FADE IN:

INT. EISENHOWER HIGH SCHOOL - ADVANCED PHYSICS - DAY

Mr.Jacobs (50) Overweight, African-American, with greyish
hair, and a handle bar mustache is writing formulas on the
chalk board, The whole class seems confused by his teaching
methods. Kids are seated at tables of two, Ryan Mohammad
(17) is a baby faced, skinny, weak looking teen with strait
shaggy dark hair and horn rimmed glasses. The boy has an
insecure, troubled look of incurable hopelessness in his
eyes. He is seated next to Kelly (17) a beautiful, curvy,
green eyed girl, with golden blonde locks, and gorgeous
dimples that shine.

                       MR. JACOBS
Okay class, here's an easy one for
you. Which terms corresponding to
a given configuration have the
lowest energy?

Kelly and Ryan both raise their hands.

                       MR. JACOBS
Ryan.

                       RYAN
The level with the largest
multiplicity has the lowest
energy?

Kelly quickly throws her hand back in the air.

                       MR. JACOBS
You don't sound so sure. Kelly, do
you agree?

                       KELLY
For a given multiplicity, the
level with the largest value of L
has the lowest energy.

Kelly glances at Ryan sitting next to her and gives a brief
flirtatious smile.

A boy from the back of the room throws a crumbled up piece
of paper hitting Ryan in the back of the head.

KIDS LAUGHING (S.O.)
HAHAHAHHAHA!

2.

Mr. Jacobs stops and points at the boy briefly as if he is
daring the teen to try it again.

The teacher then gives Ryan and Kelly his complete
attention.

                       MR. JACOBS
Actually you're both right,the
level with the largest has the
lowest. Nice job guys. Identical
particals, anyone?

Ryan turns to look at who threw something at him, then
quickly turns back around after making eye contact. Ryan
waits... turns back around noticing the boy still staring
at him.

BELL RINGS! (S.O.)

                       MR. JACOBS (More)
      (YELLING OVER BELL)
NO TWO IDENTICAL FERMIONS CAN HAVE
EXACTLY THE SAME SET OF QUANTUM
NUMBERS PEOPLE! I'LL SEE YOU ALL
TOMORROW.

The class quickly closes their books in relief the long
school day is finally over, everyone exits the classroom.

INT. EISENHOWER HIGH SCHOOL - DAY

This is not a wealthy school by any means, signs and banners
cover the halls, above door frames, and pasted along the
lockers congratulating Tommy "The Phenom" Gibson for his
second State Wrestling Championship in as many years.

The hallway packed tightly with Teenagers, letting out of
class, walking to their lockers, preparing to go home for
the day. Teenagers flow out the exits into the parking lot
to their cars, and buses. Chatting with one another laughing
joking, and telling stories. Tommy Gibson,(18) an African
American muscle bound kid wearing his lettered jacket
proudly covered with Varsity patches and first prize
wrestling medals pinned to the chest.Kids are patting
him on the back, giving him high five, congratulating
him as they pass him at his locker.

With everything going on, classmates make a conscious
effort clear a path as three students walk toward Tommy.
Ryan has his nose buried in a book never noticing the
three teens, innocently bumping into the shortest of the
three. Ryan looks up to apologize.

3.

Ryan tucks his books under his left arm, puts his glasses
back in place, and extends his free hand to greet his fellow
classmates.

                       RYAN
Sorry man. I didn't see you there,
I'm Ryan.

The intimidating boy knocks Ryan's books to the floor, never
stopping on their way to Tommy's locker.

Tommy slams his locker shut, walks through the crowded
hallway and outside the school.

EXT. OUTSIDE SCHOOL - DAY

Tommy walking toward his car, parked directly across the
street. Tommy turns to see Ellery Marrol(17) a extremley
lengthy kid, with athletic build, long blonde goatee, shaved
head, and a sleeveless shirt. Walking along side him is his
two friends Jeremy Sapp and Cash Carlyle both wearing silver
and black fighting wolves dojo T-shirts.

                       TOMMY
      (Nods and smiles)
Ellery, guys.

                       ELLERY
      (antagonizing
       smirk)
Now Tommy, you don't think that
wrestling crap could actually help
you in a real fight?

                       TOMMY
Fight? No, not at all Ellery.

Tommy turns red but his fear holds back his anger.

                       ELLERY
That's not how I see it Tommy.
Everyone patting you on the ass!
It looks to me like you think
you're the big man on campus.

Kids begin to circle around the boys, everyone desperate to
get a peek of the altercation.

                       TOMMY
It's not like that...

4.

                       ELLERY (More)
It looks to me like you have
everyone fooled with your little
wrestling match and your gay
leotards!

Jeremy and Cash stand just behind Ellery sizing up the
crowd, waiting to attack anything that moves.

                       TOMMY
Hey man, I got no problem with
you. What ever I did, I'm sorry.

Ellery leans over and whispers into Tommy's ear.

                       ELLERY
      (whispers)
Scholarship or not, you're still
just another stupid nigger.

Suddenly Tommy shoots for Ellery's legs, Ellery responds
with superior skills by trapping Tom's arm, and digging his
fingers in Tommy's eyes.

Without retracting his hand from Tommy's face, Ellery
smiles at the audience as he slams a palm-heel strike up
into his chin, then rakes his finger nails down the boys
face, Ellery steps behind the wrestler gouging his eyes
and bites the top of his ear, then finishes by stepping
back and shoving Tommy's head against the drivers side
door of his car! Tommy falls to the cement pavement.

The frightened audience is disgusted by Ellerys actions, but
no one dares to speak up.

                       ELLERY
      (Provoking)
PEOPLE, THIS IS YOUR CHAMPION? A
WRESTLER. THERE IS ONLY ONE
CHAMPION AT THIS SCHOOL!

Tommy is on his back holding his ear in pain, trying to stop
the flow of blood. Ellery jumps on top of Tommy, mounting
his legs over the neck and stomach. Ellery secures Tommy's
wrist between his legs and against his chest, leans back
pulling the straitened arm and pushing with his legs until
Tommy's arm snaps from the force of the arm bar.

Ellery tears the medals off Tommy's varsity jacket pocketing
them, then walking off followed by his two friends.

A man in a nearby house watches carefully through his plate
glass window.

5.

Ryan runs to the aid of the stranger, holding him
protectively in his arms, as he lies motionless on his back.

                       RYAN
You're going to be okay, I called
an ambulance.

Ellery looks back at Ryan and grins, the two lock eyes as
the three keep moving to their car.

INT. EISENHOWER HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE - DAY

Office looks like a hobby shop covered in shelves, with wall
to wall Model cars, boats, Motorcycles, and Airplanes.

Principal Brandon Whitley (30's) Sandy brown hair, freckled
faced, coffee stained teeth with braces, wearing a blue
sweater vest, and golden tie sits behind his cherry wood
desk, putting together a plastic model replica car of KITT
from the Knight Rider. Sitting in front of him is Gym
teacher, and wrestling Coach, Mr.Evens (late 40's) Rather
large caucasian, wearing a Baseball cap and jogging sweat
suit, with a whistle hanging from his neck.

Principal Whitley carefully crazy glues a tire onto the
model car.

                       PRINCIPAL WHITLEY
Coach, I don't know what you
expect me to do here. The incident
took place off school grounds,
(pause) I realize Tommy was your
best wrestler, but my hands are
tied. There's just nothing I can
do.

Coach is a bit fidgety, and bothered by not getting the full
attention he believes is deserved.

                       COACH EVENS
Best wrestler? He has a full ride
to U of M next season and he's
sitting in a hospital bed with a
broken arm, fractured skull,and he
can't see out of his left eye!
This kid has more talent then any
wrestler I've ever been around,
and this Ellery boy dismantled him
like a toy! You're not a bit
confused about how?

6.

                       PRINCIPAL WHITLEY
Look Coach, I'm sorry. I have
sixteen...

A teenage girl walks into Principal Whitley's office,
handing him a sheet of paper.

                       PRINCIPAL WHITLEY (cont'd)
Make that seventeen eye witnesses
that all state in their incident
reports Tommy went after Ellery
first. By quote "shooting for his
legs" end quote. And Ellery
defended himself. If Tommy's
parents choose to file a police
report, it would be the only way
Ellery could be punished.

Coach reaches over the desk, grabbing the model car out from
under the Principal's nose, moving it over on the other side
of the desk, demanding attention.

                       COACH EVENS
This boy and his fighting wolves
karate club prey on the weak, and
use fear, intimidation, and
violence to scare the shit out of
every student in this school. Now
he almost kills one and you're
telling me you didn't see this
coming?

                       PRINCIPAL WHITLEY
Yes, if you ask me he went too
far, but in the eyes of the law it
was still self defense.

                       COACH EVENS
Mr. Whitley, do you have any idea
what the number one cause for
suicide is?

Principal Whitley slides open his desk drawer, pulling out a
thermos, and placing it on top of the desk.

                       PRINCIPAL WHITLEY
Depression?

                       COACH EVENS
Yeah depression. And bullies
picking on, and assaulting other
already insecure teenagers causes
depression, and depression leads
            (MORE)

7.

                       COACH EVENS (cont'd)
to suicide or worse!

Whitley unscrews the top, and pours hot soup into the
cup/lid.

                       PRINCIPAL WHITLEY
Worse, Coach?

                       COACH EVENS
Eighty five percent of all school
related shootings is the direct
result of kids being picked on or
bullied. SO YEAH, MUCH WORSE,
COLUMBINE WORSE!

Whitley smiles and takes a sip of his soup.

                       PRINCIPAL WHITLEY
      (Clears throat)

Whitley dumps his soup back into the thermos tightening the
lid firmly.

                       PRINCIPAL WHITLEY
I think you're over reacting
coach. Over my years as acting
Principal I've learned these
things have a way of working
themselves out.

                       COACH EVENS
      (Defiant)
...And that's been what three
whole years now!

                       PRINCIPAL WHITLEY
      (uses authority)
Four now, Coach!

Coach visibly angry springs out of his seat flinging his
chair back under the desk.

                       COACH EVENS
When this happens again, the blood
is on YOUR HANDS NEXT TIME, NOT
MINE!

Coach Evens storms out of the office slamming the door
behind him with all of his might.

INT. EISENHOWER HIGH SCHOOL - HALLWAY - DAY

Ryan hangs his coat in his locker, then buries his face
inside looking for his first period book.

Cash Carlyle (19) a tall, spiky haired kid, wearing a
fighting wolves karate shirt that is too small for his
huge frame, both arms are covered with sleeves of tattoo's.
Jeremy Sapp (17) has a fearsome scowl, bleach blonde hair,
and a swagger of a boy who demands attention. They approach
Ryan's locker.

Ryan shuts his locker door to discover the two boys
hovering over him, He recognizes them from yesterday's
attack immediately.

                       RYAN
Hey guys what up?

                       CASH
You dawg.

Cash reaches for Ryans glasses, Ryan lurches back.

                       RYAN
Me? What do you mean?

                       JEREMY
      (intense/ deranged)
You tell us hero. You're the one
who came running to Tommy's aid
yesterday, like his little BITCH.

Ellery sneaks up behind Ryan pressing his chest
against Ryan's back, nudging him closer to Jeremy.

                       RYAN
Look guys it was nice talking to
you, I'm going to be late for
class so I guess I'll see you
later then.

Ryan tries walking away, Cash steps in front of him knocking
his books to the floor. A crowd begins to form around the
boys.

Cash clinches his fist so tight his knuckes turn white.

                       CASH
Is that what you are, Tommy's
little bitch! Huh dawg?

Jeremy shoves Ryan.

9.

                       JEREMY
      (Infuriated
       lunatic)
HEY! HE'S TALKING TO YOU FAGGOT!

Ryan turns briefly watching Ellery but nervously keeping an
eye on all three.

                       ELLERY
      (Smiling)
Calm down dude, we're all friends
here. The thing I can't seem to
figure out though, is after YOU
called 911, the police showed up
at our houses? That means someone
had to of given them our names.
Now what kind of friend would do
something like that, huh Ryan? YOU
FUCKING CAMEL JOCKEY!

                       RYAN
I don't even know you guys,so how
could I have given them your
names? What ever problems you have
with Tommy is your business, not
mine.

Ryan attemps to walk away but Cash blocks his path.

                       CASH
That's where your wrong SNITCH!
You made it your business when you
called the cops worm!

Cash throws a strait right cross at Ryan's jaw.

Ryan instinctively slips the cross then ducks as Cash throws
a powerful left hook just missing Ryan's head.

Jeremy quickly fires a kick catching him hard to the back of
Ryan's leg just behind the knee, sweeping his feet out from
underneath him.

Coach Evens pushes his way through the crowd, then jumps in
between the three grabbing Cash and Jeremy by the collar.

Ryan lands on his back, the fall knocks the wind out from
him. His head bounces off the floor.

                       COACH EVENS
      (directed at Ryan)
You alright son?

10.

                       RYAN
      (suffering)
I've been better.

                       COACH EVENS
What was that?

                       RYAN
I'll be alright sir, I'm kinda
used to it.

Coach's paws are locked behind the collars of Jeremy and
Cash, pushing them toward the office, Ellery walks just
ahead.

                       COACH EVENS
We'll see what Principal Whitley
has to say about all this, you too
Ellery lets go now!

Ryan picks himself and his books from the floor, then tags a
ways behind.

