WAGER

EXT. WILL'S CAR - DAY

The camera is in the car - an eighties style Chevrolet -
with Will and Alex, driving through the busy main streets of
LA. Both look fairly happy, Alex is positively excited. It
is a bright, sunny day and there is some fairly quiet funk
music playing through the car stereo.

                       ALEX
      (Spinning a
       handgun on his
       fingers)
Hell yeah, I love this job!

                       WILL
      (Grinning)
Donít get too excited, you might
end up being disappointed.

                       ALEX
      (Obviously playing)
Oh, I donít know about that, itís
gonna be crazy out there!

                       WILL
      (Rolls his eyes)
Youíre gonna sleep tonight.

                       ALEX
      (Flashes a
       childish smile)
Seriously though, this is the best
part of the job.

                       WILL
What, so you didnít like all the
shit leading up to this?

                       ALEX
      (Grunts in dissent)
Like what?

                       WILL
The suspense of snooping around or
going undercover, the thrill of
finding out something critical,
and most importantly, the absence
of any immediate danger.

2.

                       ALEX
Come on, you love the danger.

                       WILL
I donít!

                       ALEX
You love it! I remember seeing the
look in your eyes when you were
beating up that dealer who tried
to shoot you when we got him
talking and showed him my badge.

                       WILL
I was just glad I was putting a
dangerous criminal behind bars.

                       ALEX
Please, you and me both know
locking them up is the most
fucking boring part of the job,
when you know itís over.

                       WILL
No, itís true!

                       ALEX
My ass itís true! You broke his
jaw in the first punch!

                       WILL
      (Tries to keep a
       straight face for
       a second, but
       loses it)
Yeah, I did go a bit nuts there.

                       ALEX
A bit nuts? I have never seen so
many fucking teeth in the air.

FLASHBACK: IN A RESTAURANT

Will an Alex are at a table with the dealer when Alex takes
his badge out, prompting the dealer to whip his gun out, but
not quick enough, as Will has knocked him backwards and is
beating him senseless. Alex looks away from the situation,
embarrassedly pretending it has nothing to do with him.

RETURN TO CAR

                       WILL
It was just a reactionÖ

3.

                       ALEX
Some fucking reaction, I was too
scared to go anywhere near my
pockets for a month.

                       WILL
Iím surprised youíre ever afraid
of anything.

                       ALEX
Oh, I get afraid sometimes.

                       WILL
Really?

                       ALEX
Yeah.

                       WILL
I donít believe you.

                       ALEX
Itís true.

                       WILL
Get out of here.

                       ALEX
IÖ I wonít.

                       WILL
Ok then, one example.

                       ALEX
You remember when me and Judith
went round Europe for a month?

                       WILL
Oh yeahÖ How long ago was thatÖ it
was like ten-

                       ALEX
      (Interrupting)
Eleven.

                       WILL
      (Correcting
       himself)
-Eleven years ago. Back when you
had the hair.

4.

                       ALEX
Right. Well, anyway, we had got
ourselves into Romania, and for
some reason we were staying in
some shit hole town called C‚cat
Gaur„. You know the type of town,
the buildings all looking like
they could have been some great
work of architecture if they
hadnít been painted by someone
colour-blind and had those cold
iron bar balcony things welded on
to them. Everything crumbling and
peeling Ė even the food.

                       WILL
Grey skies?

                       ALEX
Nothing but. It was the grimmest
on our anniversary.

                       WILL
You had your anniversary on
vacation?

                       ALEX
Yeah, our third anniversary.

                       WILL
In Romania?

                       ALEX
Yeah, but it was only our third.

                       WILL
You didnít think of trying to end
up in Paris or Rome or something
romantic?

                       ALEX
We tried, but we justÖ didn't. It
wasn't as easy to get around
Europe back then. But that's
beside the point. The point is, I
tried to cheer her up beyond just
jewellery, so I went out for a
stroll on the town looking for any
sexy lingerie shops.

                       WILL
Whoa, thatís a bit of a risky
gift, isnít it?

5.

                       ALEX
Not for Jude, she loves that shit.

                       WILL
But in Romania? How long did it
take you to find a lingerie shop?

                       ALEX
Ages. Can you imagine how
difficult it is to find a red
light district in a dump? It was
all the fucking same!

                       WILL
But you found it?

                       ALEX
Oh yeah. I expected it to be
riddled with STDs, but it was
actually quite an upmarket place.
You might have even found
something like it on Rodeo Drive.

                       WILL
Really?

                       ALEX
Well, no, actually, but it was a
nice place, you get my point. I
got a few pairs of things and
left, and on my way back, I saw
the guy who lived in the flat next
to us. A big fucking guy, nothing
on top except one of those huge
moustaches, he was one of those
fat men who generically wear a
fishnet vest two sizes too small
to emphasise how hairy his chest
is.

                       WILL
Was he cool with you?

                       ALEX
Oh, when we first arrived, he
invited us in for drinks and spoke
pretty good English, so we had a
fair chat. But what he didnít tell
us was that he was a cop, and when
I saw him he was on duty.

6.

                       WILL
Donít tell me men buying kinky
underpants is illegal in Romania.

                       ALEX
Iím not sure about that, looking
back on it, I wish that was the
problem, but he did seem pissed
off about something, so he came
over, slammed me against the wall,
took my bag and gave it to his
partner. His partner looked
through it and pulled out a thong
that was pretty much just red
dental floss. They both looked at
me with the most fucking scary
grin, and the neighbour just said,
Ďweíre gonna have some funí, and
unzipped his fly.

                       WILL
Shit!

                       ALEX
Thatís when I was the most scared
in all my life, I was shitting
myself. Luckily, just as he was
getting his dick out, Judith came
down the road, called my name and
he backed off. I told her what
happened, and we packed up and
left that country on that night.

                       WILL
Is that why you cut your hair?

                       ALEX
I didnít want any more fucking
incidents like that again. I just
hate to think what example thatís
setting to kids.

                       WILL
      (Turning serious)
Hey, thatís a point, when are you
gonna get some kids? Youíre a
married man, married men are
supposed to have kids.

                       ALEX
      (Pauses and turns
       his head to Will
       with a clever
       smirk)

7.

                       ALEX (cont'd)
Thatís a point, when are you gonna
get an Afro? Youíre a-

                       WILL
      (Interrupting)
Hey, you can cut that out right
now

Alex laughs smugly

                       WILL
Iím serious man, donít even think
about going that way.

                       ALEX
      (Still laughing)
Come on, man, I need a partner
with an Afro.

                       WILL
Shut up!

                       ALEX
The least you could give me is
dreads!

                       WILL
Iíll get an Afro if you get a
confederate flag and put on a
hundred pounds.

                       ALEX
      (Still smiling)
Oo, that stings.

                       WILL
Does that not piss you off?

                       ALEX
Not really.

                       WILL
Oh yeah? Well, you never get
pissed off by anything.

                       ALEX
Thatís not true.

                       WILL
Ok, so what does piss you off?

8.

                       ALEX
Claims companies.

                       WILL
Claims companies?

                       ALEX
Yeah. Never liked them. Theyíre
immoral. Theyíre the dump of
America.

                       WILL
What have they ever done to you?

                       ALEX
Nothing, I just fucking hate them.
All theyíre good for is prank
calls.

                       WILL
Sure, but would you have the balls
to do it?

                       ALEX
Prank call them?

                       WILL
Yeah.

                       ALEX
Youíre asking if I have the balls
to do it?

                       WILL
You heard.

                       ALEX
I have more than the balls, I have
the need to do it. Iíve been doing
it since I was a kid, itís like a
drug now.

                       WILL
      (Reaches into his
       pocked and tosses
       Alex his cell
       phone)
Prove it then, big man.

                       ALEX
Alright then.
      (Catches the phone
       opens it up, hums
       a jingle to
            (MORE)

9.

                       ALEX (cont'd)
       himself, types in
       some numbers and
       looks up at Will
       with an annoyed
       expression)
And by the way, I donít like the
way they force their numbers into
your head with those shitty little
ditties.

Will smirks and Alex puts the phone to his ear, a
sexy-sounding female voice answers and the screen splits to
show her.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
Hi, Iíd like to place a claim for
an accident at work.

                       CLAIRE (On Phone)
Yes, can you tell me what
happened?

                       ALEX (On Phone)
I was shot.

                       CLAIRE (On Phone)
Shot? Can you give me a bit more
context? We canít usually do much
for shootings, if they were
unforeseen by the company and-

                       ALEX (On Phone)
      (Interrupting)
Well it was a colleague. Well, not
really a colleague, more of a
client.

                       CLAIRE (On Phone)
A client? Where do you work?

                       ALEX (On Phone)
Iím a teacher at Garfield High
School

Will sniggers silently

                       CLAIRE (On Phone)
So what youíre trying to tell me
is that one of your students shot
you.

10.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
Thatís right. What sort of claim
can I look to get from it?

                       CLAIRE (On Phone)
Look if this is some joke then-

                       ALEX (On Phone)
      (Interrupting)
No, Iím serious. And Iíd
appreciate it if you took this
seriously, Iím in a lot of pain,
you know.

Will stifles a greater laugh

                       CLAIRE (On Phone)
Well, why didnít I hear about it
in the news?

                       ALEX (On Phone)
Oh, it happens all the time, we
just ignore it now, we think
theyíre just attention seeking

Will is now struggling not to make any noise

                       ALEX (On Phone)
Can you at least help me out? I
hear fat people can sue anyone for
their self inflictions, surely I
have a case?

                       CLAIRE (On Phone)
Well, yes, of course. Can I get
your details?

                       ALEX (On Phone)
SureÖ

                       CLAIRE (On Phone)
Ok, your name?

                       ALEX (On Phone)
Ken Dawson

Will looks at him questioningly and Alex shrugs

                       CLAIRE (On Phone)
Age?

                       ALEX (On Phone)
24.

11.

                       CLAIRE (On Phone)
      (Makes a small
       approving noise)
Marital status?

                       ALEX (On Phone)
Single.

                       CLAIRE (On Phone)
      (Eyes widen in
       delight)
Oh, that's unfortunate.
Occupation? No, waitÖ
      (giggles
       embarrassedly)
I'm sorryÖ

                       ALEX (On Phone)
      (Smirks amusedly)
No, it's ok. Hey, how's about
getting your details?

                       CLAIRE (On Phone)
      (Flirting)
Ok, I'm Claire Brown, I'm 20, and
I'm also single.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
Single, eh? So no one will mind
you falling in love with a dashing
stranger?

                       CLAIRE (On Phone)
No one will mind. In fact, I fancy
taking one home and having him
ride me like a bull all night.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
Yeah? You want someone to come
round and throw you down on the
bed?

As Alex speaks, Claire starts breathing more deeply and
rubbing herself.

                       CLAIRE (On Phone)
Oh yeah.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
You want someone to rip your top
off?

12.

                       CLAIRE (On Phone)
Oh, God, yeah.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
You want someone to slide your
skirt off and whip off all your
underwear?

                       CLAIRE (On Phone)
      (Almost in ecstasy)
Oh, oh yeah!

                       ALEX (On Phone)
You want someone to run their hand
up your leg and up your thigh?

                       CLAIRE (On Phone)
Oh yeah! Yeah!

                       ALEX (On Phone)
You want someone to put a finger
in?

                       CLAIRE (On Phone)
      (Screams in
       ecstasy)
YEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAH!-

Alex interrupts her by stopping the call. He looks at Will
and laughs evilly

                       WILL
Well, youíre pretty fucking good.

                       ALEX
Hell yeah.

Opening credits roll.

EXT. WILL'S CAR - DAY

A few minutes on from the previous scene, the car enters the
docks, which look uninhabited except by ships, warehouses
and transport vehicles such as forklift trucks and regular
trucks.

                       WILL
Hey, this is the place. Remember,
weíre doing this legit; no crazy
shit, man. You donít have to shoot
to kill.

13.

                       ALEX
No reason for it, we got him a
bag. Iím gonna nail that
motherfucker for plugging my mom.
Heís going down for life.

                       WILL
But seriously, Alex, we wanna keep
the death toll to a minimum, this
time. Maybe you could put some
cuffs on the perps instead of
putting their brains on the wall.

                       ALEX
      (Chortling)
Iíll try.

The car comes to a quiet halt by the side of a warehouse,
the boot pops up and Will and Alex get out in and walk to
the boot symmetrically. Alex jumps back in mild shock after
seeing the contents of the boot.

                       ALEX
Shit, Will! You steal this from
Naam? I thought you said you
wanted to keep the death toll
down?

                       WILL
      (Pulls an M16 out
       of the car)
As a matter of fact, I bought this
perfectly legally, Iím a cop, you
know, not a fucking criminal.

                       ALEX
But why do you need a piece as big
as that?

                       WILL
      (Smiles and rubs
       the barrel)
Just my hobby.

                       ALEX
I think basketball was a lot
safer. Come on lets go.

14.

INSIDE THE WAREHOUSE

Alex and Will are creeping around the crates that are
stacked everywhere in the room except for a large gap in the
centre, catching glimpses of what appears to be a huge coke
exchange in the centre, there are at least twenty people
there armed to the teeth, several cars and bikes, the
central man, who is holding a suitcase full of money is
Ricardo, but this is not explained at this point. They are
definitely split into two groups, a group of smartly dressed
Hispanics led by Ricardo, and the other gang is comprised
cool looking people, long hair, jeans and leather jackets
etc.

                       ALEX (Whispering)
Stay here. On three after my
signal.

                       WILL
Youíre the boss. It seems.

Alex pulls out his .357 desert eagle and the camera follows
him around as he travels in a wide arc around the room. He
comes to a halt, and the camera swings round to see Will.
Alex pulls back on the slide and steps out into the middle
of the deal, aiming his guns at the dealers and holding up
his badge.

                       ALEX
Oh, shit, youíre bad, bad people.

The dealers swing round and aim at him, some looking in
disbelief

                       ALEX
I don't think you're mommas would
be happy with this, do you? Come
on, put your guns down while we
call for backup to take you all
down to the station -

Alex notices one of the dealers without a gun reach for his
pocket and interrupts himself.

                       ALEX
DON'T FUCKING MOVE!
      (Pause)
We've been trying for so long to
pin you jackasses down, and now we
can. Taste justice, boys.

15.

                       RICARDO
Justice is nowhere near done,
asshole.

                       ALEX
And what do you know about it,
punk?

Alex moves towards the group, but one of the non-Hispanic
gangsters shoots at him out of fear with the others shortly
following suit, so Alex dives behind the nearest crate just
before a wave of bullets strikes the side of it. He signals
to Will, who is crouching behind a crate. Will counts to
three silently and comes up and showers the many vehicles
with bullets. Alex ducks back into the semicircle that he
followed earlier, occasionally stopping when he has the
chance to shoot, but killing no one. Will has already run
back to the car and started it as Alex runs outside, diving
into the car to avoid the gunfire coming from the fleeing
vehicles.

