Learning Curve 2
by Orbin Walcott (orbinwalcott@yahoo.com)

Rated: R   Genre: Drama   User Review: ****
The boys from "Learning Curve" have just completed their first year of college. Our protagonist from the first story, Anthony, has finally found a balance between his parental life and personal life, thanks to his loving girlfriend, Alicia. His friends convince him to go on a road trip to Florida, even though he's run into his ex-girlfriend, Nikki, who plans on stealing their daughter away from him. Learning Curve 2 details the journey a young man must take to stay loyal to himself, his friends, and above all else, his family. Because the road can truly test one's limits.

FADE IN:

EXT. COLLEGE CAMPUS - ESTABLISH - DAY

We're looking at an establishing shot over an entire college
campus in the heart of Boston, PANNING AROUND school
buildings and the like, until we see a sign telling us where
we are: "EMERSON COLLEGE".

                                         CUT TO:

INT. EMERSON COLLEGE, FILM CLASS - DAY

It's the final day of class, and there are within fifteen
STUDENTS -- some bored, some attentive -- hearing PROFESSOR
SPALDING, mid-50s, giving a lecture that seems to be going
on forever. Among the bored students is ANTHONY RAMOS, 20,
who is anxiously waiting in his seat. His eyes are
constantly on the clock:

CU - CLOCK FACE

It's five minutes to three PM.

BACK TO SCENE

Anthony has aged one year, but still looks the same as when
we last saw him.

                       PROF. SPALDING
      (to class)
...And so when you are all
directing your first feature,
remember that it is also a team
effort, not just your own. Your
assignment for the summer is to
shoot and edit a home movie about
anything. It can be a music video,
as long as its tasteful, or simply
a documentary. I'm expecting the
work to be done, come this fall.

The school bell RINGS (OS).

                       PROF. SPALDING (cont'd)
Class dismissed. Have a great
summer everyone. And remember: our
editing rooms will be available
all summer for your use!

2.

All the students pack their things, getting ready to leave.
A young female student passes by Anthony, as she heads out.
Call her JASMINE.

                       JASMINE
      (smiling)
Have a good summer, Tony.

                       ANTHONY
You too, Jasmine.

He gets his bag then leaves.

                                         CUT TO:

EXT. SUFFOLK UNIVERSITY - DAY

The familiar TOYOTA COROLLA, that belongs to Anthony, pulls
up to the front of the campus. ANGLE ON ALICIA ROJAS, 19,
walking out with a few girlfriends. As she carries her
backpack, we can clearly see the ENGAGEMENT RING given to
her by Anthony, on her ring finger. She waves good bye to
her friends before walking to the Toyota. She gets in:

                                         CUT TO:

INT. TOYOTA

Alicia gets in the passenger's seat, happy to see Anthony as
she tosses her bag in the back seat.

                       ALICIA
      (smiling)
Hey, Babe!

                       ANTHONY
      (smiling)
Wassup?

They share a small kiss.

                       ALICIA
      (thinking aloud)
Finally, summer vacation!!

                       ANTHONY
      (smiling)
I know, right? But, I still gotta
do an assignment for Professor
Spalding.

3.

                       ALICIA
Tell me about it -- journalism
sucks! I have to do a few reports
for the summer. And I'm starting
my new job soon!

                       ANTHONY
That sucks. But at least you're
working this summer.

                       ALICIA
Why'd you quit your job at Boston
Medical, anyway? Last time I went
there, people were asking about
you.

                       ANTHONY
It was cutting into my quality
time with Jessie.

                       ALICIA
Oh.
      (smiling)
Well, good luck with the job hunt,
Baby!

                       ANTHONY
      (chuckles)
Wow! Thank you. Hey so, now that
the year's over, did Alex try
anything on you?

                       ALICIA
      (smirking)
Why do you ask? You don't trust
us?

                       ANTHONY
Look, I know it's fucked up to
question you guys, but knowing
him, I just need to know.

                       ALICIA
      (jokingly)
Well, there was that one time...

                       ANTHONY
Oh, that son of a --

4.

                       ALICIA
      (smiling)
I'm kidding! He was a gentleman.
Actually, he fought off every dude
that tried to ask me out.

                       ANTHONY
      (awkwardly)
Oh. Um... okay, cool.

She chuckles then they drive off.

                                         DISSOLVE TO:

EXT. RAMOS RESIDENCE - ESTABLISH - EARLY EVENING

We see the Ramos' home in the same Dorchester neighborhood
as before, as the Toyota pulls up to the curb. There are
many children playing outside, as Alicia & Anthony step out
of the car.

                                         CUT TO:

INT. RAMOS RESIDENCE

Anthony & Alicia walk in through the front door. Upon
entering, JESSICA RAMOS, 6, runs up to them and greets them
both with a hug.

                       JESSICA
      (smiling)
Hi, Mommy! Hi, Daddy!

                       ANTHONY/ALICIA
      (smiling)
Hey, Sweetie.

The trio walk into the living room, where ISABEL & PABLO,
now in their early forties, are sitting down and watching
TV. Isabel is holding DAVID ROJAS, Anthony & Alicia's
months-old baby.

                       PABLO
      (smiling)
Hey, it's the college students!
How was the first year?

                       ANTHONY
Hey, Pablo. It was cool.

Alicia walks over to Isabel, and takes the baby off her
hands. David is wide awake and cheerful:

5.

                       ALICIA
      (in Spanish)
Hi, Isabel. How's my baby doing?

                       ISABEL
Hi, Alicia. David's fine; he's
been awake, playing with his
sister. Are you staying for
dinner?

                       ALICIA
Oh, sorry but I can't. I promised
my sister I'd go shopping with
her. Maybe next time, though.

Suddenly, Anthony's cellphone RINGS (OS).

                       ANTHONY
Excuse me.
      (into phone)
Hello?

                       MANNY
      (from phone)
Yo, wassup!

                       ANTHONY
      (into phone)
Nothin', Homie. Waz good?

                       MANNY
      (from phone)
Me and the fellas 'bout to go out
to eat. You down?

                       ANTHONY
      (into phone)
Uh... yeah, sure. I'll see what I
can do.

                       MANNY
      (from phone)
A'ight, peace.

                       ANTHONY
      (into phone)
Peace.

He hangs up then heads back into the living room.

                       ALICIA
      (to Anthony)
Who was it?

6.

                       ANTHONY
Manny. He invited me out to eat.
You don't mind, do you, Ma?

                       ISABEL
Go ahead. And tell the boys I said
hi.

                       ANTHONY
I will.
      (to Alicia)
You need a ride, Baby?

                       ALICIA
Yeah, please.

Alicia carries David and his bag, as she and Anthony leave
the house.

                       ALICIA
      (to Isabel & Pablo)
Good night.

                       ISABEL/PABLO
Good night, Alicia.

                                         CUT TO:

EXT. T.G.I. FRIDAY'S - ESTABLISH - NIGHT

The parking lot is full as Anthony heads inside the
restaurant.

                                         CUT TO:

INT. T.G.I. FRIDAY'S

Sitting at a booth are Anthony's friends: ALEX PEREZ, 20;
MANNY FONSECA, 19; and MARTIN "TAM-TAM" JONES, 19, who is
wearing a sharp suit at the moment. Anthony approaches their
table, and takes a seat as they look through MENUS:

                       ANTHONY
      (smiling)
Waz good, fellas!

                       ALEX
Waz good, Tony.

                       TAM-TAM
'Sup, T?

7.

                       ANTHONY
Yo, what's with the suit?

                       TAM-TAM
Economics at Salem State. We had
mock interviews and shit today.

                       ANTHONY
I see. So, how was y'all's first
year?

                       MANNY
Cambridge College treated me
pretty good. IT is no joke,
though.

                       ALEX
      (smiling)
My first year at Suffolk was the
shit! I've never seen so many fine
chicks in one school!

                       ANTHONY
      (grinning)
One of 'em better not've been my
fiancée.

                       ALEX
      (chuckles)
Naw, man. But I did take care of
her for you.

                       ANTHONY
Yeah, I heard.
      (to Manny &
       Tam-Tam)
Apparently, this dude was actin'
jealous for me -- fightin' niggas
off Alicia an' shit!

They all laugh.

                       ALEX
      (smiling)
Hey, somebody had to!

A cute young waitress named CARLA approaches the table, with
her notepad in hand.

                       CARLA
Hi, guys, my name is Carla; I'll
be your waitress for this evening.

8.

                       MANNY
Hey.

                       CARLA
Can I start you off with something
to drink?

                       TAM-TAM
Uh...yeah, I'll have a coke.

                       ALEX
I'll have a sprite.

                       ANTHONY
Can I have an ice tea, please?

                       CARLA
      (writing it down)
Sure.

                       MANNY
Same here.

                       CARLA
      (writing it down)
Coming right up.
      (to Tam-Tam)
By the way, I like your suit!

                       TAM-TAM
      (smiling)
Oh, thanks.

She leaves.

                       ALEX
So, T, how was your freshman year?

                       ANTHONY
Mine's was...interesting. When
you're knee-deep in dirty diapers,
it's kinda hard to think about
school. But, hey, I got to take
some film courses!

                       TAM-TAM
Yo, why do you always do that?!

                       ANTHONY
What?

9.

                       TAM-TAM
Talk about your kids during
moments like these! Like, who the
fuck wants to hear about dirty
diapers at a fuckin' restaurant?!

