INT. SUPERMARKET - DAY |
|
|
JOEL stacks apples. He is in uniform. CHRIS walks up to him
with another box of apples and puts it next to him. |
|
|

|
|
|
| |
JOEL
I don't get it, they order
millions of apples every week and
then they end up throwing out most
of them anyway. So, why order
them? |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
KATE enters. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
| |
KATE
(walking away)
Bite me. |
|
|
|
|
KATE continues off-screen. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
| |
JOEL
Maybe she's here to buy tampons. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
CHRIS follows KATE. She stands over by a magazine rack
holding a magazine in front of her face as she stares a boy
at the cash register. He is ALEX MARTIN, 16, a tall, cute,
red-headed boy with dimples. He scans someone's groceries.
CHRIS approaches her. |

KATE SHUSHES him. |
|

(whispering)
What is it? |
|
|

KATE points at ALEX. |
|
|

KATE SHUSHES him, again. |

|

CHRIS (cont'd)
Kate, you don't have to whisper. |

KATE
(whispering)
But, he'll hear us. |
|
|
|

KATE
Oh, don't be such and idiot. |
|
|

ALEX finishes on the person's groceries. The person leaves
and KATE heads over to him. |
|
|

KATE (cont'd)
I'm gonna talk to him. |
|
|

|
|
|
Too late. KATE steps up to ALEX. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
ALEX signs "HELLO" in AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE. |
|

Okay. |

CHRIS runs up to KATE. |
|

CHRIS
I got this.
(signing to Alex)
It's okay, she's a friend. |
|

Alex signs "OKAY". |

CHRIS
Kate, I tried to tell you...
(signing)
Alex is deaf. |
|
|

ALEX shrugs. KATE starts laughing awkwardly. |
|
|

KATE
God, I feel like an ass. |

INT. FREEZER AISLE - SUPERMARKET - DAY |
|
|
KATE dashes down the aisle with a cart. She stops at one of
the freezers as JOEL runs up to her. |
|
|

|
|
| |
KATE
Joel, I know what you're gonna say
and I'm gonna save us some time
and skip right to the part where I
tell you to shut the hell up. |
|
|
|
KATE opens the freezer and starts piling several ice cream
gallons into the shopping cart. After four or five tubs,
JOEL stops her. |
|
|
| |
JOEL
Kate, you're being silly. |
|
|
|

| |
KATE
No, I'm being depressed. I
followed the son-of-a-bitch all
over town for three months, I
almost applied for a job here to
watch him all day long and now I
find out he's deaf and I feel like
an ass because I acted like an ass
and the fact that I never so much
as got a clue of his deafness is
the icing on the bitter cake that
is my life. |

KATE continues to pile tubs of ice-cream into the cart. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
KATE stops pilling the tubs into her cart. She looks at the
pile of ice cream. |
|
|
| |
KATE
That's it. Just five tubs of
chocolate? God, this place sucks. |
|
|
|
KATE wheels the cart over to another part of the freezer
aisle and piles some whipped cream. JOEL follows. |
|
|
| |
JOEL
Kate, stop this crap. All this
junk food is gonna make you fat. |
|
|
|
| |
KATE
C'mon, Joel, there is such a thing
as a girdle. |
|
|
|
| |
JOEL
But, you'll still know that you're
fat. |
|
|
|
| |
KATE
And that is why God created
denial. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|