INT. PRINCIPAL WHITLEY'S OFFICE - DAY

Principal Whitley sits behind his desk, in front of him
sits Ryan Zaluski,a slumped back Cash Carlyle, and noticeably
irritated Jeremy Sapp. Just behind them stands Coach Evens
and Ellery Marrol.

                       PRINCIPAL WHITLEY
So Ryan, what exactly went on
today?

                       RYAN
Nothing sir, this is all just one
big misunderstanding.

                       COACH EVENS
MISUNDERSTANDING? Ryan they were
going to tear you to shreds!

Cash and Jeremy both hold back their obnoxious smirks,

                       ELLERY
Actually Principal Whitley, Ryan
here must have tripped on his shoe
lace or maybe slipped on water
that wasn't properly mopped up,
that's when everyone circled
around us, out of concern for
Ryan's safety. Luckily Jeremy,
Cash and Myself were present to

help him up. That's when Coach
showed up and assaulted Jeremy and
Cash by grabbing them by the back
of the necks.

Coach with a look of sickness and pure disgust, runs his
hand down his face.

                       ELLERY (cont'd)
I'm not (Looks at Coach and
smiles) exactly sure of state
laws, but I don't think he is
allowed to touch a student.
Correct me if I'm wrong Principal
Whitley, but I believe that could
lead to some sort of class action
lawsuit against the board of
education, sir?

                       COACH EVENS
WHAT LIKE YOU ASSAULTED TOMMY! OR
HOW YOU SEEM TO BULLY AND HARASS
GOOD KIDS LIKE RYAN HERE! YOU
DON'T WANT ME TO SHOW YOU ASSAULT,
YOU LITTLE PUNK!

Ellery looks at Coach like he's a joke, and shakes his head.

                       ELLERY
      (Entertained by
       the offer)
I wish you would oldman!

                       PRINCIPAL WHITLEY
Just calm down now Coach, and wait
a second. Lets sort this thing
out. Ryan, Is what Ellery said the
truth?

Folds his hand on his lap, looks over at Ellery then back.

                       RYAN
Yes sir it is.

                       PRINCIPAL WHITLEY
You boys get to class now.

Jeremy, Cash, and Ellery give Coach Evens looks of
amusement, and a pat on the back as they leave the
office. Ryan avoids eye contact as he passes.

Coach Evens shuts the door, and sits down.

12.

                                         CUT TO BEHIND DOOR

Ellery presses his nose against Ryan's intimidating him.

                       ELLERY
      (BEHIND THE DOOR)
Listen you little HOMO, this is
far from over.

Ryan stands confused after bailing Ellery out.

                                         CUT TO OFFICE

Coach Evens removes his hat placing it on the desk, exposing
his bald head.

                       COACH EVENS
All due respect sir. Those kids
are sadistic bastards, who are
amused so easily through kids like
Ryan's torment and pain.

                       PRINCIPAL WHITLEY
      (Beat)
Ryan said...

                       COACH EVENS
      (Beat)
Ryan said that out of fear and
fear alone! To him it's saving his
own ass, nothing more.

Coach puts his hat back on his head, gets up and opens the
door.

                       PRINCIPAL WHITLEY
And Coach, for future notice
please refrain yourself from
touching and threatening any of
the students.

Coach leaves the room.

INT. LUNCHROOM - DAY

Typical lunchroom tables filled with clicks mostly minority
dissent, all mixed in with jocks, cheerleaders, goths,
nerds, preps, heavy metals, criminals, gang members and red
eyed stoner teens all socializing and eating their lunches
together without eating together. Ryan walks over to an
empty table to eat alone, he pulls out his chair and goes to
sit.

13.

Ellery moves the chair out from underneath Ryan, he falls
crashing to the floor, landing painfully hard on his bottom.

The entire lunchroom erupts in laughter as one. Ryan is
humiliated, he looks up at Ellery, Jeremy, and Cash laughing
and pointing at him.

                       ELLERY
Oh sorry about that douche bag, I
didn't realize this seat was
taken.

Ryan stands.

                       RYAN
I can't take this anymore.

                       ELLERY
What chu call me faggot?

Ellery shoves Ryan.

                       ELLERY
      (Loathing)
What you can't take a joke? Tell
you what, we'll see how much you
can take after school terrorist!

                       RYAN
      (low - spirited)
I'm so sick of this shit!

Jeremy heaves a open mustard packet, it sticks to Ryan's
white shirt.

Cash burst out in a ridiculing laugh.

Ryan marches passed other entertained students and exits the
cafeteria, headed for the library to eat in peace and quiet.

INT. LIBRARY - DAY

Ryan sits at a table in the empty library next to a window.

Eating his bagged lunch, staring out the glass, day dreaming
with a look of despair written all over his face.

EXT. OUTSIDE EISENHOWER HIGH SCHOOL - DAY

Ryan exits the school through the empty parking lot,
hitting the long narrow sidewalk that leads several

14.

blocks to his home under bright sunshine, enclosed
by a long brick divider wall to his right, that isolates
the school from half abandoned neighboring crack,
and whore houses of the rugged Detroit community.
He passes telephone pole, after telephone pole with
promotional fight pictures of Ellery and his upcoming
bout stapled to them. A duffel bag hangs over his right
shoulder.

A tricked-out red convertible cruises down the two
lane urban avenue with it's top open, inside sits
Ellery in the passenger seat, Jeremy sits just behind,
with Cash controlling the wheel. The sports car quickly
veers off the point of destination promptly parking a few
yards ahead of Ryan along side the curb.

A man is glaring from directly across the street.

Ellery takes a huge hit from a blunt before stamping it in
the ash tray.

The three boys jump out and surround Ryan.

Ellery exhales the smoke into Ryans face.

                       RYAN
Now what? Everyone knows you can
kick my ass so whats the point?

With scowling eyes as red as the eyes of demons.

                       ELLERY
You just don't get it do you
RETARD! If you would have just
minded your own fucking business,
none of this shit would be
happening, But you had to be the
hero! Well hero, no good deed goes
undone MOTHER FUCKER! And now
you're gonna pay.

Jeremy spits on the side of Ryan's face.

Ryan wipes his face clean with the sleeve of his jacket.

                       JEREMY
      (boiling)
Those were some smooth moves you
displayed in the hallway earlier
geek, NOW IT'S TIME TO TAKE YOUR
BEATING LIKE A MAN!
LETS FIND OUT HOW GOOD YOUR
DEFENSE REALLY IS PUNK!

15.

                       CASH
More like lucky dawg.

                       ELLERY
      (Pissed/Intrigued)
SHUT UP CASH! JEREMY GET'EM!

Jeremy throws a series of combinations.

Ryan ducks and dodges all of them.

Ryan surrenders putting his open hands just above his head.

                       RYAN
Lets just end this, I have some
money you can have it!

Ellery restraining Jeremy by the chest, then pushing him
aside. He cracks his neck, hands at his sides, begins
bouncing on his toes.

                       ELLERY
It's not about money you fucking
arab, it's about respect!

Ellery throws a lightning fast roundhouse kick, followed by
a spinning back fist both landing almost simultaneously to
Ryan's eye, instantly exploding on impact.

Ryan is unconscious before hitting the ground. The Fighting
Wolves congratulate each other, jump back in their car, and
drive off.

Ryan awakes spread out bloodied, beaten, and confused.

He picks his self up and makes his way home.

INT. RYAN'S APARTMENT - NIGHT

Ryan's eye is swollen shut, with a laceration over the same
brow. He is staring at the computer screen with a look of
disbelief, on the screen is a website dedicated to people
who hate Ryan Mohammad. His mother Gail (40) wearing a
waitress uniform and bus pass around her neck, comes in the
door after a long day of work, he quickly turns the monitor
off and sits on the couch, crossing his arms.

Ryan's mom softly places her hands over Ryan's ears.

16.

                       GAIL
      (very concerned)
Oh my baby, what happened to your
face? who did this to you?

Ryan fends off his mothers affection, holding back his
own emotions, trying to scramble away into his bedroom,
his mother steps in front of him blocking the hallway.

                       RYAN
NOTHING MOM, JUST LEAVE ME ALONE!

The strong single mother struggles mightily to keep herself
together.

                       GAIL
You have to tell me the truth, I
need to know what's happening in
your life. Who hurt you?

She grabs His hand, he pulls it away!

                       RYAN
      (Beat)
NOTHING HAPPENED MOM, I FELL!

She paces the floor then heads for the telephone.

                       GAIL
That's it, I'm gonna have a talk
with your principal to make sure
this doesn't happen again.

Picks up the phone begins to turn the rotary...then hangs
up.

                       RYAN
      (Beat)
It's not going to help, it didn't
happen on school grounds.

Starts dialing on the rotary again.

                       GAIL
Then I'll call the police. Just
tell me, who did this to you?

                       RYAN
      (long pause)
It's only going to make things
worse, you don't know these guys.

17.

Hangs up the phone, then rushes to her sons side looking for
the answer.

                       GAIL
I didn't move us away from your
abusive father so you could
continue taking beatings!

Ryan snatches up a picture from the coffee table, breaking
it against a wall, His mother is overwhelmed by his actions.

                       RYAN
IT'S NO DIFFERENT THEN ANY OTHER
PLACE MOM! Sacramento, Seattle,
Columbus, Detroit everywhere we
go. I don't know whats wrong with
me, why can't I ever make any
friends? Everywhere we go it's the
same shit, it's not just dad.
Everyone hates me! They never even
give me a chance! My life sucks,
I'M TIRED OF GETTING MY ASS
KICKED!

Her emotions begin to get the best of her.

                       GAIL
Oh baby, there's nothing wrong
with you?

                       RYAN
      (welling up)
Everyday I wake up go to school,
if you want to call it that, and
deal with the FUCKING loneliness
that surrounds my life, and come
home to nothing, alone, feeling
sorry for myself. I'M PATHETIC!
TELL ME HOW YOU WOULD FEEL WAKING
UP EVERY DAY WISHING IT WOULD BE
YOUR LAST?

Ryan's Mom wraps her loving arms around her son, holding him
like a baby.

                       GAIL
      (crying)
Honey? I had no idea. I'm so, so
sorry! I'll talk to my boss, I'll
make sure I'm home more, we'll
spend more time together. I don't
want you to hurt anymore.

18.

INT. ADVANCED PHYSICS - FRI - DAY

Mr.Jacobs is motionless behind his desk reading a home
and garden magazine. The rest of the class is sitting
quietly taking a quiz, Ryan and Kelly finish early.

Kelly leans over to her right into Ryans ear.

                       KELLY
      (whispering)
So Ryan, what happened to your
eye? It looks painful, does it
hurt?

Ryan embarrassed back by the question, massages the back of
his neck.

                       RYAN
      (whispering/ lie)
It's a funny story actually I was
working on my moms car, you know
the carburetor was acting up. So
I'm wrenching away and the damn
thing slips off the nut, jerks
back and hits me square in the
eye. It's a little sore but I'm
alright.

                       KELLY
      (flirting)
Oh is that all? I thought maybe
someone might have kicked your ass
or something.

SHhhhh.

                       RYAN
No, nope, not me. If there's any
ass kickin' going on it wouldn't
be on me.

A paper airplane hits Ryan in the shoulder.

                       KELLY
So where you from?

Ryan turns to look behind him, but quickly turns back around
when a rather mean looking classmate snarls at him.

                       RYAN
What do you mean like originally
or now? If you mean now I live
just a few ---

19.

She flirtatiously touches Ryans arm.

                       KELLY (chuckles)
      (whispering)
--- I mean originally! Wow not
only cute, but smart too.

                       RYAN
Lost Springs, Wyoming. The
smallest town in America. 2,000
total people!

Ryan begins putting all his school supplies in his trapper
keeper.

                       KELLY
      (delighted)
What like big people small world
or something!

                       RYAN
Yeah? Fourth school in five years,
so it's been a while since I've
been home.

                       KELLY
So why wander the land so much
over the past five years? Are you
and your folks pioneers, on the
run or something?

                       RYAN
      (holds back his
       laughs.)
DAMN! You are extremely nosy, has
anyone ever told you that? Well,
It's me and my mom and we move
where the work is, and because of
the shitty economy the work is
not.

Ryan points at all the school buses parked outside the
window.

                       RYAN
You see that?

Kelly looks real hard outside with a look of uncertainty

                       KELLY
      (Beat)
See what?

20.

                       RYAN
(Laughs) The moving van is out
front waiting for me now!

Kelly playfully smacks his shoulder.

Spit balls hit Ryan in the back of the head, he never
flinches brushing the back of his head with his hand.

BELL RINGS!

Everyone springs up and out of class.

INT. HALLWAY - DAY

Ryan casually turns to his left toward his locker, he spots
The Fighting Wolves. Then turns around and goes in the other
direction.

                       KELLY
Hey did you forget where your
locker is silly?

Keeps a close eye on bullies.

                       RYAN
      (watching close)
Na, No, go ahead, I gotta use the
rest room. I'll catch up with you
later.

INT. LAVATORY - DAY

Ryan hides in locked stall on top of toilet.

Ryan steps down from toilet, unlocks door, opens it, then
goes over to the sink turning on the water, takes his
glasses off his head folding them and putting them in his
shirt pocket. He gets a hand full of water, splashing his
face.

Ryan straightens up and looks directly at his reflection in
the mirror as it stares back.

His reflection is silent and motionless for a few seconds.

Ryans P.O.V. ;

The reflection of himself comes to life and begins screaming
with pure hatred reciting all the negative tauntings that
his less than supportive overbearing abussive father, past,

21.

and present bullies and his own ensecureties of himself have
verbaly branded and emotionally assulted into his suicidal
head over the years of torment.