                       MANNY
Yeah, Tony. I mean, we love your
kids and all, but there's just
some things that you keep to
yourself, man!

                       ANTHONY
Okay, I'm sorry! Damn, I guess my
college life ain't really all that
exciting...

                       TAM-TAM
A'ight, look, my bad. I wasn't
trying to be an asshole -- you
know your family are like family
to us too. But damn, homie, you
need to get out more!

Carla returns with the drinks.

                       ANTHONY
Thank you.

                       CARLA
      (smiling)
You're welcome. So, are you boys
ready to order?

                       ALL
Yeah.

She readies her notepad.

                                         CUT TO:

INT. T.G.I. FRIDAY'S - LATER

The boys are already going through their meals: Tam-Tam has
a CHEESEBURGER AND FRIES; Alex has a PASTA DISH; Manny is
working through BUFFALO WINGS AND MOZZARELLA STICKS; and
Anthony has a STEAK DINNER.

                       ALEX
Yo, did I tell y'all 'bout what
happened to me on spring break?

10.

                       ANTHONY
Naw, what happened?

                       ALEX
A'ight, well this year Suffolk
took some people up to Montreal.

                       MANNY
Canada? For what?

                       ALEX
It was spring break, Manny. We
didn't need a reason. Besides,
drinking age is eighteen, up
there.

                       TAM-TAM
What about weed, is it legal?

                       ALEX
Only if its prescribed. It's not
like you can walk the streets with
it, like in Amsterdam.

                       TAM-TAM
      (smiling)
See, that's why I'm going to
Amsterdam next year!

                       ANTHONY
      (to Alex)
A'ight, get on with the story.

                       ALEX (cont'd)
Okay. So, me and my two roommates
are in a hotel the first night
there. We're bored so we said
"fuck it, let's go to a bar." We
get to one, and we start knocking
back some shots. Then, these two
Canadian dudes come up to us, and
automatically figure that we're
American. They tell us about this
strip club, "The Foxhole" they
called it, and we all go.

                       MANNY
      (smiling)
Wait, what's the place called?

                       ALEX
The Foxhole.

11.

                       MANNY
      (chuckles)
What, this place have an army
theme or somethin'?

                       ALEX
      (smiling)
Something like that. Anyways,
we're payin' for lap-dances, and
this fine stripper named Cherry
approaches me for a private dance.
Needless to say, we fucked. But
when I get out, I see that my
white boy roommate, Todd, is
acting all funny. I asked my other
roommate, Dominic, what happened
and he says one of the Canadians
had slipped Todd a mean dose of X
in his drink.

                       TAM-TAM
He was trippin', wasn't he?

                       ALEX
HARD.

They laugh.

                       ANTHONY
      (smiling)
So, then what happened to you,
Alex?

                       ALEX
      (smiling)
What do you mean?

                       ANTHONY
You said somethin' happened to
you.

                       ALEX
      (smiling)
Yeah, I got some Canadian booty!
Weren't you listening?

                       TAM-TAM
Yo, dawg, that's what we should
do!

                       MANNY
What, take some X and get laid?

12.

                       TAM-TAM
Other than the ecstasy, yeah sure.
But what I'm really talkin' about
is a road trip - just us four.

                       ANTHONY
I don't know, man...

                       TAM-TAM
Naw, hear me out. Now each one of
us has been working since freshman
year in high school, right?

                       ALEX
Yeah, so?

                       TAM-TAM
So, we all should have some money
saved up in the bank.

They all get a look on their faces, considering the idea.

                       ALEX
      (beat)
How long you wanna do this for?

                       TAM-TAM
      (shrugs)
Couple'a weeks, at the most.

                       ANTHONY
      (to Alex)
Well, I do have an aunt in Miami.
      (to Tam-Tam)
I guess that could be our
destination.

                       TAM-TAM
      (nodding)
Yeah.

                       ANTHONY
      (thinking aloud)
Of course, I'd have to discuss it
with the wifey.

                       TAM-TAM
You do that. How 'bout you, Manny,
you in?

13.

                       MANNY
I ain't got shit-else goin' this
summer, so why not? But, who's
ride we takin'?

                       ANTHONY
Not mine!

                       TAM-TAM
Let me worry about that. So its
settled, we're goin' on a road
trip.

Tam-Tam raises his glass, and they all toast to the idea.

                                         CUT TO:

EXT. ROJAS RESIDENCE - ESTABLISH - NIGHT

Anthony's Toyota is parked out front, and he's headed
inside.

                                         CUT TO:

INT. ALICIA'S BEDROOM

There's a KNOCK (OS) at the door, as a pajama-clad Alicia is
sitting on her bed, gently rocking Baby David to sleep. Her
room still looks the same as before, even with the inclusion
of a CRIB for the baby.

                       ALICIA
Come in.

Anthony enters the room, closing the door behind:

                       ANTHONY
      (softly)
Hey, Baby.

                       ALICIA
      (softly)
Hey.

He kisses her, then sits next to her on the bed.

                       ANTHONY
      (softly)
How's my little man doin'?

                       ALICIA
      (softly)
He's fine. 'Finally went to sleep.

14.

She gets up and puts the baby in the crib.

                       ALICIA
Baby, it's kinda late. What're you
doin' here?

                       ANTHONY
I wanted to talk to you about
something.

                       ALICIA
Okay, but can we talk outside? I
don't want David to wake up.

                       ANTHONY
Mmm-hmm, sure.

                                         CUT TO:

EXT. ROJAS RESIDENCE, FRONT PORCH

Anthony walks out onto the porch; Alicia follows behind,
closing the front door for privacy.

                       ALICIA
What's up?

                       ANTHONY
Well, I was just talkin' with the
fellas, and we got this thing
planned for the summer.

                       ALICIA
What kind of thing?

                       ANTHONY
A road trip.

                       ALICIA
A road trip? To where?

                       ANTHONY
Miami.

                       ALICIA
For how long, though?

                       ANTHONY
'Few weeks, maybe less.

                       ALICIA
But, Baby, I thought we'd be
spending time together this
summer. Remember, I got pregnant
            (MORE)

15.

                       ALICIA (cont'd)
last year, and we didn't get to do
much but go to the hospital.

                       ANTHONY
Sweetie, I know. But it's only for
a few weeks. We'll have the rest
of the summer together - just you,
me and the kids. And besides...
      (smirking)
...being away from you for so
long, I'm gonna wanna do more than
spend time.

She smiles, knowing exactly what he means.

                       ALICIA
You promise you'll call me?

                       ANTHONY
Everyday. And if not, you'll call
me, right?

                       ALICIA
      (smiling)
Hell yeah! 'Make sure you ain't
messin' with no hood rats!

                       ANTHONY
So, I can go?

                       ALICIA
      (hesistant)
Yeah, go. I'll take care of the
kids.

                       ANTHONY
      (smiling)
You're the best, Alicia!

                       ALICIA
      (smiling)
I know.

He kisses her.

                       ANTHONY
I'll see you tomorrow.

                       ALICIA
Okay. Good night.

16.

                       ANTHONY
Good night.

He gets in his car and drives off, while she heads back into
the house.

                                         DISSOLVE TO:

EXT. CAR DEALERSHIP - DAY

A used car dealership, somewhere in Boston. Tam-Tam walks
into the lot. WILLIE NEWTON, the salesman in his mid-40s,
greets Tam-Tam upon entering the lot.

                       WILLIE
      (smiling)
Hi, I'm Willie Newton. How can I
help you?

                       TAM-TAM
Hey, I'm Martin Jones. We spoke on
the phone earlier.

                       WILLIE
      (realizing)
Oh, yeah, Mr. Jones! What can I
help you with today?

                       TAM-TAM
Well, I'm lookin' for a good car
that has a decent amount of
mileage on it. And at a convenient
price too.

                       WILLIE
      (smiling)
Well, you sure sound like you know
what you want, kid.

                       TAM-TAM
Yeah, I'm going on a road trip
with some friends.

                       WILLIE
Then, let's have a look around,
shall we?

They walk around, checking out the various cars in the lot.
The first car they stop in front of is a 1995 NISSAN MAXIMA
GLE.

17.

                       WILLIE
How 'bout this one? 1995 Nissan
Maxima GLE. It's in good
condition, has working air
conditioning, front-wheel drive --
a smooth ride overall.

                       TAM-TAM
Eh...it's looks cool, but I need
something a little more spacious.

                       WILLIE
Well, come over here, and take a
look at --

                       TAM-TAM
      (noticing)
Yo, what is that?

Willie turns as Tam-Tam quickly goes over to a classic
beauty, a 1967 CHEVY IMPALA. His expressions shows that this
is the car he wants.

                       TAM-TAM
      (excited)
Oh, man, you gotta tell me what
car this is!

                       WILLIE
      (smiling)
That, Mr. Jones, is a sixty-seven
Chevy Impala.

Tam-Tam simply can't believe what he's seeing here, as he
can't contain himself. He gestures to get in:

                       TAM-TAM
Can I?

                       WILLIE
Be my guest.

Tam-Tam gets in the driver's seat. He's loving it.

                       WILLIE
This baby's been fully restored.
It's got great space for your
friends, when you go on that trip.
And great mileage too. How does it
feel?

18.

                       TAM-TAM
      (smiling)
I could cry, man!

                       WILLIE
      (chuckles)
Well, for ten thousand, you won't
have to.

