down his chest. |
MR. BELL
Hey doll, why don't you go get me
a cup of coffee. |
MR. BELL
You want a cup Jake? |
As she gets up, Mr Bell grabs her bottom again. She walks
out. |
MR. BELL
(watching her walk
back to her desk
off screen)
Perks of the job my boy, perks of
the job. Alright, down to
business. You have your resume? |
JAKE
(Sliding it across
the desk)
Yea, right here |
MR. BELL
(looking over it)
Mmmhmmm, mmmhmmm. Well, you seem
to have a lot of experience for a
recent graduate. |
JAKE
Yes, and here is a copy or an
article I wrote last year on the
schools baseball team. |
MR. BELL
Okay, looks good.
(walking back to
the door)
Misty! Where is my coffee? |
43.
SECRETARY
I'm sorry I'm sorry. Here |
JAKE
(taking it and
spilling some on
his hand)
Owww!! |
SECRETARY
(wiping it off)
Oh god... |
MR. BELL
You know, you're lucky you got a
rack like that or else I woulda
kicked ya to the curb a long time
ago.
(reaches up and
unbuttons the
next button on
her blouse,
showing her bra)
I keep you here to look good, do
that! |
The secretary looks down and ashamed as she starts to walk
out. |
JAKE
(Standing and
grabbing her arm)
Hey, you don't just treat people
like that. |
JAKE
You keep her around for her rack?
Who the hell do you think you are? |
Secretary buttons up her blouse. |
MR. BELL
Okay Okay, you're right. Misty,
thank you for the coffee.
(looking back over
Jake's article)
Now back to your article here Jake |
44.
JAKE
(Relaxing slightly
back in the chair)
Okay, what questions do you have? |
MR. BELL
Yea, just one. Why the hell are
you still sitting in my office?
(Screaming)
Get the hell out of here... or I
will physically toss your bony ass
to the cub myself |
Mr. bell grabs Jake by the collar and helps him to the door
and shoves him out and slams the door behind him. |
SECRETARY
You know how much trouble you just
caused me? Just get out of here. |
JAKE
Caused you? I was just trying to
help. |
SECRETARY
Help? Ill be lucky to keep this
damn job. |
SECRETARY
Yea... unless you are planning on
comin over and taking care of my 3
kids, get the hell out of here. |
Jake Exits |
EXT. AUDREY'S HOUSE - NIGHT |
Jake is sitting at the curb outside of Audrey's house when
Audrey walks out talking on her cell phone. |
AUDREY
Yea...No, thats fine. Yea, I'll
see ya there in a few.
(seeing Jake)
Oh, actually, can you give me a
half hour? Okay, I'll see you

