Bent Rim
by rob (rjsutten@adelphia.net)

Rated: PG-13   Genre: Drama   User Review: ****
Two high school boys from different backgrounds have their paths cross during a high school basketball season. The boys share a common thread of losing their fathers while in high school. During the season the boys develop a friendship while taking the team to the state championships. It is not quite done, only a few pages in to the second act. Please let me know how it sounds.

                       COACH BAKER
Everyone, over here! Take a seat!

Everyone runs and sits in front of Coach Baker. Coach Baker
holds a book.

                       COACH BAKER
The dogmas of the quiet past are
inadequate to the stormy present.
The occasion is piled high with
difficulty, and we must rise with
the occasion. As our case is new,
so we must think anew and act
anew. Abraham Lincoln

                       SCAB
      (whispers to Ted)
What's dogma?

                       COACH BAKER
The past can't be changed. Now
stormy might be a strong word, but
we have some dramtic changes going
on. The occasion is piled high
with difficulty we must rise with
the occasion. As our case is new,
new players new team, so we must
think anew and act anew. So,
what's that mean boys?

                       CHRIS
      (whispers to
       Marshall)
He wants us to answer?

                       COACH BAKER
Marshall?

37.

                       MARSHALL
Me, uhhh

                       COACH BAKER
What do you think?

                       MARSHALL
I don't think Lincoln had
basketball in mind when he said
that.

                       COACH BAKER
True, there were more pressing
issues.

                       MARSHALL
Stormy present is a little
extreme. Perhaps its more like
slightly cloudy.

                       COACH BAKER
Slighty cloudly, hmm. Ok. Anyone
else?

Davis raises his hand.

                       MARSHALL
How often does he do that?

                       TED
Usally once every few weeks.

                       SCAB
He'll be doing it more now that
the season is staring.

INT. CHRIS' HOUSE - NIGHT

Chris comes down stairs with only towel on.

39.

                       CHRIS
I think we did great tonight mom!
We'll definitely win league! Hey
mom did you do laundry?

Chris walks in to the dining area Michelle is on the phone
as Hannah does homework at the table.

                       MICHELLE
He just came downstairs.

                       CHRIS
Who is it?

                       MICHELLE
Coach Greeer.

Chris takes the phone.

                       CHRIS
Hey coach, how's it going?

                       COACH GREER
Good game tonight.

                       CHRIS
Thanks. How'd you?

                       COACH GREER
I got my sources. So, you ready to
come back to St. Francis?

                       CHRIS
What?

Chris is shocked and raises his other hand as his towel
drops.

                       HANNAH
Mom! Chris's pee pee!

                       MICHELLE
Chris!

                       HANNAH (VO)
It's all hairy, ewww!

Chris pulls up his towel and goes in to the living room.

                       COACH GREER
Everything ok?

40.

                       CHRIS
I'm good I'm good!

                       COACH GREER
So it's just a matter of some
paper work and your back at St.
Marthas.

                       CHRIS
What about the driving? That's
four hours a day on the road.

Chris's mom walks in to the room.

                       MICHELLE
Honey, you'll be staying at Coach
Greer's house.

                       CHRIS
What I'm not leaving you.

                       MICHELLE
Chris. The Greers are paying for
your tuition. You're not going to
be with strangers.

                       COACH GREER
Chris, It would only be a short
time. After the season, you could
come home every weekend.

                       CHRIS
What about my father? I thought
he was the reason I couldn't get
transferred?

Chris stops talking and turns to his mom.

                       CHRIS
Mom, can I?

                       MICHELLE
Sure.

Michelle walk out of the room.

                       CHRIS
      (softly)
So what about my dad?

                       COACH GREER
Chris, I'd do anything for you,
but no matter what it is in life:
education, work, friendships, high

school basketball. Politics are
involved. I do this for you, you
do this for me. You did this to
me and I do this to you. It's
just not simple. People hold on to
things and take it out on others
that don't deserve it. I've been
around and I know the game of
basketball very well, but I will
never understand politics. You do
what is right, not what makes you
feel better. Anyways, occasionally
I have to dab in to politics to
get what is right.

                       CHRIS
Just paper work to sign?

                       COACH GREER
Yes, and the sooner the better.

                       CHRIS
Tomorrow?

                       COACH GREER
We can do it this weekend.

                       CHRIS
No, I'll drive out right after
school.

