FADE IN:

EXT. STATE PENITENTIARY - DAY

Rain hammers asphalt. Drips from razor wire atop a steep
fence. Dark clouds loom large over the massive structure.

INT. PRISON INTERVIEW ROOM - DAY

RANDY JENKINS, late (20's), dirty prison orange jumpsuit,
sullen eyes, physically fit, slumps in a chair. He picks at
jaundice-colored foam through a crack in the vinyl seat.

PEN SCRATCHES fill the otherwise silent room.

DR. PENELOPE ROBERTS, (30's), conservative black suit, sandy
hair in a tight bun, takes copious notes from her seat
caddy-corner to Randy.

                       DR. ROBERTS
What year do you think it is?

                       RANDY
Twenty eleven, I'm not crazy.

                       DR. ROBERTS
So, how many times have we had
this conversation?

                       RANDY
God, I don't even know anymore.
About two years going forward and
another two since things started
going back.

                       DR. ROBERTS
That's quite a story.

                       RANDY
When you live your life yesterday
by yesterday, it sort of changes
your perspective.

                       DR. ROBERTS
Tell me about when your life
started going backwards.

2.

INT. RANDY'S TRAILER BEDROOM - MORNING

                       RANDY (V.O.)
It all began the day I died.

DRIP...DRIP...DRIP...

Light emerges through the blinks of slowly opening eyes.

Randy, now 30, disheveled, a face that reveals the burden of
a life poorly lived, groggily pops up and wipes water from
his face.

A small cluttered bookshelf filled with dusty framed
pictures. Randy's eyes meet a picture of two kids, himself
and Brian Rivers, smiling in their baseball uniforms.

Another drop hits his nose. He flails his arm, knocking to
the picture to the floor, cracking the glass frame.

                       RANDY
Dammit, sorry Brian!

He picks up the picture and a small pile of broken glass.

His eyes shift to the nightstand. Water covers his now dead
alarm clock and cell phone.

                       RANDY
No, no, no, no!

He grabs his cell and slaps it with his hand. Nothing.

                       RANDY
Son of a bitch.

He hurries to the closet and grabs a pair of pants, falls
over as he attempts to put them on.

INT. RANDY'S TRAILER KITCHEN/LIVING ROOM

A pig's sty. Trash overflows the waste basket, dishes fill
the sink, and food stains the counter.

He opens the fridge and regards a box of nauseatingly old
Chinese food. He grabs the box and smells. A disgusted look.
The box flies into the trash.

                       RANDY
No time to eat....Shit, what time
is it?

He hurries to his meager television and turns it on.

3.

ON TELEVISION

An Anchorwoman, JENNIFER ANDERSON, somber, sits at her
cheap, brown, plastic news desk. Sky blue wallpaper fills
the background.

                       JENNIFER ANDERSON (V.O.)
Our top story this hour--new
details are emerging about
American Airlines Flight 947,
which crashed just outside Cedar
Falls two days ago in the early
morning hours.

IMAGES

of a horrific plane crash. A MANGLED PLANE in the middle of
a field. Dark overcast clouds. Police and Firefighters
examine smoldering wreckage.

BACK TO SCENE

POUNDING at the door. Randy groans, massages his forehead.

More BANGS. Silverware rattles in the sink.

Randy ambles to the door and swings it open. GERTY BROWN,
50's, short, obnoxious pink snowflake sweater, deep creases
on her sour face, takes a cigarette out of her mouth.

                       RANDY
Morning.

Gerty blows a cloud of smoke in his face.

                       GERTY
Insufficient funds.

Randy blinks.

                       GERTY
Do I need to call your P.O.?

                       RANDY
I get paid Friday, so I'll have it
by then at the latest. I mean
absolute latest.

                       GERTY
Five-hundred-seventy-five dollars
in my hand by Friday or you'll be
living in a cardboard box.

4.

Randy eyes the trailers surrounding his.

                       RANDY
So, I'm getting an upgrade?

Getty drops her cigarette in his coffee. She stalks away.
Randy, indifferent, steps back inside and closes the door.

THE PHONE RINGS. His machine answers.

                       DONNA (V.O.)
Randy, you there? Why aren't you
answering your cell? I'm just
calling to make sure you
understand we are leaving at
seven-thirty a.m. on the dot,
tomorrow. Georgia's a long ways
away and Henry wont have many
chances to see you...

Randy's brow scrunches. He takes a pen and writes "7:30" on
his hand.

EXT. TRAILER PARK - MORNING

Randy sits in his red rusty Mazda pickup, CRANKS an engine
that won't turn over. Randy slumps. Turns the key again.
CRANK CRANK CRA--

INT. SWIFT CO MEAT CUTTING ROOM - DAY

A MACHINE LOUDLY RIPS THROUGH COW FLESH

Randy fidgets with his apron, hustles through the large
warehouse. Slabs of beef everywhere.

Randy gets in an assembly line. He puts on goggles and pulls
out a knife.

The man next to him, BOBBY, large, with thick sideburns and
decked in the same uniform, turns.

                       BOBBY
Forget to turn the volume up on
the alarm again?

                       RANDY
Nah, snooze button today.

5.

                       BOBBY
I swear Randy, you're gonna be
late for your own funeral.

                       RANDY
Alright mom, take it easy.

Bobby scoffs.

                       BOBBY
Alberto was looking for you.

Randy takes a tone of mock nervousness.

                       RANDY
I'm shaking like a turkey on
Thanksgiving eve. Alberto can go
fu--

Bobby COUGHS into his fist. Randy takes the hint.

He turns. ALBERTO, short, thin, wearing a suit and glasses
stands behind him.

Alberto raises his fingers and motions Randy to follow.
Randy slinks towards him.

INT. ALBERTO'S OFFICE - MOMENTS LATER

Sand sifts through a miniature hourglass on the desk.

Alberto leans forward in a comfy leather chair on the boss's
side. Randy sits across from him, in a small plastic chair.

                       RANDY
Traffic was really bad.

Alberto purses his lips and shakes his head.

                       ALBERTO
You look worse than the ground
chuck we threw out Tuesday...smell
worse too.

                       RANDY
Must be my new cologne.

                       ALBERTO
I'm a nice guy, I try to do what I
can for people. There are
twenty-eight other felons working
here and they show up on time. I'm
sorry, I have no choice but to let

                       ALBERTO (cont'd)
you go.

Randy looks at the hour glass. The last grains of sand slip
to the bottom.

EXT. SUBURBAN STREET - DAY

Randy pulls his truck to a stop and gets out.

He meanders across the street to the most run down house on
the block.

A rusty blue '72 Camero with a racing stripe sits in the
driveway.

He gets to the door and KNOCKS.

                       RANDY
Justin? You home?

No answer.

INT. JUSTIN'S LIVING ROOM - CONTINUOUS

Cheap mismatched furniture litter a man cave.

The door opens and Randy steps in. A paint can, attached to
a wire, drops down and THUMPS him on the head, staggers him.

A DARK FIGURE grabs Randy and hurls him to the ground. Gets
on top of him and raises a baseball bat.

Randy looks into the maniacal eyes of JUSTIN COOPER, 30's,
dirty blond, a fuck the world attitude which probably
explains the fresh shiner on his left eye.

                       RANDY
Justin, it's me! It's Randy!

Randy groggily rubs his head. Justin lowers the bat and
stands.

                       JUSTIN
      (jokes)
Sorry, if I knew it was you I
would have used a cinder block.

Randy shuffles to the couch and takes a seat. A glass mirror
with a line of coke rests on the table.

7.

                       RANDY
You haven't been answering your
phone.

                       JUSTIN
Yeah, I've had things going on.

Randy regards Justin's black eye.

                       RANDY
Listen, I was wondering if I could
get some of that money I loaned
you a little early?

                       JUSTIN
Wish I could, it's all tied up in
medical fees. Damn doctors. You
know I'm good for it.

                       RANDY
How's your dad doing?

                       JUSTIN
Same old cantankerous shit, plus
colon cancer.

                       RANDY
Sounds like life's shitty all
around.

Justin sits and puts his arm around Randy.

                       JUSTIN
Let's go out tonight, on me.

INT. THE POUR HOUSE - NIGHT

The bar hops with PEOPLE and MUSIC.

Three guys play pool at the nearest table. Two older biker
chicks by the jukebox skim through songs.

The bar is filled, elbow to elbow with drinks in front. A
BASEBALL GAME ON TELEVISION.

Randy, Justin, and Bobby recline at their table with a
basket of chips, two empty pitchers of beer and a third
that's half empty.

                       RANDY
I just can't believe they would
take him away like that. What's a
kid supposed to do without his

                       JUSTIN
It's a raw deal.

                       BOBBY
Why Georgia?

                       RANDY
Clay's taking some sheriff's job
in a Podunk town out there. Pays
fifteen thousand more than he's
making here.

                       JUSTIN
Prick gets promoted for bustin'
kids doing the same shit he did.

                       RANDY
Clay used to be a real cool guy,
wonder what happened to him?

                       JUSTIN
Shit if I know.

                       BOBBY
      (to Randy)
Let me see some chips.

Randy extends his right arm. A LOUD POP. Randy recoils,
grabs his right shoulder, winces in pain.

                       BOBBY
Jesus, what happened?

                       JUSTIN
Rotator cuff.

Justin hands the chips to Bobby.

                       RANDY
Bottom of the ninth, division
championship on the line, against
Richmond, their third baseman
drove one deep to the wall, I went
up to get it, slammed my shoulder.
Haven't played since.

                       BOBBY
Damn shame.

9.

                       RANDY
      (proud)
Yeah, but we won. Can't take that
away.

                       BOBBY
Was it worth it?

Randy's eyes shift back and forth, pondering.

The front door to the bar opens. LUANNE, striking, slim,
early (20's) and two friends, BRUNETTE AND REDHEAD saunter
in. Justin notices.

                       JUSTIN
Looky what the kitty-kat dragged
in.

Bobby and Randy turn. The three women notice. Luanne shoots
Randy a flirtatious smile.

Randy looks down at the "7:30" printed on his hand, stands
up.

                       RANDY
Sorry guys, got a big day
tomorrow.

                       JUSTIN
C'mon, don't leave me alone with
Bobby as a wing man.

                       BOBBY
Thanks.

                       JUSTIN
Just stay for one drink.

Randy's eyes contemplate.

INT. POUR HOUSE - LATER

Randy and Luanne, away from everyone else at the bar, pound
a shot and slam the glasses down.

                       LUANNE
Sounds like you're having a really
shitty day.

Randy ogles her up and down.

10.

                       RANDY
I think it will end better than it
started.

                       LUANNE
I have a confession.

                       RANDY
What's that?

                       LUANNE
My little brother used to have
your poster in his room.
(smiles)
I can't wait to tell him what we
did tonight.

EXT. DIRT ROAD - NIGHT

Randy speeds his truck down a dark, isolated dirt road. LOUD
MUSIC PLAYS.

INT. RANDY'S TRUCK

Luanne, in the passenger seat, bobs her head in Randy's lap.

                       RANDY
      (euphorically)
Oh yeah, baby.

Randy has a distant, pleasured look as he leans back and
closes his eyes.

INTERCUT

DONNA JENKINS, (30's), radiant, sweet natured, stands
glowing in her wedding dress. She smiles as Randy, dressed
in his tux, nervously approaches.

BACK TO SCENE

The truck drifts. Randy quickly opens his eyes and grabs the
wheel. Luanne keeps going, oblivious.

Randy's eyes flutter shut. He loses consciousness.

EXT. DIRT ROAD

The truck swerves one way and then another. It loses
control, turns sideways and FLIPS VIOLENTLY end over end.

The pickup tumbles to a stop in a FURY OF SMOKE.

11.

INT. RANDY'S TRUCK

Luanne's body lies contorted, covered in blood.

Randy struggles to move, gravely injured.

His eyebrows shoot up, mortified, as he sees Luanne.

                       RANDY
I'm sorry...

Randy labors to breathe. He takes one last gulp of air and
his eyes close.

A BRIGHT WHITE LIGHT ENVELOPS THE SCREEN

EXT. FILMORE PARK - DAY

FLASHBACK

                       DR. ROBERTS (V.O.)
Tell me about your childhood --
what was it like growing up?

                       RANDY (V.O.)
I don't know where to start.

RANDY (TEEN), dirty baseball uniform, glove in hand, tosses
the ball to BRIAN RIVERS, same age, vibrant, outgoing, same
uniform.