|
| |
KATE
Joel, listen, just don't tell
Hannah. After three years of slut
jokes, this is the perfect ammo to
use to get back at me. |
|
|
|
HANNAH and JULIE step up behind KATE. HANNAH starts LAUGHING
hysterically at KATE. KATE turns to HANNAH. |
|
|
| |
HANNAH
(laughing)
Three months? |
|
|
|
KATE starts piling in several bottles of chocolate syrup
into the cart. |
|
|
| |
JULIE
Way to be subtle, Hannah. |
|
|
|
|
JULIE pushes HANNAH out of way and stops KATE. |
|
|
| |
JULIE (cont'd)
Kate, c'mon, you like him, you
can't just not like him anymore
because he's deaf. |
|
|
|
| |
KATE
It's not because he's deaf. It's
because I'm an idiot, who followed
him for three months and had no
idea he was deaf. |
|
|
|
|
HANNAH giggles. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
| |
JOEL
Look, Kate, we're probably the
only ones who know, so just cool
down. |
|
|
|
| |
HANNAH
Oh, you silly little people you,
I've posted this on Twitter
minutes ago. |
|
|
|
|
HANNAH starts laughing, again. |
|
|
| |
KATE
(sarcastically)
Oh no, now your Twitter follower
knows all about this. |
|
|
|

| |
HANNAH
Then, I better post this on
Facebook. |
|
|
|
HANNAH pulls out her phone and starts to click around, but
KATE takes out a can of whipped cream, shakes it up, pulls
off the cap and aims it at HANNAH'S head. |
|
|

KATE
Put down the phone or I'll blow
you away. |
|
|
|
| |
HANNAH
You wouldn't dare. |
|
|
|
KATE shakes up the can and squirts a dollop of whipped cream
onto HANNAH'S cell phone. |
|
|
| |
HANNAH (cont'd)
Okay, man. Be cool, be cool. |
|
|
|
KATE puts the cap back on the can. HANNAH licks her phone
clean. |
|
|
| |
JOEL
You're gonna pay for that, right? |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
KATE tosses the can back into the cart and starts wheeling
it over to some more sweets. She stops and looks at the
cart. |
|
|
| |
KATE (cont'd)
Now I'm in the mood for something
salty. |
|
|
|
She turns the cart around and starts to wheel it off to
another part of the store. JOEL and JULIE stop her before
she can go far. |
|
|
|

|
|
|
|
|
|
| |
JOEL
Don't look at me, I'm a guy I
don't know crap. |
|
|
|

| |
JULIE
Kate, I think that you should talk
to Alex. You like him, so what's
stopping you? |
|
|
|
| |
KATE
I'll get back to you on that. |
|
|
|
|

| |
KATE
"Kate. Kate. Kate." Do you people
know how to say anything else? |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
KATE takes the already open can of whipped cream out of the
cart. |
|
|
| |
KATE (cont'd)
I'm still buying this. |
|
|
|
|
KATE starts walking away. |
|
|
| |
JOEL
Aren't you gonna put this stuff
away? |
|
|
|
| |
KATE
And put you out of a job? Never. |
|
|
|
KATE starts to walk away, again. She then stops, snaps,
turns around and grabs some cookie dough. She continues to
another part of the store. |
|
|
|
INT. SUPERMARKET - NEXT |
|
|
KATE walks up to a table covered with fruit. She searches
through the pile of fruit, grabs a plastic bag and starts
filling it with oranges. ALEX walks over on the other side
of the table with a couple of boxes. Neither of them notice
each other. ALEX bends down and starts opening one of the
boxes. KATE fills the bag with four or five oranges and
starts walking around the table. |

ALEX piles some fruit on the table as KATE shakes up the can
of whipped cream and squirts some into her mouth. ALEX bends
down and picks up some more fruit. KATE trips over ALEX and
falls on the floor. |
|

KATE (cont'd)
Oh. I'm so sorry. |
|
|
|
As she tries to get up, her hand slips on the can, squirting
herself with whipped cream. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
KATE gets up, but the can still squirts whipped cream onto
the floor. KATE picks up an apple and throws it at the can.
A perfect hit. The can stops. She wipes her face and turns
to ALEX. |

|
|
|
|
|
|
ALEX signs "IT'S OKAY". |
|
|
| |
KATE (cont'd)
So... hi, I'm Kate. |
|
|
|
|
KATE signs "K-A-T-E". |
|
|
| |
KATE (cont'd)
Am I close? |
|
|
|
|
ALEX nods his head. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
There is a long awkward silence. CHRIS walks by, KATE runs
after him and drags him over to ALEX. |
|
|
| |
KATE (cont'd)
You sign, right? |
|
|
|
| |
CHRIS
Yeah, Alex taught me a few signs
so we could get through to one
another. |
|
|
|
| |
KATE
Good, interpret please. |
|
|
|

