THE ROSE: AN ADAPTATION OF A BROTHERS GRIMM FAIRY TALE (SHORT)
|
FADE IN:
|
EXT. HOUSE - DAY |
|
A small run down house sits on the outskirts of the forest. |
|
|
INT. HOUSE - DAY |
|
MOTHER, poorly dressed,35, is walking about the house doing
daily chores. She walks over to the pantry. She opens it.
Inside is a few scraps of bread and some rotten food. MOTHER
sighs. |
|
Two poorly dressed, sick looking children; EMILY,7, and
DAVID 12, walk out of a room and towards MOTHER. |
|
|
EMILY AND DAVID
Good morning Mother |
|
|
|
MOTHER
(turning to the
children)
Good morning my dears. Did you
sleep well? |
|
|
|
|
|
MOTHER
I am glad. But now it is time for
your chores. |
|
|
EMILY and DAVID sigh. MOTHER smiles. |
|
MOTHER kneels down in front of EMILY. |
|
|
MOTHER
You my little one, your job will
be to fetch wood from the forest,
for your brother will be going to
town for a few days. So while he
is gone it will be up to you to
(MORE)
|
|

|
MOTHER (cont'd)
fetch the wood. |
|
|
|
|
|
MOTHER
But do be careful and do not stray
too far into the forest. |
|
|
MOTHER, DAVID, and EMILY walk to the front door. EMILY and
DAVID put on their worn out shoes. DAVID grabs a carrying
bag. |
|
|
EXT. HOUSE - DAY |
|
The front door opens. MOTHER, DAVID, and EMILY walk outside. |
|
MOTHER kisses DAVID and EMILY on the forehead. |
|
DAVID walks off down the road. |
|
EMILY heads into the forest. |
|
|
EXT. FOREST - DAY |
|
EMILY is skipping through the forest. It's a beautiful day. |
|
She stops and picks up some wood. |
|
She keeps walking, stopping occasionally to pick up more
wood. |
|
She walks deeper into the forest. She struggles to hold on
to the pile of wood. |
|
CHILD, strong, healthy boy,10, slips out of the bushes and
startles EMILY. EMILY drops the pile of wood. |
|
|
CHILD
Please, do not be frightened. I
did not mean to startle you. |
|
|
3.
|
|
EMILY
(taking a few
steps back)
What do you want? |
|
|
|
CHILD
I was walking through the forest
when I saw you struggling with
that pile of wood. |
|
|
CHILD walks over and starts picking up the wood. |
|
|
CHILD (CONT'D)
And I wanted to help. |
|
|
EMILY smiles and walks over and helps CHILD pick up the
wood. |
|
|
EMILY
My name is Emily. I am not very
strong and this wood is heavy. But
it is my job because my brother is
in town and I have to help mother
until he gets back. |
|
|
|
CHILD
I see. Well I am glad to help. It
is the least I can do. |
|
|
They finish picking up the wood. |
|
|
CHILD
There we go. You lead the way back
to your house and I will carry the
wood. |
|
|
EMILY nods. She starts heading back through the forest.
CHILD follows behind her. |
|
|
EXT. HOUSE - DAY |
|
It is sunset.EMILY and CHILD come walking up to the front of
the house. CHILD puts the wood down by the house. He walks
over to EMILY. |
|
4.
|
|
CHILD
Well, there you are |
|
|
|
EMILY
Thank you very much. Would you
like to come ins... |
|
|
|
MOTHER (O.S.)
(interupting)
Emily is that you? |
|
|
EMILY looks away from CHILD and towards the house. |
|
|
EMILY
Yes mother it is me. Come outside
and meet my friend from the
forest. |
|
|
EMILY looks back at CHILD. CHILD is gone. |
|
MOTHER comes outside. She looks around. She sees only EMILY. |
|
|
MOTHER
Oh, and just where would that
friend be? |
|
|
|
EMILY
(confused)
He was right here, a boy, he
helped me carry the wood back. |
|
|
|
MOTHER
(teasing)
Is that so? Well I think you have
been out in the sun too long. |
|
|
|
EMILY
(crossing her arms)
I am telling the truth. He was
real and he was right here. |
|
|
|
MOTHER
Alright enough of this. Come
inside and will fix you something
to eat before bed. |
|
|
5.
|
EMILY sighs and walks into the house. MOTHER follows behind
her. |
|
|
|
FADE IN. |
|
|
INT. HOUSE - DAY |
|
MOTHER is walking about the house. |
|
EMILY walks out of a room yawning and stretching. |
|
|
EMILY
Good morning mother. |
|
|
|
MOTHER
Morning my child. Are you ready to
go collect wood. |
|
|
|
EMILY
Yes. Maybe I will meet that boy
again and he will help me, and
this time I will show you that he
is real. |
|
|
|
MOTHER
Maybe, anything is possible. |
|
|
|
EXT. FOREST - DAY |
|
EMILY is walking along gathering wood. |
|
CHILD slips out of the bushes and startles EMILY. EMILY
drops the wood. |
|
|
CHILD
Sorry I did not mean startle you
again. |
|
|
6.
|
|
EMILY
That is okay. Where did you go
yesterday? I tried to tell my
mother about you but she would not
believe me. |
|
|
CHILD walks over and picks up the wood. EMILY helps him. |
|
|
CHILD
It was getting late and I had to
go. |
|
|
EMILY and CHILD walk off into the forest. |
|
|
EXT. HOUSE - DAY |
|
It is sunset. EMILY and CHILD come walking up to the house.
CHILD puts wood down. |
|
|
CHILD
There you go. I wish I could stay
but I must be off. |
|
|
|
EMILY
But why? I want you to meet my
mother so that she will believe
me. |
|
|
CHILD pulls out a rose not fully bloomed from his jacket and
hands it to EMILY. |
|
|
CHILD
Here take this rose and place it
in water. When it is in full bloom
I will return. |
|
|
EMILY takes the rose and heads toward the front door. She
stops and looks back. CHILD is gone. She walks in the house. |
|
|
INT. HOUSE - DAY |
|
MOTHER is cooking supper. EMILY comes running up to her,
holding out the rose. |
|
7.
|
|
EMILY
Look mother. I met that boy again
and he gave me a rose. |
|
|
MOTHER turns around and sees the rose. |
|
|
MOTHER
(humoring EMILY)
Well that was nice of him. But the
rose is not blooming. |
|
|
|
EMILY
He said to put it in water and
when it was fully bloomed he would
come back. Then you can meet him. |
|
|
|
MOTHER
(taking the rose)
Very well, now go wash up for
supper. |
|
|
EMILY runs off. MOTHER places the rose in a vase and fills
it with water. She places the vase on the windowsill in the
kitchen. |
|
|
|
FADE IN. |
|
|
INT. HOUSE - DAY |
|
MOTHER is walking about the house. |
|
|
MOTHER
Emily my child it is time to get
out of bed and do your chores. |
|
|
MOTHER hears no reply. She walks over to the room and opens
the door. |
|
|
MOTHER
Come now child time to get up. |
|
|
EMILY is lying in her bed dead. She has a peaceful smile on
her face. |
|
8.
|
MOTHER rushes over and drops at her bedside. She checks
EMILY. She begins to cry. |
|
CAMERA SHOT: camera moves back to the kitchen windowsill. In
the windowsill is the vase with rose. The rose is fully
bloomed. |

FADE OUT. |

I love it, something new a little short but that can always be stretched out a bit. Reminds me just how dark those fairy tales can keep up the good work. |