                       DR. ROBERTS (V.O.)
What's the first thing that comes
to mind?

                       RANDY (TEEN)
You have no idea what you're
talking about!

                       BRIAN
Bazooka is way better than Big
League Chew!

                       RANDY (TEEN)
Great game today.

                       BRIAN
Man, that was an amazing catch you
had in the third.

12.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
Yeah, but I went O for four at the
plate.

Brian tucks his glove and paces to Randy, picks up a bat and
hands it to him.

                       BRIAN
Show me your stance.

Randy raises his bat and gets in position.

                       BRIAN
See, that's your problem.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
What?

                       BRIAN
Your legs are like two-by-fours.
You gotta bend your knees. Your
power is in the hips.

Brian grabs the bat and shows him.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
You're a natural -- I hope I'm as
good as you one day.

                       BRIAN
Hey, your mom's here.

Randy turns.

A blue van speeds into the lot and parks. LUCY JENKINS, late
30's, sensible and thin, exits the van. Her face is a
pathetic mess of despair.

                       RANDY (V.O.)
There was a huge wreck. My dad
died driving his truck on the
Three-Eighty.

                       DR. ROBERTS (V.O.)
I can't imagine what that must
have been like.

                                         END FLASHBACK

INT. RANDY'S BEDROOM - MORNING

Blackness.

13.

DRIP...DRIP...DRIP...

Light emerges through the blinks of slowly opening eyes.

Randy, stunned, flips out of the lumpy bed onto the floor
and eyes the room, brow raised, jaw open.

He scans the room. He rubs his forearm. Pinches his cheek.

                       RANDY
      (mumbles)
It wasn't real. It wasn't real.

KITCHEN/LIVING ROOM

Randy peers warily through the bedroom door.

He shuffles into the kitchen and opens the fridge. He
freezes at the sight of the old Chinese food, regards it
poorly. The box flies into the trash.

Randy pours himself a glass of old coffee and takes a couple
Advil.

Randy turns on the

TELEVISION

Jennifer Anderson sits at her desk, somber.

                       JENNIFER ANDERSON (V.O.)
Our top story at this hour--new
details are emerging about
American Airlines Flight 947,
which crashed just outside Cedar
Falls two days ago in the early
morning hours.

IMAGES

of a horrific plane crash. A mangled plane in the middle of
a field. Dark overcast clouds. Police and Firefighters
examine smoldering wreckage.

RANDY

Randy watches the news in disbelief.

POUNDING at the door. Randy turns and hurries to the door.

BANG BANG BANG! Silverware rattles in the sink. Randy swings
the door open to reveal Gerty Brown, who removes the
cigarette from her mouth.

14.

                       RANDY
      (confused)
What now?

                       GERTY
Insufficient funds.

Randy looks past her. There's his truck, not wrecked.

                       GERTY
Do I need to call your P.O.?

                       RANDY
We talked about this yesterday.

Gerty shoots him an acid look.

                       GERTY
Don't even start, cowboy. I'm not
in the mood.

                       RANDY
I told you I get paid Friday--

                       GERTY
--You haven't told me anything!
Friday, have the money then or
you'll be living in a cardboard
box.

Randy is unsure what to say. She reaches to put her
cigarette in Randy's coffee, but he quickly pulls away.

                       RANDY
I got it.

She stalks away. Randy goes back inside and closes the door.

The PHONE RINGS. Once again, Randy does not answer. The
machine picks up.

                       DONNA (V.O.)
Randy, you there? Why aren't you
answering your cell? I'm just
calling to let you understand we
are leaving at seven thirty a.m.
on the dot, tomorrow...

                       RANDY
What the hell's going on?

15.

INT. SWIFTCO MEAT CUTTING ROOM - MOMENTS LATER

A MACHINE LOUDLY RIPS THROUGH COW FLESH

Randy adjusts his apron as he hurries through the large
warehouse. Slabs of beef everywhere.

Randy gets in a line. He puts on his goggles and pulls out
his knife.

Bobby, standing next to Randy, turns.

                       BOBBY
Forget to turn the volume up on
your alarm again?

                       RANDY
      (unsure)
Snooze today.

Bobby cuts into a slab of meat. Randy turns and sees Alberto
approach.

                       BOBBY
I swear Randy, you're gonna be
late for your own funeral.

                       RANDY
Maybe I already am.

EXT. SUBURBAN STREET - DAY

Randy pulls his truck to a stop and gets out. He stares down
Justin's front door, a curious, yet expecting look.

He makes his way to the porch and stops. He KNOCKS.

                       RANDY
      (unsure)
Justin?

No answer.

Randy opens the door, but doesn't enter. The paint can
crashes to the floor, just misses Randy.

Justin rushes in with a baseball bat. He quickly lowers it,
surprised.

                       JUSTIN
Randy?

16.

INT. THE POUR HOUSE - NIGHT

The bar hops with PEOPLE and MUSIC.

Three guys play pool at the nearest table. Two older biker
chicks by the jukebox skim through songs.

The bar is filled, elbow to elbow with drinks in front of
them. A BASEBALL GAME ON TELEVISION.

Randy, Justin, and Bobby sit at their table. Two empty
pitchers in front of them and a third that's half empty.

                       BOBBY
So how did you get that black eye?

                       JUSTIN
      (brags)
I got into it with these two fags
at Dennigan's. You should see what
they look like.

                       BOBBY
Shit, you're always getting into
trouble.

Randy fidgets. He pulls out a pen and writes "7:30am" on his
palm.

                       JUSTIN
      (to Randy)
What's up your ass tonight?

                       RANDY
I've been having the craziest case
of deja vu all day. I can't shake
it.

                       BOBBY
      (chuckles)
Shoulda worn a condom.

                       JUSTIN
That's when you dream something
before it happens, dumb shit.

                       BOBBY
Dumb shit? You're the one who left
the stove on and almost burnt his
house down.

                       JUSTIN
Faulty pilot light, not my fault.

17.

                       BOBBY
It never is. Hey Randy, let me see
some chips.

Randy extends his right arm, thinks better of it, then grabs
them with his left. He hands them to Bobby.

                       BOBBY
Thanks buddy.

The front door to the bar opens and Luanne, Brunette and
Redhead enter. Randy stares at Luanne in shock as she
saunters towards the bar.

Randy's stomach curls. He pops up, knocks his chair over.

HYPERVENTILATING. Randy squeezes his hands against his
skull.

                       RANDY
      (mumbles)
This can't be happening. This
can't be happening.

                       JUSTIN
Whoa, whoa, settle down, boy.

                       BOBBY
You doin' alright?

                       RANDY
No, I'm not DOING ALRIGHT, GOD
DAMMIT!

The talking has stopped. All eyes on Randy. MUSIC from the
jukebox is the only sound.

                       BOBBY
What the hell's wrong with you?

Randy clumsily stumbles, knocks over anything in his way,
passes Luanne. They exchange a glance before Randy bolts out
the door.

EXT. RANDY'S TRAILER PORCH - NIGHT

Randy paces back and forth. A cigarette smolders in his
mouth. The trailer is located in a poor, redneck park,
several other trailers surround his.

                       RANDY
What the fuck is going on?

18.

Randy takes a deep drag and sits on his steps.

                       RANDY
God damn episode of the X-Files.
Everything was fucking the same!
Everything!

INT. RANDY'S TRAILER BEDROOM - NIGHT

Randy stares at a photo of Donna and Henry, smiling. He
places it down.

Randy takes his shoes off and shuffles to the bed. He gets
under the covers and shuts off his lamp.

DRIP...DRIP...

                       RANDY
God dammit!

EXT. SCHOOL PARKING LOT - DAY

FLASHBACK

Randy (Teen) shuffles through the busy lot. Brian rushes up
to him.

                       DR. ROBERTS (V.O.)
What was it liked after your dad
passed away?

                       RANDY (V.O.)
Everything changed, you know.
Brian was the one that was really
there for me.

Brian punches Randy on the shoulder.

                       BRIAN
Look who's back.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
      (sarcastic)
Where are the confetti and
balloons?

                       BRIAN
Everyone doing alright?

19.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
Yeah, I guess. My mom's had to
pick up a lot more hours at the
hospital. Jamie is hanging in
there. I have to take care of her
more.

                       BRIAN
Just remember, you've got friends.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
Thanks, I know.

Justin's blue 72 Camaro, a few years newer than the last
time we saw it, zooms past them. Screeches into a parking
spot.

Randy and Brian watch it.

JUSTIN (TEEN), younger, but with the same fuck the world
attitude, hops out the driver's side.

DONNA (TEEN) the smart and pretty girl who always falls for
the bad boys, easily 3 years younger than Justin, hops out
the passenger side.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
      (to Brian)
How long's that been going on?

                       BRIAN
Three weeks too long.

Justin leans in and gives Donna a passionate kiss. Brian
squirms.

                       JUSTIN (TEEN)
See ya after school, babe.

                       DONNA (TEEN)
Ditching again?

                       JUSTIN (TEEN)
I got better things to do.

Donna smiles and waves goodbye. CLAY (TEEN), Robin to
Justin's Batman, a rough and tumble kid himself hurries
over.

Justin and Clay hop in the car and peel away.

                                         END FLASHBACK

20.

INT. RANDY'S TRAILER BEDROOM - MORNING

MUSIC PLAYS

                       DR. ROBERTS (V.O.)
Then you were back...again?

                       RANDY (V.O.)
I thought it would be the next
day. But that would be one I'd
never see.

Light emerges through the blinks of slowly opening eyes.

Randy fumbles to turn the ALARM off. Alone in bed, he
springs up.

                       RANDY
Shit! No, no, no! I'm late!

He stumbles out of bed to his closet and frantically puts on
clothes.

INT. RANDY'S TRUCK - MORNING

Randy rips down a quiet, neighborhood street. Dodges a
PAPERBOY on a bike.

He checks his watch: "7:29 a.m."

                       RANDY
Donna's gonna kill me.

He lurches up to the curb in front of a cozy little
two-story house. He eyes a mid-size S.U.V. and U-Haul in the
driveway.

Randy grabs the handle but pauses when the front door to the
house opens.

CLAY THOMPSON, (30's), stubbly beard, white cowboy hat,
easily mistakable for a Levi's Jeans model, carrying an
orange toy gun, hurries out.

                       RANDY
What the--?

Clay turns and aims as a hail of darts PEPPER him. He drops
to his knees, clutches his chest.

21.

HENRY JENKINS, (11), appears in the doorway. He triumphantly
holsters the dart gun in his waistband. Behind him, Donna
shoos him out the door.

                       CLAY
You got me!

Randy hops out of the truck.

EXT. DRIVEWAY

Henry, Donna and Clay walk towards the SUV. Randy jogs up
the pavement.

                       RANDY
Hey! Hey! I made it!

Everyone looks up, shocked.

                       RANDY
I caught you guys before you left.

                       DONNA
Randy? What are you doing here?

                       RANDY
I'm glad you're running late.
Henry, great to see you.

Randy rubs the top of Henry's head.

                       HENRY
      (wary)
Hey, Randy.

                       RANDY
You can call me Dad, you know?

                       HENRY
I know, Randy.

                       DONNA
We're not running late.

                       RANDY
Really?

                       DONNA
      (irritated)
We're leaving the day after
tomorrow -- I've left a dozen
messages.

22.

                       RANDY
I got them! You said Friday!

There's an awkward pause. Everyone's confused.

                       CLAY
Hey, Henry, would you get the
extra darts from the upstairs bin?

Henry's gaze flickers amongst the adults.

                       HENRY
Fine.

Henry scuttles away.

                       RANDY
What's going on? What's the
problem?

                       CLAY
I was actually about to ask the
same thing.

                       RANDY
I'm here to see you guys off and
you're treating me like a space
alien.

Donna and Clay exchange glances.

                       DONNA
Clay, would you give us a minute?

                       CLAY
Sure, I'll keep Henry inside.

Clay departs. Donna turns to Randy, speaks quietly.

                       DONNA
Are you high again? I told you, I
won't let you see Henry like that.

                       RANDY
What? No, I promise I'm not!

                       DONNA
Maybe you should call Dr. Roberts.

                       RANDY
Maybe you should stop treating me
like a crazy person.

23.

                       DONNA
What day of the week do you think
it is?

Randy, mouth ajar, shakes his head. He demurs.

                       DONNA
It's Wednesday.