(walking over to
Jake)
45.
AUDREY (cont'd)
Hey, you okay? |
Audrey sits down next to him |
AUDREY
Okay, whats wrong? |
JAKE
I went out to lunch with Jen
today... |
JAKE
And...she is going back to Todd |
AUDREY
She give you a reason or anything? |
JAKE
If she did, would you believe it |
AUDREY
(Shaking her head)
No |
AUDREY
Well you had your interview today,
how'd that go? |
JAKE
Oh, terrible. I'm in the office
with him and the entire time he is
touchin his secretary and talkin
down to her. When I stood up for
her, he threw me out. |
JAKE
Yea, I don't think I got the job. |
46.
AUDREY
(chuckling)
No, I don't think so.
(pause)
Well, I was talking to my uncle
and he said you could have the
job. He said to show up when you
wanted to start and he will take
care of you. |
JAKE
Well, you might as well tell him
I'll take it. I need something
for now. |
AUDREY
I know its not what you want. But
its a magazine job, even if its
just loading trucks. |
AUDREY
Yea. A friend of mine and I are
heading to see a movie, you want
to come with us? |
JAKE
No, I have to head over to Kelly
and Mellissa's still. |
AUDREY
Okay, well, do you want to come
inside for a little bit? |
JAKE
(Standing up)
Nah, I should get going. |
AUDREY
(hugging him)
Okay, call me tomorrow okay? |
INT. KELLY'S HOUSE - NIGHT |
Jake arrives at Kelly's house and knocks on the front door.
Mellissa answers wearing a beautiful yet simple evening
dress. |
47.
MELLISSA
(Smiling)
Hey, come on in. |
MELLISSA
There's food in the kitchen. Soda
and beer in a cooler on the back
porch. |
MELLISSA
Kelly's around here somewhere. |
JAKE
Oh, thanks Mellissa. |
Jake makes his way to the back porch where he finds two
coolers. He opens the first cooler to find it full of soda.
He opens the second cooler and pulls out a beer. He opens
it and heads back into the living room where he finds Kelly
talking with two handsome young men. Kelly notices him and
quickly takes him with her to the other room. |
KELLY
Hey, where is Audrey? |
JAKE
Oh, she couldn't make it. |
KELLY
Thats too bad. You remember
Robert?
(She points to a
guy at the end of
the room) |
Jake turns to look. When he turns back, Kelly is walking
back to the two young men. |
MAN #1
Hey Kel, who was that? |
KELLY
Oh him? He is no one. |
JAKE
(taking a sip)
Great |
48.
Jake turns around to fine Mellissa standing behind him |
MELLISSA
She's amazing isnt she? |
JAKE
Yea, something like that. So why
aren't you being the social
butterfly? Isn't this party for
you? |
MELLISSA
Yea, my parents threw me a party
with a bunch of people I don't
know. |
JAKE
Yea
(pause)
Well how has New York been? I
haven't seen you in what, 5 years? |
MELLISSA
Yea, school has been great though. |
JAKE
Your sister showed me one of your
performances, You're very
talented. |
MELLISSA
(Blushing)
Thanks, how's the writing going? |
JAKE
(laughing it off)
Its going. Trying to get a job. |
MELLISSA
I can't imagine thats any easier
than getting an acting job. |
JAKE
(laughing)
Doubt it. But its a dream, just
like yours |
49.
JAKE
Had an interview today, that
didn't go over too well. |
MELLISSA
I'm sorry to hear that but you are
good, something will come up. |
JAKE
Yea, I'm starting a job tomorrow
as a shipping clerk for a local
magazine. |
MELLISSA
Thats good, at least its kind of
in your field. The only thing
I've been offered is as one of
those phone sex girls. |
JAKE
I don't think thats going to go
over too well with your parents. |
MELLISSA
No, don't think so. |
JAKE
(After a long
pause)
Well, I should really get going. |
JAKE
Yea, I'm just here to make an
appearance |
JAKE
Besides, I have to get up early
tomorrow |
MELLISSA
Okay, well it was great talking to
you. |
50.
Mellissa and Jake both turn to head in opposite directions
when Jake makes up his mind. |
JAKE
(turning around,
nervously
fumbling his
hands around in
his pockets)
Hey, you want to go out to dinner
tomorrow night? |
MELLISSA
Yea, that sounds like fun. |
JAKE
(nervously smiling
and trying not to
stammer.)
Okay, Pick you up at Eight? |
MELLISSA
That sounds nice. I guess I will
see you then. |
INT. JAKE'S ROOM - DAY |
Jake is getting dressed for his first day on the job as he
in on the phone with his mother having the same old
arguement. |
JAKE
(Very distracted)
Yea mom. I know, yes. Listen, I
need to get going. Yes, to my
dead end job. You know what? I
am doing my best. I know, I
should have gone to business
school. Yea yea, I am wasting my
life. Mom, I gotta go. Talk to
you later. Bye. |
Jake grabs his cell phone, wallet, and keys and walks out. |
51.
INT. LIVING ROOM - DAY |
Jake enters from his room into the living room where Brian
and Rachael are having a heated discussion. |
RACHAEL
No, I will not lighten up. I want
to know why the hell you are
talking to her? |
BRIAN
Why are you taking this so
seriously, its not a big deal. |
RACHAEL
Not a big deal? You two dated for
3 years before you met me, I think
I deserve to know why you are
talking to her? |
BRIAN
Jake, will you tell her its not a