                       ALEX
I give them an easy option, and
they never take it, what the
hellís with that?

                       WILL
      (Sarcastically)
Beats me. Take this.

Will tosses Alex the M16. As he spins the car around, Alex
leans out the window and presses the trigger, but no bullets
come out, Ricardo is now out of range.

                       ALEX
Shit man, where are the magazines?

                       WILL
Under the seat.

Alex pulls out a briefcase from under the seat which is
stocked with magazines

                       ALEX
      (Looks at Will)
Thatís some hobby you got there,
man.
      (He loads the gun
       and picks up the
       radio)
Backup requested in the region of
the Santa Monica docks, suspects
are fleeing in several shot up
looking vehicles: two red 1970s
            (MORE)

16.

                       ALEX (cont'd)
Cadillacs, one black Buick, one
silver Pontiac, and about five
Triumph motorbikes, all black. At
least twenty suspects, armed like
a bunch of fucking lunatic GI Joes
and just as fucking insane.

Alex puts the radio back

                       WILL
Ricardoís gang are in the
Cadillacs.

                       ALEX
Follow them then, but who were the
other assholes?

                       WILL
I donít know, they must have been
keeping a real low profile and be
real careful with their
connections with their dealers.

                       ALEX
But Ricardo has his own dealers,
why is he getting involved in
another gang?

                       WILL
Probably secure business. He saw a
new threat, and decided to make it
part of his empire. It is so much
safer when you have more guns on
the streets, and they can probably
bring more shit into the country
now.

                       ALEX
Well, whoever they are, weíre
gonna have to bag Ďem, theyíre
starting to piss me off.

                       WILL
Leave them to the rookies; you've
got an age-old personal vendetta
to sort out.
      (His attention
       snaps to the
       fleeing suspcets
       in front of him)
SHIT! THERE THEY ARE!

17.

                       ALEX (Yelling)
COME ON, MOTHERFUCKERS, IíLL POP A
FEW CAPS IN YOUR ASSES!

Alex leans out of the window and starts shooting. They are
now on a very wide street with the sirens on, the two
Cadillacs are weaving through the traffic and ignoring all
lights. They are approaching a junction at which one of the
cars looks distinctly like itís going to turn off, the other
as if it will carry on forwards. Luckily there is a squad
car joining the pursuit, to whom Alex indicates to follow
the car that is turning off.

CUTS TO A LARGE HOLLYWOOD ROAD

The Firebird is being chased by three squad cars. There are
four people in the car, three of whom are firing machine
pistols at the pursuers. The Firebird drives up onto a curb,
almost hitting several pedestrians, and turns down a wide
alleyway. Two cars follow and the other carries on elsewhere
to head the Firebird off. One of the bullets from the
machine pistols hits the driver of the first squad car,
which then veers off into a small obstruction that sends the
car flipping up into the air, so the second squad car
accelerates to avoid being blocked or crushed. The car lands
and the passenger cop is getting out and dragging his dead
partner out. The squad car that is now chasing the Firebird
accelerates hard as the two cars come to the end of the
alleyway. The squad car gets shot up a lot, but manages to
perform a P.I.T manoeuvre on the Firebird, stopping it from
getting anywhere in a hurry, and the squad car that had gone
round the block now flies in and smashes into the gang car.

CUTS BACK TO ALEX AND WILL ON A WIDE ROAD

Alex and Will are alone pursuing the perps in one of the
Cadillacs. They are drawing close to a large lorry carrying
a load of drainpipes

                       ALEX
Hey, man, pull up to the truck
over there, I got a plan.

                       WILL
I did say no crazy shit, so watch
it.

                       ALEX
      (Looks at Will and
       grins)
No, weíre gonna have to do it the
old way.

18.

                       WILL
Oh, fuck. Whatever.

Alex opens the door of the car and jumps to the back of the
lorry. He picks up a couple of pipes and takes them to the
side, throwing them into the open door of Willís car. He
then jumps back onto the roof of Willís car, provoking an
irritated and slightly surprised reaction from Will. Alex
struggles to get on top of the roof, and when he does, gets
the pipes and the M16 and pulls them onto the roof with him,
he is now crouching with the gun in his hands and the pipes
in between his feet.

                       ALEX (Yelling)
GET AS CLOSE AS YOU CAN, IíLL BE
COVERING YOUR ASS.

                       WILL (Yelling)
YOUíRE CRAZY, MAN!

                       ALEX
SO ARE YOU.

                       WILL
OH, YEAH.

Will puts his foot down and the Cadillac comes into view.
Alex starts firing and the Cadillac starts wavering on the
road

19.

CUTS TO A SMALLER ROAD

There are three of the triumphs which have Uzi wielding
gangsters riding them, and there are two squad cars tailing
them. The group is travelling down a wide road with high
rise buildings all around; the squad cars are travelling
very erratically to avoid the bullets. They approach a short
set of steps on the right hand side of the road, attached to
a building; they lead up a storey to a door on the right
hand side of the staircase, so that one of the bikes rides
up it and launches into the window of an office block not
too far away, which is on the corner of a junction. It
wheels around 45 degrees to the right in the office, revs up
and accelerates to the window that it is now facing, flying
out of it. One of the policemen in the squad cars sees the
bike flying off onto the road to the right, and heads down
it in order to apprehend the dealer. The other squad car is
having difficulty weaving through the traffic with the
agility of the bikes, which a vigilante truck driver
notices, who then veers his truck in front of one of the
approaching bikes, who crashes into the side of the truck,
and smashes his face into it; the driver gets out and holds
him their until a traffic duty cop arrests him himself. The
'stunt bike' rider is now on a smaller road being closely
followed by the car that tried to apprehend him. He turns on
to a dirt trail with a gate which he thinks is too small for
the squad car, which soon smashes its way through it. After
a bit of shooting and swerving from the car, knocking over
various obstacles, they approach a sharp turn a few yards in
front of a large cliff. The bike skids to turn, but the
squad car hits it into a rock which sends it flying down the
cliff; the bike is shown slowly falling through the air,
with the rider holding on for dear life, and crashes into a
rock, exploding, with the rider being thrown forwards into a
tree.

CUTS BACK TO SMALLER ROAD

The camera is now following the final bike which is
travelling on the left hand side of the road, with the squad
car on the right. Unfortunately for the biker, the right
hand side of the road suddenly gets a lot emptier, which
allows the car to accelerate forward just in front of the
bike and then sharply turn, ploughing into the side of the
bike, sending the rider flying.

20.

CUTS BACK TO ALEX AND WILL

Alex holds up the pipes when Willís car is right next to the
Cadillac, and having blasted the back window off with
gunfire, shoves the pipes through it, hitting the two in the
back in the head and knocking them out. He then slides down
the pipes - which are running parallel - into the back seat
of the car, aiming his 357 at the head of the driver and
throwing a pair of cuffs at the passenger, none of them are
Ricardo.

                       ALEX
Cuff yourself, you son of a bitch.

One of the people next to him regains consciousness and
tries to battle the guns out of his grip, but eventually he
manages to open the door and kick the perp out, who is then
hit by Willís car. Alex gets the driver to pull over and get
out and leaves him and the two passengers cuffed on the side
of the road, who then get picked up by a couple of squad
cars. Alex gets in the Cadillac and drives it away, next to
Will's car.

                       ALEX (Yelling)
GET A LOCATION ON THE OTHER
CADILLAC; NONE OF THOSE PERPS WERE
RICARDO.

                       WILL (Yelling)
      (A delay)
ITS SOUTHBOUND ON ROUTE 405.

                       ALEX
LETíS GO THERE THEN.

Both cars spin around and head in the other direction.

CUTS TO OFF-FREEWAY ROAD

The scene now cuts to the Buick, which is driving calmly.

                       FRONT PASSENGER
      (Coming off a cell
       phone)
Shit, I think Billy got busted.

                       BACK PASSENGER 1
What about the others?

21.

                       FRONT PASSENGER
Them too, probably. They were
being chased; I think the Firebird
was hot. All I heard after a while
was a crackling.

                       BACK PASSENGER 2
You recon theyíll squeal?

                       DRIVER
Thatís not our main concern. If
they were hot, we probably are
too. Weíll be back to the safe
house in five; weíll respray this
shit then.

The camera is now in a squad car close behind the Buick

                       DRIVER COP
Hey, isnít that the Buick that
Carson caught at the docks?

                       PASSENGER COP
I donít know, follow it and find
out.

                       DRIVER COP
Better be discreet, he said that
theyíre armed to the teeth.

                       PASSENGER COP
Shit.

The squad car turns off and follows at a slow pace,
eventually both cars go into a relatively long cul-de-sac,
and the squad car pulls outside a house several doors away,
and the Buick pulls outside a house near the end of the road
and its suspicious owners climb out.

                       PASSENGER COP
Oh crap, theyíve got huge guns.

                       DRIVER COP
Holy shit theyíve seen us.

The gangsters start firing, and the squad car spins around
to get to safety, but one of the tyres is soon blown. The
two cops get out and start shooting back, and soon the
gangsters realise they arenít going to get anywhere, and
climb back into the Buick, which then speeds out to the
squad car. The two cops dive into the nearest garden and one
of them manages to shoot the driver in the face, which then
swerves into the squad car causing both of them explode.

22.

CUT TO A SLOPING STREET

Will and Alex are seen flying over the top of the street in
the Chevelle and the Cadillac. They skid back on to the road
beside the squad car chasing the other Cadillac, and
accelerate right up close to the Cadillac, ramming it from
the sides. After a few rams, one of the wheels on Alexís
Cadillac is shot, and a grenade flies through the front
windscreen, landing on the back seat.

                       ALEX
FUCK NO!

Seeing this, Alex dives out of the door and on to the side
of the road, watching the Cadillac explode. When the squad
car that was following arrives, he jumps into the open
left-hand back door, and climbs into the front; they are now
heading towards Long Beach.

CUT TO WIDE, FLAT ROAD

We are now with the two remaining Triumphs. They are
currently tailless, but are still driving crazily. They are
soon spotted by an off-duty, plain-clothes cop who is
sitting in his own car, eating a donut.

                       OFF DUTY COP
Ah damn. Son of a bitch.

Having seen them, the off duty cop puts the siren on the
roof and gives chase. As the bikers see him, they instantly
start shooting at him, demolishing his windscreen and
bonnet; naturally, he pulls out his .45 and returns the
favour, hitting the fuel tank of one of the bikes, and fuel
starts pouring out behind him in a trail. The screen cuts to
an old man taking a last drag of a cigarette, and the bikes
and the cop flies by in front of him. He is surprised, but
nonetheless, carries on with his business, and flicks the
cigarette-butt into the road, which proceeds to ignite the
trail of fuel, and causes the bike to explode; the old man
shiftily walks away from the incident wide eyed and silent.
The cop is chasing the remaining bike, swerving crazily to
avoid the bullets. When the biker stops shooting to reload,
the officer leans out and shoots the biker in the arm,
causing him to drop the gun, which gets caught up in the
spokes and sends the bike flying, tossing the rider into the
oncoming traffic; naturally he ends up on the windscreen of
a particularly large SUV and flops unconscious onto the
road.

23.

CUT BACK TO ALEX AND WILL

                       ALEX
      (To squad car
       driver)
Pull me up next to Will.

                       COP
Who? Anderson?

                       ALEX
Yeah, Anderson. What other fucking
Will do you know driving around
here?

                       COP
Geez, take it easy, fella.

                       ALEX
Just concentrate on what youíre
doing, please.

The squad car draws up to the left side of the Chevelle and
Alex leans out the window, yelling to Will

                       ALEX
TOSS ME THE M16, IíM GONNA NAIL
THESE BASTARDS.

                       WILL
WILL DO.

Will throws the M16 to Alex, who catches it. Alex starts
shooting, as the road approaches the sea. Alex hits three of
the tyres on the Cadillac which swerves out of control, but
eventually gets back quite stable on the road again. Will
accelerates to the right side of the car and shoots through
the window, hitting the driver, causing the car to swerve
out of control again, hit a barrier and flip into the ocean.
The Chevelle and the squad car stop at the waters edge, and
the three cops get out, aiming the guns into the water. The
gangsters climb out of the car, treading water.

                       ALEX
Shit, none of them are Ricardo,
either.

                       WILL
What the fuck?

24.

                       ALEX
Take these bastards back to the
station. Will, Iím gonna need your
car.

                       WILL
Go ahead.

Alex gets into the Chevelle and spins it round.

CUT TO DOCK

Several dock workers are at the scene of the deal, and are
generally hanging around. Ricardo is hiding behind one of
the crates near the door, and when he feels the moment is
right, draws his coat up round the bottom half of his face
and walks out of the warehouse. He doesn't get far before an
arm grabs him and slams him up against the warehouse wall,
with a gun pointing in his face; the owner of the arm and
the gun is Alex.

                       ALEX
      (With an inane
       grin on his face)
Ha-ha, you slimy asshole, thought
you could get away, son of a
bitch?
      (Now maniacally
       laughing)
Kicking yourself, now, I bet, but
youíre going down for life,
motherfucker.

Alex punches him in the face, and starts beating the crap
into him for a sustained amount of time.

INT. ALEX'S APARTMENT - NIGHT

Alex and his wife - Judith - are settling for a night in.
The apartment has a very large window overlooking the tall
buildings and neon lights of L.A, and has an awful
untidiness about it, but still looks like someone's home.
The phone rings, and Judith answers.

                       JUDITH (On Phone)
Hello?

                       WILL (On Phone)
Hey Jude.

25.

                       JUDITH (On Phone)
      (Whispering to
       Alex)
Itís Will.
      (Back to Will,
       sarcastically)
Ha-ha, I still say it got less
funny the two-hundredth time.

                       WILL (On Phone)
Yeah, maybe. Listen, did Alex say
anything about today?

                       JUDITH (On Phone)
NoÖ

                       WILL (On Phone)
Well, maybe heíd like to, fucking
best day heís had for years.

                       JUDITH (On Phone)
      (Hesitantly)
ÖWhat?

                       WILL (On Phone)
Remember Ricardo?

                       JUDITH (On Phone)
Oh, yeah, I remember the son of a
bitch.

                       WILL (On Phone)
WellÖ I donít think heíll be
pushing any drugs for a good long
timeÖ

                       JUDITH (On Phone)
      (Looks round at
       Alex who is
       grinning absurdly)
Wow, that explains the hideous
scars. I was getting slightly
worried.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
Like I said, it was a rough day.

                       JUDITH (On Phone)
Was he hurt? Was Ricardo hurt?

26.

                       WILL (On Phone)
More than a little, heís nursing a
broken nose, and his pride.
Listen; put Alex on, will you?

                       JUDITH (On Phone)
Sure.

Judith hands phone to Alex

                       WILL (On Phone)
You holding up ok? Not bleeding
everywhere?

                       ALEX (On Phone)
Not too much, Jude still wonít let
me near the furniture though.