                       RANDY
Then where are you going?

                       DONNA
Not that it's your business but we
were driving down to have lunch
with Clay's mother.

                       RANDY
Oh.

                       DONNA
If you want to visit Henry
tomorrow call me tonight when
you've calmed down and sorted
things out.

No answer. Donna struts back to the house. Randy watches
helplessly.

INT. RANDY'S TRUCK - NIGHT

COMMERCIALS PLAY on the radio.

Randy's eyes glazed, his face pale and sweaty, shakes his
head.

                       RANDY
      (mimics Donna)
Are you high again? I told you, I
wont let you see Henry like that.

Randy leans down and takes a line of cocaine off a pocket
mirror.

Randy rummages through his glove box.

Amidst the junk he emerges with a business card: "Dr.
Penelope Roberts".

24.

                       RANDY
      (mimics Donna)
I think you should call Dr.
Roberts.

The commercials end. Guitar fades in. A short melody plucked
in quick succession. A keyboard washes over it. Randy's eyes
light up.

He spots a lighter on the passenger seat. He glances in the
rear view at a gas can in the truck bed. He crumples Dr.
Roberts' card and tosses it.

                       RANDY
She wants to treat me like I'm
crazy! I'll show her crazy!

INT. RANDY'S TRAILER BEDROOM - MOMENTS LATER

Randy throws his crummy posters on top of a pile of junk
amassed on his bed. Then his baseball trophies. Bathroom
stuff, towels, dishes. He tosses anything he can find.

All the while, Randy SINGS merrily, badly, maniacally.

                       RANDY
WATCH OUT! You might get what
you're after! Cool, baby! Dreams
walking in broad daylight! I'm an
ordinary guy!

He picks up the can of gasoline.

INT. RANDY'S TRAILER KITCHEN/LIVING ROOM

Randy leaves a trail of gasoline as he backs in toward a
second heap of junk on the sofa.

                       RANDY
Here's your ticket, pack your
bags, it's time for jumpin'
overboard! Transportation is here!

He inverts the can over the sofa and bangs out every last
drop. SHOUTS a lyric each time he smacks it.

                       RANDY
There! Has! Got! To Be! A! Way!

He chucks the can at the t.v. set, knocking it over. He
moves to the front door, pulls the lighter. SPARKS it.

25.

                       RANDY
Burning down the house!

EXT. RANDY'S TRAILER - NIGHT

Randy strolls out his door. Flames cook the trailer's wooden
frame. He reaches his truck and gets in.

Gerty, bathrobe on, hurries from her trailer and down the
driveway.

                       GERTY
What the hell's going on?

Randy starts the truck. He rolls his window down.

                       RANDY
Rent's going to be late this
month.

                       GERTY
You son of a--!

Randy rolls his window up and pulls the truck away. A thick
plume of smoke billows behind him.

EXT. ISOLATED PARK - NIGHT

Randy lies on a steel bench, scared and shivering. A picture
of Henry and Donna, the autographed baseball, and the
picture of Brian are bundled in his arms.

INT. TEEN RANDY'S LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

FLASHBACK

Randy (Teen) reclines on the couch watching TELEVISION.

                       DR. ROBERTS (V.O.)
Sounds like you had a lot more
responsibility. What was that
like?

                       RANDY (V.O.)
Not being able to do what you want
to do really sucked. I held that
against my mom and Jamie for a
long time. I had to become an
adult to realize it wasn't their
fault.

26.

JAMIE (KID), 10, precocious with pigtails, shuffles in.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
Hey.

                       JAMIE (KID)
You know when mom's getting home?

                       RANDY (TEEN)
She's working late. You hungry?

Jamie sadly nods her head yes.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
I'll make you some mac and cheese.

Randy and Jamie exchange a smile.

PHONE RINGS. Randy answers.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
Hello?
(beat)
What?
(beat)
I'm at home watching Jamie.
(beat)
Okay, I'll be right there.

EXT. SUBURBAN STREET

Randy swiftly pedals his bike down the sleepy street. He
stops and gazes around.

Brian pedals his bike from an adjacent street. He meets
Randy.

                       BRIAN
Thanks for coming.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
No problem.

                       BRIAN
So which house is his?

                       RANDY (TEEN)
This way.

Randy pedals, Brian follows.

END OF BLOCK

27.

Randy and Brian stop their bikes in front of...

JUSTIN (TEEN)'S HOUSE

A redneck hellhole lies in front of them. Lights on. A large
party inside. The 72 Camaro in the driveway.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
That's it.

Randy and Brian pedal to the house and dump their bikes on
the lawn.

GUNSHOTS!

Brian and randy hurry around back.

Justin, smoking gun in hand, has a smirk on his face. Clay
stands next to him.

On the fence ten feet away, a row of shot beer bottles.

                       CLAY (TEEN)
Holy shit, that thing's loud!

Justin and Clay notice Randy and Brian.

                       JUSTIN (TEEN)
Welcome to the party, beer's in
the fridge.

Brian marches toward Justin.

                       BRIAN
Where's Donna?

                       JUSTIN (TEEN)
Relax, everything's cool.

Brian ignores him and marches into the house. Randy follows.

INT. TEEN JUSTIN'S LIVING ROOM

Cheap off colored furniture contrasted against the purple
glow of a black light.

Brian and Randy scour through a sea of party goers.

                       BRIAN
Has anyone seen Donna Rivers?

RANDOM GUY turns to Brian.

28.

                       RANDOM GUY
She's been hogging the bathroom
for like twenty minutes, dude.

Brian and Randy hurry to the bathroom. Brian KNOCKS.

                       BRIAN
Donna? You in the there?

LIGHT MOANING comes from the bathroom.

Justin and Clay approach.

                       CLAY (TEEN)
Relax guys, she just had a little
too much to drink.

                       BRIAN
Is there a key to get in?

                       JUSTIN (TEEN)
Nope, locks from the inside.

Brian pounds on the door.

                       BRIAN
Donna? You alright? Say something?

No sound from the bathroom. Brian delivers two swift kicks
to the door.

                       JUSTIN (TEEN)
The fuck you doing?!

The door bursts open. Donna, lies unconscious face down, a
pool of vomit beneath her.

                       JUSTIN (TEEN)
You broke my fucking door!

Brian and Randy rush in, lift Donna up. They carry her out
of the bathroom.

                       BRIAN
Send me the bill.

Justin steams as he watches Brian and Randy carry Donna out
of the house.

                                         END FLASHBACK

29.

INT. RANDY'S BEDROOM - MORNING

Randy lies in bed asleep. ALARM CLOCK BEEPS. He groggily
opens his eyes and looks at the time, "6:30am".

                       RANDY
      (mumbles)
What the--? No...no...no.

Randy pulls the alarm clock to his face, mystified. He turns
the BEEPING off and gets out of bed.

INT. RANDY'S TRAILER KITCHEN/LIVING ROOM - MOMENTS LATER

Randy slinks in. His movements are careful and measured. He
picks up a dirty pan on the counter, as if to defend
himself. He opens the fridge.

The box of Chinese food is back. Like the villain in a
horror movie, it just won't go away.

To his surprise, the food is fresh.

Randy puts the food down and steps into the living room. He
grabs the remote and turns on the

TELEVISION

Jennifer Anderson sits at her news desk, prim and proper as
always.

                       JENNIFER ANDERSON
Our top story this morning, the
numbers for last night's record
lottery are--

Randy's wheels turn.

EXT. COUNTRY ROAD - MORNING

Randy's truck tears down the highway. Rain pelts a sign:
Highway 380".

INT. RANDY'S TRUCK

Randy presses his cell phone to his ear.

                       RANDY
      (desperate)
No, listen, you can't let flight
947 leave!
(sighs)

30.

                       RANDY (cont'd)
I know threatening an aircraft is
a felony! I'm not prank calling!
Something very bad is gonna
happen.
(slaps his head)
Don't hang up on me!

Randy's face droops. He tosses his phone on the passenger
seat.

EXT. REMOTE FIELD - MORNING

Randy plows his truck through a hilly field. Rain drizzles
down. THUNDER and LIGHTNING illuminate the sky. No one else
in sight.

The truck crawls to a stop.

INT. RANDY'S TRUCK

Randy KILLS THE ENGINE; lights turn off. He opens the door.

EXT. REMOTE FIELD

Randy hops out and gazes at the lonely darkness.

Water drips down his brow, his eyes narrowed and lips
clinched. He checks his watch.

                       RANDY
I'm crazy. I've got to be fucking
crazy.

A STRONG GUST OF WIND BLOWS THROUGH.

Randy looks up.

On the horizon a bright, blinking airplane light flashes
rheumatically. It moves closer, through the clouds.

Randy's mouth jitters.

METAL TEARS from the plane. The blinking light descends
rapidly.

The pouring rain has turned the ground into a mud bath.
Randy stumbles towards the driver's door.

LOUD MECHANICAL NOISES rip through the air. It's on a crash
course with Randy.

31.

INT. RANDY'S TRUCK

Randy opens the door and jumps in. He fumbles to get the
keys. He jams them in the ignition and STARTS THE ENGINE.
The lights pop on.

REAR VIEW MIRROR

The reflection of the airplane tail spins down to earth.

                       RANDY (O.S.)
Oh fuck. Oh fuck. Oh fuck.

Randy hits the gas. The ENGINE REVS LOUDLY.

EXT. REMOTE FIELD

The TRUCK SPITS MUD as it tears away.

The airplane spirals down. One of the wings breaks off and
slingshots to the ground, narrowly missing Randy. He swerves
over a hill and several bumps.

A FIERY EXPLOSION. Chunks of metal and earth fly in every
visible direction.

INT. RANDY'S TRUCK

Randy's chest heaves with panicked breaths.

EXT. REMOTE FIELD

The truck stops a safe distance away.

ROARING FLAMES engulf the wreckage.

Randy opens the truck door and steps out. A WOMAN'S SCREAM
VIOLENTLY ECHOES through the field. Randy sprints towards
the plane.

An EXPLOSION rocks the wreckage. A fireball shoots towards
him. He dives to the ground, narrowly avoids the flames.

RANDY'S

jaw contorts and scrunches. The sickly glow of SMOLDERING
FIRE reflects off his face.

INT. RANDY'S TRUCK - MOMENTS LATER

Randy drives down a country road. Flames from the plane
crash glow in the background.

32.

Fire Trucks, Ambulances, and Police Cars race towards the
wreck, SIRENS BLARE. They pass and fade into the distance.

Randy sobs, his face contorted in a pathetic mess.

                       RANDY
      (quickly)
Holy shit! What do I do? What do I
do?

Randy wipes his tears. A sudden look of realization.

INT. DONNA AND CLAY'S LIVING ROOM - DAY

Rows of scattered moving boxes fill the room. Donna and
Henry meander about, finishing the last of the packing.

Henry reaches in a box and pulls out a picture of Brian and
Donna (Teen), all smiles, at a small town carnival.

Donna approaches, notices the photo.

                       HENRY
Who's that?

                       DONNA
That's me and your Uncle Brian.

                       HENRY
How come we never see him?

                       DONNA
He's not with us anymore.

Donna's smile flattens, eyes water.

RAPID KNOCKS AT THE DOOR

Donna hurries to the door and answers. Randy stands there,
soaked from head to toe, a total train wreck.

                       DONNA
Randy! What the blazes are you
doing here?

                       RANDY
Nice to see you too.

                       DONNA
Come inside -- you're soaking wet.

Donna ushers him inside. Henry curiously ogles his father.

33.

                       HENRY
Hey, Randy.

                       RANDY
Henry!

Randy gives him a gigantic hug, soaking him too.

                       DONNA
Henry, go finish packing your room
while your dad and I talk.

Henry scuttles to his room.

                       RANDY
Clay here?

                       DONNA
He just left a minute ago. What's
wrong? You wouldn't be here unless
something's wrong.

                       RANDY
Donna, you're the only person in
the world I trust.

                       DONNA
Boy, you really do have problems.

                       RANDY
I'm being serious!

                       DONNA
Whatever's going on, you can tell
me.

Randy turns away; blinks back the water brimming in his
eyes.

                       DONNA
You alright?

He opens his mouth; it takes a while before the words come
out.

                       RANDY
No, I'm not alright! I died three
days ago and everyday since has
gone backwards!

Donna looks at him as if he has lost his mind.

34.

                       DONNA
      (slowly)
You died and every day is going
backwards?