                       MIRROR
WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU,
YOU'RE SUCH A FUCKING NOBODY
LOSER, LOOK AT YOU, YOU'RE A

HEAD!

Ryan falls to his knees, realizes he is having a nervous
breakdown.

He begins crying hysterically.

Minutes pass before he starts gathering some composure.

Ryan wipes away the tears, looks at his wrist watch, opens
the main door, peeking his head out, the hallways are empty.

INT. RYAN'S LOCKER - DAY

Ryan opens his locker completely cleaning it out, putting
all his papers and pencils in his duffel bag, and all six
books under his left arm.

He puts his glasses back on his face, slams the door shut
and cautiously departs the building.

EXT. OUTSIDE SCHOOL - FRI - DAY

Ryan begins to make his way home on the sidewalk along the
brick wall when he spots Cash's tricked-out red convertible
against the curb, Ellery, Cash and Jeremy are taking turns
swigging from a liquor bottle.

Ryan quivers as he approaches the car, keeping his distance,
and a careful eye on all three boys as he pretends to pass
without seeing them.

The drunken wolves climb out of the open convertible top.

22.

Cash knocks all six of Ryan's books to the dirt.

                       CASH
If it aint the rat.

Jeremy takes a hit off his cigarette, then flicks it hitting
Ryan in the face.

Ryan in a state of panic, and terror - stricken dashes off
into a sprint, Jeremy gives chase tackling him from behind,
forcefully picking the frightened boy up from the cement,
then shoving him into Cash, who holds him up firmly around
the back of the neck.

                       ELLERY
      (sinister smile)
HEY TOWEL HEAD, YOU MISS ME!

                       JEREMY
      (hysterical)
ENOUGH WITH THE BULLSHIT ELLERY!

Jeremy grabs the distressed boy by the hair.

                       JEREMY
      (raging)
I'M GONNA FUCKING KILL YOU, YOU
BITCH ASS MOTHER FUCKER!

Jeremy side kicks Ryan in the stomach, then dances on his
toes.

                       RYAN
      (SCREAMS IN PAIN)
AWWW!

Ellery leans his face arrogantly down level with Ryan's
panicked face.

                       ELLERY
What was that osama? You want
more, no problem bro!

Ellery throws a lightning fast high kick to Ryan's jaw, his
head snaps back hard, knocking his glasses off his face, his
body goes limp, but Cash holds him up.

Jeremy fires multiple times with uppercuts landing solidly
to Ryan's rib cage.

His face wet with tears, a webbing of saliva, and blood
between his lips, and open mouth as he gasp for air.

23.

A thick ribbon of blood falling from his mouth.

Cash lets him drop, Ryan curls up into a ball finding no
comfort on the ground while the three boys unload powerful
kicks to his body, his head is pitched between the cement
and viscous stomps.

                       CASH
You aint shit, now are ya' dawg!

                       RYAN
      (crying)
PLEASE STOP! I'M SORRY, I'M SORRY,
I'M SORRY, I'M SORRY!

A Caucasian man, fourtyish, thicknecked, broken-nosed,
muscular, with massive arms, dark hair, and an expression
of absolute murder comes high tailing it from across the
street holding a wooden baseball bat, wildly swooping it,
hitting Cash in the arm. The boys retreat to their car,
and quickly flee the scene.

                       ELLERY
      (DRIVING OFF)
LATER HOMO!

The Man drops the bat, and squats to his knees helping Ryan.

                       MAN
HEY KID, CAN YOU HEAR ME? YOU
ALRIGHT?

                       RYAN
AWW shit, yeah I'm alright.

                       MAN
Can you move? can you get up?

                       RYAN
I think so?

The man assist Ryan to his feet, then crouches down,
grabbing his dirty glasses, offering them to him.

Ryan puts them on his face.

The man picks up all of Ryan's books volunteering half.

                       RYAN
I guess it's my own fault for not
finding another way home.

24.

                       MAN
No, it's not your fault. You live
far from here? I'll help you with
your books.

                       RYAN
      (huge smile)
No, a couple blocks, maybe.

                       JIM
So you got a name kid? I'm Jim.

Jim puts out his hand to shake. Ryan has a look of gratitude
written all over his face.

                       RYAN
      (genuine)
I'm Ryan. Thanks for everything,
those guys just won't quit? I
don't even know what I did to them
to deserve this every day.

They shake hands.

Jim is what you call an old-school, take no shit kind
of guy; He is well known in the community and gets along
with just about everyone he meets. He can never turn it
off always illustrating his point, lecturing and teaching
is his greatest passion.

                       JIM
      (Confused, has
       never seen such a
       look in someones
       eyes)
No one deserves to be treated like
that. You know something kid, it's
time you stand up for yourself and
fight back. I've been watching you
over the past month and I gotta
tell you, your defense is good, as
good as I've seen. You got a back
ground in fighting?

Ryan becomes a bit jittery.

                       RYAN
Thanks I think?(embarrassed) You
see my dad, he used to hit on me
and my mom, A LOT! After a while,
I just developed a tolerance for
pain, then It got to the point
where I pretty much could see the
shot coming before it ever even
            (MORE)

25.

                       RYAN (cont'd)
got to me. Every school I've been,
I always end up someones target? I
figured if they can't hit me, they
will grow tired of trying. But
that Ellery kid is different, he
has like supernatural speed or
something, I can't read him?

The two walk the endless sidewalk on the way to Ryan's home.

                       JIM
Look Ryan, I've been training
fighters on and off for 20 years
and those things you just
mentioned are the only two things
you can't teach. That's all god
given, you can't teach god given
ability.

Ryan stops to tie his shoe lace.

                       RYAN
      (looks up at Jim)
What do you mean, getting my ass
whipped?

                       JIM
No,The exact opposite. Look here,
I can teach a kid like Ellery to
be the best offensive fighter in
the world right, but if he can't
take or dodge a punch the fight
will be over before it even
starts. That's why they call it
self-DEFENSE and not self-
OFFENSE! Get it?

Ryan stands, and takes his house key out of his pocket.

                       RYAN
I think so. Well this is it, my
apartment. It was really nice to
meet you Jim. And thanks.

Ryan unlocks and opens his front door.

                       JIM

                       RYAN
I'd say, where do I sign!

                       JIM
Take a day or two, think about it.
Talk it over with your mother, let
me know.

Ryan goes into his apartment shutting the door behind him,
Jim makes his way back home.

Ryan opens the door, admiring the man for a few seconds,
then goes back into his apartment.

EXT. RYAN'S APARTMENT - AM - DAY

Sun rays beat down melting the early morning layer of frost
that covers the grass. Buses and cars pass by the government
fixed income apartments filled with kids all on the same
route to school.

Ryan shuts, and locks his front door, and reluctantly heads
down the side walk to school.

A red tricked-out convertible sports car speeds by at
dangerous a speed, suddenly the tail lights flash red,
and the car comes to a complete halt.

                       RYAN
      (vanquished)
Fuck me! Not now!

The reverse lights come on, and the car drifts closer.

Cash puts the shifter in park, and the three get out with
their hands hidden behind their backs.

                       ELLERY
What's up sand nigger. About the
other day, maybe we laid it on a
little thick huh?

Jeremy flares his nostrils with a psychotic look on his
face.

                       CASH
Yeah no hard feelings dawg?
(smiles) I'll bet you were pretty
pissed huh?

                       RYAN
Um no?

                       ELLERY
YOU ARE NOW PISS ANT!

The three boys laugh as they pelt Ryan with water balloons.

                       JEREMY
      (mental)
Uhg! FUCK YOU COCKSUCKER!

Ryan puts his open hands up shielding his face.

The bullies jump back in the car and drive off with
expressions of pride on their faces. Ryan continues
walking miserable to school in the chilling air soaking
wet.

INT. PHYSICAL EDUCATION - GYM - DAY

There is a full basketball court with rims on each side
of the gym, to the left are girls shooting around and
socializing with other girls, next to them are a few
playing a game of H.O.R.S.E with Coach Evens. Across
the gym are the boys playing a three on three half court
pick up game.

Ryan is standing off to the side wearing elastic polyester
shorts and a T-shirt, waiting alone and patiently for his
turn to play.

Jeremy and some other kids wearing the same elastic
polyester shorts, and Fighting Wolves Karate T-shirts
are sitting on the bleachers laughing, joking with
each other.

                       JEREMY
      (Ruthless)
HEY PISS ANT, how did you like the
piss filled balloons this morning.

                       JEREMY
      (crazed)
HEY I'M TALKING TO YOU QUEER!

A blue Ryan pretends to ignore them, walking further away.

Jeremy slowly approaches Ryan from behind, pulling his
shorts and underwear to his ankles, fully exposing Ryan's
penis and testicles.

Jeremy puts his right index and baby finger in his mouth
blowing an extremely loud whistle, grabbing the attention
of the entire class.

ENTIRE CLASS LAUGHS AND POINTS
HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAA!

Ryan in a state of panic pulls his shorts back up, he
runs off to the locker room embarrassed and crying.

                       COACH EVENS
JEREMY! TAKE YOUR ASS TO THE
PRINCIPALS OFFICE NOW!

Unnerving silence fills the gym.

Jeremy swaggers out of the gym with a stutter step and a
smile, Coach Evens walks into the locker room to check on
Ryan.

Ryan is dressing.

What? bright side, what could you
possibly find good in him

INT. PRINCIPAL WHITLEY'S OFFICE - DAY

Principal Whitley hunkered behind his desk, Jeremy
stooped down in a chair, chewing on a pen, seated
next to Coach Evens.

                       PRINCIPAL WHITLEY
This is turning into a serious
recurrence Jeremy. Coach, how do
you suggest we handle this?

                       COACH EVENS
Expulsion for starters if it
continues.

Jeremy jumps out of his seat pointing at Coach Evens.

                       JEREMY

in rage.

Fine, for now. I want you to
understand that children who are
bullied at school, are 4x more
likely to show psychotic symptoms.
They don't develop the same coping
skills as other kids, resulting in
murder, suicide, and god knows
what else.

Ryan sits at a table alone eating his home prepared lunch
from a brown paper sack, and hastily scribbles in a note
pad.

Kelly blissfully drifts into the library, headed toward Ryan
with a smile.

                       RYAN

She plops down in a chair on the other side of Ryan's
table, putting her books down next to his bagged meal.

Yeah, you know long day. Kinda

Takes a bite of his Peanut butter and Jelly sandwich.

library. You should try being like

day?

Flirtatiously touches his hand.

There's something different about
you today. If I didn't know any
better I'd say you almost look
happy, you're glowing, or blushing
one.

Ryan turns beet red with embarrassment.

                       RYAN
Blushing, sorry I don't blush.
It's definitely a glow. I'm
glowing because I'm pregnant. You
know how they always say pregnancy
makes you glow? Well I'm pregnant.

                       KELLY
      (giggles a bit)
Yah,Yah,Yah, I got it. I didn't
realize you had such a sense of
humor.

                       RYAN
Actually I have eleven different
senses, Not just humor.

                       KELLY
      (serious/confident)
WOW! Two in a row, I'm impressed.
In case it's ever on a test, I
know you wouldn't want to get ONE
wrong sweetie, God knows what it
could do to the G.P.A., there are
only five senses.

34.

                       RYAN
Sorry but there are eleven, what
do you want to bet?

                       KELLY
Hmmm. How about dinner?

Awkward silence.

Ryan nervously adjust his glasses.

                       RYAN
Dinner? Wow, yah, okay dinner
sounds great!

                       KELLY
Slow down Romeo, you have to name
eleven senses first. Oh and Ryan,
no pressure.

                       RYAN
Sight is obvious visual.
Hearing, again obvious auditory.
Smell, olfactory sense.
Taste, gustatory sense.
Touch, the skin sense.

Kelly bats her eyelashes and grins.

                       KELLY
OK, THAT'S FIVE I WIN!

                       RYAN
Let me finish, you didn't let me
finish. Because touch involves
four different nerves, the skin
senses are considered four
different senses.
heat.
cold.
pressure.
pain.
Then you have motion, which is
kinesthetic.
Last but not least, the eleventh
sense is, drum roll please!
balance which is a vestibular
sense.

Kelly pretends to yawn.

35.

                       KELLY
WOW! I'll call 411 and tell them
you have some interesting
information.

Kelly takes out a pen, grabs Ryan's open hand, writing on
it.

                       RYAN
What's this?

                       KELLY
It's my address, and my phone
number in case you get lost. Don't
be late nine o'clock tonight, my
house dinner with my parents.

                       RYAN
Tonight? Your parents?

                       KELLY
Yeah, my dad won't let me go out
with any boys without meeting them
first. It's a total drag, but
you'll do fine.

Kelly gets up and makes her way out of the library.

                       RYAN
WHAT DO YOU MEAN DO FINE? DO FINE?
WHAT LIKE AN INTERVIEW?

Kelly waves and smiles as she exits the library.

Ryan crumbles up his lunch bag and shoots it like a
basketball at the trash can.

He misses.

                       RYAN
WHOOOHOOOO!

EXT. JIM'S HOUSE - DAY

The screen door hangs open bolted on by the top hinge
alone. The cement steps crumble as Ryan makes his way
up, Ryan hesitates looking around at the practically
condemned looking home. Ryan takes a deep breath then
knocks on the door.

36.

Jim answers wearing a pair of traditional white colored
karate pants and a 1989 Detroit Bad Boys T-shirt.

                       RYAN
Hey Jim.