Alex flashes a wink at Judith who pouts back

                       WILL (On Phone)
Yeah, well listen, one of
Ricardoís busters squealed and
told us that Ricardo had bought a
factory in Inglewood, and
apparently he did it up into kind
of like a gang social club, Iím
guessing with drugs being put on
to the street. Itís his main
haunt.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
Shit, man, thatís gold. What did
you do to get him to tell you
that?

                       WILL (On Phone)
Not much, he says heís pissed off
with Ricardo at the moment, so
heís officially an unreliable
source; they think heís looking to
get out early. He gave me the very
address.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
This is the mother load, man; we
better tool up and take it all
down in a couple of days.

                       WILL (On Phone)
I think we better. I better head,
man.

27.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
      (Turns serious and
       quiet, out of
       Judithís range of
       hearing)
Listen, man, before you go I want
to tell you this. Before today, I
was considering leaving the force,
you know, seriously considering
it. Now Iíve got this bastard, Iím
starting to have some sort of
faith in judiciary system again.
And itís all thanks to you, man.

                       WILL (On Phone)
Hey, I didnít do it all, it was-

                       ALEX (On Phone)
      (Interrupting)
No you did, man. You were covering
my back.

                       WILL (On Phone)
Hey, itís the least I could do.
Iím just helping out and old
buddy.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
      (Smiling, a tear
       almost reaching
       his eye)
Thanks, man

                       WILL (On Phone)
Iím out.

Alex puts the phone down and turns slowly to Judith, who is
now in her underwear

                       ALEX
Looking good tonight, baby.

                       JUDITH
      (Looking taken
       aback in an
       obviously fake
       way)
Any different from any other
night?

                       ALEX
Well, most other nights, Iím no so
certain Iím gonna get some.

28.

                       JUDITH
      (Smiling widely)
What makes you so sure? You can't
possibly tell yet.

                       ALEX
Donít give that lawyer crap to me,
you know you were gonna let me at
your sweet little undies.

                       JUDITH
      (Laughing)
You wanna be sure?

                       ALEX
Hell, yeah.
      (Suddenly, looking
       troubled and
       hesitant)
HoneyÖ just completely
irrelevantlyÖ can I ask you
something?

                       JUDITH
Shoot.

                       ALEX
Itís just with recent eventsÖ I
had been consideringÖ
      (Pause)
Ö How would you feel if hung up my
badgeÖ for good?

                       JUDITH
      (After a
       thoughtful pause)
Well, weíre not exactly begging
for scraps here, but it was always
your dream to fight crime.

                       ALEX
It was. But I just havenít been
able to do that recently. I
thought maybe Iíd be able to fight
it not with a gun, but with my
experiences. I want to get into
the criminal community and talk to
them.

                       JUDITH
This isn't you.

29.

                       ALEX
      (Slightly offended)
What do you mean?

                       JUDITH
Listen, baby, Iím not supposed to
tell you this, butÖ
      (She takes a
       breath)
The police psychiatrists at the
station have been talking to me-

                       ALEX
      (Interrupts)
Those fuckers? Are you seriously
telling me you're taking advice
from assholes who have never even
been out in the field? Who have no
idea what goes on in a cop's head?
Who have never seen what real cops
have seen?

                       JUDITH
Please, baby, listen.

                       ALEX
      (Looking still
       pissed off)
Iím sorry. Go on.

                       JUDITH
Well they phoned and they told me
a lot of things, but the general
gist of what they were saying is
that your actions over the years
having been growing more
irrational and erratic, and they
are worried for your mental
health.

                       ALEX
      (Sarcastically)
Nice of them to consider me.

                       JUDITH
I'm concerned, too.

                       ALEX
Oh, come on!

                       JUDITH
      (Tears starting to
       well up in her
       eyes)

30.

                       JUDITH (cont'd)
Honey, Iíve been noticing it too!

                       ALEX
      (Stands up and
       starts to walk
       away)
BULLSHIT!

                       JUDITH
      (Grabbing Alex)
Itís true! Every day you come home
with more cuts and bruises, Iím
hearing of more people trying to
get compensation for police
brutality, and youíve become
obsessed with your police work
andÖ
      (hesitates)
wellÖ less attentive to me.

                       ALEX
      (Stops in his
       tracks)
Oh, baby, Iím so sorryÖ

                       JUDITH
      (Standing up to
       hug him)
No, itís OkÖ

                       ALEX
Jude, I shouldn't ever-

                       JUDITH
      (Interrupting but
       comforting)
Itís Ok, youíve been stressedÖ

                       ALEX
All this shit youíve been throughÖ

                       JUDITH
Itís Ok; I was out of line saying-

                       ALEX
      (Stops her and
       looks into her
       eyes)
Jude, I want you to know that I
would never willingly let anything
stop me from loving you. If Iím
ever like this again, I want you
to tell me straight away and Iíll
            (MORE)

31.

                       ALEX (cont'd)
put everything aside to be your
husband.

Judith takes hold of Alexís face and kisses him, lightly at
first, but then increasingly passionately, they then fall
back on the bed and begin to make love.

INT. POLICE STATION - DAY

Alex walks up to the police station with a skip in his step
and a broad smile on his face. It's another sunny day, and
the station has a certain dry, urban feel. He opens the door
and hugs a nerdy looking cop who is startled by the whole
ordeal. Many faces are turning to him.

                       JENNI
      (As Alex skips by)
Well, looks like someone got some.

                       ALEX
My dear woman, you donít know the
half of it.

                       JENNI
What?

                       ALEX
I wouldnít call it just Ďsomeí.
      (Winks)

                       JENNI
      (Raises eyebrows
       and giggles
       bashfully)

Alex catches eyes with Will who is leaning on the wall
outside the Captainís office looking slightly depressed, and
walks over to him.

                       ALEX
Yo, man, whatís up?

                       WILL
Hey, man, I donít know how to tell
you thisÖ

Ricardo walks past them without cuffs or any police escort
and raises his middle finger at Alex whose face is turning
furious.

32.

                       WILL
      (Whispering
       sideways)
Heís been released.

                       RICARDO
Hey, dickhead, come to me when you
want to see yoí momma.

                       ALEX
      (Flying at Ricardo)
YOU BASTARD, IíLL KILL YOU! IíLL
MAKE YOU CHOKE ON YOUR OWN
MOTHERFUCKING TINY BALLS!

Alex starts pounding into Ricardo and is then pulled off by
Will, Ricardoís face is now cut and bleeding, Alex is
sitting on the floor, leaning back on Willís legs

                       WILL
No! That's the exact reason why
he's being let out in the first
place.

                       RICARDO
Man, you're an idiot. Must run in
the family, eh?

Alex jerks towards Ricardo, to be stopped by Will, Ricardo
leaves the station, Alex starts twitching in an angry
manner.

                       WILL
Come on man, we've gotta speak to
Ted. We're gonna get him later.

                       ALEX
      (Muttering under
       his breath)
That son of a bitchÖ Iíll kill
himÖ the little cuntÖ Iíll rip out
his brains and show them to himÖ
donít worry momÖ

                       WILL
Dude, you're trippin'. Come on,
let's talk to Ted.

                       ALEX
      (Twitches, and
       looks up as if
       nothing just
       happened)

33.

                       ALEX (cont'd)
Yeah, man, sure.

Alex stands up and brushes himself off and the two of them
go into the office Will was waiting by. Once in, they both
sit down at the desk at which two senior looking officers
are sitting at; the one on the left is Ted who is younger,
about mid forties, and the other is older and is the police
chief, about sixty, they both look rather stern.

                       WILL
      (Looking suddenly
       scared)
Chief!-

                       CHIEF
      (With slight
       malice)
I think I better start this one,
Mr Anderson.

Will and Alex both nod, Will gulps and Alex rolls his eyes.

                       CHIEF
You managed to arrest quite a
number suspected narcotics traders
yesterday, am I not correct in
saying so?

                       WILL
Well not by myself, there were
other guysÖ

                       CHIEF
I congratulate you on this,
      (Alex and Will
       start to relax,
       but are tensed up
       again as Chief
       becomes sharp)
BUT! You acted with complete
disregard for public safety,
without consideration of police
conduct, and without any thought
for the rights of those who you
were pursuing.

                       ALEX
THOUGHT FOR THOSE BASTARDS? ARE
YOU SNIFFING WHAT THEY'RE PUSHING?
HAVE YOU GOT YOU'RE HEAD SO FAR UP
YOUR ASS THAT YOU CAN'T TELL A
CIVILIAN FROM A FUCKING CRIMINAL?

34.

                       CHIEF
      (Rising from his
       seat)
MR CARSON, PLEASE!

                       WILL
With all due respect, sir, if we
had not apprehended the suspects
they could easily have killed many
civilians, they were fully armed
and-

                       CHIEF
      (Interrupting and
       losing it)
I DONíT FUCKING CARE! YOU WERE
COMPLETELY FUCKING CRAZY AND NOW
YOUíVE FUCKED UP THE ONE CHANCE WE
HAD OF CATCHING THE BIGGEST
FUCKING DEALER IN TOWN BY BEATING
HIM TO A BLOODY FUCKING PULP!
      (Straightens his
       tie and
       continues,
       quieter but still
       menacing)
Do you realise that Ricardo had
filed a charge against you,
Carson, for your treatment of him
at the moment of his arrest? You
didnít even have any evidence to
convict him, there was no need to
kick the shit in to him at any
point, and technically, youíve
attacked an innocent civilian!

                       ALEX
Technically is bullshit. I beat
him to a pulp because he has
killed too many innocent
civilians. I consider it the least
I could do.

                       CHIEF
You broke the law-

                       ALEX
      (Interrupting)
The law? Fuck the law. I am the
law.

35.

                       CHIEF
No one is the law, and if you
start abusing peopleís civil
rights, you make yourself the
scum.

                       ALEX
Ricardo has abused so many other
peopleís civil rights, heís beyond
scum. He has no civil rights.

                       CHIEF
That is not your position to
decide. The law states he has
civil rights, and the law states
that if there is no evidence
against someone, there is no case
and he is not a criminal Ė end of
story.

                       ALEX
I had-

                       CHIEF
      (Interrupting)
End of story.

                       ALEX
SHUT THE FUCK UP AND LISTEN! I saw
the bastard with coke in his
hands, is that not evidence
enough?

                       CHIEF
Not from you. Iíve been told
youíre mentally unstable. To me
that means your word counts for
jackshit.

                       ALEX
WHAT?!? IT FUCKING DOESNíT!

                       CHIEF
It does, because I donít trust a
fucking word you sayÖ unlessÖ
      (Turning to Will)
Anderson, did you see Ricardo
Suarez with any narcotics about
his person?

                       WILL
      (Looking pained
       and hesitant,
       with a quick
            (MORE)

36.

                       WILL (cont'd)
       flash of the eyes
       to Alex)
No sir, I did not.

                       CHIEF
There you go, I donít want you
going anywhere near Ricardo.
Either of you. Captain Haley, you
may take it from here.

Chief exits

                       TED
      (Looking tired and
       slightly
       depressed)
Sorry boys. Itís the way the law
works. Itís out of our control.

                       ALEX
I saw the bastard!

                       TED
      (As
       sympathetically
       as possible)
You heard the chief; he doesnít
think youíre a reliable witness,
Alex, and he's calling the shots
here.

                       ALEX
      (Rolling his head
       in anger)
I swear to God-

                       WILL
      (Interrupting
       sternly)
Alex. No one here thinks youíre
crazy. But can you not see why
people might think you are?

                       ALEX
      (Annoyed)
Shit, manÖ

                       WILL
Answer the question.

37.

                       ALEX
They see a man who cares about
justice, but they just canít get
out of their liberal mindset and
see that anyone prepared to risk
his life for it actually does
care. Why is it suddenly when a
man has feelings he is suddenly
considered crazy?

                       TED
Blame the people of America.
Theyíve shied away from nobility
in favour of prosperity. Canít
take a scratch without finding
someone who will pay for it.

                       ALEX
Youíre telling me. Iíve been
wondering, where are people in
law? Why is it just robots now?
Canít search anywhere without a
warrantÖ without an invitation,
what are we, vampires? Everyoneís
too fucking scared of going to
court for the wrong reasons.

                       WILL
But you gotta remember, there
still are people who believe.
There are people who will fight
for their loved ones, for their
principles, for America.

                       ALEX
Are they in fucking hiding?

A pause. Will and Ted look contemplative, Alex is glaring at
the middle distance in front of him with a slight scowl.

                       WILL
Talk to Judith about this. Itís
what she agreed to be there for.

                       ALEX
      (Snapping himself
       out of his
       thought processes)
YeahÖ yeah, maybe I should. Damn,
I donít know what Iíd do without
her.

38.

                       TED
      (Starting to smile)
Iíll tell you what, take a couple
of days off.

                       ALEX
      (Smiles)
I wasnít intending to get your
permission.

Alex leaves

                       WILL
I donít think heís going to come
back for a good while.

                       TED
I want you to keep track of him,
Will. Make sure he doesnít
jeopardise any investigations or
anything.

                       WILL
You want me to trail my best
friend?

                       TED
No, no, no. Just check up on him
every now and then. He has a cell
phone, doesnít he?

                       WILL
Yeah, he does, he always leaves it
at home, though. But Iíll do that.
Do you not want me to take care of
any of the reports from yesterday?

                       TED
No, donít worry. Youíve done
plenty of work; just have a bit of
a rest.

                       WILL
YeahÖ rest. Fair enough. What are
you gonna do now?

                       TED
Sort out some of these drive-bys,
I think; apparently there was a
guy who got killed fucking some
whore up against a lamppost. Poor
bastard.

39.

                       WILL
      (Laughing dryly)
That sounds messy. She still
alive?

                       TED
No. Donít think sheíd want to be,
though, apparently he had...
warts.

                       WILL
      (After a bit of
       silent laughter)
Gang related, then, was it?

                       TED
Yeah. We think he wasnít paying up
or something. Usual story.

                       WILL
When are we gonna get a different
story around here?

                       TED
When Hell freezes over, or when
the Chief takes his head out of
the Mayorís ass. Which ever
happens last.

                       WILL
Huh, yeahÖ

                       TED
Something wrong?

                       WILL
Chief really pisses me off. I
think I might end up killing him.

                       TED
You gotta stop letting him push
you around. Shout him down a bit.

                       WILL
      (Sarcastically)
What, like Alex did?

                       TED
Perhaps more tactfully. I think
youíre more capable of that.

40.

                       WILL
Iíll keep that in mind. I better
go see where Alex has got to.

                       TED
Take it easy, Will.

                       WILL
See you around.

Will stands up and leaves

EXT. ALEX'S CAR - DAY

The scene starts with Alex in his Chevy, driving furiously,
the camera focused on the side of his face, flicking in
between him and the road. He suddenly jerks the steering
wheel to the left and crashes into the car next to him. He
pulls over and he gets out of his car, and runs to the owner
of the car he hit, who is Ricardo. He grabs him by the shirt
collar and punches him, and Ricardo starts to fight back,
ending in a major fray at the side of the road. After a
while Ricardoís head ends up smashed on his own car, and
Alex is now standing over Ricardoís heap of a body, both of
them bleeding profusely, and looking particularly angry.

