LIFE'S GAME

FADE IN:

INT. BANQUET DINNER - NIGHT

We are at a fancy restaurant with a mere 25 in attendance. A
50 year old black rim glasses man. Lavish and bright sits
and waits. This is Billy Harris. Billy takes his glasses off
and wipes them then places it back on his face. He's
composed and collected.

His wife, Jennifer (40s), gorgeously dressed comes from
behind and kisses Billy on the cheek. It catches him off
guard.

                       JENNIFER
Hello hon.

                       DR. HARRIS
      (Happily)
Hey Jen.

his stepdaughter Tracy (20s) in a business attire pecks him
on the other cheek

                       TRACY
Hi Bill.

                       DR. HARRIS
      (Confused)
Hello sweetie. Where's your
brother?

                       TRACY
He went to the Seven-eleven down
the street.

                       DR. HARRIS
Why

                       TRACY
Does anything he does make sense?

                       DR. HARRIS
made your point.

                       TRACY
So Bill how it went.

The family takes a seat.

2.

                       DR. HARRIS
Well it went well. I performed in
front of my students. The patient
has cancer and it was progressing
so we extract the ovum.

                       TRACY
You save her life.

                       DR. HARRIS
I wouldn't necessarily say I saved
her life. I kind of prolonged it.

Harris holds Jennifer's hand.

                       TRACY
That's neat. Very neat.

                       DR. HARRIS
Thanks hon.

Jennifer looks unnerved. Harris turns his attention to Her.

                       DR. HARRIS

                       JENNIFER

                       JENNIFER
Yeah she drove, but good on you
Billy. I'm proud of you.

                       DR. HARRIS
Thanks hon.

He kisses Jen on the forehead.

Tracy's brother (Miles Ferris) enters. He wears a Nirvana
shirt.

                       DR. HARRIS
You were suppose to dress for this
occasion.

He takes a seat besides Tracy.

                       DR. HARRIS
That is highly inappropriate.

                       DR. HARRIS

The officer places his hand on his shoulder.

                       DR. HARRIS
      (Voice raises)
Get your hands of me!

                       MILES
      (waves)
Adios.

Harris walk over to Miles and gets in his face.

                       DR. HARRIS
Listen here, I hope your proud of
yourself. I don't know who you are
anymore. I don't think I ever did.

                       MILES
And listen here. I don't think she
really love you the way you
thought she did.

Harris outraged, throws a fist but gets caught by the police
and tackled to the ground.

                       DR. HARRIS
You son of a bitch! You ungrateful
little shit.

                       MILES
Get him out my house.

The police escorts the doctor out.

INT. DR. HARRIS QUARTERS - DAY

There's a knock on the door. Dr. Harris reads his treatise.

                       DR. HARRIS
Come in.

                       ZOE
Hello, doctor?

Dr. Harris avoids eye contact.

                       DR. HARRIS
Yes?

                       ZOE
May I talk with you?

15.

                       DR. HARRIS
For what purpose?

                       ZOE
To discuss my situation.

                       DR. HARRIS
You cannot enact your purpose in
life while riveting your own
plans.

                       ZOE
Home been pretty rough.

                       DR. HARRIS
Which is of the past which cannot
be undone, only the foreseen is in
your power.

                       ZOE
I don't know what it is.

                       DR. HARRIS
Not to many do.

                       ZOE
My mom fell ill. I need to drop
out of the semester.

                       DR. HARRIS
Is that all?

                       ZOE
She's sick.

                       DR. HARRIS
We all fall ill from time to time.

                       ZOE
No, she has cancer.

                       DR. HARRIS
My condolences.

                       ZOE
How could you say that an not
second guess yourself?

Zoe has Dr. Harris his full attention. Harris places his
treatise down.

                       DR. HARRIS
Because its the truth. Look April.

16.

                       ZOE
Zoe, no one calls me April.

                       DR. HARRIS
Anything outside of class doesn't
correlate well within it. I'm
sorry your mom has cancer. But why
dwell on that. When your future is
foreseen and you will know what
your purpose in life will be. Heck
you can finish my course, and find
out it was surgery you can do a
different course and find out its
poetry or you can find out it was
meant helping at soup kitchens.

                       ZOE
You're a cruel man.

                       DR. HARRIS
April?