                       COACH GREER
That's my Chris.

EXT. HOME GYM - DAY

Chris walks out of gym not dressed for practice. Marshall
walks towards gym. Chris tries to walk the opposite
directions.

                       MARSHALL
Chris, hey! Where you going?

                       CHRIS
I have some personal things, gotta
miss practice.

                       MARSHALL
So it's true? Erick was right? Mr.
Definetely. I'm dedicated to
this team.

42.

                       CHRIS
Erick?

                       MARSHALL
You're transferring back to St.
Martha's?

                       CHRIS
It's not definite.

                       MARSHALL
But you want to transfer?

                       CHRIS
I'm sorry, I feel bad enough as it
is.

                       MARSHALL
You feel bad? What about every
one on our team?

                       CHRIS
I should have never even been here
in the first place.

                       MARSHALL
But you are. You got this school
believing, this team believing.
Hec you got me to believe.

                       CHRIS
I'm sorry. I thought I couldn't
transfer back to St. Marthas. I
truly believed I was going to play
here, but Coach Greer helped me
transfer.

                       MARSHALL
Have you read the sports page
lately?

                       CHRIS
What?

                       MARSHALL
Do you know who Tom Misso is?

                       CHRIS
Sure, I played with him at St.
Marthas.

43.

                       MARSHALL
Top scorer, out all season. Torn
ACL.

                       CHRIS
So? You know what? Don't play that
card with Coach Greer. I owe it to
Coach Greer to go there. He has
been like a second father to me.

                       MARSHALL
Did he tell you that?

                       CHRIS
What?

                       MARSHALL
Coach Greer, did he tell you you
were like a son to him?

                       CHRIS
Yeah me and a lot of his players.

                       MARSHALL
I meant personally, you know
alone?

                       CHRIS
I gotta go.

Chris walks away and Marshall grabs his arm.

                       MARSHALL
He told me that too! In my house
while my father was dying in the
other room.

                       CHRIS
What are you talking about?

                       MARSHALL
My dad got cancer after my
freshman year. My father got real
sick before school started. I
needed to be at home more. Coach
was cool at first, you know, "take
off as much time as you need" he
said. He would even come and
visit. When I told him I couldn't
play that year, he wasn't so cool.

                       CHRIS
Bull!

44.

                       MARSHALL
The only BS was his little speech
he gave me. He told me it was
about politics and doing what is
right. But that is not what I
remember the most. What I do
remember, is him telling me that I
needed to move on. He talked some
more, but I stopped listening.
Move on!

                       CHRIS
Move on?

                       MARSHALL
We are talking about my father! A
man that was everyhting to me. All
those memories, so positive in my
life. From teaching me to ride a
bike to reading me stories at
night. He would work 12 hour
shifts and still find time to play
basketball or help me with school.

                       CHRIS
I get it Marshall, I just

                       MARSHALL
All those memories, positive and
negative that I experienced with
him, my mother and my sister. He
taught me about being a man, that
real men let their actions speak
for them. Things like integrity,
charater, honesty, personal
resposibilty. My father, this
great man, was dying and I
couldn't do anything and Coach
Greer wanted me to move on. So I
could play basketball. Throw a
stupid ball through a stupid hole.
I hated Coach Greer and anything
to do with high school basketball.

                       CHRIS
I'm sorry. I just. I don't know.
God! I can't believe this!

                       MARSHALL
Ask him about me, what I told you.
See what he says.

INT. COACH GREER'S HOUSE - NIGHT

IMMACULATE HOME, ITALIAN TILED FLOORS, DESIGNED SPIRAL STAIR
CASE, CRYSTAL CHADELEIR, HIGH END FURNITURE. Chris and
Coach Greer sit at a table doing paperwork. LISA GREER, 54
picks up empty plates and cups.

                       LISA
You boys want anything else?

                       CHRIS
No thank you Mrs. Greer.

                       COACH GREER
Im fine.

                       LISA
I'm glad you're coming back Chris
the team misses you.

                       COACH GREER
Yeah we do, ever since Misso got
injured. Wow, its been tough

                       CHRIS
Thanks.

                       LISA
I have some errands to run so I'll
see you later.

                       COACH GREER
Allright.

                       LISA
Have safe drive back Chris. Sorry
Amber is off visiting colleges
right now but you'll see her soon.