                       ALEX
Ha, punk, you donít get away from
me that easy.

Alex kicks Ricardo

                       RICARDO
You oughta be careful, your ass is
gonna get fired soon if you donít
stay within the law. Then how you
gonna even touch me?

                       ALEX
HA! Thatís where youíre wrong,
shithead! I no longer work with
the law. Iím like a shadow, Iíll
always be on you and nothing can
stop me.

                       RICARDO
Like I care, that just means
youíll be taken down easier.

Ricardo tries to get up, but it is tripped up by Alex, and
smashes his head into his car again.

41.

                       ALEX
Oh, you think so? Tell you what,
Iíll wager you canít kill me, or
stop me from catching and poppiní
you.

Ricardo gets up, unhindered by Alex and looks into his face
with extra menace

                       RICARDO
Fine. I hope you gotta family
grave.

                       ALEX
      (Twitches
       violently, but
       then makes a calm
       face)
Tell you what, since Iím such a
nice guy, Iíll give you a dayís
head start.

Alex punches Ricardo in the face with extra vigour which
sends him flying backwards into his car, and smashing the
window.

                       ALEX
Iíll get your cunt-ass later.

Alex returns to his car and drives off.

EXT. OUTSIDE POLICE STATION - DAY

Will is on a bench outside of the police station. He rises
slowly, pulls out his cell-phone, dials and puts it to his
ear.

                       WILL (On Phone)
Hey, Alex, whereíre you at?

                       ALEX (On Phone)
In my car, why?

                       WILL (On Phone)
I just need to know you havenít
done anything irrational in since
you left the station.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
What, like beating up Ricardo?

42.

                       WILL (On Phone)
Yeah, like beating up Ricardo.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
Yeah, I beat up Ricardo.

                       WILL (On Phone)
      (In resigned
       disbelief)
You beat up Ricardo.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
Yeah, I beat up Ricardo.

                       WILL (On Phone)
      (Long exhalation)
Alex, man, I thought Ted told you
to take a break.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
He told me to take a couple of
days off.

                       WILL (On Phone)
Kicking the shit into someone
isnít exactly my idea of a good
day off.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
But, Will, thatís because youíre
normal. To me, this means there
are no regulations for treating
criminals.

                       WILL (On Phone)
Please take it easy, man. I donít
want to have to bail you out, or
identify you at the coronerís or
anything.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
      (Chuckling lightly)
Donít worry, you wonít have to. I
was planning to chill at home
doing jackshit.

                       WILL (On Phone)
Jackshit, that sounds like an
idea.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
So what are you doing?

43.

                       WILL (On Phone)
Pretty much the same as you. Ted
told me to make sure you donít try
to drive of a cliff or something.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
He really does think I'm insane,
then.

                       WILL
      (Uncertain pause)

                       ALEX (On Phone)
You don't think I'm insane, do
you?

                       WILL (On Phone)
Hey, if you say youíre not going
to drive off a cliff, then I
believe youíre not going to drive
off a cliff.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
      (Back to laughing)
Ok then, Iím not going to drive
off a cliff.

                       WILL (On Phone)
Good to hear. You go home and
chill the fuck out.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
I was thinking of stopping off at
a bar or something.

A car pulls up in the near distance

                       WILL (On Phone)
Hey maybe Iíll join you later

                       ALEX (On Phone)
Thatíll be sweet, letís hit it
like old times.

                       WILL (On Phone)
Sure thing, oh shit, I gotta go;
someone just parked in the no
parking zone outside the station.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
      (Jokingly serious)
BASTARD!

44.

                       WILL (On Phone)
Catch you later man.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
GET THAT BASTARD!

Will ends the call and walks up to the motorist - Andrew
Thompson - who has just parked illegally

                       WILL
Hey, idiot, is it the air in L.A?

                       THOMPSON
What are you on about, crazy
fuckhead?

                       WILL
Is it the air that makes people
like you so unbelievably fucking
stupid?

                       THOMPSON
      (Aggressively,
       putting his fists
       up)
Oh, you want some, pal?

                       WILL
See there you go with the
unbelievably stupid thing, again.
Maybe itís in your genes?

                       THOMPSON
Come on then, cunt!

Thompson throws a punch at Will with his left, which is
coolly dodged. Will grabs his arm, and twists it behind his
back.

                       WILL
Well, the first stupid thing you
did was park in a no parking zone
right outside a police station.
The next stupid thing you did was
swear at me, I don't need that.
And after that, well, trying to
start a fight with a cop is just
plain motherfucking insanity.

Will pushes his arm so that it starts to crack

45.

                       WILL
Now letís get you in the station
before you do anything else that
convinces me that you should no
longer be in the damn gene-pool.

                       THOMPSON
Look, if I knew you were a cop, I
would have-

                       WILL
      (Interrupts)
AND WHY SHOULD I BE TREATED ANY
DAMN BETTER BECAUSE I'M A COP?!?
WHAT, DO YOU START FIGHTS WITH
RANDOM GUYS SO LONG AS THEY AREN'T
COPS OR SOMETHING?

                       THOMPSON
      (Cowering)
I donít know, man, I thought youíd
like the perks of being a cop-

                       WILL
      (Interrupting)
SOME OF US ARENíT CORRUPT
FUCKHEADS LIKE YOU!

Will drags the motorist into the station.

INT. LIQUOR STORE - DAY

The liquor store is a drab, run down joint with no decor bar
thousands of fairly identical bottles. Alex walks
purposefully up to the counter, puts his money in front of
the store clerk, who is a young adult barely in his
twenties, looking like the job is killing him inside.

                       ALEX
Bottle of vodka.

                       CLERK
      (Uneasy)
UhÖ what size?

                       ALEX
Large.

                       CLERK
Well, we have a large range of
vodkas here, which one do you
want?

46.

                       ALEX
I donít care.

                       CLERK
WellÖ itís just that-

                       ALEX
      (Interrupts, but
       not viciously)
Just fucking pick something.

                       CLERK
      (Growing nervous)
I canítÖ

                       ALEX
      (Still not vicious)
What the fuck do you mean you
canít?

                       CLERK
I canít choose for youÖ

                       ALEX
      (Curtly, but
       quietly)
Are you a human or what?

                       CLERK
UmmÖ

                       ALEX
Listen to me, punk, you are not a
servant, you are a person. You
need to think for yourself a
little.

                       CLERK
Smirnoff?

                       ALEX
You arenít listening, are you?
Donít ever be tied down by any
authority. I am a human. You are a
human. We should communicate like
two humans, not like robots. Iím
sure you have the ability to
decide for yourself, so pick me
out a vodka.

47.

The clerk takes one last nervous look at Alex, turns around
and picks out a cheap looking bottle and places it on the
counter. He looks slowly up at Alex who has his eyebrows
raised at the bottle.

                       ALEX
      (Little change of
       expression or
       emotion)
Why did you pick this bottle?

                       CLERK
Well, I thought that if you didnít
care, you probably just wanted to
get hammeredÖ

                       ALEX
      (Slowly raises a
       smile)
Youíre an intelligent kid. With a
little more confidence you could
do well in this world. Even change
a few lives, maybe for the better.

                       CLERK
      (Stammering)
UhÖ th-thankyou s-sir.

Alex swigs the entire bottle, places it firmly on the
counter, flings a load of cash, winks at the clerk and
twitches, leaving him looking baffled and astonished by the
whole experience.

INT. POLICE STATION - DAY

We rejoin Will and Ted at the station, Will is looking ready
to leave, putting on his jacket etc.

                       TED
Well, just five minutes after I
told you to take it easy, you
manage to arrest someone.

                       WILL
Just call me super cop.

                       TED
      (Dipping his head
       slightly and
       shaking it)
Super cop needs to learn how to
stop.

48.

                       WILL
Iíll go home now, I just really
had to arrest that piece of shit.

                       TED
Well, the chief is on the war-path
now. Apparently the guy thought
his human rights were violated.
And heís very powerful.

The chief interrupts the conversation by storming through
the halls up to Will and facing him. It is at this point
that it is shown to the audience that the chief is
considerably shorter than Will. Will and Ted both roll their
eyes and look away from the direction from which the chief
is coming.

                       CHIEF
      (Yelling)
ANDERSON!!!

                       WILL
      (Calmly, but with
       a slight hint of
       nervousness)
Chief.

                       CHIEF
WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE
DOING?

                       WILL
Not much other than standing here
being yelled at.

                       CHIEF
ANY MORE OF YOUR FUCKING CHEEK,
      (At this point,
       Will's face jerks
       as if he is about
       to say something
       but decides
       against it)
AND I PROMISE YOU, YOU WILL BE
SPENDING THE REST OF YOUR LIFE
CLEANING UP AFTER DOGS SHITTING ON
THE SIDEWALK!

                       WILL
      (As politely as
       possible)
Whatís the matter?

49.

                       CHIEF
Do you really think it sets a good
example to the criminal mind to
use language so foul as that which
a Mr Andrew Thompson claims that
you used?

                       WILL
Shit, are you talking about that
shitty driver?

                       CHIEF
Iím talking about your week long
suspension, effective immediately.
Do you realise that you had
fractured his arm?

                       WILL
He attempted to assault me, I
defended myself.

                       CHIEF
He said that you had already had
him in a position from which he
could not escape.

                       WILL
And you believe a criminal over a
cop?

                       ALEX
      (Flinches)
Mr Thompson is a respectable
businessman, and you have not been
one of my favourite people. And
considering your attitude towards
me, I donít want to be
particularly lenient towards you.

                       ALEX
      (Restraining
       himself)
Yes, sir.

Will pushes past the chief and leaves the station, with
fists clenched at the side.

EXT. PARK - DAY

We join Alex outside the liquor store, and just about to
enter a small, fairly tranquil park, the camera following
him. He walks happily into it, and after a few seconds falls

50.

straight on to the floor, the camera stays in the same
place. A phone rings, and Alex's voice is heard, and Will's
is heard coming through the receiver.

                       ALEX (Off Camera)
BlyeahÖ

                       WILL (On Phone)
Dude, whatís happening?

                       ALEX (On Phone)
Thereís aÖ very heavyÖ

                       WILL (On Phone)
What the hell? Have you been at
the fucking bottle already?

                       ALEX (On Phone)
I can look after myflelf, I just
need some waterÖ

                       WILL (On Phone)
You have, havenít you?

                       ALEX (On Phone)
HEEEYYYY! Will, I havenít asked
how your fucking cat is recently.

                       WILL (On Phone)
Alex, where the hell are you?

                       ALEX (On Phone)
My gun is on my shoe.

                       WILL (On Phone)
Iím coming to pick you up.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
OOOPS! Now itís not.

                       WILL (On Phone)
Shit, man, where are you?

                       ALEX (On Phone)
Iím not going home. Iím fine. I
donít even have a fucking car on
me.

Alex gets up and then falls back over again in the opposite
direction, the camera stays where it is.

51.

                       WILL (On Phone)
So you think you can find your way
home, huh?

                       ALEX (On Phone)
I can do anything I just so wish
to take upon myself to start doing
that I may consider beginning to
do if that is what I feel like-

                       WILL (On Phone)
      (Patiently, but
       nevertheless
       interrupting)
Look, shut up for a second.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
      (Continuing his
       ramble)
ÖAnd Iíd be there with a hammerÖ

                       WILL (On Phone)
SHUT UP!

                       ALEX (On Phone)
HELLO?

                       WILL (On Phone)
What?

                       ALEX (On Phone)
What the hell is going on?

                       WILL (On Phone)
I'm on the phone to you, you
fucking idiot.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
Everything just went fucking loud
for a second there. Shit.

                       WILL (On Phone)
Thatís because we were shouting.
Where the hell are you?

                       ALEX (On Phone)
ON THE GROUND!

                       WILL (On Phone)
      (Close to tears of
       frustration)
WhatÖ motherfuckingÖ groundÖ

52.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
Whadreyou talking about? Thereís
only one fucking ground, and Iím
on it.

                       WILL (On Phone)
So where have you been recently?

                       ALEX (On Phone)
Liquor store.

                       WILL (On Phone)
Yeah, I guessed that, which one?

                       ALEX (On Phone)
Harryís.

                       WILL (On Phone)
Was Harry there?

                       ALEX (On Phone)
Some punk kid.

                       WILL (On Phone)
So where are you now?

                       ALEX (On Phone)
Park, I already fucking told you.

                       WILL (On Phone)
No you didnít.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
Really? Sorry.

                       WILL (On Phone)
Look, Iím coming to pick you up.
Just stay there.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
I canít really move.

                       WILL (On Phone)
Good.

The screen blacks out slowly.

EXT. OUTSIDE THE POLICE STATION - DAY

The camera is now focused on Ted who is leaving the station,
walking slowly towards his car looking tired. He gets in and
pulls out of the station car-park and drives off. Eventually

53.

he gets to a small vacant street and stops in front of a red
light. He takes his hands off the wheel and places his face
in them. Suddenly, a Cadillac comes veering in from the
front of the car and skids to a halt in front of him. He
starts to reverse, but another Cadillac comes and hits his
car from behind, sending him into the windshield. As he
lifts his head, which is bleeding profusely, he is grabbed
roughly by the collar of his jacket and dragged out of the
car; the owner of the hands that grabbed him are not seen.
He is then bundled into the back of one of the Cadillacs,
which then spins around and is followed by the other.

INT. COURTHOUSE - DAY

The courthouse is a large wooden-looking place with large
windows that let huge amounts of sunlight pour in, making
Judith, who is cross examining a doctor, look faint and
ghostly.

                       JUDITH
So you say that she came in to
your office with a film canister
containing saliva, and a film
canister containing semen that
when you tested it, matched
exactly with Mr Clements' DNA?

                       DOCTOR
Yes she did.

                       JUDITH
But you had no proof that it was
ever on her body.

                       DOCTOR
No.

                       JUDITH
And when she had told you she had
been raped, you wanted to examine
her for bruises.

                       DOCTOR
Yes, there were rather severe
marks about her face.

                       JUDITH
On the side?-

A phone rings, Judithís, and Judith pulls a face of utter
annoyance

54.

                       JUDITH
      (To Judge)
Can I take this?

The judge waves his hand in an uncommitted gesture of
permission.

                       JUDITH
      (Smiling)
Thanks.

She walks briskly out of the courtroom and answers very
angrily.

                       JUDITH (On Phone)
What?

                       VOICE (On Phone)
      (Nerdish and
       uncommitted)
Uhh, yeah, uhh, is this Judith
Carson?

                       JUDITH (On Phone)
Yes it is, how can I help you?