big deal! |
RACHAEL
(Turning to Jake)
Did you know about this? |
JAKE
(At the front door)
Yea... |
RACHAEL
Great, thats nice to know. |
Rachael storms out of the room. |
JAKE
(pulling out his
cell phone)
I told you to talk to her. |
Jake stands there waiting for a response. Instead Brian
just lets out one giant scream of rage and walks out on to
the back porch and lights a cigarette. Jake hits Dial as he
closes the front door. |
EXT. JAKE'S CAR - DAY |
Jake exits from his residence while on the phone with
Audrey. |
52.
JAKE
Hey, How are you? No, I'm good.
You still coming over tonight?
(Jake gets into
his car)
You coming over later? Six? Okay
cause I have to pick her up at
eight. Okay, see you then. Bye. |
Jake puts his key into the ignition and turns it. Once
again, the car will not start. He tries again to no avail. |
Jake exits the car and opens the hood. He messes around
under it before going back to try again. His gets back into
his car and has the same problem. He hits the steering
wheel before trying it a third time and it finally catches.
He backs out of his parking spot. |
INT. SMALL WAREHOUSE - DAY |
Jake enters a small, dirty building filled with boxes. He
comes across his new boss moving boxes. |
JAKE
Hello, are you Mr. McNeil? |
MR. MCNEIL
Hey, you must be Jake. |
MR. MCNEIL
Well, pull up a box, I'll go over
everything with you. |
Jake takes a seat on a box. |
MR. MCNEIL
Well this is our shipping
warehouse. Your basic job will
require you to load trucks that
come in for the magazines, check
the vendor invoices, keep a
running book of what comes in and
what goes out. We usually get
anywhere from 4 to 10 trucks in a
given day and each truck usually
takes around half an hour to
complete from check in to
(MORE)
53.
MR. MCNEIL (cont'd)
resealing the truck. Other than
that, you are free to do what you
want when there is no truck. Just
make sure the warehouse is safe
and make sure you lock it up when
you take a lunch or leave for the
day. Your hours will be Monday
through Friday from 9 to 5. You
take your break whenever you have
nothing to do. It is a paid
break. One thing that I am a real
pain about is tidyness. I want
this place to be kept neat at all
times. How does that sound? |
JAKE
That sounds good but, if you don't
mind, how much does this pay? |
MR. MCNEIL
Ten dollars an hour. |
MR. MCNEIL
Okay, well, if you follow me I
will give you the tour of the
property. |
INT. CONDO LIVINGROOM - NIGHT |
Jake enters slowly with Audrey. Obviously in pain. Justin
is sitting in the living room when he enters. |
JUSTIN
Hey, how was work? |
JAKE
(straining)
Guess... |
JUSTIN
When do you get paid? |
JAKE
Next Friday, don't worry you will
get your money. |
54.
RACHAEL
(screaming from
the other room)
What? Get the hell out of here! |
JUSTIN
(Going into his
room)
Here we go again. |
JAKE
They still fighting? |
Jake realizes that Justin is gone as Brian gets pushed out
of his room. |
BRIAN
(Trying to get a
word in edge
wise.)
Just let me explain. |
RACHAEL
(inside the room
throwing crap at
him.)
Just get the hell out. |
Door slam. Brian is covered in random male and female
clothes that Rachael threw at him. |
BRIAN
(turning and
pulling the
excess clothes
off of him.)
Yea...she didn't take this too
well. |
JAKE
Did you break up with her? |
BRIAN
No... I just told her that I was
going to have lunch with my ex. |
BRIAN
Is that wrong of me to say that? |
55.
AUDREY
Should I explain this to him? |
JAKE
Oh man, Think about it, does she
want you talking to your ex
girlfriend? |
BRIAN
I just dont want her to control
me. |
AUDREY
(Trying to follow
the faulty logic)
Okay, now what if she wanted to
see her ex boyfriend again. |
BRIAN
So? She is with me now. |
JAKE
Yea but thats you. She isnt as
secure as you are. |
AUDREY
(turning to Jake)
Are you saying that girls are more
insecure than guys are? |
JAKE
No... I'm saying that before
Brian, Rachael's last boyfriend
cheated on her and she has a damn
good reason to be insecure about
Brian talking to his ex even if we
all know it won't lead to
anything. |
BRIAN
(Walking out the
front door.)
Yea, well maybe her insecurity is
the problem. |
JAKE
(To Audrey)
Just, don't worry about them. They
will figure it out.. Lets go. |
Jake and Audrey enter his room. |
56.
INT. JAKE'S ROOM - NIGHT |
Jake and Audrey enter. Jake sits down on the bed as Audrey
heads for the closet. |
AUDREY
So where are you taking her? |
AUDREY
So something somewhat nice? |
JAKE
Yea, I don't know what. |
AUDREY
(Pulling some
clothes out)
How about this? |
JAKE
I don't know. You pick, thats why
you're here. |
AUDREY
Come on, stand up. |
Jake sits up on the bed and stands up. Audrey puts the
clothes up against him. |
JAKE
Audrey tosses the clothes on the
bed and turns back to the closet
with another set. She holds it up
against him. |
Audrey starts digging through the closet. |
AUDREY
We really need to take you
shopping.
(She stops and
pulls out a nice
pair of pants and
a nice shirt from
the back of his