|
|
|
|
| |
CHRIS
Yeah, but he doesn't talk that
much. He prefers to sign. |
|
|
|
| |
KATE
Yeah, and I don't sign. |
|
|
|
| |
CHRIS
(signing)
Okay, I'll interpret. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
| |
CHRIS
Just, don't talk to Alex in the
third person. Talk to him
directly. |
|
|
|
| |
KATE
I'm not Hannah, my I-Q is larger
than my bra size. |
|
|
|
|
CHRIS starts signing what KATE just said. |
|
|
| |
KATE (cont'd)
Don't tell him that! |
|
|
|
|
KATE hits CHRIS with the bag of oranges. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
| |
KATE
(to Alex)
Hi. I was wondering... er... I
wanted to know if maybe go out
sometime, kinda. |

|
|
|
ALEX signs as CHRIS tells KATE what he's signing. |
|
|
| |
CHRIS
(interpreting)
Sure. When? |
|
|
|
CHRIS interprets as KATE speaks. Only, he doesn't do it
word-for-word, but he does enough signs to properly
interpret. |
|
|

| |
KATE
How about Saturday? We could go to
a new little Italian restaurant I
know of, it just opened up where
that new little Mexican place
closed. |
|
|
|
|
ALEX signs, CHRIS interprets. |
|
|
| |
CHRIS
(interpreting)
Great. Can I pick you up at seven? |
|
|
|
|
CHRIS signs some as KATE talks. |
|
|
| |
KATE
That would be great. See ya' then. |
|
|
|
ALEX gives a thumbs up. KATE does the same and heads over to
a freezer bin with meat in it. HANNAH and JULIE swarm to
KATE, seemingly out of nowhere. |
|
|
| |
HANNAH
What he say? Or sign. |
|
|
|
| |
KATE
We're goin' to that little Italian
place off Route Six, he's picking
me up at seven. |
|
|
|
| |
JULIE
How are you getting there? |
|
|
|
| |
KATE
He drives used JEEP. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
| |
KATE
Hannah, I need to pick up a few
things first, then when I get home
I'll call you and explain some
things about the deaf community
that I know you don't know. For
instance, deaf people can't hear. |
|
|
|
KATE picks up a pack of chicken and looks at the label. JOEL
walks up to them with a price gun and stamps a new price on
the chicken. KATE looks at the new price. |
|
|

KATE
You can at least say you're sorry. |
|
|

JOEL
That's for the tubs of ice cream. |
|
|
|
|
JOEL walks into a back room behind the deli. |
|
|

KATE
That son-of-a-bitch. |
|
|

INT. LIVING ROOM - BEAUMONT RESIDENCE - NIGHT |

HANNAH and JULIE sit on the couch and watch TV. KATE comes
downstairs wearing a short pink dress. |
|
|

KATE
What do you guys think? |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
| |
HANNAH
I love it, it's perfect. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
KATE goes back upstairs. |
|
|
| |
HANNAH
How come whenever I say
something's perfect, she thinks
it's too slutty. |
|
|
|
| |
JULIE
You're a slut. Do I have to
explain that whenever we do this? |
|
|
|
| |
HANNAH
Pretty much. So, what do we know
about this Alex? |
|
|
|
| |
JULIE
He's deaf, he works at the
supermarket and he has the cutest
dimples in Tranquillo Valley. |
|
|