                       VOICE (On Phone)
Uhh, I got this, uhh, note saying
that I had to ring you to say
that, uhh, your husband has been
given a few daysÖ to, uhhÖ
      (unsure)
take a breather because Ricardo
has been released?

                       JUDITH (On Phone)
What? Alex? Alex Carson?

                       VOICE (On Phone)
UhhÖ yeah, Alex Carson.

                       JUDITH (On Phone)
Ricardoís been released?

                       VOICE (On Phone)
ThatísÖ what it saysÖ

                       JUDITH (On Phone)
Where did Alex go? Do you know
where he went?

                       VOICE (On Phone)
Beats me.

55.

                       JUDITH (On Phone)
Shit!

                       VOICE (On Phone)
What's the problem?

                       JUDITH (On Phone)
My husband always gets in a lot of
trouble in these breathers. Oh,
shit.

                       VOICE (On Phone)
UhhÖ thereÖthere?

                       JUDITH (On Phone)
SHIT! SHIT! SHIT! SHIT!

                       VOICE (On Phone)
So whatís the deal with this
Ricardo guy?

                       JUDITH (On Phone)
Oh, fuck. Shit. No way. Fucking
shit.

                       VOICE (On Phone)
Do I have to stay on the line?

                       JUDITH (On Phone)
      (Angrily pauses,
       but shakes her
       head quickly)
NoÖ no, fuck off.

                       VOICE (On Phone)
Bye, Miss.

Judith ends the call and speedily dials a number, Willís.
Will is in the car driving to pick Alex up.

                       JUDITH (On Phone)
Will, have you been with Alex
today?

                       WILL (On Phone)
Judith?

                       JUDITH (On Phone)
Yeah, have-

                       WILL (On Phone)
      (Interrupting)
Iím just going to pick him up.

56.

                       JUDITH (On Phone)
      (Hesitantly)
ÖFrom what?

                       WILL (On Phone)
Park. I managed to find out Ė
after considerable questioning Ė
that he went to the liquor store.

                       JUDITH (On Phone)
Oh, no.

                       WILL (On Phone)
Yeah, I know.
      (Small ironic
       chuckle)
I donít think heís moving, though.

                       JUDITH (On Phone)
Ring me if everything turns out
ok, wonít you?

                       WILL (On Phone)
Yeah, sure. Anything for you.

                       JUDITH (On Phone)
      (Breathing a sigh
       of incomplete
       relief)
Thanks. Iíll come home as soon as
Iíve finished here at the court.

                       WILL (On Phone)
Oh yeah. how are you holding up
with that?

                       JUDITH (On Phone)
Oh, I donít know, Iíve got this
guy whoís been accused of raping-

                       WILL (On Phone)
      (Interrupting
       disgustedly)
Yeah, yeah I heard.

                       JUDITH (On Phone)
      (As if sheís not
       sure)
Well, heís innocent. Definitely
innocent. But I donít think I can
keep him in front of bars.

57.

                       WILL (On Phone)
Don't say that. You're a fucking
great lawyer, and if you think
he's innocent, you can free him.
You have to remember that people
abuse the law system in America,
and you are the only chance of
stopping them from succeeding in
their fucked up aims.

                       JUDITH (On Phone)
Wow. You know what, you are right,
I need to defend this man, and I'm
sure as hell not gonna let him go
down quietly.

                       WILL (On Phone)
Atta girl. I know you can do this.

                       JUDITH (On Phone)
Thanks. Youíve always believed in
me.

                       WILL (On Phone)
Hey, whatís a brother for?

                       JUDITH (On Phone)
      (Suddenly confused)
What? Brother?

                       WILL (On Phone)
      (Laughing inside)
You do know Iím black, donít you?

                       JUDITH (On Phone)
OhÖ yesÖ brotherÖ sorry, I justÖ

                       WILL (On Phone)
      (Still laughing)
Itís fine. Youíre under stress.
Just when you get back in that
courtroom, fight your ass off.
Donít stop for whatever reason.

                       JUDITH (On Phone)
Even a fire?

                       WILL
Fire couldn't stop you.

                       JUDITH (On Phone)
      (Giggles slightly)
Ok, Iíll try. Thanks.

58.

                       WILL (On Phone)
Take care.

                       JUDITH (On Phone)
      (Much happier)
Bye.

Judith puts the phone down.

WILL'S CAR

Will has put the phone down and after a few seconds, pulls
over and gets out. He walks to the park where Alex is
wandering aimlessly about, near about the same point, and
approaches him

                       WILL
      (Kindly and softly)
Alex. Come on. We gotta get you
out of here.

                       ALEX
Why? I can take them.

                       WILL
Saying things like that is exactly
why. Come on, Iíll take you home.

                       ALEX
Hey, Will, whatís happening?

                       WILL
Youíre wasted. Iím taking you
home.

                       ALEX
Hey, Will, get yourself something

Alex hands a random scrumple of notes to Will

                       ALEX
and join me.

                       WILL
Yeah, I will,
      (pushes Alexís
       hand back)
I just gotta go home and sort some
stuff out.

                       ALEX
      (Offers money
       again)
Come on, man, itíll be like old
            (MORE)

59.

                       ALEX (cont'd)
times.

                       WILL
      (Patiently and
       slowly)
Yeah, I will. I just gotta go home
and sort some stuff out.

                       ALEX
Oh yeah, I see.

The two of them begin to walk out of the park, but after a
dozen or so steps, Alex stops where he is standing and makes
an inquisitive face at Will. Will carries on a few steps,
realises that Alex has stopped and turns around.

                       WILL
Whatís up, bro?

                       ALEX
You donít look so good. Whatís
happening?

                       WILL
Nothing.

                       ALEX
Itís not nothing.

                       WILL
Its nothing for now.

                       ALEX
Chief?

                       WILL
Got it in one. Fucking guy hates
me.

                       ALEX
He hates me too. You knew that.
Why are you worried about that?

                       WILL
Itís not that Iím bothered about.
He suspended me.

                       ALEX
WHAT? What the fuck for?

60.

                       WILL
You know that guy who was parking
in a no-parking zone that I
arrested just after I was talking
to you?

                       ALEX
      (A pause in which
       Alex furrows his
       brows in an
       attempt to
       understand the
       question and then
       remember what the
       hell happened
       today. After a
       while, his head
       snaps straight in
       realisation)
Yeah.

                       WILL
His nameís Andrew Thompson,
      (sarcastically)
heís an important businessman.

                       ALEX
You get him?

                       WILL
Yep. A little too much,
apparently. He tried to punch me,
I apparently broke his arm; same
old, same old.

At this point Alex starts walking again, and they continue
their twenty yard voyage to Willís car.

                       ALEX
And he suspended you?

                       WILL
Yes.

                       ALEX
I donít know how that fucking
cock-sucker hasnít managed to get
himself beaten to death. So what
did you say to him?

                       WILL
Shit, bro. I said nothing.

61.

                       ALEX
You really gotta learn to stand up
to him. Heís a shit, and he knows
it. But he thinks he can get away
with anything with you.

They arrive at the car and get in

                       ALEX
Seriously man, stand up to him.

                       WILL
I know, I KNOW! Itís just that he
never listens, what the hell am I
supposed to do?

                       ALEX
Shout him down all the time, even
if itís for nothing. Maybe even
punch him a few times.

                       WILL
      (Chuckles slightly)
Iíll wait, I donít think it would
be wise to do anything now Iím
effectively a temporary citizen.
But when we both get back, weíll
get straight down to that
warehouse.

                       ALEX
Why, what do you need?

                       WILL
No, Ricardoís warehouse.

                       ALEX
      (Through the teeth)
And fucking kill him?

                       WILL
Weíll see how things pan out.

They both smile Ďevil contemplatingí grins, and the screen
blacks out.

EXT. OUTSIDE ALEX'S APARTMENT - DAY

The car pulls up outside an expensive looking block of
apartments Ė Alexís Ė and the two of them get out. They get
to the door and Alex fumbles with the key card for a while
before they gain entrance.

62.

INSIDE

They get in a lift

                       ALEX
Are you sure you wonít join me?

                       WILL
Like I said, man, I gotta go home
and take care of some shit. Iíll
be over in about an hour.

                       ALEX
What is it you gotta do?

                       WILL
Admin, mainly. Writing up a report
about that shit that tried it with
the law and won.

                       ALEX
Why donít you organise yourself
some heat for the raid?

                       WILL
No, thatíll take too long, I just
canít be assed.

                       ALEX
Fair enough.

                       WILL
Oh yeah, when Judith comes home,
give her a bit of attention, she
really needs it.

                       ALEX
Why?

                       WILL
I spoke to her on the phone about
an hour ago, sheís had a hard day
in the court.

                       ALEX
Really? I thought she was
incapable of finding a challengeÖ

                       WILL
Not usually, sheís usually got
full conviction of her clientís
innocence.

63.

                       ALEX
But she seemed so sureÖ

                       WILL
Sheís having doubts. I donít know
why. Maybe some vibes sheís
getting off the guy or something.

                       ALEX
What, pervert waves?

                       WILL
      (Laughs)
Yeah, maybe, anyway, be sure to
treat her good.

                       ALEX
That can be assured.

                       WILL
Yeah, well she wonít be home for a
good few hours, Iíll leave when I
need to.

The lift opens and the two start walking down the corridor.
They arrive at Alexís door once Will stops speaking

                       WILL
See you in an hour.

                       ALEX
Yeah, man.

                       WILL
Youíll be ok?

                       ALEX
Yeah, Iím cool.

                       WILL
Right, Iím off.

Alex walks into his apartment and walks into a smaller room,
not a bedroom and collapses by the wall and falls asleep.

OUTSIDE

Will gets back into his car and drives off.

64.

INT. COURTHOUSE - DAY

The prosecutor is cross examining the Ďvictimí, Mindy
Summers, in an obsequious manner. Mr Clements, the
defendant, is sitting next to Judith.

                       PROSECUTOR
So, Mindy, after school you were
called back because your homework
assignment was not satisfactory?
That was the reason Mr Clements
gave you?

                       MINDY
      (Casts an evil
       glare to Mr
       Clements)
Yeah, but I spent ages on that
assignment, I knew he wasnít
right.

                       PROSECUTOR
When you say he wasnít right, do
you mean he was having a bad day?

                       MINDY
No, ever since he told us about
the divorce with his wife, heís
been lookiní at me like he fancied
me. Been staring at my chest in
all his lessons.

                       PROSECUTOR
So you were wary of him when you
were called back by him?

                       MINDY
      (Starting to go
       red in the face)
Yeah, I didnít wanna listen to a
word he said, I just nodded along
and kept myself close to the door.

                       PROSECUTOR
So you think you could have had an
easy escape?

                       MINDY
No, he stepped in front of the
door, just before he asked me to
sit down on the table.

65.

At this point Mr Clements flinches and clenches his hand
into a fist, so that only Judith can see.

                       PROSECUTOR
What did you think he wanted?

                       MINDY
      (Tears welling up)
He wanted to fuck me, I could see
it in his eyes; he kept looking
downÖ atÖ meÖ thereÖ

                       PROSECUTOR
And what did he do next?

Mr Clementsí breathing becomes heavier, and he starts
sweating. Judith glances at him and swallows.

                       MINDY
He told me not to screamÖ

                       PROSECUTOR
Yes?

                       MINDY
      (Amid sobs)
He pulled myÖ skirtÖ andÖ
underwearÖ off, and unzipped hisÖ
pantsÖ and then heÖ

                       PROSECUTOR
He what?

                       MINDY
FUCKED ME! COULDNíT YOU GET IT? HE
FUCKED ME!
      (Dissolves in
       tears)

                       PROSECUTOR
      (To jury)
I think you can see, this is a
girl clearly under distress.

The judge rolls his eyes.

                       MR CLEMENTS
      (Stands up)
YOU LYING BITCH! IíLL FUCKING KILL
YOU!

66.

                       JUDGE
MR CLEMENTS, PLEASE! IF YOU OBJECT
YOU MAY DO SO IN THE PROPER
FASHION.

Mr Clements hesitates and reluctantly sits down, Judith
stands up.

                       JUDITH
Can I move for a recess?

                       JUDGE
      (Looking slightly
       resentful towards
       Judith)
Yes. Whatever. Court returns in
fifteen minutes.

INT. SMALL OFFICE IN COURTHOUSE - DAY

Judith and Mr Clements are sitting down and discussing in a
very serious manner. The office is more of a converted
bathroom or janitor's closet than one designed for a
lawyer's use. There is very little light coming in through
the tiny, high windows, the walls are pale green and the old
fashioned and fairly out of placed furniture comprises two
poor condition red leather chairs and one chunky, scratched
and beaten desk.

                       JUDITH
I want you to tell me truthfully
whether or not you raped Mindy
Summers.

                       MR CLEMENTS
No. I hate the bitch.

                       JUDITH
Then why have you refused to tell
me what happened on that day?

                       MR CLEMENTS
      (Hesitates)
ItÖ it was embarrassing. And I
donít think it would help my case
at all.

                       JUDITH
If you still refuse to tell me
what happened, Iím afraid thereís
bullshit I can do to help you.

67.

Judith moves as if to stand up to leave

                       MR CLEMENTS
ALRIGHT!

Judith sits down.

                       MR CLEMENTS
You know sheís a drama student,
well sheís very good. She can cry
on cue. Youíve fucking seen it.
Sheís a brilliant actress.

                       JUDITH
Get to the fucking point.

                       MR CLEMENTS
Well, I would like to tell you
now, Iíve always hated the bitch.
Fucking wanted to tear every
little pampered hair on her spoilt
little fucking head out.

                       JUDITH
Mr Clements-

                       MR CLEMENTS
      (Interrupts)
No, you have to know this. I
always tried to keep a
professional attitude with her,
but she kept fucking everything up
all the time. Constantly
humiliating me in front of the
class.

                       JUDITH
Why did she want to humiliate you
in front of the class?

                       MR CLEMENTS
      (Unsurely)
Beats meÖ

                       JUDITH
I need to know the whole truth.
Whatever you tell me that may
endanger the case will not leave
this room.

68.

                       MR CLEMENTS
Fine. I really wanted to go out
with her mother. Really hot, she
was. Kind of looked like you.

Judith flinches with the innappropriate comment.

                       MR CLEMENTS
Anyway, after I called her mother
to a parent-teacher conference, we
got to talking, and she ended up
taking me back to her place, and
within a few minutes we were
fucking like rabbitsÖ

FLASHBACK - MINDY'S HOUSE

Mr Clements and an attractive middle aged woman are rolling
around naked on a bed in the near dark with the rain pouring
onto the window, they are not making much noise. The room is
fairly upper class; french windows and a canopy bed but with
a faint girlish touch around the room.

                       MR CLEMENTS (VO)
And then, she came in,
      (with hate)
Mindy.

Mindy walks in with her friend and stifles a scream.

                       MR CLEMENTS (VO)
I had to finish, I was just that
close, and I suppose thatís what
pissed her off the most.