closet)
Why not this? |
JAKE
Wow, I haven't worn that in a long
time.
(noticing her look)
Oh no. I'm not wearing that. My
mom bought that for me years ago.
I've only wore it once... |
AUDREY
Do you want to look nice? |
AUDREY
No....no, it actually looks really
nice.
(Holds it up to
him)
Yes, this with your black shoes.
(Pauses, realizes
he isn't going to
move)
Alright.
(Handing him the
hangers and
pushes him to the
door)
Go get your shower |
Jake reluctantly leaves and closes the door. |
EXT. KELLY'S HOUSE - NIGHT |
Jake knocks on the door and Kelly answers. |
KELLY
Mels' not ready yet, come on in. |
58.
KELLY
I assume you know I'm not happy
about this? |
JAKE
And I suppose you know its none of
your business. |
KELLY
She isn't like other girls you
have dated. |
JAKE
I haven't dated anyone since high
school, so don't lecture me about
who I have dated. Its not like
your track record is any better. |
KELLY
Oh, don't even start that crap
with me I have been in....... |
JAKE
(cutting her off)
Then don't start with me. Just
leave it at this. |
Mellissa enters looking amazing. |
JAKE
(Just as nervous)
Hey,
(pause)
You look amazing |
MELLISSA
(her face lights
up)
Thanks, umm you ready to go? |
As they leave, Jake opens the door for her and closes it
behind her. |
59.
EXT. KELLY'S DRIVEWAY - NIGHT |
Mellissa exits first followed by Jake. Mellissa gets to the
passenger side door. |
JAKE
Let me get that for you. |
Jake opens the door for her and helps her into the car. He
walks to the drivers side and gets in also. |
INT. RESTAURANT - NIGHT |
Jake and Mellissa are seated and talking when Veronica walks