                       TAM-TAM
Ten thousand? Damn, I can't afford
that.

                       WILLIE
How much can you afford?

                       TAM-TAM
Seven thousand.

                       WILLIE
      (beat)
I like you, kid, so I'll tell you
what? I'll knock off four
thousand, and that way you'll save
some money for your trip. We have
a deal?

                       TAM-TAM
      (beat)
Deal.

They shake hands and Tam-Tam gets out of the car.

                                         CUT TO:

EXT. SOUTH BAY SHOPPING CENTER - ESTABLISH - DAY

This is one of the local malls in Dorchester. The parking
lot is full as we see many consumers all throughout.

                                         CUT TO:

INT. BEST BUY

Anthony & Alicia, along with Jessica, enter the store. They
walk around, checking out the merchandise. The DVDs seem to
attract Anthony's attention as he heads over and checks them
out.

                       JESSICA
Daddy, I'm gonna check out the
games.

19.

                       ANTHONY
Okay, sweetie, but stay close.

Jessica ignores him as she quickly heads over to the games.
Anthony and Alicia continue on to the CDs:

                       ALICIA
      (browsing CDs)
Hmm...Aventura has a new album
out. I so need to get me an iPod.

                       ANTHONY
      (browsing CDs)
How come you don't have one?

                       ALICIA
      (shrugs)
I dunno. Never felt the need to, I
guess. Besides, I never had the
money for one.

                       ANTHONY
What? But you've had a job since
before I met you.

                       ALICIA
      (smiling)
Yeah, a part-time job. And you
forget, Tony, I'm a girl. I buy
girly things.

                       ANTHONY
I've seen plenty of girls with
iPods.

                       ALICIA
So?

                       ANTHONY
      (realizing)
Oh, I get it now! This is one of
those moments where you tell me
how you don't have something, and
I'm supposed to provide it
somehow.

                       ALICIA
      (smiling)
What? Nuh-uh! Matter of fact, how
can you say that when you're gonna
be my husband?

20.

                       ANTHONY
Hey, I didn't object. I'm just
wondering if this is, like,
"training" for marriage. You know
what? Fine, I'll get you the iPod.

                       ALICIA
Baby, I'm not asking you to --

                       ANTHONY
      (walking away)
No, I insist. Besides, I should
shut up now.

Alicia chuckles to herself as he walks away.

                       ALICIA
      (smiling)
Wow!

She follows him.

                                         CUT TO:

INT. BEST BUY, CAMERA BOOTH - LATER

Alicia, holding a brand new IPOD BOX, accompanies Anthony by
the camera booth, as he's attended by a SALESCLERK. The
clerk is demonstrating various CAMCORDERS to help Anthony
make a decision.

                       SALESCLERK
... Now, this camera is high-def,
which is good for when you want
your home movies to have the
clearest image possible.

                       ANTHONY
Yeah... that's cool, but I don't
really need high definition.
Besides, the price is a bit high
for me.

                       SALESCLERK
Oh, well take a look at this...

They move on to another camcorder:

                       SALESCLERK (cont'd)
This is a Sony MiniDV Handycam;
it's priced at two-fifty and has
Super Steadyshot, to reduce
shaking.

21.

                       ANTHONY
MiniDV... that's those little
cassettes, right?

                       SALESCLERK
Mmm-hmm.

                       ANTHONY
Do you have that same camera, but
with a hard drive? I don't wanna
have to worry about buying tapes.

                       SALESCLERK
Yeah.
      (points out camera)
This is that same camera, with a
thirty gig hard drive.

                       ANTHONY
How much is it?

                       SALESCLERK
Uh...four hundred and fifty
dollars.

                       ANTHONY
      (beat)
I'll take it.

                       SALESCLERK
I'll go get one for you.

The Salesclerk leaves.

                       ALICIA
So, why do you need a camera?

                       ANTHONY
School project. 'Professor wants
us to document something this
summer.

                       ALICIA
What do you have in mind?

                       ANTHONY
      (sighs)
The trip, I guess. It's the only
interesting thing, I can think of.

                       ALICIA
      (smart-aleck)
And not me?

22.

                       ANTHONY
Alicia, how many movies have you
seen, starring just one person?
C'mon, I'm trying to be a
filmmaker here.

                       ALICIA
      (nodding)
Point taken.

Jessica shows up with a SUPER MARIO BROTHERS game in hand:

                       JESSICA
Daddy, can you buy me this?

                       ANTHONY
Sorry, honey, I don't have a lot
of money to spend.

                       JESSICA
But, you're buying Mommy the iPod.

                       ANTHONY
      (stammering)
Uh...I...

                       ALICIA
      (to Jessica)
Don't worry, Baby, I'll buy it for
you.

                       JESSICA
      (smiling)
Thank you.

                       NIKKI (OS)
Anthony?

Anthony turns, finding NIKKI SANDOVAL, his ex-girlfriend,
nearby with some GIRLFRIENDS; this is Jessica's biological
mother, the one who broke Anthony's heart when we first met
him. Nikki, 22, is looking pretty cute now, as she
approaches Anthony and Alicia, who curiously watches:

                       NIKKI (cont'd)
      (smiling)
It is you!

                       ANTHONY
      (confused)
Oh... hey...?

23.

                       NIKKI
      (walking up)
Wow, this is a weird coincidence.
What're you doing here?

                       ANTHONY
Shopping, like everyone else.

                       NIKKI
      (noticing Jessica)
And who's this little angel?

Jessica shies away, behind Alicia.

                       ANTHONY
That's my daughter, Jessica. I
thought you had left, Nikki.

                       NIKKI
Oh, I moved back to Boston a while
ago. I'm just lookin' for work
now.

                       ANTHONY
Ohhkayyy...

The salesclerk returns with the camcorder, handing it to
Anthony.

                       SALESCLERK
Here you go, sir.

                       ANTHONY
Thanks. Well, we gotta go, Nikki.
Good bye.

Anthony takes Alicia's hand as they walk past Nikki, and
towards the cashiers. Jessica quickly follows behind; Nikki
takes notice of Anthony's behavior.

                                         CUT TO:

INT. APPLEBEE'S RESTAURANT - LATER

Having bought their items, Anthony and the girls are now
sitting at a booth in the restaurant. Jessica is sitting
next to Alicia, admiring her game, as Alicia sits across
from Anthony, who looks worried:

                       ALICIA
Tony, what's wrong? Who was that
girl?

24.

                       ANTHONY
I don't wanna talk about it.

                       ALICIA
You can trust me.

                       ANTHONY
      (beat)
It was Nikki.

                       ALICIA
As in your ex, Nikki?

                       ANTHONY
      (nodding)
Yeah.

                       JESSICA
Who's Nikki?

                       ALICIA
Nobody, sweetie.

Then suddenly, Nikki is about to pass by their table when
she notices them:

                       NIKKI
      (smiling)
Oh, hey! This is the second time
we see each other.

                       ANTHONY
      (under his breath)
Oh shit...

                       ALICIA
Hi, I'm Alicia, and you are...?

                       NIKKI
I'm Nikki. Me and Tony used to go
out. Are you his girl?

                       ALICIA
      (showing ring)
Fiancé.

                       NIKKI
      (impressed)
Fiancé, wow! I guess you're not
the boy I used to know, huh Tony?

25.

                       ANTHONY
      (feigns smiling)
Yeah... excuse me, Alicia.

Anthony gets up. He takes Nikki by the arm, and leads her to
the restroom area for some privacy.

                       NIKKI
Tony, what's wrong?

                       ANTHONY
      (whispering)
What're you doing, Nikki? Why are
you following me?

                       NIKKI
      (whispering)
What're you talking about?

                       ANTHONY
      (whispering)
This! You're supposed to be out of
my fucking life for good!

                       NIKKI
      (whispering)
Calm down, Tony --

                       ANTHONY
      (whispering)
Stop calling me that!

                       NIKKI
      (whispering)
Me and my girls just came 'cause
we were hungry. What's wrong with
that?

                       ANTHONY
      (whispering)
The timing, that's one thing.

                       NIKKI
      (whispering)
Well, I did say I wanted to know
how my daughter was.

                       ANTHONY
      (whispering)
Jessica's not your daughter. She's
"my problem", remember that?

26.

                       NIKKI
      (whispering)
C'mon, you're not still holding a
grudge, are you?

                       ANTHONY
      (whispering)
You burned me, Nikki, for six
years. And every time I look at
Jessica, I'm reminded of you!

                       NIKKI
      (whispering)
What do you want me to do?

                       ANTHONY
      (whispering)
Stay the fuck away from me! I
don't ever wanna see you again.
And don't even go near Jessica, or
Alicia, for that matter.

He walks away, while she rolls her eyes at him. Anthony
heads back to his table:

                       ANTHONY
      (to Alicia)
Baby, let's go.

Alicia senses something wrong as she gets Jessica and
follows him out.

EXT. VACANT LOT - NIGHT

Anthony is lying on the hood of his Toyota, looking
contemplative, when Tam-Tam's Chevy pulls into the empty
lot. Tam-Tam, Manny & Alex step out of the car, and walk up
to Anthony.

                       ANTHONY
Nice car, Tam.

                       TAM-TAM
      (smiling)
Sexy, right? It's a sixty-seven
Chevy Impala.

                       ANTHONY
      (disinterested)
That's great...

27.