Mr Clements lets out a low moan, and Mindy screams in anger,
not shock, her mother does nothing except whimper a little,
sexually.

                       MR CLEMENTS (VO)
So, anyway, I had started thinking
of doing a production in college.

FLASHBACK - COLLEGE

Mr Clements is in his class - a large drama studio with an
arc of chairs facing one centre chair, the walls are covered
entirely with black curtains - with everyone milling out,
Mindy is at the back, wearing typically seductive items of
clothing - a halter top, a miniskirt, fishtights and fuck-me
boots.

69.

                       MR CLEMENTS (VO)
In order to maintain a
professional attitude, I decided
to discuss it with her. Even
though I hated her - and I still
do, donít forget - I thought she
would like to be the lead role in
it. So I called her back to talk
about it. She had handed in that
assignment she talked about a few
days back, which was brilliant,
but that was not the reason that I
wanted to talk to her. Anyway, I
talked to her for a bit about it,
and she just stood up.

The events happen just as Mr Clements describes them

                       MR CLEMENTS (VO)
      (Starts breathing
       heavily and
       sounding excited)
And sat on my legs, facing me,
like in some sort of porno, or
something. She ripped her shirt
open, pulled her skirt up, and
said-

                       MINDY
Do you want to fuck me, just like
you fucked my mum? Hmm? Want to go
for a younger, cuter model? I've
never had a ride before, so why
don't you put the key in the
ignition?

                       MR CLEMENTS (VO)
At first, my thoughts were to get
out of there, but then I looked at
her, and she was practically
naked, her clothes were just
hanging off her, and I wanted to
fuck her.

                       JUDITH (VO)
And so youÖ

                       MR CLEMENTS (VO)
I took my pants off and fucked
her. Really hard, though; I just
wanted to almost hurt her, but she
was really good. She starting
screaming, not like for help, but
for more, just for me to keep
            (MORE)

                       MR CLEMENTS (cont'd)
going harder and harder, and then,
she did the weirdest thing. She
started slapping herself. I just
thought she was doing it for the
hell of it, so I carried on, but I
did try to tell her to stop
screaming.

BACK TO OFFICE

                       JUDITH
      (Looking horrified)
Did youÖ at any pointÖ startÖ
sucking her breasts?

FLASHBACK - COLLEGE

Mr Clements is burying his head into Mindyís breasts, and
she is rolling her head back in pleasure

BACK IN OFFICE

                       MR CLEMENTS
      (Staring straight
       forward)
Yes. Yes I did.

                       JUDITH
And youÖ
      (winces)
finished?

FLASHBACK - COLLEGE

Mr Clements is moaning, though silently, and thrusting
slower. Mindy is biting her lower lip with an evil smile.

BACK IN OFFICE

                       MR CLEMENTS
Yes. I did.

                       JUDITH
So what happened next?

FLASHBACK - COLLEGE

The events happen just as Mr Clements describes them

71.

                       MR CLEMENTS (VO)
She, just got up, put her clothes
back as if we had just had some
regular meeting and said...

                       MINDY
See you tomorrow
      (leans in to Mr
       Clements ear and
       whispers)
Mr Clements.

                       JUDITH
Well, though I think you're quiteÖ
shameless, you've done nothing to
break the law, and I'm going to
defend you so that that bitch will
be put in your position for
abusing the law for her own
purposes.

                       MR CLEMENTS
      (Smiling a
       relieved smile)
Thank you.

                       JUDITH
Although, you will have to be
prepared to say everything you
just said to me in court.

Mr Clements bites his lip nervously, glances around, as
though thinking, and nods timidly.

INT. WILL'S APARTMENT - DAY

Will is entering his own apartment, a sunny, vibrant little
inner suburban box, looking wearisome. He opens the door as
he is pulling his cell phone out of his coat pocket to find
a ring of nine smartly dressed men, Ricardo's gang,
standing, holding guns to greet him. Will reaches for his
gun, but the gangsters all aim at him in unison, and in
warning. One of the gangsters, steps forward, puts his gun
down and speaks.

                       GANGSTER ONE
      (Intimidating)
Mr Anderson! How good it is to
meet you at last. I've never had a
chance to have a proper talk with
you, what with your buddy
constantly trying to kill my boss.

72.

                       WILL
What the fuck do you want?

                       GANGSTER ONE
Only to talk things over. You see,
I'm sure you're aware that your
friend Alex Carson has a thing
that he has to see to it that our
friend Ricardo's time here in LA
is miserable, and I was wondering
if you could help us.

                       WILL
Why should I help you?

                       GANGSTER ONE
Oh, itís no trouble on your part.
If youíd just like to come with
me.

                       WILL
No I wouldn't like to, you're not
exactly subtle. I can
      (Split second
       pause, raises
       eyebrows)
take a guess at what you're trying
to pull.

                       GANGSTER ONE
Are you saying that weíre stupid?

                       WILL
You gotta be stupid to break into
a copís apartment.

One of the gangsters lowers his gun to be pointing at Will's
leg, which Will sees, and so he jumps backwards out of the
doorway, dropping the phone. He starts to run down the
corridor, with bullets bursting through the walls, and after
a while, the gangsters start trying to follow him. He bursts
into the apartment at the end of the corridor, shoots the
window and dives through it.

73.

OUTSIDE

It is only a ground floor window, so he rolls on the grass
outside and gets up, and starts running to his car. A few
bullets coming from behind him hit the tyres on his car,
forcing him to run. He crosses the street, which is fairly
busy, bonnet sliding as he goes, and dives into a very
narrow alley on the other side. He peers round the corner
and starts firing a few rounds, and hits one of the
pursuers. After realising that it wouldn't be long before
the gangsters caught up with him, he jumps, planting a foot
onto one wall, launching off that to the opposite one, grabs
onto a rail/beam aboce him and lifts himself onto the roof.
He starts running and hides behind a large vent, and
breathes heavily. A few bullets screaming against the top of
the vent tell him to carry on moving, he turns and shoots a
pursuer off the roof, falling back into the alley. He
starts running atop the roof, and jumps over the small gaps,
and pulls himself over a few obstacles. He runs through a
few upright barrels and hides behind a wall a few yards
away. When a couple of pursuers reach it, he shoots at them,
hitting one of the barrels, which are full of paraffin, and
they explode, killing two more pursuers; the other five jump
through the resulting fire and carry on chasing Will.

MARKET

Will gets to a point at which he jumps down off the roof,
which is low, onto a car and runs along a busy, vibrant
market street, many stalls selling questionable substances
and others selling the pariphernalia for them. Will is
constantly bumping into people and occasionally turning and
firing behind him. This, at one point hits one of the
gangsters in the arm, forcing him to drop his gun. After a
while, the gangsters split, with one still following him,
and the others going around on another route. At this time,
the gangster following fires a shot, which hits a mother
with two small children square in the head, and Will stops
for a second out of shock to look at her, but decides
against helping her, as the gangster is still pursuing him.

74.

BASKETBALL COURTS

Will runs into a small alley which opens up into a series of
basketball courts, and two more gangsters approach him from
the sides, forcing him to run through into the courts.
Another gangster comes from the front, and eventually he is
surrounded by the five remaining gangsters. He jumps towards
one of the four with guns and disarms him with a kick,
sending his gun far away, while shooting one of the other
gangsters in the head. He grabs the disarmed gangster and
uses him as a projectile which forces one of the others with
a gun to drop it, and aims his gun at the last one with the
gun. All four living gangsters are now frozen in their
positions, the gangster with the gun is the one that greeted
Will upon coming home.

                       WILL
Throw the gun.

                       GANGSTER ONE
      (Nervous)
I donít think youíre in a position
to tell me what to do.

                       WILL
Weíll do this mano e mano. No
guns.

                       GANGSTER ONE
How can we trust you?

                       WILL
Iím trustworthy by nature. Iím a
cop.

                       GANGSTER ONE
But youíre running for your life
and outnumbered. I canít trust
you.

                       WILL
Youíre going to have to.

                       GANGSTER ONE
      (Growing more
       nervous)
Shut the fuck up. No way. Ainít
happening.

                       WILL
Well, weíre just going to have to
stay like this until someone sees
us, calls the police, and you get
arrested. I think itís brilliant
            (MORE)

75.

                       WILL (cont'd)
show from me that I trust you to
not cheat. So, letís see, do you
have any honour?

                       GANGSTER ONE
Sure. After three.

                       WILL
OneÖ twoÖ threeÖ CHUCK!

The two of them throw the guns wildly to the side, and the
four gangsters leap in to Will, who then fights them off, in
a professional and cool way. After some time, Will kicks one
of the gangsters in the face, sending him into the fence,
and knocking him unconscious. At this point, one of the
gangsters whips out a small pistol, that he was hiding on an
ankle strap, and shoots Will in the foot with it. Will
falls, but gets up quickly, and breaks the neck of one of
the gangsters, disarms the one who just shot at him by using
the one with a broken neck as a shield, kills the other with
that gun, and chokes the last remaining gangster Ė the one
who shot him. He then stumbles around in dizzy pain, he
shoots the gangster against the fence through the head, and
falls over and becomes unconscious.

INT. ALEX'S APARTMENT - DAY

Alex wakes up, and screams a hangover scream, after that, he
remains perfectly still in a trance, he does nothing but
stare directly ahead with his mouth open. Judith enters in
the opposite room and sits on the bed, with her friend,
Sandrine Ė a very attractive young woman in smart dress -
neither of whom are aware that Alex is in the opposite room.

                       JUDITH
      (Very upset)
Will hasnít phoned me, and he
always keeps to his word.

                       SANDRINE
Look, Alex is a cop, Iím sure he
look after himself.

                       JUDITH
But heís drunk, and the one man
who would go out of his way to
kill him is now back on the
streets.

76.

                       SANDRINE
Hey, hey. Iím sure that Will is
competent. Heís always managed to
keep himself out of trouble.

                       JUDITH
Hey, maybe you're right. Maybe
they just went out for a drink.
Maybe Will hasn't called because
he hasn't come here yet.

                       SANDRINE
Yeah, youíre just worrying because
youíre having a stressful time at
work.

                       JUDITH
Tsch, yeah, tell me about it.
      (Small pause)
Oh, I'm sorry, I'm just talking
about myself.

                       SANDRINE
      (Moving closer to
       Judith)
Oh, no, I like to listen. You need
a friendly ear at this time in
your life.

                       JUDITH
      (Slightly crying)
Thank you, Sandrine. Itís just
that this guyÖ I meanÖ he treats
women like they are just stress
relief toys. Just constantly
fuckingÖ and fuckingÖ And Iím
supposed to defend him.

                       SANDRINE
      (Soothingly)
I know, I know.

                       JUDITH
He's just the biggest bastard
ever, and he's done more wrong
than half of all convicts. It's
just not against the law. And I'm
stopping him from getting his
comeuppanceÖ
      (Cries on
       Sandrine's
       shoulder)

77.

                       SANDRINE
You're doing what you can...

                       JUDITH
      (In between sobs)
ButÖ I canít letÖ the little
bitchÖ win.

                       SANDRINE
You just need to relax a bit,
      (slowly)
to think it over.

She gently lifts Judithís head up and lightly kisses her on
the lips for a second. They look into each otherís eyes and
move in slowly for another kiss. As this becomes more
passionate, Sandrine reaches up, unbuttons Judithís shirt
and pulls it slowly over her shoulder, which then is allowed
to fall completely off her. At this point the screen flashes
relatively quickly back to the image of Alex who is lying in
his trance against the wall, but this very soon returns to
the two women, who are now both topless. Sandrine takes hold
of Judithís trousers and pulls them softly down, with Judith
soon following suit on Sandrine. They then fall back on the
bed, become entirely nude, and improvise sexual intercourse,
the scene constantly being cut with images of Alex that
become more frequent as Sandrine and Judith become louder
until Alex snaps out of his trance. He stands up and exits
his room unsteadily, and enters the room that Judith and
Sandrine are in. They donít notice him until he starts
speaking.

                       ALEX
      (Drunkenly angry)
WHAT THE FUCK?

Judith and Sandrine snap up, looking sheepish, but also
mortified.

                       ALEX
MY WIFE? MY FUCKING WIFE? WHOíS
THIS BITCH?

                       JUDITH
      (Hesitantly)
ÖThis is SandrineÖ my friendÖ

                       ALEX
FRIEND! FRIEND? YOU COULDNíT
FUCKING WAIT ĎTILL I WAS HERE?

                       JUDITH
Sorry, itís just-

78.

                       ALEX
      (Interrupts)
AM I NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR YOU? AM I
SO BAD I PUT YOU OFF FUCKING MEN?

                       JUDITH
NoÖ I just got upsetÖ

                       ALEX
      (Seething)
You got upset. So now you look to
this cunt for comfort instead of
your ownÖ FUCKINGÖ HUSBAND!!!

                       JUDITH
You know I love youÖ

                       ALEX
Love me? Ok, prove you love me.

Alex takes out his gun, takes the safety off and hands it to
Judith.

                       ALEX
Kill this bitch.

                       JUDITH
      (In sickened shock)
How will this prove I love you?

                       ALEX
Break your bond with the woman who
tried to break our marriage.

                       JUDITH
Alex, I canít do thatÖ

                       ALEX
You have a bond with this woman,
don't you?

                       JUDITH
YesÖ weíre-

                       ALEX
      (Interrupts)
Youíre very good friends, arenít
you?

                       JUDITH
YesÖ but weÖ

79.

At this point, Sandrine looks quite frustrated with Alexís
attitude towards Judith.

                       ALEX
So you could sayÖ
      (whispers
       aggressively)
you love her.

                       SANDRINE
SHUT THE FUCK UP!

                       ALEX
      (His face jerks
       round to her)

                       SANDRINE
SO WHAT IF I LOVE HER? SHE'S A
SELF RELIANT WOMAN, AND SHE
DESERVES TO MAKE HER OWN FUCKING
CHOICES! YOU'RE JUST A
CHAUVENISTIC SHIT THAT WANTS TO
KEEP HIS WOMAN CONSTANTLY RIGHT
NEXT TO HIS FUCKING DICK, AREN'T
YOU?

                       ALEX
      (Looking furious,
       but at the same
       time amused)
Who the fuck are you to judge me?
You don't believe that my marriage
deserves to keep its sanctity? I
can not hope for you to have a
worse life, you fucking bitch.

Alex takes his gun from Judith leaves the apartment
furiously.

                       JUDITH
      (Calling
       desperately)
Alex! Please!

                       ALEX
      (Flicking his head
       round in the
       doorway)
What? What the fuck do you mean
please?
      (After a short
       pause)
Iím going for a walk.

80.

Alex leaves and closes the door quietly behind me, leaving
the soft sound of Judithís sobs.

EXT. BASKETBALL COURTS - DAY

Will is just about to regain consciousness on the basketball
courts; there are six teenage ballers who are standing over
Will.

                       BALLER 1
Oh, thank shit man, heís coming
round.