Lisa exits as Chris an Coach Greer continue with paperwork.

                       COACH GREER
Almost done, just some signatures.

                       CHRIS
So Misso is out all season?

                       COACH GREER
Torn ACL, he barely jumped and
just landed wrong.

46.

Chris looks on the wall. PLAQUES AND AWARDS COVER WALLS OF
OFFICE. COACH OF THE YEAR "DAVID GREER", CITIZEN OF THE
YEAR, HUMANITARIAN AWARDS. Chris puts down the pen.

                       CHRIS
Do you remember Marshall Limbrick?

                       COACH GREER
Of course I do, he plays at George
Washingon now.

                       CHRIS
He played for you too.

                       COACH GREER
Freshman year.

                       CHRIS
Yeah.

                       COACH GREER
I remember that, he was a good
player, started on my junior
varsity team that year. I
remember that game when you two
went at it. You know, it was at
that game that I knew you needed
to go to St. Marthas.

                       CHRIS
Why did Marshall leave?

                       COACH GREER
Is this why you drove all the way
here? To find out why some kid
quit or to get back to St.
Martha's

                       CHRIS
His name is Marshall, and his dad
had cancer.

                       COACH GREER
I remember his dad having cancer.
Came real quick. He took some time
off at school to help out at home.
I tried to keep contact with him,
but I think his father died, and
he must of moved after that. I
haven't heard about him until
recently.

47.

                       CHRIS
He said you gave him an
ultimatium.

                       COACH GREER
A ultimatum?

                       CHRIS
Yeah, either play basketball or
he loses his scholarship.

                       COACH GREER
I never gave him that ultimatum. I
would have never taken his
scholarship. I think the death of
his father was too much and he
left. He is obviously still upset.

                       CHRIS
He didn't have a scholarship.

                       COACH GREER
Well, I thought he did.

                       CHRIS
Both of his parents are educated,
they made good money. They paid
for his tuition. It wasn't until
his father got sick, that he asked
for help.

                       COACH GREER
I thought he got help from
boosters. I mean there are so many
players. You forget sometimes.

                       CHRIS
How do you forget a freshman that
starts on your junior varsity
squad and is your leading scorer.
He was playing varsity by mid
season!

                       COACH GREER
What are you getting at Chris and
why do you care?

                       CHRIS
How do you forget him? A player
like Marshall you want on your
team, a player like Marshall you
need on your team. You don't
forget a player like Marshall.

48.

                       COACH GREER
What do you want me to say Chris?
Yeah he was awesome! One of the
best players I had ever seen play
basketball! It's sad what happened
to his dad. I wished he didn't
leave our school!

                       CHRIS
Did you give him an ultimatum?

                       COACH GREER
Ultimatum? Why do you care Chris?
When you come back to St. Martha's
you are going to get what you
want. Best education in the
state, college recruiters gallore.
You gonna get that at GW?

                       CHRIS
His dad was dying from cancer.

                       COACH GREER
I'm sorry what happen with
Marshall, but St. Marthas expects
the best. The best education, the
best students, the best
facilities, the best teachers, and
the best basketball team. I
provide that for them, the
students, the parents, the
boosters, the alumni, the
community. I do that, and if
somone, regardless of their
circumstances, cannot give their
best. I have to make decisions,
no matter how harsh they seem.
That's how life is Chris. It's
kind of like.

                       CHRIS
Oh shut up already, you over
inflated gas bag! God! All I have
to say is you better hope Tom
Misso's knee heals soon Dave,
because I would hate to not have
him when we play each other.

Chris gets out of seat and leaves room. Walks to front
door.

49.

                       COACH GREER (V.O.)
Chris you are making a big
mistake! I know you Chris, you
strive to be the best. You're not
going to get that at GW.

Chris opens front door and slams it behind him.

INT. GW BASKETBALL GYM - DAY

Chris dressed in GW uniform walks by Erick, Hector, and
David.

                       ERICK
Hey, ASS is back.

David and Hector laugh. Chris ignores and walks towards
Coach Baker. They talk to one another. Coach Baker pats
Chris on his back.

                       COACH BAKER
Chris.

                       CHRIS
I uhh have to apologize. I
thought I couldn't transfer to St.
Marthas, so I wanted to play here.
When my transfer came through, I
thought I wanted to play at St.
Marthas, but I was wrong.