                       RANDY
Yeah.

Donna stares at Randy in an almost rage. Randy looks back
pleadingly.

                       DONNA
Are you high right now? You are,
aren't you? What is it this
time--speed, is it speed or is it
coke?

Randy leans back and raises his hands.

                       RANDY
I'm not on drugs!

                       DONNA
Cause you sound like you are.

                       RANDY
That's the God's honest truth!

                       DONNA
You don't believe in God.

                       RANDY
Well, I'm not.

                       DONNA
Can I test you?

                       RANDY
      (frustrated)
I knew this was a mistake.

Randy marches towards the door.

                       DONNA
Randy, get back here!
(flustered)
You come in here, looking like a
complete train wreck and tell me
you're a time traveling zombie,
how do you expect me to react?

Randy stops, turns around. Desperate.

35.

                       RANDY
I know I sound crazy, but this is
really happening to me!

                       DONNA
Ok, ok calm down, we'll figure
this out.

                       HENRY (O.S.)
Mom?

                       DONNA
I'll be right there.

                       RANDY
I'm sorry.

                       DONNA
I have some pop and juice. Help
yourself.

Donna stands and heads up the stairs. Randy goes to the
fridge, looks through it, grabs a small bottle of orange
juice.

Randy meanders sadly around the boxed up room. He notices
the photo of Donna and Brian, picks it up. Donna talks O.S.

A few seconds later Donna comes back down the stairs.

                       RANDY
I just, I just don't know what to
do, Donna.

                       DONNA
      (pleads)
You need to get help.

                       RANDY
Thanks for hearing me out. Most
exes would have called the cops by
now.

Randy curiously eyes Donna. She has guilty written all over.

The front door flies open. Clay enters. Randy's eyes shift
back and forth.

                       CLAY
Randy, can you come with me, old
buddy?

Randy looks at Donna in disbelief.

36.

                       DONNA
I'm sorry! I didn't know what to
do! He's just taking you to get
help.

                       RANDY
Like hell he is.

Clay approaches. Randy bolts to the back door. Clay gives
chase and tackles him from behind.

                       RANDY
No!

Clay slaps the cuffs on him.

INT. PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL BEDROOM - NIGHT

Light blue paint, tinted windows, a depressingly small
shower.

Randy sits on the bed in his plain psychiatric bedroom,
dressed in a blue gown, with the fuzzy green hospital socks.
His face is granite.

A KNOCK AT THE DOOR

Dr. Roberts comes in and plops down next to Randy.

                       DR. ROBERTS
I came to check on you.

                       RANDY
Thanks.

                       DR. ROBERTS
Why did I get a phone call at
nine-thirty at night saying you're
at Glen View?

                       RANDY
I needed a vacation and Disneyland
was just out of my price range.

                       DR. ROBERTS
You came to the wrong place for a
vacation.

Emotion floods Randy like a wave.

                       RANDY
I don't even know how to begin--

37.

                       DR. ROBERTS
Start with why you were at your
wife's house.

                       RANDY
      (babbles)
There was a plane crash--it
happened right in front of me. I
knew it was going to happen...

                       DR. ROBERTS
You saw the crash? You knew it was
going to happen?

                       RANDY
I don't know what to say.

                       DR. ROBERTS
I'm here to help.

Randy relaxes and shrugs his shoulders.

                       RANDY
Ok, why not? I'm not going to be
here tomorrow anyway.

                       DR. ROBERTS
What's that supposed to mean?

                       RANDY
It means that I am going to fall
asleep here, tonight and when I
wake up it'll be yesterday and
I'll be back at my house.

                       DR. ROBERTS
I'm not following.

                       RANDY
I died three days ago. Actually, I
died three days from now when I
wrecked my truck.

                       DR. ROBERTS
So you died in a car crash and
then woke up on your Serta?

                       RANDY
Can I ask you a question?

                       DR. ROBERTS
Sure.

38.

                       RANDY
What if my life really is going
backwards? What if this is really
happening?

                       DR. ROBERTS
Randy, I, I can't validate these
delusions.

The DOOR BLASTS OPEN. Two FBI AGENTS enter.

                       AGENT ONE
Randy Jenkins?

                       RANDY
Yeah?

                       DR. ROBERTS
      (sternly)
You can't be in here.

The Agents swiftly grab Randy and cuff him.

                       AGENT ONE
You're coming with us.

                       DR. ROBERTS
What the hell's going on?

                       AGENT TWO
We need to speak to Mr. Jenkins.

                       RANDY
I tried to warn you! I tried to
tell you it would happen!

Randy, accepting his fate, places his hands behind his back.
The agents cuff him. Dr. Roberts stares dumbfounded.

INT. SCHOOL HALLWAY - DAY

FLASHBACK

Randy(Teen) and Brian stroll through a wave of students.

                       DR. ROBERTS (V.O.)
Seems like things were pretty
complicated.

                       RANDY (V.O.)
Yeah things got that way really
quickly.

39.

                       BRIAN
She spent the whole night puking
in her room.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
Where your parents pissed?

                       BRIAN
Livid.

They spot Justin and Clay at the other end of the hallway.
Justin has a fresh shiner on his left eye.

Donna nervously approaches Justin and Clay. Her and Justin
briefly argue. He brushes her off. Donna bolts away crying.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
Looks like that's over.

                       BRIAN
It's for the best.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
Yeah, I guess.

                       BRIAN
Hey, would you mind talking to her
-- make sure she's okay?

                       RANDY (TEEN)
Me?

                       BRIAN
Would you? She's kinda pissed at
me right now.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
Yeah, sure, I guess. No problem.

Brian slaps Randy on the shoulder.

                       BRIAN
Thanks, buddy.

                                         END FLASHBACK

INT. RANDY'S TRAILER BEDROOM - MORNING

Randy opens his eyes. He sits up and scans around.

40.

INT. PUBLIC LIBRARY - DAY

LIBRARIAN, 30's, thin with glasses, sorts papers at the
front desk. Randy approaches.

                       LIBRARIAN
Help you find something?

                       RANDY
As a matter of fact.

INT. PUBLIC LIBRARY - LATER

Randy lumbers to the table and drops two dozen calenders.
Each have a different year printed on them.

                       RANDY
So what do I have to look forward
to.

-- The 2009 calendar opens. He goes to October 13th and
writes "Mom died".

-- A calendar marked 2005 opens. March 16th he writes "Henry
b-day".

-- A calendar marked 2010, December 25th he writes "I get
arrested".

--A calendar marked 1997. May 13th he writes "Brian
disappears".

--A calendar marked 2013, February 13th he writes "I get out
of prison.

Randy puts the pen down, his jaw drops.

                       RANDY
Oh, fuck.

INT. DR. ROBERTS OFFICE - DAY

Dr. Roberts sits at her desk, Randy on the couch across from
her.

                       DR. ROBERTS
What's on your mind?

41.

                       RANDY
Until yesterday, I don't think I
appreciated how hard your job
really is.

                       DR. ROBERTS
What happened yesterday?

                       RANDY
That's the thing. Yesterday, I
couldn't wait to tell you what it
was. Now, I don't think it even
matters.

                       DR. ROBERTS
It always matters.

                       RANDY
It's been a weird past few days,
I'll say that.

                       DR. ROBERTS
That's why I'm here.

                       RANDY
Let's say a meteor's going to hit
Iowa tomorrow, and you realize
you've done all these things you
want to fix and you only have one
day. Does it even matter if the
world's going to end anyway? It's
all going to be undone and no one
will remember.

                       DR. ROBERTS
Sounds to me like you're grappling
with the relationship between
meaning and mortality.

                       RANDY
I hate when you talk in gibberish.
Maybe you can't help me after all.

Randy gets up and stomps to the door.

                       DR. ROBERTS
If you take the meteor out of the
example, what's the difference?

Randy puzzles over the question.

42.

INT. RANDY'S BEDROOM - DAY

Randy approaches his shelves of baseball memorabilia. He
takes the scuffed up autographed ball off the shelf and
examines it.

EXT. CLAY AND DONNA'S HOUSE - EVENING

Randy's truck speeds to a stop. He gets out and hurries to
the front door, every bit an unstable man.

He KNOCKS

A beat. The door opens, revealing Donna, whose expression is
a fine line between confused and angry.

                       DONNA
Randy, what the heck are you doing
here?

                       RANDY
Came to see Henry.

A shadow appears behind Donna, moves closer. Clay appears.

                       CLAY
      (to Donna)
Everything alright?

Donna treads carefully with her reaction.

                       RANDY
It's fine--we're having a
conversation?

                       CLAY
You should've called.

                       RANDY
Please, I'm not here to get into
it with you. I just want to see
Henry.

Donna and Clay glance at each other, surprised.

INT. HENRY'S BEDROOM - MOMENTS LATER

The room is clean and organized. Henry plays a VIDEO GAME. A
KNOCK AT THE DOOR. Randy enters.

43.

                       RANDY
Hey, buddy.

Henry stares straight ahead. Randy sits next to him.

                       RANDY
      (cont'd)
So, what are you playing?

                       HENRY
Mario Party.

                       RANDY
What's a Mario Party?

                       HENRY
Just a video game.

Randy reaches in his pocket and pulls out a faded white
baseball, the same one Keith gave him.

                       RANDY
I brought a present.

Henry eyes the faded ball.

                       HENRY
      (disappointed)
A used baseball?

                       RANDY
      (proud)
Not just any baseball, my dad gave
it to me. Ken Griffey Jr.
autographed.

                       HENRY
Who's that?

                       RANDY
      (hurt)
What?

                       HENRY
I'm not really into baseball.

                       RANDY
You're kidding? Well, what are you
into these days?

44.

INT. JUSTIN'S LIVING ROOM - NIGHT

Justin, the black eye now gone, sits on his ripped-up couch,
nurses a can of piss-water beer. Randy sits across from him.

                       JUSTIN
Chess?

                       RANDY
He's on the school team and
everything. He quit baseball a
year ago and I didn't even know.

                       JUSTIN
Might as well put a tutu on him.

                       RANDY
It's like he's a completely
different person. I don't even
know him.

                       JUSTIN
Speaking of which, I'm in a bit of
a jam and need to ask you for a
solid. My pop's sick, cancer. I'm
having a bit of a hard time.

                       RANDY
I'll get you a five-thousand
dollar check tomorrow.

                       JUSTIN
You have no idea how much this
means to me!

Justin stands and wraps his arms around Randy.

                       RANDY
Anything for friends, right?

Randy gets up and mopes down the hall.

INT. JUSTIN'S BATHROOM

Randy tilts his head, closes his eyes and relieves himself.
FLUSH. He stares at himself in the mirror.

ANGRY VOICES O.S.

Randy peeks out the bathroom door. TWO THUGS corner a
nervous Justin against the wall.

45.

Randy looks around frantically. Notices a baseball bat
leaning against the wall.

INT. JUSTIN'S LIVING ROOM - MOMENTS LATER

Thug One holds Justin's arms as Thug Two SLAMS his fist into
Justin's face.

                       THUG TWO
You need to make five G's? Whore
yourself to a hundred women for a
fifty a pop, what do we care how
you do it?

                       JUSTIN
Please, don't -- I'll have the
money tomorrow.

Thug Two SOCKS him in the gut. Justin keels over.

                       THUG TWO
You think I like doing this? I'm
missing my daughter's dance
recital.

A BASEBALL BAT SLAMS into Thug Two's face. Knocks him out.
Randy leaps out from the hall.

Thug One lets go of Justin, goes for his gun. Randy and
Justin leap and tag team him. They deliver a beat-down.

                       RANDY
      (voice cracks)
And you two better not come back
-- he'll have the money when he
gets it!

Justin does not stop, repeatedly KICKS the two near
unconscious men.

                       RANDY
Let's go!

                       JUSTIN
These fuckers think they can just
come in MY HOUSE and do this to
me!

Justin grabs the gun, points it at Thug One. Cocks the
hammer back. Randy grabs it away.

46.

                       RANDY
Enough!

Justin delivers one last kick.

INT. RANDY'S TRUCK - NIGHT

Randy drives. Justin rides shotgun.

                       RANDY
So that's you needed the money
for?

                       JUSTIN
      (defensive)
Look, you said you didn't want
anything to do with my business
anymore, so I thought I'd give you
an alibi, okay? Sorry for trying
to do you a favor.

Randy stews.

                       JUSTIN
What do you want me to say?