Jim takes a swig from his can of Miller lite.

                       JIM
What's up kid?

                       RYAN
I thought a lot about your
question, talked it over with my
ma, and if your offer still stands
I'd love to learn how to defend
myself. That is if you're still
offering sir.

                       JIM
Yeah of course kid, come on in.

Jim opens the door fully and lets Ryan in his home.

INT. JIM'S LIVING ROOM - DAY

A huge T.V. sits on a wooden entertainment center, littered
with old papers, unwashed clothing, plastic plates and cups.
In front of it is a blue leather recliner and a side table
with a remote on top. An accumulation of garbage, trash,
unclean bedding and filth covered the floor. The kitchen
sink filled with dirty dishes,a coating of coffee grounds
spread over the counter tops making them invisible, and
empty pizza boxes were stacked to the ceiling.

Ryan walks around the room inspecting everything.

                       RYAN
WOW! This is disgusting! Do you
even bother shitting in the
toilet, or anywhere near the
bathroom for that matter?

Ryan picks up a Playboy magazine from the ground and opens
it.

                       JIM
Yeah well, I just fired the maid
kid.

Jim snatches the Playboy magazine from Ryan tossing it back
on the floor.

37.

                       RYAN
You sure she's not lying dead over
in the corner of your living room,
underneath all this garbage
somewhere?

A dog makes it way over to Jim's side.

                       RYAN
Holy shit! It's the worlds biggest
rat.

Jim scratches the dogs head.

                       JIM
You're charming kid, I can't begin
to imagine why someone would want
to kick your ass everyday.

                       RYAN
Yeah well if they kill me, what
ever you do don't bury me here.
This is too unsanitary for even
the dead. Your poor maid never had
a chance.

Ryan puts his hands deep into his pocket, with his shoulders
shrugged high.

Ryan follows behind down the basement steps.

INT. JIM'S GYM - DAY

The basement is immaculate, with weights stacked neatly by
the benches on stands, heavy bags hang from the rafters,
speed bags bolted to the walls, double end bags connected
to the cement floor and overhead beams, medicine balls of
all sizes on the floor, jump ropes hanging from hooks,
gloves, headgear, pads on shelves, mats for wrestling
perfectly rolled lie in the corner, Wing Chung Dummy
at the far end of room, and a giant rings complements
the center of the gym.

Pictures hang everywhere of Ellery and Jim together at
tournaments and various other locations.

                       RYAN
What the hell are all these
pictures?

Ryan continues to move around the work out area gazing in
skeptism, he adjust his glasses waiting for Ellery to pop
out of the shadows and attack him as one big conspiracy
plot.

                       JIM
Ellery had more potential than any
kid I ever trained, we won
hundreds of tournaments, he is a
five time, full contact National
Karate Champion.--

Ryan pacing the floors studying each photo on the walls
looking terrified finally fully understanding what big
trouble he has gotten himself into.

                       JIM
Martial Arts Magazine had him
ranked as the #1 under age fighter
in the world! We were on our way
to the Olympics kid, then he
snapped, assaulting a referee. And

                       JIM (cont'd)
that was that! He was banned from
competition for life, and earned
his nickname "KARATE'S BAD BOY".

Ryan can't believe what he is hearing, he begins massaging
that back of his own neck nervously.

                       RYAN
So you trained this Barbarian?

Jim takes a black and white photo of a Vietnamese man in a
fighting stance, wearing a Karate Gi off the wall.

                       JIM
      (studies the photo)
Lets get something strait kid, I
taught the boy Cuong Nhu Karate
and the same true values my
teacher O-Sensei Ngo Dong taught
me about it's philosophies and
history.

Hands the photo of his teacher to Ryan with a look of pride.

                       JIM
Ellery decided to strike that
referee on his own! He not only
embarrassed himself, he
embarrassed Cuong Nhu Oriental
Martial Arts as well. His actions
reflected on my teaching that day,
and I don't teach that shit!

Ryan looks at the photo and peeks back at Jim who has
a mixed expression of loyalty & betrayal on his face.
Convincing Ryan, his intentions are genuine.

                       RYAN
So what happened, you quit
training him after that?

Ryan looks at the photo long and hard before putting it back
on the wall.

                       JIM
No, he still came for lessons
everyday, then after a while he
disappeared. Later I learned he
trains at The Fighting Wolves MMA
gym, and competes in the cage.

40.

Ryan shakes his head as he advances past what seems to be a
museum or shrine of memories for Jim, studying each one with
his eyes.

                       RYAN
And let me guess, you disapprove
because it goes against the self
defense rule, morals, and meaning
of Karate?

                       JIM
No kid, the disrespectful little
asshole never asked.

                       RYAN
He's a first class savage asshole
all the way!

Jim claps his hands together.

                       JIM
You ready to train now kid? I mean
now that you've seen the pictures
have you said your peace?

Ryan nods.

Jim starts to take a step, stops and turns to Ryan.

                       JIM
I'm gonna tell you strait out kid,
you better not quit on me! If I'm
gonna take the time to train you,
you better not quit until I tell
you to quit or that buzzer sounds.
You understand?

                       RYAN
Yes sir.

                       JIM
Cause you have a look in your eyes
that says you've already given
up... or your dog died, Not sure
which of the two it is yet, But
it's one of the two. Your dog die
kid?

Jim slips off his slippers.

Ryan leans down unties his shoes, taking his socks off and
putting them balled up into the shoes. Placing his glasses
next to his shoes.

41.

                       RYAN
No sir. Never had a dog, had a cat
once but I was allergic so --

Jim makes his way over to the jump ropes grabbing two.

                       JIM
      (Not interested)
-- That's Good kid, grab the jump
rope. Jumping rope will be an
everyday activity. It's a great
cardiovascular work out and helps
with foot work, reflexes, speed,
defense, and reaction. Second, no
more walking to and from school. I
want you to jog, then run, then
sprint. You're gonna have to put
in the road work.- Got it kid?

                       RYAN
No problem.

                                         CUT TO JUMP ROPES

Jim hands Ryan a rope and begins, slow and sloppy often
hitting his ankles. Ryans feet grow heavy.

                       JIM
O'Sensei used to run 100mile
marathons.

                       RYAN
You're kidding me?

                       JIM
No, (smiles) he always said
besides building massive stamina,
if he ever needed to run, nobody
would ever last long enough to
catch him.

Ryan smiles and playfully puts his hand on Jims back.

                       RYAN
Sounds like a brilliant man.

                       JIM
      (Chuckles)

Jim skips with his own rope whizzing around him the flow of
it whirling around him sounds like a hive of bees.

42.

                       JIM
      (Jumping rope)
PHYSICALLY WE TRAIN TOGETHER,
MENTALLY AND INTELLECTUALLY WE
THINK TOGETHER, EVENTUALLY WE
LEARN, SHARE, AND GROW TOGETHER,
THEN WE WIN OR LOSE TOGETHER. YOU
GOT IT KID?

Ryan skips the rope one or twice around before having to
start over again.

Fatigue overwhelms him, he takes a deep breath and continues
training.

                       RYAN
      (heavy breathing)
Yes sir.

Jim is skipping rope at a whirl wind speed while looking to
his left at a struggling Ryan.

                       JIM
WE DO THINGS AS A TEAM, A FIGHTER
DOESN'T LISTEN TO HIS TEAM WHEN
HE'S IN THAT CAGE, IT COULD BECOME
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A KNOCK OUT
AND BEING KNOCKED OUT. YOU GOT IT
KID?

                       RYAN
      (panting)
Yes sir.

                                         15 MINUTES PASS

Ryan desperately gasp for wind...he slowly catches his
breath.

                       JIM
GOOD. NOW SLOW YOUR SPEED FOR 30
SECONDS, GET A DRINK, AND WE'LL
WORK ON LATERAL MOVEMENT AROUND
THE RING FOR THREE FIVE MINUTE
ROUNDS, WITH ONE MINUTE BREAKS IN
BETWEEN ROUNDS!

They get a drink and move on to the ring.

                                         CUT TO RING

Jim resets the timer, begins to demonstrate. Ryan proceeds
to do as he's told.

43.

                       JIM
      (demonstrates)
Okay kid, follow me. You want to
circle the ring never crossing
your legs like this, pace yourself
always look forward, and keep your
hands up.

Jim elegantly circles the ring on his toes, Ryan drenched
in sweat, he struggles slowly behind, legs quivering, and
gasping for air.

                       JIM
When I say switch, we go in the
other direction never criss -
crossing your legs. AND STOP
BREATHING WITH YOUR MOUTH WIDE
OPEN! You'll get your jaw broke
breathing like that.--

Jim steps in front of Ryan and playfully smacks him on the
side of his open jaw.

                       JIM
--Everything in and out of your
nose. And when you throw a punch
or a kick exhale out of your nose
at the same time.--

Jim throws another playful smack to Ryans gut.

                       JIM
      (Smiles keeps
       demonstrating)
--That'll help in case you miss
and your opponent catches you in
the body. You getting all this
kid?

                       RYAN
      (BREATHING HEAVY)
MmHmmm.

Ryan is dragging his legs practically falling over his own
feet, just trying to keep up.

                       JIM
OKAY SWITCH! REMEMBER, YOU WILL BE
PERFECT IN EVERY ASPECT OF THE
FIGHT, ONLY IF YOU LISTEN TO YOUR
TEAM. GOT IT KID?

                                         HORN SOUNDS

44.

                       RYAN
      (rantic panting)
Aah Huh.

They stop the exercise, Ryan sits, then Lie's on his back.

                       JIM
AND TIME!-

                       JIM
So what's it like inside school,
they pick on you there too?

Leaning back on his elbows.

                       RYAN
Same thing, I'm a social out cast
who hides all day, and eats lunch
alone in the library.

Jim offers up a friendly smile.

                       JIM
It can't be that bad, you said you
got a date right?

                       RYAN
Besides you, she's the first
friend I've made in the past Oh
two years?

Jim climbs out of the ring grabbing a couple of water
bottles. He climbs back in, handing one to Ryan.

                       JIM
Kid, You're not alone. I got a
story for ya. Their was a boy who
had his bike stolen at an early
age, and was tired of being
bullied. So like you, this boy
decided to learn how to defend
himself. You have any idea who
this boy was kid?

                       RYAN
Was it you Jim? Is the little boy
in the story you?

Takes a drink, then sprays himself in the face.

45.

                       JIM
NO IT WASN'T ME KID, IT WAS
MOHAMMAD ALI. THE GREATEST BOXER
OF ALL TIME! EVEN HE WAS BULLIED.

That name grabs Ryans attention.

                       RYAN
What happened to the bully?

                       JIM
EXACTLY, that's exactly my point.
No one knows or gives a shit what
happened to the bully, but
everyone knows what happened to
Ali.

                       RYAN
Yeah, he got hit in the head so
many times he can't speak.

Jim stands putting his hand out, then helping Ryan to his
feet.

                       JIM
You gotta learn to cheer up!
You're depressing the shit out of
me! Happiness isn't by chance,
it's by choice. Now if the pity
party is over, I'll show you some
basics.

Ryan climbs out and puts the jump ropes back on their hooks.

                                         CUT TO MIRROR

Ryan watching in mirror follows every direction.

Mimics Jim's every move.

                       JIM
      (demonstrates)
Come over here to the mirror, get
in your stance. Okay open your
legs a little more.

Jim kicks the insides of Ryans feet spreading out his
stance.

                       JIM
Good! Now stay on your toes, it
will give your body more leverage
to shift, and balance your weight.
Balance is the most important
            (MORE)

46.

                       JIM (cont'd)
thing. You don't have balance
kid--

Jim using two fingers pushing Ryan back a few steps.

                       JIM
      (Smiles keeps
       demonstrating)
--Forget about defense, I can push
you over. Good! Bend your knees a
bit.

Jim walks behind Ryan pushing down on his shoulders to help
Ryan bend his knees.

                       JIM
      (demonstrates)
Good! Now put your hands up, keep
your chin glued to your chest, and
your right hand glued to your jaw.
Good! Now tuck your elbows in.
Good! That's to protect your body.
Now show me a jab.

Ryan throws a effective jab.

                       RYAN
Like this?

                       JIM
Good! Again.

Another crisp jab.

The two work hard step by step in the mirror.

                       JIM (cont'd)
      (demonstrates)
Good! Twist your wrist and snap
the jab at the end of the
delivery, like this. Loosen up
until the point of impact, then
shift all your weight in your
extension and step into it. Good!
Now, let your back leg follow the
rest of your body kid. Good! This
is your most important punch in
fighting. It gives you distance,
time to think, react, and set up
your next shot. Try again, this
time double it up.

47.

Fires effective double snapping jabs.

                       JIM
Good! Now jab, strait right kid.

Ryan throws effective jab followed by a sloppy right.

Ryan has a hard time getting it right.

                       JIM
      (demonstrates)
NO! NO! Strait out. Watch me. 1
bang!, bring it back, 2 bang!,
bring it back. Keep the chin
tucked, legs loose, bring your
hands back glued to your jaw. See
bang, bang!

Jim gives example in slow perfect motions

Ryan studies Jim's every move.

Ryan pivots and moves then throws an effective combination.
They both smile.

                       JIM
Good kid, Good! Shifting your
weight means everything kid. What
do you weigh?...

                       RYAN
Around 180?

                       JIM
Around 180. Imagine if I threw a
180 pound dumbbell as fast as I
could at your head. What would
happen? - It would knock the shit
out of ya' right, Right?