                       ALEX
Well, we're here, Tony. What's up?

                       ANTHONY
      (sighs)
Nikki's back.

                       MANNY
Nikki, your ex?

                       ANTHONY
Yup.

                       ALEX
Since when?

                       ANTHONY
I don't know.
      (sitting up)
I don't like it, though. She saw
Jessie, and even spoke to Alicia.

                       TAM-TAM
Damn... I can already see this
bitch startin' trouble!

                       ANTHONY
Mmm-hmm. Yo, I'm not even sure if
I still wanna go on this trip now.
I mean, what if she goes to my
house, and starts some shit with
my mom? Or what if she and Alicia
get into a fight over Jessie, and
I'm not around? Then what?

                       ALEX
C'mon, man, Alicia's no punk --
she can handle herself.

                       ANTHONY
That's not the point, Alex.
Nikki's my daughter's biological
mother. If she does anything, she
could get away with it!

                       TAM-TAM
Dawg, don't stress, Alicia'll
handle it. So, don't pull out of
the trip, 'cause I'll kick ya ass!

Anthony, feeling threatened, steps up to Tam-Tam's face.

28.

                       ANTHONY
Go ahead, nigga, make a fuckin'
move! I'm lookin' out for my
family -- I don't give a shit
about a goddamn trip!

Manny & Alex step in to break up the argument:

                       ALEX
Yo, chill, Tony! You know he
didn't mean that.

                       MANNY
Yeah, man. I mean, everything's
set for us; I just bought a
laptop, Tam-Tam's got his new
car...

                       ALEX
Yeah, and I just bought a
shit-load of clothes, man. This
trip is the only chance the four
of us can spend the summer
together -- we need you.

                       ANTHONY
      (beat)
Fine, I'll go. My bad, Tam-Tam.

                       TAM-TAM
      (giving him dap)
Don't worry about it. It's my
fault.

D) Alex is alone in his apartment, with a girl -- presumably
his girlfriend. They stand at the doorway of his bedroom; he

to go into the room. He closes the door behind.

It's early in the morning, and there is a nice pancake feast
on the table as Pablo & Jessica sit and eat. The small
television on the counter is set on a SPANISH TALK SHOW.
Alicia is helping Isabel cook breakfast as Anthony walks in,
carrying his DUFFEL BAG and recording the event with his
camera. He sets his bag down:

POV FROM VIDEO CAMERA

Anthony is recording everything in the kitchen, narrating as
he goes along:

                       ANTHONY (OS)
And now, folks, I bring you to my
kitchen, where we seem to be
having a lovely breakfast.

He moves on to Alicia who is at the counter, beating eggs in
a bowl:

                       ANTHONY (OS)
This young lady is the love of my
life; she is the mother of my son,
and soon to be my bride. Would you
kindly introduce yourself, Miss?

                       ALICIA
      (smiling)
Hi, I'm Alicia.

                       ANTHONY (OS)
And what're you doing, Alicia?

                       ALICIA
Helping your mom cook breakfast
for you.

                       ANTHONY (OS)
      (moving to Isabel)
And what exactly am I having, Mom?

                       ISABEL
Pancakes and eggs.

                       ANTHONY (OS)
Sounds good.

30.

He moves on to Jessica, who's relishing the spotlight now.

                       ANTHONY (OS)
Here, folks, is my beautiful
daughter, Jessica.

                       JESSICA
      (smiling)
Hi!

                       ANTHONY (OS)
Now the audience is wondering,
Jessie, are you gonna miss Daddy
while he's gone?

                       JESSICA
      (smiling)
Mmm-mmm.

                       ANTHONY (OS)
What? And why not?

                       JESSICA
      (smiling)
Because I won't.

                       ANTHONY (OS)
Fine then. And now moving on to
Pablo, my step-dad!

All of Pablo's attention is on the television screen.

                       ANTHONY (OS)
      (continuation)
What are your current thoughts,
Pablo?

                       PABLO
C'mon, get that camera out of my
face, Tony. I'm trying to watch
TV.

                       ANTHONY (OS)
      (sighs)
Okay, fine.

BACK TO SCENE

Anthony turns off the camera, then takes a seat at the
table. Alicia places his food in front of him, then kisses
him on the cheek; she sits next to Anthony.

31.

                       ANTHONY
Thanks for coming, Babe.

                       ALICIA
No problem.

Isabel sits at the table with her food.

                       ISABEL
Are you sure you don't want a
plate, Alicia?

                       ALICIA
No thanks. I'll just eat off of
Tony's.

                       ISABEL
Okay. So, Anthony, I called your
aunt in Miami and she said
everything is ready for you and
the boys.

                       ANTHONY
      (eating)
Cool.

                       ISABEL
Are you sure you'll be okay on the
road?

                       ANTHONY
Ma, I'll be fine. I have enough
money, my cellphone, Manny's got a
laptop -- I'm good!

                       ISABEL
Well, I'm just making sure.

Suddenly, they hear a car HONKING IT'S HORN (OS).

                       ANTHONY
      (recognizing it)
Alright, that's Tam-Tam. I'll see
you guys in a few weeks.

Anthony gets up and kisses Jessica on the forehead:

                       ANTHONY
'Love you, Baby. Be good!

                       ANTHONY
      (handing keys)
Here's the keys to my car. Take
care of Jessie for me.

                       ALICIA
I will. Don't forget to call me.

                       ANTHONY
First call's tonight.

She caresses his cheek before kissing him. The rest of the
boys, try to contain their boyish snickering. Then:

                       ALICIA
I love you.

                       ANTHONY
I love you.

He heads for the Chevy, putting his bag in the trunk. As the
boys get inside the car, Anthony stands outside, thinking
for a beat. Next, he places his camera on the roof of the
car and suddenly RUNS towards Alicia. She laughs as he lifts
her up for a hug then gives her another passionate kiss:

                       TAM-TAM
Tony, will you bring ya
pussy-whipped ass on, man!? We
gotta go!

Anthony gives him the finger while still kissing Alicia.

                       ALICIA
Miss me already?

                       ANTHONY

She instantly attracts Alex's attention as she walks into

Paulo nods understandingly as his mother comes back out.

when I get back.

                       ALICIA
Yeah, me too. When are you getting
back? The suspense is killing me!

                       ANTHONY
      (smiling)
Well, given the pace we're going
at, I'd say about a week and a

half. No more than two weeks.

                       ALICIA
      (smiling)
Damn, babe, you really know how to
torture a girl!

                       ANTHONY
I'll be back before you know it.
You'll see.

                       ALICIA
You better.
      (yawns)
Okay, Tony, I'm going to sleep. I
love you.

                       ANTHONY
      (smiling)
I love you too, sweetie. Sweet
dreams.

                       ALICIA
      (smiling)
Good night.

                       ANTHONY
Good night.

They hang up. Alicia heads back inside her home.

                                         CUT TO:

EXT. MOTEL ROOM

Anthony smiles to himself as he puts his cellphone in his
pocket. He heads into his room.

                                         CUT TO:

INT. MOTEL ROOM

The rest of the boys are inside the room as Anthony walks
in, closing the door behind. There are two beds as Manny
lies on one bed while using his laptop, and Alex lies on the
other while watching the TV; Tam-Tam is also watching TV as
he sits in a nearby chair. Anthony sits on Manny's bed:

                       ANTHONY
What's on?

40.

                       ALEX
Basketball -- Heat versus Magic.

                       TAM-TAM
      (beat)
Yo, what's there to do around
here?

                       ALEX
Tam, we're not even in New York
City, so I doubt there's much.

                       TAM-TAM
Well, shit, Manny, you got a
laptop -- look somethin' up!

                       MANNY
      (looking at screen)
Found something. "GYM Sports Bar",
located on 8th Avenue in New York
City. Says here they got the best
happy hour. Y'all got IDs, right?
'Cause I'm not twenty-one yet.

                       TAM-TAM
Yeah, fake IDs. But, a sports bar
sounds good.
      (to Alex & Anthony)
What y'all think?

                       ANTHONY
I'm down.

                       ALEX
Let's go.

Manny closes his laptop and Alex turns off the television as
they all head out.

                                         CUT TO:

EXT. NEW YORK CITY, TIMES SQUARE - LATER

Tam-Tam's Chevy is cruising through the city that never
sleeps, as the boys take in the sights. Anthony is recording
more footage as they drive through Times Square.

                                         CUT TO:

EXT. GYM SPORTS BAR - MINUTES LATER

The bar has a quaint look and feel to it, as the boys emerge
from the Chevy, which is parked in front. On their way

41.

inside, they pass by a few men whom are standing outside as
they smoke cigarettes and converse among each other.

                                         CUT TO:

INT. GYM SPORTS BAR

GYM Sports Bar is not exactly your average sports bar in the
traditional sense; it's not smoke-filled, with large rowdy
and burly men throughout. As said before, it is very quaint
and friendly. There are POOL TABLES, COUCHES, COFFEE TABLES,
FLAT SCREEN TVs everywhere, and of course, the bar itself,
with friendly bartenders to service you. The boys walk in,
looking around as everyone inside are doing their thing.
However, some can't help but turn and glance at the new
customers. Some looking a bit... lustful. You guessed it,
this is a gay bar.

                       TAM-TAM
      (thinking aloud)
Kind of a sausage-fest, don't you
think?

                       ANTHONY
      (matter-of-fact)
Tam-Tam, this is a sports bar.
What girls do you know come here?