Randy pulls the truck to the side of the road.

                       RANDY
Something's wrong with my back
right tire, can you take a look?

Justin looks at him, quizzically.

                       JUSTIN
I didn't hear anything.

                       RANDY
Just look.

Justin scoffs and exits the truck. Randy watches in the rear
view as Justin makes his way to the back tires. He slams the
truck into gear and rips away.

Justin is left in a cloud of dust.

                       RANDY
      (shouts)
Lying sack of shit!

47.

INT. LIBRARY - DAY

FLASHBACK

Rows of wooden bookshelves. Only a handful of students and a
librarian.

                       DR. ROBERTS (V.O.)
Sounds like you had a thing for
Donna well before you started
dating. Did Brian know?

                       RANDY (V.O.)
No, he had no idea.

Randy (Teen) enters. His eyes search as he makes his way
down the isles, towards the back.

He stops.

Donna sits at a table, head buried in her hands, crying.
Randy approaches. Donna peeks up.

                       DONNA (TEEN)
Please, Randy, not now.

Randy sits next to her.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
Just wanted to make sure you're
alright.

                       DONNA (TEEN)
You can tell Brian I am.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
You're smart, beautiful...You can
do so much better.

                       DONNA (TEEN)
No, I'm not.

Randy leans close, rubs her shoulder. She looks up. He leans
in and passionately kisses her.

SEVERAL FEET AWAY

Brian, unseen behind a book case, stares in anger. He
marches away.

                       RANDY (V.O.)
The next day Brian was gone.

48.

                                         END FLASHBACK

INT. RANDY'S TRAILER BEDROOM - MORNING

Randy's eyes open. He pops out of bed.

INT. RANDY'S TRUCK - MORNING

Randy has an eager look; clean shaved and dressed well. He
parks outside the house he shared with Donna.

EXT. RANDY AND DONNA'S STREET - MOMENTS LATER

Randy steps toward the house with a Power Rangers toy in
hand, hopeful. A cop car. Randy's heart sinks.

Randy ambles further down the sidewalk and gazes through the
living room window.

RANDY'S POV

Clay plays a game of chess with Henry on the living room
floor. Donna strums her sticker-covered guitar a few feet
away.

Randy can't take it. He shuffles back to his truck. He pulls
his phone out and dials.

                       RANDY
Justin, let's get fucked up
tonight.

Randy gets in the truck, starts it and pulls away.

INT. RANDY'S TRUCK - NIGHT

Randy drives down a country road, Justin rides shotgun, both
drunk. MUSIC PLAYS SOFTLY.

                       JUSTIN
Hey Randy, give me a stogie.

                       RANDY
Yeah.

Randy reaches in his pocket, his cigarettes drop to the
floor. He ducks down to pick them up. The truck swerves. He
sits up, regains control and hands one to Justin.

49.

POLICE SIRENS BLARE. Randy eyes the rear view mirror. He is
being pulled over.

                       JUSTIN
Aww shit.

                       RANDY
Yeah, I know.

Randy pulls the truck to the side of the road. The Cruiser
stops behind him.

Clay steps out and walks to the truck.

Randy rolls the window down. Clay peers in. Randy's reaction
is tempered with hostility.

                       CLAY
      (flatly)
Evening gentlemen.

                       RANDY
What do you want?

                       CLAY
You were swerving back there.

                       JUSTIN
Clay, we really need to get going.

                       CLAY
      (to Randy)
It reeks of booze in here. You
know a D.U.I's a parole violation?

                       RANDY
Why don't you just arrest me then?
I bet that would make your day.

                       CLAY
What would really make my day is
if you visited Henry.

                       RANDY
That's it!

EXT. COUNTRY ROAD

Randy pops the door open and drunkenly stumbles out. He
falls to the ground.

                       CLAY
Randy, get back in your vehicle.
Don't make a fool of yourself.

                       RANDY
He doesn't need me when he has
Super Cop as a Dad, does he?

Randy lifts himself up.

                       CLAY
I should impound your truck.

                       RANDY
You wanna stop by my trailer and
help yourself to that too?

Justin glares grimly at Clay.

                       JUSTIN
Clay, let's not have a situation
here. Just let us go home. For old
time's sake?

Clay and Justin exchange a steely glare.

Randy SUCKER PUNCHES Clay. A knockout shot that drops him.
Randy kicks him twice in the stomach. Clay groans.

                       RANDY
Who's the fool now?

Randy stumbles in the truck and hits the gas.

                       RANDY
      (laughs)
We better get gone before he comes
after us.

                       JUSTIN
Don't worry, Clay wouldn't fuck
with me.

INT. TEEN RANDY'S BEDROOM - MORNING

FLASHBACK

Sunlight peeks through the blinds.

                       DR. ROBERTS (V.O.)
What happened to him, to Brian?

                       RANDY (V.O.)
I don't really know.

Randy (teen) lies face down in bed, a small pool of drool
underneath him.

DOORBELL RINGS REPEATEDLY

Randy's eyes pop open.

                       LUCY (O.S.)
Randy, can you get that?

He gets up and shuffles out the door.

LIVING ROOM

Randy opens the front door. Donna, a red teary mess, stands
there.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
What's wrong?

EXT. SUBURBAN STREET

Donna, arms crossed, and Randy hurry down the sidewalk.

52.

                       DONNA (TEEN)
It's been almost two days no. No
calls. Nothing. Something is
wrong.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
Shit. It'll be okay, we'll find
him, I promise.

                       RANDY (V.O.)
That's the first of many lies I
told Donna. We never saw Brian
again.

                       DR. ROBERTS (V.O.)
You can't blame yourself for that.

INT. JUSTIN'S LIVING ROOM - MORNING

Light emerges through the blinks of slowly opening eyes.

Randy pops up from the couch. Justin enters.

                       JUSTIN
All right, dead beat. Time for me
to kick your ass to the curb. I
gotta get ready for work.

Randy's confused eyes scan the room.

                       RANDY
Hey.

                       JUSTIN

INT. RANDY'S TRUCK - NIGHT

Randy, eyes bloodshot, droops his head. He cruises by a sign
that reads: "Welcome to Indiana".

53.

                       RANDY
You're not taking me back! You
hear me, God? I did my three
years! I'm not doing three more!

Sunlight peeks over the horizon. A slight smile from Randy.

EVERYTHING GOES BLACK

EXT. DONNA'S (TEEN) DRIVEWAY - DAY

FLASHBACK

                       DR. ROBERTS (V.O.)
So what where things like after,
you know...?

                       RANDY (V.O.)
Three months went by, all of Cedar
Falls had searched for Brian. It
was a year before his parents got
a death certificate, but we all
knew before then....

Randy (Teen) pulls his bike up to the car-less driveway and
sets it against the fence.

He goes around back and enters the house through the glass
sliding door.

INT. DONNA'S (TEEN)HOUSE

Randy heads up.

BRIAN'S ROOM

Donna, red faced and teary eyed, storms about, packing
Brian's things into boxes.

Randy enters, looks around in shock.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
What are you doing?

                       DONNA (TEEN)
I'm tired of walking by his room
everyday, everything neat and
tidy. It's like a shrine. He's not
coming back, they never do.

54.

Randy leans in for a hug.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
You don't know that.

Donna pulls away. She hands Randy the picture of him and
Brian together (the same one we saw in the trailer).

                       DONNA (TEEN)
This is all that's left of him.

Donna drops to her knees. Randy does the same, He lifts her
chin, their eyes meet. Randy leans in and kisses her.

                                         END FLASHBACK

INT. MOTEL ROOM - MORNING

Randy lies face down on the floor. A small pool of drool
underneath him. Empty bottles of booze and crumpled fast
food bags litter around him. The room reeks of cheap and
sleazy.

Randy opens his eyes. They dart back and forth. He slowly
lifts himself. Recognition sets in.

                       RANDY
      (whispers)
Oh, God.

Justin and MOTEL BRUNETTE, thin, late 20's, shuffle out of
the bathroom. They turn to Randy.

                       JUSTIN
Look who's up.

                       RANDY
Hey.

                       JUSTIN
I'm taking this pretty thing home.
You have fun last night?

Randy rubs his head and groggily looks around.

                       RANDY
Sure looks like I did.

                       JUSTIN
It's good having you back--it was
a long three years without you.

55.

Randy tries to hide the utter sadness behind his smile.

                       RANDY
Thanks.

                       JUSTIN
Hey, before I forget, I think I
can get you a job at the slaughter
house. I'll talk to Alberto.

                       RANDY
Can't wait.

Justin and Motel Brunette smile at Randy and walk out the
door. Randy's eyes droop. He paces over to the nightstand
and picks up a bottle.

                       RANDY
      (sorrowful)
I can't go back.

Randy drops down on the bed. He raises the bourbon and
knocks it back.

Randy, reclined in a filled bathtub; his face puffy and red,
eyes distant. Two empty bottles of sleeping pills next to
him. He grabs the bourbon and pounds it.

Randy's eyes flicker. His breathing labored. His eyes shut
and his head tilts to the side. The bottle slides from his
hand and drops to the floor.

His body slowly sinks into the bath.

INT. HOSPITAL BEDROOM - NIGHT

A CLOCK SLOWLY TICKS on the wall.

Randy lies in a hospital bed. He awakens, disoriented,
searches for familiarity.

He looks around the typically decorated hospital room. Two
doors and a window.

He lifts his hand; handcuffed to the bed. Randy turns and
sees a buzzer. He pushes it.

56.

A few seconds later, NURSE ONE enters, gives Randy a
pleasant smile.

                       NURSE ONE
Mr. Jenkins, you're awake.

Randy rubs his head. He looks sick to his stomach.

                       RANDY
What's going on? Why the jewelry?

                       NURSE ONE
Just a precaution for anyone on
suicide watch.

Randy gives a somber nod.

                       NURSE ONE
      (cont'd)
How you feeling?

                       RANDY
Sick to my stomach and my skin's
crawling. Just a usual Friday
night, really.

                       NURSE ONE
Sorry, we had to pump your
stomach. You'll feel like that for
a little while.

                       RANDY
How, how did I end up here?

                       NURSE ONE
A maid at the Motel you were
staying called 911.

The door opens. NURSE TWO enters.

                       NURSE TWO
Mr. Jenkins, you have a visitor.

Clay eases in, wearing his police uniform. Randy gives him a
contemptuous look.

                       NURSE ONE
I'll leave you two.

Nurse One and Nurse Two exit the room. Clay scratches his
head and squints uncomfortably at the ground.

57.

                       CLAY
Jeez, Randy, you look like shit.

                       RANDY
If you're here to piss on my
grave, you're a little early. Or a
bit late, I'm not really sure
which.

Randy bites his lip and turns away, disgusted. Clay sits.

                       CLAY
      (joking)
The Life Insurance plan Donna took
out on you doesn't cover this sort
of thing.

                       RANDY
Does it cover me getting stabbed
in the back?

                       CLAY
You hate me for marrying Donna. I
love her, I love Henry. I'm not
gonna apologize for that.

                       RANDY
Don't hold your breath waiting for
a thank you.

                       CLAY
Your first night out of prison, I
can only imagine how overwhelming
that must be.

                       RANDY
So's your first night before going
in.

                       CLAY
You need to learn to forgive
yourself--you're not a bad person.

                       RANDY
What makes you the expert?

                       CLAY
The guilt eating away at you, the
hopelessness. We all make
mistakes.

                       RANDY
Except you, right?

58.

Clay has a distant expression.

                       CLAY
Trust me, I have.

Clay reaches in his pocket and pulls out a pamphlet. He
hands it to Randy.

                       RANDY
What's this?

Randy stares at Clay blankly, a meeting list for Narcotics
Anonymous.

                       CLAY
They can help you get your life
back together. They helped me.

Clay stands up and walks towards the door.

                       CLAY
It's never too late to realize
what's important in your life.

Clay exits, leaves Randy alone with only his thoughts.

EXT. BASEBALL FIELD - EVENING

FLASHBACK

Randy (Teen), alone, bat in hand, a cluster of baseballs on
the ground next to him, tosses one in the air and CRACKS it
deep in the outfield.

Several balls litter the outfield.

                       DR. ROBERTS (V.O.)
Losing your father and best friend
within a year of each other.

                       RANDY (V.O.)
I started dating Donna, so I had
that. Life goes on and so did I.
You make new friends.

DUGOUT - LATER

Randy packs his baseball gear into a duffel bag.