Ryan wipes his wet face dry with his shirt.

                       RYAN
YEAH, of course.

                       JIM
Well by learning how to shift your
weight, and controlling it, you
can deliver a 160 pound fist
behind every shot kid. You follow?

                       RYAN
law of physics.

48.

Jim points at the buzzer, on his way to a stool.

                       JIM
Yes it is. Now practice for three
rounds in the mirror. YOU DON'T
STOP UNTIL THAT BUZZER RINGS ALL
THREE ROUNDS OR I TELL YOU TO
STOP! YOU GOT IT KID?

                       RYAN
Yep, no problem.

Ryan intensely practices in mirror.

                                         BUZZER 3RD TIME.

                       JIM
AND TIME!

Ryan picks up his arm, glancing at his wrist watch.

                       RYAN
      (exhausted)
Well It's getting late, I better
get going.

Heads for the steps.

                       JIM
Remember long day tomorrow, and
don't forget to jog home. If you
want to slay the dragon, we're
gonna have to push your body to
it's limits kid. We got long way
to go, and Ellery ain't gonna
wait.

Ryan stops and turns back around for a moment.

                       RYAN
Yes sir. and Jim, thanks.

                       JIM
      (smiles)
My pleasure Ryan, good work today
kid...And one more thing, keep
this in the back of your mind.
When you're slacking off, or just
taking a break, Ellery at that
same moment, is training to kick
YOUR ASS!

49.

Jim walks over the shelves grabbing something wrapped in
plastic. It's too far for Ryan to see without his specs on
his face. Jim tosses it at Ryan, who barely catches it. It's
a new mouth peice.

Ryan inspects it, placing it in his pocket.

                       RYAN
Thanks.

Jim just nods.

                       JIM
Ryan.

                       RYAN
Yeah?

                       JIM
Congrats on the date kid (Smiles)
and good luck.

                       RYAN
Thanks.

Ryan puts his glasses on his face then socks and shoes back
on his feet, then exits.

EXT. BUS STOP - NIGHT

Ryan is visually freezing cold and drenched in a sweat
covered T-shirt as his breath vaporizes, white particles
of snow come swirling down quickly covering everything
in sight.

Petty thieves, junkies, and hookers prowl around the
dimly lit Detroit bus stop glaring at Ryan like fresh
white meat, standing in a never safe enough distance
nervously in the dark awaiting his ride with his mothers
department of public transportation bus pass in hand.

A street bum with a partially smoked cigarette in his
mouth, digs out a half eaten cheeseburger from the
overflown trash can located next to the bus stop sign
Ryan is leaning against when the bus arrives, the doors
open and Ryan steps on like it's a matter of life and
death.

50.

INT. BUS - NIGHT

The doors of the bus close. WHOOSH! Ryan giving a
gentle smile and a nod as he flashes his pass to
the driver while making his way to the closest
available seat, the bus is filled with passengers
of minority decent, women and children, mothers with
babies on their laps, blue collar fathers, homeless
men, shysters, thugs and gangsters, trying not to make
eye contact, he climbs in an open seat pressing his
face against the window as the bus pulls away.

EXT. BUS STOP - NIGHT

Gets off the bus, and begins to make his way down a
extremely busy main shopping boulevard covered in snow,
ice, and slush to a quiet gated community, he is reading
each address on the mailboxes brushing them off as he
wanders by, with every house growing larger as he passes.

EXT. KELLY'S HOUSE - NIGHT

Multi-Million dollar gated community, He strolls by
Expensive luxury cars, and limousines that fill the
freshly snow swept long winding driveway to the top,
passing women in evening gowns, their dates in tuxedos,
and valet men wearing orange vest are parking the $200,000
cars for some formal event at the massive Lake-Sinclair
front angular brick mansion.

Snow is falling fast and covers the ground. Ryan T-shirt
and jeans double checks the address on a piece of paper
stuffed in his pocket, as he shivers from the sub-zero
Great-Lake breeze blasting his sweat drenched body, he
modestly straitens his hair, takes a deep breath, then
pushes the doorbell.

Kelly answers in a long gown with her hair done up it a bun.

                       KELLY
Oh my god? You must be freezing!
Where is your coat? There is a
winter storm advisory out there,
are you nuts!

                       RYAN
      (shivering)
It's not that bad, Can I come in?

51.

INT. KELLY'S HOUSE - NIGHT

Ryan remains motionless and just stares at her beauty for a
moment, then enters the mansion.

                       KELLY
HI! I'm glad you could make it, I
had no idea about this dinner
party, and I thought it would be
horrible to wait till you arrived
to find out about your clothes. If
I would have had your phone number
--

Giving him a giant hug.

                       RYAN
It's not a big deal. I'm used to
being singled out as the freak in
the crowd!(giggles) I just hope
your parents are OK with me
dressing too informal.

The mixed aroma of cigarettes and catered food filled
the air, The house is alive with the noise of family,
friends, workers, and guest, the wonderful sound of
strangers chattering, laughing, and having cocktails
replacing their empty wine glasses with full ones as
the help passes by carrying a tray full of wine and
champagne.

                       KELLY
They'll love you! Are you sure
your not cold? I could get you one
of my dads sweaters or coats?

                       RYAN
Um, Yeah, looking around I'm not
so sure I'm their type? I'll be
alright I'm warming up already.
You think maybe I could get
something to drink though?

Ryan and Kelly make their way through the crowd toward the
kitchen.

INT. KELLY'S KITCHEN - NIGHT

Beautiful over sized kitchen, Ryan and Kelly are alone.

Kelly opens the fridge.

52.

                       KELLY
What are you in the mood for?

                       RYAN
Water's fine.

Kelly pours Ryan a glass of water handing him the cold
perspiring glass, their fingers gently touch briefly.

Eye contact.

Seconds seem like an eternity.

He drinks slowly leaning his head back against the fridge.

Awkward silence.

                       KELLY
So have you ever been to Michigan
before moving here?

                       RYAN
No, had never really been anywhere
before we started moving around a
lot. It was nice, I knew everyone
since kindergarten and for the
most part everyone got along.
Everywhere else has been nothing
but clicks that refuse to let
anyone outside their little circle
in.

Ryan doesn't know what to say, Kelly glances anxiously at
him.

                       KELLY
Sounds like your home sick. Moving
must be tough, I would just die if
I had to leave everyone my senior
year!

                       RYAN
Hasn't been easy, Shit besides you
and this guy Jim I just
met...(catches himself)

Ryan nervously massages the back of his neck.

                       KELLY
Besides Me and Jim what?

53.

                       RYAN
Nothing it's stupid, just forget
it.

                       KELLY
      (HUGE SMILE)
No really don't be embarrassed,
tell me!

                       RYAN
It's nothing. Your just the only
friends I've made in a long time.

Kelly grabs Ryan's hand locking index fingers, briefly
staring in each others innocent eyes with passion &
curiosity.

                       KELLY
      (smiles)
Do you want some more?

Ryan is lost in Kelly's beautiful green eyes.

                       RYAN
More what?

                       KELLY
      (chuckles)
Water silly.

                       RYAN
No, no thank you.

Ryan fumbles through his pockets for a pack of bubble gum
offering Kelly a piece nervously.

                       KELLY
Are you nervous?

                       RYAN
Maybe a little.

                       KELLY
Why?

                       RYAN
I can't describe it, the feeling I
get when I'm with you.

                       KELLY
You don't have to, (smiles) I feel
it too.

54.

The romantic teens lean in to kiss, but a guest barges in
the kitchen ruining the moment.

                       RYAN
Mind if I use your restroom?

                       KELLY
No, go up the stairs and the
bathroom is the first door on the
right. Would you like me to show
you?

                       RYAN
I'll be okay, thanks.

                       KELLY
Okay, I'll be here...waiting.

Ryan exits the kitchen.

INT. KELLY'S LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

Ryan squeezes his way through the party to the steps.

He walks the spiral steps to the restroom.

He checks the handle, it's locked.

So he slides his back down the wall sitting patiently for
his turn.

The door opens, Ryan stands & is shocked at who comes out of
the bathroom.

                       ELLERY
What the fuck are you doing in my
house faggot fuck?

                       RYAN

                       ELLERY
I'm not going to tell you this
again, Stay the fuck away from my
sister DORK!

Ellery grabs Ryan by the back of the neck forcing him into
the bathroom, then shutting the door behind them.

55.

Ryan's nose open, he tumbles in the large empty
container, taking down the shower curtain with
him.

                       ELLERY
      (baneful)

Ellery exits bathroom.

Ryan holding back his tears gets up & washes
his nose in sink, trying to stop the blood from
streaming down his mouth and chin.

INT. KELLY'S KITCHEN - NIGHT

Ryan walks into kitchen with his nose plugged with tissue,
head tilted back, and shirt covered in blood.

Kelly is blown away and races over to Ryan's aid.

                       KELLY
OH MY GOD! WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU?

Ryan grows angry slapping a coaster off the counter, sending
it flying across the kitchen.

                       RYAN
      (had enough)
Your god damn brother happened to

56.

                       KELLY
I would have told you, If I

eat lunch alone, and never talk to
anyone? How could I have known?

Kelly empties an ice tray into dish rag, then placing it on

INT. RYAN'S APARTMENT - NIGHT

Ryan takes his blood stained shirt off throwing it in the
trash.

He sits down at the computer shirtless turning it on,
logs on to check his email, it's full of death threats
by anonymous senders.

His eyes tear up, he suddenly picks up the monitor,
smashing it on the ground.

His mom comes hauling ass into the room.

                       RYAN
No mom, it must be my allergies
acting up or something.

She can see right through her sons lie, but doesn't mention
it out of respect for his privacy.

                       GAIL
There's some benadryl in the
medicine cabinet.

Gail makes her way to the door, opening it.

                       KELLY

                       KELLY
I'm Kelly Marrol. Ryan and I go to
school together --

Ryan jumps from his seat.

                       GAIL

in my room.

58.

As his mother passes, she can hardly hold back her
smile of excitement for her son, giving him a very
discreet thumbs up.

                       KELLY
Your mom seems nice.

Kelly walks over and sits down on the couch patting the
cushion with her open hand. (signaling Ryan over)

                       RYAN
Yah, she's great!

Ryan walks over, and stands in front of Kelly.

                       KELLY

                       KELLY

back over for dinner so they could
apologize themselves.

                       RYAN
Not necessary...I'm sorry too! I
shouldn't have taken it out on
you.

Kelly signals Ryan to sit, this time he does.

                       KELLY
He's such a violent dick some
times!

                       RYAN
      (beat)
More like all the time.

Kelly takes Ryan by the hand, with her other she puts her
finger over his lips in a flirtatious way.

They gaze into each others eyes, she leans in, and they kiss
gently and genuinely.

It starts to get passionate, she pulls back.

Kelly stands still holding his hand, then slowly moves
toward the door.

59.

                       KELLY
Well...I gotta get going, I'll see
you soon. (smitten) Maybe in the
library at lunch?

Ryan can't believe what just happened.

                       RYAN
Ya..Yeah.

Kelly blows him a kiss then exits the apartment.

Ryan for a brief moment looks over his head and knows Ellery
will kill him over this.

But his feelings for her overcome the fear.

Pumps his fist.

                       RYAN
      (PROUD!)

The three laugh watching Ryan open his pad lock, then
lifting up on the handle, putting his coat inside, taking

                       JIM

(smiles at Ryan) You hear it kid?

Ryan mimics Jim, struggling a bit,and frustrated but never
giving up.

                       RYAN
      (smiles)
Yeah!

Tommy & Coach walk down the steps hands full with bags of
gatorade. They put the bags on the floor & make their way to
the ring.

Ryan thirsty, can't take his eyes off the beverages never
says a word just reluctantly goes over to the ring with
Tommy and Coach.

                                         CUTT TO RING

                       COACH EVENS
First, I'm gonna break you down,
simply to show you that balance is
the most important thing in
grappling. In wrestling you use
your center of gravity to use your
opponents weight against him. That
will take technique not strength,
combined with conditioning, YOU
WILL OUT LAST YOUR OPPONENT!

Coach & Tommy teach Ryan take down defense, He practices
with Tommy repetition after repetition struggling against a
superior opponent.

                       COACH EVENS
FIRST YOU WILL BECOME FRUSTRATED,
NEXT YOU WILL BECOME DESPERATE,
THEN YOU WILL START THINKING
CLEARLY, & FINALLY IT WILL BECOME
INSTINCT.
NOW, There are many ways to avoid
a take down, YOU WILL USE THREE.

The two begin to roll in the ring, practicing the training
exercise.

66.

                       COACH EVENS
      (background)
(MORE) 1.SPRAWL BACK USING BALANCE
& YOUR OPPONENTS WEIGHT AGAINST
HIMSELF. 2. UNDER HOOKS, BY
WRAPPING YOUR OPPONENT UNDERNEATH
HIS ARMS YOUR CENTER OF GRAVITY
WILL BE LOWER THAN HIS, MAKING IT
MORE DIFFICULT FOR HIM TO GET ANY
LOWER TO TAKE YOU DOWN. & 3.
SIMPLY GET THE HELL OUT OF THE
WAY, BY SIDE STEPPING OR AS JIM
LIKES TO CALL IT LATERAL MOVEMENT.

Tommy still a bit sore from being attacked, rotates his arm
in a circle multiple times.

He carefully begins stretching his arm behind his head,
trying to get it warmed up.

Tommy shows Ryan as many training tricks as he knows, while
repeating the moves multiple times. Ryan legs tire, getting
up a little slower after every repetition.