                       TAM-TAM
I'm just sayin'...

                       ALEX
Come on, man. Let's go play some
pool.

Alex, Manny & Tam-Tam head to an empty pool table meanwhile
Anthony heads to the bar and takes a seat. A handsome
bartender named SAM, early-20s, approaches him.

                       SAM
Hey, what can I get ya?

                       ANTHONY
Bud Light, please.

Sam gets a bottle and opens it before handing it to him.
Anthony takes a sip.

                       ANTHONY
Mind putting on a game?

                       SAM
Sure.

42.

Sam picks up the remote control to the flat screen above the
bar. He starts scrolling through channels:

                       SAM
What team?

                       ANTHONY
Uh... how 'bout the Red Sox?

                       SAM
Oooh! Sorry, we don't show Red Sox
games here. Only New York teams.

                       ANTHONY
Damn. Okay, then the Mets.

Sam puts it on a Mets game and places the remote aside.

                       SAM
      (smiling)
Not a Yankees fan?

                       ANTHONY
      (smiling)
Never.

                       SAM
Well, between me and you...
      (whispers)
... neither am I.

They chuckle, then Sam extends his hand:

                       SAM
I'm Sam.

                       ANTHONY
      (shaking hands)
Anthony.

                       SAM (cont'd)
So, Anthony, I take it you're from
Boston?

                       ANTHONY
Yeah.

                       SAM
That's cool. I'm not from here
either.

                       ANTHONY
Really? Where're you from?

43.

                       SAM
Philadelphia.
      (smiling)
And I'm a Phillies fan.

                       ANTHONY
      (chuckles)
Then you must've been happy when
they won the Series.

                       SAM
      (jokingly)
You know, not really. I had money
on the Dodgers that year.

They laugh again.

                                         DISSOLVE TO:

INT. GYM SPORTS BAR - LATER

Anthony is still at the bar, talking to Sam while his
friends are still playing pool, having drunk two beers each.
Manny takes notice of Anthony:

                       MANNY
Yo, Tony hasn't left that bar
since we got here.

Tam-Tam positions himself as he takes the next shot, missing
it.

                       TAM-TAM
He probably made a new friend.

                       MANNY
No, I mean, like, he's been
talking to that dude for a little
too long. Something feels kinda
weird about it.

                       ALEX
Don't worry about it. You're up.

                       MANNY
      (sighs)
All right.

He takes his shot, sinking a ball. Meanwhile, Anthony & Sam
seem to be enjoying their innocent conversation.

44.

                       ANTHONY
... Yeah, so basically, we're just
cruising through states until we
get to Miami. Which is good for me
'cause it gives me a chance to get
some footage for my class.

                       SAM
Oh yeah? What's your major?

                       ANTHONY
      (takes a sip)
Film production. I wanna make
movies.

                       SAM
      (impressed)
Wow, that sounds interesting. I
hope it all works out.

                       ANTHONY
Thanks.

                       SAM
      (beat)
So, listen, my shift ends in about
an hour. What do you say we head
back to my place? I can even give
you a tour of New York along the
way.

Anthony is taken aback by the request. He's not exactly
offended, but his facial expression shows he wants to make
sure he heard what he heard.

                       ANTHONY
Um... I'm sorry?

                       SAM
Well, I think you're kinda cute.
And I don't normally get involved
with people from work.

                       ANTHONY
      (nervous chuckle)
Okay, I know I'm not drunk, but I
swear you were just coming on to
me.

                       SAM
      (smiling)
Guilty as charged.

45.

                       ANTHONY
Wait, are you telling me
you're...?
      (realizing)
Oh! I'm-I'm sorry, Sam, but I'm
not gay. In fact, I'm engaged
even.

                       SAM
      (disappointed)
Oh, well that's too bad. She must
be a lucky girl.

                       ANTHONY
Yeah, I love her a lot. But hey,
thanks for the compliment?
      (beat)
Well, I'm-I'm gonna go before this
gets any more awkward than it
needs to be.

Sam nods and Anthony leaves his beer at the bar as he slowly
gets up and heads over to his friends' pool table. He
approaches them:

                       ANTHONY
      (whispering)
Guys, I think we should go - now.

                       MANNY
Why, what's the problem?

                       ANTHONY
      (whispering)
You brought us to a gay bar, you
dickhead! 'Bartender was just
hittin' on me!

                       ALEX
      (chuckles)
Damn, nigga, you cheatin' on
Alicia already?

                       ANTHONY
      (whispering)
Fuck you, let's go!

                       TAM-TAM
      (whispering)
Yeah, man, if that's the case then
I'm leaving.

46.

                       ALEX
      (sighs)
All right.

They set the pool cues down as they begin to leave. On their
way out, they see various gay couples kissing meanwhile a
disgusted Tam-Tam is approached by one of the GAY PATRONS,
who is clearly invading his personal space.

                       GAY PATRON
Hey, baby, where're you headed?
Can I buy you a drink?

                       TAM-TAM
Fuck no! Get the fuck away from
me, you fruitcake!

                       GAY PATRON
Jeez! You don't have to be so
mean!

The patron leaves. Manny, Anthony & Alex looks at Tam-Tam as
he looks forward -- clearly he's made them look bad.

                       TAM-TAM
What?!

The boys just shake their heads as they continue out.

                                         CUT TO:

EXT. GYM SPORTS BAR

There are a few more patrons standing outside and conversing
when the boys emerge from the building.

                       ANTHONY
Tam, what the hell is your
problem?! That shit was
unnecessary back there!

                       TAM-TAM
I don't care, dawg! I'm not into
that kinda shit!

                       GAY PATRON #2
      (to Tam-Tam)
Hey, where're you boys headed? The
party's just getting started!

47.

                       TAM-TAM
      (flipping him off)
Fuck you, faggot! Mind your own
fuckin' business -- !

                       MANNY
      (shoves him)
Tam, what the fuck!?
      (to patron)
Sorry, sir. He's just had a bad
day.

                       ANTHONY
Tam-Tam, you do that again and I
will knock you the fuck out and
leave you in the gayest part of
the city, butt-naked! Then, we'll
see whose a fag!

As they get into an argument, Alex turns around and notices
two beautiful girls across the street, dressed as if for a
club. Call these two ALANA & KYRA, both in their early-20s.
He jogs over to them:

                       ALEX
      (smiling)
Hey, ladies!

                       ALANA/KYRA
      (smiling)
Hey!

                       ALEX
      (shaking their
       hands)
Hi, I'm alex.

                       KYRA
I'm Kyra, and that's Alana.

                       ALANA
Hi.

                       ALEX
I was just wondering if you two
know of any good clubs around
here? 'See, my friends and I are
staying at a hotel for the night,
and we're just looking for a place
to kick it. You know of any?

48.

                       ALANA
      (smiling)
Why, what happened to GYM Sports?

                       ALEX
      (smiling)
Let's just say there was a little
too much "male bonding" going on
in there, if you get what I'm
saying.

They laugh.

                       KYRA
Well, there's this place we know -
Club Groove. It's a Jazz club near
Washington Square, so I don't know
if...

                       ALEX
Nah, we can do Jazz. Are y'all
heading there now? Can we give you
a ride?

                       ALANA/KYRA
Um... yeah, sure.

                       ALEX
Come on.

Alex leads the girls back across just as his friends finish
arguing.

                       ALEX
      (to the boys)
Yo! This is Kyra, and that's her
friend, Alana.

                       KYRA
      (waving)
Hi.

                       ANTHONY
      (keeping composure)
Hi, I'm Anthony. And that's Manny
& Tam-Tam.

                       TAM-TAM
Hey.

                       ALEX
Alana and Kyra's just invited us
to a jazz club. Shall we go?

49.

                       TAM-TAM
      (shrugs)
Let's.

                       ANTHONY
I call shotgun!

They all get into the Chevy, then drive off.

                                         CUT TO:

INT. CHEVY (MOVING)

Anthony is sitting in the passenger's seat as he films
everything along the ride. Alana sits in between Manny and
Alex, who has Kyra sitting on his lap.

POV FROM VIDEO CAMERA

Anthony focuses the camera on the girls as he narrates:

                       ANTHONY (OS)
Well, we're in the Big Apple, New
York City, hitting up the club
scene. We just came from a bar,
but it turned out to be an
unexpected surprise.

                       MANNY
      (chuckles)
Yeah, Tony found himself a new
boyfriend!

Everyone laughs.

                       ANTHONY (OS)
Fuck you, Manny. Besides, it was
your idea to go there - which
tells me something about you.

                       TAM-TAM
      (smiling)
Yeah, man, ain't it time you came
out of the closet?

They all laugh again:

                       MANNY
Fuck you, Tam! You homophobe!

                       ALANA
Hey, Anthony, what's with the
camera?

50.

                       ANTHONY (OS)
It's a project for my film class.
You don't mind, do you?

                       ALANA
Oh no, that's fine.

She fixes her hair and pouts her lips, making herself pretty
for the camera.

                       ANTHONY (OS)
Oh wow, I guess a camera does
bring out different sides of
people.

Alana smiles at the compliment.

                                         CUT TO:

EXT. CLUB GROOVE - ESTABLISH - LATER

Club Groove, from the looks of it, is a small-looking jazz
bar somewhere between Manhattan and Greenwich Village with
some people entering or exiting the building.