                       BALLER 2
Dude, are you ok?

                       WILL
      (Blinking blearily)
Oh, shit no.

We see Will's bloody, mangled foot.

                       BALLER 3
Hey, you are a cop arenít you?

                       WILL
YeahÖ my badge give me away?

                       BALLER 3
Yeah, homie.

                       BALLER 5
We just came and saw you stagger
around and collapse on the floor,
Negro.

                       BALLER 4
You killed all these guys right?

                       WILL
      (Coughs up a bit
       of blood)
Yeah.

                       BALLER 4
We thought that a nigger cop
surrounded by a bunch of dead
white fools was some sort of
motherfucking racist attack.

Will starts to get to his feet, three of the ballers help
him

81.

                       WILL
This isn't racism. This is just
vengeance.

                       BALLER 5
Whatís this shit all about then?

                       WILL
Revenge. They belong to a gang
that my best friend and me only
yesterday killed a large number
of.

                       BALLER 6
Ah, shit, we gotta meet this
nigger.

                       WILL
Actually, heís white.

                       BALLER 1
      (After a pause, in
       which the ballers
       look slightly
       uncomfortable)
Where you headed to, homie?

                       WILL
My apartment. Couple of blocks
that way

Will waves vaguely in a direction.

                       BALLER 3
Anything you need, man, weíll get
it.

                       BALLER 5
Seriously homie, weíll get you
anything, weíll kill any more of
them if try to touch you on our
block. Hey, youíve earned it.

                       WILL
Thanks, but you donít need to kill
anyone. Youíre good kids. Itíll be
a shame to see you end up like
these motherfuckers.
      (Nods to dead
       gangsters)

82.

                       BALLER 3
So whatís the deal with these
guys, anyway? What exactly
happened?

Flashback to the point at which the mother gets shot, in
slow motion, watching the blood fall out of her head.

BACK TO B BALL COURTS

                       WILL
      (Pause)
It's about something personal, but
it can never be kept personal.
It's inevitable that someone
innocent will die.

                       BALLER 3
What do you mean?

                       WILL
I pretty much killed her myself.
My job is to protect the public,
and I failed. Who knows what might
happen with her kids? But Iíve
seen so many people die, what the
fuck is she to me?

                       BALLER 4
Hey, donít blame yourself, man.

                       WILL
Thatís what Iíve been doing for so
long, but this time, I led the
bullets there. There was no
justice in what happened.

                       BALLER 4
Hey man, who pulled the trigger?

                       WILL
      (Shakes his head
       slowly)
Maybe you're right.

                       BALLER 6
      (Laughs dryly)
Thatís a first.

                       WILL
Whatís a first?

83.

                       BALLER 6
Grown-up telling us we're right.
Everyone always says their way
goes, and that's fucking final.

                       WILL
An adult is a fucking fool to
always consider himself right. You
kids learn that you are actually
yourself just as right as anyone
else.
      (Jerks head to the
       gangsters)
Someone's got to be wrong here.

                       BALLER 2
Yo, man, you've got it down. We've
never met anyone who tells us shit
that teaches us anything.

                       WILL
You havenít meant any humans then.
      (After a pause,
       his face
       brightens up
       slightly)
Hey, let me see your skills.

                       BALLER 2
      (Unsure)
What?

                       WILL
Come on. I wanna see you play. I
used to play back in high school
and college, I want to see if the
game's changed at all.

                       BALLER 5
Were you any good?

                       WILL
Hell yeah, I was good, I was the
best. I played point, I'd make all
the breaks, hell, I pretty much
made the dunk what it is. I do
love watching the game.
      (As they still
       look unsure)
Hey, I'm bleeding out my foot
here, you could at least do this
for me.

84.

                       BALLER 1
Alright then. Letís play.

Will is helped to the side of the court and sits down, the
others split into two teams and play with fairly gentle
hip-hop in the backgroud. After a few minutes, Will's face
falls and he becomes suddenly anxious.

                       WILL
OH SHIT!

                       BALLER 1
      (Drops the ball)
What is it, man?

                       WILL
      (Hurriedly and
       nervously)
My friends may be in real danger.
Shit, you gotta get me to my
apartment, quick.

                       BALLER 1
Aight, man, weíre on it.

The ballers pick Will up to his feet, and help him hobble as
quickly as possible away from the scene.

INT. ALEX'S APARTMENT - DAY

Judith and Sandrine are sitting on the bed, completely
dressed and in silence, the sun is setting in the window
behind them. Suddenly, the door bursts open, and the tied
up, wriggling body of Ted is thrown in, followed by a dozen
gangsters Ė Ricardo's gang and the 'cool' gang. They grab
Judith and Sandrine, and force them, struggling, to their
knees, bind and gag them. Ted is dragged along the floor,
bleeding out of his head and then is thrown down next to the
two women; Ricardo is silhouetted against the light in the
door, he takes his gun out and pulls back on the slide,
laughing dryly.

NEXT DOOR APARTMENT

The Carsonís neighbour hears the noise coming from next
door, pulls his gun out, and presses his ear against the
wall.

85.

ALEX'S APARTMENT

                       RICARDO
      (Picks up Judithís
       chin)
Well, well. Isnít this a pretty
bit of woman. Iíd imagine old Mr
Carson will not want to let you
go.
      (Addressing
       everyone in the
       room)
Now Iím sure youíve all heard of
the little fuck around Iíve had
with this bitchís husband,
      (points gun at
       Judith)
and Iím sure everyone here would
like to see an end to the whole
sticky situation.

A murmur of agreement from the gangsters, which Ricardo
acknowledges before bending down and ripping the tape off
Judithís face, who squeals a little.

                       RICARDO
Oh, donít complain. At least you
donít have to shave tomorrow
morning.

                       JUDITH
Whatever youíre planning to do,
you can fucking forget it. If you
donít run now, my husband will
kill all of you before you could
even scream.

                       RICARDO
Well, I donít think heís coming
back for a while. I think weíre
safe youíre your
one-man-army-husband.
      (Changes the
       subject by
       rolling his head
       slowly)
You know, I reckon we should get
to know each other a little
better,
      (moves his hand
       towards Judithís
       face to start
       stroking it)
maybe a little wine, who knows?

86.

                       RICARDO (cont'd)
So, what is your name?

                       JUDITH
      (Spits in
       Ricardo's face)

                       RICARDO
      (he replies
       sarcastically:)
Well, what a pretty name. Hello
      (spits in Judithís
       face)
my nameís
      (slaps Judith on
       the face. After a
       slight pause,
       becomes more
       aggressive.)
Now listen you little bitch, weíre
gonna do this by my rules, I ask
the questions, and you donít speak
until I want you to, and you donít
move until I ask you to;
      (holds his gun to
       her head)
so if that means I want you to get
butt naked and suck my dick, that
means you get butt naked, and you
suck my dick, got it?

                       JUDITH
      (Nods rapidly)

                       RICARDO
Now, Iíll ask you that question
you found so fucking difficult
last time again, and I think
youíll find that youíll find it
fuck-loads easier. So:
      (Slowly and
       deliberately)
What is your name, bitch?

                       JUDITH
      (Crying)
JuÖdithÖ

                       RICARDO
      (Still
       sarcastically)
Hey! Weíre making progress! Letís
see if you can get this next
question: Who is this pretty
            (MORE)

87.

                       RICARDO (cont'd)
little bitch-
      (rips tape off
       Sandrineís mouth,
       purely as an
       indication as to
       who he is talking
       about)
-you came with?

                       SANDRINE
      (Suddenly
       screaming)
YOU FUCKING DICK! KEEP YOUR
PERVERT FUCKING HANDS OFF HER! IF
YOU TRY IT WITH HER, I SWEAR TO
GOD IíLL KILL YOU! THIS WAS ALL
YOUR PLOT, WASNíT IT!

                       RICARDO
      (Turns his head
       slowly towards
       Sandrine, looking
       slightly put off
       and frowning at
       being interrupted)
You should shut up, bitch,
      (aims gun at her
       head, and starts
       to laugh in
       amusement over
       Sandrine)
or you might end up ironing my
shirts in manacles
      (leans in to her
       ear and whispers
       perversely)
and nothing else.

Ricardo slowly brings his tongue out of his mouth and licks
Sandrineís ear, sucks on it a little, and leans back, but
starts laughing again.

                       RICARDO
You know, there is so much wrong
with what you just said. I mean
it, fuck-loads wrong. You think
Iím gonna rape you, donít you?

Sandrine stares forward in an obvious reply in the
affirmative, Ricardo strokes her chin.

88.

                       RICARDO
Donít worry, little bitch, Iím
just here to torture you until her
husband deems it fit to give
himself up, I am not going to try
anything with either of you,
      (slight pause)
unless, of course,
      (takes another gun
       out of his jacket
       and places one
       gun on each of
       the womenís shirt
       collars and pulls
       their shirts down
       slightly)
you want me to. And you think
youíre gonna fucking kill me? You?
Kill me? Those jugs blocking the
passage of mental activity between
your brain and your mouth?

                       SANDRINE
      (Defiantly)
I would kill you. I love her.

                       RICARDO
So what?
      (Mockingly)
The power of love going to fucking
break the ropes around your wrists
and destroy all my buddies?
Please,
      (pulls up her
       sleeves)
with those arms, youíd be lucky to
get out of a fucking daisy chain.

                       SANDRINE
You fucking chauvinist.

                       RICARDO
      (Quick to respond
       and irritated)
Oh, shut the fuck up, bitch.

                       SANDRINE
You think that just because you
have a penis that you are better
than us-

89.

                       RICARDO
      (Interrupting,
       indignant, but
       not unsettled)
What did I fucking tell you about
before?

                       SANDRINE
You like having fucking power over
women-

                       RICARDO
      (Interrupts)
Oh, shit, Iím getting tired of
this

Ricardo takes his gun and shoots Sandrine across the breasts
Ė not a kill shot Ė and she screams once and keels over
whimpering.

NEXT DOOR APARTMENT

Alex's next door neighbour with the gun hears the shot and
runs to Alexís apartment to save the women, and kicks the
door open.

ALEX'S APARTMENT

                       NEIGHBOUR
      (Shouting)
Everyone fucking freeze-

The neighbour is interrupted by machine gun fire and falls
to his knees and then on his face without saying anything
more.

                       RICARDO
      (To Judith)
Oh, Judith, you know how you said
your husband would fucking kill us
all the minute he got here? Yeah,
thatís whatís going to fucking
happen.
      (To another
       gangster)
Drag him in will you? We donít
want anyone seeing him and having
a fucking panic attack.

EXT. ALEX'S CAR - DAY

Alex is in his car, and as a split screen, Will is just
being helped into his car by the Ballers. Alex staring
ahead, deep in thought, but face contorted in fury at the
same time. The sun is setting and the vibrant colours are
clear across the sky.

                       WILL
Thanks boys. Take care of
yourselves now, you hear?

                       BALLER 2
Yo, thanks for everything bro.

                       WILL
No problem.

Will accelerates away from the boys and drives erratically,
because of his foot and the popped tire, veering round
corners etc, whilst Alex keeps driving in the same way as he
originally was, after a while, the two screens become one
and both cars slide and skid to a halt in front of each
other. Will tries to get out, but stumbles because of his
foot, and Alex gets out of his car to help him, they go to
lean against Willís car.

                       ALEX
Shit, man, what the fuck happened
to you?

                       WILL
Shot. But shit to that, are you
cool?

                       ALEX
      (Long pause, Alex
       takes a long
       breath)
I'm not fucking cool.

                       WILL
Did they come to your apartment?

Alex Remains silent for a while, staring at the ground in
anger, during which time Will starts to frown in concern,
but then Alex shakes his head slightly.

                       ALEX
Who the fuck are you talking
about?

91.

                       WILL
What happened? Did they hurt
Judith? Is she ok?

                       ALEX
Sheís fine.
      (A pause in which
       Alex flinches
       with anger)
Sheís more than fucking fine.

                       WILL
      (Direct, serious)
Dude, whatís up?

                       ALEX
      (Shakes his head)
Iíll tell you when you tell me who
the fuck youíre talking about.

                       WILL
Dealers. At my apartment. Chased
me.

                       ALEX
      (Calm)
What dealers?

                       WILL
Those new bastards we saw with
Ricardo.

                       ALEX
      (Still calm)
They shoot you in the foot?

                       WILL
After a while.
      (Starts laughing)
They had to fucking get through a
few before they did. I killed all
nine of them.

                       ALEX
Thatís a pretty impressive number,
even for you.

                       WILL
Well, seeing that many people were
at my apartment, Iím surprised
that you didnít find any of those
bastards at your place.

92.

                       ALEX
      (Ironically)
Maybe itís my fucking day.

                       WILL
      (Changing the
       conversation
       after a pause, in
       which he looks
       concernedly at
       Alex)
Hey, come on, man, somethingís up.

                       ALEX
      (Looks at the
       ground and nods)
You read me like a fucking book.

                       WILL
Youíre not going to tell me about
it anytime soon, are you?

                       ALEX
      (Turns his head
       slowly to look at
       Will)
You read me like a fucking porno.

                       WILL
Oh yeah, and howís that?

                       ALEX
With total attention to detail.

He turns his head back to look at the floor and stares for a
couple of seconds before smirking. Will starts to laugh
quietly, and Alex joins in.

                       WILL
      (Becoming quite
       serious again)
So what do you want to do now?

                       ALEX
I wanna drive up to the hills and
fucking shoot something. But Iím
probably just going to go up there
and have a walk, for now.

                       WILL
      (Grins on one side
       of his mouth)
Have fun.

93.

Will opens car door and starts to get in.

                       ALEX
      (Looking into the
       sky but sounding
       concerned, in a
       calm way)
You cool with getting home?

                       WILL
No, Iím gonna head over to my
garage, and get this shit sorted
out
      (indicates to his
       shot tyre)
and then to the hospital, get this
shit sorted out
      (indicates to his
       foot)

                       ALEX
You can get there alone?

                       WILL
      (Nods thoughtfully)
I made it this far, didnít I?

Alex turns his head slowly towards Will and smiles as Will
closes the door and drives off. Alex walks to his car and
gets in. As he settles down, he looks slightly unnerved and
upset. He places his hand on the steering wheel and spins
the car into an acceptable driving condition on the road and
starts moving.

EXT. HOLLYWOOD HILLS - DAY

Alex is sitting on the bonnet of his car at a dusty
viewpoint on the edge of hill smoking a cigarette and
watching the sun set over the city. There is some gentle
kool n the gang style music coming from the radio of his
car. A cat from a nearby house creeps up to investigate him,
and Alex turns his head to look at him. The cat jumps up on
the bonnet next to him and sits down.

                       ALEX
      (Softly, to the
       cat)
I suppose I canít arrest you for
anything?
      (Pause)
No, probably not. Youíre from a
respectable neighbourhood, youíd
not even get so much as a
            (MORE)

jaywalking fine.