Justin approaches.

59.

                       JUSTIN (TEEN)
You're really dedicated.

Randy turns, nervously eyes Justin.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
Hey.

                       JUSTIN (TEEN)
Relax, I don't care you're dating
Donna.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
You still go to school here?

                       JUSTIN (TEEN)
Nah, I dropped out, wasn't for me.
Sorry about Brian, I know he was
your bestie and all.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
Yeah, thanks.

Justin pulls out a joint and lights it, smirks at Randy.

                       JUSTIN (TEEN)
Wanna hit?

                       RANDY (TEEN)
I enjoy not being grounded.

                       JUSTIN (TEEN)
Never smoked before, have you?

                       RANDY (TEEN)
That obvious?

Justin extends the joint.

                       JUSTIN (TEEN)
Takes all the stress away.

Randy, unsure, takes the joint. Gazes over it a few moments.
Takes a long drag, coughs sharply.

                       JUSTIN (TEEN)
Oh shit, toss it!

Randy tosses the joint off to the side and turns.

OFFICER GARCIA, 30's, brown uniform on, pulls his squad car
into the lot a few feet away. Rolls his window down.

60.

                       OFFICER GARCIA
Cooper, what are you doing here?

                       JUSTIN (TEEN)
Hanging out with a friend.

Officer Garcia motions to them.

                       OFFICER GARCIA
Hand it over.

                       JUSTIN (TEEN)
Hand what over?

                       OFFICER GARCIA
I can smell the pot from here. If
you make me get out of this car to
get it, I'm gonna bust your asses.

Randy reluctantly picks up the joint and shuffles to the
car. Officer Garcia crushes the joint and tosses it.

                       OFFICER GARCIA
Have a good evening boys.

The squad car pulls off.

INT. PRISON CELL - DAY

A NIGHTSTICK CLANGS against the bars. GUARD strolls by.

Randy lies on his dirty, matted prison bed, wears his orange
jumpsuit.

                       GUARD
Morning wake up call--five minutes
ladies.

Randy opens his eyes, blinks sourly at his surroundings. His
cell mate, JAMAAL, thin and wiry, sits up in bed, looks at
him with a melancholy smile.

                       JAMAAL
Congrats man.

61.

A GUTTURAL MOAN erupts from the depths of Randy.

                       JAMAAL
      (cont'd)
What's wrong with you, man?

Randy curls in the fetal position and WEEPS.

                       JAMAAL
      (cont'd)
I aint never seen anyone sad as
you on their last day.

INT. PRISON LUNCH ROOM - DAY

Randy eats, keeps to himself. He stares down, defeated.
Hardened criminals fill the seats.

A FIGHT BREAKS OUT between two inmates; the entire room is
in an uproar.

Randy casually turns to look, then goes back to eating his
food, disinterested.

EXT. PRISON YARD - DAY

Randy shuffles through the prison yard by himself. He
appears in deep thought. Inmates play basketball and hang
out in large groups.

INT. PRISON CELL - NIGHT

Randy lies in bed, reads in the dimly lit cell. His eyes

So, how did you get from there to

Justin and Randy each lean down, rail a line of cocaine.

                       RANDY (V.O.)
Justin and I became best
friends...

--INT. CHURCH - DAY

Donna, decked out in her wedding dress, approaches Randy at
the alter.

                       RANDY (V.O.)
We got married...

--EXT. BASEBALL FIELD - DAY

Packed stands. The middle of a game.

Randy smashes a ball deep down left field.

                       RANDY (V.O.)
My baseball career took off.

--EXT. HOSPITAL ROOM

Donna cradles Baby Henry. Randy looks on adoringly.

                       RANDY (V.O.)
Henry was born...

--EXT. CEMETERY - DAY

Randy stands over a gravestone that reads "Lucy Jenkins"

                       RANDY (V.O.)
Mom died of lung cancer, all the
smoking she did...

EXT. BASEBALL FIELD - DAY

Randy lies on the field, face contorted in pain, holds his
shoulder. Teammates rush toward him.

                       RANDY (V.O.)
Then my injury hit...

--INT. RANDY AND DONNA'S LIVING ROOM - DAY

Randy, arm in a sling, opens a electric bill with a past due
notice.

63.

                       RANDY (V.O.)
I had just finished my rookie
contract and didn't have any money
coming in...

--INT. JUSTIN'S CAMERO - DAY

Justin, in the driver's seat, hands Randy a brick of
cocaine.

                       RANDY (V.O.)
Then I got into dealing...

--INT. RANDY AND DONNA'S LIVING ROOM - DAY

Randy goes to the front door, opens it. Police come in and
handcuff Randy in front of Donna and Henry.

                       RANDY (V.O.)
It really didn't take me long to
get busted.

                       DR. ROBERTS (V.O.)
And now you're here.

                                         END
MONTAGE-FLASHBACK

INT. PRISON INTERVIEW ROOM - DAY

We are back in Dr. Roberts' office. Back to the first scene.

                       RANDY
Now I'm here.
(smiles)
Again.

Randy leans back and takes a deep breath.

                       DR. ROBERTS
That's the wildest story I've ever
heard. I'm not even sure where to
begin with advice.

                       RANDY
I know, we've had this
conversation before, remember?

                       DR. ROBERTS
So, this will be the last time we
speak?

64.

                       RANDY
Do you believe in fate?

                       DR. ROBERTS
I believe fate is a word that
people use to justify not taking
control of their lives.

Randy nods and looks down.

                       RANDY
Maybe you're right.

                       DR. ROBERTS
What about you--what do you
believe?

                       RANDY
For as long as I could remember, I
believed everything that was meant
to happen eventually does.

                       DR. ROBERTS
Is that what you still believe?

                       RANDY
After Brian disappeared I had a
dream I was standing in a long
tunnel. It was dark and wide and
went forever. When I got to the
end I was on a road and there was
an immediate fork. I couldn't
decide what to do.

                       DR. ROBERTS
Maybe the road was just a fork in
a bigger road you had already
ended up on.

                       RANDY
Maybe it was.

                       DR. ROBERTS
How does that make you feel?

                       RANDY
Helpless, like I have no control.

                       DR. ROBERTS
What if the tunnel was going in
the opposite direction?

65.

                       RANDY
What do you mean?

                       DR. ROBERTS
What if the tunnel was going
inward? What if the tunnel is
inside you?

INT. PRISON CELL - DAY

Randy lies in bed, head buried in a book.

A Guard approaches.

                       GUARD
Jenkins, visitor in nine.

Randy looks up, expecting.

INT. VISITOR'S BOOTH - MOMENTS LATER

A glass wall separates prisoners from visitors.

Donna, nervous and uncomfortable, sits on her side.

Randy enters, walks up and takes a seat on his side. They
each pick up the standard issued prison phone next to them.

                       DONNA
How're you holding up?

                       RANDY
Not bad, I'm learning how to
juggle.

                       DONNA
I'm glad to hear you're putting
your time to good use.

                       RANDY
Yeah, I figure I can work kids
birthday parties when I get out.

A beat.

                       DONNA
Randy, I--

Randy closes his eyes and rubs his temples.

66.

                       RANDY
--Wait, don't tell me, I've been
taking psychic lesson. You're here
to tell me you're marrying Clay.

                       DONNA
      (shocked)
Who told you--?

                       RANDY
--And in a couple years Clay will
get a new job in Georgia and you
and Henry will leave never to see
me again.

                       DONNA
How can you be so selfish?

                       RANDY
What?

                       DONNA
      (angrier)
You brought bricks of cocaine in
the house! I found your stash in
the chest in the closet! What if
Henry had found it? Clay asked me
to marry him and I said yes. It's
what's best for Henry, for me. I
thought you deserved to hear it
from me.

Donna hangs up the phone. One last regretful glance at Randy
and she shuffles out the door.

                       RANDY
You're right.

INT. PRISON CELL - DAY

The Guard strolls by, CLANGS HIS NIGHTSTICK against the cell
bars.

Randy lies in bed asleep.

                       GUARD
Time to wake up, ladies.

Randy opens his eyes and groggily looks up. Jamaal stares at
him.

67.

                       JAMAAL
I remember my first night--longest
of my life.

                       RANDY
I know the feeling.

                       JAMAAL
How'd you sleep?

                       RANDY
      (smiles)
Never better.

                       JAMAAL
Man, why do they always stick me
with the weirdos?

INT. COURTROOM - DAY

The pews are packed, silent, all eyes forward.

A JUDGE looks over papers. Randy, suit and tie, is the only
one standing. His ATTORNEY sits next to him.

                       JUDGE
Mr. Jenkins, you are charged with
one count of felony narcotic
possession, one count of resisting
arrest, one count of reckless
operation of a motor vehicle. How
do you plead?

                       RANDY
I'm guilty. Guilty of it all.

Attorney stands and gestures to Randy in shock.

                       ATTORNEY
What the hell's wrong with you --
this isn't what we talked about?

INT. JAIL COMMONS - DAY

Prisoners meander about.

Randy, in black and whites, on a bench, watches television.

ON TELEVISION

Jennifer Anderson sits at her news desk.

68.

                       JENNIFER ANDERSON (V.O.)
Local Baseball star Randy Jenkins
was arrested yesterday on several
charges after a high speed chase
with police...

Randy's mug shot appears.

He stares at the terrible picture of himself, soaks in who
he used to be.

INT. RANDY AND DONNA'S BEDROOM - MORNING

Blackness

ALARM BEEPS LOUDLY

Light emerges through the blinks of slowly opening eyes.

His eyes flutter open. Finally home. Pictures of a happy
family intermixed with smart color coordinated furniture.

Randy slides his hand onto the other half of the bed, feels
the residual warmth. A nervous smile.

                       RANDY
      (whispers)
This is really happening?

Randy ambles to the door, shivering.

HALLWAY

                       DONNA (O.S.)
You got your baseball gear all
packed?

                       HENRY (O.S.)
Yes, Mom.

                       DONNA (O.S.)
I'll be there at four-thirty to
pick you up.

                       HENRY (O.S.)
Is Dad gonna come?

                       DONNA (O.S.)
He's too busy.

Randy stands at the top of the stairs. Donna and Henry's
voices echo up. He quietly laughs and cries all at once.

69.

INT. RANDY AND DONNA'S KITCHEN - MOMENTS LATER

A bright Christmas tree illuminates the living room.

Randy takes deep breaths, shakes as he paces down the
stairs. Donna and Henry casually go about their morning.

He stops in his tracks. Donna glances at him, disinterested,
then goes back to what she was doing. Randy rushes up to
Henry.

                       RANDY
      (voice breaks)
Henry, buddy! Good morning!

Randy lifts Henry out of his chair and gives him a
magnanimous hug.

                       HENRY
Mom said I could borrow one of
your old mitts for baseball
practice?

                       RANDY
Yeah, it should be somewhere in
the upstairs closet.

Henry stands and tromps up the stairs.

Randy approaches Donna and tries to give her a hug, but her
arms cross as she turns away.

                       RANDY
Donna, I--

Randy forcefully grabs her. She nervously eyes him. Randy
suddenly breaks down, WEEPS in her arms.

                       RANDY
I missed you so much.

Donna's anger suddenly melts. She pats him on the back,
totally bewildered.

                       DONNA
Are you feeling okay?

Randy's eyebrows rise.

                       RANDY
Oh, god!

Randy bolts upstairs leaving a perplexed Donna behind.

70.

INT. RANDY'S WALKIN-CLOSET - DAY

Henry sifts through shoe-boxes, hampers, and shelves. He
digs down to the bottom layer of junk, a large wooden trunk.
Randy bolts in.

                       RANDY
Hold your horses, buddy.

                       HENRY
I can't find it.

                       RANDY
Your mom wants you to finish your
breakfast before it gets cold.
Scoot your butt.

                       HENRY
The mitt--

                       RANDY
--I'll bring it down.

Henry exits the closet and hurries down the stairs. Randy
nervously pops open the trunk and digs to the bottom. He
pulls a plastic wrapped brick of cocaine.

He nervously eyes the object in his hand.

INT. CHURCH BASEMENT - DAY

A dozen half broken people sit in a circle of uncomfortable
chairs chit-chatting over cheap coffee and stale cookies.
Clay is in the thick of it.

The door opens and Randy enters. His arms quickly cross and
his eyes dart around.

Clay breaks from the fray and approaches.

                       CLAY
Randy, really glad to see you
here.