HANNAH
So true. I can't wait to date him. |
|
|
|

|
|
| |
HANNAH
It's Kate, her relationships don't
last more than two dates. |
|
|
|
| |
JULIE
And your's don't last more than a
two-hour movie and a stop at Grope
Point. |
|
|
|
| |
HANNAH
I resent that comment. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
| |
HANNAH
That's not the point. |
|
|
|
|
KATE comes back downstairs in another dress. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|

|
| |
KATE
Then, I'm wearing this tonight. |

HANNAH
Kate, what do you know about this
Alex guy? |
|
|
|
| |
KATE
Not too much. Just that his name
is Alex Nicholas Martin, he's a
junior at a deaf school in the
next town over, he drives a used,
tomato red JEEP he got for his
birthday, his parents and sister
can hear, and he likes to go to
McDonald's every Friday for dinner
and he always orders large fries,
a plain hamburger and a soda.

There is a knock at the door. |
|
|

KATE
Oh my god, it's him. I think I'm
gonna vomit. |
|
|
|
|
JULIE gets up and heads for the door. |
|
|
| |
JULIE
Then, I'll get the door. |
|
|
|
|
JULIE opens the door. NICK enters. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
| |
KATE
What the hell are you doing here? |
|
|
|
| |
NICK
I heard you had a date tonight
with a deaf guy. I also heard that
you followed him, stalker style,
for months and no clue he was
deaf. So, I came to rub it in your
face. |
|
|
|
|
HANNAH walks over to them. |
|
|

| |
HANNAH
Where the hell have you been?
That's old news. |
|
|
|
| |
KATE
Nick, just leave. He'll be here
any minute and I don't want the
three of you guys attacking him
the minute he walks in. |
|
|
|
| |
JULIE
We weren't gonna do that but, now
that you mention it, it sounds
like a great idea. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
ALEX walks up to the door, behind NICK. |
|
|
| |
HANNAH
Oh look, it's Alex. |
|
|
|
KATE snatches her purse of a table in the hallway and runs
to the door. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
ALEX looks confused. KATE pulls him out of the house with
her. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
NICK closes the door and they all head into the living room. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
| |
NICK
Wow. It's gonna be a disaster. |
|
|
|

| |
HANNAH
All her dates are disasters. |
|
|
|

EXT/INT. ALEX'S JEEP |
|
|
ALEX drives. KATE sits in the passenger seat. They sit in an
awkward silence. After a while, KATE taps ALEX on the
shoulder. |

KATE
(pointing at radio)
Mind if I... |
|
|
|
|
ALEX shakes his head. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
KATE turns on the car radio. Something starts playing and
KATE lies back and tries to relax. After a while, there is a
loud POP, followed by some hissing. KATE looks around to
find the source of the sound. She figures it out, a flat
tire. She taps ALEX on the shoulder. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
ALEX looks at her confused. |
|
|
| |
KATE (cont'd)
Oh... er... flat. |
|
|
|
|
KATE presses her hands together as if to flatten something. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
ALEX nods. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
KATE makes a circle with her hands and then depicts the
circle spinning. ALEX signs "TIRE". |
|
|

KATE (cont'd)
Tire. Yes, tire. |
|
|
|
ALEX pulls over to the side of the road and gets out. KATE
follows. |
|
|

EXT. STREET |
|
|
16.
|
ALEX walks around the car looking for the flat tire. KATE
follows him a while then stops at the bottom right tire. She
grabs ALEX'S jacket, stopping him. She points at the tire
and turns to him. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
ALEX kneels next to the tire. He signs "CAN YOU GET THE
SPARE TIRE?" KATE stares at him confused. He turns to her
and finger-spells "S-P-A-R-E". |
|
|

KATE (cont'd)
S. P. A. Spare, spare... spare. |
|
|
|
|
ALEX signs "TIRE." |
|
|
| |
KATE (cont'd)
Tire. Spare tire. Got it. |
|
|
|
KATE walks to the back of the JEEP. She opens the cover for
the spare tire and takes the spare out. She feels the tire
for a second and walks over to ALEX. She taps him on the
shoulder, he looks up at her and stands. She pushes him to
the side. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
KATE holds out the tire and drops it. It falls fast, like a
rock and lays on the ground, like a deflated basketball. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
ALEX feels the tire for air pressure. KATE taps him on the
shoulder, again. He looks up at her. |
|
|