                       ZOE
Zoe!

                       DR. HARRIS
You can leave if you want but
understand if you do. There's no
chance of returning.

                       ZOE
My mom needs me. I really hope you
don't have a family. They would be
ashamed to have you.

                                         ##PRESENT##

EXT. SOMEWHERE OUT IN THE STREETS - DAY

The doctor looks indistinguishable. A full set of beard and
ragged clothes.

He walks down the street while the sun beats him.

CONTINUES

He sits by a dumpster and finds a cardboard cut out and
writes on it with his hospital pen. He holds the sign by an
intersected street.

17.

LATER THAT NIGHT

He walks down a less busy street. With the face of a loser.

INT. SOUP KITCHEN - NIGHT

The doctor waits in line to collect his tray and food. He
goes over to an empty table. Zoe, now a soldier for the
salvation army did a double take at the doctor and joins
him. She sits across from him. They are both
indistinguishable the last time they met.

                       ZOE
How you whine up here?

                       DR. HARRIS
Life haven't been good to me.

                       ZOE
I could say the same about myself.

                       DR. HARRIS
Yeah, but at least you have
something.

                       ZOE
True, this church is my family. I
grew up in the salvation army. My
mom was captain.

                       DR. HARRIS
Really?

                       ZOE
Yeah.

                       DR. HARRIS
What happen if you don't mind me
asking?

                       ZOE
She's with God now.

                       DR. HARRIS
God?

                       ZOE
Don't tell me you gonna say you
don't believe.

18.

                       DR. HARRIS
Never find an atheist in a
foxhole.

                       ZOE
I'm impressed.

                       DR. HARRIS
Well, that was rhetorical. I'm not
really sure.

                       ZOE
Why?

                       DR. HARRIS
If there was a God, I wouldn't
believe that he would take
everything from me. I don't think
a loving all powerful being would
make his children suffer by the
grace this.

                       ZOE
God doesn't punish sir. Look God
doesn't test us because he doesn't
know how strong we are. He tests
us because we don't know how
strong we are and last thing you
know we'll only realize it when it
happens. Understand?

                       DR. HARRIS
Everything been taken from me,
everything. My wife, my children,
my house.

                       ZOE
Your job?

                       DR. HARRIS
What I did doesn't matter anymore.

                       ZOE
What do you do.

                       DR. HARRIS
Oncologist.

                       ZOE
So why are you here?

                       DR. HARRIS
Beg your pardon?

19.

                       ZOE
How are you gonna save lives if
you living like this?

                       DR. HARRIS
This wasn't the life I chose. I
didn't chose to live like this. My
wife died from cancer. I lost my
house, I lost...

                       ZOE
How you gonna mourn and grief
something you can't change?

                       DR. HARRIS
I'm sorry?

                       ZOE
You have to put this all behind
you. You lost someone who was
grateful to you. you lost your
home. But you haven't lost

Harris scoffs.

                       ZOE
Alright sir, but let me tell you
one thing a wiseman once said.
"Everyone in this room is on this
Earth for a reason. No matter of
the outcome. Everyone is special.
What ever you were here to do you
can't do it if your mourning the
past. The past can't be changed
only the future is foreseen. Its
in your power.

The doctor looks at the soldier, perplexed.

                       ZOE
I hope you find your way,
goodnight.

The soldier walks away from the doctor, leaving him with his
thoughts.

INT. MANSION - DAY

The doctor peeps through an old photo album. His family that
once was, during the happier days. The doctor smiles, with
his hand feeling it.

20.

                       MILES (os)
I don't even recognize you
anymore.

                       DR. HARRIS
That's what happens when one
becomes a ghost for so long.

                       MILES
      (smiles)
I don't think I invited you in.

                       DR. HARRIS
Dont worry I let myself in.

                       MILES
Well make yourself at home I
guess.

Dr. Harris grimace at the view of the house

                       DR. HARRIS
I thought I raised you better than
this.

Harris turns to face Miles. Miles in shade.

                       MILES
Things change.

                       DR. HARRIS
Yeah things have changed.

Harris walks closer and closer till we see Miles in terrible
condition. Miles has sandbags for eyes.

                       DR. HARRIS
im sorry.

Miles cries.

                       DR. HARRIS
I failed you as a father.