Tommy gets Ryan in a triangle choke, Ryan struggles.

                       JIM (V.O.)
      (Yelling from
       outside the ring)
JUST CAUSE YOU GUYS AREN'T GOIN'
FAST, DOESN'T MEAN YOU CAN'T WORK
HARD! TOMMY YOU BETTER WORK THAT
BOY TILL HIS LEGS FALL OFF, YOU
HEAR ME!

                       TOMMY
      (Applying pressure)
Go ahead get out of it.

Ryan's oxygen is cut off, he can't breath and his face is
beet-red.

                       RYAN
      (Gargles)

Ryan quickly taps the mat before losing consciousness.

Tommy scoops up Ryan, holding him firmly around the thighs,
body pointing strait up in the air, Ryan tries bracing
himself, Tommy slams Ryan down hard on his back, then
controls Ryan on the ground.

67.

                       TOMMY
      (wrestling)
You know how I do it Jim!

Tommy gets behind Ryan locking him in a rear naked choke,
Ryan struggles.

                       TOMMY
      (Applying pressure)
Go 'head get out of it.

Ryan taps

Ryan's oxygen is cut off, he can't breath and his face is
beet-red.

                       RYAN
      (Gargles)

Next they teach Ryan how to take down the opponent. He
practices with Tommy repetition after repetition.

Ryan lunges in taking Tommy to his butt, Tommy traps Ryan's
head in a guillotine lock, wrapping his muscular arm around
Ryan's neck. Tommy's hands are clasped, Pressure is applied
restricting blood flow to the brain causing near
unconsciousness.

                       TOMMY
      (Applying pressure)
Tap out stupid!

Ryan taps just before passing out. Tommy lets go, Ryan
desperately gasp for air!

                       RYAN (S.O.)
      (Coughing)

Ryan struggles to catch his breath, while Tommy laughs.

                       TOMMY
      (laughing)
How you supposed to learn, if
you're passed out?

                       RYAN
You tell me.

CUT TO OUTSIDE THE RING

Coach takes Jim to the side.

68.

                       COACH EVENS
All due respect Jim, I think what
you're doing for this boy is
fantastic, but Ellery took apart
Tommy! I'm afraid Ryan going to
get his god damn brains bashed in!

Jim is blindsided by Coach's opinion.

                       JIM
OK! RYAN, TOMMY COME ON OVER HERE
FOR A MINUTE, THERE'S SOMETHING I
HAVE TO CLEAR UP.

                                         CUT TO WRESTLING MAT

The two walk over to Jim and Coach, they sit on the ground.

Tommy takes out his mouthpiece resting it behind his ear.

Ryan does the same.

                       JIM
Tommy.

                       TOMMY
Whud up?

                       JIM
Ellery used a self defense
technique better known as
Senshido. It was designed for
WOMEN and the ELDERLY to protect
themselves against muggers,
rapist, kid nappers, and even
murderers! If a Woman or Senior
Citizen can inflict enough pain on
an attacker and be effective using
these techniques, imagine the
outcome when a trained fighter
uses them. (directed at Tommy &
Coach) ELLERY CAUGHT YOU OFF GUARD
WITH THESE MOVES! HE KNEW YOUR
FIRST INSTINCTS WOULD BE TO
WRESTLE, AND HE WAS RIGHT! THAT IS
THE ONLY REASON IT WAS SO
EFFECTIVE! It was well planned,
Nothing more.

69.

INT. BURGER KING - NIGHT

Ryan & Kelly sit in a booth enjoying a meal together.
Ryan takes a huge bite from his burger, Kelly laughs & wipes
ketchup from his chin as she drinks from her straw.

EXT. BURGER KING - NIGHT

A tricked out red convertible drives slowly passed the well
lit restaurant with a psychotic looking Ellery watching the
two together as they pass.

INT. JIM'S GYM - NIGHT

More Take down defense.
More Take down offense.
More jump rope.
More shadow boxing.
More weight training.
More speed bag.

INT. EISENHOWER HIGH SCHOOL HALL WAY - DAY

Ryan & Kelly are holding hands walking the halls.

Ellery, Jeremy, & Cash are just ahead when they notice the
two together. Ellery is furious as they pass, Cash puts his
foot out tripping Ryan as he goes crashing to the floor!

                                         (S.O.) LAUGHS!

Ryan gets up fast with a mixture of fear and revenge written
all over his face, he's headed strait for Cash anyway.

Tommy comes flying out of no where tackling Cash to the
floor.

Pumped up school mates circle the action as a bigger
stronger Cash starts to get the upper hand. Kelly is
standing between her brother & boyfriend when Jeremy jumps
over her sucker punching Ryan on the cheek.

Coach Evens & other staff members rip Cash off of a bloodied
but pissed off Tommy. Ellery proudly grabs Jeremy pulling
him away from trouble, & congratulating him as they make
their way from action. Kelly is crying but stays strong
enough to calm Ryan convincing him to stay put.

70.

INT. JIM'S GYM - NIGHT

Over a series of weeks Ryan progressively gets better.
Montage of Jim, Coach Evens, and Tommy training him;

Speed bag purrs fast in a perfect figure eight.

Jump rope hums quickly around him.

Shadow boxing amazes himself in his own reflection.

Weight training.

Ground game solid and strong.

Back to speed bag.

Back to jump rope.

Back to shadow boxing.

Back to ground game.

Back to weights.

Ryan is lean cut, and muscular from conditioning.

                       JIM
How do you feel?

                       RYAN
I feel great!

Jim wraps his arm around Ryan's neck.

                       JIM
      (crack up)
Then I guess it's time to start
training. Mitts, Kicks, Sparring,
DEFENSE AND OFFENSE FROM YOUR
BACK! And ping pong kid!

                       RYAN
      (snickers)
Ping pong? Is that some kind of
wax on wax off karate trick or
something?

Jim walks off.

                       JIM
No, it's called fun kid, you do
remember what fun is don't you.

71.

INT. JIM'S LIVING ROOM. - NIGHT

Jim sits on the edge of his seat, drinking a beer next to
Ryan in a fold out chair, examining old video footage of
Ellery at tournaments competing.

They watch paying close attention for mistakes and Tells.

                       RYAN
Damn he's good! Anyone ever beat
him?

                       JIM
No.

                       RYAN
So what's the game plan then?

Jim pauses the action on the T.V.

                       JIM
      (certain)
You make him bring the fight to
you. Stick with our game plan,in a
unpredictable pattern, stay away
from him, counter punch
effectively, smother his punches,
get him frustrated and remember
our lessons. We're gonna beat'em
kid. Every thing he knows I taught
him, and now I'm teaching you how
to defend it kid.

                       RYAN
You really think I can win?

Ryan can see the growing confidence in his friends eyes.

Jim points at the paused T.V. showing Ellery's left hand
clearly at his waist while his right is extended.

                       JIM
      (challenged)
(points at T.V.) He drops his
left, when he throws his right
asking to be punished. And he
loves to throw back foot high
kicks leaving his lead foot with
out balance, just asking for
someone to shoot the boot! Do I
think you can win?

72.

Jim reaches out with a smile placing his hand on Ryan's
shoulder.

                       JIM
When the fist start to fly, the
crowd roars and he starts making
all the same mistakes, I can
direct you, but it's your heart
and sheer guts that will be tested
kid!

Ryan silently nods his head with a look of pride in his
eyes.

                       JIM
      (challenged)
I think you're five foot eight but
have the heart of a gladiator
every bit of six foot nine, But if
you take your eye off the prize
for even a second kid, he'll make
you pay the price.

Jim starts up the video and stares at the tube.

He pauses again pointing at Ellery in mid-stride of a back
foot high kick.

Ryan starts to realize Jim knows exactly what he's talking
about. That he is taking this as seriously as anyone ever
could.

                       RYAN
I understand. (pauses) Jim I just
want to say I appreciate
everything you're doing.

Takes a sip of his beer.

                       JIM
I know you do kid. In a lot of
ways, it's given me the strength
to get back up from the canvas
too.

INT. RYAN'S APARTMENT. - DAY

Ryan snoozes in his bed when the startling sound of the
alarm goes off, he stretches over turning it off. The clock
reads 5:00AM, He throws on a sweatsuit, gym shoes, then
straps leg weights around both ankles.

73.

He strolls into the kitchen for a drink, His Mother is at
the table still in her pajamas having a cup of coffee,
reading the morning newspaper.

                       GAIL
Morning sweetheart. What are you
doing up so early?

                       RYAN
Going for a run.

His mother gets the eggs out of the refrigerator and begins
cracking them into the frying pan.

                       GAIL
You really think using your fist
is the best way to deal with your
problems?

                       RYAN
Mom, I think other people using
their fist on me is my problem!

                       GAIL
I just don't want you to get hurt.

                       RYAN
I'll be fine.

Scrabbling the eggs.

                       GAIL
      (skeptical)
We don't even know this guy, he
could be some kind of child
molester for all we know?

                       RYAN
WHAT? (LAUGHS) Jim's a great guy!
He's not only teaching the
physical side of Cuong Nhu but
spiritual, mental, and
philosophical.

Ryan roams to the front door, opening it.

                       GAIL
I'm just glad to see you happy
again Ryan!(relieved) At least
have some breakfast first.

74.

                       RYAN
Can't right now, maybe after the
run (smiles) gotta go, Love you.

Ryan slips away from the apartment.

                       GAIL
      (smiles)
I LOVE YOU!!! AND BE CAREFUL THIS
IS DETROIT!

EXT. STREETS OF DETROIT - AM - DAY

Ryan runs for miles in knee high fluffy, intense blustery
snow conditions, beating even the sun rise, training in the
magnificent moonlight that illuminates the snow covered
ghost-town. Other than street bums, hookers, and drug
dealers Ryan is the only soul in sight for miles ahead.

His breath is coiling and rising into the sky.

The only vehicle on the road is a snow plow, with its orange
lights flashing.

He finishes his run just in time to shower, and get ready
for school.

EXT. KELLY'S FRONT YARD - NIGHT

Ryan walks Kelly up the porch holding her hand, they stop
short of the front door.

Ellery's face appears in the window.

Ryan is dumbstruck, he can't keep his eyes off her.

                       RYAN
      (Stares hard into
       her eyes)
So I'll see you later then.

                       KELLY
      (sighs and smiles.)
I'll be looking forward to it.

The front door opens, catching Ryan off guard. It's Ellery.
Red-Faced with fury, Ryan glances in his direction then
kisses Kelly and jogs off.

75.

INT. JIM'S GYM - DAY

Ryan and Jim are standing in front of the heavy bag.

Jim circles Ryan hovering of him, and flailing his fist all
about.

                       JIM
There are five controls for self
defense kid. Control your area by
awareness, control yourself and
any fear or anger, control your
attacker with a strategy, control
the situation by being patient,
and control the consequences by
being wiser. Now, kicking isn't
any different than punching,they
have the same basic principles you
want to stay balanced, shift your
weight, and always protect your
self by keeping up your guard.

Jim crouches down in his guard and slowly demonstrates a
front kick, then slowly brings his leg back into his
fighting guard.

                       JIM
That's a front kick, its powerful
and can be effective if you snap
your kick, maintain your distance
shift your weight and stay
balanced at the same time.

Ryan attempts the same kick struggling to get it right.

                       JIM
You have to be extra careful with
kicks, You leave yourself wide
open for your opponent to shoot
the boot.

Another kick.

                       JIM
Not bad. Try again, snap the kick
this time.

Another kick.

                       RYAN
      (kicking)
Shoot the boot?

76.

                       JIM
(scuffs)It's when your kick is
extended fully out, and he shoots
underneath your kick grabbing your
planted leg or foot for a take
down. "SHOOT THE BOOT"...That is
why I want you to practice all of
your kicks from your back.

                       RYAN
From my back?

Jim lies on his back.

                       JIM
Yes, from your back.

                       RYAN
Isn't the object of fighting to
stay off your back?

                       JIM
Not everything works out the way
you plan them.

                       RYAN
Don't I know.

From his back he demonstrates multiple kicks.

                       JIM
      (demonstrates)
A great tool in kicking is
learning how to throw them from
the floor up. Most students only
practice kicks standing, and that
means on one leg. Their balance is
an issue and development is
limited. From the laying down
position ON YOUR BACK I will first
teach you the front snap and front
thrust kick, then roundhouse,
crescent, and heel kicks! When I
SAY YOU'RE READY we will move on
to you laying on your side,
practicing side kicks with your
reaction leg, then move on to the
other side.

Ryan gets down on his back and mimics his teachings.

77.

                       RYAN
      (BREATHING HEAVY &
       KICKING)
I still really don't fully
understand why exactly
I'm kicking from my back?
I've never seen this on T.V.?

Jim springs to his feet standing over Ryan, he reaches down
towards Ryan's face but can't get past the kicks. Jim gives
him a look of "see I told you so". Ryan has a understanding
smile on his face.

                       JIM
This way you can extend the kick,
extend your hips. This will lift
your hips off the ground and time
the extension of the hips with the
extension of the weapon surface of
the kick. THIS WILL GIVE YOU AN
OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE MASSIVE REPS
FROM THE GROUND, USING YOUR HIPS
AT FULL CAPACITY! Then WHEN I SAY
you're ready we go to standing
kicks giving you standing reps!
Then heavy bag, focus mitts, and
sparing. This technique on your
back will also help develop great
ground work, keeping your opponent
a safe distance from you, while on
your back...This application will
also help you develop awesome
scissors kicks!