                                         CUT TO:

INT. CLUB GROOVE

The club looks very nice inside as the boys and girls enjoy
their meals and drinks, as well as the live music.

                       TAM-TAM
Yo, this place ain't bad.

                       ALEX
      (to Kyra)
Yeah, thanks for bringing us.

                       KYRA
      (smiling)
You're welcome. 'Glad you like it.

                       ALANA
So, where're you guys from anyway?

                       MANNY
Boston, but we're on a road trip
to Miami.

                       KYRA
Oh yeah, what's in Miami?

51.

                       TAM-TAM
      (shrugs)
Nothin', really. We're just goin'
just to go.

                       KYRA
Then what after that?

                       ALEX
Anthony's wedding. Ain't that
right, Bro?

                       ANTHONY
      (smiling)
Maybe, we haven't decided yet.

                       KYRA
      (surprised)
You're getting married? That's so
sweet. What's her name?

                       ANTHONY
Alicia.

                       ALANA
Can I come to the wedding?

                       TAM-TAM
Hell yeah! Whenever you're in
Boston, look us up.

                       ALANA
      (chuckles)
Okay.

                       KYRA
So, like, what gave you guys the
idea for the trip?

                       ALEX
Well, one night I was telling a
story about my trip to Canada this
year, and all the crazy shit I got
into over there. Then Tam-Tam just
got the idea to go on a road trip
based on that.

                       ALANA
How was your trip to Canada?

52.

                       ALEX
      (smiling)
Oh, it was nuts. Definitely an
experience.

                       KYRA
Where are you guys headed after
here?

                       ANTHONY
I don't know, probably back to the
hotel. Why?

                       KYRA
We should hang out.

                       ALEX
      (smiling)
What? Of course, we've got the
whole night ahead!

                       KYRA
      (smiling)
Sounds good.

Alex and Kyra smile at each other -- an instant attraction
taking place meanwhile Alana glances at Anthony who shyly
looks away.

EXT. SOUTH SHORE PLAZA - ESTABLISH - DAY

It's close to noon as we see one of the well-known malls,
located out in Braintree, Massachusetts. There is an
abundance of cars in the parking lot and several people
around the area.

A female manager in her mid-40s, SHERYL, is walking through
the store with Alicia, who is dressed like the rest of the
employees of the building. They walk past different products
as Sheryl explains everything to Alicia.

                       SHERYL
Well, Alicia, you've done your
training for the past few days, so
I think it's time we put you on
the floor. 'Think you can handle

                       ALICIA
Yeah, I think I can.

                       SHERYL
Good. Now, the mall just opened so
it's gonna be slow for about an
hour or two. I'm gonna place you
where the perfumes are, that way
you'll be the first person the
customers see on their way in.
Just greet them and offer a sample
of the latest products; if they
like it, then see if you can make
a sale. Okay?

                       ALICIA
Sure.

They arrive at an empty PERFUME BOOTH:

                       SHERYL
Well, here we are. If you have any
questions or concerns, just let me
know.

                       ALICIA
      (nodding)
Okay. Thanks, Sheryl.

                       SHERYL
      (smiling)
You're welcome.

Sheryl walks away. Alicia gets inside the booth, setting up
the different PERFUMES on the counter. Moments later, a
MIDDLE-AGED WOMAN passes by:

                       ALICIA
Excuse me, Miss? Would you like to
try this new perfume?

The woman waves her off as she continues on in. Seconds
later, an ELDER MAN enters the store:

                       ALICIA
      (smiling)
Sir, may I show you this new
perfume? It makes a great gift for
the wife.

54.

                       ELDER MAN
      (walking away)
No, thank you.

Alicia sighs, but perks up at the sight of another ELDER
WOMAN walking into the store:

                       ALICIA
      (smiling)
Ma'am, can I interest you in this
brand new perfume? It'll make all
the men go crazy!

                       ELDER WOMAN
      (chuckles)
Sure, Honey.

Alicia looks relieved as the woman approaches her.

The room is near dark as Manny and Anthony are the only ones
asleep inside; we hear loud KNOCKING (OS) at the door. The
knocking persists until it becomes BANGING moments later.
Manny is the one who finally gets up to answer the door. He
finds Alex & Tam-Tam outside, looking gleeful.

                       MANNY
      (sleepily)
Damn, dude, what time is it?

                       TAM-TAM
      (smiling)
Seven o'clock, wake ya ass up!

They walk into the room, closing the door behind. Alex picks
up a pillow and HITS Anthony over the head with it, pissing
him off:

                       ALEX
Tony, wake up!

                       ANTHONY
What the fuck, Alex -- !?

55.

                       ALEX
      (chuckles)
Get up, its time to hit the road!

Anthony slowly sits up in bed, still sleepy.

                       ANTHONY
What time is it?

                       TAM-TAM
      (opening curtains)
Seven!

The sunlight nearly blinds Anthony & Manny when it suddenly
brightens up the room:

                       ANTHONY
      (eyes covered)
Ah shit!
      (tosses pillow)
What the hell, Tam!? Give a
warning next time!

                       TAM-TAM
      (chuckles)
My bad.

                       MANNY
Did y'all niggas even sleep last
night?

                       ALEX
      (smiling)
Shit, we just got back to the
motel!

                       ANTHONY
What'chu mean?

                       TAM-TAM
We spent the night wit' the girls!

                       MANNY
Why am I not surprised?

                       ALEX
You'd be stupid if you were. I
mean, ain't that the point of this
trip - the adventure?

                       MANNY
Well, yeah, but it's also a time
for the four of us to bond.

56.

                       TAM-TAM
      (scoffs)
Shit, well me an' Alana were doin'
a little "bonding" ourselves.

He and Alex share a laugh.

                       ANTHONY
You guys are assholes.

                       ALEX
Hey, well not all of us are
getting married, Tony.

                       ANTHONY
'The fuck that's supposed to mean?

                       TAM-TAM
Don't get us wrong, T, we happy
for you and all, but you decided
to hop on the marriage wagon. Not
us. So, don't get pissed when we
decide to live our lives to the
fullest.

                       ANTHONY
Whatever. I'm hoppin' in the
shower.

Anthony gets up, reaching into his bag for a TOWEL. As he
heads for the bathroom:

                       TAM-TAM
      (re: Alana)
Yo, Tony! For the record... she
was kinda diggin' you.

                       ANTHONY
      (walking away)
Yeah, fuck you too.

Tam-Tam simply smiles at the remark as he turns on the TV.

road, with Anthony filling up the gas tank. Tam-Tam and Alex
are in the back seat, both fast asleep. Anthony watches the
various cars pass on the highway as he waits for the tank to
fill up. As he finishes up, Manny walks out of the mini-mart

with two LARGE BAGS OF FOOD. He approaches the car as
Anthony replaces the nozzle on the gas pump:

                       MANNY
      (to Anthony)
We good to go?

                       ANTHONY
Yeah. What'd you get?

                       MANNY
The good stuff.

                       ANTHONY
You get what I wanted?

                       MANNY
Yeah.

Manny reaches into one of the bags for a VITAMIN WATER then
tosses it to Anthony; they get back inside the car.

                       MANNY
      (to Alex & Tam-Tam)
Yo, dickheads, wake up! I got some
food!

Tam-Tam and Alex slowly get up, they look at the bags:

                       MANNY (cont'd)
I got soda, chips, and snack
cakes. The nachos are mine!

                       TAM-TAM
      (sleepily)
You stingy bastard. I'll take a

                       ALEX
      (sleepily)
Gimme a soda.

Manny hands them the food.

                       TAM-TAM

Damn, how long were we sleeping?

                       MANNY
      (eating nachos)
About two and a half hours.

                       TAM-TAM
      (scoffs)
I'm still tired -- that girl wore
me out!

                       ANTHONY
Yeah, well, we still got a lot of
ground to cover. So go back to
sleep.

                       TAM-TAM
A'ight. Wake me up at the next
stop.

                       ANTHONY
Yeah.

Anthony starts the ignition and drives off.

                       ANTHONY
      (on speakerphone)
We're good. Everybody's sleeping
so I'm at the wheel today.

Tam-Tam slowly opens his eyes, eavesdropping on the
conversation:

                       ALICIA
So, tell me, what'd you guys do
last night? It sounds like you had
a long night.

                       ANTHONY
Oh, well, nothin' special. We went

Tam-Tam simply laughs, waking everyone else.

                       ALICIA
What was that, Tony?

                       ANTHONY
Huh? Oh, nothin', Baby -- Tam's

                       ANTHONY
No, Alicia, it's not like that!
It's...
      (sighs)
'See, what happened was that Manny
took us to a gay bar by mistake
and we didn't know. So, I'm
sittin' at the bar, talking to
this guy, when all of a sudden he
starts hittin' on me.

                       TAM-TAM

                       ANTHONY
No, I didn't -- shut the fuck up,
Tam!!

Alicia laughs at her boyfriend as he defends his sexuality.

                       ALICIA
It's okay, Sweetie, I believe you.
Besides, if you were gay, you'd be

Girl, what'chu talkin' about? You

                       ANTHONY
'Love you too. Bye.

                       NIKKI (OS)
Hey!

Alicia turns as Nikki approaches the car -- an awkward

                       ALICIA

Hi...

                       NIKKI
Alicia, right?

Nah, I just happened to be heading

I don't really care --

                       NIKKI
Well, you should. I mean let's
face it, how well do you really
know your boyfriend? One minute
he's sweet and caring, then the
next, you're getting kicked to the
curb!