Clay reaches out and shakes Randy's hand.

                       RANDY
Hey, Clay.

                       CLAY
You look rough.

71.

                       RANDY
      (laughs)
You're not exactly model material
yourself.

                       CLAY
So, how's the family?

Randy looks at Clay cross-eyed.

INT. CHURCH BASEMENT - LATER

The middle of a Narcotics Anonymous meeting. Randy sits in
the circle with everyone else.

                       CLAY
Step nine, making amends. Except
when it would hurt the person even
more. One day I think I should,
the next I think I'm crazy. Am I
just trying to clear my own
conscience at the other person's
expense?

Randy stares down. Clay's words have an impact on him.

                       CLAY
      (cont'd)
You know, making amends is about
more than an apology. Sometimes
the people you hurt the most are
no longer around. But we still
are. Honor those people by not
making those same mistakes.

MONTAGE

INT. CHURCH BASEMENT - DAY

Randy goes to the meetings daily, looking more and more
comfortable.

                                         END MONTAGE

INT. CHURCH BASEMENT - DAY

Randy, arm in a sling, sits in the circle of chairs, all
eyes on him.

72.

                       RANDY
I started stealing my mom's smokes
when I was thirteen, drinking at
parties a year later. I have
friends who could get whatever
else you wanted. I was a selfish,
cocky, big-shot ball player, got
scouted right out of high school.
Then my mom died and I tore my
rotator cuff. Everything spiraled
so quickly.
(sighs)
I don't want to spiral anymore. I
may not be able to control my
past, but I refuse to let my past
control my present.

EXT. RANDY AND DONNA'S DRIVEWAY - DAY

Randy, stands on his steps, stares with frustration at
Justin's Camero, parked at the curb. Justin beckons him
over. Randy sighs.

INT. JUSTIN'S CAR

Randy heaves in and closes the door. Justin produces a brick
of coke, plops it onto Randy's lap.

                       JUSTIN
Merry Christmas -- one kilo, as
ordered.

Randy grimaces. He picks the brick up and holds it like a
baby with a dirty diaper.

                       JUSTIN
Don't puss out on me, I had to
jump hoops to get it.

                       RANDY
You need to take it back, I
changed my mind.

                       JUSTIN
You're the one with the busted arm
sinking in a mortgage -- I thought
you wanted this?

                       RANDY
You're right.

73.

Randy grabs the kilo and flashes a flat smile. Justin starts
the car.

                       JUSTIN
I gotta bounce.

Randy exits the car. Justin drives off.

Randy meanders to the storm drain on the curb and chucks the
kilo down it. A satisfied smile.

INT. HOSPITAL ROOM - MORNING

BLACKNESS

BEEP...BEEP...BEEP...

Light emerges through the blinks of slowly opening eyes.

Randy sits up in bed, wrenches at the pain in his shoulder.

DR. HARTLEY, (50's), distinguished, perfectly pressed
outfit, closes a chart and looks at Randy.

                       DR. HARTLEY
Try not to move it for a while.

                       RANDY
Uh, it's more painful than I
remember.

                       DR. HARTLEY
Whenever you're feeling up to it,
we should start talking about ways
we can approach the affects this
injury is going to affect your
life.

                       RANDY
I don't need to hear you tell me
I'll never play ball again.

                       DR. HARTLEY
I'm so sorry.

                       RANDY
      (smiles)
I will play again.

74.

INT. TOY STORE - DAY

Randy, arm in a sling, stands at the checkout.

FRIENDLY CASHIER hands him a large bag.

                       FRIENDLY CASHIER
I think he'll really like this.

                       RANDY
I do too.

INT. HENRY'S BEDROOM - DAY

Henry lies in bed, book in hand.

A KNOCK

The door opens. Randy enters, bag in hand.

                       HENRY
What's that?

INT. HENRY'S BEDROOM - LATER

Randy and Henry sit on opposite sides of a chess set. Henry
is kicking Randy's butt.

                       RANDY
You're really good with your

Looks like a horse to me.

Randy moves a piece. Henry quickly counters.

An OPPOSING PLAYER, at bat, SLAMS the ball deep.

                       RANDY
This is really gonna hurt.

                       DONNA

JAMIE JENKINS, (20's), the sweet disposition of her
childhood still remains, approaches.

                       RANDY
Hey, Jamie.

Jamie pulls out a pack of cigarettes.

                       RANDY
We'll be there in a minute.

Donna and Henry shuffle inside. Jamie extends a smoke to
Randy.

                       RANDY
Actually, I quit.

                       JAMIE

                       RANDY
How's Chicago?

                       JAMIE
It's cold. I just, I just feel bad
I wasn't able to make it up here
to see her for the holidays. I've
been so busy.

                       RANDY
There's no way you could have

INT. RANDY AND DONNA'S BEDROOM - MORNING

ALARM GOES OFF.

Randy opens his eyes, lying next to Donna. He pops out of
bed and goes straight to the closet with urgency. He pulls
clothes out and quickly gets dressed.

Donna pops her head up and looks at him curiously.

                       DONNA
Where's the fire? Your friends are
coming over to watch the game.

                       RANDY
I'm just going to visit my Mom.

                       DONNA
      (confused)
Wait, I thought I heard you say
that you're going to visit your
Mom?

Randy grabs his jacket and runs out of the bedroom. Donna is
left dumbfounded.

INT. RANDY'S TRUCK - DAY

A cold winter day. Tiny snowflakes trickle down. Randy pulls
up to Lucy's house. Modest, painted with gray and white
trim.

He stares at it in silence.

                       RANDY
Well Toto, we're not in Kansas
anymore.

EXT. LUCY'S DRIVEWAY - DAY

Randy reaches the front door. He rings the bell. He shuffles
and shakes. Looks absolutely sick to his stomach.

A long beat.

The door opens. Lucy, feeble and pathetic, stands before
him. His breath can't leave him quick enough.

                       LUCY
Randy, what are you doing here?

                       RANDY
      (stutters)
I uh, uh, I was just in the
neighborhood and thought I'd drop
by and visit my favorite mom.

                       LUCY
      (smiles)
Bullshit.

Randy gives Lucy a big hug, squeezes tight. She COUGHS
weakly.

                       LUCY
Well, get out of the cold. Don't
mind the mess, I haven't gotten to
cleaning yet.

INT. LUCY'S LIVING ROOM - CONTINUOUS

Lucy leads Randy into the mess of the house. Two oxygen
tanks rest off in a corner. They pass the kitchen table. A
hospital bill catches Randy's eye.

A large antique grandfather clock TICKS AWAY.

Lucy and Randy sit. Lucy sparks a cigarette. She offers one
to Randy.

                       RANDY
No thanks, Mom. I quit.

                       LUCY
The hell you say?

                       RANDY
It's true.

80.

                       LUCY
Good for you. These things are the
devil.

                       RANDY
I was thinking of bringing Henry
by tomorrow. He really wants to
come.

                       LUCY
Ha! You've never been a very good
liar. Why the sudden interest in
little old me?

Randy's face reveals the losing battle with his emotions.

                       RANDY
I've been worried.

                       LUCY
That's sweet, but there's no need.

Randy gets up and gives Lucy a hug. She COUGHS
uncontrollably.

                       RANDY
You alright?

                       LUCY
Just a dash under the weather. My
medication is really taking it out
of me.

                       RANDY
Is there anything I can get you?

Lucy continues COUGHING.

                       LUCY
Orange juice.

                       RANDY
Absolutely.

Randy gets up and walks to the fridge. He grabs the orange
juice and pours a glass. He brings it back.

                       LUCY
Thanks.

                       RANDY
Is there anything else you need?
Anything at all?

81.

Lucy drinks her orange juice. She COUGHS VIOLENTLY. Randy
looks desperately, wants to help, but knows he can't.

                       LUCY
No. I'm really glad you came over
-- I've been wanting to spend some
time with you.

                       RANDY
I should have done it a lot
sooner. I'll do it a lot more.

                       LUCY
Something's been weighing on my
mind--

                       RANDY
--Mom, you don't need to.

                       LUCY
I'm sorry I wasn't there for you
like I should have been after dad
you know...

                       RANDY
We all have regrets, I know how
tough it was for you.

Lucy stumbles, drops to the floor COUGHING. Randy quickly
rushes to her side and lifts her.

                       LUCY
I think I should be heading to
bed. That'll make me feel better.

                       RANDY
Let me help.

Randy helps Lucy stand. He braces her as they walk down the
hall.

INT. LUCY'S BEDROOM - DAY

Randy sits on a chair overlooking Lucy in bed, asleep. Her
breaths are weak and measured.

Her eyes open wide. She struggles to breath. Randy grabs her
hand and squeezes tight. The life drains from her body.

                       RANDY
Love ya, Mom. I'll be back
tomorrow.

INT. RANDY'S TRUCK - DAY

Randy drives, Henry holds flowers in his lap.

                       HENRY
Why are we bringing Grandma
flowers?

                       RANDY
Because she's not feeling well and
this will make her feel better.

                       HENRY
What's wrong with her?

                       RANDY
Nothing.

                       HENRY
      (confused)
I thought you said she wasn't
feeling well?

                       RANDY
She's just a little under the
weather, that's all.

                       HENRY
Oh.

EXT. LUCY'S DRIVEWAY - CONTINUOUS

Randy and Henry get out of the truck and head to the front
door. Randy rings the doorbell. A few seconds later Lucy
answers. She looks as bad as she did before.

83.

                       LUCY
Randy, Henry, what are you doing
here?

                       RANDY
Surprise, Mom!

                       LUCY
      (looks at Henry)
Who are the flowers for?

Henry hands Lucy the flowers. A large, heartwarming smile.

INT. RANDY AND DONNA'S BEDROOM - MORNING

INT. RANDY AND DONNA'S LIVING ROOM - MOMENTS LATER

Randy stumbles down the stairs, still in his pajamas. He
stops dead in his tracks.

LIGHT CRIES

Randy continues to the bottom of the stairs. Donna sits at
the kitchen table, teary eyed, a NEWSPAPER gripped in her
hands.

She quickly puts the paper down and wipes her cheeks.

                       RANDY
What's wrong?

                       DONNA
Nothing.

Donna quickly stands. She throws the paper in the trash and
exits.

                       RANDY
Donna,--

Randy picks up the NEWSPAPER and examines the headline: "10
Year Anniversary of Missing Teen."

Underneath the headline are pictures of BRIAN RIVERS.

                       RANDY
Checkmate! I finally won one!

                       HENRY
This is our first game?

                       RANDY
Right, sorry.

                       HENRY
You're really good.

                       RANDY
I had a great teacher.

                       HENRY
I'll beat you one day.

Randy rubs Henry's head.

                       RANDY
Let's do something fun.

spread. She gives birth to Henry.

A DOCTOR, and two Nurses, NURSE THREE and NURSE FOUR help
deliver. Donna SCREAMS.

The evening sun shines through two large windows behind
them, revealing a beautiful collage of spring blue and

Randy cradles BABY HENRY affectionately in his arms. A
strange anguish fills him.

                       RANDY
I was just getting to know you,
Henry.

The door opens, Nurse Three, chart in hand, pops in.

                       NURSE THREE
Sorry poppa, visiting time's
over--baby needs to go to his
incubator.

                       RANDY
Please, can I hold him just a bit
longer?

                       NURSE THREE
I'm sorry, but--

                       RANDY
--Please! Just one more minute
alone.

                       NURSE THREE
Ok, I have a chart that will take
me a minute to drop off.

86.

Nurse Three exits the room. She meanders down the hallway
and drops off the chart, her back to the room..

Randy hurries out with Henry in his arms.

      (sobs)
I can't lose you again, baby.
Please don't go.

His voice wrenched with pain. He wipes tears from his cheek.

                       RANDY
      (cont'd)
I wont let you go--
(strokes Henry's cheek)
I promise Henry, I'll never let

The morning sun peeks over the horizon.

Randy and Henry are in the same spot we saw them, except
Randy is hunched a little lower, large bags under his
fluttering eyes. Henry is fast asleep.

Henry. His name's Henry.

Donna saunters to him and plants a kiss on his cheek. She
grabs her hand and rubs it over her belly.

                       DONNA
I can't wait to meet him.

A KNOCK AT THE DOOR. Randy opens his eyes and Lucy enters.
She looks younger, healthier, and more vibrant.

                       LUCY
Wake up Randy, you're gonna be
late.