                       COACH BAKER
You only missed one day of
practice and you never officially
left our school. Don't worry about
it. Ok?

                       CHRIS
Ok.

Coach stands in front of players.

                       COACH BAKER
We need to go over option one
again.

Erick raises his hand and Coach Baker nods to him.

                       COACH BAKER
Yes Erick.

50.

                       ERICK
Coach. Option one really? What
about the elephant in the gym?

                       SCAB
Elephant in the gym? Is that a
fat joke?

                       ERICK
It's a saying idiot!

                       TED
It means not talking about
something that is right in front
of you, like

                       ERICK
Elephant in our frigin gym!

                       SCAB
Chris isn't fat.

                       ERICK
Just shut up Scab!

Erick stands up.

                       ERICK
We all thought he quit and for him
to just come back because he
changed his mind. I mean if it
was any other player he'd be
kicked off the team. I think its
only fair that he have you know
consequences.

                       TED
Consequences, seriously. It was
one practice.

                       ERICK
You were talking crap on him
yesterday Ted.

                       COACH BAKER
Boys! Boys!

                       TED
I wasn't talking crap. I just
said it wasn't cool that

Marshall stands up.

51.

                       MARSHALL
Erick is right, it's only fair.

                       COACH BAKER
Enough!

                       ERICK
Stadiums!

                       DAVIS
Yeah stadiums!

                       COACH BAKER
No that's too easy. Yard work.

                       ERICK
Yeah Yard Work!

                       WHOLE TEAM
Yard work! Yard Work! Yard Work!

Chris looks at Marshall, Marshall shrugs.

                       COACH BAKER
I'll see you this weekend.

INT. LIMBRICK HOME - NIGHT

Marshall walk in to kitchen, puts back pack on chair and
gives mom a kiss as she cooks dinner.

                       MARSHALL
Hi mom.

Marshall stirs sauce, licks spoon. Marilyn smacks his hand.

                       MARSHALL
I should go out with Cheyenne just
because you heard she puts out. I
should go ahead and add to this
reputation that she is easy. Just
so I can have 15 minutes, or in
your case 15 seconds, of fun.
Don't mind my reputation as a
person, because I am a man and
will be considered a stud. Her, a
slut. Better hope she's on the
pill though, cause heaven forbids
she gets pregnant. I can wear a
condom but those feel funny and
are only 95% effective. I would
hate to be that 5%. Oh and don't
forget sexually transmitted
diseases. I'd hate to get one and
pass it along to one of the"easy
girls" you'll set me up with
regularly. Since you know me so
well and know my taste of women.
Even though I was given a high
sense of respect and dignity for
all people, espically women, which
has been ingrained in to my head
by my mother and sister since
birth. Yeah Erick, relay that
message to Cheyenne.

                       ERICK
You're gay then?

                       DANIEL
You're the one that told me his

                       CHRIS
I don't want to talk about it.

                       MARSHALL
That's cool. How's your hand?

                       CHRIS
It's a little sore, but I'll be
fine.

                       MARSHALL
Cause that guy sure hit your hand
pretty hard with his nose.

                       CHRIS
      (chuckles)
Ha! Ha! Yeah,I would of liked him
to hit my hand a few more times.

97.

                       MARSHALL
      (chuckles)
Ha! Ha! I think my ride home left
me.

                       CHRIS
No problem.

Chris starts his truck and backs up.

EXT. MARSHALL'S HOUSE - NIGHT

Chris's truck pulls up in front of Marshall's house.
Marshall exits truck.

                       MARSHALL

Marshall walks up pathway, Chris gets out of truck.

                       CHRIS
My father wasn't an alcoholic.

Marshall turns around.

                       CHRIS
He hardly ever drank. I never saw
him drunk, ever.

                       MARSHALL
I believe you Chris.

                       CHRIS
I just don't want you to think,
you know. He was some sort of
lush, he deserved it.

Marshall walks up to Chris's truck.

                       MARSHALL
I would never think that.

                       CHRIS
Thanks.

                       MARSHALL
You hungry? We didn't really get
pizza.

98.

INT. MARSHALL"S KITCHEN - NIGHT

Marshall makes sandwiches, while Chris sits at kitchen
table.

                       MARSHALL
You want mustard? Mayonaise?

                       CHRIS
Sure.

Marshall sits down, hands Chris his sandwich.

                       CHRIS
My dad never drank much.