VERONICA WAITRESS

JAKE
Yea, yea, they ummm, worked it out

VERONICA WAITRESS
Good, good. So what can I get you

MELLISSA
Oh, I'll have the same thank you. |
JAKE
Unsweet tea? A northern thing? |
60.
MELLISSA
Yea, I guess its a northern thing. |
JAKE
How was acting school? |
MELLISSA
Oh, it was amazing. So many
talented people. |
JAKE
Oh I bet. So now you are done? |
MELLISSA
Yea, I'm supposed to have an
audition later on this week. |
JAKE
So soon? How did that happen? |
MELLISSA
Yea my agent set it up. |
JAKE
You have an agent already? |
MELLISSA
Yea, signed when I finished
school. Lucky for me they are
going to be down here casting.
Enough about me, hows your job
going? |
JAKE
Oh, its... well, its different.
Hard work but at least it pays the
bills. |
MELLISSA
Thats all that matters. Still
looking for a job with your
degree? |
VERONICA WAITRESS
(Approaching the
table)
Here you two go. You two ready to
order? |
61.
JAKE
Actually, I havent even looked at
the menu yet, could you give us a
few more mintues? |

Fade in on Veronica coming back to the table with the check.
Jake and Mellissa are laughing. |
VERONICA WAITRESS
Here you go. |
JAKE
(Putting the card
back in his
wallet)
Thank you, have a good night. |
VERONICA WAITRESS
You two. |
Jake and Mellissa get up and leave. Jake opens the door for