Jim jumps in the air throwing a relentless scissor kick
plastering his leg against the leather heavy bag, it swings
wild & all over the place. Jim bearhugs the bag stopping
it's movements.

Ryan strenuously works hard on continuous repetitions
pushing himself with every kick from his back.

                       RYAN
      (BREATHING HEAVY &
       KICKING)
Like this?

                       JIM
Yeah that's good! You ever been to
GraceLand kid?

                       RYAN
Wha? No sir, why?

78.

Jim picks up a water bottle spraying his head and neck then
takes a drink.

                       JIM
I was there a few months back, and
I just can't get over the fact
that the guy was considered by
most as "The King". Yet when he
died, they buried his ass in the
back yard like a god damn dead
dog?

                       RYAN
      (chuckles)

Jim playfully squirts Ryan with water catching him off
guard, startling him for a moment as it's hitting his face.

                       JIM
      (outbursting in
       laughter)
STAY FOCUSED KID!

Ryan covers his face with his open hands.

                       JIM
ATTITUDE DETERMINES ALTITUDE
and holding on to anger is like
grasping a hot coal with only the
intent of throwing it at someone
else, YOU'RE THE ONE WHO GETS
BURNED. Understand?

                       RYAN
      (joking with Jim)
Not really grasshopper...I got it,
I understand.

Tommy and Coach Evens walk down the steps entering the gym.

                       JIM
Alright Ryan that's enough for the
night. Coach, you get the tickets?

Coach pulls a fist full of tickets from his back pocket,
spreading them out like a fan, waving them at Jim.

                       JIM
GREAT! (directed at Tommy & Ryan)
You guys ready for a field trip?

                       RYAN
Field trip where?

79.

                       JIM
The fights!

They pile up in Jim car and venture off.

INT. JIM'S CAR - NIGHT

Jim drives down a four lane snow covered highway, with
Ryan and Tommy in the back seats, and Coach Evens sitting
shotgun.

Ryan reaches between the two front seats turning the radio
off, then resting his hands on the back of both head rest
in front of him.

                       RYAN
Tell me again why we're going to
watch these Psycho bastards again?

Jim adjust his rear view mirror pointing it at Ryan.

                       JIM
Sometimes it's more important to
see how a fighter loses and not
how he wins.

                       RYAN
I've already seen these guys win,
one to many times.

Coach turns his head half way looking at both boys.

                       COACH EVENS
No, he's right. It's no different
then when I go scout other
wrestling teams, It's part of the
process.

                       TOMMY
What makes you so sure this cat
will lose anyway?

Tilts the rear view mirror at Tommy.

                       JIM
Look, there are two categories of
fighters. Some guys need to fight
every week for practice, and then
there's guys like Ellery, who
fight to satisfy their thirst! He
has to fight, for him it's in his
blood, it runs through his veins,
it's an addictive adrenaline rush,
            (MORE)

                       JIM (cont'd)
that he has to have, like a junkie
getting their fix.(sighs) Most
people with this addiction end up
fighting behind bars not in a
cage. He's too arrogant to not
make mistakes, were gonna find his
flaws and use them against him
later on.

Jim pulls the car to the side of the highway, hitting a snow
drift, putting the shifter in park, and turns facing Ryan.

                       JIM
The only way you'll get a fair
shake at pummeling this guy, is if
you fight with rules, a referee,
judges, and rounds with your team
in your corner helping you along.

Ryan nervously massages the back of his neck.

                       RYAN
Wait? You expect me to fight a kid
who you yourself just said was a
psychopath violent vampire with a
thirst for blood, locked in cage?

                       JIM
If you prefer outside the school,
you against HIM AND HIS FRIENDS
with no rules stomping you and
ending the fight when they feel
like you've had enough. It's up to
you kid, this way is much safer
and less painful.

Jim turns back around and continues driving, Ryan's face
turns pale white with fear.

LET'S GET IT ON BOYS, FIGHT!

The two heavyweight's go straight at each other engaging in
battle standing toe to toe fearlessly exchanging swooping

accuracy looking for that big knock out punch.

                                         (V.O. FAN) GET THAT
NIGGA, PORKCHOP!

The loud thuds from every connecting shot can be heard over
the crowd.

                       JIM
These boys pack a wallop! At least
you don't have to worry about this
guy kid.

                       RYAN
What, Why?

Keeping an eye on the action.

                       JIM
He's out of you're weight class,
unless you plan on plumping up
40pounds over the next few months.

The skin head drives forward throwing a high kick to the
side of Cash's already bloody face.

Cash lands on his ass. The skin head lunges forward diving
down on top of a struggling Cash.

Jim jumps to his feet.

The crowd explodes wanting more blood!

The skin head throws multiple hammer fist down on Cash's
face. A defenseless Cash is trying to cover his head, Shot
after Shot smashes down landing.

82.

                       COACH EVENS
      (Directed at Tommy)
Different God Damn story when he
takes on someone his own size.

                       TOMMY
      (strait faced)
(Glances at Coach then back at
Cash) He ain't shit.

Ohhh! This Cash is all brawn and
no brain!

                       RYAN
      (directed at Jim)
At least make an effort to get out
of the way.

The referee tackles the skinhead off of Cash, holding him
with one hand and waving the other in the air signifying
the fight is over, and the skin head is victorious.

Ryan stands and cheers.

Tommy couldn't be happier, laughing & jumping for joy in
reference to his scuffle in school with Cash.

                       RYAN
      (smiles and claps)
What little brains that asshole
had was damaged after tonight.

NEXT FIGHT - JEREMY SAPP VS OPPONENT

Jeremy enters the cage in a fit of rage, dancing on his
toes, punching himself in the jaw multiple times. He
practically runs to the center of the cage for the referee's
instructions, Jeremy edges closer and closer to his
opponents face. The referee tries to make more distance
between the two by placing his hands in between them, but
Jeremy's anger and eagerness is uncontrollable, his face is
purple, and veins are protruding from his neck. The referee
is struggling to keep him back.

83.

Jeremy pushes the man's face with an open hand, snapping his
head back.

       Jeremy)
One more stunt like that and
you're disqualified, DO YOU
UNDERSTAND ME?

Jeremy smiles and nods never taking his eyes off his
opponent, as he walks backwards to his corner man.

                       RYAN
I'm convinced!

                       JIM
What do you know about this kid
Coach?

                       COACH EVENS
This Jeremy was on my wrestling
squad for two years, he wasn't
squat! He came back the next year
a new man. He improved his ground
game over that summer, weight
training on his own. The
transformation was unbelievable.

                       TOMMY
Na Coach, he came back on juice!
And by the looks of this Lil sissy
fit, some things haven't changed.

                       JIM
Self improved often leads to self
destruction. -- the best offense
is a good defense Ryan, and if
this screwball can't hit you,

Wouldn't worry too much about this
nut. Wait and see, he'll implode.

Jeremy heads strait at his opponent shooting for his legs,
then out powering him effortlessly by lifting him off the
ground on one shoulder, running across the cage with his
opponent in his arms then slamming the man to the canvas!

                       JIM
He gets you down like that you
work your kicks from the ground to
maintain a safe distance until you
can get back to your feet.

Jeremy takes side control, his opponent struggles to get up
from his back with Jeremy throwing vicious knees to his rib
cage.

                       RYAN

The opponent rolls over to his stomach with one hand on the
mat pushing himself up to try to escape, MORE KNEES, the
opponent desperately pulls one foot up planting it on the
ground. Jeremy moves in for the kill, jumping on his

88.

                       KELLY

                       KELLY
Yep! It's a little weird though,
you training my BOYFRIEND to fight
my brother?

Jim pauses not sure how to reply.

                       RYAN
      (word boyfriend
       surprises him)
I thought I did? I guess it just
slipped my mind that the two of
you knew one another.

The look of excitement, triumph, and surprise is written all
over his face and body language.

                       JIM
      (Directed at Kelly)
I KNOW RIGHT! You should show Ryan
your side kick, I'm sure he'd be
impressed

                       RYAN

injured?

                       RYAN
Umm? Hurt I guess. Why?

                       JIM
If you're hurt you can still
fight, if you're injured that's a
different story. Remember we all
have lingering injuries we fight
through.

They exit up the stairs.

joke at his expense.

Ryan drys off, puts his cloths on then slips his feet into
his shit filled shoes, he notices something wrong instantly
pulling his shoes off to find his socks covered in shit and
the insides of his shoes ruined.

                       RYAN
      (directed at
       everyone)
VERY FUNNY GUYS! YOU RUINED MY
SHOES! SOMEONE IS GOING TO BUY ME
A NEW PAIR!

A sudden burst of laughter from fellow classmates at Ryan's
expense.

Ryan finds Coach Evens and Silently making his shoes visible
in shame, never saying a word he takes his socks off washes
his feet in the sink, throws away his shoes, and wears a
pair of old football cleats the rest of the day.

INT. JIM'S LIVING ROOM. - DAY

Jim walks over to his closet reaching in and grabbing a pair
of shoes handing them to Ryan.

                       JIM
Coach told me what happened to
your shoes. Your a size ten right?

                       RYAN
Yeah. You don't have to --

Ryan tries on the shoes while listening to Jim.

                       JIM
-- It's OK I wanted to. Just take
the damn shoes kid, it's not like
I'm giving you the cure to cancer!
Just a way to keep your feet
warm...Besides Kell-Bell don't
need to be seen around town with
some kid wearing football cleats,
especially one that don't even
play football.

INT. TRAINING GOING WELL - DAY

                                         INSIDE RING

Ryan is in tip top shape, He is in the ring sparring full
contact with Tommy. Ryan is slippery and almost impossible
to hit, keeping a safe distance, he springs in then counter
punches Tommy, then slips out of striking distance, waits
patiently for Tommy to throw again, Ryan is Touching,
turning, knocking him back, and nailing him repeatedly.Tommy
shoots for Ryan's legs taking him to his back, Ryan slides
his legs around Tommy's head trapping his arm under his
chin, putting him in a triangle choke, Ryan applies
pressure making Tommy tap out.

Jim looks on impressed.

Working on standing kicks and flying knees.

Ryan stays focused, while listening to Jim in the back
ground.

93.

                       JIM (V.O.)
Remember it takes more energy to
miss a shot then it does to land
one! Stay accurate and make him
miss!

Ryan picks up a towel from the mat, then wipes the sweat
from his face and head.

                       RYAN
I'll keep that in mind.

                       JIM (V.O.)
YOU GOTTA THINK SIMPLER RYAN!
THINK FASTER!
THINK BETTER!
THINK DEEPER!
THINK WISER!

Ryan slips his hands in a pair of boxing gloves one at a
time, then uses his mouth to tighten the Velcro.

                       JIM
      (smiling)
So Ryan, this Blonde walks into a
Chinese dry cleaner, hands her
blue dress to the Asian woman
behind the counter, then turns
around and walks away, as the
Blonde is walking out the door the
Asian yells "come again" the
Blonde stops dead in her tracks,
turns, looks at the Asian woman
and says "no this time it's
yogurt!" (drum noise) BA- BOMP-
CHING!

                       RYAN
      (chuckles)
Not bad, not bad.

INT. JIM'S GYM - NIGHT

                                         HEAVY BAG

Jim holds the back of the heavy bag, while listening Ryan
throws combinations of kicks and punches. From sheer power,
the bag is jerking all over the place, Jim is having a hard
time holding on.

94.

                       JIM
      (Struggling to
       keep the bag
       still)
Many people say only fighting will
give you true development. There
is no substitution for fighting as
far as experience is concerned.
But true development is all about
the approach.

Ryan begins throwing powerful swooping hooks.

                       RYAN
Approach I thought you said
technique is key?

More kicks, knees & elbows.

                       JIM
How often do professional football
players go full speed outside of
game day? Technique is what it's
all about.

Ryan catches his second wind, attacking the bag with pure
vengence in mind.

                       JIM (cont'd)
Add that to natural ability and
hard work and you have a champion.

                       RYAN
      (Winded)
What if you're just out classed?

The two move away from the heavy bag facing each other in
fighting stance.

                       JIM
If they overwhelm you with their
hands, take out their legs.

Jim throws a half speed leg kick connecting just hard enough
to get Ryan's attention.

                       JIM
If they kick strong, get inside
and neutralize their legs.

Jim grabs Ryan behind the knees taking him to his back.

95.

                       JIM
You want to move like water, using
the path of least resistance.

Ryan struggles to get off his back with Jim shifting his
weight in every direction Ryan moves keeping him grounded.

                       JIM
Never underestimate a technique,
know your best technique, and how
to beat it. Understand your
weakness, and how to overcome it.

Jim puts Ryan in a armbar.

Ryan quickly taps.

                       JIM
Be ready for the un-expected.

Ryan goes to get to his feet when Jim traps his leg putting
Ryan in a heel hook leg lock and sending him back to the mat
and tapping all over again.

The two stand but Ryan seems a bit fidgety not knowing if
the lesson is over or not.

                       JIM
Expose yourself in training as
often as possible, do not get
comfortable.

Jim fakes a kick.

Ryan fades back.

                       JIM
NEVER be over confident, and take
no prisoners kid!

INT. JIM'S GYM - NIGHT

Jim is taking down all the photo's of Ellery and himself off
the walls putting them in boxes.

He puts the last one in a full card board box, taping it up.

Jim hangs a snapshot of Ryan and Jim together, next to
photos of Osensei Ngo Dong.

Then photographs of the rest of the team.

96.