                       MARSHALL
Yeah.

                       CHRIS
Just, I think he felt obliged to
go out with the boss. Him being a
booster and all. Unfortunately Mr.
Booster Boss got injured in the
accident that killed my dad.

                       MARSHALL
That's why your transfer wasn't
approved at first.

                       CHRIS
Mr. Booster didn't want me there.

                       MARSHALL
Coach must of changed Mr.
Booster's mind when their best
player went down?

                       CHRIS
Coach changes a lot of minds at
St. Francis.

                       MARSHALL
Are you justifying what your dad
did?

                       CHRIS
No, never. He screwed up! But
never say no to the boss who's
paying for your kid's education.

                       MARSHALL
He paid for all of it?

99.

                       CHRIS
My dad was a matinence mechanic
for 15 years, suddenly he's
offered a job making two times
more than he's making. We're
moving in to beautiful home and
I'm going to St. Francis; one of
the best schools in the state. So,
in one way or another he was
paying for all of it!

                       MARSHALL
Did you know?

                       CHRIS
Of course, my dad told me
everything. That's one thing
about my dad, no secrets.

                       MARSHALL
Not like you could keep that a
secret.

                       CHRIS
No doubt, hey son I'm making a
hundred fifty thousand a year now,
oh and by the way were moving in
to a 4000 square foot house in
Beverly Center.

                       MARSHALL
Didn't you question it?

                       CHRIS
My mom did, but hell, look what we
got. It was perfect! Perfectly
screwed! My father's dead.

                       MARSHALL
You couldn't have known man. He
did what was best for his family.

                       CHRIS
Drinking and driving wasn't good
for my family.

                       MARSHALL
Is that how remember your father?
You said he wasn't a drunk. Was
he?

                       CHRIS
No! Not at all.

100.

                       MARSHALL
So then what?

                       CHRIS
Then what what?

                       MARSHALL
Is your dad an idiot that screwed
up all the time and was an
complete asshole or was he a great
man, who did an amazing job
raising some great kids, who made
a horrible mistake and that is the
only thing he should be measured
by?

                       CHRIS
No, but it's not that easy. I
can't just forget what he did.
It's not like it was someone
else's fault.

                       MARSHALL
Then if it was someone else's
fault it be ok. He'd still be
dead.

                       CHRIS
Yeah, but our insurance wouldn't
of cancelled us and we still
beliving in our house and I'd be
going to St. Francis and I
wouldn't be going through all this
shit!

                       MARSHALL
So, it's not about your dad dying,
but about how his death didn't pay
off on the life insurance policy?

                       CHRIS
Screw you!

Chris walks out of kitchen.

                       MARSHALL
Chris, I'm sorry! That wasn't
cool.

                       CHRIS
I can't get past it.

Chris and Marshall sit back in kitchen.

101.

                       CHRIS
All this scrap! It can't be
happening and I can't feel cause
I'm just so.

                       MARSHALL
Angry. Eventually you have to
forgive.

                       CHRIS
I know.

                       MARSHALL
Ever think all this "crap"
happening to you, me

                       CHRIS
What destiny?

                       MARSHALL
What are the odds? Your father
dying, mine dying, us meeting at
GW.

                       CHRIS
If it is, whoever made this plan
is an asshole.

INT. MARSHALL'S & CHRIS BOOSTER BS - NIGHT

                       MARSHALL
You get this "deal" after your
freshman year?

                       CHRIS
Right after that game we fought. I
got a phone call from Coach Greer.

                       MARSHALL
Mr. booster gave your dad his job?
Pay your tuition?

                       CHRIS
Pretty much.

                       MARSHALL
Offered us the same thing. They
were recruiting me when I was in
7th grade.

                       CHRIS
Seriously?

102.

                       MARSHALL
7th grade. My dad refused, he
insisted in paying my way.

                       CHRIS
Good for him.

                       MARSHALL
Integrity. It was huge to my dad.

                       CHRIS
Integrity.

                       MARSHALL
He said "You can do things the
wrong way and gain everything but
lose inside or you can do things
the right way and lose everything,
but if you win inside you never
lose."

                       CHRIS
My dad was flawed.

                       MARSHALL

Great Dialogue! I enjoyed it throughly! The conflict is believeable and so are the characters. Be careful on the Caps, too many at the beginning, otherwise it was awesome. Good luck in finishing!