                       MILES
All this time ive felt proud.. In
this house alone. At the end of
the day all ive felt was despair.
Mom died in vain. Her death is a
joke. And im the ones whos
dealing. Mom would of been ashamed
of me. I let her down.

21.

                       DR. HARRIS
No you haven't

Harris places his hand on Miles shoulder.

                       MILES
Pawned most stuff for the high.
How much im willing to sell this
family. I feel sick, I feel awful.
I failed her. I did.

                       DR. HARRIS
Listen to me your mothers death
hitus all hard. Your mother
trusted you. More than your sister
and i. You are my son, you will
always be by son. I'm so sorry.
Forget about the past son. forget
about it. You can't change that.
But what you can change is the
future.

Harris has his hands over his face, looks into his eyes.

                       DR. HARRIS
You hear me?

                       MILES
Dad, i'm so sorry.

Miles hugs Harris.

                       DR. HARRIS
Me too son, me too.

INT. MANSION - LATER

Harris walks to a mirror. Stares at himself. Deep inside his
own soul. Harris turns on a razor and shaves his beard.

INT. DINNING ROOM - LATER

A distraught Miles seated. Face Pale white.

Harris, now cleaned and indistinguishable enters.

Harris puts down a bowl in front of Miles and poured him
cereal. Miles looks up at Harris before he eats it.

22.

                       DR. HARRIS
Shes right you know, your mother.
I haven't been around. I became a
slave to my craft that I forgot
how to be a husband, a parent.
When she put the will in your
name, I was hurt. But I know why.
Never make a living when you're
not able to live.

                       MILES
I'm sorry what I said about mom.
She did love you.

                       DR. HARRIS
Its the past son.

                       MILES
But the scars.

                       DR. HARRIS
They'll heal.

EXT. SALVATION ARMY CITADEL - MORNING

Harris approaches the representative in a office. She looks
up from her phone.

                       DR. HARRIS
      (Confident)
Morning, may i get in contact with
Zoe.

                       REP
Sorry sir she's no longer with the
corp.

                       DR. HARRIS

23.

                       REP
You can try this address.

INT. OPERATING ROOM - MORNING

Dr. Manning and his colleagues are operating. They operate
in front of an audience. Manning stops what he's doing and
baffled at the sight of Dr. Harris.

EXT. SUBURBAN HOME - DAY

Zoe takes out a letter from the mailbox. Its a card to a
banquet ceremonial dinner.

INT. HOME - DAY

Zoe sits down and lights a cigarette. She opens the letter.
Her eyes follows word to word till she stops puffing.

INT. CEREMONIAL DINNER - DAY

Zoe seated and many enter in attendance.

                       DR. HARRIS
I want to thank everyone for
coming out here tonight. It really
means a lot to me. Years ago I
spoke about the specialty in each
and everyone of us. Our goals as
men and women helping one another,
but I've been contradicting myself
so it seems. I didn't really
wanted to help anyone, only
myself. You know we may have
answered that meaning of life.
Helping one another as if its you
living that life. A woman I meant
when I was homeless told me how
are you gonna save lives if i'm
unable to do my job.

Zoe eyes glued to the stage.

                       DR. HARRIS
A woman once said The past can't
be changed only the future is
foreseen. Its in your power.
Ladies and gentlemen I want to
award this humanitarian award to
one of my colleague. Please
            (MORE)

                       DR. HARRIS (cont'd)
welcome Zoe Walker.

Everyone applauds as well as Zoe, however one of her
colleagues turns to her.

                       COLLEAGUE
That's you Zoe.

                       ZOE
Me?!

                       COLLEAGUE
Yes! Now go up there!

Zoe is baffled. Makes way through the audience. Couldn't
believe it.

Zoe now face to face with Dr. Harris. She stares at him
bewildered.

                       ZOE
Professor Harris?

                       DR. HARRIS
Yeah its me.

                       ZOE
I didn't know.

                       DR. HARRIS
I want to personally thank you. If
it wasn't for you I don't know
where I would be. I certainly
wouldn't be on stage with you, now
would I. Tuition payed for, I want
you to finish. You showed me the
way and now its my honor to show
you as well.

                       ZOE
      (Mouthed)
Thank You.

Zoe takes the humanitarian award faces the podium. We see
familiar faces in the audience, such as Dr. Manning and the
family.