                       ALICIA
He said you left him and abandoned

                       ALICIA

Yeah, that'll never happen. Excuse

                       ANTHONY
Yeah... I guess you could say
that. No, you know what?
Everything's good. I got a lot of
footage for my class, and I saw
some interesting things along the
way.

                       ISABEL
Well, I'm happy for you. It sounds
like you're having a lot of fun.

                       ANTHONY
I am. How's things back home? Any
news for me?

                       ISABEL
      (sighs)
We're fine. Pablo went out with
his brother so it's just me and
Jessica here, watching TV. That
staffing agency called for you.

                       ANTHONY
Oh yeah, what they say?

They found a job for you, if you

Thanks, Ma. I'll give them a call

Okay, Anthony. I love you and take

No. Abuela says that I'm a "young

                       ANTHONY
      (chuckles)
Okay, if you say so then. So, are
you ready for your first day of

                       JESSICA
Do I really have to go, Daddy?

while David lays on the bed, entertained. Anna still looks
as pretty as when we last saw her, comfortable in pajamas
when Alicia walks in the room, placing her purse aside. She
looks up:

67.

                       ANNA
Hey, Sis.

                       ALICIA
Hey. Shouldn't you be home?

                       ANNA
Me and William got into a fight,
so I came here for the night.
'Hope you don't mind me using your
computer.

Alicia gestures that she doesn't mind as she sits next to
the baby. She lets out a sigh as she lies down.

                       ANNA
Long day?

                       ALICIA
What? Oh no, it's just...
something happened as I was
leaving work today.

                       ANNA
What?

                       ALICIA
I ran into this girl, Anthony's
ex.

                       ANNA
What's the problem?

                       ALICIA
She's Jessie's mother, and I feel
kinda threatened by her. I mean
today was the second time I've run
into her. The first time was with
Tony, and he felt the same way.

                       ANNA
Well, did she do anything?

                       ALICIA
No, she didn't. She just said that
she wants Jessie back, but I left
before anything else was said or
done.

                       ANNA
Hmm, I didn't know Anthony had
baggage like that. You should let
him know about this.

68.

                       ALICIA
Nah, I don't think I'll be seeing
her again.

                       ANNA
Well, I hope you're right.

                       ISABEL
Nikki? What are you doing here?

I'm fine, thank you.

Wow, it's been a while...

                       ISABEL
Yeah. Yeah, six years to be exact.

                       NIKKI
Well, you look great.

                       ISABEL
What do you want, Nikki?

                       NIKKI
I came to see your son, is he
here?

Nikki makes a move to step inside, but Isabel quickly steps
in her way, blocking her off:

69.

                       ISABEL
Actually, he's not here. He went
to Florida, and he won't be back
for another week.

                       NIKKI
Florida, really? Well, when's he
coming back?

                       ALICIA
Who was that, Isabel?

                       ISABEL
      (sitting down)
Oh, it was just some girl Anthony
used to be with - don't worry
about it.

                       ALICIA
Was it Nikki?

                       ISABEL
How do you know Nikki?

                       ALICIA
I saw her last night. She
approached me outside my job.

                       ISABEL
What did she say?

                       ALICIA
Just a bunch of nonsense, really.

70.

                       ISABEL
No, listen to me, Alicia: Nikki
was a conniving girl when Anthony
was with her. She did a lot of
cruel things to him - you should
not take what she says lightly.

                       ALICIA
I know. But I doubt she'll try
anything with Jessie.

                       ISABEL
Why do you say that?

                       ALICIA
She kinda mentioned that she wants
Jessie back.

                       ISABEL
I'm telling you, be careful! You
don't know what this girl can do,
okay?

                       ALICIA
Okay. Well, I gotta get ready to
pick up Jessie from camp anyway. I
lent my sister the car so she
should be due back any minute.

They hear a car honking it's HORN (OS); Alicia recognizes
the sound and hands David to Isabel:

                       ALICIA
That's Anna now. Here's David and
I'll be right back.

two female counselors, VICKY & JENNIFER, both in their
mid-30s. Vicky notices when Alicia walks into the gym; she
approaches:

                       VICKY
      (smiling)
Hi, I'm Vicky. Can I help you?

                       ALICIA
Hi. I'm here to pick up my
daughter, Jessica Ramos.

                       VICKY
Oh okay, she's sitting at the
bleachers. Jessica!

Jessica looks up, happy to see Alicia. She comes down.

                       VICKY
Jessica was great. She had no

friends.

                       ALICIA
      (smiling)
That's good to hear.

Jessica joins them just as Nikki walks into the gym:

                       VICKY
      (to Nikki)
Can I help you, Miss?

73.

                       NIKKI
Yeah, I'm here to get my daughter.

                       VICKY
Okay, which one would she be -- ?

                       NIKKI
      (points to Jessica)
Her. Come on.

Nikki grabs Jessica by the arm, attempting to take her away
until Alicia pushes her off:

                       ALICIA
Excuse you?! Don't be grabbing her
like that!

                       VICKY
I'm sorry is there something going
on here, that I should know about?

                       NIKKI
Yeah, this girl is my daughter,
and that hoe is trying to steal
her from me!

                       VICKY
Okay, Miss, I'm gonna need you to
lower your voice and refrain from
using foul language. Are you the
legal guardian?

                       NIKKI/ALICIA
Yes!/No!

                       VICKY
Who is the legal guardian?

                       ALICIA
I am! My boyfriend's Jessica's
father, and he's left me in charge
of her while he's on vacation; I
don't even know this woman!

                       NIKKI
Oh yeah? Well, I'm Jessica's
mother! And I'm taking her home!

Jennifer notices the commotion and joins in:

                       JENNIFER
Is there a problem here?

74.

                       VICKY
      (re: Alicia)
Jennifer, this woman here came to
pick up Jessica. But Miss...?

                       NIKKI
Nikki Sandoval.

                       VICKY (cont'd)
Miss Sandoval here claims to be
the legal guardian.

                       JENNIFER
Then, let's just call the father.

                       VICKY
Well, from what I'm told, he's on
vacation.

                       JENNIFER
I see...

                       ALICIA
You know what? Here...

Alicia takes out a LEGAL-LOOKING DOCUMENT from her pocket as
well as her DRIVER'S LICENSE, and hands them to Vicky.

                       ALICIA
That's a copy of the application
my boyfriend and I signed, and
that's my Driver's license. My
name is Alicia Rojas. Take a look.

Vicky looks it over, then:

                       VICKY
      (nodding)
Yeah, I'll accept this. Miss
Sandoval, I'm gonna have to ask
you to leave.

Jennifer begins to escort her out of the gym:

                       NIKKI
What?! No, fuck that!!
      (to Alicia)
Bitch, you just fucked up!! I'm
getting my daughter back, watch!!
Oh, I can't believe this shit!!

                       NIKKI
      (matter-of-fact)
No, do you see her here!? That

Let's just get out of here, before

                       ANNA
What's wrong?

                       ALICIA
      (beat)
You know, Anna, I've dealt with
ex-girlfriends before, but I can't
take this anymore. I mean the one

bonding time with Jessie,
Anthony's ex is trying to ruin
everything!

                       ANNA
What'd she do?

No. I'll do it. Just take us home,
please.

Anna simply nods and begins driving off, while Alicia wipes
away her tears, regaining her composure. Alicia looks up at
Jessica through the rear-view mirror; Jessica smiles at her,
and she simply returns the smile back.

Everything in sight is being recorded:

                       ANTHONY (OS)
      (narrating)
Virginia Beach, from my own
personal experience, is a great
place for tourism. The beach
itself, as you can see, is simply
beautiful here. But the beach
isn't the only attraction; there's
plenty of shops here, as well as
restaurants. Aside from that,
Virginia Beach is the kind of
place where many good things can
happen. Who knows? You might even
find a lover here.

                       ALEX (OS)
Tony!

Anthony whips the camera around as Alex approaches:

                       ANTHONY (OS)
Speaking of lovers.

Yeah, I'm ready.

                       ALEX

They leave the pier.

Alex is at the wheel this time with Anthony in the
passenger's seat, and Tam-Tam & Manny in the back. They have
RAP MUSIC playing on the CD PLAYER as vibe to it.

                       TAM-TAM
Yo, can y'all imagine how hip-hop
would be if 'Pac and Biggie had
never died?

                       ALEX
      (smiling)
Yo, don't even start with that
shit!

                       TAM-TAM
      (smiling)
What? Come on, I'm serious!

                       ANTHONY
If Biggie and 2Pac were alive
today, the East Coast/West Coast
beef would still be alive wit 'em.

                       TAM-TAM
How you figure that?

                       ANTHONY
Easy: 'Pac would still keep it
goin'. I mean, I'm not trying to
say he was ignorant 'cause that
would be a direct insult to the
man, but how many diss tracks did

                       ANTHONY
And how many did Biggie make
towards 'Pac?

                       TAM-TAM
Look, that's not what I'm talkin'
about, though! My point is they
were both good artists. Their
music was ahead of it's time. If
they were still alive, I believe
their music would still be as
good.

                       MANNY
Yeah, but what if they burn-out?

                       TAM-TAM
What do you mean?!