JAKE
So, what are you doing tomorrow

MELLISSA
Nothing yet, what did you have in
mind? |
JAKE
You want to come over and watch a
movie? |
62.
MELLISSA
Sure, what time? |
JAKE
I get off at 5, so 6? |
MELLISSA
(Smiling)
Okay.
(Pause)
Well, I should get going. |
JAKE
Okay, I'll see you tomorrow |
MELLISSA
(smiling)
Of course |
Jake extends his hand and they dance. After wards they
share a soft, gentle kiss. |
INT. WAREHOUSE - DAY |
Its the end of the day and Jake is moving some last minute
boxes around the warehouse as some music plays in the
background. Mr. McNeil enters. Jake realizes this and
quickly turns the music down. |
JAKE
(awkwardly smiling)
Yea |
MR. MCNEIL
Place looks good, hows it going? |
JAKE
(grabbing the
clipboard off a
box and handing
it to him.)
Good good, Ummm, one driver didn't
show up. I didn't know what to
do. |
63.
MR. MCNEIL
Actually, thats why I'm here. He
is running a little late. He wont
get here till 5:30 so we need you
to stick around. |
MR. MCNEIL
Is that a problem? |
JAKE
Umm, no no its okay. I just need
to rearrange some things. |
MR. MCNEIL
(tossing him the
keys)
Okay, well I'm heading home so can
you lock up when you are done? |
MR. MCNEIL
Okay, See you tomorrow Jake. |
Jake wait for Mr. McNeil to leave before pulling out his
cell phone. |
JAKE
(pulling out his
cell phone)
Mellissa, Mellissa Mellissa, No,
Kelly's house....
(puttingthe phone
to his ear)
Come on, answer....
(no answer)
Hey Mellissa, its Jake. Listen, I
am hung up at work so I was hoping
we could move the movie back to 7?
Give me a call back. Bye. |
Jake hangs up the phone and goes through his phone book
again. |
64.
JAKE
(putting the phone
to his ear)
Brian, hey its Jake. Listen,
Mellissa is coming over. Yes, the
hot one. Hey, I'm stuck at work
and I won't get home till at least
seven, could you guys keep her
company? Yes, I know you and
Rachael arent on good terms but
you are having dinner tonight
right? Good, so just apologize
for me, I'll get there as soon as
I can. Thanks man. Later. |
Jake lets out a sigh of anger and sits down on a box with
his hands over his face |
INT. CONDO LIVINGROOM - NIGHT |
Jake enters the condo just after seven. Mellissa is seated
at the table eating dinner with Justin, Brian, and Rachael. |
RACHAEL
Hey, how was work? |
JAKE
Slow. 4 trucks and one didn't
show till six.
(to Mellissa)
They corrupt you yet? |
MELLISSA
They've been great |
JUSTIN
(gathering
everyone's dishes)
I think the dishes can wait till
the morning, I'm beat. See you
guys later. Mellissa, it was nice
to meet you. |
MELLISSA
(smiling)
You too. |
65.
BRIAN
I'm taking off too, back to the
hotel... unless you've changed
your mind? |
He goes to kiss Rachael on the lips, she turns her face so
he hits her cheek instead. He then exits. |
RACHAEL
I'll see you guys later. Good
night. |
Mellissa sits on the couch as Jake turns on the tv and puts
in the DVD and sits on the couch. He presses play with the
remote. |
Fade back in on Jake and Mellissa on the couch with
Mellissa's head on Jakes shoulder.. |
MELLISSA
I should really get going.. |
JAKE
(smiling)
Okay, I'll walk you out. |
They walk out the front door. |
EXT. CONDO PARKINGLOT - NIGHT |
Jake and Mellissa are walking out to the car holding hands
and close to each other. He gets to her drivers side door.
She leans her back against the door with Jakes arms around
her. |
JAKE
Your audition is tomorrow? |
66.
MELLISSA
(smiling)
I will be. You should stop by
after work. |
They share a light kiss. Jake opens the door and helps her
into the car. She drives off. Jake breathes a sigh of
relief and starts to walk back inside when his cell phone
rings. He answers |
Intercut phone sequence |
JAKE
It went well, she litterally just
left. |
Jake walks back into the condo. |
INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT |
Jake enters from outside on the phone with Audrey. |
AUDREY
You going to see her again
tomorrow? |
JAKE
Yea, I'm going to stop by after
work.
(Pause)
Hey, what are you doing tomorrow
night? |
AUDREY
Actually, I already have plans
tomorrow night. |
67.
AUDREY
Yea, kind of a date thing. |
JAKE
Audrey, YOU have a date? |
AUDREY
(Using obvious
sarcasm)
Yea....you don't have to act so
surprised |
JAKE
Well, whats his name? |
JAKE
The mysterious man from your
purse... how sweet. |
AUDREY
No need to tease. Its not
flattering |
JAKE
Where did you meet him? |
AUDREY
At a coffee house just outside
town. |
AUDREY
He's sweet, cute, umm hold on.
(pause)
He's calling me right now, I'll
call you tomorrow when we get
back. |
Jake hangs up and walks back into his room. He leans on the
closed door to his room and he runs his hands through his
hair smiling before finally turning and walking into his
room. |
68.
INT. WORK/WAREHOUSE - DAY |
Jake enters the warehouse and sees very little boxes lying
around. He tosses his stuff down on a stack of boxes. |
JAKE
At least its going to be a slow
day. |
Jake reorganizes some of the boxes. After he is done, he
walks to the door. |
JAKE
(Shouting)
Mr. McNeil, I'm here. |
Jake walks back over and grabs his stuff. He moves it over
to the side when Mr McNeil enters. |
MR. MCNEIL
Hey Jake, hows it going? |
JAKE
Its going pretty good, how are
you? |
MR. MCNEIL
I'm doing okay, but we need to
talk. |
JAKE
Okay, whats going on? |
MR. MCNEIL
I had meeting with my supervisor
earlier this morning and he cut
back my payroll and you've been
here the least amount of time so
I'm sorry but we are going to have
to let you go. |
JAKE
But who is going to run the
warehouse? |
MR. MCNEIL
Tom from invoicing is moving in
here. They actually cut his job
but you are the new guy. Its the
only way he can keep his job. |
69.
JAKE
(obviously
disappointed)
Okay. |
MR. MCNEIL
I'm sorry, I really wish there was
a way we could keep you on. |
JAKE
Its okay, ummm thanks for the
opportunity though. |