Ryan walks down entering the gym.

                       RYAN
      (glazed eyes)
What's all this?

                       JIM
      (embarrassed to be
       proud)
Just thought is was time to
redecorate kid. You're not gonna
get all chick like on me are ya? I
mean you better not start cryin'
like some kind of sissy!

Ryan wraps his arms around a stiff Jim playfully giving him
a unwanted hug.

INT. JIM'S GYM - NIGHT

                                         CUT TO MATS

Jim and Ryan are rolling around on the mats practicing
reversals, jujitsu moves, techniques, submissions, take
downs, arm locks, choke locks, and leg locks.

Jim attempts to mount Ryan but his kicks from the ground up
technique is too strong for Jim to get through.

                       JIM
Alright I'm gonna try to get on
top of you and mount you, you use
your ground kicks to keep me off,
allowing you time to out think
your opponent and giving you room
to get to your feet and react.

Jim and Ryan go at the drill endlessly, Ryan effectively
uses his feet to keep Jim away.

                       JIM
      (DURING DRILL)
WHY IS MARTIAL ARTS CALLED
SELF-DEFENSE AND NOT SELF-OFFENSE
KID?

Kicking.

                       RYAN
      (DURING DRILL)
BECAUSE THE BEST OFFENSE IS A GOOD
DEFENSE.

97.

                                         CUT TO HEAVYBAG

Ryan is practicing kicks on heavy bag from the standing
position he is drenched in sweat, his face is beet red, like
he's been at it for hours.

                       JIM
That's right! Okay, give me
5minutes of all out balls to the
wall!

Ryan hits his second wind!

                                         CUT TO MITTS

Ryan throws combinations as fast and as hard as he can for
the last 30 seconds of the round. Red-faced with sweat
flying in every direction he swings and swings.

BELL SOUNDS!(S.O.)

                       JIM
EXCELLENT! THAT'S THE WAY TO
FINISH IT KID!

Jim takes off his mitts setting them on the ground, then
placing his hand on Ryan's left shoulder.

                       JIM
Good job today kid. You're
improving fast.

                       RYAN
Thanks. You have anything to eat?
I'm starving.

Ryan slides his sweaty hands out from his gloves.

                       JIM
Yeah, I think I have some
microwave pizza in the freezer.

                       RYAN
That's cool.

                       JIM
Yeah, free food is always cool.

                       RYAN
Hey Jim I heard eighty percent of
all fights end up going to the
ground. Do you think we should be
working more on the ground game?

98.

                       JIM
Just remember this, one hundred
percent of them start standing
up.(smiles) Now lets go eat.

The two put their gear away and head upstairs for the
kitchen.

INT. JIM'S KITCHEN - NIGHT

Ryan is sitting at the kitchen table while Jim is slicing up
the hot pizza, and placing it on paper plates.

                       JIM
      (silly)
A man is sitting in a bar, and
every so often he pours a little
beer on his hand...The guy next to
him ask "What are you doing?"...So
he says "I'm getting my date
drunk!" (Laughs)

                       RYAN
      (excited)
(Chuckles)
Man Jim, sometimes I just day
dream for hours about different
ways to kick the crap out of
Ellery!

Jim takes his seat, they begin their dinner.

                       JIM
      (Stares hard)
You'll discover one day, that it's
not always about winning.(offers a
tiny smile) It's about accepting
yourself, and being comfortable in
your own skin.

Takes a huge bite.

                       RYAN
I figure once we take down the big
bad wolf, my problem will be
solved.

                       JIM
I got news for you kid, the world
is one big endless line of guys
like Ellery, just waiting to kick
you in the ass!

99.

                       RYAN
Then I'll just block it and kick
back!

Ryan smiles and takes a bite of pizza.

                       JIM
      (talking with his
       mouth full)
I wish it was that simple. You
gotta brush it off and remain
positive about the things you do
have. Remember, negativity and
weakness are like magnets. It's
force sucks in, and recruits other
personalities everyday dragging
them down with the ship!

INT. FIGHTING WOLF DEN MIXED MARTIAL ARTS GYM - NIGHT

State of the art gym full of students drenched in sweat
and exhausted working combinations on the heavy bags,
concentrating hard and working the speed bags. The loud
sounds of grunting and students breathing heavy, pride and
determination written on their faces pushing themselves on
the mat, well organized grappling techniques, machine like
students rolling and perfecting their ground game. Just
above on the second floor of the Olympic size dojo are
students shadow boxing and sparring in and out of the ring.
Ellery is punishing his opponents, putting one down after
another as they climb out of the ring just as fast as they
climb in, all running from the pain Ellery is dishing out.

The far left wall reads;
"Who Ever! When Ever! Where Ever! 4 Ever!"

The far right wall reads;
"Death Before DisHonor"

The wall facing the entrance door reads;
"Bone Breakers Life Takers"

A long white bearded, little old man, who looks like a
skeleton dipped in yellow wax and swallowed by his over
sized Karate Gi slowly approaches Jim.

Jim slips off his shoes and meets the tiny man half way.

Jim bows as a form of respect.

100.

                       JIM
Sensei, can we talk in private for
a minute?

                       SENSEI OOKAMI
I know you?

                       JIM
No sir, here to discuss a problem
with a couple of your students. I
think we can sit and resolve the
matter together.

                       SENSEI OOKAMI
Problem huh? Follow me to my
office, Young man.

                       JIM
Jim.

Jim follows just behind the little old to his office.

                       SENSEI OOKAMI
Of course, right this way Jim.

Sensei OoKAMI opens the door, holding it open for Jim.

                       SENSEI OOKAMI
Please, after you.

INT. SENSEI OOKAMI'S OFFICE - NIGHT

Office's giant plate glass window overlooks the gym,the
walls are covered with ancient black and white photos of
different martial artist and samurai in a variety of
different dojos, just behind his desk is a Japanese flag, to
the left and right of the flag are Japanese scrolls, above
them are swords.

Jim sits at a chair facing Sensei OoKAMI'S desk, Sensei
OoKAMI pulls out his roller chair and sits down.

Sensei OoKAMI points at the scrolls one then the other.

But Jim isn't there for any history lesson, he half
heartedly listens to the old man waiting for his turn to
speak.

                       SENSEI OOKAMI
The scrolls you study, is secret
to Japanese Samurai. Karate is
actually a Japanese word, meaning
empty hand.

101.

                       SENSEI OOKAMI (cont'd)
It's true. The original word for
Japanese martial arts is bujutsu,
meaning art of military.

Crosses his arms.

                       JIM
      (Not interested)
Yeah, well I don't want to take up
a whole lot of your time, so I'll
get right to it.

Jim points out the glass window of the office to the dojo.

                       JIM
A couple of your students have
been bullying my student, and put
another in the hospital. I feel
that the only solution to this
problem would be to match them up,
and let 'em get it out of their
systems in the cage rather than in
the streets.

                       SENSEI OOKAMI
What student of mine brings you so
much concern?

                       JIM
Ellery.

Brushes his fingers through is long white beard reading
Jim's sanity.

                       SENSEI OOKAMI
Ellery is my top student, he is a
perfect 14-0 in competition. What
is your students record?

                       JIM
      (provoking)
Record? That has no relevance
given the serious situation.
Fighters are measured by heart and
soul not wins and losses Sensei.

A very unconvinced Sensei rest his elbow on the desk,
putting his hand over his mouth.

                       SENSEI OOKAMI
Please call me Paul, I
insist.(Smiles) The match doesn't
fit, your request is just too

                       SENSEI OOKAMI (cont'd)
unrealistic! (Shaking his head
No)I can't put my top combat
artist in the cage with a inferior
opponent. Too high of risk no
reward! This is a business and it
just wouldn't look good on his
resume---

A poker faced Jim is expressionless, but is desperatley
holding back a smile knowing everything is going exactly as
he planned.

                       JIM
      (blackmail)
(BEAT) Yeah, well neither would
jail time PAUL! Ellery used
senshido against the school's
finest wrestler practically
blinding the kid. His hands and
feet are registered lethal
weapons. He can't just go around
hitting who he wants...You follow
Paul?

This quickly grabs Sensei's attention. With an alarming look
on his face he still plays hardball.

INT. FIGHTING WOLVES DOJO - NIGHT

Jeremy and Ellery stand in the ring looking on through the
office glass window.

                       JEREMY
WHAT THE FUCK IS HE DOING HERE!
You don't think he's telling
Sensei about what happened with
that little FAGGOT do you?

Ellery takes off his gloves and head gear.

                       ELLERY
      (sighs)
Calm down nut bag, I'll handle
this.

Ellery makes his way toward the office.

INT. SENSEI OOKAMI'S OFFICE - NIGHT

Ellery walks in the office with a arrogant expression.

103.

Puts his hand up and attempts to slap Jim five.

Jim doesn't accept his offer.

                       ELLERY
Jim, what's up bro? Good to see
Ya! Finally looking to get into
coaching M.M.A. huh? You should
have told me, I could have put in
a good word ahead of time bro.

                       JIM
I'm - -

Jim pretends to be visibly frustrated so his plan doesn't
fall apart .

                       SENSEI OOKAMI
- -Ellery to my surprise, Jim here
was just telling me he wants his
number one student to match up
against YOU.

                       ELLERY
      (Blown away)
Top student? Who that queer!

Jim suddenly realizes something: This isn't the boy he spent
countless hours mentoring. Confirming what a real asshole
Ellery has become.

                       JIM
      (Taunting)
His name is Ryan, and the last I
checked he was dating your sister.

Ellery becomes stiff and ready to fight at that very moment.
Sensei silently watching Ellery with an expression of pride.

                       ELLERY
I got no problem with that! It
would be a nice little warm up
before a real fight.

Jim doesn't know whether to react with laughter or anger. He
lets the two work it out knowing Ellery is too cocky to back
down from a challenge with or without his sensei.

                       SENSEI OOKAMI
Sorry we regretfully pass. Thanks
for the offer though, maybe after
your inexperienced young warrior
gets a few wins under his belt.
Who knows in a couple of years

they can meet up in the
professional ranks.

This isn't the response he was waiting to hear.

                       ELLERY
      (Beat)
I WANT THIS FIGHT SENSEI!

                       JIM
      (Beat)
(Illustrates his point) Why spiral
the long winding mountain road,
when we can just climb strait up
to the top. What if Ryan defeats
Jeremy? Will you match Ellery
against him then?

Ellery begins shivering and convulsing with anger.

                       ELLERY
      (directed at Jim)
(Beat)THIS IS BULLSHIT! Jeremy
will take this kid apart with his
eyes closed! Where's that leave
me?

Ellery's confidence is convincing enough. Sensei puzzled by
this offer that seems like pure stupidity on Jim's part.
Jim knows this...

                       SENSEI OOKAMI
      (Chuckles)
Two very different fighters with
completely different styles Jim.

                       JIM
I'm well aware of the difference
between the two.

Jim acts insulted by Sensei's laughter but still very
confident in Ryan, is pleased to make the deal.

                       SENSEI OOKAMI
Are you sure your scrapper can
handle it? Your talking about my
top two students.

                       JIM
      (Beat)
He can handle it. You seem like a
honorable man, just have Ellery in
tip top after we beat Jeremy.

Ellery stands fit to fight.

Jim bows to Sensei OoKAMI, Smiles at a visibly angry Ellery
patting him on the back as he exits the office.

INT. PHYSICAL EDUCATION - GYM - DAY

The entire class participates in volleyball except Jeremy
who sits watching on from the bleachers.

Ryan walks over to Coach Evens with a huge smile.

                       RYAN
I gotta hand it to you Coach,
having Jeremy sit all this time
instead of running laps was a
brilliant strategy for the fight!

                       COACH EVENS
The God damn fool doesn't have a
clue does he?

                       RYAN
He will when he can't breathe on
fight day!

INT. KELLY'S HOUSE - DAY

Ryan and Kelly are on the couch watching Curb Your
Enthusiasm on the giant plasma television set.

Ryan looks over a Kelly seated next to him, leans over into
her ear.

                       RYAN
      (whispers)
Did I tell you how much I loved
you today?

He gently pecks her behind the ear.

This is the first time she's heard this, it's a pleasant
surprise. Long pause as they gaze into each others eyes.

                       KELLY
      (excited)
I love you too.

Ellery, Cash, and Jeremy casually come walking in the front
door. Jeremy smiles, stopping Ellery in his tracks as he
notices Ryan stroking the back of her hair. Ellery is
furious, but Cash beats him into the living room.

Cash smacks Ryan in the back of the head.

Ryan jumps up from the couch on fire.

He feels safe with Kelly, so he becomes very cocky.

                       RYAN
      (Brave)
What's your problem fat ass?!

                       CASH
Hey Ellery the mixed martial TART
thinks he's a tough guy now

                       ELLERY
Don't make me laugh FAG-BOY!

Kelly jumps up pushing them out of the room.

Ryan is relieved she saved him.

                       JEREMY
      (Insane)
You're lucky I don't snap your
neck now you fucking arab bitch!

                       RYAN
Yeah, (hesitates) You'll get your
chance soon enough (pause) Fucker!

Suddenly a BMW pulls into the driveway. It's Kelly and
Ellery's dad & mom. Ellery notices, grabs his fired up
friends and retreats up the stairs to his bedroom.

INT. FIGHT NIGHT ARENA LOCKER ROOM - NIGHT

Jim tapes Ryan's hands, then helps him with his gloves.

                       JIM
A boy comes to me with a spark of
interest,
I feed that spark and it becomes a
flame,