                       ALEX
Think about it, it's the same case
in any genre: LL Cool J put out
ten albums and even then his sales
started droppin'. Or how about
when Eminem sorta peaked after
putting out The Eminem Show? Both
are great artists, in my opinion,
but eventually, they knew when to
quit and move on to other things.

                       TAM-TAM
What's your point?

                       ALEX
My point is that the same would've
happened with 2Pac and Biggie.
Think about it.

                       TAM-TAM
Man, whatever! I still stand by
what I say.

Jessica is lying on her bed watching TV. David is asleep in

deleting words moments after she types them - unable to make
a decision. Clearly Nikki has affected her concentration.
She lets a sigh before grabbing her cellphone and leaving

Um, yeah-yeah. Listen, there's
something I need to tell you.

                       ANTHONY
Okay...
      (lowers music

                       ANTHONY
When?

                       ALICIA
Yesterday, outside my job. And
then again today, when I went to
pick up Jessie from camp.

                       ANTHONY
What happened, did she follow you?

                       ALICIA
I don't know -- I think so. She
even showed up at your house.

                       ANTHONY
What'd she say to you?

                       ALICIA
She wants Jessie back.

                       ANTHONY
How so?

                       ALICIA
She just does; she even tried to
take her from me at the YMCA.

                       ANTHONY
Are you serious?!

                       ALICIA
      (nodding)
Yes. Anthony, I-I don't know what
to do, anymore. I mean, Nikki's
the biological mother -- I...
there's so much I can do without
you here!

                       ANTHONY
Baby, baby, listen to me:
everything's gonna be okay.
Nothing bad is gonna happen, you
hear me? I promise. Just wait
until I get back. Can you do that
for me?

Yes...

                       ANTHONY (cont'd)

you're the mother, and Jessie

stay strong for me, okay? You're
doing good.

                       ALICIA
Okay.

                       ANTHONY
Baby, I love you so much. Nobody -
and I mean nobody - is gonna tear
down what we've built together.
I'll be home soon.

                       ALICIA
I love you, Anthony. Please come
home soon.

                       ANTHONY
I will. Talk to you later.

                       ALICIA
Bye...

Alicia hangs up the phone. She lets out a sigh of relief

                       ALEX
Tony, calm down! What's wrong,
man?

Oh shit, you serious?!

                       TAM-TAM
How'd you find this out?

                       ANTHONY
I'ma kill this fuckin' bitch!!

Anthony rushes for the car, but his friends quickly hold him
back:

                       TAM-TAM
Yo, calm down, a'ight?! Don't
think like that. Besides we're
over five states away from home,
there's nothing you can do
personally, man.

                       MANNY
Tam-Tam's right, Tony. Look, let's
just find a motel for the night,
then you can think over this,
okay?

                       ALEX
Yeah, man, just... I don't know,

Tam-Tam puts an arm around him as they head back to the

                       TAM-TAM
You're gonna be a'ight. Trust me.

neighborhood until Nikki finally breaks the silence:

                       NIKKI
I just wanna see my little girl,
Marisol. To hold her, to talk to
her - is that so wrong of me?

                       MARISOL
No. But, you are going about this
the wrong way, Nikki. I mean,
you're not exactly taking a
peaceful approach.

                       NIKKI
Anthony never gave me a chance.
You know, when I saw him last
summer, I was planning on sitting
down and talking things out with
him. But, he just walked right
past me, ignoring what I had to
say.

                       MARISOL
      (sighs)
Look, I don't know this guy like
you do, but I hate to see you
desperate like this. You know, you
can take him to court.

                       NIKKI
You think that's gonna work?

                       MARISOL
What other choice do you have?
There's this lawyer I know, out in
Jamaica Plain. He's the one who
got my brother off those drug
charges two years ago. Talk to
him, tell him your story, and
he'll take care of the rest.

                       NIKKI
I dunno, though. I mean, yeah, me
and Anthony fucked up and had a
fallin' out... but I don't wanna
do that to him. It does look like
he's a good father.

                       MARISOL
So what? It doesn't matter. If he
was a good father, then he'd let
the mother see her child. Am I
right?

Nikki slowly nods - she knows this is true.

                       NIKKI

Fine. Give me the number.

walls of the room.

POV FROM VIDEO CAMERA

The camera is pointed towards the white ceiling as Anthony
narrates:

                       ANTHONY (OS)
Emptiness. That's what this
ceiling reminds me of, emptiness.
Why? Because it's painted white.
No, I'm not trying to be racist
when I say that, given the fact
that I am a person of color. It's
simply because I once heard that
white is not a color, but the
absence of color.

He points the camera to himself:

                       ANTHONY
Whichever way you want to view it
is none of my concern, really.

The camera is pointed back to the ceiling:

                       ANTHONY (OS)
However, that is not the point I'm
trying to make. As I point the
camera to this colorless ceiling,
how do you, the viewer, feel as
you stare at it. My answer?
Absolutely nothing. I don't even
know what to feel. Earlier this
evening, I'd received news which I
will not discuss, but had made
me... bitter, for lack of a better
word. I let my anger out a long
time ago, but now I don't know
what to feel. Think of this
ceiling as a challenge for
yourself to fill in the blanks.

                       ALEX
Yo, that nigga's been in the

                       MANNY
I'll get him.

Manny heads over to the bathroom, and KNOCKS on the door.

                       MANNY

Anthony opens the door and steps out, with his camera in

He heads for the bed, setting his camera down.

                       MANNY
We're about to head down to the

Yo, you didn't record yourself

Anthony gives him a very serious look for such a stupid

                       ALEX
So, what you gonna do?

                       ANTHONY
I dunno. I think I'll do my

                       ALEX/TAM-TAM
      (taken aback)
Laundry?

                       ANTHONY
Yeah, nigga, laundry! Y'all got a
fuckin' problem with that?!

The boys gesture that they have no problem. Clearly this guy
is not in a good mood.

                       ALEX
A'ight, well I'm-I'ma go swim in
the pool. We'll check ya later.

Anthony waves them off as Alex gets his swim trunks and

Uh, excuse me, Miss?

That's mine.

Oh, I'm sorry. I was lookin'

Oh, naw, it's no big deal. Use it

                       LAUREN
      (smiling)
Okay. I'm Lauren.

I grew up here, but I'm visiting.
I only came to see my sister.

                       ANTHONY
Oh, I'm just passing through with
some friends. We're on a road trip
to Miami.

                       LAUREN
Oh, that's cool. A good way to
spend the summer.

                       ANTHONY
      (sighs)
Yeah, I guess so.

89.

                       LAUREN
      (smiling)
What's wrong with that?

                       ANTHONY
Nothin', it's just... to be
honest, I didn't really wanna
come. But I'm too far from home to
call it quits, you know what I
mean?

                       LAUREN
Yeah, I know how you feel. I felt
the exact same way on my
mid-terms, this semester.

                       ANTHONY
Oh yeah? What school you go to?

                       LAUREN
Miami University. You?

                       ANTHONY
Emerson College.

                       LAUREN
      (grinning)
Let me guess: you're a film major?

                       ANTHONY
      (smiling)
How the hell did you know that?

                       LAUREN
I can see it in your eyes; you got
that artistic look.

                       ANTHONY
      (smiling)
Uh... thanks?

                       LAUREN
It was either that, or pointing
out the fact that your camera's
right there.

She points out his video camera sitting on top of a washer;
they laugh.

                                         CUT TO:

EXT. HOLIDAY INN, SWIMMING POOL

90.

There are 3 very beautiful ladies swimming in the pool, all
of them in their early-20s and with an OPEN COOLER full of
beers nearby. These girls are CANDACE, AMANDA, MELANIE. The
girls are enjoying their time together, drinking when
Tam-Tam, Alex & Manny arrive:

                       ALEX
      (smiling)
How you doin', ladies?

The girls look up:

                       GIRLS
      (smiling)
Hey!

                       ALEX
I'm Alex. And these are my
friends, Manny and Tam-Tam. We
were wondering if we could join
you for a late-night swim?

                       AMANDA
Sure. I'm Amanda, and that's
Candace and Melanie.

The boys drop their towels and get in the water to join the
girls.

                       CANDACE
You boys want a beer?

                       TAM-TAM
Yeah, I'll take one.

                       MANNY
Me too.

Alex moves closer to Amanda, already attracted to her as she
smiles at him.

                       AMANDA
      (softly)
Where're you guys from?

                       ALEX
      (softly)
Boston.

                                         CUT TO:

INT. LAUNDRY ROOM - MINUTES LATER

91.

Back in the laundry room, Anthony and Lauren are laughing as
he shows her some of the footage he's got on his video
camera. What they are watching are pretty much footage from
their stay in New York and Virginia.

                       LAUREN
      (smiling)
Wow, it looks like you got a lot
of footage so far. What's New York
like? I've never been there.

He smiles as he turns off the camera:

                       ANTHONY
It's cool. But it's definitely
something you don't expect.

                       LAUREN
What do you mean?

                       ANTHONY
      (smiling)
I ended up in a gay bar by
accident, where the bartender
tried to take me home with him.

                       LAUREN
      (laughing)
Oh my God, are you serious?

                       ANTHONY
      (smiling)
Hey, I couldn't make that up if I
wanted to.

                       LAUREN
Wow, so what happened next?

                       ANTHONY
Well, I left.
      (chuckles)
I mean, it got awkward for me, so
I just left. The guy was cool and
all, but I just had to leave.
Besides, I'm not gay anyway.