MR. MCNEIL
If you need a reference, just give
them my number.
(shakes his hand)
Take care of yourself. |
Jake turns around and grabs his stuff and leaves as we see
Mr. McNeil turn and walk back into his office area. |
EXT. KELLY'S FRONT DOOR - DAY |
Jake knocks on the front door. Mellissa answers while she
is getting ready. |
MELLISSA
Hey, my audition got moved up.
I've got to leave in a few
minutes.
(pause)
Whats wrong? |
MELLISSA
(Out of breath)
Oh I'm sorry. Come in, come in. |
Jake enters
INT. KELLY'S LIVING ROOM - DAY |
MELLISSA
(running back to
grab her make up)
What happened? |
70.
JAKE
They had their budget cut back. |
MELLISSA
(looking into her
compact)
God, I'm sorry but there are other
jobs out there. |
JAKE
Yea I know. You need a hand? |
MELLISSA
No, I think I can handle it. Be
right back. |
Mellissa runs back into the bathroom and shuts the door. |
MELLISSA
(from the bathroom)
Hey, can you check my phone, see
if I missed any calls? |
JAKE
Yea, where's your phone? |
Jake walks over and picks up the phone. |
JAKE
You have a text message. Want me
to read it? |
JAKE
(hitting a button)
Yea
(pause, slightly
distraught)
Who is Tony? |
MELLISSA
(Bathroom door
swings open, she
is just standing
there for a
second before
running over)
No no, put the phone down Jake... |
71.
JAKE
(looking deep into
her eyes)
Who is Tony? |
MELLISSA
He's just a guy I knew in New York |
JAKE
Are you involved with him? |
MELLISSA
We were for a little bit... |
JAKE
Are you still involved?
(long pause. More
determined)
Are you two still involved? |
MELLISSA
Yea... but its not what you think. |
JAKE
Great. Just great... |
MELLISSA
You don't understand Jake, it
wasn't a healthy relationship. |
JAKE
Then you should have ended it. |
MELLISSA
I tried, will you just let me
explain... |
JAKE
(cutting her off)
I I I don't want to hear an
explanation. Listen, I just have
to go... |
MELLISSA
Will you just listen please? |
JAKE
I don't want to hear excuses....I
just need to go. I'll call you
later. |
Jake walks out the front door as Mellissa sits down on the
couch and presses her hand to her face covering her eyes. |
72.
EXT. WOODED PARK - DAY |
As we open, Jake is laying on the hood of his car. He gets
up and goes over and lays in the grass with his journal and
his camera. He looks up at the clouds and snaps pictures.
He reaches into his pocket and calls Audrey. |
JAKE
Hey, Its me.
(pause)
Are you busy?
(pause)
Can you meet me at the park?
(pause)
Yea, the usual spot...
(pause)
Okay, bye... |
EXT. WOODED PARK - DAY |
Audrey walks up and lays down in the grass next to Jake. |
AUDREY
I talked to my uncle...I'm really
sorry... |
JAKE
Its okay, I understood that. |
AUDREY
So what don't you understand? |
JAKE
I don't understand how Mellissa
couldn't tell me she had a
boyfriend. |
AUDREY
(Shocked, leaning
up)
What? |
AUDREY
How'd you find out? |
JAKE
I read a text message in her cell
phone. |
73.
AUDREY
You were snooping? |
JAKE
No no, would I snoop? |
AUDREY
I didn't think you would.... |
JAKE
No, she asked me to check her
messages and I read her text
messages and she had one from some
guy in New York named Tony. |
AUDREY
Oh God, I'm sorry..... Did she
explain what was going on? |
JAKE
There wasn't much to explain is
there? Some guy on the phone
telling her that he missed her and
couldn't wait to see her again...
and I won't be the other guy in a
relationship. |
AUDREY
You didn't let her explain? That
doesn't sound fair Jake... not to
her. |
JAKE
Life isn't fair but I won't be the
other guy that breaks up a
relationship... even if its a bad
relationship. I just thought for
once in my life I could have a
normal relationship. |
AUDREY
There's no such thing as a normal
relationship. |
JAKE
You're telling me this while you
have a date tonight? |
AUDREY
Yea
(pause)
A little unbelievable huh? |
74.
AUDREY
(laying her head
on his chest)
That we both have dates in the
same week. |
Jake just smiles |
AUDREY
So, have you talked to Jen lately? |
JAKE
Not in a couple of days, no |
They both lay back down |
The scene turns to dusk and they are in the same possition.
Audrey leans up |
AUDREY
I've gotta go.... Call me later
if you get a chance. |
JAKE
(smiling slightly)
Okay, have a good date. |
Audrey leaves as Jake sits up and looks straight ahaid for a
few moments. He then gets up and leaves. |
INT. CONDO LIVINGROOM - NIGHT |
Jake enters to find Brian sitting on the couch slumped over
forward with his hands over his face. He looks up to see
its Jake and goes back to the same possition. |
75.
JAKE
(putting his stuff
on the table)
Whats wrong? |
BRIAN
Rachael just called. She, she's
not sure she wants to stay
together. |
JAKE
What? You guys have been together
for years, you're going to let
this come between you? |
BRIAN
I don't want to. I stood Katie
up. I just want things to go back
to how they were. |
BRIAN
I tried man. Could you talk to
her for me? |
JAKE
I can't, she's already pissed at
me.
(pause)
Seriously, you need to take care
of this. Don't take no for an
answer. |
BRIAN
I know, but what am I going to
say? Its not like you and
Mellissa, we aren't starting a new
relationship. Its
just...comfortable. |
JAKE
Yea, Mellissa and I aren't going
to make it. |
BRIAN
Oh geez man, What happened now. |
76.
JAKE
Don't worry about it. Listen,
Rachael is probably at Erin's
house. Go over there and tell her
how you feel |
BRIAN
Yea but what about... |
JAKE
(cutting him off)
Just go! |
BRIAN
Yea but what if she doesn't want
to see me? |
JAKE
(mocking him)
But what if she doesn't......grow
a pair man. Get off your high
horse and go see her... unless you
want to let her go you will go see
her and you won't take no for an
answer. |
BRIAN
(getting up and
walking out the
front door)
Alright, alright, I'm going geez |
Jake lays down on the couch and kicks his shoes off and
falls asleep. |