Randy rubs his face and regards Lucy. He smiles.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
Morning, Mom.

                       LUCY
Hurry, your breakfast is getting
cold.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
      (innocently)
Must've forgot to set my alarm.

                       LUCY
I swear Randy, you're going to be
late for your own funeral.

Lucy leaves the room. Randy gets up and stretches. He moves
towards his window. He peers out at the rising morning sun.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
You shouldn't be doing that, it's
bad for you.

                       LUCY
You're not really one to talk.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
Why's that?

                       LUCY
Cause I know you've been stealing
my smokes.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
Actually, I quit.

Lucy gives Randy an incredulous look, takes a long drag.

                       LUCY

                       RANDY (TEEN)

      (to Clay)
You alright?

                       CLAY (TEEN)
Yeah, I'm fine. Just leave.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
I'll leave when you let go of his
neck.

Justin lets go of Clay and moves towards Randy.

                       JUSTIN (TEEN)
This doesn't concern you.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
I'm not leaving Clay alone with
you.

Justin stares Randy down. He pulls a pack of cigarettes out
and sparks one. He turns to Clay.

                       JUSTIN (TEEN)
      (cont'd)
Get the fuck outta here then, both
of you.

A cool, breezy evening; the ground covered with golden brown
leaves. Randy strolls down the street; his hands gripped to
his backpack straps.

Two neighborhood women speed-walk by with hand-weights.

Randy stops in his tracks and regards a house across the
street. The one he shared with Henry and Donna. A happy
family has dinner inside.

He stares longingly into the home.

Hey, beautiful.

                       DONNA (TEEN)

It just sucks not knowing, you
know? Do you think we will ever
see him again?

Randy grabs her hand.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
I promise we will.

Light emerges through the blinks of slowly opening eyes.

Teen Randy stands in a long, dark tunnel. Light from a
distant exit beams in.

Teen Randy runs toward the light. The tunnel behind him

He sees his mangled pick-up truck, crumpled and smoking. He
walks toward it.

Teen Randy stops cold when he sees a bloody Adult Randy
crawl toward Luanne's mangled body.

Adult Randy collapses, goes still. Teen Randy rushes to
Adult Randy. Falls to his knees at his side.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
Wake up! Come on! Get up!

Luanne's eyes pop open, intense and fiery. Teen Randy jerks
back. Luanne crawls and contorts. She cups her hands and
leans to his ear.

                       LUANNE
      (whispers)
Last chance.

INT. TEEN RANDY'S BATHROOM - LATER

Randy, fully dressed, brushes his teeth and stares at

in his pocket.

Jamie and Lucy, groggy from waking, shuffle in the kitchen.
Their eyes shoot up.

Randy, greasy apron on, cooks breakfast for the family.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
There are my two favorite ladies!

Randy attempts to hug Jamie.

                       JAMIE (KID)
Let go, what are you doing?

                       RANDY (TEEN)
      (lets go)
What, can't a guy give his
favorite sister a hug?

                       JAMIE (KID)
Since when did Sunshine Bear crawl
up your butt?

Jamie gives Randy a suspicious look. Randy gives her an
innocent smile. He then walks to Lucy and gives her a hug.

                       LUCY
I love you, Randy.

He scurries down a hallway of lockers, bumps into a couple
of STUDENTS as he goes.

Randy stops in his tracks, his jaw drops.

OTHER END OF THE HALL

Brian chit-chats with Donna. She smiles and walks away from
her brother.

Randy nervously shuffles over.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
Hey, Brian.

                       BRIAN
What do you want?

                       RANDY (TEEN)
I'm just really happy to see you.

Randy attempts to hug him, but Brian shrugs him off.

                       BRIAN
Why?

                       RANDY (TEEN)
Cause you never know when you're
going to lose someone.

                       BRIAN
What's that supposed to mean?

                       RANDY (TEEN)
I've been a shitty friend.

                       BRIAN
I'm glad you realize that.

Brian closes his locker and walks away. Randy closely
follows.

                       BRIAN
What's gotten into you?

Randy jumps ahead of Brian and grabs his shoulders.

95.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
Something is going to happen to
you today!

                       BRIAN
Let go of me!

Brian pushes Teen Randy off. Eyes turn towards the two.
TEACHER approaches.

                       TEACHER
Okay you two, break it up.

BELL RINGS

Brian marches away. Randy watches helplessly.

EXT. SCHOOL PARKING LOT - DAY

Randy conspicuously makes his way to the bike rack.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
This will slow him down.

Behind him, a few yards away, Officer Garcia approaches.

                       OFFICER GARCIA
Jenkins, what are you doing?

Randy turns, eyes wide.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
Nothing, what are you doing?

They stare steely eyed. A Mexican standoff.

Randy bolts. Officer Garcia pursues.

They cross a courtyard. Officer Garcia gains ground as
Randy's legs pump. Officer Garcia leaps and takes Randy to
the ground.

He puts plastic zip-tie cuffs on Randy's hands.

INT. OFFICER GARCIA'S OFFICE - DAY

Officer Garcia sits at his desk, phone in hand. Randy sits
across from him, cuffed.

96.

                       OFFICER GARCIA
Yes Miss Jenkins, he's in the
office now.
(pause)
He'll be here when you come to
pick him up.

Officer Garcia hangs up.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
I need to leave, Brian Rivers is
in--

                       OFFICER GARCIA
--Quiet, Jenkins! Your mom will be
here in an hour. I have to go make
my rounds.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
You don't understand!

Officer Garcia exits the room. Randy reaches in his pocket
and pulls out the pocket knife. He glances on the desk and
notices a set of keys.

EXT. SCHOOL PARKING LOT - DAY

Randy, crouches, scans the near empty lot. Only a few
students meander away. He approaches Officer Garcia's squad
car and sticks the keys in.

EXT. HILLY ROAD - DAY

Randy zooms the squad car through the curvy road.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
Which way would he have gone?

Randy slams on the breaks. His eyes grow wide. A sign on the
side of the road reads "Last Chance Trail".

He gets out of the car and runs through the lightly cleared
wooded area. He continues several feet.

He reaches a fork in the road. He goes a few feet down the
left path and scans around. Frantic, he runs back down and
examines the right path.

Something catches his eye. He squats down and picks up a
tiny wrapper. Bazooka Gum.

97.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
Brian's favorite!

Randy drops the wrapper and bolts down the path.

EXT. LAST CHANCE LAKE - EVENING

A remote wooded area. Sunlight dapples the flickering autumn
leaves.

Randy hurries down the path.

PICNIC CLEARING

Randy hurries down the path. Brian sits alone at a picnic
table several yards away.

Clay, arms crossed and apprehensive, and Justin, determined,
approaches. Brian turns to the two.

                       JUSTIN (TEEN)
You think you can just go around
fucking with people's lives?

                       BRIAN
What do you want?

Justin pulls out Uncle Ernie's revolver, twirls it around on
his finger.

Randy bolts and gets between Justin and Brian.

                       JUSTIN (TEEN)
What are you doing here, Jenkins?

                       BRIAN
      (to Teen Randy)
Did you follow me?

                       RANDY (TEEN)
Just cool it guys.

                       JUSTIN (TEEN)
Brian went and told his parents
where Donna got liquored up at. My
dad did this to me! Because of
him!

Justin lunges at Brian, but Randy stops him.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
I'm not letting this happen.

98.

Brian shoves Teen Randy.

                       BRIAN
I don't need you fighting my
battles.

Justin raises the gun at Randy.

                       JUSTIN (TEEN)
You don't have a choice.

Randy grabs at the gun. Justin struggles. The gun FIRES!

Brian grabs his ribs as a pool of red appears. He drops to
the ground.

Randy rushes to Brian's side and cradles his bloody,
unconscious head.

                       CLAY (TEEN)
Holy shit! What did you do? You
told me it wasn't loaded!

                       JUSTIN (TEEN)
      (shaken)
I fucking killed him. I didn't
mean to. This is your fault Randy!

                       RANDY (TEEN)
We need to get help!

                       JUSTIN (TEEN)
No one's getting help.

Randy stands and gets in Justin's face.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
He's going to die if we don't.

                       CLAY (TEEN)
Randy's right.

                       JUSTIN (TEEN)
He's probably going to anyway!
(looks at Teen Clay)
And what happens then? We're going
to prison for the rest of our
lives if we get help. We need to
hide the body.

99.

                       CLAY (TEEN)
We can still save him -- we'll say
he was playing with it and
accidentally shot himself.

                       JUSTIN (TEEN)
If by some miracle he lives, he'll
rat us out and make all of us
share a prison cell.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
I'm getting help.

Randy dashes away. Justin tackles him from behind. He
delivers two quick punches to Randy's face.

Randy rolls his hips and flips Justin off of him. He rushes
Justin and tackles him. The gun tumbles away into the brush.
They wrestle back and forth.

                       CLAY (TEEN)
Stop!

Justin ends up on top and wraps his hands around Randy's
neck. He squeezes. Randy's face turns a light shade of blue.

Randy reaches in his pocket and pulls out his pocket knife.
He stabs Justin in the ribs. His grip is released.

Randy crawls away, struggles to catch his breath. He lifts
himself up.

Justin pulls the knife from his side, a trickle of blood
runs out. Enraged. He charges Randy with the knife in hand.

                       CLAY (TEEN)
Lookout!

Randy turns. Justin drives the knife forward, penetrates
Randy's chest.

Randy drops to the ground, his face contorts in pain.

Clay rushes over and pulls Justin away.

                       CLAY (TEEN)
Jesus, Justin! What are you doing?

                       JUSTIN (TEEN)
Keeping us out of prison!

Justin stumbles a few feet and grabs a heavy rock.

100.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
Clay, don't let him do this!

                       JUSTIN (TEEN)
      (confident)
Don't you fucking move, Clay.

Justin stands over Randy. He lifts the rock above his head.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
      (pleads)
No.

                       JUSTIN (TEEN)
You should have stayed out of
this.

A LARGE BRANCH CRASHES across Teen Justin's head. He hits
the ground.

Clay holds half a broken branch, terrified at what he's just
done. He rushes to Randy's side.

                       CLAY (TEEN)
Hang on, okay.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
      (weakly points)
Lookout!

Clay turns. Justin rushes him. Clay cocks his arm back and
punches him square in the jaw. Lights out.

Clay rushes back to Randy's side, grips his hand.

                       CLAY (TEEN)
I'm going to get help, alright?

Clay dashes away.

Brian, hand grasping his bloody ribs, crawls over towards
Randy.

                       BRIAN
Hey, you alright.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
Just enjoying the lovely day out.

                       BRIAN
You saved my life.

101.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
Hey, you got any more of that
disgusting gum?

Brian reaches in his pocket and pulls out a piece of Bazooka
gum, hands it to Randy. He pops it in his mouth.

                       BRIAN
Thanks for coming.

The dying light casts a crimson glow over Brian and Randy.
Randy's eyes flicker closed.

A WHITE LIGHT ENVELOPS THE SCREEN

                       RANDY (V.O.)
Did Brian make it? What about
Henry and Donna?

                       DR. ROBERTS (V.O.)
There will be plenty of time for
that.

                       RANDY (V.O.)
I have so many questions.

                       DR. ROBERTS (V.O.)
First, I want you to think of a
time and place where you felt
completely at home, a place where
you're safe to be the version of
you that you always wanted to be.
And everyone you've lost is there.

EXT. FILMORE PARK - DAY

Teen Randy, baseball uniform on, glove in hand, blinks his
eyes open.

Brian stands across from him, same uniform on.

                       RANDY (V.O.)
Okay, now what?

                       DR. ROBERTS (V.O.)
Now go to that place.

                       BRIAN
You gonna throw that or what? I
don't have all day!

102.

Teen Randy looks himself over, recognition sets in. He
tosses the ball to Brian.

Brian tosses the baseball back. They exchange a knowing
smile.

Brian looks towards the parking lot. Teen Randy turns.

The blue van pulls in the lot and parks. Teen Randy's body
goes limp.

Both doors to each side of the van open. Lucy and Keith
exit.

                       RANDY (TEEN)
      (scared)
Dad?

Teen Randy's jaw drops. His eyes connect with Keith. A
gigantic smile. He drops his baseball gear and bolts to
them.

Keith wraps Teen Randy in his arms as Lucy looks on.

                       KEITH
I'm so proud of you, Randy.

FADE OUT.