Alex looks at his collar, on which is written ĎTomí, and
then proceeds to start scratching him behind the ear.

                       ALEX
So youíre a man, huh? You got
yourself a girl?

                       TOM
      (Lets out a small
       short miaow)

                       ALEX
      (Laughing)
Yeah, of course you do. But I bet
you never found her doing another
girl. Yeah, thatís right, my
wifeís got some stupid feminist
bitch that sheíd rather have over
her own husband. Either that or
sheís become some fucking sex
psycho, and I donít want my wife
presenting herself to everyone in
the city. She certainly doesnít
know who I am anymore, only
yesterday she admitted that she
thinks Iím a psycho, but damn it
she doesnít know the shit load of
strain cops come under. Yeah, I
know, she has difficulties as a
lawyer, but I full well know itís
no where near the kind of shit I
have to do. I donít think she
realises that itís not always fun
to kill people.
      (laughs and pauses
       for a while in
       thought)
Maybe Iím a bit too hard on herÖ
Iíll try and talk to her when I
get back. She deserves it, and I
do love herÖ ShitÖ I donít even
know why Iím still a cop. So many
people have probably committed
some crime whilst Iíve been
sitting here. We never really win,
even if we do convict someone,
they just go to a care-house for a
few years, and a hundred more
people get away with whatever
theyíre doing. People do their
best to make an honest living,

inside of the law, and they get
fuck all to live on. Who are
making the real money? Itís the
dealers, the gun runners, the bad
businesses; all the people who
donít care for the morals set down
by law get the good life. I want
to take down this bastard, and I
canít because even though I know
heís a crook, I have to catch him
in the act, which proves very hard
to do, when catching him in the
act involves a lot more than the
phrase suggests. I tell you now,
cat, there is no fucking way I am
able to do this inside of the law;
Iím going to have to do it
outside, my own way.

INT. ALEX'S APARTMENT - DAY

                       RICARDO
Now let me introduce everyone to
Ted.

Rips the tape from Tedís mouth

                       TED
      (Looks up at
       Ricardo with
       steely hate)
You think youíre going to get away
with this?

                       RICARDO
Oh, I donít think thatís the
question you want to be asking.
Sure, Iím touched with your
concern for my welfare, but
considering your welfare, I think
you know what the question should
be.

                       TED
So whatís the answer?

                       RICARDO
Now that would just ruin the
surprise, wouldnít it?

96.

                       TED
Iím not one for fucking surprises.

                       RICARDO
I don't think that this is your
place to be trying to tell me what
to tell you. It is the other way
around, except that I have no
interest in anything that you
know, because you're a cop, and
cops know nothing.

                       TED
      (Becoming nervous)
Theyíll know everything ten
minutes after you leave here.

                       RICARDO
So what Ė just to answer your
question Ė if I kill you?

                       TED
Theyíll know itís you. They know
everything about your interactions
with Alex. Youíre the first person
theyíll come and find.

                       RICARDO
Au contraire, Alex is the first
person you idiot pigs will come
and find.
      (Ted looks
       confused)
Oh, for fucks sake, think about
it. He just found his wife
cheating on him, and quite
violently, he's a fucking psycho
      (gauges Ted's and
       Judith's
       questioning looks)
yes, I've done my homework, and
he's quit the force, with his tail
between his legs.

                       TED
No he fucking hasn't.

                       RICARDO
Oh, he has. He told me so
personally. And just between us
guys, I think heís going to choose
a life of crime.

97.

                       TED
Youíre just making up shit now.

                       RICARDO
Oh, no. Iím deadly serious.
      (Points to a cut
       on his face)
This is what he gave me when he
told me that. And all thisÖ well I
guess Iím just giving him a little
cut back.

Ted remains silent, as if he doesnít know what to say,
Judith is unnerved by this

                       RICARDO
Speaking of him, why donít we
alert him to the situation?
      (To Judith)
Whatís his cell phone number?

                       JUDITH
      (Rising confidence)
He doesnít need to get involved.

                       RICARDO
No, he fucking does. But if you
donít want to give me his number,
thatís fair enough. You ring him
      (cuts Judithís
       bonds on her arms
       and hands her a
       cell phone)

                       JUDITH
I canít. He wonít listen to me.
Not now.

                       RICARDO
      (With no reaction,
       he expected that
       response)
Thatís damn right. So whatís his
fucking number?

Judith grabs the phone punches in the number, presses ring
and hands it back to Ricardo with a defeated but still
defiant eye. Ricardo takes it back and presses it to his
ear, all the time looking into Judithís defiant eyes. The
screen halves with Alex hearing his phone ring and flinching
in disturbance; he takes his time in answering it.

98.

                       RICARDO (On Phone)
Hello there, you psycho son of a
bitch.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
Who is this?

                       RICARDO (On Phone)
Hey, why donít you take a guess?

                       ALEX (On Phone)
Look, Iím not in the mood. You
either tell me who the fuck you
are or I hang up.

                       RICARDO (On Phone)
You donít like games then? But I
do think itís in your best
interests that you donít hang up.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
      (Instantly angry)
Iím not fucking around, man,
whoever you are, Iím gonna find
out how you got my number and
fucking kill you.

                       RICARDO (On Phone)
Oh, I can tell you how I got you
number. Youíre wife gave it to me.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
My wife? What the fuck are you-

                       RICARDO (On Phone)
      (Interrupts)
As for the matter of who I am, Iím
fucking surprised that you havenít
got it yet. Youíre as dumb as
fuck.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
      (Shouting)
RICARDO, YOU MOTHERFUCKER IíLL-

                       RICARDO (On Phone)
Yes, yes itís me. I think youíd
like to know that I have two
people Ė no wait Ė

three people of significance to
you right here with me. In your
apartment. Would have had four,

Oh, I wouldn't bother coming down
here. If you did, you'd probably
find yourself looking like ketchup
covered mincemeat the instant you
step inside the door.

                       JUDITH
      (Screaming in
       desperation)
HEíLL DO IT! HEíLL KILL YOU,

YOU!

                       RICARDO (On Phone)
      (Smacks Judith
       across the face)
Do you want to know who Iíve got
here?

                       ALEX (On Phone)
What the fuck do you think?

                       RICARDO (On Phone)
      (Threatening)
Answer the question, or Iíll shoot
them all, and you wonít find out
until youíre examining their
bodies.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
      (Reluctantly)
Yes, I want to fucking know.

                       RICARDO (On Phone)
Excellent. I donít know what it is
with everyone today, they all seem
so unwilling to cooperate.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
So are you going to fucking tell
me who youíve got there?

Wait a minute, how the fuck do you
know about that?

                       RICARDO (On Phone)
You still donít get it, do you?

Look if you donít tell me what-

                       RICARDO (On Phone)

Oh, my gun's getting itchy. It
doesn't like the sound of your
voice.
      (Pause)
Are you done?
      (small pause)
Great, we can now get on with
business. Now, I take it you don't
like this cunt for obvious
reasons, do you want me to waste
her?

                       ALEX (On Phone)
What are you trying to pull? You
know I donít care what you do.

                       RICARDO (On Phone)
Is that your final answer? Sheís
here bleeding through her tits,
she probably would appreciate some
help.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
      (Flinches)
Look, there's no need to-

                       RICARDO (On Phone)

Sorry, I have to except your first
answer.

Ricardo holds his gun up to Sandrineís head.

                       SANDRINE (On Phone)
What are you going to do with
that?

Sandrine screams just before Ricardo shoots her in the head,
which is heard on Alex's end of the phone.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
      (Quietly)
NoÖ shitÖ

                       RICARDO (On Phone)
You know, you didnít seem too
confident about that choice. In
fact, Iím fairly sure that you
wanted her dead.
      (Jokingly)
Just be careful what you wish for,
eh?

                       ALEX (On Phone)
YOU FUCKING PSYCHO! GET THE FUCK
OUT OF MY HOUSE BEFORE I SEND YOU
AND EVERYONE YOU KNOW TO THE
MORGUE!

                       RICARDO (On Phone)
HEY, CALM THE FUCK DOWN! You don't
know how close I came to blasting
on everyone in this room and
hanging up, so you better fucking
chill.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
You pull another act like that,
and I swear-

Hey, Iím just here to implement
justice. I donít like being fucked
with.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
Just tell me who else you have.

                       RICARDO (On Phone)
Ok, then. I think you know that I
have your beautiful wife here
right next to me.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
I think I got that. You better not
have fucked her, or you know
whatís coming.

                       RICARDO (On Phone)
Hey, why does everyone keep saying
that? I have no interest in your
wife whatsoever, except, as you
know, to piss you off.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
Come on, motherfucker, you've done
enough. This is over the line. If
you want to end this come up to
the hills and fight me.

Shut the fuck up. Thatís some weak
fucking bargaining. You know what
Iím doing here; you have brought
me into the eye of the law, and
Iím fucking well performing for
them.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
You arenít going to survive this.

                       RICARDO (On Phone)
You have no fucking brain in that
pretty little head of yours. The
cops canít touch me.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
Thereís one that can. And Iíll
touch you so hard youíll think
that fucking Satan himself is
tearing you.

                       RICARDO (On Phone)
You are so certain of your wager.
I like that. Thatís faith. Perhaps
you have faith that the remaining
two people here will come out
alive.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
Knowing you, Iím pretty certain of
the opposite.

torturing other people. Youíve
been after me for no fucking
reason, other than for kicks.

Weíll see about that. Here comes
another pointless kick.

Ricardo takes his gun to under Judithís chin, who is crying
silently, and shoots.

                       ALEX (On Phone)

want, and Iíll let him walk out
the door without a scratch.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
So what do I have to do?

                       RICARDO (On Phone)
I want you to come down here, to
your apartment, completely unarmed
and without any fucking hissy
fits, and the guy walks.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
Who is it?

                       RICARDO (On Phone)
Youíll find out when you get here.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
No, tell me now, or I ain't
playing.

                       RICARDO (On Phone)
Thatís your choice, but Iím
telling you, Iím giving you half
an hour, starting now, to get your
ass down here, or you would have
been responsible for the death of
a third person tonight.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
What will you do once I get there?

                       RICARDO (On Phone)
Iíll take you hostage, weíll go
straight to my private jet, and
leave the country. For good.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
What country? Whereís the jet?

105.

                       RICARDO (On Phone)
I know what youíre doing, and Iím
not going to give you that
information, because the hostage I
have here will get out alive, and
I know from who he is, that he
will definitely inform the police.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
      (Sarcastically)
Youíre a clever bastard. Been
watching a lot of movies?

                       RICARDO (On Phone)
Iím going to stop you there.
Youíre wasting the last few
seconds of this manís life, so if
it will spur you into action, I
will tell you who he is.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
Stop fucking stalling and tell me.

                       RICARDO (On Phone)
      (Slowly)
The man sitting next to me, is
someone very close to you. He has
helped you out on many occasions,
fighting side by side with you, on
the force, and his name is
      (at the same time
       Alex mouths
       ĎWillí)
Ted.

                       ALEX (On Phone)
WHAT? TED? Fuck, Iím coming.

                       RICARDO (On Phone)
Ever the hero. But just before you
go, I want to know exactly what
youíre doing, so if you hang up,
Iíll kill him.

get here and not soon after, the
cops will be swarming the place.

Ricardo hangs up phone.

INT. ALEX'S APARTMENT - DAY

This scene is a flashback to when Alex got wasted on the
vodka. The scene starts with Alex waking up in his flat,
next to the wall he was sitting against. He stands up, still
very drunk and sways on his feet for a while, until he
steadies himself on the wall. He stumbles for the door and

107.

walks out of the apartment, down the hallway, to the lift
where he proceeds to go down and exits into the lobby. The
camera switches to a car, which is waiting outside. It is
dark so that it is impossible to see the occupants, one of
whom has just climbed in; they are Ricardo and an assistant.

                       RICARDO
Did you see where he is?

                       RICARDO'S ASSISTANT
Slumped up against the wall.

                       RICARDO
The bedroom?

                       RICARDO'S ASSISTANT
No, just a little room at the
side.

                       RICARDO
Perfect. His wife should be home
in ten minutes, heíll be ok then.

                       RICARDO'S ASSISTANT
Oh shit, heís coming out now!

Alex stumbles out of the buildingís front doors and tries to
walk down the street, the two men leave the car, their faces
still not seen. They run over to him and help him up and
into the building again, getting in the lift, and taking him
to his apartment. Once in, Ricardo talks to Alex

                       RICARDO
Stay here, youíll be safest here,
and Iíll get you the phone so that
if you feel in danger, you can
call 911.

Alex nods and blurts out a noise of approval. He starts to
shiver violently.

                       RICARDO
      (To assistant)
Get him a sheet, he might freeze
to death or something.
      (To Alex)
Where is your phone? And your
sheets?

                       ALEX
      (Straining to talk)
Table in lounge. Cupboard next to
bed.

108.

Ricardo nods to his assistant who then leaves and a couple
of minutes later, in which time Ricardo wipes Alexís face
and makes him comfortable, returns with a phone and a thin
duvet. Ricardo places the phone next to Alex and then drapes
the duvet over him.

                       RICARDO
Remember to stay here. Your wife
should be home in a few minutes to
look after you then.

Ricardo stands up revealing himself to be Ricardo as the
light falls over his face, and leaves.

EXT. ALEX'S CAR - DAY

The scene starts by following Alex's car as it drives
through the streets of L.A.

                       ALEX (VO)
The story so far: I've lost my
mother, my wife and one of my best
friends to a drug dealing, chicken
fucking maniac. It was impossible
to crush him from above, wearing a
badge of honour, so I'm gonna have
to go underground and pull him
down before he hits any of my few
remaining loved ones. I've made a
wager and put my life as the
stakes; Fuck am I gonna lose.

The car comes to stop, apparently nowhere special. The
driver side door opens, and Alex's feet are seen getting out
and walking around the bonnet to lean against the passenger
side door, the camera travels up his body, and he is smoking
and looking into the distance. Across the street from him
and a little further down, there is a group of young adult
African American gangsters who look as if they are preparing
to leave the house they are gathered outside. Suddenly, in
the distance, the roar of a motorbike is heard, which makes
the black gangsters anxious. This is soon confirmed by a
bike coming down the road at a great speed, with two people,
a driver and a gunner, who is blazing at the black
gangsters, who are all diving for cover. The bikers do not
get close enough to them, because they are suddenly both
shot in the chests, sending the bike flying. The camera sees
Alex, gun raised, just about to place it into his holster
again. As he is doing so, he approaches the gangsters

109.

                       ALEX
You should be careful, you donít
want to be making the wrong
enemies.

One of the gangsters, Jerome, stands up, brushes himself off
and addresses Alex.

                       JEROME
Who are you?

                       ALEX
An ally you want to have. I know
about your fight against these
bastards
      (indicates to one
       of the bikers)
and their leaderÖ Ricardo.

                       JEROME
How the fuck do you know about
that?