Hey, whats up? |
JAKE
Nothing, looking for a job. Oh,

(Opens up his
night stand
drawer and pulls
out the rent
check)
Here. |
JAKE
Wow, then entire amount too.
Thanks.
(pause)
Where did you get the money? |
JAKE
Don't worry about it. |
JUSTIN
Im serious, where did you get it? |
JAKE
I said don't worry about it |
JUSTIN
Okay.
(Tossing him his
cell phone)
Oh Brian called to thank you. Umm,
I'm sorry to hear about Mellissa. |
JAKE
Its okay, It just wasn't right. |

you later. Bye |
JAKE
(Jake breathes
deep and sits
down on the bed.)
Well this seems all too familiar |

Audrey opens the door to find Jake standing there with a

79.
JAKE

AUDREY
(Her eyes open
wide)
Really? Oh thats so great!

JAKE
I never applied for a job with
them... |
JAKE
Possitive. They said they had
read an article I wrote in
college. |
AUDREY

81.
BRIAN
So how did this happen? |
JAKE
They called me this morning and
said they had an unexpected
opening that they needed to fill.
So I went in and had an amazing
interview. Somehow they had
gotten a copy of an article I
wrote about my college baseball
team. They loved it and offered
me a job. |
JUSTIN
Well, I'm proud of you man...
Congrats. |
JAKE
(Looking around to
notice Audrey
walked out the
front door.)
Thanks, I'll be right back. |
Jake gets up and leaves and is followed close behind by
Brian. |
BRIAN
Hey man listen I just wanted to
say thank you for helping me. |
JAKE
Oh no problem man, you two going
to be okay? |
BRIAN
Yea I think so... she told me I
could come home so thats good but

Ahh, oh God you scared me. |

SAMANTHA
Its nice to finally meet you |
JAKE
(shaking her hand)
Nice to meet you too. So how long
has this been going on? |
AUDREY
(holding
Samantha's hand)
Ummm 3 months? |
JAKE
(smiling)
I'm happy for you two. |
BRIAN
I bet you are! This is awesome. |
AUDREY
Could you not tell me parents? I
haven't told them yet |
83.
AUDREY
(Smiling)
Thanks... shouldn't we join the
others? |
The four of them walk in, Brian deliberately walks in behind
Samantha and Audrey looking at them from behind and
grinning. |
INT. JAKE'S ROOM - DAY |
Jake is sleeping in his bed when Justin comes in and sits
down on the bed. Jake wakes up. |
JUSTIN
Hey, whats going on? |
JAKE
Geez, nothing. Whats up? |
JUSTIN
When do you start? |
JAKE
Monday, why are you here this
early? |
JUSTIN
I wanted to stop by before I had
to leave for work. You gave me
your graduation money for rent? |
JAKE
I said don't worry about it. |
JUSTIN
(taking out the
check)
I'm not
(he tears up the
check)
Just pay me when you can. |
JAKE
Your bonus came through didn't it |
84.
Jake falls back onto the pillow |
JUSTIN
Mellissa is waiting outside for
you. |
JAKE
(exhaling a deep
breath)
What? What did she get here? |
JUSTIN
Couple minutes ago. I told her
you had to get done and invited
her in but she said she would
rather wait out there. |
Jake grabs his shirt and jeans off the nightstand and puts
them on before exiting. |
INT. BATHROOM - DAY |
Jake runs into the bathroom as he zips up his fly. He turns
on the sink and brushes his teeth while combing his hair. He
splashes water on his face and wipes it on a towel before
leaving. |
EXT. OUTSIDE THE CONDO - DAY |
Jake exits as we see that it is Jen waiting for him, not
Mellissa. He approaches her. |
JAKE
Listen... I'm sorry about the
other day, you were trying to
explain and I was just too focused
on being who I thought I should be
instead of focusing on who I
should be for you... it was
inconsiderate and I'd love to
start again. |
85.
MELLISSA
We don't need to start again...
listen, before I left for New York
I was confident in who I was and
how I was raised... but I was 16
and I made some stupid choices
when i got up there... Tony being
the biggest. I was a real mess
for a long time but when I got
back here I thought it was my
chance to start over... I know I
should have told you about all of
this but telling a guy about drugs
and alcohol isn't something I
wanted to bring up... I liked the
way you looked at me and I didn't
want to lose that. |
JAKE
(slightly
unaffected)
And what about Tony? |
MELLISSA
I told Tony a year ago that I
needed to change myself and that
to do that I needed to get away
from him and he respected that...
but he still pops up from time to
time and you getting that text
message was just a bad
coincidence... Jake you're a great
guy... thats what Kelly says at
least and I agree and I don't want
what I did 3 or 4 years ago to run
any chances I have now...
professionally or personally. I've
been trying so hard to find out
who I am for the past year and I
have a grasp on that now... and I
hope that this doesn't mean we are
over... because I like you and I'm
really excited to see where we can
go... |

JAKE
I spent all of my time since
college thinking I was mature...
that I was this well balanced guy
who had it all together... but I
realized that I was really just
full of myself. I would really
love to give us a real shot... |

First things first...A couple of times I think the names may have been wrong. In one scene Jen was talking when she wasn't even supposed to be there, and such stuff. It was pretty good. There wasn't a terrible lot of drama, and some scenes with Jen could be embelished upon before the end. The thing I was thinking is what kind of movie could this be if turned into a comedy. The situations of this man struggling to enter the real world could have huge comic potential, both physical and verbal. Especially the relationships with all the girls. The one thing I did not like, was the boss, secretary scene. It's the 21st century, and that woman would file a sex suit so fast Jake wouldn't be able to witness any of it. Maybe make it more subtle, or remarks the boss would say when she isn't around because I can appreciate how it further developes his rare respect for women. I have a short attention span and it's hard to read long scripts, but yours was the first I was able to keep my attention through. (I ramble, sorry) The end. |