KATE (cont'd)
(gesturing)
We're screwed. |
|
|
|
|
INT. LIVING ROOM - BEAUMONT RESIDENCE |
|
|
HANNAH, JULIE, and NICK sit around the room, eating popcorn
and watching a movie. |

JULIE
Do you think Kate mind that we're
eating her food and watching her
movies? |
|
|

| |
HANNAH
She wouldn't mind at all. |
|
|
|
Someone's phone starts ringing. All pull their phones out of
their pockets to see whose it is. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
The others put their phones away. JULIE answers her phone. |
|

INT. LIVING ROOM |
|
|
|
EXT. STREET |
|
|
KATE sits on the hood of the JEEP. ALEX sits in the
passenger seat. |
|
|
|

|
|

| |
KATE
Yeah, we blew a tire and the spare
is dead. Can you help us? |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
| |
KATE
Bring the spare my dad keeps in
the garage. |
|
|
|
| |
JULIE
Okay. I'll do that. But, how do I
get out there or wherever you guys
are. |
|
|
|
| |
KATE
We're like a mile away from that
little Italian place I told you
about. |
|
|
|
| |
JULIE
Okay, but how do I get there? |
|
|
|

| |
KATE
I don't know. Sit inside the tire
and have Hannah roll you over
here. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
| |
KATE
Just figure something out. Okay?
Bye. |

INT. LIVING ROOM |
|
|
|
JULIE hangs up her phone. |
|
|
| |
HANNAH
What did Kate want? |
|
|
|
| |
JULIE
She needs me to bring a spare tire
out to her. |
|
|

|
|
| |
HANNAH
I knew it. She's finally snapped.
I figured one day, after one too
many dates went wrong, she would
go nuts. |
|
|
|
| |
JULIE
Alex's JEEP blew a tire and they
don't have a spare. |
|
|
|
| |
NICK
What kind of idiot doesn't have a
spare tire? |
|
|
|
| |
JULIE
Who cares? Kate says there's a
spare in the garage, let's go find
it. |
|
|
|
| |
HANNAH
Why do we have to help? |
|
|
|

| |
JULIE
Hannah, shut up. Plus it'll take
the three of us to figure out a
way to get out there. |
|
|
|

| |
JULIE
A mile away from that little
Italian place. |
|
|

| |
NICK
The whole town's a "little Italian
place." Which one? |
|
|
|
| |
JULIE
The one over by the car wash. |
|
|
|

NICK
Oh, the LITTLE Italian place.
That's far. |
|
|

HANNAH
Well, let's get started. |
|
|
|
|
All get up and exit the room. |
|
|
| |
JULIE
I just thought of something. |
|
|
|

JULIE
They're all alone out there with
no one else to talk to but each
other and Alex doesn't speak. |
|
|
|
|
HANNAH starts laughing maniacally. |
|
|
| |
HANNAH
(laughing)
This is SO my week. |
|

EXT/INT. ALEX'S JEEP |
|
|
ALEX sits in the driver's seat. KATE sits in the passenger
seat. They both sit in an awkward silence. After a while,
KATE taps ALEX on the shoulder and he turns to see her
pointing at the car radio. |

|

|
|
ALEX nods. KATE turns on the radio. Something starts
playing. There is another period of awkward silence. KATE
taps him on the shoulder, again, and he turns to her, again. |
|

KATE (cont'd)
Do you want me to turn it up? For
you. |
|
|
|

ALEX shakes his head. |
|
|

KATE (cont'd)
This date sucks. |

|

ALEX shakes his head, again. |

Oh, c'mon, we blew a tire before
we got to the restaurant. Now, we
are waiting for the dumb-ass
friends to save us. |

ALEX shakes his head. He signs "I LIKE JUST TALKING WITH
YOU." |

He signs "I LIKE TALKING TO YOU." |
